- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And it is only because of you.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: So thank you so much to everybody out there.

- 1:08SPEAKER_01: And it's only possible because you want real football.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Us talking to people around the league,
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: nonstop players,
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: coaches, scouts to just bring you something different behind that curtain.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: And here on this podcast, as always, we discuss everything NFC Norris.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Is it known as the Norris, the Central, the North?
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: What's at the tip of your tongue, Bob?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Eight and four, tied to the league's best record with two other divisions.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: The AFC West, the AFC North, and the NFC North are eight and four.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: But I don't think this division is quite as good as it's been the last couple of years.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: That's just my feeling after seeing all these 12 games.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: You definitely get a decent cross-section watching other games, right?
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: We've got three weeks to chew on here.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: I'm still not going to race to conclusions on who's a contender,
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: who stinks,
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: but I think we're starting to kind of get a little differentiation league-wide now
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: that it's been a few weeks.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: But these injuries, man, across the NFL, it's crazy.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Caleb Williams in the moment, everybody thinks it's season ending.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And then, oh no, it's a mild hamstring.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And Bob McGinn on this show,
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: using your institutional knowledge, you said, oh, it'll probably be about a month.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: And it looks like it's going to be a few weeks here.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: The way Case Keenum played,
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: and maybe if they believe in Tyson Bajin,
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: maybe there isn't a rush to get him back on the field.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: You really let that hamstring heal if you're Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah,
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: all the All these injuries,
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I always do chuckle, though,
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: because the NFL is just adding to its bureaucracy and rulebook and making up stuff
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: that doesn't make any sense every offseason.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And the roughing the passer penalties are ridiculous.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: There was another one,
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Chop Robinson,
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: just forgot to put a pillow down for Patrick Mahomes and turn the nightlight on
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: and get him some warm milk and read a bedtime story.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Ridiculous.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Did you see that, Bob?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: No.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It was awful.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Just terrible stuff.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: All of this is put into the game in 2026, and yet there's still injuries.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Quarterbacks are still getting hurt because guess what?
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: It's a contact sport until you just outlaw blocking and tackling.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: It's going to happen.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: But it does complicate things for all of these teams on the fly to try to win
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: a game, and some of these backup quarterbacks are getting it done.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Case Keenum.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Should we talk about Case?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: I would love to talk some Case Keenum.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: That was great.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So let's go to 2017, his great year with the Minnesota Vikings.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: So that was my last year.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: That was my first year with my son, Charlie, at BobMcGinnFootball.com.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And on the All-NFC North team,
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Aaron Rodgers, I think, played seven or nine games, something like that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So at quarterback, we had a tie for first place.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Keenum and Rodgers said one scout.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, Tyler, the guy was, he had a 98.3 rating.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: The Bikes went 11 and three, took over for Bradford and Bridgewater after injuries.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was unreal.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Let me get this quote.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: He was the Vikings' first first-team QB since Brett Favre in 2009.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Rodgers had just dominated.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: We had a hard time defending him,
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: said one scout, making plays that I never would have thought that he would make.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: He kind of is what he is, but he just wins.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: It's a credit to him and his coaches, Pat Shermer and those guys.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And in the awards in the Uh,
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: in the awards,
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: all division,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: he was offensive player of the year in the North and he tied Matthew Stafford as MVP
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: in the division.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Um, Bradford played 91 snaps, went on IR with a knee, uh, Bridgewater on the pup list.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Um, Okay, he was the ninth free agent quarterback signed that year.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Vikings signed him one year, two million on April 4.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: All right, now he's banged around.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: He went to Denver to be a starter, didn't play well.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: That's the end of his starting days.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And the other night he was incredible.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Last night, right?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: I was just trying to search a story I did on Adam Thielen at Bleacher Report that season.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: I hung out with him during a week, a little inside access type of piece at BR Mag.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And I couldn't find it.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: It's lost in the ether.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Isn't that sad when you write stuff and it's just gone?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's out there somewhere, but people will just have to take my word for it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I remember that Case Keenum season.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Well, he got guys to believe in that locker room, Thielen, Stephon Diggs.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: They ran the ball well, but I mean, he was a gunslinger too, man.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: He would hang in that pocket, shimmy around and And let it rip.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: And actually, we were talking a little before Ding and Record.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: I interviewed Case Keenum out of Houston.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Those Journal Sentinel days, actually.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: In preparation for the draft, Bob is grinding away at his series.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And I would just be writing a bunch of blog posts, reaching out to as many prospects as I could.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Really interesting to look back at some of his comments.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Because out of Houston...
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, the stigma was real.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: He threw for 155 touchdowns, an NCAA record, over 19,000 yards, also an NCAA record.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: But he knew he was going to be a sixth or seventh-round pick if he was drafted at all.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: And there's a little fire in some of these comments.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Let me just find a couple.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Quote, there are a lot of good players out there,
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: but they are who they are because of the people around them.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I think that Aaron Rodgers probably believes that too.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: I think it'd be really cool to learn from a guy like that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Very similar to the NFL.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: We game planned very specifically to each game.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is Kellen Moore, actually.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I forgot I talked to him too.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: That requires a lot of preparation.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: He put up big numbers at Boise.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Gosh, who else is in here?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Keenum, I will work my absolute hardest to get there.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I'm a competitor.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I want to compete against the best.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he...
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: He's still playing.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: That was 2012.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: It's 2026, man.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: He's doing something right.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And lo and behold, he operated that Ben Johnson offense with machine gun precision.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: It was fascinating to see a quarterback rip through his reads,
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: spit the ball out,
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Ben Johnson kind of turning that clock back to when he had Jared Goff.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: He made a joke about it in his press conference,
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: what it's like to have a quarterback who's a little more immobile.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't have the superhuman stuff that Caleb Williams gives you,
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: the Herculean plays that won them games.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Think about the two Green Bay games, the throw against L.A., pick your moment.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: You don't get that in a case Keenum or a Tyson Baygent.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But he was operating that offense.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: At a high, high rate.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Making a mockery of Vic Fangio.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Vic Fangio and the Eagles defense.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Case Keenum tore you up.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: What was his first year?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: 2013 with Houston?
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Well, that was the 2012 draft, so 2012.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: 2012?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go find his test score.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Hold on, Tyler, okay?
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: 2012, right?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Bob McGinn is off.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: I see the reflection of the window.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: He's left the kitchen.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: He has retreated to the basement.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: He's likely thumbing through files.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: He's searching.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: He's searching.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see a light coming on back there.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Is that Bob or is that Pat?
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I'm not quite sure.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: He's still looking.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: We are on the hunt for Case Keenum information.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: All right, here he comes.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: He found it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Mission accomplished.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: We've got the Wunderlich.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: The Wunderlich is secured.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: We have it.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Case Keenum.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: No, he was in the 2013 draft.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: I'm just looking at the website here, and it says, published on March 2nd, 2012.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Case Keenum.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: He had a 27, Tyler.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm talking about, baby.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: He was my 18th.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I was right.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: It was 2012.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: 27 on the test.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: He was my 18th ranked QB.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: That group won the top five,
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Andrew Luck, Robert Griffith, Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, and Brandon Whedon.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Boy, that's a pretty darn good group.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Isn't that amazing, though?
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: In 2026, Keenum is the one on Monday Night Football lighting it up.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Not Andrew Luck, not RG3, not Russell Wilson, none of these guys.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Not Tannehill.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: 6'1", 207, ran a 4.75.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: He had a weak arm, I wrote here.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: His record was 37-14.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Case stood the test of time.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Did you see what he said this week, Tyler?
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: After the game,
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: he said,
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Ben Johnson is the best play caller,
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: play designer, game planner I've ever been around.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Think how many guys he's been around.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: He didn't have to say that.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: he knows that quote's going to be seen by all his former coaches and head coaches,
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: coordinators.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: He didn't have to say that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I thought that was pretty meaningful.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: I loved the Bluey reference after the game saying,
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: oh, just watch a little Bluey with his daughter.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, how cool was that for his kids to watch him play live?
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: They know dad is late 30s backup quarterback,
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: goes to
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: work, helps out the starter, comes home,
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: and he's under the spotlight.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: So what did you see, Bob, when you really dug into Case Keenum in this game?
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Do you want to jump right to it?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: He picked them apart, right, T?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, he really did.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: He just picked them apart.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: So much poise and accuracy.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he doesn't have a big gun.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: First play, ran that short out to Burden for seven.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: 66-yard drive to start the game.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Got the ball out quick.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: One ball, he threw 48 yards.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It was too far for that speedster.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: What is it, Zavin Thomas?
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: He threw it 48.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I checked that out.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: No, he wasn't perfect.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: He overthrew Odunze on a deep corner.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Fourth and goal to three.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: He was late on that out to Burden.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Could have been picked.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: But then he came back with a 25-yard lob to Burden with Grenard knocking him down.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Next play, 22 to Odunze with Jordan Davis.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Jordan, is it?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Bearing down on him.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Made a great throw in a crowded middle to Odunze for 15.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Second half, knocked down by Hunt, found Raymond on the play.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Khalif gained a 12.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: 41-yard touchdown, blown coverage, found Raymond, exploited it, got it done.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Sidearm under the onrushing Grenard.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: He fumbled on the scramble.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: He got a lucky break on the bounce right back to him.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Fourth and two, we got
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: that hustling guy, Morrow, Jomo to jump, great cadence.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: There was a sack late in the game, and Jalen Carter, did you see that, Tyler?
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: He tenderly kind of helped him to his feet.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: I could not believe that.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Jalen Carter, he had to be so impressed by this older guy.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he tenderly helps him up from the back.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Scored on the sneak.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: After he's humiliated on that sneak, the old Kurt Warner Super Bowl sneak.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: You saw that, right?
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: That came after the help up by Carter.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying that the schematics on that quarterback sneak,
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, beautiful.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Where they fake the pulling guards.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: That's what Kurt Warner with Mike Martz did in the Super Bowl against New England at the one.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: It looks bizarre.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: It's like, why would we not block for an aging, immobile quarterback on a sneak?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: But you see Jalen Carter, he freezes for a half a second and it's an easy score.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, I thought they were going to get beat.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: With Keenum.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: I just did.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I thought, you know, Baygent would be in there at some point.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: He hadn't practiced all week.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I thought they were going to get beat.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know what the spread was, but it's a big win.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So they, um,
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: the Vikings lead the division at three,
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: you know, you got the bears and lions at two and one in green Bay at one and two.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Should we keep going on the bears on the bear offense?
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Quick comment on the Eagles.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: The, the, Unforgivable loss for Philadelphia.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: They might not be a good team.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: You barely beat the Titans.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Barely beat the Commanders.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: First couple drives, I'm thinking, this is Sean Manning offense.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: I kind of dig it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: It's different.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: They're doing some cool things with misdirection,
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: motion, throwing the ball, running it with Saquon.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: And then Hurts, his head bangs against the grass.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: That was weird, right?
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: He gets...
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: He's got to get sent to the tent by New York.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: It's driving Jalen Hurts nuts.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: You see how pissed off he is on the sideline.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: I think they're down 7-0 at this point, going into tie early in the game.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: And part of me thinks,
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: does Nick Sirianni maybe call a timeout here and give Hurts time in the tent to go
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: through whatever and then get him back out there
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: before Andy Dalton inevitably screws up?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: But then it's like, okay,
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: the optics would be pretty bad after the Brian Dable situation last year
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: with Jackson Dart.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: So I get not doing it.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, Andy Dalton throws a pick.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I was texting with my college roommate.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: He's a huge Eagles fan.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And he's like, obviously mad about that sequence.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: He's like,
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: why can't we just send Andy Dalton his corpse at this point into the line three
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: or four times?
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Just push him.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Who cares?
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: You're at the half yard line.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: But they didn't.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And that was the game.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, there was so much life sucked out.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Of the Philadelphia Eagles at that point.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: But just embarrassing for their defense.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: They made the move for Gernard, paid them all that money.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: You paid Jalen Carter.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: You've got,
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: allegedly,
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: real talent a couple years removed from embarrassing the greatest player in
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: the game, Patrick Mahomes.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Didn't cross midfield until it was 34-0.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, my God.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: And now you're getting shredded by a backup quarterback, a third-string quarterback.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know if this game said more about Chicago or Philly.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I kind of lean toward the latter because, right,
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: we were told by Eagles Communications that I shouldn't have mentioned the drama
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: in my Andrew McCuba profile.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: They were not happy that I even referenced the controversy with A.J.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Brown.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: They weren't happy with that, Bob.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, the mere reference to an obvious headline week to week to week.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: But still, it looks like rough times ahead for Philadelphia after trading A.J.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Brown.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: They didn't even compete.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: So there are weapons.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's getting all this mileage out of Kalief Raymond.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Do you believe this?
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Guy's winning inside, outside, all over the place, returning punts well.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: The 41-yard touchdown, broken coverage.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Something happened between Dejean and
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: the guy from Seattle, Woollen.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Loveland, I mean,
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: he still has not been a big part of the offense,
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: but the guy's a heck of a tight end, and he is blocking pretty darn well right now.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: But Dunzey, I mean, he bobbled that touchdown pass.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: It would have been another touchdown by Keetum in corner.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: They had to settle for a field goal on that one, I believe.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Odunzi had an offense.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: No, that was the drive.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: I think they went for it on fourth and goal, right?
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, was that it?
