- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the flight prep group.
- 0:16Welcome to episode 120 of How to Become a Flight Nurse Podcast.
- 0:21Today I'm going to bring you the topic that we discussed inside
- 0:25the Flight Prep Academy this week.
- 0:26I just thought it was so good to continue on with this
- 0:30conversation because I think a lot of you who work in
- 0:34healthcare are plagued with this right here.
- 0:37So I want to bring you the conversation and the topic of
- 0:45what we kind of discussed at the beginning of our weekly call
- 0:47this week inside the Flight Prep Academy.
- 0:50I don't know about you, but when I first started in the ICUI
- 0:55would come home with these thoughts that would play over
- 1:00and over and over in my head. And sometimes they would sound
- 1:04like, did I do everything right? Did I put everything in my
- 1:07charting? Did I give report right?
- 1:11Is my nurse manager mad at me? Are my coworkers mad at me?
- 1:14And I would just replay all of these thoughts over and over and
- 1:17over and over again. If you guys can relate to this
- 1:23in any way, shape or form, this episode is going to help you
- 1:27with the ongoing thoughts that your brain offers you.
- 1:31So the way that I want to explain this, and I explained
- 1:35this to the group this week was they kind of laughed at me
- 1:40because they didn't know what this was.
- 1:41But in California specifically where I live, there are a lot of
- 1:47mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have been so bad this
- 1:49year that we actually have a machine or I mean a truck that
- 1:56comes by and sprays pesticides like once or twice a month in
- 2:01the street because the mosquitoes are so bad.
- 2:03And I am just the type of person who the mosquitoes love me.
- 2:08They eat my skin. I get bites everywhere, usually
- 2:12like 5 or 10 at a time. And then they Welt up and they
- 2:15become really big and I, I almost think I'm kind of
- 2:18allergic to them. So mosquitoes have been really
- 2:21bad and really prominent in my area, and it's really humid and
- 2:24hot where I live. So there's these things called
- 2:27mosquito eaters, and they're pretty big in size.
- 2:32You might even think they look like a spider.
- 2:34But they have wings. They have 8 or 10 legs and you
- 2:39can find them in your house sometimes.
- 2:41And often times you're like, oh, what is that?
- 2:46And you don't see the mosquitoes because the mosquitoes are so
- 2:50small and you hear them. But these mosquito eaters look
- 2:53disgusting. They're big, but you don't want
- 2:56to kill them because they in turn eat the mosquitoes that
- 2:59come into your house. So the way that I was
- 3:01explaining, this is my youngest son, whenever he sees them, he
- 3:06freaks out and he spends a lot of time screaming about it and
- 3:11making a big deal about these mosquito eaters.
- 3:14And I'm like, just leave it alone.
- 3:16They're not a big deal. We don't want to kill them.
- 3:18They're eating the mosquitoes. Just focus on something else.
- 3:21And so this is what I wanted to bring you as an example of of
- 3:26your thoughts that can spin around in your head.
- 3:30They can be like this mosquito eater where you see them and you
- 3:35can consciously choose to spend a lot of time with these
- 3:38negative thoughts that your brain offers you, or you can
- 3:42just notice and let them be there and not spend a lot of
- 3:46time with them. Some examples of these negative
- 3:50thoughts that pass through my brain on the daily is you're not
- 3:55doing enough, you're not doing it quick enough, you didn't get
- 3:58through that task quick enough, you're being lazy.
- 4:01When I take a moment to not do anything at all, those are the
- 4:04thoughts that can plague me and can come over time and time
- 4:08again. In my head, we think something
- 4:11like 70,000 thoughts a day. Now those are my common ones.
- 4:16And before I found the tools of poaching, I would spend a lot of
- 4:20time paying attention to those ones, paying attention to that
- 4:24big mosquito eater instead of just realizing, oh, that's one
- 4:28of the 70 thousand thoughts that I'm going to think on the daily
- 4:31and not spend a lot of time with it.
- 4:33Just let it hang out and be there.
