- 0:29Speaker 1: We hear about a few of the crews two thousand
- 0:31Speaker 1: seventeen hunting seasons, and we laugh a lot. All right, folks,
- 0:47Speaker 1: welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 0:50Speaker 1: by sit gear, and as I just mentioned, today's podcast
- 0:54Speaker 1: was recorded from our two thousand eighteen Iowa shed camp
- 0:57Speaker 1: this past weekend. And joining me in are my hunting
- 1:00Speaker 1: buddies Peter Lynch and Ross Houseman, who you've heard on
- 1:04Speaker 1: the podcast before and on my good Pale and founder
- 1:07Speaker 1: of hunter a Maps Ben Harshine. But before we get
- 1:10Speaker 1: to the contents of this week's episode, I want to
- 1:12Speaker 1: drop a quick announcement here. If you're listening to this
- 1:15Speaker 1: right around the times podcast launched um, I've got some
- 1:18Speaker 1: quick news to share. This Saturday, March seventeen, two thousand eighteen.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna be recording a live podcast at the Ohio
- 1:26Speaker 1: Deer and Turkey Expo in Columbus, Ohio from three to
- 1:29Speaker 1: five pm at the Sick Gear Booth. So that's this Saturday,
- 1:33Speaker 1: March two, eighteen, at the Ohio Deer and Turkey Expo
- 1:37Speaker 1: at the Sick of Gear Booth. And the plan is
- 1:39Speaker 1: to have a panel of guests for that podcast, including
- 1:41Speaker 1: guys like Adam Hayes, Ben Rising, Johnny Eberheart, and probably
- 1:46Speaker 1: a few more. And we're gonna have free beer. You
- 1:48Speaker 1: heard that right. We're gonna free beer. We're gonna have
- 1:50Speaker 1: a bunch of giveaways for some awesome sick of gear. Um,
- 1:53Speaker 1: we're gonna have time for some Q and A. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a really good good time. So
- 1:58Speaker 1: be there if you can. Guess said three to five
- 2:01Speaker 1: pm at the sit Ka Gear Booth. That's March seventeen,
- 2:04Speaker 1: two thousand eighteen. Um, and this is in Columbus, Ohio.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And if that's not enough, the party is going to
- 2:11Speaker 1: continue after that at the back Country Hunters and Anglers
- 2:14Speaker 1: Pint Night happening that night at Wolf's Ridge Brewing, which
- 2:19Speaker 1: is also in Columbus, Ohio, and that's gonna be from
- 2:21Speaker 1: six to ten pm. And there, you know, we're gonna
- 2:24Speaker 1: have a bunch of fellow hunters and anglers getting together
- 2:27Speaker 1: for a good time. There's gonna be some raffles I
- 2:29Speaker 1: hear for more Sitka gear, some auctions, maybe even some
- 2:32Speaker 1: more free swag, and you know, the chance to get
- 2:35Speaker 1: some good beer and good food and talk hunting with
- 2:37Speaker 1: a bunch of buddies myself, some of my friends from
- 2:40Speaker 1: Sick Gear, and who knows what else. I just know
- 2:42Speaker 1: it's gonna be a really good time. So again, it's
- 2:45Speaker 1: gonna be a blast, and I hope to see you
- 2:47Speaker 1: all there. And now for this podcast itself, As I
- 2:50Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, this is just a really really fun podcast.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Um it's more or less just a big BS session.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But man, did we have a blast. We talked through
- 2:59Speaker 1: the shed hunting weekend, We told a lot of funny stories,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and then we moved into the two thousand seventeen hunting
- 3:06Speaker 1: season for each of these guys too, so we dissect
- 3:08Speaker 1: some of their successes, we discussed some of the mistakes.