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: They got nothing instead of seven.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Komet was okay in the run game.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Now, Burden.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: You know, he's an unconventional guy.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: He's kind of a gadget guy.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: He can really run.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: First play of the game, he made the safety Epps miss, gained seven.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Inside handoff, reverse action, gain of seven.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Shovel pass for the touchdown, the big surge, broke a couple tackles at the five and surged in.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: 25 yard pass off short motion, he got lost on an over route against a zone.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Burden's kind of a real threat.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Second year guy, he's just gonna get better.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the line.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Bradbury had a hell of a game.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, Carter, and I watched him all night.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Carter and Davis were non-factors.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Do you believe that?
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Against Bradbury,
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: who cannot handle,
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: time has told us that he can't handle big noses, but he did a great job.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: I got him for one bad run against Davis, and pass protection, he was perfect.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So if he continues to play solid football,
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: You got Wright, Jonah Jackson, and Thune, they got a hell of an old line.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Now, they lose Braxton Jones.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: We don't know how long with the knee.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: They played Benedict, and he had a lot of problems.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: He had one, two, three, four pressures.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: But they got Ozzy Torpilo coming back very soon from that bad, was it, Patella.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: That was in the playoffs, I believe.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Torpilo looked like a hell of a young prospect last year.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: The backs, we know about Swift and Monongai, both good players.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Swift with those short,
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: choppy steps, but he will get north and south and hurt you when he finds room.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: He's a hell of a player, and we talked about Keenum.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: So that's their offense.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: They don't have much depth at wideout.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Thomas and Jotty Walker really haven't done much, young guys.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: But with two good tight ends,
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Some receivers,
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Raymond's playing out of his mind, three QBs and two good running backs.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: It's not a bad offense, you know?
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: Agreed.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Once they get that rushing attack really steamrolling downhill,
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: that can set the tone for whoever's playing quarterback.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Keenum, Bajent, Caleb Williams, Jim Miller, Shane Matthews.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Cordell Stewart had a cup of Joe with the Bears once upon a time.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Come on, give me a random Bears quarterback.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Well, this was how many consecutive starts for Williams?
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: It was 36.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: That's the longest streak since 78 when the streak of 36 games ended by Mr. Bob Avelini.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Avelini.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Mike Phipps later took over for Mr. Avelini in the mid-70s.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And you've got our good friend,
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Eric Kramer, who held the record up until last year for passing yards.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Got to check in with Eric.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Love that guy.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: That was a hell of a couple of stories you've done
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: on here.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Ben Johnson said the thing he really wanted to talk about was the defense.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And I agree.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: He said, how do we want to play on defense?
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: We outrun and we out hit and rally to the football.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: That's really what we want to be our calling card.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: And in the second half, they just carried the fight to the Eagles and it was just over.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: So there was some interesting developments on this defense.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Grady Jarrett is not done.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is, I think the best game he's ever had since he joined the Bears last year.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: He had four hurries against pretty good people.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Now I assume Juergens and Kendall are pretty good at left guard and center.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: They lost Jeff Stoutland, the great old line coach.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: That's probably a factor.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: But they got tremendous tackles and the right guard is okay.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: But anyway,
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Jarrett, yeah,
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: he got pancaked to the point of attack early by Kendall,
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: the young center, running play gain of 12.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: But other than that, he played 40 snaps.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: He led all the D linemen in snaps.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Played pretty good football, Tyler.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Now he's small and he's old.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: But he is quick, and maybe he's going to wear down.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: But right now, he's their best guy inside, and he played a hell of a game.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: He and Bradbury on the two lines were outstanding.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Elsewhere inside, Street only played 18.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: He's playing nose tackle.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: He didn't do much.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Vandenberg, the young rookie, 10 snaps.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: He was just okay.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: They played Gallimore, 12, the ex-cowboy.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: You know, at power end, They've started now three straight games.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: They have started James Lynch, an unrestricted guy from Tennessee.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: He's a bigger body.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Let's check him out.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, they need help against the run.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: He's got to come through.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: He's 6'3.5", 289 coming out, ran 4.96.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: He's got short arms.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he's good enough, but they're playing with him right now.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: now on the outside,
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: I thought Montez Sweat had a late fall on sack,
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: but I mean, he didn't do anything against Lane Johnson.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Interesting player was Booker.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Now, he was kind of silent the first two games,
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: but we liked Austin Booker down the stretch last year.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: He got the forced fumble on the punch out against Bigsby,
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: the running back, set up a touchdown, and then he had two pressures, one unblocked.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And he had to run stuff against a tight end.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: He's got to come through.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: And he had an encouraging moment here.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Then Oden Yangbo.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I can't pronounce that.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: 32 snaps for him.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: 30 for Booker.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: And 38 for Sweat.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Number 55.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: He flashes up field stuff, Tyler.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: One time he charged up.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Out of control and Barkley ran underneath him for a gain of 17.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: That was probably the long run of the game.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Down on the goal line, he beat Jenkins, that tight end, made the tackle, no gain.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: He plays inside on some passing downs because he's big enough and he will be the guard.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: He can edge a guard with his quickness.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: And then he had a sack against Kendall with a beautiful power rush, 3.5 seconds.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: You know, they're thin there, but maybe they can piece it together.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: That'll tell the story if they're really, you know, a Super Bowl caliber team.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: All right, let's look at the linebackers.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: TJ Edwards.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: He missed Barkley early, seven-yard run.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: He missed him in the backfield.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: But then he had a tackle for loss in the flat on Barkley, minus two.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: He had a nice zone drop.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Point blank range, he dropped that pick.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: He eluded Kendall, made a tackle, gain a one.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: And then he bailed right at the snap,
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: smart as heck,
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: been around the block and made a play on Shipley over on the sideline.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And then he got the interception zone, great catch, hell of a play.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to Devin Bush, his third game with the Bears.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: First play, bid on play action, crossing pattern, Lemon behind him, gain a 19.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Second play,
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Juergens,
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: the left guard,
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: he shoved him like 12 yards downfield, and the running play was worth 12.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's small.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: He's 5'11".
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: He got to hurry against Juergens.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: He does show the ability to blitz.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: He was slow to the outside on that 17-yard run by Barkley.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: He got carried for an extra three yards by Barkley on a gain of six.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: I don't think he fights blocks that well.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: That was evident on a carry by Barkley for 14.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: But then down on the goal line on the one,
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: he ran in and made a great tackle for loss for a minus one.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: DeMarco Jackson, the weak backer, he played 20, the strong backer.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: He got the late hit on Hurts and he had a flush.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the secondary.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: You know, apparently Tyreek Stevenson is available to play, but he only played four snaps.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Muhammad,
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: the rookie,
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, this looks like a real draft pick, a fourth-round pick from Washington.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And this guy's starting.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: He started as a nickel.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Now he's starting outside.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: He played terrific ball.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: There was no damage on him at all.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: He gave up nothing in this game.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: When they did hit a few things,
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: it was on Jalen Johnson,
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Devontae Smith beat him for 30, fine catch on it up, he didn't turn back.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Tackle for loss, he had a nice one on that swing pass, he shed a blocker.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: And Wicks got him for 19 later on in garbage time.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: And then Lewis is the slot, he went out with a hip injury late.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, with Kyle, Kyler Gordon already out, they don't want to lose Lewis.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Lewis got nicked on a PI for 21, but this guy, he is a quick fill in the run game.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: I admire his toughness, so we'll see.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: And then Woods is kind of a non-entity as the safety alongside
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: the good rookie, Thienemann.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Special teams, Santos, he's shaky on his kickoffs.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: He's trying all different types of kickoffs, short, long of the box, high, Line drives.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: He only had two of the seven either on the numbers or outside the numbers.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: That's what teams are trying to do.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: Torrey Taylor got screwed on the touchback when the tight end,
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Roush, the rookie, messed it up, the downing of it.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: He had two punts, but he hit them both great.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Hangs was 5-0-0 and 4-7-6.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Jonah Jackson had a personal fall on an extra point protection.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Raymond is a real good return guy.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: And Corey Blackwell is one of the – Josh Blackwell is one of the top special teams guys.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: He had that – in the league, he had that thing down.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: That's it on the Bears, Tyler.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: They're 2-1.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: So, big picture, the quarterback position.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: If you're Ben Johnson, you like what you saw.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: With a quarterback,
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: rifling through his reads, his progressions, one to two to three to four.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Everything's on time.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: That's where he wants Caleb Williams to get to.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: He has said it himself.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: He wants that completion percentage up.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: And maybe he does get there.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: In year three,
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: year two with Ben Johnson,
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: that's very conceivable with all of these weapons and a strong offensive line
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: that he can get to that point.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: I'm just really fascinated to see where this thing goes
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: because those quarterback contracts, it's all or nothing.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: There's no middle ground anymore, especially with Baker Mayfield getting paid.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Sam Darnold will get paid at some point.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Unless you're Malik Willis,
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: there's really not a middle class when it comes to paying quarterbacks.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: So you're talking north of $60 million a year, $70 million a year gets thrown around.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: At some point, Caleb Williams' representation himself, I'm not sure...
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: How that will go down.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: They'll want a lot of money.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: And it all comes down to the field, how he performs, obviously.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: And if he is able to calibrate within the X's and O's and everything
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: that Ben Johnson wants,
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: and they win a lot of games,
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: they win the division,
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: they win a playoff game or two, I'm sure he'll get to that tier.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: But a game like this,
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: I got to think it makes
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Ben Johnson at least use that other part of his brain
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: and okay.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Your move, Caleb.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Let's see you operate this offense.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Case Keenum just did it at 74 years old.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Not even played in a few years.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: I'm slightly exaggerating.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: He's old, but is he 38?
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: So it'll be interesting to just see how Bajan performs now.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: They like Bajan a lot.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: There's a reason they re-signed him.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: They could have traded him.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sure there'd be a market For a Tyson Bajant, somebody out there.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: They kept him.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: They paid him.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Let's see what he can do now as the starter, you would think.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: I think Ben Johnson was noncommittal,
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: but he said there's a reason that Tyson Bajant won the number two job
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: in training camp,
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: which tells me, okay, he'll be starting against the New York Jets this week.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: And then they've got the Packers after that.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: So just an interesting,
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: in the short term,
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: obviously,
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Fighting for positioning in the NFC North,
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: but also the long term with that huge financial decision.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Because if you're going to pay a quarterback that kind of money,
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: that means you can't pay other positions.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Unless you're the LA Rams and Stan Kroenke, I guess.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: But it does complicate matters with your roster building.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: And they've operated on that rookie quarterback contract to this point
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: with Joe Tooney and Jonah Jackson.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: And they just paid DeAndre Swift.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: They've been able to pay.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: They paid the safety on defense.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: It was hurt.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: They've been able to do some things, which you can't do once you pay the quarterback.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Huge decision that looms.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Again, they scored 59 points against Carolina.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's the norm for Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears offense.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Then they had three against Minnesota.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: So the verdict is out.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Nobody knows.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: You think Keenum's starting this week, don't you?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: I think Bayton.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: After that?
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: As
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: we're recording this, it kind of depends when people will be listening.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: So let me pull up the latest.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: I'd start Keenum.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: He's leaving the door open for Keenum or Tyson Bajan to
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Hang tight, Bob.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Quote, we'll have a discussion as a coaching staff and we'll see where we need to go
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: from here, but I said it last week and I'll say it again.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: There was a reason why Tyson ended training camp as our number two quarterback.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: That's Ben Johnson.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: If I was a betting man.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: I hear you.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Keenum looked great.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Why would you?
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: All right, where do we want to go, Tyler?
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Are we going to go?
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: Spread is only
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: three, by the way.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: The spread is only three.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Bears, Jets.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: In Chicago, I want to say.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: So the Jets are getting.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: I've seen the Jets two games in a row now, you know, in their entirety.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: They're not bad.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: They're not bad at all.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to last Thursday night, Atlanta 35, Green Bay 14 at Lambeau Field, right?
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: Good God.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's hard to believe that that happened.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Home opener, they've won 13 in a row.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: It's always a festive occasion, you know, start of a new year, NFL's smallest city.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just, It's an awesome environment.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: I like it on a Sunday afternoon a lot better than a Thursday night, that's for sure.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: But I always loved that home opener.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: Man, they desecrated that tradition and that game.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: The tackling was horrible.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: The offensive line play was worse.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Is Jordan Love ever going to run with the football?
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's had a carry all year.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure of that.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Just dreadful football.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: This is the eighth year of LeFleur.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: It didn't look very good, man.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah, he lost the right tackle.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: People lose people all the time, you know?
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: And want to start with the offensive line?
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about them.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Ron Wolfe in the house,
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Leroy Butler in the house, Desmond Howard, the Luminaries, 30 years later.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: They were all there?
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: 30 years since the 96 Super Bowl team.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: And they were treated to one of the worst losses at Lambeau Field this side of the dark ages.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: That's a fair statement, right?
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: You've covered all these games, watched all these games.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: It's 92.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: It's got to be right up there.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Tennessee came in there one night and did something.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: That was a terrible game.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: There's been some routes, but not many.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Well, the circumstances.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: It's one thing if Derrick Henry rushes for more yards than anybody ever.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: That's walked into Lambeau Field like he did last year.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: I think the Ravens as a team put up 300, but that's the Ravens.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: That's a good football team.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Atlanta might be good, but they were 0-2 coming into this thing.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: They were blown out by Carolina the week prior.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Michael Penix has had a million surgeries on his knees.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: This is his first start working off the rust.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's humiliating.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: I love the way you put it.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: Desecrate the stadium.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: It's humiliating.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Those fans have every right to boo, by the way.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Tucker Craft wasn't happy with that.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: It was strange to hear Tucker Craft.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Usually he knows exactly what to say, how to say it.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Always on point.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: That missed the mark.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: And then some.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: And he played a terrible game.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: We'll get to that.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: He was awful.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: Guess what?