- 4:36We don't want to kill it. We actually don't want to get
- 4:38rid of it. We're just going to let it be
- 4:39there. And so this is what I kind of
- 4:42wanted to talk to you guys about today.
- 4:44Knowing that we have 70,000 thoughts a day.
- 4:47There are ones that our brains like to put on repeat,
- 4:52especially when we're stressed, especially when we're tired,
- 4:56especially when we're overworked or especially right after a
- 4:59shift. And for me, those were like, I'm
- 5:02not doing enough. I got to do it quicker.
- 5:05Do they like me? Did I mess up on something?
- 5:08Are they going to find me out? Like those were completely
- 5:11ridiculous thoughts that my brain would like to offer me.
- 5:14And I still kind of still have those ones currently.
- 5:17Like, am I being lazy? Like you're being lazy, you're
- 5:20not doing enough. You're not checking the things
- 5:22off your list. What does that mean if you
- 5:24don't? So this is what I wanted to talk
- 5:27about today to kind of mitigate and help you with some of these
- 5:31thoughts. The other example that I gave
- 5:35that I actually heard on another podcast episode this week was,
- 5:40and I'm going to just say it like a little bit differently.
- 5:42If the mosquito eater one doesn't doesn't isn't helpful
- 5:45for you. It's like thinking about you
- 5:49have the front door slightly cracked because you didn't close
- 5:52it all the way, and then you have a sliding door to your
- 5:56backyard. And it's like those thoughts are
- 5:59coming in the front door and they're going through your house
- 6:02and they're going to go out the back door.
- 6:05But we can choose to intentionally spend time with
- 6:11those negative thoughts that are coming through the front door,
- 6:14or we can just allow them to pass through.
- 6:17And what happens when we spend more time with these negative
- 6:21thoughts? It affects our day.
- 6:23We ruminate on it, we judge ourselves on it, and then we
- 6:27just let that take up all of our time.
- 6:30I don't know if you guys have heard the podcast episode that
- 6:36Taylor Swift did. I, it was like on Travis Kelce's
- 6:41podcast, but she said your time is expensive and how you spend
- 6:46it is expensive. And it just made me think of
- 6:48this like what we spend time with thinking effects our day,
- 6:54effects our outcome effects how we feel and show up for the day.
- 6:58Same with what we spend time thinking about other people's
- 7:02thoughts of us. And this is like really what she
- 7:03was getting to is we can spend time thinking about how other
- 7:07people think about us, or we can just look at as our time as
- 7:10expensive and not everybody will will get to have your time and
- 7:16you get to intentionally choose what you spend time with.
- 7:21So I wanted to give these two examples because we don't want
- 7:26to judge the thoughts that we're having.
- 7:28We just want to notice that they're hanging out there.
- 7:30We just want to notice that they're a mosquito eater and
- 7:32it's going to be there. We don't want to kill it because
- 7:35it's going to help us. We don't want to get rid of it.
- 7:38We just want to let it be there, but we don't want to.
- 7:41We want to choose to intentionally not spend time
- 7:44with those thoughts. So I offered them these three
- 7:49questions and I'm going to kind of talk through and offer you
- 7:53these three questions too. And these are really three steps
- 7:56that I utilize every day as I'm having these thoughts and I'm
- 8:00choosing to intentionally spend times with certain ones.
- 8:02And here's the thing guys, no ones perfect at this.
- 8:05I'm not perfect at it either. There's days where I'm super
- 8:08tired or I'm frustrated at my kids or my family or whatnot and
- 8:12I choose to ruminate more on these negative thoughts and I
- 8:14let it affect my whole day. You guys all know what that
- 8:16feels like with the end of the day where you're like, I am just
- 8:20feeling frustrated and down in the dumps.
- 8:24But I want to give you a conscious 3 step process and
- 8:28three questions to think about to help you pull yourself out of
- 8:31it. If it's been ongoing for you, if
- 8:34it's now moved into days and weeks so that you can as you're
- 8:39working towards your flight goal or as you're working towards a
- 8:42big goal or leveling up or creating confidence, this will
- 8:46move you in a different direction.
