- 0:28I'm alive. Welcome to the All Balls No
- 0:32Philtre podcast. Live from the cabin kitchen.
- 0:34I'm Zach. He's Brad.
- 0:37Hi there. Behind the scenes, we have a man
- 0:40that single handedly keeps the phileo fish on the McDonald's
- 0:43menu because he can't stop buying him.
- 0:44He's researcher Cal. Oh God, phileo fish is something
- 0:51I've never ever tasted in my life, nor do I ever want to.
- 0:54That's still so wrong. No, no, I can't.
- 1:00I can't say I have right. And for some reason, sorry, I've
- 1:03just knocked Everything Everywhere.
- 1:04So you might be able to hear me moving things about.
- 1:06I got a bit, I got a bit eccentric there.
- 1:08But for some reason with the fillet of fish, there's just
- 1:10something about it, like I like fish fingers.
- 1:12I don't, I don't mind fish fingers.
- 1:14I can't imagine being much different to a fish finger.
- 1:19It's right weird, you know, because I think so much goes
- 1:22into like a McDonald's burger for a way to start show the
- 1:25Madonald's burger, right. I add it's, I think there's so
- 1:29much in the bread because I've had, you know, on the the new
- 1:31breakfast savers menu, they've got them just the sausage
- 1:34sandwich now it's like £2 and it's basically sausage Patty
- 1:38from your Egg Mcmuffin. But then like the bread from
- 1:40just a normal hamburger. And it's the weirdest thing I've
- 1:42had. Like it just like it's just a
- 1:44weird taste. And I imagine that's what like
- 1:46the fillet fish is. It's like a crap messed up fish
- 1:49a sandwich and I don't get it. You should just be on thick
- 1:52white bread. Yeah, and and and do you know
- 1:54what right, I think they've just done a 11 as well like as a like
- 1:59a secret menu thing they did. I think they did a 11 as well.
- 2:01But yeah, the fillet O fish. What a way to start, eh?
- 2:05Yeah, you can't can't beat it, eh.
- 2:07How are you doing mate? Anyway, how are you?
- 2:09I'm all. Right mate, I'm all right, yes,
- 2:13not too. Not doing too bad in yourself.
- 2:16Yeah, man, I'm, I'm good. Thanks.
- 2:18I'm happy to be back. It's I'm, I'm really looking
- 2:20forward to my, my Tuesday evening records.
- 2:23I must admit they're there's something that I am looking
- 2:26forward to getting into. But what do we have in store for
- 2:30today's show? The offseason is here, Brad.
- 2:32Take it away. Of the offseason is here for our
- 2:36show today. Then we're going to touch on the
- 2:38headlines, of course that have occurred this past week as
- 2:41always and we'll be starting off our offseason programme.
- 2:45So we're going to be looking at the franchise tags or any
- 2:48potential franchise tags that we're expecting to see ahead of
- 2:52the free agency frenzy and the combined start of this week.
- 2:56So we'll, we'll visit Indianapolis and get any stories
- 2:59that are developing there. And officially for the first
- 3:04time, as announced last week, our I Can't Spake segment.
- 3:08So along with our weekly all of the balls, we're going to be
- 3:12visiting rugby league a little bit more regular.
- 3:16But I think if we probably get straight into those news
- 3:19headlines, we probably need to begin really with the sad news
- 3:22coming out of Indiana in the town of New Albany.
- 3:26So obviously, you know, if you're, if you're in tune with
- 3:29the NFL and you follow on socials and things like that,
- 3:32you'll have seen the sad news of Rondelle Moore, Vikings receiver
- 3:38at the age of 25. I believe he was found with a
- 3:42what's assumed to be or been, you know, discussed as a
- 3:45self-inflicted gunshot wound. So he's found in a a garage of a
- 3:49property in in New Albany where he he actually started his high
- 3:53school football career. It's a really, really sad news
- 3:57coming out of Indiana really, you know, a young, a young star.
- 4:02And it's, it's sad to think what, what drove that?
- 4:05But you know, it's all speculation.
- 4:07But sad nonetheless. Yeah, it's it's not nice to
- 4:10hear. And you know, as as thoughts and
- 4:12prayers go to everyone that's that's involved, his life, his
- 4:15family, his friends and everything.
- 4:17Hey, look, you know, to anybody that's listened to this, if
- 4:21speak out your help, you know, you've, you've got you, you have
- 4:25someone out there that loves you and will listen to you.
- 4:27So please don't ever feel like you can't speak.
- 4:30So just do so. Yeah.
- 4:31But yeah, very, very sad news. And we send everyone here at the
- 4:35All Balls no Philtre podcast, we do send our thoughts and prayers
- 4:37to everyone involved that's been that's been hurt by this.
- 4:41But we're not going to touch on it too much because there's
- 4:43still some speculation out there.
- 4:45We are going to move on to the other headlines from around the
- 4:49NFL and from around the world. The NFL scouting combine has
- 4:54officially started started on Monday the 23rd of February.
- 4:58We're going to be touching up on this a little bit throughout the
- 5:02show, touching touching on this a little bit, you know what I
- 5:08mean? So we're going to be touching on
- 5:10this coming a little bit in the show and we're going to be
- 5:13touched on this week in week out as well because for the next,
- 5:16you know, a few weeks that's on now or next week or so.
- 5:20I should really know this, but kind of mainly from there.
- 5:24Yeah. So I'll be touching upon that.
- 5:26And the NFL teams are starting to franchise tag their players
- 5:29as well. Again, something be touching on
- 5:31today. Some players will be in free
- 5:33agencies, some people who getting franchise tag will get.
- 5:36Will explain everything you need to know about that coming up
- 5:40soon. Also the NFL international
- 5:43games, they're starting to get announced more and more.
- 5:46The Detroit Lions have announced that they'll be one of the teams
- 5:49that are playing in Munich this year.
- 5:51So Germany 2026 will have the Detroit Lions will be at least
- 5:57one of the teams out there. So that should be fun to see.
- 6:00I'm exciting to see the rest of the lineup.
- 6:02I kind of like how the NFL do it where they they drip feed all
- 6:07the teams going out and obviously the other
- 6:08international game. We've got San Fran and Rams over
- 6:11in Australia too. So it is definitely getting
- 6:14international now. Bit of a big names.
- 6:19There's been a few people being released around the NFL over the
- 6:22past past few days, past few weeks, I'll say, but one of the
- 6:25bigger, bigger names or should I say bigger contract names.
- 6:29Yeah, a lot of Falcons have are set to release, should I say,
- 6:33pretty much confirmed releasing Kirk Cousins now it back in
- 6:372024, Kirk Cousins signed like a big, big contract as a QB and
- 6:43then they just designed Michael Pennix.
- 6:46Also, the draft of Michael Pennock shall say, who then won
- 6:49that QB battle throughout that year.
- 6:51Bit of controversy there because of how much they paid Cousins
- 6:55and I imagine now they're going to be taking some sort of some
- 7:00sort of hit on this this on the on the cap now because of this
- 7:03contract, but I'm not too sure on that land.
- 7:06We'll wait until more of the numbers kind of get out there
- 7:08and come out. But that's one of the bigger
- 7:10names at this moment in time. We'll touch on a bit a few more
- 7:13of them going forward, but any big names we'll report to you
- 7:17from there. Brad, anything from the the news
- 7:21this week that you want to touch on before we move on?
- 7:26No, I think it's just been an interesting one to see where
- 7:27Kirk ends up. Well, because I think there's a
- 7:29few teams this year that could probably do with that veteran
- 7:33quarterback. There's been a lot of
- 7:35speculation they'll end back up at the Vikings, which would be
- 7:39interesting to see. It's weird because it's a good
- 7:42fit for the Vikings, but obviously they moved on from him
- 7:44and you know that maybe teams like the Cardinals, maybe the
- 7:49Dolphins, you know, places like that that could do with that
- 7:52veteran sort of player, depending on what what moves
- 7:56they might make. Obviously the speculation we've
- 7:59touched on already. So we don't need to get in
- 8:01about, you know, the Cardinals and Dolphins quarterback
- 8:03situation. But it's not just those two, is
- 8:05it? There's a few teams that could
- 8:06do with that veteran presence. And I think he's still got, you
- 8:12know, he's still got some left in him and he's still got some
- 8:14in the tank. So.
- 8:15I see him, I see him doing that like Joe Flacco role for the
- 8:18next few years, just dipping in our teams, just helping out
- 8:21backfield, like not necessarily getting that TV time, but doing
- 8:24a lot of veteran QB work in that backfield, helping the young
- 8:27guns kind of learn, learn the ropes a little bit slightly.
- 8:30He's still got something there. But yeah, sweet.
- 8:32So they're the news headlines from this week.
- 8:35Now before I forget, guys that always leave this until the back
- 8:38end of the podcast. If you're listening to this and
- 8:40you want to see some really nice visuals of my face and Brads,
- 8:44then head over to our YouTube channel or the Spotify.
- 8:48Our Spotify channel does have videos on there as well at ABNF
- 8:52pod across all of the socials. But yeah, head over to his
- 8:56YouTube channel. Please hit subscribe, like
- 8:58follow, leave as a comment, get involved.
- 9:01And the main thing is sharing this to your friends.
- 9:03We want to kind of get out there a little bit more and, and, and
- 9:07get your views and your friends views and stuff.
- 9:09We're getting quite a few comments through a Spotify at
- 9:11moment. It's pretty nice to see.