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: The fans own the team.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: It's different in Green Bay.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: They don't like what they see.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: They should boo.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe he had policy, should open up the window and listen.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: I know they don't fire anybody.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: They don't make these big changes.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: It's embarrassing.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll have more go along soon on the situation.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Just leave it at that.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the O-line.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: We'll start with that, okay?
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: So you have veteran coaches.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: You've got Adam Stanovich.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: He's been the O-line coach.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: He joined LaFleur in 2019.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: O-line for three years and O-coordinator for four years.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: He's been around this group for seven years.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: No, this is his eighth year, excuse me.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Luke Butkus,
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: assistant O-line for three years,
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: O-line coach now for five years, replaced Stenevich.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: And Eddie Gordon, the assistant O-line coach, this is his third year.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: These are veteran people.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: And you've got a veteran GM,
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Brian Gutekunst,
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: who just has not given these people, you can just see it, good players.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: They lose the right tackle who's their best player, no doubt.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Banks, that was an unrestricted signing two years last year.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: He did not play well last year.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Now he's better than all the guards they got, but he sits out the game too.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: So they're down three starter, two starters.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: The guards they've played, Jacob Monk.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: Now he begins the year as the starting right guard.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Tyler, he was terrible in this game.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: You got, they start Jaeger Burton, the fifth round pick.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Their scouts were extolling after they drafted the guy.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: He was awful.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: And Donovan Jennings, a free agent who made the club three years ago, he didn't play that much.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: He played seven snaps.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: He had played the game or two earlier, and he does not look like a player.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: So what have they done?
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: Green Bay in a panic mode because they've drafted poorly and developed poorly.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Now they're going what they never do in Green Bay, desperation veteran moves.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Let's look what they got.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: They signed Lakin Tomlinson and I looked him up in my draft stuff.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: He was a first round pick of the Lions in 2015.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: He was such a disappointment with the Lions that after two years,
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: they traded him for a fifth round pick They send him to, uh, I'll get that later.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Tomlinson had,
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: he's six,
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: three and a half, three, 19, five, two, six, but this is his six, 12th year.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Now he was on the street, you know, he hasn't done anything.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Um, he had 23 on the test arms, 33 and five, eight.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: 10 and an eight.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: How did he play?
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Um, You know, he spent a bunch of years in San Francisco as a starter from 17 to 21.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: That's who he was
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: traded to.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: He did not make the Pro Bowl.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: He was an injury replacement for the Pro Bowl in 2021.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Don't call him a Pro Bowler.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: He's never been voted to a Pro Bowl.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: And he was a good player in San Francisco.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: I remember writing scouting reports, talking to scouts in those early years.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: But then he started to fall off when he went to the Jets.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Then he went to Seattle.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Talked to a scout today who's seen a lot of tape on this guy.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: He said the last few years he has struggled to stay on his feet athletically.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: He's an aggressive,
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: physical, and smart player who can struggle to mirror and match and pass pro.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: The declining skill set has started to show up.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: All right, they also got Makai Beckton, a first round pick
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: in 2020.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: Six, seven and a half, three, five, seven coming out.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Ran great, five, one, one.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: He's a Colossus,
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: 35 and five eighths arms,
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: 10 and three quarter hand, came out as a junior, 15 on the test.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Had problems early in his career.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: And then he...
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: He was playing quite a bit of tackle with the Jets.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: And then he goes to Philly, again,
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: with the great old line coach,
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Jeff Stoutland, and has his best year and they win the Super Bowl.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Then he goes to the Chargers last year, had a bunch of injuries, concussion, knee.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: And the scout said, Becton was on the street due to a shoulder injury.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, by the way, now, Tomlinson's on the 53, Becton's on practice squad.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: He was just recently healthy.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: He really struggled in L.A. last year.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: He's had really only one good year as a right guard in Philly.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: He's always been talented, but injuries and instincts were an issue.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: He got with Stuntland for one year and played the best he ever has.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: He just couldn't sustain it.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Now, there are other veteran guards on the street that Green Bay could have gone to.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: They could have gone to James Daniels.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: They could have gone to Will Hernandez.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: These are all guys, eight, nine, 10-year guys who are on the street, generally available.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Shaq Mason, the ex-Patriot.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: He's had some legal issues.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Jamari Sawyer, the ex-Charger.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: He's been around.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: He's had some injury stuff.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: And Robert Jones, the ex-Miami starter who played poorly in the preseason.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Now, Kevin Zeitler.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Who started all last year at Tennessee and he started all last year at right guard
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: for the Lions in 2024.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: He was in Green Bay for a tryout or a visit today.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Zeitler wants a lot of money and I don't know if Green Bay is going to give it to him.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: He knows he's going to be a starter when somebody suffers an injury.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: He's holding out.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Daniels is kind of the same way.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: He wants money too.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: Daniels has been with Washington.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: Pittsburgh and Miami coming off a torn pec a year ago.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: So are they going to activate Becton?
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: But in this game, what we've seen,
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Monk, I got him for six pressures and two bad runs.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was drafted as a center.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: He's small.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: He's 6'3".
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: He's smart.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: He's got short arms, 32 and 3A.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: Do they really think this guy's a player?
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: Boy, it hasn't looked like it yet.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to Burton.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: This is the first start he made.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: He gave up seven pressures.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: He had one false start and one bad run.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: He's just a rookie, man.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Is it a good draft pick?
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: I have no idea, but right now it's not.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: He's not helping them.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: And Jennings, a street-free agent, in 24, he's been around.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: He's 6'4".
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: He doesn't look like a player either.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: Belton, the guy who did look fairly decent at right guard last year, or no,
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Ryan played right guard and then moved to center,
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: didn't he, at midseason, Sean Ryan.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: I think Ryan's a better guard than center too,
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: but Belton in this game, One, two, three, four pressures, two bad runs.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: He's not playing well.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: You know, they want to just be massive.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: You can tell by who they picked up here now.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Belton and Tomlinson, they're physical, straight ahead guys.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: That's what Belton is.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: That's, well, Monk's not that.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know what Monk is.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: Ryan is that.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Is Ryan a center?
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: He played pretty good in this game.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: You can't Blame Sean Ryan on this one.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Morgan, he wasn't bad either.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: He gave up one sack late and three pressures.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: But against the Atlanta front doing all this damage, Atlanta?
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: With Brandon Dorlis,
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: Lacalle London,
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Mason Smith,
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: Z'Darrius Smith,
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: ex-Bear Gervon Dexter,
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Brian Trice and Zach Harrison,
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: just shoving them around and getting pressure on love all night long.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: Are you kidding me?
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: They're desperate, obviously, because they do not make these veteran kind of acquisitions.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: They don't want these kind of players.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: That's never been Brian Goodenken's modus operandi.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: And they have to,
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: they're trying to save face and As embarrassing as it is,
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: they're going off the street getting old guys.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Brian Gutekinds before the season really expressed confidence in
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: the offensive linemen they have.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: Going 13-14 deep, said he was worried other teams could poach their guys.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: And I think it was our former colleague Tom Silverstein that asked him the question
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: at that press conference.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: If he Had looked around the wire or for other options on the offensive line
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: and Gutekind stood by what they had in house.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: And you're right, here they are.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: Lincoln, Tomlinson.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, these are names from yesteryear.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Kevin Zeitler, he's played forever.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: And I wonder what kind of money he wants and I wonder how much game he has to give
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: because whatever the cost is,
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: if he's the best of the bunch and you just had him in on a visit,
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Just pay it.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, you studied him.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: He was with the Lions two years ago, Titans last year.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: What do you think he has left?
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: A lot.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: He's from the state, too.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a Milwaukee guy, Wisconsin.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: So why not just pay up?
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: Just pay him.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know what their cap situation is.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: But if you're this desperate, I guess, already, what's a little more desperation?
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Well...
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: How long is Banks going to be out?
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: He's got a toe and a knee, I think it is, right?
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: He's a big, massive guy, too.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: They have these brawlers and maulers.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: They can't do anything in the screen game or any kind of counter stuff or zone.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: They got to be straight ahead up, push straight ahead, wall off, block.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Boy, that ground game has changed a lot under LaFleur.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: All right, let's keep going.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: The receivers, Golden had a good game, you know.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, caught five for 100.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: I think that's a career high.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: Now, he did drop a couple balls.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: He dropped a slant.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: He dropped an out.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: Love didn't get a lot of help in this game, but he didn't play very well himself at all.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Watson, he had a holding penalty.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: He had a touchdown off motion.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: He had a catchable ball on an out that was knocked away by C.J.
- 50:35SPEAKER_00: Henderson.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: And he beat the safety Nick Bowman on a 34-yard play.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: Sky Moore had a screen that was pretty good.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Melton and Sturdivant, the young guys each played 21.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know how long Ryan's out.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Or Reed, excuse me.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: All right, that's their Tucker Craft.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Poor overhead adjustment to an out and on an out and up against Daniels on a deep throw.
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: Dropped ball that was broken up by Bates.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: I'd give him a drop on the thing.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: He dropped a screen.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: He dropped the ball inside.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: Terrible game.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: How can a guy have that ability play like that?
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: He just drags down the whole team on a night like that.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Jonu Smith made one good low catch, 22 snaps for him, 50 for Kraft.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: That's it at the receivers, the running backs.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: 15 for Lloyd, 24 for Iowa, Iowa's Johnson, and 27 for Brooks.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: Obviously, they don't trust Lloyd, you know.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's the guy with all the ability.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: 15 snaps.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: He's third in the snap list.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: He looks like he wants to bounce things outside.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: Third and one, though, he got the thing.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: He's got a lot of moves, but he's not making people miss one-on-one.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: He tried that against the cornerback, Hughes, and just got drilled.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: Johnson broke a tackle by Bowman in the flat,
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: gained an extra nine, and Brooks is just kind of a guy.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: Jordan Love.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: They got to roll him out, and he has to demonstrate the ability to run the football, Tyler.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: He's offering no run dimension right now.
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: Now he's under siege, certainly in this game, behind a deficient offensive line.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: He seldom had a clean pocket, but yet he threw wildly on third and four to incomplete to Watson.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: He overthrew Golden when he was open on a double move against Hughes.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: He made a good bomb to Golden for 45.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: He hit Watson on the touchdown off rollout action, one of those rollover deals.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: He underthrew an open golden on a corner.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: So Bowman came over and almost picked it up, broke it up.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: He threw a beautiful deep curl for 22.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: He made a bad decision on an incompletion to Caleb Johnson when Kraft was open on
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: the other side.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Going down, he threw a backward pass.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Caromed over to Kraft.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: He got lucky there.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: He suffered a batted ball, threw a ball low on the flat.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: He had a bunch of drops, no doubt.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: 15-yard touchdown.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: He fit that thing in there.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Dropped interception by the safety Watts.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: He got picked on the last play.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: At least he finished the game, unlike Aaron Rodgers.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: So that's it on the offense, Tyler.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: 14 points.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: Would Aaron take him out, take himself out of those situations?
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: And the coaches went along with it always, too, you know.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, Aaron Rodgers was the one in charge those four years.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was dismal.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: I can't sit here and.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: Declare Jordan Love the future of football after a game like that.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: Bob McGinn, that is for sure.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: And there are plenty of justifiable excuses.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: He's under siege.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: All of the drop passes.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: But you're paying a quarterback $55 million a year to rise above.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: He could not rise above.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: I would like to see Matt LaFleur and the Packers create some easy completions.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, the completion percentage is awful.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: I was looking back in 2023 when they were 2-5 and nobody knew if Jordan Love was
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: the long-term answer.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, Brian Kutikens himself had that mid-season press conference and said,
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: okay, these last 10 games, we're going to figure out if he's our quarterback.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: At that point, he was dead last in the NFL in completion percentage at, I believe, 57.7%.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: And he's lower than that through three games.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: 52.4.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: Much lower.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: So something's amiss, and it's all the above, but create some easy completions.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: You just watched Case Keenum.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: You broke it down on how, I mean, the first drive, right?
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: Bing, bang, boom.
- 55:39SPEAKER_01: They're moving right down the field.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Kind of all or nothing with this Packers passing game.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Too often.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: Even last season.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: You should never lose a road playoff game when your quarterback throws for 300,
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: four touchdowns and no picks.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: But there were a lot of incompletions in that game too.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: I love the explosive plays.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: It's a game of explosive plays.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: But a little short to intermediate passing game wouldn't kill you too if you're Green Bay.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: Tyler, he's lost his security blankets, Romeo Dobbs, Jaden Reed, and Dontavian Wicks.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: Golden's not a security blanket.
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: Watson's not either.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: The only one he's got is crap.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Melton's not that.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: It's more of a personnel issue to you than a schematic one.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: That's part of it.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like it was a problem last year, though, too.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: They let Wicks and Dobbs get out of there, and they lost Reed with an injury.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: It's not a very good receiving core.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: And they got no game.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: That's null and void with this line and those backs.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: They traded for Caleb Johnson, right?
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they traded for the guy.
- 57:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:06SPEAKER_00: Jacobs, I don't know if he even has a future in Green Bay.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 57:15SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the D. They do have
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: an undrafted quarterback coming to town.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: So, well, we'll get to it, I'm sure.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Hit on Packers defense first.
