Latest / Learn Dutch with Fexingo / Dutch Ordinal Numbers - Eerste Tweede Derde
Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode? Luna: Always, Lucas. You know I've been practicing my Dutch numbers — ik kan tellen van één tot twintig! Lucas: That's awesome! So today I thought we'd build on that. Instead of counting 'one, two, three', let's learn 'first, second, third'. Luna: Oh, ordinal numbers! I've been wanting that. How do you say 'first' in Dutch? Lucas: It's 'eerste'. Say it with me: eerste. Luna: Eerste. Lucas: Perfect. Second is 'tweede'. Luna: Tweede. Lucas: And third is 'derde'. Luna: Derde. Eerste, tweede, derde. That's not too hard! Lucas: Exactly. And they stay the same whether you're talking about a person, a thing, or a place. For example, 'de eerste keer' means 'the first time'. Luna: De eerste keer. Like 'de eerste keer dat ik Nederlands sprak'? Lucas: Yes! Good sentence. And 'de tweede deur' is 'the second door'. Luna: De tweede deur. So if I'm looking for a room, I can say 'het is de tweede deur'. Lucas: Exactly. Or for a building, 'de derde verdieping' is 'the third floor'. Luna: De derde verdieping. That's useful for sure. Lucas: Let's practice a mini dialogue. Imagine you're at a hotel, and the receptionist says: 'Uw kamer is op de derde verdieping, de tweede deur links.' What do you understand? Luna: Umm... 'Your room is on the third floor, the second door on the left'? Yes! Lucas: You got it. Now you try saying that: 'Mijn kamer is op de derde verdieping, de tweede deur rechts.' Luna: Mijn kamer is op de derde verdieping, de tweede deur rechts. Oof, that's a mouthful, but I think I said it right? Lucas: Perfect pronunciation. Let's review all three: eerste, tweede, derde. Luna: Eerste, tweede, derde. Lucas: And in context: de eerste keer, de tweede deur, de derde verdieping. Luna: De eerste keer, de tweede deur, de derde verdieping. I love how logical Dutch can be. Lucas: Perfect. And remember, listener, you can practice this when going up stairs or walking into a building. It'll stick. Luna: Yeah, even just counting in ordinals as you walk: eerste trap, tweede trap, derde trap. Lucas: There you go. That's it for today. Practice saying 'eerste', 'tweede', 'derde' out loud.