- 9:12So we'd like to keep getting some more interactions with you
- 9:15guys from there. So again, head over, follow like
- 9:18and all that jazz, right? Franchise tagging.
- 9:25So we hear this, we hear this statement every year as an NFL
- 9:29fan. And if you are new to the NFL,
- 9:31you might think, well, what the you know is, is franchise
- 9:35tagging. It's not something you see in in
- 9:37like UK sports in particular. So Brad, do you want to give us
- 9:40a quick 32nd explanation as to what franchise tagging actually
- 9:45is? And we'll get into it from
- 9:47there. Yeah, I'd be more than happy to
- 9:51and I can't wait to mess something up and be called out
- 9:53on it. But in essence that, you know,
- 9:56for those who maybe are fully in the know, the franchise tag is a
- 10:00tool that teams can use to essentially hold on to a player.
- 10:04So as they're becoming a free agent, they can apply one of
- 10:08three different tags to the player, two of which are called
- 10:13franchise tags as exclusive and the non exclusive with slight
- 10:16differences. And then the third type of tag
- 10:19is a transition tag, which and much less common generally, in
- 10:25essence, it's a way to be able to hold on to a player for an
- 10:27extra year beyond the contract. Now that does come with a
- 10:30caveat. So I think we've got a slide
- 10:33here that will show us some average salaries, if I'm not
- 10:37mistaken. And this, this is the caveat to
- 10:41it really, because otherwise, you know, you've got a good
- 10:43player and yeah, we'll just franchise tag him and pay him
- 10:46$2,000,000. It don't work like that.
- 10:47So in essence, each position has a franchise tag salary and for
- 10:53the exclusive and non exclusive franchise tag, that's based off
- 10:56the top five salaries at that position.
- 10:59So if it's quarterback, for example, the five quarterbacks
- 11:02with the highest annual average salary, it is an average of that
- 11:08and that's what that player will get.
- 11:09So if you've got, you know, a really good quarterback who's
- 11:12had a great year and you want to carry that on, but maybe you're
- 11:15not thinking is worth that top end, you know, 47, you know,
- 11:18nearly $50 million or you don't have that salary cap space, then
- 11:22you might not use that tag. You might need to try and
- 11:23negotiate, but it's a bit of a bargaining chip.
- 11:28As I say, there's, there's three different types and the, the
- 11:30exclusive and non exclusive, basically the same.
- 11:33It just allows or disallows negotiations and and there's
- 11:36then a penalty if they declined to match like teams declined to
- 11:41match it and picks trade in. We won't go fully into it, but
- 11:44that's the franchise tags in a nutshell, really.
- 11:48They never really do anything easy, do they?
- 11:51They can never just blight eyes contract extension.
- 11:53No, that it's just something and each team can only do 1
- 11:59franchise tag per year. I'm right in thinking right.
- 12:02So you kind of you have to choose wisely with who you
- 12:04franchise tagging for that season, correct.
- 12:08So if you if you sign like so, you've got a.
- 12:12Choice between an exclusive and a non exclusive.
- 12:15And then plus you can use the transition tag.
- 12:18So just to sort of the transition tag's slight a bit
- 12:21more different than the other two because you can negotiate
- 12:23and you can match offers. There's no draft pick
- 12:27compensation. But the flip to that is it's
- 12:30this the average salary of the top 10 salaries.
- 12:34So you can lower in that salary, but you've got a bigger risk
- 12:37because when you're negotiating you don't get any compensation,
- 12:41so. Hey, Joe, Yeah, so there's a
- 12:46couple of big names out there, two in particular that strike
- 12:48out to us that are expected to be franchise tag.
- 12:51One of them in the news more than the other.
- 12:53The big biggest one out of them to I should say the one more
- 12:56confirmed is the Kyle Pitts news.
- 12:58They're set to pretty much they're pretty much confirmed.
- 13:01They are going to be the franchise tagging Kyle Pitts
- 13:04going into next year's season, as well as have been heavy
- 13:06rumours that George Pickens at the Cowboys will also be
- 13:10franchise tagged. Kyle picks for me definite one
- 13:14of the ones where like I think he's shown he hadn't shown that
- 13:18potential what he came out of college to to have and he came
- 13:22out of college this next big stud of a tight end and he I
- 13:26don't think he's little to his name which yet, but he has shown
- 13:28them glimpses of greatness. I say greatness, just really
- 13:32good plays. So I think that's probably why
- 13:35it is decision from their side of things.
- 13:38I'm still not sure if it's like a dead cert that is still there
- 13:41next year. There's there's two parts to
- 13:45this one, I think because you you saw quite a lot of talk of
- 13:47Kyle Pitts being in being at other teams.
- 13:50And there's definitely I think that interest there as him as a
- 13:53tight end, like he's clearly got the the athleticism to do
- 13:57something special. It's just not converted.
- 13:59Now. I think what what's probably
- 14:01happening is the Falcons are probably looking at this as
- 14:04right, we've brought in Stefanski, you know, he's had
- 14:07some success with Joe Ku and things.
- 14:10So can you replicate that? Obviously it's a different type
- 14:13to end, but can you replicate that with pits?
- 14:15Let's give it a year and see. And if not, then we'll move on
- 14:18or we might trade him at the deadline or it's just gives you
- 14:21that bit of capital to play with.
- 14:23And I think that's probably a little bit of what it's to do
- 14:26with, but I think it'll be an interesting one.
- 14:28I think the pickings ones are a really like a really good
- 14:33obvious want to do like he's he's performed really well and
- 14:38Dallas had some really strong moments.
- 14:40They're a good, they're a good side.
- 14:41Last year they just fell short of it.
- 14:44They're getting that two star, 2 five star wide receivers without
- 14:49having to pay 2 five star wide receivers.
- 14:51So that one extra year out there because I've already got CD
- 14:53lamp, which are the, you know, the pain and such.
- 14:56George Pickens after the year that he's just had will be
- 14:58wanting it'll be Cincinnati Bengals 2.0 if you ask me, with
- 15:04the the Higgins and and Jamar Chase kind of situation where
- 15:09both people are paying. They've paid in both.
- 15:11It hasn't worked out for him with this Dallas have got one
- 15:14extra year of, you know, checking it into pickings and
- 15:17seeing what what next year brings out.
- 15:19Maybe get something for some one of them throughout the year
- 15:22picked wise in a trade. So I think it's a no brainer for
- 15:25me. If they can do it, they can do
- 15:26it. I think it's, I think it's a no
- 15:28brainer. And there is a couple more
- 15:30rumoured players that just talked about a moment.
- 15:34The Ravens in particular are rumoured to become rumoured to
- 15:37be tagging or considering tagging Tyler Lindenbaum, the
- 15:42centre. Now we had a comment on our
- 15:44Spotify of a good friend of ours called Keelan.
- 15:47It was a, it was a big rave of Ravens fan and he was like, I'm
- 15:50begging if anyone from the Ravens organisation is watching
- 15:52this, I beg you, please, like we need, we need to build a, we
- 15:56need to build a line around this guy.
- 15:58So the Ravens fans want it. Whether the Ravens do it or not,
- 16:02I don't know it. Only time will tell.
- 16:05And as well, The Jets are rumoured to be tagging or
- 16:09considering tagging. Should I say brace hall now?
- 16:12For me, I think that's a relationship that needs to part
- 16:14separate ways. I just don't think it's worked
- 16:18over the past couple of years. But it is The Jets.
- 16:21You could say that about many Jets players couldn't be alike.
- 16:26Are they hoping just, you know, it's they can't expect.
- 16:29I think the difficult thing they've got that is they can't
- 16:31expect to put Glenn in charge. And then, you know, there's
- 16:35strong speculation that he could lose his job within the year.
- 16:38But they're stuck by him and they can't then say, all right,
- 16:41we're going to stick by a year, but we're going to get rid of
- 16:43some more top players because they already did that last
- 16:45season. They already got rid of a
- 16:46couple. So I just can't see how they can
- 16:49then keep doing that. And I think again, for the sake
- 16:52of a year, it's and it's not with it been a running back as
- 16:56well. It's not like it's breaking the
- 16:57bank, is it? You're looking at your top end
- 17:00sort of salaries on your line and your quarterback and you
- 17:04receive a, you know, actually even all the way down to like
- 17:08linebackers up there with that sort of offensive line and
- 17:12defensive end sort of fees. But your running back is all the
- 17:17way down there outside of your kicker and punters because no
- 17:21one cares about kickers or punters.
- 17:22Research account. I'm kidding, of course, just
- 17:26trying to trigger him already. But you know, your running back
- 17:30is way down there. It's 14 mil and the cap's gone
- 17:33up this year as well. So like, you know, for a player
- 17:37that's got quality, it's worth just giving another year, isn't
- 17:41it? With that sort of head coach
- 17:43going on, so. Yeah, and I'm surprised at what
- 17:47the franchise tag is for, for the running backs compared to
- 17:53what they've done in the past couple of years or the past.
- 17:56The past 10 years has been kind of dominated around the the
- 18:01running backs, you know, like Saquon Barkley and people are
- 18:04coming out with Derek Henry. I'm surprised it's been so, so
- 18:08long from there. What actually Justin, breaking
- 18:13news right this second. Thank you research Cal for
- 18:16throwing this into it. As we're talking about it.