- 3:12Speaker 1: We dive down all sorts of weird rabbit holes too.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So if you're in a mood for a good laugh
- 3:16Speaker 1: and some hunting camp vibes. I think you're really gonna
- 3:19Speaker 1: enjoy this one, so let's pause briefly for our Sitka
- 3:22Speaker 1: gear story of the day, and then we'll get right
- 3:24Speaker 1: into the main event. I hope you guys enjoyed this
- 3:26Speaker 1: one as much as we did recording it, because man,
- 3:29Speaker 1: it was an absolute blast. For this week's sick Of story,
- 3:33Speaker 1: we're joined by Chase Rutherford, who tells us about getting
- 3:35Speaker 1: to tag along on a big horn hunt. Um. It's
- 3:39Speaker 1: a ten day hunt. UM. I was filming Patrick scrogan
- 3:43Speaker 1: Um on his Rocky Mountain big horn hunt Wyoming. Patrick
- 3:47Speaker 1: was in the Army and lost his leg in a
- 3:49Speaker 1: helicopter crash, so it was a very tough hunt for him. UM.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But we rode in nine and a half hours into
- 3:57Speaker 1: the coolest terrain UM and the thoroughfare, which is the
- 4:01Speaker 1: most remote, the most remote place in the Lower forty eight.
- 4:05Speaker 1: We had hunted every day for four days and we
- 4:09Speaker 1: ended up seeing some rams. Patrick ended up missing one.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It was an emotional day, but we kept pushing and
- 4:16Speaker 1: on the eighth day we set out at two am
- 4:19Speaker 1: in the morning and headed up straight up this crazy mountainside.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Our horses were slipping and it was crazy with the
- 4:25Speaker 1: possibilities of dying. Um. We finally got to the top
- 4:29Speaker 1: and just as the light hit the top of the mountain,
- 4:32Speaker 1: the ram showed itself and that's when Patrick got off
- 4:37Speaker 1: the horse and we were able to crawl up and
- 4:38Speaker 1: he made a three fifty yards shot. Um. It was
- 4:41Speaker 1: really emotional seeing Patrick accomplished this hunt. It's something I'll
- 4:45Speaker 1: never forget. On Chase his hunt, he was wearing sick
- 4:48Speaker 1: as jet stream jacket. If you'd like to create the
- 4:51Speaker 1: sickest story of your own, or to learn more about
- 4:53Speaker 1: Sitky's technical hunting apparel, visit sitky gear dot com. What
- 4:58Speaker 1: are we gonna talk about? I assume we would talk
- 5:01Speaker 1: about what we've just been doing. Just chiropractic chiropractic best practices. Right,
- 5:08Speaker 1: does your tracker try call on emotion? Some things? Just
- 5:12Speaker 1: sat still time because there was a startin amount of
- 5:18Speaker 1: time and we were not walking because I did find anything.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We sat down by the creek map. Yeah, yeah, that
- 5:25Speaker 1: would be pretty slick. Yeah, we're walking a whole time. Well,
- 5:28Speaker 1: according to this, you guys are sitting in your ass
- 5:32Speaker 1: A few minutes in a time, so we're recording podcast. Now.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired hun podcast, brought to you by
- 5:41Speaker 1: Sitka Gear. And what we're talking about is the Iowa
- 5:47Speaker 1: Shed Camp of two thousand eighteen for shed rally. We're
- 5:52Speaker 1: down here and an unknown region of Iowa, and we've
- 6:00Speaker 1: got Ross Hassman, Haman Hassman. Ross Hassa is here when
- 6:08Speaker 1: we do this every time, we have Peter Lynch, he's
- 6:14Speaker 1: a chiropractor number two. Chiropractor number one was Ross Hassman, Peter,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and that's not all of them. And yeah, we lost Corky, Yes,
- 6:26Speaker 1: we lost Corky. And then we also have been Harshein,
- 6:31Speaker 1: who was a chiropractic recipient. Yeah, that was like my
- 6:35Speaker 1: tip for hosting. You want do you want to describe
- 6:37Speaker 1: what just happened here? So obviously in the presence of
- 6:41Speaker 1: some fine chiropractors here, and I've just been thinking all day, man,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I gotta get adjusted again. And when you know, come
- 6:48Speaker 1: in here and I feel great. I think my cold
- 6:52Speaker 1: is gone because of you. Well, he's like, and I
- 6:54Speaker 1: literally just scheduled, right, I just scheduled my first So
- 6:59Speaker 1: there we go. I want to give you guys a chance.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Do either one of you want to promote your chiropractic
- 7:04Speaker 1: practices to the fellow Iowa residence. This is your one
- 7:08Speaker 1: and only chance. Oh yeah, why not. This is the
- 7:12Speaker 1: biggest podcast in the world, So we'll do uh to
- 7:17Speaker 1: Gaywa try State's chiropractic Dr. Peter Lynch, All right there,
- 7:20Speaker 1: thanks mart Yeah. Ross, He's like, nope, come on, he