- 57:26SPEAKER_00: Let's stick, okay, let's remember, let's just go to that guy.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: So I got what a scout said on this Jalen Daniels,
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: who's going to be quarterbacking Tampa Bay from Kansas.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: He's six foot, one half inch.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: He's a little guy, 221.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: He's thick.
- 57:44SPEAKER_00: He ran 4.64.
- 57:46SPEAKER_00: I had him as a 13th guy.
- 57:49SPEAKER_00: He has some explosive playmaking ability.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: He's a four-year captain, first time ever in school history, which is pretty impressive.
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: Has a strong arm when his feet are in sync with his release.
- 58:02SPEAKER_00: Has a lack of height and some injury history as well.
- 58:06SPEAKER_00: His tendency to run could impede his longevity, but he could be a solid backup.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: That's a one scout, his assessment.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: So they got a massive break with 0-3 Tampa Bay,
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: who's going to be frothing at the mall to get out of that for Todd Bowles.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: And now they don't have their indispensable player, Baker Mayfield.
- 58:31SPEAKER_00: All right, defense.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: Boy, Bill Callahan,
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: the old offensive line coach with the Wisconsin background, he really got after him.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: Panics.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: He's got braces out there.
- 58:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, he looked terrible the first two series.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: Didn't you think, Tyler?
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: He just looked like he wanted walking gingerly.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: I just thought this is going to be a route.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: But then they started running the ball and it was just over.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the front.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Ford was not a factor.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: 28 snaps.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: He really didn't get it done.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: He just wasn't effective.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: Then you got Brooks.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: He blew up the center once for a tackle for loss.
- 59:21SPEAKER_00: He got to run stuff against a double team.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: He missed a tackle.
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: He played 43 inside.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Wyatt, Devontae Wyatt, played 34.
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: He was a disappointment in this game.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: He got pancaked by that really good guard, Chris Lindstrom, on the run for 31 yards.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: He didn't get anything done.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Hargrave, Javon Hargrave, the veteran, 33 snaps.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: Third and one, why is he on the field?
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: He should not be on the field in any short yardage, any rundown.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: They ran right at him, six yard touchdown.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: He got solo blocked by the left tackle, Jake Matthews.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: He missed a tackle.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: He had one hurry.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: Now he is a pass rusher.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_00: That's what he has.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: That's why they paid him all that money.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: He's not going to stop the run for you.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: And McClellan, the rookie 29 snaps, made no plays.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: All right, let's look outside.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: Van S, he had two pressures and one run stuff.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: Cox, Brenton Cox on the other side, you know, he's starting for Parsons.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: He was unblocked one time, stayed home, made the tackle, minus two.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: He had a roughing the passer penalty, and he beat a tight end and had another run stuff.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: He hasn't had any pressures yet, but he's not a terrible football player.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: He goes pretty hard too.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's that bad.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: Sorrell, second year man over on the other side, he got edged one time, a gain of 16.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: He made nothing happen.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: Dennis Sutton, the rookie, 39 snaps.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: He got a holding call on the right tackle, Jawan Taylor.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: Made nothing happening.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the backers.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: Not good.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: Franklin and Cooper.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Let's start with Franklin.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: They each play 71 snaps for Franklin.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: Cooper played 54, got injured.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: McDuffie then played the last 18.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: All right, Franklin.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: He got pancaked by a puller.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: Fine diagnosis.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_00: Tackle for loss.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: He beat the pulling guard Bergeron.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: He does.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_00: He reacts.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: He sees things.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: He's got a nose for the ball.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: But he's small and he gets covered up.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: He also is a pretty good tackler.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: He gets guys down for his size and his age.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: He gets them down when he hits them.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_00: But he overran the ball on one play, gaining nine.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: On the 55-yard run by
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: Bijan, he was two steps late to the sideline.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: He lacks range, obviously.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: He was a seventh-round pick.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: You know, he wasn't fast coming out.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: He runs through, knocked into a tight end, was late, gained a 10 on the ground.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: He missed London.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: Fell on his butt in space, gained a seven.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: He missed Bijan inside, gained a six.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: Tackle for loss on the goal line, nice play.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: He ran in and missed Bijan in the backfield, gain of 31.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: He got overpowered on a cutback, gain of seven.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: There's a lot more negative than positive there.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to Cooper.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: All right, now this is a down and dirty game against really good people.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: That's a good offensive line for Atlanta.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Those guards,
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: Bergeron and Lindstrom,
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_00: and Matthews can still play a tackle, and the center's Nuzo is smart.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_00: Cooper just kind of flits around, Tyler.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: He jumps inside on a screen.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: Bijan bounces outside, gain of seven.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: He gets killed at the point of attack by the tight end Charlie Warner on the gain of 55.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: He's a grab tackler.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_00: He grabbed Bijan's towel.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: Bijan kept going, six more.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: He missed Zacchaeus on a dump, gain of five.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_00: He got pancaked by Taylor at the point of attack, gain of 10.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_00: Made a tackle for loss on the next play, minus three, eluded Bergeron.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_00: He overruns a play, gain of eight, and then he suffered a concussion late in the third.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: Poor linebacker play.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the secondary.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: All right, Cissé played all 70.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: They all played 70.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: They all played every snap, and Bullard played 46 at the Knicks.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: All right, Cissé.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: Well covered early,
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: deep ball to Dotson,
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: well covered, incomplete, deep out to Branch, incomplete, well covered.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: He missed the tackle on the 55 yard run by Bijan, he was an ankle biter, he missed the thing.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: He had another miss at the line of scrimmage, gain of 16.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: Another ankle bite attempted.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_00: Illegal contact against the rookie branch.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: He bid on a double move.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: London gained a 68.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_00: At least he showed catch-up speed after he got burned.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: And then London beat him on an end for 16.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a rookie and he showed growing pains here.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_00: Nixon missed the tackle on Bijan on the 55.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: He gave up the sideline on that 31-yard run.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_00: What's he doing getting inside on that thing?
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: Stay outside.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: Your help is inside.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: And then he got beat by London on London Big Boydum on that 50-50 ball for 40.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the safeties.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: Evan Williams.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry, came from deep, pressured Penix.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: He had a terrible angle on that 55-yard run.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: Just get him down.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_00: You got to throttle down and get to the sideline on the thing.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_00: He looked at fault on that five-yard touchdown pass to Hooper.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_00: And the two-point pass, I can't remember what happened there.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: McKinney, he made a great exceptional break on that dig route for the pick.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_00: He can do that.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: That makes him dangerous.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: But he is worthless in the box.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_00: He was in position to make that play on that 55-yard run.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: The guy gained an extra 25.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: He says, let someone else do it.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: That's like his philosophy, man.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: He let Dotson run through him for a first down at the stakes.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_00: He didn't get down and dirty, and then he lets that little Dotson run through him.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: He will not throw his body around.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: He just won't do it, Tyler.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: Unless, yeah, he will do it when he absolutely positively has to do it.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: When it's either do it or you're going to lose your career, he'll do it.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: But that's a rarity.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: And on the six-yard touchdown, he gave up on the tight end, let the runner go.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: The tight end was blocking him.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: Bullard, he disguises his blitz as well.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: He missed Branch.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: 16, London beat him inside.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Special team, Smack had the field goal blocked because Belton blew it.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_00: Good job on kickoffs.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_00: He's directionally very good.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_00: I think he's one of the best I've seen in the league.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: He gets them up.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_00: The numbers are outside almost every time.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: Waylon bounced back real good.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: Five punts, 50.0, 45.6, 4.66 on the hang time.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_00: Sky Moore, that guy's running hard.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_00: He's a bitch.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_00: Five kickoffs, 26.8.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_00: I respect his toughness.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_00: McDuffie had a missed tackle.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_00: That's it for Green Bay.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: They're one and two.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_01: Can I request that we
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_00: hear that one again?
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: He's a bitch.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: And the most endearing intonation possible.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_01: Beautiful.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_01: Beautifully put.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: He was.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, this game, it really was a bitch for the Packers.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, watch 29 on that long.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_01: Bishon Robinson was at the 55-yarder.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: If you isolate on him,
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: it's basically what Bob McGinn has been saying on this podcast
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: since Xavier McKinney put on a Packers jersey.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: It's just a wild ride, man.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_01: You're at Disney,
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: and you're just taking twists and turns and It's a small world after all kind
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: of moment for Xavier McKinney on that.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: But when it comes time to Pro Bowl voting, people will see that on a highlight tape.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: They'll see that pick, and he'll get votes because he got a pick.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's funny.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: You don't really see the NFL Network or
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_01: the NFL YouTube channel pumping out 15 minutes of lowlights on these players.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_01: That doesn't really happen, does it?
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_01: That's why we have the greatest to ever do it.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_01: Bob on the show.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: There's no way you can put lipstick on this pig.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: The Packers are in a world of hurt right now.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: I guess they're saving grace as they've got an undrafted rookie from Kansas this week.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_01: Chicago looks pretty damn good without their starting quarterback,
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: but I'm guessing he'd face another backup quarterback in that game.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: There's talent.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: I think that we do differ.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_01: I feel like there is enough personnel here to put up a lot of points.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: I still like Jordan Love.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: I like the weapons probably more than you.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_01: I agree that the offensive line is a mess.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: Figure it out.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: Give them some time some way, somehow.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_01: Run the ball a little some way, somehow.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: And maybe you can get back.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, there was a point last year, they're 9-3-1 going to Denver.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: You're thinking NFC North champs.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: You're thinking host and playoff games.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_00: That's what we were talking about, yep.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_01: Watson gets hurt.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_01: Granted, he did return.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_01: But Micah Parsons tears his ACL.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: There's no retribution for your quarterback's head getting whacked into the turf.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_01: You lose that game.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: You blow the 10-point lead with two minutes to go against Chicago.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_01: You get steamrolled by Baltimore.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: You rest your starters against Minnesota.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: Another inconceivable loss to Chicago.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: Inconceivable week one loss to Minnesota.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: What was it?
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_01: How many unanswered points?
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_01: 28.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_01: Whatever it was against Carson Wentz.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_01: And now fans are wondering if a return to those dark ages is a possibility.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_01: And you watch that loss to Atlanta.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know how you couldn't let those thoughts creep into your mind.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: It was ugly.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_01: But you've got a quarterback.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_01: You've got an edge rusher.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: You've got some weapons.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: There's enough hope to conjure, I'll say.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_01: I'll leave the door open.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_00: So Tyler, this is an easy game to prepare for, isn't it?
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: Now, yeah, you're going down in the heat, no question.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_00: And you're going to be wearing green jerseys.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_00: Bucks will make sure of that.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_00: Down there this week for the Vikings, it was 83 degrees, 66% humidity.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_00: That's 149.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: That's a massive red flag.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_00: It's a bitch for northern teams going down there.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_00: All those IVs, I used to see them in that locker room.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_00: All right, LaFleur's got 10 days to teach off this thing.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_00: You let them have the weekend off.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_00: They're fresh.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_00: He can be on them constantly.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_00: All these coaches, there are 35 coaches, whatever they got.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_00: They can be on these guys.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_00: They're well-rested.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_00: You have got to come out and play with fire and energy right from the opening kickoff.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_00: Blow them out,
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: get after this young guy,
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_00: knock them out of the game,
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_00: attack, just Play reckless and fearless with pride, energy.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_00: Blow them out.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: This is what LeFleur's got to show in this game.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: Not just a 17-13 victory or something.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_01: Agreed.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_01: You should run them out of their own building.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_01: Anything less would be discouraging for a team that fancied itself a Super Bowl contender.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_01: Do you have a prediction for us?
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: Do you?
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: See, that's poor journalism on my part.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_01: My question should have been, what's your prediction, Bob?
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_01: Give us a score.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_01: And then, subconsciously, you would have jumped right to one.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_01: I think Green Bay wins, but I think it's close.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: I don't think you're going to get that blowout.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: I think they just find a way to Eek it out.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_00: This old line's got to deal with Dita Vea.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: That's nasty.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_00: Ask Blake Brandel of the Vikings.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: He's a beast.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a reason that he was holding out for more money.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: He deserves it.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_00: So I don't think they're going to do it.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: They're desperate, man.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: I know they don't have Baker Mayfield.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: They're 0-3.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Todd Bowles is fighting for his job.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, LeFleur is going to try to run the ball.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: He's got to, but it's going to be hard.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: It's going to be hard against that club.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_00: Alex Anzalone is there.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, they got some players.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_00: Reuben Bain didn't play against the Vikings.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: I think he might be back.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_00: But they're going to be on the field all day, I suspect, and Tampa will tire.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_00: That defense will tire out.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: Let's keep it moving.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the Vikes, huh?
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: So they're 3-0, Tyler.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_00: They lose Jefferson after seven plays,
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_00: and they really struggle, and it's a battle, but they win the game 23-16.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: It went right down to the end.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: Baker Mayfield got injured in the last couple minutes, and the Vikings prevailed.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_00: All right, what do we want to look at here?