- 8:47So the first question to think about is what is the negative
- 8:52thoughts that your brain is offering you?
- 8:55Sometimes we can just be like, I feel terrible today, I feel
- 8:58frustrated. But naming what the thoughts are
- 9:02that's creating that feeling for you will will give you more
- 9:06intentionality on what it is. So what negative thoughts is
- 9:11your brain offering you? For me, my examples are I'm not
- 9:16good enough, I'm not doing it quick enough, I'm being lazy.
- 9:20Another example that I want to give you and then I've talked
- 9:23about here on this podcast before, but I think it's good to
- 9:25talk about for the last 15 years that I've been a nurse, I worked
- 9:28a night shift and then I did 24 hour shifts.
- 9:30So being tired, and I know all of you guys can relate to this
- 9:33is just something of the norm, but I did realize that all my
- 9:38conversations and I would start out every conversation outside
- 9:42of work with I am tired. My kids would say or my husband
- 9:46would say, hey, how is work? I'd be like, I am tired.
- 9:47I go to a social event or an outing and I'd be like, I am
- 9:51tired. It's like I LED with that
- 9:53thought and that's the first thought that my brain offered me
- 9:57and it was on so much of replay and default that I didn't even
- 10:02have to ask myself, am I really tired?
- 10:04I just said it. And that was one of the negative
- 10:07thoughts that always like, came up for default for me.
- 10:09But when I started realizing that, I started saying it a lot.
- 10:14I asked myself, oh, am I really tired?
- 10:17Or am I just saying this because this is the easiest thing to say
- 10:20and that my brain wants to offer me all the time?
- 10:22And so I just say it. And I realized sometimes I
- 10:26wasn't even tired, but I would just say, oh, yeah, I'm tired.
- 10:29It was a long shift. I'm tired.
- 10:31And So what I did was I started to notice that that's the
- 10:35default that thought my brain, that's a negative thought my
- 10:38brain wanted to offer me. So then I would ask myself
- 10:40before I said it, am I really tired?
- 10:42And then I would start to make conscious effort to say
- 10:45something else. And when I started doing that, I
- 10:50decided consciously to never say that again.
- 10:54And I very rarely you guys ever say, even if I am tired, I very
- 10:58rarely say I'm tired because I just grew the capacity to be the
- 11:02person who consciously made the effort, even if I was to say
- 11:07something else and to think about something else.
- 11:10And so that's an example of a negative thought that maybe your
- 11:14brain offers you on repeat. And maybe out of the 70 thousand
- 11:17thoughts it offers you that 50,000 times during the day.
- 11:21But knowing what those are has you realize, oh, when I just say
- 11:26I'm tired all the time, it has me frustrated.
- 11:31It has me not wanting to go out. It has wanting me to pull back.
- 11:34It has me wanting to isolate. It has me wanting to stay at
- 11:37home and sit in bed or sit on the couch and watch Netflix.
- 11:41So the first thing is what are the negative thoughts that your
- 11:45brain is offering you on repeat? Name them, know what they are,
- 11:49write them down. The second step and second
- 11:53question I want to offer you is what would be different if we
- 11:58didn't judge that we had them and we didn't spend more time
- 12:02with them. So just like the thought, I'm
- 12:06tired. I don't want to judge myself
- 12:09that I have it. It's like, of course I'm tired.
- 12:12I worked a long 24 hour shift. I had to do a bunch of charts.
- 12:17I had to work overtime or I didn't get any sleep, right?
- 12:22Like circumstantially, yes, of course we're tired.
- 12:25So don't judge yourself that you're having that thought if,
- 12:30but don't allow yourself to spend time with it.
- 12:33Just let it be there. Just let it be that big mosquito
- 12:36eater that is ugly and is hanging out in the corner of the
- 12:39ceiling of your room. So what would be different if we
- 12:42didn't judge that we had them and we didn't spend extra time
- 12:46with them? That's Step 2.