- 7:27Speaker 1: doesn't want to. He doesn't want Peo to look him
- 7:29Speaker 1: up from wre he haunts exactly. Thank you, Peter. Too
- 7:33Speaker 1: much info. So we're down here in Iowa shed hunting.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It's shed Rally, and Ben, the founder of Untera and
- 7:42Speaker 1: a white Tail Properties land specialists as well, was so
- 7:45Speaker 1: very very kind to hostess on his property. Extremely grateful.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Thank you. That was pretty incredible guys for coming down,
- 7:53Speaker 1: Thanks for letting us come down. Yeah, so we spent
- 7:55Speaker 1: the day shed hunting. We did a lot of walking,
- 7:57Speaker 1: it was It was a fun day. So I thought,
- 8:01Speaker 1: I thought, since some of us are still here together,
- 8:04Speaker 1: we could drink some beer and coffee and talk about
- 8:06Speaker 1: the day, talk about shed rally, talk about the shed hunting,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and then maybe catch up a little bit on However,
- 8:11Speaker 1: when Seasons went to saince. None of you guys have
- 8:13Speaker 1: been on the podcast. You've all been on the podcast before,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but none of you have been on since this last season,
- 8:18Speaker 1: so no one knows what happened. So Ben, do you
- 8:23Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit about We've talked about
- 8:26Speaker 1: shed Rally a little bit, but um what what what
- 8:29Speaker 1: was the gist some people may not have followed today?
- 8:31Speaker 1: You know, shed Rally is the um the world's largest
- 8:37Speaker 1: shed hunt where anybody that wants to go on a
- 8:41Speaker 1: scavenger hunt and find uh antlers. You know white tails
- 8:45Speaker 1: cast their antlers every winter, UM, and you go in
- 8:49Speaker 1: and look for him. And it doesn't matter if you
- 8:53Speaker 1: know you're a you're a seasoned hunter, or you've got
- 8:57Speaker 1: people that never intend on killing an animal, but they
- 9:01Speaker 1: still want to get out and enjoy mother nature. I mean,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you know, we've had we had several people with us
- 9:05Speaker 1: today that they don't ever want to hunt, but they
- 9:07Speaker 1: really enjoyed themselves. So that's what shed Rally is all about.
- 9:10Speaker 1: It's been there was a campaign originally created by white
- 9:14Speaker 1: Tail Properties and uh the idea is to you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: get get out there, um, you know, enjoy creation and
- 9:21Speaker 1: use uh the hashtag as you're posting on social media,
- 9:24Speaker 1: whether it's you know, Facebook or Instagram, hashtag shed Rally,
- 9:28Speaker 1: all your pictures and it's just it's just a big
- 9:31Speaker 1: event for camaraderie and to celebrate the animal that we
- 9:34Speaker 1: all love, you know. And I guess it's you know,
- 9:36Speaker 1: not even just white tails and mule deer too and
- 9:38Speaker 1: elk and whatnot. And I saw a lot of elk
- 9:40Speaker 1: sheds actually to on social media too, so um, yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's that's what it was all about. And I decided, hey,
- 9:47Speaker 1: why don't um we just get a big party together
- 9:50Speaker 1: and go hit this this new farm that I've access to,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you know, And that was We had a great day.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Started a little slow, right, I was worried. Uh, yesterday
- 10:00Speaker 1: we were walking somewhere and the three of me, Ross,
- 10:04Speaker 1: Peter and Corey and Adam was with us. At one point,
- 10:09Speaker 1: Kendalls with us for a little bit, and um, we
- 10:12Speaker 1: didn't find a single thing. So we started worrying, if
- 10:15Speaker 1: this doesn't go any better, we're gonna have to call
- 10:17Speaker 1: this friend rally instead of shed Rally and just give
- 10:20Speaker 1: me a bunch of pictures of his high fiving and
- 10:21Speaker 1: huggang and this is a good time. Having friends. But luckily,
- 10:26Speaker 1: uh luckily some sheds got involved today too. So how
- 10:32Speaker 1: there's a little big group of us. There was there's twelve, right, twelve,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I think there was twelve, Yeah, including Jack. He was
- 10:37Speaker 1: the youngest one, my boy, he was two years older
- 10:40Speaker 1: than his first shed hunt. So um, we we had
- 10:45Speaker 1: a great tribe. You guys came down and and uh
- 10:49Speaker 1: um Dan you know, Damn Zari brought Sarah. Um he
- 10:53Speaker 1: bailed on us for the podcast. Yeah. Man, that guy's busy,
- 10:57Speaker 1: he is. He's kind of a big deal. Yeah, he's
- 11:00Speaker 1: at he big leagued us, you know, big league us.