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_00: Tyler Murray is now 4-0 against Baker Mayfield.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_00: Two Heismans, two number one picks.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_00: Mayfield was really rattled by the Vikings.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_00: We'll get to that in a second.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_00: so Jefferson's gone,
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_00: so Addison has to step up to be the wide receiver one, and he did it.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_00: Deep corner against cover two, dragged that toe, replayed, Concurred with a call, 30-yard gain.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: 41-yard touchdown against Jacob Parrish, a second-year corner.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_00: Better adjustment.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_00: They were stride for stride, and Addison's got a lot of ability, Tyler, and he made the play.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_00: He was against bump coverage and made an inside release.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_00: But again, we'll get to Murray, but Jennings played 47.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_00: Felton played 32.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_00: Neither one of them caught a ball.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_00: Hawkinson played 50 snaps, caught two for 11.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_00: They were null and void in the air.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_00: They lose Jefferson.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_00: They won the game because of their D and their special teams.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_00: They suffered an injury.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: You got their seventh year tight end, eighth year Josh Oliver, really an outstanding blocker.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_00: Out for the year, torn biceps.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_00: He had 24 snaps before he got hurt.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_00: He did not play great in this game, but he's a big factor behind Hawkinson.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: Moving up has to be Gavin Bartholomew, a second-year guy who's really never played.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_00: They got Cam Grandy on the practice squad.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_00: All right, the offensive line.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_00: All right, Blake Brandl had his hands full like everybody does against Vito Vea.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_00: He had a bad run against Vea for one.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_00: He had a bad run.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_00: They got another beast inside too, Elijah Simmons, and he couldn't move Simmons unblocked.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_00: He had a bad run against Vea and a batted ball.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_00: Vea walked him back to the passer.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: But, you know, Brandl, is he as good as Bradbury, the guy they let go?
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think so.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_00: Who did they start last year?
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_00: Was it Brando all year?
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: But he's okay.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_00: Their line is intact.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_00: That's what's huge.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_00: Unlike Green Bay and Detroit, their line is intact.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: Go from left to right.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_00: Derisaw, he had one holding penalty.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_00: He gave up half a bad run.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: Protection, outstanding against whatever they were throwing at him.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_00: Guys like the ex-Lyon, Mohamed, couldn't get anything against him.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_00: They don't have much outside really with Bain injured.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_00: The left guard was Jackson, the second-year man.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: He had some problems.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_00: He had half a bad run against Simmons.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_00: He had a hole against Roberts, another big guy inside.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_00: Gave up a flush.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_00: Half a bad run against Roberts.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_00: He pancaked Veya on fourth and one, gain of three.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: It was a massive block by Jackson.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_00: You know, I think the guy's come on in his second year.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_00: He was a first-round pick.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_00: He's going to be all right.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_00: Brando, we covered the right guard, Fries, the ex-Colt.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_00: He was okay in this game, and O'Neal was really good at protection.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_00: Both tackles were outstanding.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: He had two bad runs.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_00: They ran the ball a lot.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: All right, Kyler Murray.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: All right, so he starts over Wentz.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_00: He had only played 11 plays in the first two games, and he's back.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_00: First play, drills Jefferson on a dig for 22.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: I write down play action.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_00: Exclamation point.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: It was a great throw, Tyler.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_01: Just watch it here.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_01: I'm actually watching the replay as you're dissecting.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_01: That was a hell of a throw.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_00: But that was it.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: Third and 10, the pocket breaks down.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: What's he do?
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_00: He runs for 11.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_00: Beautiful, man.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_00: This was early.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: This is all chronological order.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_00: The sack, it's on him.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_00: He ran to it 4.8 seconds.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_00: Made a great throw in that deep corner to Addison for 30.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_00: Now this is still first half.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_00: And he made a really good toss on that 41 yard touchdown.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: Vail was bullying Brandel and bearing down on him.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_00: It was a hell of a throw.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: He had three batted balls in this game, Tyler.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_00: One by Roberts, one by Vea, and another one by Vea.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_00: The guy just collapses the pocket.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_00: Love's going to experience this Sunday.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_00: He underthrew an open Addison on a likely touchdown deep.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_00: He had a delay of game penalty.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_00: It was reeked of lack of preparation.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: Hawkinson was open on the sideline, 20-yard gain.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_00: He missed him.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_00: He has jittery feet.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_00: He throws high, he throws offline.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_00: Without Jefferson, he seemed to lack confidence in the people running the routes.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_00: They had nothing going on.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_00: He ran around, took another sack, five seconds, five minutes left.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_00: Not a very inspiring performance by Murray.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_00: Wentz did not play.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: The running backs, Aaron Jones is really carrying the show without Mason.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_00: He played 47 snaps, and they only gave
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_00: DJ Dallas nine and Claiborne, the rookie, three.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_00: They're going to have to integrate those guys.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_00: Jones is going to wear down, man.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_00: He dropped the promising screen pass.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_00: Aaron Jones, he always lowers that shoulder when contact comes.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_00: You respect the hell out of the guy for that.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_00: He had gave up half a hurry against Cancy.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_00: He got lined, messed up with a D lineman.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_00: Fourth and one, tight run.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_00: He got it, gain of three.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_00: Then he hurt his right knee, sat for a while, came back.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_00: Dallas gave up a sack.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_00: Claiborne, they don't trust Claiborne.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_00: That was his problem, the grasp of the offense coming out of Wake.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_00: Bredesen, the fullback, the banger, 10 snaps.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_00: You'll see him against the Bucs.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_00: First play, ISO on Dennis, the backup backer.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_00: No, he's a starter.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_00: Gaining nine.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_00: And he pancaked the safety Smith on an ISO.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: And he just roughs them up, unpiling.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: I like Bredesen.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_00: All right, that's it on the Viking offense, Tyler.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_00: How many yards?
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_00: 234, and they win this game.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_01: What's the status of Justin Jefferson while we record this?
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_00: Ankle injury, right?
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it seems like they kind of dodged a bit of a bullet on what it could have been.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_01: If you just hang tight, I can give our listeners something here.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_01: Not expected to miss any time.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_01: The latest we have.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_01: That's big.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_01: He went down and it just seemed like the whole passing game was out of sorts.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_01: Hey, before I forget, too,
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_01: talking to Jalen Daniels, the Buccaneers quarterback that Green Bay will be facing.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_01: Just hit me that I had Lance Leipold, the Kansas head coach on the pod a few years ago.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_01: You know, he was here in Buffalo and then he was in Wisconsin before that.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_01: So we've kind of kept in touch over the years.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_01: And I just figured out what the hell,
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_01: I'll just shoot him a text message while we're recording the podcast,
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_01: get his thoughts on Jalen.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_00: And he wrote, he goes,
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_01: that's awesome for Jalen.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_01: He has once again persevered and found a way.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_01: I hope he can show enough in these couple opportunities to show that he can last
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_01: in this league.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_01: Captain there several years, like you noted, at Kansas.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_01: Vikings, it's all about the defense still.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_01: They're 3-0.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_01: I think that even Chase Edmonds, one of Kyla Murray's best friends, played with him in Arizona.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_01: Bullish thinks this is going to work out and that they'll be putting on a fireworks display.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_01: Even he said that with Kevin O'Connell's offense,
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_01: what he knows about it,
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_01: what he knows about Kyler Murray's game,
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_01: he expected things to be a little work in progress-y early on.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_01: And you throw a concussion in there, then Justin Jefferson gets hurt.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to rush to any conclusions either way because I still like this fit.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_01: I still think he can work in this offense.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: He doesn't need to be an all-pro with the way this Minnesota defense has been playing either.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_00: He's got a healthy O-line.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_00: He does not have depth at wide receiver.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_00: He lost his blocking tight end.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_00: They lost their power back.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: They're pretty thin on offense.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_01: I think most coordinators would take a Justin Jefferson and a Jordan Addison, though, right?
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: I guess you're right, Tyler.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_00: And Jawan Jennings is not bad as a three, is he?
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, but still, like an injury or two, and you see what you see against Tampa.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_01: So maybe we're both right there.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_01: They can't lose a guy or two offensively.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_01: Because they don't have that depth.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_00: All right, the defense.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Bucs couldn't get anything going.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_00: They were just stymied by Brian Flores.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_00: Mayfield was rattled, wild.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_00: What was Mayfield?
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_00: 17 out of 34, passer rating 67-9, 217 in the air.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, the guy's an all-time fighter,
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_00: and he – He must have spun away from three or four sacks.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_00: The guy is so gutty.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_00: And he still gets sacked six times.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_00: It could have been 10, Tyler.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_00: Man, he's got a lot of guts.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_00: All right, so Redmond, their best guy in the front, he didn't have a big day.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_00: He had one batted ball and 56 snaps.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_00: Rodriguez, who only played 28, half as much,
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_00: He was getting after Cody Mock, the good right guard.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_00: He had a flush against him.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_00: He got a holding penalty on Mock with an explosive getoff.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: Barton's a really good center.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_00: He got a holding penalty on him on a rush, and he got a flush on Barton.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_00: Rodriguez really played well in this game.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: So the rookies, they play together.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_00: Dominique Orange, only 13.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_01: Big centers.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: 12.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_00: They were not factors in this game.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_00: And then Ingram Dawkins played 51.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_00: And he's a hold the fort guy.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, now the backers.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_00: Well, outside.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Van Ginkle.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_00: He had one knockdown.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_00: Turner.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_00: A flush.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_00: A face mask.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_00: He got a face mask penalty.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_00: He played 63 out of.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_00: I think he sat four snaps, Tyler.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_00: And one of those four was a 40-yard touchdown pass to Ted Hurst, the rookie.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_00: They've got to have him on the field.
- 1:27:11SPEAKER_00: He takes one of four snaps, a touchdown.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_00: Gadecki,
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_00: the kid from Wisconsin,
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_00: rural Wisconsin, down by, what is it, Reidsville or Brilliant down that way.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_00: The old Olympian conference that I covered in the mid to late seventies at
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_00: the Green Bay Press Gazette.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_00: And to get that in, he did well against Turner.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_00: He really did.
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_00: And over on the other side, the left tackle worse is one of the best in the business.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_00: Wilson or Turner did not dominate this game.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_00: The other outside guy, the backup, the guy they picked up very shrewdly was Kyle Vannoy.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_00: Now, Vannoy just got moved.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_00: He's been a standard elevation here off the practice squad for the first three games.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_00: And now today they activated him.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_00: So now he's on the 53.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_00: Let's look at Vannoy, Tyler.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_00: Second round pick of the Lions in 2014.
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_00: I forgot he was a Lion.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_00: I don't have any memory of that.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_00: He's big, 6'3", 245.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_00: He ran great back then, 4'6", 6".
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_00: Wunderlich, not so good.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_00: He took it twice, 13 and 16.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_00: But the scouts, I remember, they said he was football smart.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_00: Arms, not good, 31 and 5'8".
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_00: But this guy is just a football player.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_00: And in this game, 17 snaps.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_00: He drove inside against Mock and got a sack in 3.3.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: He got a hurry on a spin move against Werff, unblocked.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_00: He goes in, he gets a tackle for loss.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_00: And then he beats Gedeke off the ball, running play minus four.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_00: He's a hell of a pickup.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, they had Batty and Chambliss and Richter, all these guys who are non-factors.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's given them a third guy like the loss of Grenard was.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_00: And the loss of D.J.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_00: Wanham two years before that, Kyle Van Hoy is a hell of a pickup for this defense.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_00: And Flores knows the guy.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_00: It's really big.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_00: All right, we covered Turner.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to Eric Wilson at the backers.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_00: Well, he had a hell of a game, Tyler.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_00: This guy, they paid him.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_00: They were so smart to pay this veteran.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_00: Third and two, they run a scene to Otten, man coverage.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_00: He beat them.
- 1:29:50SPEAKER_00: Great throw, great catch.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_00: Gain of 37.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_00: They blitzed and he beat Wilson by half a step.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_00: He batted a ball.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_00: He dropped into the throwing lane, batted the thing, you know, the way they sometimes bail out.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_00: He got in the throwing lane.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_00: He got a sack against the running back.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_00: He just struck a blow against the back.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_00: I can't remember who it was.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_00: Minus three on a running play, alluded Gedeke.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_00: He just crawls in on a knockdown.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_00: He's crawling and fighting.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_00: He had to run stuff on a gain of one.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_00: He got a holding penalty on the tight end, Durham.
- 1:30:29SPEAKER_00: And he had a knockdown against the running back, Irving.
- 1:30:34SPEAKER_00: He was their MVP, I think, in this game.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_00: He was awesome.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_00: Cashman.
- 1:30:41SPEAKER_00: Dominique Orange takes up two blockers.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_00: Capsman goes right behind him, makes a good solo stick.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_00: Unblock, stunt, knockdown, flush on third and two, hits the A-gap, untouched.
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_00: He runs cross blitzes with either Pace or Wilson, and it's a very deadly thing.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_00: They don't do it that much.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_00: That's the old 3-4 Hank Bulla thing.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_00: The backers in the A-gap and they cross before they go, man, it's hard to handle sometimes.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_00: He had a sack in the A-gap on that cross blitz, 2.5 seconds.
- 1:31:15SPEAKER_00: He had another knockdown.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_00: And Pace, he only plays 16 snaps, you know, but he had a flush against Otten and he had a sack.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_00: He ran right through Otten.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_00: Otten was in as a fullback, 2.3 seconds.
- 1:31:34SPEAKER_00: The secondary, Metellus has been kind of quiet early.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_00: He played all 69.
- 1:31:42SPEAKER_00: He's kind of an intimidator,
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_00: and it's hard to be an intimidator in this stage of the game with all the penalties.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_00: But he had a great breakup to McMillan on the first third down.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_00: I think that knocked McMillan out of the game.
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_00: He was in the box a lot.
- 1:31:59SPEAKER_00: He had an unnecessary roughness.
- 1:32:01SPEAKER_00: He's really a good player.
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_00: They've been healthy on defense.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_00: That's so crucial.
- 1:32:06SPEAKER_00: Harrison Smith, he only playing half the time, 31 snaps.
