- 1:28Speaker 6: I'm worried about.
- 1:29Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 1:30Speaker 5: What's with me? You know what's with you? Now? You

- 1:45Speaker 4: I haven't even washed out one sock rick.
- 1:48Speaker 6: It wasn't fair when you stole that picture, and I've
- 1:50Speaker 6: been embarrassed about it ever since then. I want it back.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Oh but honey, it don't be that way. It looks lovely,
- 1:56Speaker 5: can you see it?
- 1:57Speaker 4: Sure got it right on my desk. I won't have it.
- 2:01Speaker 4: I'll look.
- 2:01Speaker 5: If anybody asks about it, i'll say it's me. You
- 2:04Speaker 5: never were a baby.
- 2:05Speaker 6: You started with a beard in a low whistle.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Honey, Honey, I had a baby picture just like it once,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and believe me, from the way you're facing in the picture,
- 2:14Speaker 3: you couldn't tell the difference between us.
- 2:16Speaker 6: I'm lying on a rug. You probably had yours taken
- 2:19Speaker 6: on spike. Now you bring that right over. I'll tell
- 2:21Speaker 6: everybody your middle name, Helen. I'll see you in twenty minutes,
- 2:25Speaker 6: or i'll take a full page Chad in the time.
- 2:27Speaker 5: You wouldn't twenty minutes with the picture, Helen.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Oh dandy, mister h Yes, but I'm afraid you'll have
- 2:39Speaker 3: to come back. I've got to take care of something
- 2:41Speaker 3: that might mean my whole future is a private detective.
- 2:44Speaker 7: I'm sorry, I won't keep you well. Could you tell
- 2:48Speaker 7: me the name of another good detective?
- 2:50Speaker 5: Uh, there aren't any goodbye?
- 2:53Speaker 7: Oh please, I don't know where to go.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Oh now we'll wait a minute time. I'm sorry. Something's
- 2:58Speaker 3: really wrong, isn't it.
- 3:00Speaker 7: That's all right, mister Diamond. You go on, I'll find someone.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Oh look, I really didn't know you were in a
- 3:05Speaker 3: tough spot. I've got enough time to listen. Oh, thank
- 3:08Speaker 3: you who recommended me?
- 3:10Speaker 7: My son? Oh, I've heard about you for several years.
- 3:14Speaker 7: My name is Kirby, missus Lenora Kirby.
- 3:17Speaker 5: How do you do, missus Kirby, Just how did your
- 3:19Speaker 5: son know me?
- 3:20Speaker 7: Well? He didn't know you well, only about reputation. He
- 3:24Speaker 7: was a private detective also Kirby.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Bill Kirby, Yes, wow, tell me what's worrying you, Missus Kirby.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Well, I don't know quite where to start. William Bill,
- 3:39Speaker 7: he's been acting strangely for the last month or so.
- 3:42Speaker 5: What exactly do you mean by strangely?
- 3:44Speaker 7: He's changed. He's begun to act nervous and irritable. When
- 3:48Speaker 7: his sister I would try to find out what was wrong,
- 3:50Speaker 7: you'd get angry. He got steadily worse. And then one
- 3:54Speaker 7: morning Gloria, Gloria, my daughter, Bill's sister, go ahead, well,
- 3:59Speaker 7: she went into a room. He was asleep, so she
- 4:02Speaker 7: started to hang up his trousers. When she turned them
- 4:05Speaker 7: upside down, a lot of money dropped on the floor.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Oh, what do you mean a lot of money?
- 4:11Speaker 7: Gloria said. There must have been several thousand dollars, mostly
- 4:15Speaker 7: one hundred dollar bills.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Did he have another source of income? I mean, besides
- 4:20Speaker 5: the private detective bills?
- 4:21Speaker 7: No, no, lose nothing I know of. We're not wealthy,
- 4:26Speaker 7: mister diamond. Bill supports us with what he makes, and
- 4:30Speaker 7: Gloria works as a secretary in a law firm. And
- 4:33Speaker 7: I tried to keep my house in order. Of course,
- 4:36Speaker 7: I haven't been terribly well since the children's father died
- 4:39Speaker 7: ten years ago.
- 4:40Speaker 5: I see. Then what happened?
- 4:42Speaker 7: Well, Gloria started to put the money back in Bill's trousers,
- 4:46Speaker 7: and he woke up. They had a terrible argument. Bill
- 4:50Speaker 7: accused her of snooping, and she accused him of doing
- 4:53Speaker 7: something illegal. The next day, Bill packed his clothes and
- 4:58Speaker 7: left the house. He took his small apartment on one
- 5:01Speaker 7: hundred and tenth Street.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Uh huh now, uh, oh, what is it you want
- 5:05Speaker 5: me to do?