- 11:04Speaker 1: But no, we uh um. We started the day off.
- 11:08Speaker 1: We all got together and we rallied up on top
- 11:10Speaker 1: of this big this big ridge. So we're hunting. Basically,
- 11:13Speaker 1: this farm lays out as a it's a it's a
- 11:15Speaker 1: big farm, but there's a lot of farm, a lot
- 11:18Speaker 1: of corn, there's a lot of tillable ground on it.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So we got up on top of this ridge today
- 11:22Speaker 1: is on the cornfield, and rallied and had some doughnuts
- 11:25Speaker 1: and laid the map out and made a game plan,
- 11:28Speaker 1: kind of zoned it out. I think we had three teams, right,
- 11:31Speaker 1: three teams. We all scattered out and uh um, we didn't.
- 11:37Speaker 1: We covered some pretty good ground until we found that
- 11:39Speaker 1: first one, which was you you broke the ice and
- 11:42Speaker 1: then soon after Ryan matched it up. Yes, we we
- 11:46Speaker 1: walked a lot of good looking stuff. We walked that
- 11:47Speaker 1: big ridge top down, then we went to the bottom,
- 11:50Speaker 1: walked a bunch of grassy terraces and buffer strips, and
- 11:53Speaker 1: I kept thinking, man, we were seeing a lot of
- 11:55Speaker 1: signed there was we were all over edge, you know,
- 11:58Speaker 1: we were just walking all kinds of sick stuff. Where
- 12:01Speaker 1: it transitions from you know, your classic timber, then you've
- 12:04Speaker 1: got a bunch of regrowth and grasses, and then you've
- 12:06Speaker 1: got your your crop fields and and a lot of
- 12:08Speaker 1: times those deers they're browsing overnight, going in the field
- 12:13Speaker 1: for a little while and eat and then go and
- 12:15Speaker 1: lay down in those buffer strips and come back in
- 12:17Speaker 1: and a lot of times that's where you find your sheds. Right,
- 12:19Speaker 1: We come around a good bit of that today until
- 12:21Speaker 1: we found their first one. So that that first one
- 12:25Speaker 1: was that was the icebreaker though, Yeah, we I was.
- 12:29Speaker 1: We you know, when you when you when you've got
- 12:31Speaker 1: such a big group, lots of times we have to
- 12:33Speaker 1: kind of planet out. Okay, you take this line, you
- 12:35Speaker 1: take that line, you take that line. Otherwise it just
- 12:38Speaker 1: be a mess of people scrambling around. So you had
- 12:41Speaker 1: jack on your back, so you kind of took the
- 12:43Speaker 1: top of the field, and so my line was I
- 12:45Speaker 1: was gonna walk just inside or just outside the edge
- 12:47Speaker 1: of all these points that were coming out. Just it
- 12:49Speaker 1: was almost if you took your fingers and stuck four
- 12:51Speaker 1: fingers out um parallel, that's kind of what this field
- 12:55Speaker 1: and finger structure looked like. So I was walking all
- 12:58Speaker 1: the edges, and I don't know the third or fourth one.