- 1:32:10SPEAKER_00: He comes up to the line of scrimmage and he will blitz or he will bail.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_00: He's really the key.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_00: I think he's making calls up there and he is an important factor when he can do both, man.
- 1:32:23SPEAKER_00: He can be effective.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_00: Rodgers playing good football.
- 1:32:28SPEAKER_00: He's not really getting beat.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_00: He's a good corner.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_00: He's small, but he's physical and he's good.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_00: Murphy was not challenged once in this game.
- 1:32:36SPEAKER_00: That's how good he is.
- 1:32:38SPEAKER_00: You know, he's the best corner in the division and he's playing good football.
- 1:32:42SPEAKER_00: Pierre was fine.
- 1:32:44SPEAKER_00: Reichardt, he's made 26 in a row now, Tyler.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_00: He hit from 54, 56, and 43.
- 1:32:53SPEAKER_00: Extra point, there was a penalty.
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_00: Hits from 48 on the extra point.
- 1:32:59SPEAKER_00: Hecker, eight punts.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_00: He was in for the injury.
- 1:33:01SPEAKER_00: Rookie Thorson, 46-5, 41-5, 4.48 hang time.
- 1:33:08SPEAKER_00: They didn't like it, and they cut him today.
- 1:33:11SPEAKER_00: Price, a confident second-year guy.
- 1:33:15SPEAKER_00: 86-yard punt return.
- 1:33:16SPEAKER_00: The ball was only hang time, only 4-3-8.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_00: Outkicked his coverage a little bit.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_00: Dixon did.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_00: Whew.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_00: 86 yards.
- 1:33:27SPEAKER_00: He is so confident.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_00: When there's bouncing short punts, he's clearing out traffic.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_00: It looks like he's been in the, Brian Mitchell, like in his 10th year or something.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_00: He just takes charge.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_00: This Price guy is an interesting cat.
- 1:33:41SPEAKER_00: And he's a good return guy, does both.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_00: That's it for the bikes.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_01: So we did a feature on Eric Wilson.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_01: For those who missed it, it's in the archives at Golong.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_01: Wanted to just share...
- 1:33:55SPEAKER_01: A few quotes because now we can see the violence on our screen in light of his wisdom.
- 1:34:02SPEAKER_01: Really fascinating conversation and very introspective, curious soul, as Blake Cashman put him.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_01: So here's Eric Wilson.
- 1:34:11SPEAKER_01: And I just love this.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_01: Philosophically, how Brian Flores and the Vikings approach defensive football.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_01: It's different than I think most coordinators, most teams think about defense.
- 1:34:24SPEAKER_01: Eric Wilson here, quote,
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_01: some people may think of defense as defending the field,
- 1:34:29SPEAKER_01: but really you're attacking the ball.
- 1:34:31SPEAKER_01: The whole game, you're attacking the ball.
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_01: You're the aggressor.
- 1:34:35SPEAKER_01: The offense has to defend the ball.
- 1:34:37SPEAKER_01: They're technically attacking the field to score, but we're attacking the ball.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_01: Every play, they have to defend.
- 1:34:46SPEAKER_01: Everyone who has the ball, what are they doing?
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_01: They're trying to technically score, but they have to defend the ball every single play.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_01: We're in attack mode.
- 1:34:56SPEAKER_01: I thought that was interesting.
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_01: Never really thought of it that way.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_01: You think defense,
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_01: you're defending,
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_01: you're trying to prevent something from happening, that being a touchdown.
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_01: And the way Flores calls a defense with either Wilson or Cashman, they're going.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_01: Harris is coming down to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:35:13SPEAKER_01: He's either going or bailing, like you said, Bob.
- 1:35:16SPEAKER_01: So many moving parts,
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_01: and they're constantly ingraining into their heads to punch at the ball,
- 1:35:23SPEAKER_01: strip it loose, do whatever you can to just create havoc.
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_01: Let me find some more Eric Wilson.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_01: He does enjoy playing one of the teams that let him exit the building,
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_01: be it Green Bay or anybody, quote, mother F somebody just because.
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_01: I remember we were playing Green Bay and that happened.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_01: You use that as fuel when you're playing those specific teams.
- 1:35:49SPEAKER_01: But when you're out there, man,
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_01: you realize it's an honor and a privilege to be here,
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_01: man, and take every single snap.
- 1:35:55SPEAKER_01: Like it's an absolute blessing.
- 1:35:56SPEAKER_01: That's my mentality.
- 1:35:58SPEAKER_01: A lot of interesting stuff.
- 1:36:00SPEAKER_01: But I like that point that he made, Bob, on attacking the ball.
- 1:36:03SPEAKER_01: And you can see that watching a Vikings game.
- 1:36:06SPEAKER_01: They swarm.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_01: It's different there.
- 1:36:09SPEAKER_01: And it starts during the week.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_01: This is...
- 1:36:14SPEAKER_01: It's an interesting dynamic.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_01: Kevin O'Connell, an offensive guy, obviously.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_01: Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_01: Two very different coaching styles.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_01: Two different temperaments.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_01: Offenses, they're working through it.
- 1:36:28SPEAKER_01: Strange press conference, in my opinion.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_01: They traded J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants.
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_01: It didn't work out.
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_01: Look, he drafted him 10th overall.
- 1:36:38SPEAKER_01: And he was your third stringer this year for a reason.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_01: We had all the reporting at And our Kyler Murray series and what went wrong behind the scenes.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_01: How he wasn't necessarily the most coachable quarterback.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_01: And it just was kind of a weird, somber press conference from Kevin O'Connell.
- 1:36:57SPEAKER_01: I thought he's trying to be nice.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_01: He's trying not to kick the guy's ass on the way out.
- 1:37:02SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 1:37:03SPEAKER_01: But it was very over the top.
- 1:37:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a cutthroat league and he didn't perform.
- 1:37:09SPEAKER_01: End of story.
- 1:37:10SPEAKER_01: They kind of let that quarterback competition drag on longer than they should have.
- 1:37:15SPEAKER_01: It cost Murray reps.
- 1:37:16SPEAKER_01: It cost Wentz reps as a number two that went into mid-August.
- 1:37:20SPEAKER_01: So it was time.
- 1:37:22SPEAKER_01: It was a mistake.
- 1:37:25SPEAKER_01: And listeners, they listened to Bob breakdown those Sam Darnold performances one by one in 2024.
- 1:37:33SPEAKER_01: There's pressure on O'Connell.
- 1:37:35SPEAKER_01: There's pressure on Murray to get something going on offensively.
- 1:37:42SPEAKER_01: Full complement of weapons, we'll see.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Murray's the mystery to me.
- 1:37:49SPEAKER_00: Now, you've seen him more, and you've written about him now, and you know a lot about him.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_00: I really don't, and so I'm just really eager to watch his season progress.
- 1:38:02SPEAKER_01: Same.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_01: All right, we've got one more.
- 1:38:06SPEAKER_01: Lions, Jets, Lions, avoid...
- 1:38:10SPEAKER_01: Disaster.
- 1:38:11SPEAKER_01: Geno and the Jets mounted a little bit of a mini rally here, but Detroit hangs on.
- 1:38:19SPEAKER_00: Geno had a really good game.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_00: Detroit right now, where is this guy?
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_00: Jared Goff is second in the league and passed a rating 116.1 behind Brock Purdy.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, eight touchdowns, no picks.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_00: He's playing great and he wasn't really under much pressure.
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_00: His whole line played well.
- 1:38:43SPEAKER_00: Gibbs is the man.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_00: He's so accurate.
- 1:38:45SPEAKER_00: You just got to kind of appreciate the guy,
- 1:38:47SPEAKER_00: you know, uh, golf is really something that I say Gibbs, I meant golf.
- 1:38:52SPEAKER_01: Um, they're both pretty damn good.
- 1:38:54SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 1:38:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:38:56SPEAKER_00: Um, Jamo Williams was interesting.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_00: You know, the first play they run a speed out with him against Love.
- 1:39:09SPEAKER_00: I can't read my writing.
- 1:39:10SPEAKER_00: Gain of 14.
- 1:39:11SPEAKER_00: Nice play.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_00: His footwork is really good on speed outs.
- 1:39:15SPEAKER_00: He's run these things several times now.
- 1:39:17SPEAKER_00: Most of his catches have been on that route.
- 1:39:20SPEAKER_00: I give him credit, man.
- 1:39:21SPEAKER_00: He comes in and he'll crack anybody.
- 1:39:24SPEAKER_00: Some big safety.
- 1:39:25SPEAKER_00: He'll crack a backer.
- 1:39:27SPEAKER_00: He just goes in there and really tries to hit people.
- 1:39:30SPEAKER_00: He climbed up to spear a deep out for 21.
- 1:39:34SPEAKER_00: Guy can really jump, man.
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_00: And then he goes in, he caught a ball for nine, got his helmet knocked off.
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_00: He got dinged, jumps up and flexes his biceps.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_01: The guy's crazy, but...
- 1:39:48SPEAKER_00: He is a talent.
- 1:39:51SPEAKER_00: St. Brown, they didn't really need him.
- 1:39:54SPEAKER_00: He had one drop.
- 1:39:55SPEAKER_00: He's fine.
- 1:39:55SPEAKER_00: Tesla finally made a big play, 49-yarder.
- 1:39:58SPEAKER_00: He was wide open.
- 1:39:59SPEAKER_00: They ignored him.
- 1:40:01SPEAKER_00: There's just a lot of weapons running around.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_00: Laporta, you know, he's a control receiver.
- 1:40:08SPEAKER_00: He's quarterback friendly.
- 1:40:10SPEAKER_00: Goff loves him inside.
- 1:40:11SPEAKER_00: He's good, man.
- 1:40:12SPEAKER_00: Blocker, he's small, willing, and scrappy.
- 1:40:15SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's real good as a blocker this season.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_00: Been kind of disappointing.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_00: He had a couple of misses in this game.
- 1:40:25SPEAKER_00: Brock writes the blocker.
- 1:40:28SPEAKER_00: Meeks is the converted wide out who might be able to do some damage.
- 1:40:35SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the offensive line.
- 1:40:39SPEAKER_00: It was better here.
- 1:40:40SPEAKER_00: They had all their starters.
- 1:40:42SPEAKER_00: No, they don't have the center maze back.
- 1:40:46SPEAKER_00: He should be back after the bye maybe in about a month for perhaps the Green Bay game.
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_00: So it's Sewell, Mahogany, Scruggs, Rattledge, and Miller.
- 1:40:56SPEAKER_01: Played well.
- 1:40:57SPEAKER_00: Now, you know,
- 1:40:57SPEAKER_00: you don't have – you got a couple good pass rushes for the Jets outside,
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_00: young guys, and you got Enigbari, the ex-packer.
- 1:41:06SPEAKER_00: But very manageable pressure on Goff.
- 1:41:10SPEAKER_00: Really good games by – Sewell was really good.
- 1:41:17SPEAKER_00: Mahogany, good.
- 1:41:19SPEAKER_00: One pressure.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_00: That was his first start at left guard.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he came back, started a couple games at the end of last season.
- 1:41:26SPEAKER_00: But that was very encouraging for them.
- 1:41:29SPEAKER_00: The center, Scruggs, is playing pretty good football.
- 1:41:32SPEAKER_00: Two pressures, one bad run.
- 1:41:34SPEAKER_00: He's up against that massive nose tackle, Tavondre Sweat of the Jets, formerly the Titan.
- 1:41:42SPEAKER_00: Held up pretty well.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, Scrubs has been kind of a pleasant surprise at center.
- 1:41:47SPEAKER_00: When Mays returns, Scrubs could compete with Mahogany at left guard.
- 1:41:54SPEAKER_00: Ratledge, he's becoming a real good player, Tyler.
- 1:41:57SPEAKER_00: I got him for one pressure.
- 1:42:02SPEAKER_00: He will crush people in the run game.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_00: He's really coming on.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_00: He could be a real good guard in this league.
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_00: And then Miller, the rookie right tackle, he was back.
- 1:42:15SPEAKER_00: Two pressures.
- 1:42:17SPEAKER_00: He has problems sustaining blocks.
- 1:42:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's a young guy.
- 1:42:21SPEAKER_00: He's got to learn.
- 1:42:22SPEAKER_00: He had a false start penalty.
- 1:42:24SPEAKER_00: Good player.
- 1:42:24SPEAKER_00: Larry Boren, the sixth off lineman, sixth old lineman.
- 1:42:28SPEAKER_00: He doesn't sustain real well.
- 1:42:31SPEAKER_00: Goff, just accurate as hell.
- 1:42:35SPEAKER_00: Fourth and two, made a great throw against the Blitz, gain a five to Tesla.
- 1:42:41SPEAKER_00: And when the score was 24-24, he bought time and hit the wide open Tesla on an overrode for 49.
- 1:42:48SPEAKER_00: And that led to the winning touchdown.
- 1:42:51SPEAKER_00: Running backs, boy, you got to appreciate Gibbs because he had 27 touches, Tyler.
- 1:42:59SPEAKER_00: He can't really keep this up, can he?
- 1:43:02SPEAKER_00: Appreciate him for what we're seeing now.
- 1:43:06SPEAKER_00: 164 all-purpose yards, three touchdowns.
- 1:43:09SPEAKER_00: He had a drop on the flat.
- 1:43:11SPEAKER_00: He gave up a sack to Cisco on a safety blitz.
- 1:43:14SPEAKER_00: He gave up a sack to Davis.