- 18:19Breaking news now the the Falcons have act of officially
- 18:24franchise tag. I'll put a place a franchise tag
- 18:26on Kyle Pitts. So as we're talking about it, it
- 18:29has been broken right now. The timing on that, the timing
- 18:33on that, that. News comes from Tom Pellicera,
- 18:36by the way. Thank you, Research Cal, for
- 18:38picking that one up. So if it's not accurate, it's
- 18:40not Research Cal's fault, it's Tom Palacera's fault.
- 18:43Well, thank you for that and yes, breaking was there.
- 18:45So going on to that is not to be expected.
- 18:48He has been placed on the place on the franchise tag list.
- 18:52Now, just looking at some teams that I've been dubbed or been
- 18:56rumoured to not be using any of the franchise tags this year,
- 18:58and Giants and Seattle are two teams in particular aren't
- 19:02looking to do so. Giants just due to financial
- 19:05reasons. I think they're a bit up in the
- 19:06air at the moment. Now this is what's been
- 19:08reported. They're just trying to not do
- 19:10anything just yet money wise and kind of lump it in maybe free
- 19:13agency or I'll go from there. The Seattle one does strike me a
- 19:19little bit because they could place Kenneth Walker the Super
- 19:22Bowl MVP and I know we touched on this last week a little bit,
- 19:25but where does this leave him now?
- 19:28What is I know and you know, the Seattle have now gone up for
- 19:32sale after winning the Super Bowl, but where does this leave
- 19:35him? And what what kind of image does
- 19:40this paint for Seattle not tagging or not wanting to keep
- 19:44their Super Bowl MVP on the team the literally the following
- 19:47year? It's been a while.
- 19:49Has it been two weeks since the Super Bowl?
- 19:52It could be one of many things and this is the the nature of
- 19:56the franchise tag. It can be, it can be used to
- 20:00hold on to players. It can be used as a tool to be
- 20:03able to try and gain picks. It can be used as a tool to sort
- 20:10of say to a player, I'm going to hold on to you for now because
- 20:14we definitely want to make something happen with you and we
- 20:16just need a bit more time to back and forth.
- 20:20But it can also be used or not used rather as the as a goodwill
- 20:25gesture as well. And just say, look, you know,
- 20:28see, see what you can get. Fine.
- 20:30You know, we want to give you that opportunity.
- 20:32But look at the season you've had with us.
- 20:34You've won the Super Bowl MVP with us.
- 20:35We're going to run it. We want to run it back with you.
- 20:38But we appreciate you and want to give it a go.
- 20:41I don't know what Seattle's cat situation is off the top of my
- 20:44head. So I'm not sure whether it's
- 20:48anything like that. They've obviously got all the
- 20:51positions that they'll need to to sign re sign, negotiate
- 20:57contracts with. So I don't think it's a huge
- 21:01thing. But I think again, for that cap
- 21:03hit that we've just said 14 mil. Should they do it?
- 21:06Maybe, probably. So it's it's probably the
- 21:09surprising how how many Super Bowl MVPS have then reached free
- 21:12agency the the the very next week.
- 21:15You know that. 'D be nice.
- 21:16That'd be a nice cars could under, wouldn't it?
- 21:21But so yeah, I I'm a bit shocked, I'm not going to lie.
- 21:25But I do agree with the kind of a go get paid, mate, we're not
- 21:28going to pay. You would rather you go get paid
- 21:30and actually enjoy the money or kind of stay with us.
- 21:34The research calculating now per sport act sport rack, shall I
- 21:38say, still have the sixth highest cap space.
- 21:41So they've got the money there. So it's surprising.
- 21:43I don't think there's many more running backs on the market that
- 21:45they could, you know, getting that's going to do much better.
- 21:48But hey, look, you know, they must know something we don't
- 21:52just before we move on to the next section.
- 21:54May just a quick question regarding franchise tag itself.
- 21:57I don't know if it's just me this year or what, but do you
- 22:00think teams are moving away from franchise tagging as often?
- 22:02Because I feel like there's getting not less and less every
- 22:06year, but the bigger names are just kind of, I don't know, it
- 22:09doesn't seem to be as often now like in the in the previous
- 22:14years, it felt like in the news there was a big franchise tag
- 22:18every year or two or three, just say every year, big, big names.
- 22:22And now it's just to me that doesn't feel like there is.
- 22:26What do you reckon? I think, I think there probably
- 22:29is and I think, I think you're probably right.
- 22:31And I think or, or there's the element of it maybe is being
- 22:35used, but it's not those huge names because also what we're
- 22:38seeing more and more now, you know, if you look at receivers
- 22:42as an example, you know, your huge names there are commanding
- 22:46huge, huge money. And therefore as a result that
- 22:49that cap hit is getting bigger and bigger.
- 22:53But just look at how many top end wide receivers have been
- 22:57drafted over the last two 3-4 years.
- 23:00It's, it's almost like college players in those big money
- 23:04positions are been found more often or maybe better developed
- 23:09and they're coming into the NFL and they're having an impact
- 23:11much quicker. So is there as much of A need or
- 23:14is the value worth as, you know, worth as much as what it was
- 23:19when they're thinking? Well, actually we're scouting
- 23:21some mint receivers that are coming through and, and we'll,
- 23:23we'll take our chances there. It's, it's a tough one.
- 23:26Like the, the cap game's a messy thing.
- 23:28And the tagging thing, I don't think anyone outside of the game
- 23:31fully understands it. I think some of them actually in
- 23:33the game don't fully understand it, to be honest.
- 23:35But like, it's, it's a minefield and I don't pretend to be an
- 23:39expert, but it's, it's an interesting one.
- 23:41No, there's a lot of players as well coming through the draft in
- 23:43the the later rounds that I shined in it.
- 23:45It's just going to show that the first round picks, not
- 23:48necessarily always the best and you can give that with like just
- 23:52just throwing it out there. Two wide 2 wide receivers like
- 23:55Marvin Harrison Junior and Puka Nakua who were drafted, you
- 23:59know, in, in terms of the rounds in particular, miles apart from
- 24:03each other. And if anything, Pooka has had
- 24:05more of an impact on the NFL than what Marvin has.
- 24:09So, you know, it can go who deserves the money and I can,
- 24:13but I can guarantee from the name Harrison Junior is going to
- 24:16want to get paid at some point. He's going to he's going to show
- 24:18for it. But yeah, I agree.
- 24:20It's it's becoming one of them ways.
- 24:22I think they've been a bit more smarter now with what they're
- 24:24doing. So we're going to move on.
- 24:26The franchise tag's obviously happening.
- 24:28We're going to move on now to the NFL combine.
- 24:31Now, I'm a big fan of this. I love the NFL combine.
- 24:35But Brad Quick, 30 seconds What is the NFL Combine?
- 24:41So the NFL Combine is almost the the final stage or or second,
- 24:49the penultimate stage, if you like, of the scouting of college
- 24:52players. So college, the vast majority of
- 24:56the top end of college players will come to Indianapolis and
- 25:00they will basically work out on different physical tests.
- 25:05Some of those are about physicality.
- 25:07So like bench press, there's the 40 yard dash, etcetera,
- 25:09etcetera, the high jump, broad jump.
- 25:11And then there's the actual positional tests.
- 25:13So, you know, quarterbacks and receivers, for example, will do
- 25:16Pascalis. You know, running backs will
- 25:19have their sets, sort of route combos or runs that they're
- 25:24expected to do yaddy, yaddy. And it's an opportunity for all
- 25:28the teams to scout these players at the same time in the same
- 25:31scenario. The only thing that follows that
- 25:34really would then be the pro days.
- 25:36So your top colleges will host their own pro days, which is a
- 25:40little bit more and I'm sure we'll get to this, but they're
- 25:44probably becoming a little bit bigger now than they've used to
- 25:48be. And and sort of almost not
- 25:50overshadowing the combines combines got 319 players
- 25:54research Cal's saying there, but it's they're a lot more
- 26:00controlled. So the players and their
- 26:02trainers and the colleges can control them a lot more and show
- 26:05what they want to show, not what they've been forced to show are
- 26:08expected to show, which has its pros and cons, I guess.
- 26:12And sort of explains why Mendoza, for example, is, is
- 26:16skipping throwing. And he's the big name.
- 26:19And he spoke about him probably going first overall to the
- 26:21Raiders and he's skipped the throwing practise.
- 26:24And he's he's going to show that it is pro day instead.
- 26:27And it sort of suggests 2 things.
- 26:30It's confidence that he doesn't need to throw it in the combine.
- 26:32But the big thing for me, and it's becoming more common is
- 26:35that in the combine, they're throwing to players that they've
- 26:38not necessarily got a relationship with.
- 26:39So it can make them look worse than they potentially are.
- 26:44Whereas as I was talking about that control they're throwing to
- 26:46players who they know and they've worked out with.
- 26:50That's it. You we've seen people that don't
- 26:52know on this first time listing myself and Brad both coach over
- 26:55in the UK, coach while in the UK.
- 26:57And when we get a new QB or a new wide receiver that come and
- 27:00join the team getting that chemistry and that build up
- 27:03between. They don't matter how good they
- 27:04are getting that chemistry and build up between their
- 27:07counterpart. If it's a new QB getting that
- 27:09chemistry with all the receivers or if it's a new receiver
- 27:11getting the chemistry with the QB, you know where they're going
- 27:14to be, how fast they're going to be.
- 27:15You know, when you can look at a player running, is he running at
- 27:18full pace as a QB? You need to know this.