- 5:05Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:06Speaker 7: Well, there's more to the story. Bill continued to send
- 5:10Speaker 7: me money to keep the house going, much more than
- 5:13Speaker 7: he had ever contributed before. I went over to his
- 5:17Speaker 7: apartment several times and asked him about the money, and
- 5:20Speaker 7: every time there'd be an argument.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Did he give you any kind of an excuse?
- 5:24Speaker 7: No, he just said he'd run into a good thing
- 5:27Speaker 7: and that as long as it was helping out with
- 5:29Speaker 7: the house, I shouldn't ask any questions.
- 5:32Speaker 5: All right? Then what happened?
- 5:34Speaker 7: Three days ago? Bill came over to the house. I
- 5:38Speaker 7: could tell he was terribly worried about something. He gave
- 5:41Speaker 7: me a package, told me to hide it until he
- 5:44Speaker 7: came for it, not to open it. Then he disappeared.
- 5:49Speaker 7: He didn't go to his office or his apartment, and
- 5:53Speaker 7: I haven't heard from him since.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Did you call the police?
- 5:55Speaker 7: Well, I didn't want to. He's mixed up in something.
- 6:00Speaker 8: Duck.
- 6:01Speaker 7: I'm sure something's happened to my boy. I just know
- 6:05Speaker 7: it is.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Look, missus Kirby.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I admit it sounds a little fishy, but you never
- 6:10Speaker 3: can tell.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Maybe it's a day A girl could be a lot
- 6:14Speaker 5: of things where do you live.
- 6:18Speaker 7: Four Amsterdam Avenue? Oh? Thank you.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Now you go on home, take it easy. I'll let
- 6:23Speaker 5: you know if anything turns.
- 6:24Speaker 7: Out all right, I'm sorry. I don't usually cry like this. Oh,
- 6:29Speaker 7: mister Diamond, about your feet.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Missus Kirby, Yes, do you cook?
- 6:33Speaker 7: Yes, I'm considered quite a good cook.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Well if I do anything for your son, I'm a
- 6:37Speaker 3: sucker for corn, beef and cabbage.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I go on home and I'll keep.
- 6:41Speaker 4: In touch with you.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Goodbye, mister Diamond.
- 6:44Speaker 4: God bless you.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I'm afraid he knows me too well. Goodbye, missus Kirby.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Funny how you're gonna run into a situation like that
- 6:56Speaker 3: any other time? It's got to be one hundred to
- 6:57Speaker 3: day and expenses.
- 6:59Speaker 5: But that's because cause trouble doesn't usually bother me.
- 7:02Speaker 3: There's too much of it around and everybody's a stockholer.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Then a little old lady walks in with a bucket
- 7:07Speaker 3: full of heartache, and you realize one.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Hundred a day and expenses is only the difference you.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Carry around to make up for that big cold world outside.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I put my merit badge away, grabbed Helen's picture off
- 7:19Speaker 3: the desk, and headed for nine to seventy five Pike Avenue.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Well you're late.
- 7:27Speaker 6: I was just going to call the papers, but I
- 7:29Speaker 6: wasn't quite sure how you spell your middle name.
- 7:32Speaker 7: It's c h oh.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Here's the picture.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 7:37Speaker 5: I didn't know you had a mole on you.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Rick.
- 7:40Speaker 7: Ain't you coming in?
- 7:41Speaker 3: No? No, I'm not a mad what even? Let me
- 7:44Speaker 3: keep you a little baby picture? Now about that moment?
- 7:47Speaker 5: Now you stop that?
- 7:49Speaker 7: Why can't you come in?
- 7:50Speaker 5: Well? I got a client.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Right after I talk to you, I got to go
- 7:52Speaker 3: down to the fifth pre Sect.
- 7:53Speaker 5: And do some checking. I see you tonight if you
- 7:56Speaker 5: will tell me about the mode.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Now, Rick, see you at eight.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Buy mole a sam a baby.
- 8:08Speaker 5: I left Helen and started down Park Avenue.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Every private detective must get a license before he can operate,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and the police department has to issue it.
- 8:17Speaker 4: So I headed for the fifth Precinct police station.
- 8:20Speaker 3: When I walked in the squadroom, I spotted Sergeant Ortis
- 8:22Speaker 3: looking like he was headed for the elephant's graveyard.
- 8:28Speaker 4: What's the matter with the otis? You're greener than a
- 8:30Speaker 4: new lawn.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Oh, hello, shams, and it'll feel so good. No, as
- 8:35Speaker 5: a matter of fact, you don't little pudgy around the shoulders.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Ah, come on, layoff, tell you I feel sickle's see
- 8:41Speaker 3: your tongue?
- 8:43Speaker 5: Oh uh h, well how does it look?
- 8:47Speaker 3: I don't know, but be careful who you show it to.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Somebody's love to think it's poisons and killed him with
- 8:53Speaker 3: a stick.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Hello.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Well, oh no, okay, I'm too tired to be scared off.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Who's dead and where?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Not?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Today? Wald?
