Speaker 1: By the way, that live program happens from 8 to 11am Saturday mornings, so I just wanted to throw that in there in case you're listening on a podcast later on that you're going to go wait a minute, it's not Saturday morning.

  Speaker 1: No, it's not.
• 0:57
Speaker 2: Gene Shine, snow Sleet Locusts will be there.
• 1:00
Speaker 2: Well, don't put us in there with the post office, because I think that the post office well, the post office is going through some upheaval challenges.
• 1:08
Speaker 1: People aren't getting the mail delivered and somebody stealing it.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: I thought you found your picture again In the post office.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Do they still have that I?
• 1:18
  Speaker 2: don't know.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: I haven't been in a post office in a long time.
• 1:19
  Speaker 3: I haven't been there yet.
• 1:20
Speaker 2: Well, I take that back, you go and you drop it in the slot because you want to deliver it right.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: You don't go in the yes, you don't go with the posted, the wanted.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: We got to fill out paperwork where Barney five always manages to put that up on.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: You know that was in the sheriff's office that wasn't the sheriff's office here's most wanted.
• 1:36
Speaker 1: Well, we're not wanting for anything except information from Sarah of Adrien.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: She's president of the Texas Muscle Car Club.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: Challenge, sarah, good morning.
• 1:48
  Speaker 4: Good morning guys.
• 1:49
  Speaker 4: How are y'all?
• 1:50
Speaker 1: Well, we're doing well.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Thank you for asking, and it's good to have you with us.
• 1:54
Speaker 1: So tell us about what you do.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: I know that you're the president of the Texas Muscle Car Club challenge, but what is it?
• 2:04
Speaker 4: So we are a small bracket racing series.
• 2:07
Speaker 4: Drag racing, drag racing.
• 2:10
Speaker 4: Okay, we stick to mainly Texas, oklahoma.
• 2:15
Speaker 4: Every now and then they try to run about 10 races a year.
• 2:19
Speaker 4: It kind of started off as a series for people who wanted to do a little bit of extra racing outside of, you know, the track storm or bracket programs.
• 2:31
Speaker 1: Because the back at let me just interrupt and say to those that don't know, the bracketed sportsman class of cars is huge.
• 2:41
  Speaker 1: There's a lot.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: I mean you know you could have one car in the class, okay, well, what do you do with that?
• 2:48
Speaker 1: That's how many classes there are.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: I mean, the book is thick.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, so you've gotten together.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: Okay, so what kind of cars?
• 2:56
Speaker 1: If you don't mind me interrupting and asking question.
• 2:59
  Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely so.
• 3:00
  Speaker 4: Mainly muscle cars.
• 3:01
Speaker 4: We actually have some BMWs over now and then, and you know a Chevy Volt of all things I know, but you know if it'll run consistent, come out and race on the track, it's a lot of fun.
• 3:15
Speaker 1: And how do you classify them?
• 3:16
Speaker 1: Because you don't put a Prius up against a BMW.
• 3:19
  Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely not.
• 3:20
Speaker 4: So everything is kind of broken down by time.
• 3:23
Speaker 4: So we don't want to have, you know, that slow Prius running you know a fuel all their car, because that would be very dangerous Right.
• 3:30
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 3:31
Speaker 4: We haven't broken down into classes and we've actually got eight classes that we run Grocery Gitter all the way up to full blown electronics, you name it All the bells and whistles.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: And what's the top?
• 3:43
Speaker 1: What's the top, the lowest speed?
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Are you a quarter mile or eighth mile?
• 3:48
Speaker 4: We do run some quarter mile, but we only run quarter mile up to 12 seconds.
• 3:54
  Speaker 1: Okay, wow.
• 3:56
Speaker 4: The faster cars stick eight mile only.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, so that 12 second quarter mile car would be, you know something, probably from 1968, 69, and it would be a bit been the hot rod of the time.