- 27:20If you're doing it your prodig and with with receivers that
- 27:23you've played three or four years with 24 seasons with,
- 27:26excuse me, you know where they're going to be.
- 27:30It can come down to minor. A minor thing could be a major
- 27:34thing in in in the the combine where if Mendoza, for instance,
- 27:37is throwing a ball and he's an absolute diamond, the receiver
- 27:41drops it that will that can be marked against Mendoza.
- 27:46And this is to give the kind of grey area that comes around it.
- 27:53Now I've got a list here, right, Brad?
- 27:56Just want to quickly just touch on this before we move on to
- 27:58some of the big names in in the combine.
- 28:00I've got a list here of all the QBs, all the notable QBs that
- 28:04didn't throw at the combine and wait for the pro day more than
- 28:06anything else now I'm Ward. Last year was the and and Shader
- 28:11Sanders were two of the big names from last year that didn't
- 28:14really throw or didn't throw at the NFL combine.
- 28:17Look at where they are now drafted first and then drafted
- 28:20in the fifth round. There's a big difference there.
- 28:23But if you look at the other names on this list such as Joe
- 28:26Burrow, Kyla Murray, Bryce Young, Sam Darnold, Andrew Luck
- 28:31and Matt Stafford, all first round picks, all top three other
- 28:35than other than Sam Darnold, all first overall picks as well.
- 28:39So do you think it's more of a common like you say, it's a bit
- 28:41more common trend now where it's if you kind of know you're
- 28:44backing yourself, you can't Is it confidence or is it cocky?
- 28:46Like which? Which one did you go I?
- 28:48Think it's smart, to be honest. I think if you're widely
- 28:51expected to be the first overall pick, and I think even when
- 28:55Donald went, there was talks about whether it would be him or
- 29:00Baker. And I think if you're widely
- 29:05expected to be the first overall pick, I think thrown at the
- 29:08combine or other bits such as that can only potentially hurt
- 29:13your stock. If you're already expected to be
- 29:15the first, then you can't become super first, can you?
- 29:18Whereas you could negatively impact your stock as people
- 29:23refer to it. So I don't, I don't know if it's
- 29:26necessarily cockiness. I guess there's an element of
- 29:29confidence to it. But these people have got, you
- 29:32know, they're not just kids at college like we, you know,
- 29:35understand them like, you know, some random lads coming out of
- 29:38universe third year university. It's not that it's these are
- 29:42they're athletes. They're only at college.
- 29:44I'm I'm really like stereotyping either at college to get into
- 29:48the NFL. That's why they're there as an
- 29:50athlete, as a as an NFL athlete, sorry, a football athlete to get
- 29:54drafted in the NFL. So these top end players will
- 29:57have teams around them. They'll have marketing teams,
- 29:59they'll have management teams and it will be there on their
- 30:02guidance. And obviously it works, you
- 30:05know. And as well, like if it if it
- 30:07did come across as negative stock, not as maybe not as bad
- 30:10as like the shadow standards look, because that was a real
- 30:12extreme one, but not so in you could get looked away from that
- 30:16first overall pick. And you've got to remember, 9
- 30:18times out of 10, the 1st overall pick is usually the worst team
- 30:24unless they've traded that pick away.
- 30:25So do you want to bring your stock down and see go more mid
- 30:29rounds to go to a more established team that could, you
- 30:32know, get a get a get a new QB? It's all it's all games.
- 30:36But yeah, so just a quick one. There is some more noticeable
- 30:39ones on on the screen. Again, guys, come and head over
- 30:41to our Spotify or our YouTube page.
- 30:43Come and see these lovely visuals.
- 30:44But yeah, some more noticeable names there.
- 30:47Just touching on some of some of the bigger names within the
- 30:51draft itself. Obviously Mendoza is the big,
- 30:55big name expected to go 101. We there's a lot of hype getting
- 31:00built up around the speed of a guy called Jeremiah Love.
- 31:03It was expected to be around the 4.3 average, 4.3 in the 40 yard
- 31:09dash, which is fast. This guy in college as well was
- 31:13electric to watch. I remember seeing him on the Pat
- 31:16McAfee show quite a few times just showing the highlights that
- 31:18he was electric to watch through there.
- 31:20So that's a name that we're definitely going to be keeping
- 31:22an eye on. And again with the combine, it's
- 31:24not just a 1/2 day thing. We'll be keeping you updated
- 31:27throughout the the course of this happening here.
- 31:30Now there is a few big defensive names as well.
- 31:34The defensive tackle class is getting some kind of big
- 31:36attention when it comes down to this, this draft, this year, a
- 31:39guy out of Clemson called Peter Woods who's showing he's a
- 31:44strong guy, but also with athletic.
- 31:46And you seem more of like the defensive lineman as such coming
- 31:50out being more and more athletic to just glorify tight ends,
- 31:54really like strong, really strong tight ends.
- 31:57Kaden McDonald out of Ohio State and Caleb Banks from Florida as
- 32:01well. Caleb Banks out of the three
- 32:03names there, the one who got the most concerns just due to
- 32:06injuries in the past. But other than that, them three
- 32:09of the big three names in the combine so far for the defensive
- 32:13side of things, few names on the offence side of things.
- 32:17We've got Jeremiah Love as mentioned before, running back
- 32:19from Notre Dame, Garrett Nussite, Garrett Nuss Meyer,
- 32:27Nuss Meyer, QB from Louisiana LSUI will get that right.
- 32:31Yeah, Kate Kubnik as well, QB from Clemson and Malik Benson,
- 32:37who was a wide receiver from Oregon.
- 32:39Now we're going to get into the draft a bit in later episodes.
- 32:44I love the draft, but this year for me, there seems to be a nice
- 32:46little nice balance of players. Normally you'll find with draft
- 32:50classes, they'll be as a QB draft class.
- 32:52It's a running back draft class. It's a defensive draft class.
- 32:55This year seems to be over than over than like Mendoza, who's
- 33:01like DQB, the other QB seems to be all right.
- 33:06Nothing major, but I think I feel like a lot of the players
- 33:10are there's no massively standouts this year.
- 33:13There just seems to be like a lot of all right players, but I
- 33:16don't know how that goes this year.
- 33:17I'm sure I'm sure I will see with the with the with the scout
- 33:20and combine and stuff going into it.
- 33:22But there are a few of the big names anyway man, anything from
- 33:25you that stood out combine wise or I don't sort of just started
- 33:29as such so. Yeah, no, I think, you know,
- 33:33it's a difficult one because of of the time and it been on
- 33:36through the week and I I tend to like you, I know spoke about it
- 33:41off off the mic about tend to pick up more of the highlights
- 33:46towards the back end. I'll be honest.
- 33:47And so it'll be interesting to see how these players do
- 33:51perform. I'm always quite intrigued and I
- 33:53guess it maybe lends itself more to the draft, but the number of
- 33:57players from the different schools or colleges, whatever
- 33:59you want to refer to them as that are there.
- 34:03So even just look, you know, thinking that list that you just
- 34:05read out there, I think there was like two or three names from
- 34:08Clemson. You had Oregon on there, you got
- 34:11Texas A&M, you got Notre Dame, I think maybe the second highest
- 34:15drafted school. I think it is.
- 34:16They're definitely top three if I recall rightly.
- 34:20So it's, I'm always quite intrigued by that because so
- 34:24that's another part of college sports which I think a lot of UK
- 34:27fans don't know unless they're into it.
- 34:29You know, if you're just the average watcher of the NFL, you
- 34:31might not realise. But like college players do
- 34:35enter what's like the portal as they call it, to move schools.
- 34:38And that's not normally for academic reasons.
- 34:41It's to further the playing career, you know, and getting
- 34:44those starting Rep opportunities or they might perform really
- 34:48well. So might try and get to a bigger
- 34:49school and have a better chance of getting somewhere.
- 34:51So I think I'm excited to see the combine develop definitely
- 34:56and, and see how it performs. Research Carl at Texas A&M have
- 35:00the most combined invites with 13 players.
- 35:03Thank you for that. Which is it's quite significant,
- 35:07actually. It doesn't sound a lot out of
- 35:08319, but when you do your research and look at how many
- 35:11schools there are in the states sending players to the combine,
- 35:15it's obscene. It's a.
- 35:17It's a big old number. With with the combine, obviously
- 35:20we're only inviting the 319 players and again, 319 seems
- 35:25like a lot of players. But when in the flip side to
- 35:27what you just said there, Brad, if you put that to how many
- 35:29teams throughout how many? And we've got 53 man roster on
- 35:32each team, you know, across all the team, that's not that many
- 35:35people are getting invited to it.
- 35:37Over the years there has been a few names, big name players that
- 35:40didn't actually get an invite to the combine.
- 35:43And there's names such as Tyree Kill, Julian Edelman, Antonio
- 35:47Gates, Adam Thielen, James Harrison, 5 names there in
- 35:50particular didn't get invites to the the the combine.
- 35:54And arguably all 5 have strong Hall of Fame candidacy, like
- 36:01shouts because they've all not just been running out.
- 36:04Yeah, Like, no, not just doing one year out the NFL off the
- 36:08pop, the big name. So as much as the scouting
- 36:12scouting combines good doesn't necessarily mean that, you know,
- 36:16if you're not invited to it, it's not the end of your career.