- 13:01Speaker 1: At the very end of the finger of corn, there
- 13:04Speaker 1: was a little strip of grass before you dropped down
- 13:06Speaker 1: to the timber and sitting right there times up with
- 13:09Speaker 1: that beautiful crown, nice fresh four point side. Excuse me.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Not long after that, moments almost you could hear Ryan
- 13:18Speaker 1: making some noise down in the timber, and so I
- 13:21Speaker 1: started heading that direction to see what was going on,
- 13:23Speaker 1: and he found a shed. So I walked down there
- 13:26Speaker 1: and maybe it was a hundred yards down the point,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and um he pulled out this little ditch the other side.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So within a couple of minutes we found both sides
- 13:35Speaker 1: right there, not a hundred parts apart. Yeah, right before
- 13:39Speaker 1: and right before then we had it into lunch. On
- 13:41Speaker 1: on a high note, right, we all rallied rally back
- 13:44Speaker 1: together for lunch. We had a good spread and uh,
- 13:48Speaker 1: thank you for also for the food for your wife
- 13:50Speaker 1: and you bringing all that. She just enjoys doing that.
- 13:54Speaker 1: She loves hosting people and making people feel good, you know.
- 13:57Speaker 1: So she did a good job. Yeah, thank you. Dan's
- 14:00Speaker 1: wife found one too, Yeah. Yeah, so Sarah found the
- 14:04Speaker 1: other one on the field edge. So that was three
- 14:06Speaker 1: we had before lunch. Before lunch we all got back together.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Kind of acreage. What do we cover in that? We
- 14:12Speaker 1: covered a lot. I think we walked. I had I
- 14:16Speaker 1: wasn't walking as much as I know Mark was. Um,
- 14:19Speaker 1: I think I had three miles on the mobile map
- 14:22Speaker 1: around lunchtime, about about three miles and you guys might
- 14:25Speaker 1: have covered covered more two point six according to that
- 14:28Speaker 1: feature on your do you want to describe? That's kind
- 14:30Speaker 1: of cool? That was actually cool. Yeah, so uh we're
- 14:33Speaker 1: talking about the hunterra mobile map. Um, it's the hunt
- 14:37Speaker 1: Terror that you've you know a lot of people know of,
- 14:39Speaker 1: is the the terror images the aerial photography and the
- 14:43Speaker 1: three D terrain model that we put together so you
- 14:45Speaker 1: can see all the natural rises and falls in the
- 14:47Speaker 1: terrain of your ground. We translate that from the printed
- 14:51Speaker 1: map into the mobile map, and it's an applications. It's
- 14:54Speaker 1: a third party application you load into there. But one
- 14:56Speaker 1: of the features is has GPS tracking, so it's simply
- 15:00Speaker 1: tracks where you walk and you can tell you, um
- 15:04Speaker 1: it's really precise, but it also tells you the distance too,
- 15:07Speaker 1: So that's just it's a phenomenal tool. We we all
- 15:10Speaker 1: were running it in our crew today, so we got
- 15:13Speaker 1: to see where we covered and where we didn't. And
- 15:16Speaker 1: I mean that can be great for shed hunting, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: that can also be good for you know, if you're
- 15:20Speaker 1: tracking a deer too, you know. So you've always like
- 15:22Speaker 1: I've heard you talk about that and say that I
- 15:24Speaker 1: never used that feature of it before, or I never
- 15:26Speaker 1: really realized the utility of it until today. And what
- 15:29Speaker 1: I could actually look and see where we really walked.
- 15:32Speaker 1: That was that that was really cool visualize that to
- 15:34Speaker 1: really see that representation. Um, I really like this, So
- 15:38Speaker 1: I think from from now whenever I should, Yeah, I
- 15:40Speaker 1: thought that was It's a great way to just know
- 15:42Speaker 1: what you covered, where you went, see how far you went.
- 15:44Speaker 1: We always talk. I bet you we walked five miles,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but we walked time mountain and now we can see exactly. Um,
- 15:50Speaker 1: that was cool. And now I was you know, you
- 15:52Speaker 1: can drop pins too, so I was marking where you
- 15:54Speaker 1: know some of these big hubscrapes were, and some good signs,
- 15:56Speaker 1: some good crossings and whatnot. Still trying to learn the
- 15:59Speaker 1: farm because we don't know too much about it to
- 16:00Speaker 1: be honest with you. So that's what was fun today
- 16:02Speaker 1: because you know, we didn't find a lot of ships
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the beginning, but we're able to get you information.