• 4:10
  Speaker 3: Z28 or a Hock one.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: Mustang big block, something like that.
• 4:13
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 4:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, and then you got the newer guys coming in too, right.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: And I'll get everybody a picture here of you know, the times back then are not muscle car times of today, and so there's a big, there's a drastic difference between the two.
• 4:29
Speaker 1: So you really cater to cars that's just say from 1964 to 1970.
• 4:38
  Speaker 4: Those were made.
• 4:39
Speaker 4: A lot of our older members, yeah, thank you very much for pointing that out.
• 4:43
Speaker 1: I know that you did that on purpose, but most people do.
• 4:46
  Speaker 1: It's okay.
• 4:47
Speaker 4: Honestly, if I could afford to have one, I would have one as well, but I can't.
• 4:50
Speaker 1: So you're too young.
• 4:52
Speaker 1: What kind of car do you drive?
• 4:53
Speaker 4: I drive an O seven Mustang.
• 4:56
  Speaker 1: O seven Mustang.
• 4:57
Speaker 1: Not shabby at all, Is it a bullet?
• 5:00
Speaker 4: I am Ford blues through and through.
• 5:02
Speaker 1: Okay, well, there's nothing wrong with that.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: I can appreciate that.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: Is it a bullet?
• 5:06
  Speaker 1: What is it?
• 5:07
Speaker 1: Is there anything special about it?
• 5:09
  Speaker 1: It's a GT, it was a.
• 5:11
Speaker 4: GT that started off as a five speed and has slowly morphed into a stroked and blown and you know automatic.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: So I got you, and so you're running an automatic in it now it was a turbo 400.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, all right.
• 5:27
Speaker 4: I got tired of breaking stuff.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, I can only imagine, because those manual transmissions, as I know, can be rough on it.
• 5:36
Speaker 3: She's got it blown.
• 5:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, a little more rough on that.
• 5:40
Speaker 2: You're going to calm down?
• 5:41
  Speaker 1: there?
• 5:41
Speaker 1: What kind of times do you run?
• 5:43
Speaker 1: Are you running eighth mile with that car?
• 5:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, I run eighth mile, about six eighties.
• 5:48
Speaker 1: Six eighties in the eighth mile, okay.
• 5:50
Speaker 1: So you can extrapolate the eighth mile and do the quarter mile.
• 5:54
Speaker 3: You get an idea.
• 5:56
  Speaker 4: Eleven, ten's ish.
• 5:58
Speaker 4: I run out of gear pretty quickly, so well, yeah, built it for eighth mile.
• 6:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean yeah, that would be easy to do so in the eighth mile.
• 6:06
Speaker 1: What gear do you cross the eighth mile marker at?
• 6:10
Speaker 4: I'm in third gear.
• 6:11
Speaker 4: Probably was a, maybe a thousand RPM left before I hit rev limiter.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: I got you All right, so you've got a pretty steep rear end in that.
• 6:21
  Speaker 4: It's only a three.
• 6:21
Speaker 4: Seventy three of all things.
• 6:23
  Speaker 4: Surprisingly, but yeah.
• 6:24
Speaker 1: Well, I guess it's the blower that gives it off with the juice.
• 6:27
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it does.
• 6:28
Speaker 1: You know what kind of horsepower you're running.
• 6:30
  Speaker 4: I would.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: It's been a while I've changed the pull layout since I've done it, but I'm guessing probably five, seventies, close to six.
• 6:39
Speaker 2: And you drive that every day.
• 6:41
Speaker 4: Oh no, that is relegated to.
• 6:44
Speaker 4: It is a trailer queen and track queen.
• 6:46
Speaker 4: It does not get on the street anymore.
• 6:48
Speaker 3: I got you Gone too far, it's getting too much to ensure it.
• 6:51
Speaker 1: I got you All right, so tell me about an event that you guys would put on and how many people show up to run, and I guess you've got probably a core group that kind of goes around the state.