- 36:17But going back on to what you say about the academic side of
- 36:20things there. But like for for people that
- 36:23don't know much about college football and the NFL in
- 36:26particular with this draft, if you're not, what would there be
- 36:29the equivalent to like a straight A star student over in
- 36:32the UK? If you're not doing that in
- 36:35America, you're not getting drafted, no matter how good you
- 36:37are because they will test you and you have to have like they
- 36:41have, they'll have you have backup plans for your life
- 36:45because the NFLS you can, you can make millions upon millions
- 36:49of dollars each year or your career can be over within two
- 36:52games. And then what you're going to do
- 36:53with your life and they try and kind of get you, you know, like
- 36:57set for life afterwards. And I quite like about it.
- 37:00I want to talk more about that when it comes to the draft
- 37:02episode. But there's so much that goes on
- 37:05off the field and so much that goes on academically.
- 37:09It, it the NFL is such a small bit.
- 37:11It's it's crazy. The whole the whole sport is, is
- 37:15just wild with what it goes with.
- 37:17But we'll keep your day with the scouting combine.
- 37:21And yeah, that's pretty much it in terms of that, Brad, anything
- 37:25from yourself before we before we fly off to what I'm really
- 37:27looking forward. So I'm not going to lie.
- 37:30I can't speak. I know I'm good for.
- 37:33Mine. Let's let's get to it.
- 37:35Come on. I can't speak right.
- 37:37We are here with what's going to be one of my favourite features
- 37:41for the next few weeks in particular until I start joining
- 37:44my sorrows in what my team is going to be performing like
- 37:47after the last weekend. But our rugby league results and
- 37:52discussions from the last week in particular.
- 37:55Now last week was a little bit different to a normal week in
- 38:01the rugby league as we had the World Club Challenge, which was
- 38:04the the team that won the Super League last year against the
- 38:07team that won the NRL. That is that would with how you
- 38:13pronounce it. The team I won the NRL would,
- 38:17would, would, would face each other alternates each year
- 38:20correctly. One one year it's in Australia,
- 38:22the year after that being the UK and vice versa.
- 38:26I believe so. I feel like I actually made a
- 38:29mistake. Last week and I was called out
- 38:32for it. I got myself confused on it.
- 38:34We're talking about Vegas now. Vegas games do happen, but I
- 38:37think I've just got myself cross wired and so, Oh yeah, World
- 38:40Club Challenge is happening in Vegas.
- 38:41It wasn't in Vegas. Whole KR playing, whole KR
- 38:44playing in Vegas, but it was the World Club Challenge.
- 38:48So yeah, so it was Paul KR, the Grand Final, winners of the
- 38:51Super League and Brisbane Broncos, grand final winners of
- 38:53the NRL playing against each other are actually whole FC's
- 38:57ground. So they turned the black and
- 38:59white stadium red and white, didn't they?
- 39:01All cherry known as to cherry white, that's Wigan red and
- 39:03white. And yeah, it was, it was a good
- 39:07game. It was a surprising game.
- 39:10See, I I wanted to start. I can't speak the first I can't
- 39:15speak anyway, I want to start this with York City are the best
- 39:18rugby team in the world right now.
- 39:21And then this happened this week, right?
- 39:23So just rewinding back to round one, York's York York Knights,
- 39:28right beat Hulk AR. So York Knights got promoted
- 39:31York Hulk AR won the Super League last year and York beat
- 39:35them in round one. And I'm Oh my, my camera's froze
- 39:40as well. And I'm now thinking to myself,
- 39:42right, so I lost you, I thought. So I text Brad saying this, this
- 39:49just means like York are now the best team in the country.
- 39:52And then all of a sudden whole KR beat in Brisbane and I text
- 39:57Brad like, no, they're the best team in the world.
- 40:01And then they come out and lose. Don't just lose small amount
- 40:06either. They get absolutely battered by
- 40:07Leeds Rhinos. We're going to get in terms of
- 40:08guys a little bit. Let's talk about the World Club
- 40:10Challenge. What do you think of the game,
- 40:12Brad? It was, it was a weird one.
- 40:16I didn't expect Hold, to be honest.
- 40:20I didn't expect them to win, you know, for starters, but I didn't
- 40:24expect them to take the sort of lead that they did against
- 40:27Brisbane. And then, you know, that that
- 40:30late comeback where you thought, right, is this where that
- 40:33Australian quality is going to shine through?
- 40:36And really, you know, typically, again, if you're not a rugby
- 40:39league fan, the Aussies are typically seen as the the
- 40:42better, better players, the better league, the the stronger
- 40:45league in terms of quality. And you you'd be thinking,
- 40:49right, Brisbane are going to do this, They're going to come back
- 40:51and they're going to they're going to win it.
- 40:52But they didn't like Hulke Allen, they held on and a
- 40:55deserved win to be fair. But I think that means we're now
- 40:59actually, despite me just saying that about Australia being
- 41:04arguably better. I think we've won the World Club
- 41:06Challenge 3 on the bounce now actually.
- 41:08We're three different sides as well.
- 41:10Yeah, I'm sure it's three different sides.
- 41:12So I've not got this research in front of me.
- 41:14I'm sure Cal's going to get to it.
- 41:15But if I remember rightly, we've got Hulk, we've got Saints and
- 41:18Wigan. I think of the last three years,
- 41:22winners of the World Club Challenge.
- 41:24I'm probably going to get shot and I'm just took a, a spin at
- 41:27that. But I'm, I'm almost certain I've
- 41:29seen that. So yeah, it's, it's a, it's a
- 41:32big win for UK rugby really. 100% like Australian rugby's
- 41:36always seen as like the the the most prestigious, like the top
- 41:41level. If you are, if you are playing
- 41:42in the Super League, you kind of want to get that contract to go
- 41:46play out in, in Australia. You want the nice weather.
- 41:48It's it's a lot more bigger money out there.
- 41:49Like the Australian rugby is like football in the UK, like
- 41:54soccer in the UK, like they get that's where the money is.
- 41:57If you play, you play in the bigger stadiums or they're
- 41:59selling out a lot more and, and things like that.
- 42:01Now it it it was a good game, but had its controversy around
- 42:08the one player that in my opinion, shouldn't have been on
- 42:12that field. And that's a man called Mikey
- 42:15Lewis. Now, I would love to know what
- 42:19your view is on this. And because I don't like the guy
- 42:23and I'll be I don't like how his presence is on the I think he's
- 42:26a great I'm going to put out there he's a great player.
- 42:28I don't like his presence on the field.
- 42:30I don't like his attitude on the field.
- 42:32And I think his day and what he did the week before when he's
- 42:36playing against when he's playing against York and he's
- 42:39flying his leg out and he's he's deliberately, deliberately going
- 42:44to what looks like Trip, but then ends up kicking a York
- 42:47player. I don't think he should have
- 42:50been allowed to play in that game.
- 42:51And I think the only reason he didn't get banned, I think if
- 42:55it's anybody else that's not as good quality player with him,
- 42:57they get banned. I don't like that to think that.
- 43:00What's your view on it, mate? I.
- 43:02Think by the letter of the law, it should be a red card.
- 43:06And I think it's I think it's meant to be a two game ban for
- 43:08tripping again. Don't hold me to that, but I'm
- 43:12sure that's what I was sort of reading quite a lot on Twitter
- 43:15that that's what it should have been.
- 43:16And it did go to the is it the tribunal or whatever they call
- 43:21it? You know, it goes to the
- 43:22disciplinary panel. And obviously they deemed it not
- 43:25not a ban. And like there's just that
- 43:27cynicism there, isn't there? That they wanted Michael Lewis,
- 43:30arguably one of the best players in the British game, playing on
- 43:34the grand stage of the sport. You know, it's like having it's
- 43:38like, you know, Kansas City go into the Super Bowl and Patrick
- 43:42Mahomes get in a ban getting suspended the game before it's
- 43:45it's like that sort of level. So I understand why they'd want
- 43:49that. But for me, if if that's what
- 43:52you want and you want to protect yourself against it, then just
- 43:54change the ruling so that your bans are just for domestic
- 43:58competition and and be done with it.
- 43:59And like then you don't have to try and hide you like hide the
- 44:03the corruption that we all are pretty much guaranteed.
- 44:06It happens in rugby league. Another reason for it's, you
- 44:10know, it's frustrating a lot of people and and it maybe not been
- 44:12the best run organisation in the world, but he shouldn't have
- 44:16been on the field. I can't speak.
- 44:17He shouldn't have been on the field.
- 44:19I can't speak get him off ref and yeah, no, I I fully agree
- 44:24like this. There needs to be some level of
- 44:28consistency about it. And if it had to be the way
- 44:30down, I thought they'd been a player from Brisbane that we'd
- 44:33have seen do that the week before and then they were
- 44:35playing. They've been up raw and I don't
- 44:38know, I just, I, I don't, I don't like it.
- 44:41I don't, I don't like it. I don't like him.
- 44:42You did a really good analogy there, like comparing Mikey
- 44:45Lewis to Patrick Mahomes because they're both grade A toilets and
- 44:49like matching when it comes down to it.
- 44:52So yeah, no, I agree, mate. I don't think you should run
- 44:54that field. Move on to the rest of the
- 44:56scores for the week. Now, one score here really
- 45:00shines out to me. And I'm going to purposely leave
- 45:02it out because I'm going to talk about this a bit more because
- 45:04it's a bit of an underdog story, but lead Rhinos and York a bit
- 45:08of a blow out there. 4614 scorecard says it all.
- 45:12Nice close one though for over up in the the West side of the
- 45:16country, St Ellen's and Lee Leopard's two point game.