- 12:49Step 3. The final piece of this is what
- 12:54can we decide to be thinking intentionally that is believable
- 12:59for you right now? So instead of thinking about I'm
- 13:04tired, I'm not doing enough, I'm being lazy.
- 13:07What's a thought that we can intentionally be thinking about
- 13:12that is believable for us? Now for me, sometimes what I
- 13:18have to go back to is I'm doing the best that I can with what I
- 13:21have. I'm doing the best that I can
- 13:24with the little sleep that I have.
- 13:27This is why it is good enough. This is what I am intentionally
- 13:31doing today. That is good enough.
- 13:33OK, yes, I am tired, but I do know how to do things tired.
- 13:39I do know how to do hard things. So what is the intentional
- 13:43thought that is believable for you right now?
- 13:47And what's important about this third step is that you want to
- 13:50decide ahead of time. Decide ahead of time what that
- 13:54thought is going to be. So for example, one of the other
- 13:59negative thoughts my brain always offers me is I'm not
- 14:01doing enough. Like just on the day, it likes
- 14:04to tell me that every day you're not doing enough, you're not
- 14:06doing enough. And an intentional thought that
- 14:09I've chose to really work on in this last month and that's been
- 14:13really working for me is but this is the plan.
- 14:16I'm doing the plan. I'm working a plan.
- 14:18OK, brain, I hear you. I might not be doing enough.
- 14:21I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm thinking that I'm not doing enough.
- 14:24But this is a plan and it's working.
- 14:28And so decide ahead of time what's believable for you.
- 14:31What's the intentional thought that you can go to?
- 14:35And then when the negative thought comes up, when the big
- 14:38mosquito eater is there and you want to freak out about it, go
- 14:42to that thought that you decide and spend more time with that.
- 14:45Because when we can spend time with the intentional thought,
- 14:48our actions will be very different.
- 14:51We're going to go about our day very differently.
- 14:54And here's the thing, we have agency to choose out of these 70
- 14:57thousand thoughts. So we can choose to continue to
- 15:00Roman and on it, feel bad about it and go into this deep dark
- 15:04hole, or we can let it be there, not judge that it's there, and
- 15:10then intentionally decide to focus on something else.
- 15:15OK, I hope that this episode helped you guys that might be
- 15:21feeling stuck or might be ruminating on a thought or
- 15:25having your brain with this thought really work against you.
- 15:29When we can intentionally choose what we are thinking, our days
- 15:34will be very different. How we work towards our goal
- 15:37will be very different. And I do want to add this to the
- 15:39end. You can have doubt and be scared
- 15:44and still take action. So if these negative thoughts
- 15:47that you are having, like for example, mine, you're not doing
- 15:50enough. If those are causing negative
- 15:52emotions for you, you just so that you can, you know, you can
- 15:57have doubt and still continue to take action.
- 16:00And sometimes that's what we got to do when we can't get rid of
- 16:03them. Sometimes we got to just let the
- 16:05big mosquito eater be in the side of the room and still take
- 16:08action anyway and still go on with our day.
- 16:12If you guys want help getting unstuck, if you want help
- 16:16working through these thoughts, this is the work that we are
- 16:19doing inside the Flight Prep Academy.
- 16:21The plan to get to flight is easy.
- 16:23Map out your plan, do ride alongs, prep for interviews.
- 16:26It is easy. But it's all the mind drama and
- 16:30chatter that your brain offers you.
- 16:32It's the obstacles, it's the starting and the stopping.
- 16:35It's the going through with the plan and doing it on your own
- 16:38that is hard. So if you want help getting to
- 16:41flight, you want the community, you want the support, you want
- 16:44want to work your plan, and you want to get on track both with

- 17:10our intentional thought. That's how we create the results
- 17:13that we want on the daily. That's how we start the momentum
- 17:17and that's how we compound them to getting to our flight goal.