• 7:06
Speaker 4: So we have about 1213 clubs that are pretty consistently running all the time.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: You know the main three the Ford, gm and Mopar Ford has.
• 7:19
Speaker 4: Actually, we've confined forces with another club this year, so it's going to be even more interesting.
• 7:23
Speaker 4: We're going to combine and try to go after the points championship for the club overall.
• 7:28
Speaker 4: We'll tell you a little bit more about that later, but usually we run probably about 120 to 130 cars.
• 7:35
  Speaker 4: Wow.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: That's significant, so that takes you a few hours to get through 120 cars.
• 7:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, usually so we do two time trials and then we start eliminations, usually right after lunch.
• 7:47
Speaker 1: And then, when you do, start eliminations on Saturday.
• 7:51
Speaker 1: No, so we usually run Sundays only oh really so you squeeze all of this in in one day, one day, oh my.
• 7:58
  Speaker 1: God.
• 7:58
Speaker 1: Well, I don't know who's doing the paperwork on that, but the little little little, little, little, little little.
• 8:05
Speaker 4: Man, our tracks are awesome.
• 8:06
Speaker 4: They do a great job of getting us in the door and getting us out.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: We're usually done by five o'clock.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: So what tracks are you going to and what's that picture behind you?
• 8:14
Speaker 4: That picture behind me is Old Texas Raceway in Kennedale.
• 8:17
Speaker 4: That was my first track I ever ran on, the track that I love and the one that owns my perfect reaction times.
• 8:22
Speaker 4: Unfortunately, that's been you know down for what at least 10 years now.
• 8:27
Speaker 1: Well, the bulldozer is a subdivision.
• 8:30
Speaker 4: The track strip is still there.
• 8:31
Speaker 4: They, the city, kind of went and told him hey, you're not operating anymore, we want to buy your land for a housing subdivision.
• 8:38
Speaker 4: And it never happened.
• 8:39
Speaker 4: That's just kind of sitting there vacant Wow.
• 8:42
  Speaker 1: What a shame.
• 8:45
Speaker 4: But yeah, I was like you know that's a perfect background.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: It's my favorite track Absolutely.
• 8:48
Speaker 4: That is very cool.
• 8:50
  Speaker 1: Yeah, we.
• 8:51
Speaker 1: It looks like you're sitting in an easy chair there right on the track at the starting line.
• 8:55
Speaker 4: I love that place.
• 8:56
Speaker 1: I miss that track so much, yeah, all right.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: So we're going to go through all the tracks now.
• 9:00
Speaker 1: So there's that one that doesn't exist anymore.
• 9:03
Speaker 1: Do you have a home track?
• 9:06
Speaker 4: We are home track is pretty much going to be our locals and that's going to be extreme Wastray Park in Ferris and Texas Motorplex they're an NS.
• 9:15
Speaker 1: Okay, so up north, yeah north part of Texas, yeah.
• 9:18
  Speaker 4: I forget.
• 9:19
Speaker 4: You guys are in Houston, yeah.
• 9:20
Speaker 2: So, have you run down here.
• 9:23
Speaker 4: We have talked about trying to go to Houston or San Antonio, but it just hasn't worked out.
• 9:30
Speaker 2: Plus, I think yeah, Plus we don't have it anymore.
• 9:32
  Speaker 4: They're gone now.
• 9:33
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 9:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, but the closest you're going to get to us is going to be Lufkin, maybe at Pine Valley or something.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: No, an eighth mile is Houston Motorsports.
• 9:40
  Speaker 3: Park.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: They run an eighth mile.
• 9:42
  Speaker 1: Houston Motorsports Park.
• 9:43
  Speaker 1: Houston Motorsports Park.
• 9:44
Speaker 4: OK, I'm going to have to look into those guys for next year, ok.
• 9:46
  Speaker 1: Yeah, most definitely.