- 9:02Speaker 5: And what are you so tired about?
- 9:04Speaker 3: We had a killing this morning. I've questioned every suspect
- 9:06Speaker 3: in the whole state.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Nothing. Who got dead? Maybe you knew him? Shamus? Uh? Kirby,
- 9:12Speaker 5: what how the devil? Did you know that? Just a guess?
- 9:15Speaker 5: Guess my thirty eight?
- 9:17Speaker 3: Do you know something? I don't know anything, Walt. Kirby's
- 9:19Speaker 3: mother was just at my office. Oh yeah, oh, you
- 9:23Speaker 3: don't have to get sore. I'm not sore, just wondering.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Who's going to tell missus Kirby. ODIs went over there
- 9:29Speaker 3: a little while ago. He saw the sister. The mother
- 9:31Speaker 3: wasn't home yet. Oh that's why he looks so bad. Yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 3: I guess so, wouldn't you. Okay, where's the body downstairs?
- 9:38Speaker 3: I want to take a look, not especially I told
- 9:40Speaker 3: his mother. I'd do something for him, and right now
- 9:43Speaker 3: I don't seem to be able.
- 9:44Speaker 5: To think of a thing.
- 9:45Speaker 9: Get the killer help me. Okay, let's go down and
- 9:49Speaker 9: take a look. Right over here, Ben in the river.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yeah, put four slugs in him first though, what kind
- 10:13Speaker 3: of a gun?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Twelve gage shotgun? Used a deer though?
- 10:16Speaker 3: Anything on him? Just the usual identification. Okay, let's put
- 10:20Speaker 3: him back.
- 10:21Speaker 5: I don't know why he got knocked off. No motive,
- 10:23Speaker 5: no nothing.
- 10:24Speaker 3: The mother has quite a story. Yeah, she told me
- 10:26Speaker 3: your side. Oh no, yeah, and here comes malicious.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Hey, we just got a call.

- 10:40Speaker 3: First the sun gets it for no apparent reasons, and
- 10:42Speaker 3: the rest of the family get beat up.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I think I can tell you why the mother and
- 10:44Speaker 4: sister got beat up. Why call me?
- 10:46Speaker 5: The package Kirby left with his mother? What package? I'll
- 10:49Speaker 5: tell you about it all the way over in the car.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Okay, Oh that's okay, Come on, step on little Yeah, yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 3: this time you can use the sign.

- 11:18Speaker 5: you won't allow them to take you to the hospital.
- 11:20Speaker 7: No, I'm not leaving my house to take more than
- 11:23Speaker 7: two cheap hoodlums to drive me out of my house.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Well, doctor says, you'll be all right, but I think
- 11:28Speaker 3: the hospital might be safer for a few days.
- 11:30Speaker 5: This is Lieutenant Levinson. Missus Kirby, how did you do that?
- 11:33Speaker 5: I do? I know you don't feel much like talking.
- 11:36Speaker 7: No, that's quite all right. I'll be glad to help
- 11:38Speaker 7: in any way that I can.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Were they after the package your son left with you?
- 11:42Speaker 7: Yes, but I didn't give it to them. I almost
- 11:46Speaker 7: did when they started to hit Glorias, but I knew
- 11:49Speaker 7: they had something to do with Bill's.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Death, And you do the package was important too?
- 11:54Speaker 7: Yes?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Where is the package, missus Kirky?

- 12:16Speaker 4: two men who came here, do you think you could
- 12:17Speaker 4: identify them?
- 12:18Speaker 5: Oh?
- 12:19Speaker 7: Yes, it would be hard to forget them.
- 12:21Speaker 3: You're sure you don't have any idea what kind of
- 12:23Speaker 3: trouble your son was in? No, here's the bread lit Ah,
- 12:32Speaker 3: I don't be Hey, it's a shoe.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Is this one of your son's shoes, missus.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Kirby, No, no, he wears much smaller size. No, that
- 12:41Speaker 7: isn't his shoe.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I don't get this. Nothing in it.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Just a shoe, a big one.
- 12:45Speaker 5: What size is it? Hey, what's the matter?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Well, the shoe size on the inside it says six B,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and then I have numbers after it. If that's a
- 12:54Speaker 3: six B. Orys wears matchboxes? Oh yeah, oh thises Okay.
- 13:00Speaker 7: I don't understand. Why would Bill leave his shoe and
- 13:03Speaker 7: act like it.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Were so important, because it probably was very important.
- 13:07Speaker 3: You think these numbers could be Let's see on if
- 13:11Speaker 3: these numbers do mean anything? And sure isn't going to
- 13:13Speaker 3: be easy finding out? Here's something walk Yeah, mm, shoes
- 13:18Speaker 3: got new heels on it. It's been half sold? Otis yeah?