- 45:19Exciting game. Watched a bit of the highlights
- 45:21on that exciting game from there.
- 45:23Love a close game. Always nice when it comes down
- 45:25to wire the next game to lose castle for Tigers.
- 45:30Sometimes I'm going to touch on it and if you are listen to the
- 45:33pod gain, we might focus more on the Cass Tigers game because
- 45:37it's a thing that's close to mine and Brad's hearts.
- 45:39I'm not going to lie. But this game absolute shambles.
- 45:45If Cass keep playing the way that they played against
- 45:47Toulouse this week, it's going to be a very, very long year.
- 45:51But Toulouse looked good. That full back of Toulouse,
- 45:58what's his name again? He's got Double Ball surname.
- 46:01But that Toulouse fullback just ran the game, Absolutely ran the
- 46:07game. It was.
- 46:10He was lethal, but yeah. I mean, to lose the credit where
- 46:15it's due, like, you know, cast didn't look anywhere near as
- 46:18good as they did the week before into Wigan.
- 46:20The thing that they did really good against Wigan last year was
- 46:23defend their absolute backsides off and defended really
- 46:27aggressively and really well. You know, they held them out for
- 46:29like 10 minutes on the try line, but you just didn't see that
- 46:32against Toulouse. It was it was the opposite
- 46:35really. But I think Toulouse look like a
- 46:36solid outfit. It'll be interesting to see how
- 46:39their season goes just generally against other competition
- 46:41because they've got two games and two wins at the minute.
- 46:43Yeah, the Toulouse Catalan game is going to be a good one for me
- 46:47because Catalan have been a strong outfit the past couple of
- 46:49years and we're going to, I purposely missed out the first
- 46:53game on this list for a reason, but it'd be nice to see that
- 46:57French Derby because they have been quite strong and Toulouse
- 47:01are looking that stronger of the two French teams this moment in
- 47:04time. But looking out at the Wigan
- 47:05Warriors Hull FC game, bit of a surprising result there for me
- 47:09because Hull again, normally a good defensive pack 34 six is
- 47:15not what you're kind of expecting to see when it comes
- 47:18down to it. I know they've just lost will
- 47:20price as well. He's out with an ACL injury.
- 47:23Feels like to talk about the NFL.
- 47:24They were two Acls in two weeks. But he's out for the for the the
- 47:28remainder of the season. So, you know, I wish him a
- 47:32speedy recovery and that's not nice to see big a big a big
- 47:36result there for Wigan. I'm not going to lie.
- 47:38It's it's, I think they not not struggled against CAS, but they
- 47:41struggled for 3/4 of the game against CAS to put points on the
- 47:44board. As you know, a big number of
- 47:46points and they just kind of scored towards that back end
- 47:48quite a bit. But 30346 is a is a big result.
- 47:52We're putting up putting up against that that whole team
- 47:57last game. Sorry, second last game would be
- 48:00the Huddersfield Giants and Wakey Trinity about waking
- 48:03Wildcats 1816 to Wakey there now Wakey bit of a bounce back.
- 48:09They beat the loss to to lose last week.
- 48:13We had a bit of a we were texting about this.
- 48:15Weren't we about to lose beating him and bouncing back to beat
- 48:20the giants only just beating those two point game to the
- 48:23kicking kicking this game that that kind of solidifies it.
- 48:26Huddersfield Dubs with one of the bottom teams.
- 48:30So I don't know what this strikes awake after last year
- 48:33being so consistent and and so exciting to watch.
- 48:36Is it that Dallow Powell curse of exciting, exciting, exciting
- 48:41and then the drop off? I don't know what to think about
- 48:45that and say drop off to have won this year that they would
- 48:47have won this week, but they've only won by two points in
- 48:49Huddersfield. So.
- 48:52It'll be an interesting one to see how they developed through
- 48:53the year, I think. I think you're right.
- 48:55It's I, I've shocked, I was really shocked last week against
- 48:58Toulouse, but it was like, all right, it's Week 1.
- 49:00It could be a surprise, you know.
- 49:01And then obviously Toulouse beat us.
- 49:04It's like, OK, maybe they are a good outfit, but then to only
- 49:06beat Huddersfield by two points. But yeah, it'd be, it'd be
- 49:11intriguing to see what happens with Wakefield through the
- 49:14season after what was a really successful year for him last
- 49:17year, wasn't it? You know?
- 49:18Yeah, it was. They did.
- 49:19They did really well and they were.
- 49:20They're unlucky to to not progress further than what they
- 49:23did, to be fair. But the last result of the week
- 49:26is the the big underdog shock story for me, and that's
- 49:30Bradford Bulls and Catalan Dragons.
- 49:32Bradford Bulls beating Catalan 2810.
- 49:34Now I spoke briefly a minute. I spoke a minute ago regarding
- 49:37like Catalan being kind of a decent team for the past couple
- 49:40of years. I mean, Bradford have again, a
- 49:43newly appointed, a newly promoted team into the Super
- 49:47League, don't have a lot of financial backing either.
- 49:50And to come out and not just be Catalan by two points, like the
- 49:55wakey Huddersfield game, to come out and put 18 points more than
- 49:59them is a solid result. And that puts kind of Bradford
- 50:03down as like, you know, we're here, we deserve to be in the
- 50:08Super League this year. Like we're going to put one of
- 50:11your normally favourite teams or favourite to win teams anyway,
- 50:16we're going to come out, we're going to show that we're here to
- 50:18we're here for the game boys. You know what I mean?
- 50:19Like that's not a good game. But is is there anything from
- 50:24this week from you, Brad like that's that stands out to you
- 50:27about anything else because Super League or even the world
- 50:30of China, it's. Always hard to tell, isn't it?
- 50:32It's always hard to tell in these early games because you
- 50:35know, teams are finding themselves out a little bit.
- 50:38Weak ones always like, oh, look at that and then Week 2 and Week
- 50:413 tend to settle it down a little bit.
- 50:44But I just think it's interesting when you look, if
- 50:45you looked at the Super League table now, you're top six, I'll
- 50:48just read it top to bottom. You've got Wigan at the top in
- 50:52second, you've got to lose third, you've got the Rhinos,
- 50:564th you've got Bradford and then you've got Lee and Warrington in
- 51:025th and 6th. Obviously Warrington have only
- 51:03played the one game so they could jump up with a win once
- 51:07that all balances out. But yeah, it's it's just
- 51:10exciting to get another exciting sport which obviously myself and
- 51:14and you are really, you know, really interested in.
- 51:17It's just exciting to get the season started and it's the sign
- 51:22that the the sunny days are coming and stood on the
- 51:24terraces. So yeah, I'm excited to see how
- 51:27the season goes. If you if you take to lose out
- 51:30of that, like, you know, is it top six that you just read out
- 51:32there? If you take to lose out of
- 51:33there, it screams like early 2000s, late 90s Super League
- 51:37table Bradford Bulls in there. You know, the only thing we're
- 51:42missing is the Halifax blue socks.
- 51:43You know what I mean? Like it's it's, it brings back
- 51:46them like them old, old school memories.
- 51:48But yes, the the sunny days are coming.
- 51:50I'm looking forward to I'm I'm actually going to the game this
- 51:52weekend and I'm super looking forward to it.
- 51:55I'm blessed. I'm taking my, my, my, my, my
- 51:57two daughters to to the game. So I'm there for the first time.
- 52:00So I'm looking forward to that. But yeah, we'll we'll be
- 52:04reporting back with more rugby league news as it comes in next
- 52:08week. So yeah, right, Brad, I think we
- 52:12need to move on now to another segment, another consistent
- 52:16segment here with the all balls, no philtre and that is going to
- 52:20be all the balls. So all the balls is here.
- 52:26Brad, will you just do me a favour?
- 52:28What is all of the balls? I'd be happy to explain Mr Zachy
- 52:33Boy. So all of the balls is where we
- 52:38touch on other areas of the world of sport.
- 52:42I almost weekly say where we touch on the balls and I'm
- 52:45pretty sure I have. But we are going to revisit or
- 52:49visit some of the sports that are happening around the world.
- 52:51Obviously we've got our rugby segment now as a bit of a new
- 52:55staple if you like, but just checking in on the latest news
- 52:59around the globe really. Happy days.
- 53:04Now I'm going to start with this one.
- 53:07That's all right mate. And I'm going to bring in
- 53:10there's, there's 4 balls involved, but 4 balls in the
- 53:14ring, should I say, and that's with these two boxes.
- 53:17It's very, very loose, very loose connection there.
- 53:20I try to bring in some sort of balls and connection.
- 53:26Anyway, testicles. I was talking about testicles.
- 53:29Yes, I was talking about testicles, but we have two boxes
- 53:34going back into the ring now. These are These are young
- 53:39whippersnappers stepping into the ring for a fierce battle at
- 53:43the prime age of 49 and 47. Netflix strikes a game with
- 53:50another as it's been branded carnival boxing match.
- 53:55Floyd the Money, Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao 2.0 Now
- 54:03Floyd coming in at 49 years old, Manny Pacquiao coming in at 47
- 54:08year old. They're coming back for a
- 54:09rematch. The last time these guys fought
- 54:12was in 2015 and it was Doug at the time, a very stale contest
- 54:16that happened five years too late.