- 16:06Speaker 1: But you appreciate down the road absolutely. Yeah, you guys
- 16:09Speaker 1: all came to me some man, you gotta check this
- 16:10Speaker 1: one spot out. Big beds here and this is why
- 16:12Speaker 1: I think he's been here. Rubs, scrapes, stamps, locations. It's awesome.
- 16:17Speaker 1: That's what it's all about. Right, we're all getting together
- 16:19Speaker 1: and just you know, sharing each other's wisdom. And uh,
- 16:23Speaker 1: we had the hell of the time today we did.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I should have sent you the Peter sent me a
- 16:27Speaker 1: video of Corey explaining giving us scouting tips. They're talking
- 16:31Speaker 1: through what were you guys describing just the rubs. How
- 16:34Speaker 1: about the rub that was awesome? Corey just he's pretty
- 16:38Speaker 1: what he thinks it's like a buck and uh we
- 16:41Speaker 1: found these who's Corey by the way, Corky, Coco quirky.
- 16:48Speaker 1: There was the rubs in a ditch and it made
- 16:50Speaker 1: no sense. Why the deer will go down? It was
- 16:52Speaker 1: down in like a steep, skinny ditch, like in between
- 16:56Speaker 1: these two beds right here. You know that this pow,
- 16:59Speaker 1: this this cluster of from and then another you could
- 17:02Speaker 1: walk around on the grass and didn't make any sense.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Why so I'll let you finish the story what Corey said, Oh, well, yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 1: he was he basically, you know, his his thoughts were, um,
- 17:12Speaker 1: this deer's uh, you know, he's he's uh, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: there's some probably some doze out in the crop fields
- 17:20Speaker 1: and and one of them, maybe a couple of them,
- 17:22Speaker 1: are are getting ready to come and keep it. They're
- 17:25Speaker 1: not quite ready, and he's getting worked out. It's probably
- 17:27Speaker 1: like early twenties or early twenties of October over these shore.
- 17:29Speaker 1: The deer is tarting to yeah, and they're starting to rub,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you know, and get get fired up for the rut
- 17:34Speaker 1: to come up, and he's just he's already got the
- 17:35Speaker 1: testosterone going through him. And this, you know Corey described
- 17:39Speaker 1: this buck is probably one that you know, it's probably
- 17:41Speaker 1: pretty aggressive and and is is I'm just gonna drop
- 17:45Speaker 1: right down into here right now, you know, not not
- 17:47Speaker 1: leave this situation. I'll just drop right into this ditch
- 17:49Speaker 1: and rub the nearest trees, you know. And he's like
- 17:51Speaker 1: he's frustrated, like I'm ready to go, and the ladies are. Yeah,
- 17:54Speaker 1: so I'm just gonna hang in this corner right here
- 17:56Speaker 1: on the point of that there yea for no good reason.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And there were old rubs there too. Yeah, really that
- 18:02Speaker 1: was pretty remarkable. I've never seen a lot of big
- 18:05Speaker 1: rubs on this farm. Yeah, I noticed some big I
- 18:07Speaker 1: should have taken more pictures of him. There was a
- 18:09Speaker 1: tree I saw, a big old cedar or something or
- 18:12Speaker 1: a white pine if maybe I mean like a basketball
- 18:16Speaker 1: diameter tree tore up. Yeah, so there's a there's some
- 18:20Speaker 1: bucks in there, but yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean
- 18:22Speaker 1: we killed two dandies off of it this past year.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And uh, what's really cool is big giant bucks. Yeah,
- 18:29Speaker 1: nice ones for sure. Um uh, not the one I killed,
- 18:34Speaker 1: but another one of our friends we hosted this year.