• 9:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the closest we're going to get to you this year is actually going to be Little River there in Holland.
• 9:52
  Speaker 4: Oh.
• 9:52
Speaker 1: I know about Little River because I burned up a clutch in my Corvette at Little River, not just last year, yeah yeah, I had to put a new clutch back in it, but yeah, so I'm familiar with Little River, I actually it's really fun because it's off a highway but it's a two-lane highway and you actually kind of go down.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: You remember Bob's left.
• 10:13
  Speaker 1: It's a Little River.
• 10:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I like it because you can park underneath the trees and catch some shade in the afternoon.
• 10:20
  Speaker 4: Exactly yeah.
• 10:22
Speaker 1: All right, so Little River, I got that.
• 10:24
Speaker 4: Yeah, little River this year we're going to go to.
• 10:27
Speaker 4: We have, I think I want to say is that, four or five races at Extreme Raceway Park.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: Galen Smith has been very awesome.
• 10:33
Speaker 1: Why do I know that?
• 10:34
Speaker 1: It makes me not familiar.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: Why do I know that name, galen Smith?
• 10:39
  Speaker 4: He's a driver.
• 10:39
Speaker 4: He's also the track manager for Extreme.
• 10:41
  Speaker 1: OK.
• 10:43
Speaker 4: He's involved in a lot of things.
• 10:44
Speaker 4: I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't know him.
• 10:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe I met him in jail or something, yeah.
• 10:49
  Speaker 4: I hope not.
• 10:49
Speaker 4: And then Texas Motorplex.
• 10:53
Speaker 4: Eric and Demarcus are always awesome about hosting us there as well.
• 10:59
Speaker 1: You know a fellow by the name of Randy Weldon.
• 11:02
Speaker 4: The name sounds really familiar.
• 11:04
Speaker 1: He's a Ford Mustang guy and he's here in the Houston area and he's been with the Mustang Club and he's president of this and president of that and he is very involved.
• 11:16
Speaker 1: Now I don't know about drag racing, but he's certainly involved with Mustangs and performance yeah and performance, and I think that you would enjoy spending some time with him.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: So just a thought.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: You mean to run into the other one these days?
• 11:30
  Speaker 3: Probably so.
• 11:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, he's all over the place.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: You mentioned something about some tracks in Oklahoma.
• 11:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, we do have one race in Oklahoma.
• 11:36
Speaker 4: We're going to be in Ardmore in August.
• 11:40
Speaker 3: Ok, now we're going up there when it's cool.
• 11:45
Speaker 4: Usually when it's a hundred plus.
• 11:46
Speaker 4: Here at least it's under a hundred and a hard more.
• 11:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's now.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: It's 108 here, so it'd probably be at least 102 there.
• 11:56
Speaker 1: Anyway, the point made.
• 11:58
Speaker 4: But you know, usually, since it's up in the elevation, it's a little cooler too, which is nice.
• 12:02
  Speaker 1: Yeah, all right.
• 12:04
Speaker 4: We try to avoid racing in July and August as much as we can, just because we don't like racing in the heat.
• 12:09
Speaker 1: No, no, it's miserable actually.
• 12:12
Speaker 4: It is, let's say, full fire gear.
• 12:14
Speaker 4: You know, no AC.
• 12:16
  Speaker 4: No, thank you.
• 12:18
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: So what is what is the?
• 12:19
Speaker 1: Do you have any kind of other classes of cars that go down the track really fast and make a lot of noise doing it?
• 12:30
  Speaker 4: We have.
• 12:30
Speaker 4: I mean, it starts off slow with our, you know, the stock cars, the stock people that drive every day, and then it goes slowly, getting faster and faster and faster.
• 12:38
Speaker 4: And then we do have what's called our super pro muscle class, which are our big bad race cars.
• 12:46
Speaker 1: You don't have any cars running nitro, do you?
• 12:51
Speaker 4: I might have one or two, but I think the fastest I've seen anybody go is probably like a 530.