- 1:43:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, God, Demario Davis, the inside backer, just overpowered him.
- 1:43:23SPEAKER_00: That's two sacks.
- 1:43:26SPEAKER_00: Goes out as a wide receiver, pauses, comebacks inside, gains 12 on a delay.
- 1:43:32SPEAKER_00: He's an A-gap runner, man.
- 1:43:34SPEAKER_00: He can do that all day long.
- 1:43:36SPEAKER_00: He's tougher than nails.
- 1:43:38SPEAKER_00: He missed a block on a wide receiver screen to St. Brown, tackle for loss.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_00: He had a gutty blitz pickup against Sherwood, the inside backer, on fourth and two.
- 1:43:51SPEAKER_00: They got the first down.
- 1:43:54SPEAKER_00: 17-yard touchdown.
- 1:43:55SPEAKER_00: He's got a sweep to right end, reverses his field, goes to the left side, highlights stuff.
- 1:44:01SPEAKER_00: Took a tough hit from Belton.
- 1:44:03SPEAKER_00: The safety bounces right up.
- 1:44:08SPEAKER_00: Brock Wright misses Bailey at the point of attack.
- 1:44:12SPEAKER_00: Gibbs turns minus four into plus five and then touchdown in the flat on
- 1:44:17SPEAKER_00: an easy route and they blew the coverage.
- 1:44:20SPEAKER_00: The interesting part now was Vackey coming in as the second back.
- 1:44:25SPEAKER_00: He got 20 snaps.
- 1:44:26SPEAKER_00: Now they need another back, obviously, with Montgomery gone.
- 1:44:34SPEAKER_00: He KO'd Demario Davis on a blitz.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_00: That was impressive.
- 1:44:40SPEAKER_00: He gave up a knockdown when he missed Sherwood on a blitz.
- 1:44:44SPEAKER_00: He had another fine blitz pickup on a cat blitz by a corner.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_00: 11 yard on a check down.
- 1:44:50SPEAKER_00: Looked pretty good running the route.
- 1:44:52SPEAKER_00: He's kind of straight line running back, but he's got a lot of ability.
- 1:44:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe he's got something.
- 1:44:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:44:59SPEAKER_00: That's it on the offense.
- 1:45:00SPEAKER_00: They are a They're a potent crew.
- 1:45:02SPEAKER_00: They've scored, what, 31 three times.
- 1:45:05SPEAKER_00: They're going to have to score a lot of points.
- 1:45:10SPEAKER_00: And now on the defense, Ty, any thoughts on the O?
- 1:45:15SPEAKER_01: No, that's fine.
- 1:45:19SPEAKER_01: Well said.
- 1:45:20SPEAKER_01: They've got to score.
- 1:45:21SPEAKER_01: Same story as Jim Modis put in his column today.
- 1:45:26SPEAKER_01: I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about this defense.
- 1:45:31SPEAKER_00: Hutchinson,
- 1:45:32SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:45:32SPEAKER_00: he was up against those two really good tackles that Van S ate up the week before.
- 1:45:39SPEAKER_00: He didn't have a great game.
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_00: Again, he's wearing people down.
- 1:45:43SPEAKER_00: That's when he got his half sack against Fashanu, the former number one pick.
- 1:45:47SPEAKER_00: He wears people out.
- 1:45:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, he had about three other hurries.
- 1:45:55SPEAKER_00: He's a great player.
- 1:45:59SPEAKER_00: You know, he's playing 64 out of 66 snaps.
- 1:46:04SPEAKER_00: They don't want to do that,
- 1:46:05SPEAKER_00: but unless Derek Moore,
- 1:46:09SPEAKER_00: the second round pick, comes on, he's going to have to do it.
- 1:46:13SPEAKER_00: All right, the bright spot was DJ Wanham, the ex-Carolina and Minnesota edge.
- 1:46:19SPEAKER_00: He had a sack in 4.2.
- 1:46:23SPEAKER_00: He bent underneath Fashano.
- 1:46:26SPEAKER_00: But that was 2.6.
- 1:46:27SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 1:46:28SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry against Parham and a sack against Fashanu in 2.8.
- 1:46:32SPEAKER_00: You know, Wanham is a hard-charging guy.
- 1:46:35SPEAKER_00: He played 44 snaps.
- 1:46:37SPEAKER_00: They need him in the worst way.
- 1:46:40SPEAKER_00: All right, Moore, the Michigan second-round pick.
- 1:46:44SPEAKER_00: They're only playing him nine snaps.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_00: Now, he's feeling his way.
- 1:46:50SPEAKER_00: He plays inside now on third and long.
- 1:46:54SPEAKER_00: Sometimes he stands up.
- 1:46:59SPEAKER_00: He missed Brees Hall in the backfield one time.
- 1:47:04SPEAKER_00: Had a chance for a tackle for loss.
- 1:47:07SPEAKER_00: He's got to come through.
- 1:47:08SPEAKER_00: Right now, I have no idea what he's got.
- 1:47:13SPEAKER_00: And the fourth outside guy, Lacey started.
- 1:47:15SPEAKER_00: He's their big end, kind of.
- 1:47:18SPEAKER_00: And he played 19 snaps.
- 1:47:20SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:47:24SPEAKER_00: Still haven't seen Hassanine, the guy who tore it up in the exhibition season.
- 1:47:28SPEAKER_00: He's the second-year player who has some pass rush.
- 1:47:31SPEAKER_00: Now, inside, Tylek Williams, the second-round player, 30 snaps.
- 1:47:36SPEAKER_00: He's thick.
- 1:47:37SPEAKER_00: He's square.
- 1:47:38SPEAKER_00: They've got to have him.
- 1:47:40SPEAKER_00: Zero tackles.
- 1:47:41SPEAKER_00: He got shut out.
- 1:47:42SPEAKER_00: Now, that doesn't mean that much, but he's going to have to start making some plays.
- 1:47:46SPEAKER_00: McNeil, he got a sack against – Myers, the ex-Packer center, power one-on-one move, great rush.
- 1:47:56SPEAKER_00: He had a knockdown on the next play.
- 1:47:57SPEAKER_00: He bull rushed the left guard, 2.8 on a TT stunt.
- 1:48:04SPEAKER_00: He's healthy.
- 1:48:05SPEAKER_00: He's playing well.
- 1:48:07SPEAKER_00: Gil Howard could be the key to their pass rush, man.
- 1:48:10SPEAKER_00: This is the young sixth-round pick.
- 1:48:14SPEAKER_00: Played 33 snaps.
- 1:48:16SPEAKER_00: He's really a fluid, fast runner when you see him chasing.
- 1:48:19SPEAKER_00: He got half a sack against the guard, Tipman.
- 1:48:23SPEAKER_00: He does get battered in the running game,
- 1:48:25SPEAKER_00: but at times he will spring off blocks and get back into the play.
- 1:48:30SPEAKER_00: But he's small.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_00: He's like 290, 285 and run defense.
- 1:48:35SPEAKER_00: They're going to exploit him.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_00: On Wazirki, 11 snaps.
- 1:48:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:48:41SPEAKER_00: They're still hanging with the guy.
- 1:48:43SPEAKER_00: They've hung with him a long time.
- 1:48:46SPEAKER_00: All right, linebacker.
- 1:48:48SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 1:48:49SPEAKER_00: Nowoski has been around for about four years.
- 1:48:52SPEAKER_00: Trevor Nowoski played 33 snaps and he had a hell of a game, Tyler.
- 1:48:57SPEAKER_00: He played a lot.
- 1:48:58SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry, ran over Brees Hall in a blitz.
- 1:49:02SPEAKER_00: He stopped the naked pitch for a gain of one.
- 1:49:06SPEAKER_00: That's when he knocked Brees Hall out of the game with a thigh injury.
- 1:49:09SPEAKER_01: He did a lot of good things and he's going
- 1:49:10SPEAKER_01: to play more
- 1:49:12SPEAKER_00: I thought Jack Campbell played every snap as always.
- 1:49:16SPEAKER_00: I cannot afford to lose him.
- 1:49:19SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:49:21SPEAKER_00: Rodriguez, well, Devin White, the ex-Buccaneer, he had been starting the first two games.
- 1:49:28SPEAKER_00: This game he was inactive.
- 1:49:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, I call him a punching bag last week.
- 1:49:36SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 1:49:38SPEAKER_00: So they played,
- 1:49:40SPEAKER_00: well Barnes of course starts, and Barnes is good, we know him, he's a physical guy.
- 1:49:45SPEAKER_00: Rodriguez had 19 snaps, he's okay.
- 1:49:52SPEAKER_00: Their hope with the position is Jimmy Rolder,
- 1:49:55SPEAKER_00: a fourth-round pick, was off the injury list, played on special teams.
- 1:50:00SPEAKER_00: Don't be surprised if we start seeing this guy.
- 1:50:03SPEAKER_00: I saw him at Michigan, of course, and he's a very instinctive player.
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_00: Really only was a big contributor for one year, but he's got a lot of tools, a lot of instincts.
- 1:50:14SPEAKER_00: All right, secondary major changes.
- 1:50:16SPEAKER_00: They benched.
- 1:50:18SPEAKER_00: Rock Yasin after two really rough games.
- 1:50:21SPEAKER_00: He only played 13 snaps.
- 1:50:24SPEAKER_00: So at corner, they got DJ Reed and he gave some and got some in this game.
- 1:50:31SPEAKER_00: He's vulnerable.
- 1:50:33SPEAKER_00: We know that.
- 1:50:34SPEAKER_00: They started Roger McCrary, the ex second round pick from Tennessee.
- 1:50:41SPEAKER_00: He gave up a touchdown pass to Sadiq, the ultra talented tight end, the rookie.
- 1:50:50SPEAKER_00: He's okay.
- 1:50:53SPEAKER_00: Rakestraw, Enos Rakestraw has been injured for two years.
- 1:50:57SPEAKER_00: He's a second round pick.
- 1:50:58SPEAKER_00: They got to get it out of this guy.
- 1:51:01SPEAKER_00: They played him 23 snaps and he had a nice breakup to Garrett Wilson
- 1:51:05SPEAKER_00: who otherwise ate him up for 10 for 107.
- 1:51:08SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:51:16SPEAKER_00: Now it's safety.
- 1:51:17SPEAKER_00: You know, they, their top three are gone and the fifth one is gone.
- 1:51:22SPEAKER_00: So they're starting Chuck Clark.
- 1:51:24SPEAKER_00: We know that he plays every snap and they started Christian Isian, the ex Rutgers guy.
- 1:51:32SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:51:33SPEAKER_00: Clark was great.
- 1:51:34SPEAKER_00: And he made the play of the game really when the defensive coordinator,
- 1:51:39SPEAKER_00: Kelvin Shepard sent him on a, a blitz.
- 1:51:43SPEAKER_00: He timed it perfectly.
- 1:51:45SPEAKER_00: He sacked, uh, Geno in 2.0.
- 1:51:51SPEAKER_00: Running back Allen from Wisconsin never saw the thing.
- 1:51:54SPEAKER_00: It was a great play.
- 1:51:55SPEAKER_00: He has marginal range.
- 1:51:59SPEAKER_00: He will hammer you.
- 1:52:02SPEAKER_00: I just don't know.
- 1:52:02SPEAKER_00: And now Izzy was the bright spot.
- 1:52:07SPEAKER_00: You could see it at Rutgers.
- 1:52:08SPEAKER_00: This guy's got a massive motor and he's got a big heart and he will hit you.
- 1:52:15SPEAKER_00: He had a bunch, several tackles for loss, like three of them.
- 1:52:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he got beat by Sadiq once and he was out of position on,
- 1:52:23SPEAKER_00: looked like on that play action pass to Sadiq for 43.
- 1:52:28SPEAKER_00: But again, he is a tenacious, rugged tackler.
- 1:52:32SPEAKER_00: They got to have him and he's got to stay healthy.
- 1:52:36SPEAKER_00: You know, Avante Maddox now is out for the year.
- 1:52:39SPEAKER_00: He was their third branch and Kirby Joseph, no idea if they're coming back.
- 1:52:46SPEAKER_00: Bates, kickoffs, three out of six were good.
- 1:52:49SPEAKER_00: Fox punted okay.
- 1:52:51SPEAKER_00: Kennedys and Sailors are decent kick return guys.
- 1:52:57SPEAKER_00: And that's it for the Lions, Tyler.
- 1:53:04SPEAKER_01: One quick note on Skylar Gilhauer, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin native.
- 1:53:07SPEAKER_01: I remember reading this story at some point.
- 1:53:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he would work overnight and morning shifts at a FedEx in Milwaukee to help pay
- 1:53:19SPEAKER_01: for his college tuition once upon a time.
- 1:53:23SPEAKER_01: Might have to chat with Skylar at some point if he's standing out to you on the film.
- 1:53:30SPEAKER_01: They need one of these players to emerge.
- 1:53:36SPEAKER_01: We shall see.
- 1:53:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's jump right to the McGinn memory.
- 1:53:39SPEAKER_01: What do you got for us?
- 1:53:40SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 1:53:40SPEAKER_00: So last week we finished up the 81 finale when the Packers got blown out
- 1:53:45SPEAKER_00: at Shea Stadium by the Jets.
- 1:53:47SPEAKER_00: They lost a playoff berth with that loss in 81, and that ended their season at 8-8.
- 1:53:56SPEAKER_00: So then the question became, will they give Bart Starr, will they bring him back?
- 1:54:02SPEAKER_00: His record, 39-65-2.