- 54:17It's a cash grab. The first time they fought, it
- 54:20was Mayweather was reported to earn around $250 million while
- 54:26Pacquiao earned $150 million. And that's Per talks Bob on
- 54:31that. This is a shambles, if you ask
- 54:37me. This is.
- 54:39And if everyone watches this like they're going to do, myself
- 54:43included, then we're all mugs and we're all just feeding into
- 54:47Netflix's money pick that they're just throwing at
- 54:51fighters to just to do what they want to do.
- 54:53The rules are yet to be confirmed other than the fact
- 54:57that they're wearing 10 oz gloves and it's going to be 12-3
- 54:59minute rounds. And, and quite honestly, I think
- 55:02they need to stop doing this. They've done this with Tyson and
- 55:06Jake Paul. They've done this with Anthony
- 55:08Joshua and Jake Paul. They're just getting the old
- 55:12names that are guaranteed to bring the views in.
- 55:14And we all know it's going to be a shit fight.
- 55:16We all know it's going to be stale.
- 55:18We all know it's going to be nowhere near as exciting as what
- 55:24they should have been back in 2010 or 2000s or whenever.
- 55:27It's just not going to be good. The the probably 1 bonus of it
- 55:31is that it's been held at one of the coolest venues in the world,
- 55:34which is the Sphere in Vegas. Other than that it's it's yeah
- 55:41researched Carl Cooney actually a surprise not held in Saudi
- 55:43Arabia. So am I with her?
- 55:45But I think they they even look at this fight and going yeah I
- 55:47don't want this at Riyadh season like no I'm all right.
- 55:50So I want to get you fit boxes in I.
- 55:53Just remember I remember like being got old.
- 55:57Would I have been like a 17 year old kid working part time, you
- 56:01know, whilst at college selling suits?
- 56:03And my boss at the time, he was an ex professional boxer, you
- 56:07know, not big time or anything, but he, you know, he had that as
- 56:10a career in his in his 20s for a little while.
- 56:13And I wasn't really into boxing at the time.
- 56:15I do enjoy watching a, you know, a fight now and then now, and I
- 56:19don't pretend to be a massive avid fan of it watching it all,
- 56:22but I'll watch the big fights generally.
- 56:26But I remember constantly going on about Mayweather and
- 56:30Pacquiao, like, you know, this fight's got to happen.
- 56:32It was, they were basically seen as the two top pound for pound
- 56:35fighters. And it was like, it's got to
- 56:39happen, it's got to happen, it's got to happen.
- 56:40And then it didn't until like you said, then in 2015, it was
- 56:45just too little too late then. And I and I watched that match.
- 56:48I remember watching that fight. And will I watch this one?
- 56:51Yeah, I probably will. Will it bore me?
- 56:53Yeah, it probably will. It's just mad and like have you
- 56:57seen slightly different but related you're talking about
- 57:01obviously the the old fighters and stuff on Netflix.
- 57:04Have you seen the Ronda Rousey MMA one that's happening as
- 57:09well? And it's so it's not actually
- 57:11sanctioned by is it total knockout or whatever it is.
- 57:15It's not actually. It's a Netflix thing and it's
- 57:18sanctioned by is it MVP? Yeah, which is, which is Jake
- 57:22Paul's promotion, Yeah. So they're sanctioning the fight
- 57:26and it's Netflix exclusive. It's, I can't remember who she's
- 57:29fighting for the life of me now, but it's again, it's like an old
- 57:32rival sort of person. It's just it's getting silly
- 57:36like. It is.
- 57:38I know why they're doing it, but it's just silly.
- 57:40The thing is, and it must be so upsetting to be up and coming
- 57:44box around a box that's been around for a while.
- 57:47That's not kind of necessarily made the big naming lights that
- 57:50always I won't say a journeyman, but I would say like they've
- 57:52been around long enough to be on the card of a big like say Fury
- 57:56fight, for instance, but not not main event to see the likes of
- 58:00misfits and MVP bringing these events and because of their fan
- 58:05base through the likes of YouTube and the likes of
- 58:08everything else and Netflix throwing the money into it,
- 58:12bringing in like all these views and earning all this money like
- 58:16the the the misfits fighters and the the MVP fighters were really
- 58:23overpaid And like Jake Paul, the the guy's absolute douchebag.
- 58:27But one thing he's always said is I'm, you know, if I'm going
- 58:29to book these fighters, I'm going to pay them fairly.
- 58:31Like even Dana White was this big kind of dispute about the
- 58:35payment side of things. But like I, I feel like it must
- 58:39be better kicking teeth for these proper boxing fans that
- 58:41see the likes of Pacquiao, Mayweather, friends coming in
- 58:44being like these guys have done nothing for five years.
- 58:47They've just been spending all the money and now, now they want
- 58:50a bit of a pension coming in at 200, three, $100 million coming
- 58:53in. These guys that have been
- 58:54fighting their asses off to try and get the name for themselves
- 58:58might earn 50 grand a fight, which is a lot of money.
- 59:00I'm not saying it's not a lot of money at all.
- 59:02I'm just, I just think, you know, but then again, it's what
- 59:06brings the views in and we're the sucker to the system.
- 59:08But we're going to sit there and we're going to watch it.
- 59:10I I'm the same as you. I would be more inclined to to
- 59:17watch the big Dane fights. I'd be more inclined to watch
- 59:20him rather than week in, week out and did fight like this.
- 59:22I'm going to come in and go. Yeah, well, watch it and play
- 59:26into the system. I think I'm one of those though
- 59:29that would probably, you know, it's going to be a late fight,
- 59:32isn't it? It's in the States.
- 59:34I'll tell you now, I won't be watching it live.
- 59:35I'll be watching it like A7 AM, 8:00 AM when I wake up.
- 59:39But that that's just me. You know, for a fight like this,
- 59:42if it's a big fight, I'd do it, but I'm not.
- 59:46I don't think I'm staying up until the early hours for this
- 59:48one. No, no, I agree.
- 59:52Right. Well, that's my all the balls.
- 59:55What about yourself, my mum? What have you got for us this
- 59:58week? I guess it's something we've
- 1:00:01discussed in different ways over the last couple of weeks.
- 1:00:06You know, it's probably the biggest sporting event at the
- 1:00:09moment considering the amount of athletes involved and the
- 1:00:13nation's involved, and that's obviously the Winter Olympics.
- 1:00:15So that came to a conclusion. It actually ended up being
- 1:00:19Britain's most successful Winter Olympics ever.
- 1:00:22I think we finished 15th in total.
- 1:00:25But was it 3 golds? Was it And 1 silver and one
- 1:00:30bronze. So total of 5.
- 1:00:32So if you're not sure how the Olympics works, it's not.
- 1:00:34Your rankings at the end isn't based on total medals, it's just
- 1:00:37purely based on golds. Then it's silvers as like a
- 1:00:40tiebreaker, etcetera, etcetera. So we came 15th with those 3
- 1:00:44golds, but really successful for GB, which we touched on last
- 1:00:48week. You top, you top, and then
- 1:00:51you've got Norway in first with 18 gold.
- 1:00:52You got the USA second with 12 and then the Netherlands and
- 1:00:57Italy both finishing at 10, but Netherlands getting that
- 1:01:00tiebreaker, taking them to 3rd. Now we've touched on a variety
- 1:01:04of stories from the Winter Olympics and there's there's
- 1:01:06tonnes of them, but it's actually won.
- 1:01:09I spotted just yesterday actually, and I won't lie to
- 1:01:13you, it welded me up a little bit.
- 1:01:16So the USA won the ice hockey gold medal at the weekend and it
- 1:01:27was for them. That's like it's a big thing,
- 1:01:29isn't it? For that's a big medal that the
- 1:01:31USA team want to win. Now the thing that got me
- 1:01:34emotional wasn't that the USA wouldn't, but one of the one of
- 1:01:38the team mates, Johnny Gouge, I want to pronounce it right.
- 1:01:43Goudreau. I think it is Goudreau.
- 1:01:46Sorry, Goudreau. So a French spelling apologies
- 1:01:48for that. So Johnny Goudreau was killed a
- 1:01:54little while back, not not too long, but by a drunk driver.
- 1:01:59And at the end of the game, the team were all gathering together
- 1:02:04for their gold medal picture. And a couple of the the skaters
- 1:02:08went off and they grabbed his kids and brought his two kids on
- 1:02:13to the ice and had his jersey and laid out in front of him.
- 1:02:17And and they were part of their like official sort of gold medal
- 1:02:20winning picture. And I was just, I was like eyes
- 1:02:23full red light sobbing mess, just looking at it.
- 1:02:26Just things, things with kids and stuff.
- 1:02:28They just get me. So it really stood out to me
- 1:02:30and, you know, you know, again, love, love to to his family and,
- 1:02:35and best wishes to them and and congratulations to the USA ice
- 1:02:38hockey team. But yeah, I just thought it was
- 1:02:40just a really beautiful gesture and it just, yeah, caught,
- 1:02:43caught my eye. Definitely agree yeah, stuff
- 1:02:46like always gets me. I'm a I'm a I'm a sucker for for
- 1:02:49things like that. And I I the respect is a big
- 1:02:52thing for me and and that's that's shows how much you are in
- 1:02:56May meant to people. So but yeah, it's really nice to
- 1:02:59see and Congrats to USA and Congrats to to GB on on what
- 1:03:02were the most successful Winter Olympics that we've had.
- 1:03:04So yeah, that's that's good to see.