• 12:57
Speaker 4: 530 in the eighth, yeah.
• 13:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, all right, probably not, that's pretty quick.
• 13:03
Speaker 1: That is pretty quick yeah.
• 13:07
  Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's a fuel, a fuel altered.
• 13:09
  Speaker 4: That's pretty.
• 13:09
Speaker 4: He can crack it up as fast he needs to go.
• 13:13
Speaker 3: So you mentioned a couple of times about the clubs.
• 13:16
Speaker 3: What is the club aspect of this?
• 13:19
Speaker 4: So it's meant to be a club versus club event.
• 13:22
Speaker 4: So if you are coming out to race, you have to be a member of a club or racing for the club that day, and usually if you're interested, you just show up and say, hey, I want to run with you guys, and more than likely will say, hey, come on, throw our letter behind your number and let's run.
• 13:37
Speaker 4: So what we're doing is we're running for points.
• 13:41
Speaker 4: The further you get along in the day, the more points you accrue and the more points you accrue for the club.
• 13:48
Speaker 4: At the end of the season it turns into a bragging rights essentially, and also we do trophies and payouts at the end of the year.
• 13:57
Speaker 4: Like last season, my team, the Ford Muscle Club we actually did really well, we were in the lead through the entire season and then we got jumped the very last race, which is frustrating.
• 14:09
Speaker 4: That's also part of the reason why we decided to go ahead and join forces with another team.
• 14:15
Speaker 4: So now we're part of the Red River Muscle Club, so mainly Mopar and Ford.
• 14:20
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 14:20
Speaker 2: How many members are in that?
• 14:21
  Speaker 2: Do what?
• 14:22
Speaker 2: How many members in that?
• 14:26
Speaker 4: I would guess probably going to be at least 25, probably cars Some of us will actually like when you're at the away races.
• 14:34
Speaker 4: Those points are worth more points for the first round.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: Do they all show up at the events or you just get kind of stragglers coming in 10, 20 at a time, rather than the full compliment, the full monty.
• 14:45
Speaker 4: So we usually have a good set.
• 14:46
Speaker 4: Like traveling races, we usually bring at least 100, and then their local guys that want to run a bracket will show up as well.
• 14:53
Speaker 2: But specifically for your club, your Ford Mopar.
• 14:55
Speaker 2: You said there's sort of a small number, but do they all show up at every event?
• 15:01
Speaker 4: These for the local ones.
• 15:02
Speaker 4: Yes, for the away ones will probably get three quarters of us, just depending on who's got kids sports that way or what's going on.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: So if Don shows up in his Corvette, does he have to?
• 15:13
Speaker 3: Let's say he's a member of a Corvette Club down here in Houston.
• 15:17
Speaker 3: Is that sufficient for him to be able to run, or does he need to be one of the clubs that's part of your association?
• 15:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, so if you wanted to run with your club for the day, we can give you a temporary letter to sign, or you can run with the GM or any of the other ones that are on the track that day.
• 15:32
Speaker 3: Okay, it's whoever you want to talk to and hang out with.
• 15:35
Speaker 3: So long as you're with some club somewhere, correct Yep.
• 15:39
Speaker 1: Are you familiar with the fastest cars in the dirty South?
• 15:43
  Speaker 4: Bagley.
• 15:43
  Speaker 1: Okay Television show.
• 15:45
Speaker 1: It's a reality show and all I could think of is this is kind of along those.
• 15:53
Speaker 1: This is more grudge racing and match racing, if you will, as opposed to organized drag racing like you've got.
• 15:59
Speaker 1: Have you ever met any of those guys?
• 16:02
Speaker 1: Well, if you don't know the show, then you probably haven't met them?
• 16:04
  Speaker 4: Probably not.
• 16:05
Speaker 4: I honestly I would say, I am, I run my kid.
• 16:08
Speaker 4: I was soccer staff too, so I really don't.