- 1:54:06SPEAKER_00: The only coach where the worst record than that after seven years,
- 1:54:11SPEAKER_00: now this is at the time, was Tom Landry of the expansion Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:54:17SPEAKER_00: Tom was 35-56-5, winning percentage of 3-9-1, a little better than Bart's.
- 1:54:27SPEAKER_00: In fact,
- 1:54:28SPEAKER_00: no coach in NFL history had a worse record than Starr after seven years
- 1:54:34SPEAKER_00: and been given time.
- 1:54:36SPEAKER_00: So the debate raged.
- 1:54:38SPEAKER_00: Do we bring them back or do we fire Bart Starr?
- 1:54:42SPEAKER_00: Seven years at 3-7-7 winning percentage.
- 1:54:46SPEAKER_00: And I remember this like it was yesterday.
- 1:54:49SPEAKER_00: It was really an emotional time, you know.
- 1:54:52SPEAKER_00: My friends,
- 1:54:53SPEAKER_00: I was playing rec basketball and in the bar afterwards,
- 1:54:56SPEAKER_00: everybody had an opinion on Bart.
- 1:54:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was...
- 1:55:00SPEAKER_00: The hero, the greatest of the great, he had come back to save the franchise as coach and GM.
- 1:55:07SPEAKER_00: He had been stripped of his GM duties after his sixth year.
- 1:55:12SPEAKER_00: And now after his seventh year, what do they do?
- 1:55:17SPEAKER_00: Right away,
- 1:55:17SPEAKER_00: Judge Robert Perrins,
- 1:55:19SPEAKER_00: who was the chief executive officer and had taken on a lot
- 1:55:22SPEAKER_00: of Dominic Olenicek's duties.
- 1:55:25SPEAKER_00: He was the president, but he was in ill health.
- 1:55:28SPEAKER_00: Perrins said,
- 1:55:31SPEAKER_00: The 44-man board will meet,
- 1:55:33SPEAKER_00: and then they allow the seven-man executive committee to make the decision.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_00: Cherry Star was interviewed by Mike Christopoulos of the Milwaukee Sentinel.
- 1:55:46SPEAKER_00: And Cherry, a couple days after, Cherry said it didn't look promising for her husband.
- 1:55:54SPEAKER_00: It doesn't look promising, and that's very disappointing.
- 1:55:58SPEAKER_00: He's the best thing that's ever happened to the green bed packers.
- 1:56:01SPEAKER_00: And please quote me on that.
- 1:56:04SPEAKER_00: Cherry was standing for her man.
- 1:56:06SPEAKER_00: A lot of the newspapers are taking terrible shots at him and doing everything
- 1:56:11SPEAKER_00: in their power to undermine Bart.
- 1:56:14SPEAKER_00: We do feel the pain, the hurt, and the humiliation.
- 1:56:18SPEAKER_00: So anyway, three or four days after that, the executive committee met.
- 1:56:23SPEAKER_00: They're consisted of Dominic Olenicek, age 73, President.
- 1:56:29SPEAKER_00: Robert Perrins, Vice President, 63.
- 1:56:33SPEAKER_00: John Tarinas, Secretary, 68.
- 1:56:36SPEAKER_00: John Stiles, Treasurer, 68.
- 1:56:40SPEAKER_00: Tony Cannadale, the great player, running back, 62.
- 1:56:45SPEAKER_00: Jerry Atkinson, 74.
- 1:56:48SPEAKER_00: And John Favre, the young one of the bunch, 42.
- 1:56:53SPEAKER_00: Four of these members had been on the committee since Lombardi was hired in 58.
- 1:56:58SPEAKER_00: So they had that unbelievable decision to hire Lombardi the Giants assistant.
- 1:57:04SPEAKER_00: But then it blew up in their face when they gave the job to Phil Bengston
- 1:57:08SPEAKER_00: after Lombardi left for the Redskins.
- 1:57:11SPEAKER_00: They had a chance to hire Don Shula after Bengston's second year.
- 1:57:16SPEAKER_00: Shula was looking for work because he was out in Baltimore.
- 1:57:19SPEAKER_00: He got the job at Miami.
- 1:57:22SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:57:24SPEAKER_00: They hired Dan Devine, which was a horrible mistake, and they hired Star.
- 1:57:31SPEAKER_00: That was those four guys' track record, Ole, Torinas, Cannadale, and Atkinson.
- 1:57:38SPEAKER_00: Torinas could not attend this executive committee meeting.
- 1:57:43SPEAKER_00: He was ill health, but he was kept abreast of it from his hospital room.
- 1:57:48SPEAKER_00: Bart was 47th.
- 1:57:53SPEAKER_00: All right, so what do they do?
- 1:57:56SPEAKER_00: Everybody had an opinion, you know?
- 1:57:59SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, they gave him an extension and brought him back.
- 1:58:04SPEAKER_00: They gave him a two, extended him by one year, the third extension of his career.
- 1:58:11SPEAKER_00: And there it was.
- 1:58:15SPEAKER_00: The only four coaches Who had been with the present team longer than Bart at
- 1:58:21SPEAKER_00: that time was Tom Landry,
- 1:58:23SPEAKER_00: 21 years, Bud Grant, 15, Chuck Knoll, 13, and Don Shula, 12, all Hall of Famers.
- 1:58:36SPEAKER_00: Before his sixth and seventh season, Bart said he needed a winning record to retain his job.
- 1:58:45SPEAKER_00: He went 5-10-1, followed by 8-8.
- 1:58:50SPEAKER_00: Anyway, the executive committee, according to
- 1:58:52SPEAKER_01: Robert... 5-3-1, right?
- 1:58:54SPEAKER_00: 5-3-1.
- 1:58:55SPEAKER_00: What did
- 1:58:57SPEAKER_01: I say?
- 1:58:57SPEAKER_01: 5-10-1.
- 1:58:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:58:58SPEAKER_00: That was the strike year in 82.
- 1:59:00SPEAKER_00: The strike year.
- 1:59:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, no.
- 1:59:02SPEAKER_00: The previous two years, Tyler.
- 1:59:06SPEAKER_00: When he said... Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:59:08SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 1:59:09SPEAKER_01: You're looking at 1980 and 1981.
- 1:59:11SPEAKER_01: I'm jumping ahead two years after this decision.
- 1:59:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:59:16SPEAKER_00: So he didn't get the job done.
- 1:59:17SPEAKER_00: He would not comment this time about what he needed the next time to hold his job.
- 1:59:26SPEAKER_00: So anyway, it was a big one, Tyler.
- 1:59:31SPEAKER_00: Bart said at the press conference,
- 1:59:33SPEAKER_00: after Perrins had a press conference announcing it,
- 1:59:36SPEAKER_00: I believe this is the sensible approach, said Starr.
- 1:59:42SPEAKER_00: I think it was a great move and formed a solid foundation on which to build.
- 1:59:49SPEAKER_00: A couple other comments here.
- 1:59:54SPEAKER_00: Perrins admitted that discord existed within the community on
- 1:59:59SPEAKER_00: whether Starr should be given more time.
- 2:00:03SPEAKER_00: And he did not ignore Starr's failures as coach.
- 2:00:08SPEAKER_00: In a big statement,
- 2:00:10SPEAKER_00: The copy of his entire speech,
- 2:00:14SPEAKER_00: Perrin's speech, we ran in the Press Gazette, and I can't find it, Tyler.
- 2:00:23SPEAKER_00: Darn it.
- 2:00:26SPEAKER_00: It is somewhere, but I don't have it.
- 2:00:28SPEAKER_00: And basically he said,
- 2:00:33SPEAKER_00: he admitted the pressure was on,
- 2:00:36SPEAKER_00: and why they retain Starr,
- 2:00:40SPEAKER_00: Because of that 6-2 finish after a 2-6 start, which made it 8-8 in
- 2:00:49SPEAKER_00: 81.
- 2:00:51SPEAKER_00: So how did Bart do?
- 2:00:52SPEAKER_00: The strike occurred in 81, 82.
- 2:00:57SPEAKER_00: Only nine games were played.
- 2:01:00SPEAKER_00: And they went 5-3-1 and made the playoffs for the first time since 72 under Devine.
- 2:01:09SPEAKER_00: Isn't it funny, Tyler,
- 2:01:09SPEAKER_00: when you're a young guy writing,
- 2:01:13SPEAKER_00: I can remember all the details about this particular era,
- 2:01:17SPEAKER_00: but in the 2000 aughts, it all runs together.
- 2:01:22SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 2:01:25SPEAKER_00: And then the next year he went eight and eight,
- 2:01:29SPEAKER_00: terrible game management in the finale down in Chicago.
- 2:01:34SPEAKER_00: I believe that game would have put him in the playoffs two, three degrees.
- 2:01:38SPEAKER_00: It's like his faculties,
- 2:01:44SPEAKER_00: his knowledge of the game left him that day down at the Frozen Soldier Field and all
- 2:01:49SPEAKER_00: that wind chill.
- 2:01:51SPEAKER_01: Negative 17 wind chill, by the way.
- 2:01:54SPEAKER_00: Didn't call his timeouts.
- 2:01:56SPEAKER_00: It was horrible, horrible coaching.
- 2:02:00SPEAKER_00: And then he was fired the next day by Judge Perrins, the team president.
- 2:02:05SPEAKER_00: And then he had the chutzpah to call a press conference then about 11 a.m.
- 2:02:12SPEAKER_00: in which he cited T.R.
- 2:02:14SPEAKER_00: Teddy Roosevelt, how it's the man in the arena.
- 2:02:17SPEAKER_00: You know this.
- 2:02:18SPEAKER_00: Everybody has used that quote over time.
- 2:02:22SPEAKER_00: So
- 2:02:24SPEAKER_00: he finished up while he had
- 2:02:28SPEAKER_00: Winning record over his last two seasons.
- 2:02:31SPEAKER_00: In the playoffs, he won a playoff game, too.
- 2:02:33SPEAKER_00: They beat the St. Louis Cardinals and then lost at Dallas.
- 2:02:37SPEAKER_00: So that's it.
- 2:02:38SPEAKER_00: We'll move on from that era for next week's memory.
- 2:02:43SPEAKER_01: That last year, there were some fun games in there.
- 2:02:47SPEAKER_01: That was when they beat the Redskins, 48-47, that crazy primetime game, right?
- 2:02:53SPEAKER_01: And the Redskins went to the Super Bowl that year.
- 2:02:55SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:02:57SPEAKER_01: Gosh, 55-14 against Tampa.
- 2:03:00SPEAKER_01: They put up points, but there was no defense.
- 2:03:04SPEAKER_01: Lynn Dickey led the league in passing yards,
- 2:03:06SPEAKER_01: touchdowns, and interceptions, and game-winning drives.
- 2:03:10SPEAKER_01: Finished fifth in the MVP voting that year.
- 2:03:13SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 2:03:13SPEAKER_00: He did?
- 2:03:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:03:18SPEAKER_01: Lynn Dickey had some harsh words for Matt LaFleur,
- 2:03:21SPEAKER_01: by the way, on Bill Michael's show last week.
- 2:03:24SPEAKER_01: Caught that.
- 2:03:24SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 2:03:25SPEAKER_00: Lynn Dickey.
- 2:03:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:03:27SPEAKER_00: What'd he say?
- 2:03:29SPEAKER_01: Undisciplined, just out of control.
- 2:03:31SPEAKER_01: Didn't like what he saw.
- 2:03:33SPEAKER_00: Did you hear the tape?
- 2:03:36SPEAKER_01: Just the clip.
- 2:03:37SPEAKER_01: I didn't listen to the whole interview.
- 2:03:38SPEAKER_01: I should have.
- 2:03:39SPEAKER_00: How'd Lynn sound?
- 2:03:41SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 2:03:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:03:43SPEAKER_00: He's a great guy.
- 2:03:44SPEAKER_00: He taught me a lot.
- 2:03:47SPEAKER_00: He's a great man.
- 2:03:49SPEAKER_01: I love to hear that.
- 2:03:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he may be a little underrated in the
- 2:03:54SPEAKER_01: Annals of Packers history,
- 2:03:56SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 2:03:56SPEAKER_01: like there's some players and some moments in those 29 years of ineptitude
- 2:04:03SPEAKER_01: that should be acknowledged.
- 2:04:04SPEAKER_01: And I always love it when you bring the memory into those dark ages.
- 2:04:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:04:11SPEAKER_01: Final thoughts, Bob hit me.
- 2:04:15SPEAKER_00: Four more games this week.
- 2:04:17SPEAKER_00: This division is, I'm not, I'm not sold on any of these teams, Tyler.
- 2:04:23SPEAKER_00: Vikings got the lead, but quarterback issues, I don't know.
- 2:04:30SPEAKER_00: I see the division eight and four.
- 2:04:33SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a good run.
- 2:04:38SPEAKER_01: As we said before, the first ball was kicked.
- 2:04:41SPEAKER_01: Any team could finish first.
- 2:04:43SPEAKER_01: Any team could finish last.
- 2:04:45SPEAKER_01: We're learning a lot, but there is a ton of football still to be played here.
- 2:04:51SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 2:04:51SPEAKER_01: Phenomenal dissection, as usual, from our Pro Football Hall of Famer, Bob McGinn.
- 2:04:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for hanging, Bob.
- 2:04:59SPEAKER_01: And thank you, everybody out there, for watching, listening, reading, and sharing with a friend.
- 2:05:04SPEAKER_01: Let's keep this thing growing.
- 2:05:06SPEAKER_01: We'll catch you next week.
- 2:05:07SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