- 1:03:07That's good to have. So that was our all other balls
- 1:03:10for this week. We're now going to move on to a
- 1:03:13segment which I quite enjoy my man, and we're going to do the
- 1:03:18stats that sound fake. So this week we're doing a NFL
- 1:03:22combine stat OK, so if it's your first time listing, we've done
- 1:03:26this a few Times Now. Don't worry wives, we're just
- 1:03:29coming back. But we're saving a couple of
- 1:03:31them towards the season, right? But stats that sound fake, There
- 1:03:34are three stats that are going to be on the screen in just a
- 1:03:37second. I'll read all three of them out
- 1:03:38between myself and Brad. We're going to decide which one
- 1:03:42is the real stat. Now we might both have different
- 1:03:46views on this, but we'll go from there.
- 1:03:48So starts that sound fake. Guess the real NFL combine
- 1:03:53start. The first one is If you want to
- 1:03:56see this by the way, head over to our YouTube page.
- 1:03:58See it there. The first one is the highest
- 1:04:02ever Wunderlich score at the combine was recorded by a
- 1:04:07kicker. The highest ever Wunderlich
- 1:04:11score was at the combine was recorded by a kicker.
- 1:04:16So if you're not sure what the Wunderlix score is for people
- 1:04:18listening, it's the basically it's the intelligence test if
- 1:04:21I'm, if I'm thinking rightly, Carl, if you can confirm here.
- 1:04:25So it's just sort of measures their their general IQ aptitude,
- 1:04:29just general intelligence, if you like.
- 1:04:31So what Carl's basically saying there is the most intelligent
- 1:04:35person at the combine is a kicker.
- 1:04:41The second one is only one player before the year 2000 has
- 1:04:46run a sub 4.3 second 40 yard dash.
- 1:04:50So only one player before the year 2000 has run a sub 4.3
- 1:04:56second 40 yard dash and the last one.
- 1:04:59Confirmed the the record for the 40 yard dash.
- 1:05:01Is it 4.22? It's somewhere like that.
- 1:05:05Just find that for me while while we read out this last one.
- 1:05:09And the last one is the NFL scouting combine has only ever
- 1:05:12been held in Indianapolis in Indianapolis in Indiana.
- 1:05:18Yeah, so, so, yeah. So the combine's been at
- 1:05:22Indianapolis definitely for a while.
- 1:05:25Carl's confirmed that the 40 yard dash was 4.21.
- 1:05:29That's right. I think, yeah, it was 4.22.
- 1:05:32A little while. It's been broken a few times
- 1:05:34over the last sort of decade I think.
- 1:05:38Yeah. I feel like but I'm just trying
- 1:05:42to think where it was before and then so what's the most?
- 1:05:48Yeah. So for me, we know, we know
- 1:05:52research Carl personally. We, we feed him his biscuits
- 1:05:56with his lock to Wayne's cage, you know, just make him work a
- 1:05:58bit harder, right? And I know how he feels about
- 1:06:03kickers. And that one, the, the that's a,
- 1:06:08that's a research Carl stat. Is that for me?
- 1:06:11Is that the, you know, he, he walked around with that with
- 1:06:14pride. It would surprise me if I had it
- 1:06:15on a badge. You know that the kicker's got
- 1:06:17the highest score in a NFL combine.
- 1:06:21So you're saying you think that one's real?
- 1:06:24Well, I'm talking to the top 2 I think.
- 1:06:26I think the Sky combine has been Indianapolis for like, I want to
- 1:06:31say something daft like 13 years or something, right?
- 1:06:35Yeah, I feel like it's not always been there.
- 1:06:37No, I know it's been there a while.
- 1:06:40Right. But I think it's the I just try.
- 1:06:43I'm just trying to think. Pre 2000 you didn't really have
- 1:06:46speed demons did you? Again, I could be wrong.
- 1:06:49If I'm wrong, let us know in the comments what you guys think.
- 1:06:51Pause the video now. Pause it.
- 1:06:53Let us know. Right?
- 1:06:55Can we start again? So, but what?
- 1:07:00What are you feeling towards here?
- 1:07:04I'm almost certain. So I'm almost certain the NFL
- 1:07:09scouting combine has been somewhere else.
- 1:07:16Yeah. So I'm ruling that one out.
- 1:07:19Yeah, research cow. Just get getting ready for our
- 1:07:24chat. We've got a little chat down
- 1:07:25there. Don't post it in yet, but I want
- 1:07:26to know if if we're wrong, if we're right.
- 1:07:30Sorry, it's been, it has been somewhere else.
- 1:07:32How many years has it been Indianapolis Fox?
- 1:07:34I think it's, I want to say it's about 13 years or something that
- 1:07:37far, but don't post it in yet because I want to give anything
- 1:07:40away. I'm sure the kicker is the
- 1:07:43smartest person I've failed. That's my vote.
- 1:07:48So you're saying that's the real combined?
- 1:07:50Start. That's the real combined start.
- 1:07:52The highest ever Wonderlic score at the NFL Combine was recorded
- 1:07:55by a kicker. That's mine.
- 1:07:58I think it's a double bluff. I think it's a double bluff and
- 1:08:01I'm going to go only one player before 2000 has run a sub 4.3
- 1:08:06because I just feel like athletes have become more
- 1:08:10athletic. So yeah, so Cal let us know the
- 1:08:15right, the, the true start, the real start for us.
- 1:08:19Let's see who we've got. Silent drum rolls just while
- 1:08:24Callum scrolls away typing. The real start was B, yeah.
- 1:08:35That's me, baby. Congrats.
- 1:08:37So the only. One player before 2000 has run a
- 1:08:40sub 4.3 second 40 yard dash and the double bluff was wrong.
- 1:08:47I fell hotline and sinker for it.
- 1:08:50The person was. By the way, if you are
- 1:08:51interested, Rondell Mendez from Eastern KY in 1999 run a 4.24
- 1:08:58and the NFL Combine has been held Indianapolis since 1987.
- 1:09:01So I was way out and I was way out.
- 1:09:05Oh wow, the highest ever Wonderlic score was by a punter.
- 1:09:09Technically. Technically, he kicks a ball, so
- 1:09:12he's a kicker. Not not by position.
- 1:09:15Title He's not, pal. Damn it.
- 1:09:17Damn it. Fucking technicalities.
- 1:09:22Oh dear. Well, I enjoyed that.
- 1:09:24I enjoyed that bit. That's nice.
- 1:09:26I say stats that sound fake, I always enjoy them.
- 1:09:31Okay right mate we're going to move on to our final part of the
- 1:09:36show and that is Carlos Conundrum.
- 1:09:39So we have Carlos Conundrum last week to do and then going into
- 1:09:44next week. So last weeks Carlos Conundrum
- 1:09:47was, in terms of annual value, which NFL players signed the
- 1:09:51biggest free agency contract in NFL history.
- 1:09:55And how fitting for this show because the answer is now, well,
- 1:10:01going to be another free agent very, very soon.
- 1:10:03And that's Mr Kirk Cousins. So yeah, last week's Carl's
- 1:10:08Conundrum, the answer is Kurt Cousins.
- 1:10:09So if you got involved with that, if you let us know and you
- 1:10:11sent us a message or commented anywhere, there's your answer.
- 1:10:14So thank you very much for getting involved.
- 1:10:17He's soon to be another free agent.
- 1:10:19See where he's going to go there.
- 1:10:20See what, what kind of wage he's going to get next time round,
- 1:10:24right? Carl's conundrum for this week,
- 1:10:25mate. So your Carl's conundrum is
- 1:10:29which player holds the record for the most reps of the bench
- 1:10:34press at the NFL scouting combined with 51 reps?
- 1:10:38So which player holds the record for the most reps of the bench
- 1:10:42press at the NFL scouting combined with 51 reps?
- 1:10:48Let us know guys, comment, send us a message.
- 1:10:51Do what you want to do. This is going to be put on a
- 1:10:52social as well. Let us know what you think.
- 1:10:55Ask your friends as well. Get them to let us know what you
- 1:10:57think. Brad, anything pushing out
- 1:11:00toward positional wise? I ain't got a clue player wise
- 1:11:02but positional wise what you thinking?
- 1:11:06Got to be like a big boy lineman also like AD end type sort of
- 1:11:12figure for me. I'm thinking I've got someone in
- 1:11:14mind. Yeah, I've got someone in mind.
- 1:11:17But if I I wouldn't put money on it, I would not put money on
- 1:11:21this one. No, same tough one, this one,
- 1:11:24but it'd be interesting to see who it is.
- 1:11:26So once again, which player holds the record for the most
- 1:11:29reps of the bench press at the NFL scouting combine with the 51
- 1:11:33reps? Do like that.
- 1:11:34I do like the fact that we've got an NFL scouting one there.
- 1:11:37But yeah, so let us know, guys. Let us know everything from off
- 1:11:42that. Let us know what you think as
- 1:11:43well, right? That brings us to it shorter
- 1:11:48show than normal liked it, but it's been it's been fun.
- 1:11:52So guys, just do me a favour. If you have enjoyed this show,

- 1:12:14And I wouldn't mind getting some feedback off you guys.
- 1:12:18We're potentially looking at starting a bit of a fantasy
- 1:12:21Football League next year, but we need some people to to to go
- 1:12:25up against. So if you guys are interested in
- 1:12:27getting into a fantasy football free to play, let us know.

- 1:12:34people to come and join at some point.
- 1:12:36But yeah, we're going to look at getting that sorted out and set