• 16:10
Speaker 1: Are you a soccer mom?
• 16:12
Speaker 3: I am a soccer mom Side of mom in a blown, must thing In a blown must.
• 16:15

• 20:50
Speaker 1: So what's up with that?
• 20:51
Speaker 1: I mean, usually if you start losing blower belts, there's something else going on.
• 20:56
Speaker 1: Pull ease alignments, yeah.
• 20:57
Speaker 4: Originally it was the alternator in the it was starting to lock up.
• 21:01

• 21:09
  Speaker 4: And it's just.
• 21:11
Speaker 4: It's one after the other.

• 21:19
Speaker 4: Your I will ever.
• 21:20
Speaker 4: Now and then if my, if my car goes down, I'll just run my truck and it's not horribly consistent, but you know it counts for a point for the day.
• 21:28
Speaker 3: Ah, ok, that's right, you're right.
• 21:29
Speaker 3: That's what matters Yep.

• 21:59
  Speaker 1: Thanks again.
• 22:00
Speaker 1: We'll talk to you soon.
• 22:01
Speaker 1: All right guys, Bye bye, but I like it.
• 22:05
Speaker 1: Good stuff, I know.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be a lot of fun to go to, because you know I got this drag racing thing going through my veins.
• 22:13
  Speaker 2: Springtime.
• 22:14
Speaker 1: He's got the spring itch.
• 22:15
Speaker 3: It doesn't it doesn't go away it never has.
• 22:18
Speaker 3: And what I liked about those events.
• 22:19
Speaker 3: 120, 130 cars is a bunch of cars, but you know, if you go out to someplace when Baytown was running bracket races they may have two or 300 of them there.
• 22:27
Speaker 3: You could get one run in in about four or five hours.
• 22:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, ask Dan Holt.
• 22:32
Speaker 1: Ask Dale Holtqvist, ask any of the sportsmen.
• 22:33
Speaker 1: Ask any of the sportsmen.
• 22:34
Speaker 1: Ask the Emmons brothers.
• 22:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, which we have a wall.
• 22:39
Speaker 2: Yes, we have a wall.

• 22:47
Speaker 1: That would be awesome.
• 22:48
Speaker 1: It would be, wouldn't it?
• 22:49
  Speaker 1: All right?
• 22:50
Speaker 1: Got some more headlines to get to here.
• 22:53
Speaker 1: General Motors working with a link L link technologies to produce and sell remanufactured headlamps.
• 23:00
Speaker 1: What Revenging dealers and customers.
• 23:03
Speaker 1: More choice when a damaged one needs to be replaced.
• 23:05
Speaker 1: Price for a remanufactured headlamp is about 40% less than a GM original equipment headlamp, the automaker said, and an aftermarket headlamp costs about 25% more than a GM remanufactured one.
• 23:20
Speaker 1: So this is the best of both worlds.
• 23:23
Speaker 1: Did you understand that?
• 23:24
Speaker 3: No, okay, well, that's okay.
• 23:28
Speaker 1: These remanufactured headlamps, and I just put it in perspective for you.
• 23:31
Speaker 1: What they do is they take a broken one, one that's clouded over, doesn't work.
• 23:36
Speaker 1: They open it up and if it's still usable, they'll put a new lens in it and stick it back into it in whatever vehicle, yeah.
• 23:44
Speaker 1: Or, if it's not workable, they take the guts out of it, because now they have microchips in these headlights that power things and turn things on and turn things off, because some of them, you know, have turn signals in them as well.
• 23:58
Speaker 1: Right, right, and they sell it for half price.
• 24:00
  Speaker 1: Hello, I'm in.
• 24:02
Speaker 1: You ever found out how much your headlight is for your car?
• 24:05
Speaker 1: Oh, it's quite expensive, very expensive these days.
• 24:08
  Speaker 1: Okay, let's see.