- 13:21Speaker 3: To take the shoe down at the station, give it
- 13:23Speaker 3: to the lab, see what they can find out, and
- 13:24Speaker 3: then get the boys out and check every shoe repair
- 13:26Speaker 3: shop in the city. I want to know whether the
- 13:28Speaker 3: shoe was half sold. Okay, missus Kirby, you're sure you
- 13:31Speaker 3: can't think of a thing that might give.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Us a tip about your son.
- 13:34Speaker 7: No nothing, mister d Rick.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I'm going down to the station, find out about that shoe,
- 13:38Speaker 3: and I'll send a rogues gallery over so missus Kirby
- 13:40Speaker 3: can try and pick out the two guys who worked
- 13:42Speaker 3: the rover.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Oh uh, check the mate, fine or anything?
- 13:44Speaker 4: Will the right walk?
- 13:46Speaker 7: Mister Dunmond, There's no reason for you to go on
- 13:49Speaker 7: with this case. My son's dead. You can't help him now.
- 13:56Speaker 7: I'm sure your business is very important.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Missus Kirby. I said I do something for your son.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Well I was a little late. Now I'm going to
- 14:04Speaker 3: do something for me. There's a killer loose and two
- 14:07Speaker 3: slobs will beat up women. I'm a little unhappy, Missus Kirby.
- 14:10Speaker 3: So I've got to square this beef the only way
- 14:12Speaker 3: I know how. First, i'd like to talk.
- 14:15Speaker 5: To your daughter.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Oh no, look, lawyer, it's tough, and I don't like
- 14:33Speaker 3: to stick my big nose in when it is.
- 14:36Speaker 5: But you want something.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Done about it, don't you them think real?
- 14:40Speaker 4: Hide? Can you tell me anything about your brother that
- 14:42Speaker 4: might be connected with his death?
- 14:44Speaker 8: No, no, mister Dunmand, I've got gotten.
- 14:50Speaker 7: I just can't understand.
- 14:52Speaker 3: You may have been looking for the wrong thing, a
- 14:53Speaker 3: reason or a motor. That's not what I want.
- 14:56Speaker 4: What do you want? Something you might not even realize,
- 14:58Speaker 4: something that might seem important.
- 15:00Speaker 5: What is very important?
- 15:02Speaker 4: I try to think when you first began to suspect
- 15:05Speaker 4: that your brother was in trouble? Did he mention any names,
- 15:08Speaker 4: talk about any places?
- 15:09Speaker 7: No, not that I can remember.
- 15:12Speaker 5: What did he do when he wasn't at his office? Oh?
- 15:13Speaker 7: Please, please, I don't know.
- 15:15Speaker 4: I just don't know.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, I'm sorry.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Oh, I'm sorry. Oh, and I appreciate what you're doing,
- 15:23Speaker 8: mister Diamond. No, it's hard for me. I'll try.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Okay, No places, no names. Did he have a girl?
- 15:32Speaker 8: No, he didn't have a girl. He led a fairly
- 15:36Speaker 8: simple life, had a regular routine, routine. I used to
- 15:41Speaker 8: worry about it sometimes that he didn't have enough fun
- 15:45Speaker 8: to know anybody.
- 15:46Speaker 5: What kind of a routine was this?
- 15:49Speaker 8: Usual thing around the house in the morning, go to work.
- 15:53Speaker 8: On his way home, he always stopped at the bar
- 15:55Speaker 8: on Columbus Avenue for a beer and home dinner, eating
- 16:00Speaker 8: too ten thirty or eleven, good bed, nothing else.
- 16:04Speaker 5: No that every.
- 16:05Speaker 8: Day up until a time when he started acting funny.
- 16:10Speaker 7: I found out that money.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I see you. Well, thanks, I'll let you know if
- 16:15Speaker 5: anything turns up Gloria.
- 16:16Speaker 7: Thank you, mister Diamond.
- 16:19Speaker 4: I hope you. Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I left the Kirby house and walked out on the street.
- 16:29Speaker 3: It was getting there six o'clock and a light breeze
- 16:31Speaker 3: was blowing the night in it was turning coal. So
- 16:34Speaker 3: I flipped my collar up and started for Columbus Avenue
- 16:37Speaker 3: and the bar that Bill Kirby used to stop in
- 16:39Speaker 3: for a bear.
- 16:40Speaker 5: I turned down eighty eighth.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Street, picked up speed to shake the chill out of
- 16:44Speaker 3: my ankles.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Hey you, yeah, you Diamond? So what so where's that shoe? Oh?
- 16:54Speaker 3: You're going to find it harder working me over than
- 16:56Speaker 3: a couple of women.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Working you over. Maybe yeah, killing you? But he dies, easy,
- 17:00Speaker 4: give me the shoe. Where's your friend moving this alley?