- 18:37Speaker 1: He shot a phenomenal buck on on November seven, I
- 18:41Speaker 1: think it was. We called him the flyer Buck and
- 18:43Speaker 1: he literally off his G two on his right side,
- 18:46Speaker 1: had this big whale tail set of flyers coming off,
- 18:49Speaker 1: and his G two was forked like a tune in
- 18:51Speaker 1: fork and just a lot going on on his right side.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Just awesome, dear, and uh so he kills this thing
- 18:57Speaker 1: and then we found the sheds to it. We found
- 18:59Speaker 1: the sheds which would and we think it wouldn't have
- 19:01Speaker 1: been last year, but maybe the year before, so those
- 19:04Speaker 1: things were sitting out there for a year. So um,
- 19:07Speaker 1: super cool. Definitely him him with that big split split
- 19:10Speaker 1: flyer coming off, and we're going to surprise him with
- 19:13Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna surprise him with a with a
- 19:15Speaker 1: gift and the mail here. Once we can get get
- 19:17Speaker 1: the Times glued back together, it's gonna be pretty cool.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So it's funny. We're in lunch and half the group
- 19:23Speaker 1: had to leave, like Dan and Sarah had to leave
- 19:26Speaker 1: soon and your wife and son and your your least
- 19:30Speaker 1: partner's wife, Ryan the other Ryan had to go. And
- 19:34Speaker 1: someone says, well, you know how it goes as soon
- 19:36Speaker 1: as we all leave, you guys are gonna get into
- 19:38Speaker 1: the sheds when you know it, when you know it.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So we're Dan and Sara, we're gonna go walk this
- 19:45Speaker 1: one area. And they had to leave early, so like, well,
- 19:47Speaker 1: we're just gonna go over there and we'll walk a
- 19:49Speaker 1: little bit nowhere and go. And then the rest of
- 19:51Speaker 1: us were talking about going across the road or I
- 19:53Speaker 1: don't know, somewhere else. So we all piled into the
- 19:57Speaker 1: the four wheeler and the UTV and Peter decided to
- 20:01Speaker 1: just strap on right on. Back to mind. Ryan on
- 20:03Speaker 1: the I felt like it was eighteen again, right and
- 20:06Speaker 1: four whether back in Michigan. And I thought you were
- 20:10Speaker 1: gonna say, like you felt your eighteen going to problem again,
- 20:12Speaker 1: get your arms around them real tight. Yeah, it's not good.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You know, security gets that a good bonding experience, Robbins racing.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So we I feel a little bad for Dan. Well
- 20:27Speaker 1: do you feel Well, here's what happened. I was physically
- 20:31Speaker 1: there and he was telling, right, we're gonna walk this
- 20:34Speaker 1: timber right here, okay, and where we were it wasn't
- 20:38Speaker 1: really timber, right, true? Right? Yeah? So I think in
- 20:45Speaker 1: the end, so Ryan and I just went where he
- 20:50Speaker 1: was parked, and we went straight through the corn headed
- 20:52Speaker 1: for some it's probably not the best ground the walk,
- 20:55Speaker 1: you know, like this beautiful prairie grass for the deer
- 20:58Speaker 1: going to lay during the middle of the night. Welling,
- 21:00Speaker 1: Sure you didn't, I wondered. They're like, wow, where are
- 21:03Speaker 1: they going? Because I did think we were going across
- 21:04Speaker 1: the road, and then all of a sudden turned turned
- 21:08Speaker 1: down and went towards So let's go check this different
- 21:11Speaker 1: style of ground out that we haven't looked at yet.
- 21:14Speaker 1: We've had success ross and I in a different part
- 21:17Speaker 1: of the country hunting that ship, hunting that kind of
- 21:20Speaker 1: stuff like he talked about in the past for strips,
- 21:22Speaker 1: and yeah, that's where we kind of You've got these
- 21:25Speaker 1: fields and then you've got these grassy strips, waterways coming
- 21:29Speaker 1: down towards the bottoms, towards the big timber draws, and
- 21:34Speaker 1: so we go running towards one of those. You're in
- 21:35Speaker 1: the four whether we're in the u TV behind you,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and what happened. Uh, he's pull off a little bit
- 21:42Speaker 1: ten feet in and I jump off, I look straight down,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I go G two. He goes kind of looked at
- 21:46Speaker 1: me like, no, go yeah, g two, but sixty eyes.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It looks like holy explanation. And he's like, I can't believe.
- 21:55Speaker 1: He said, yeah, like damn, that's a that's a big life. Yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 1: got some eyes today. So and then within five minutes
- 22:01Speaker 1: week he last tried to find the other one. He
- 22:02Speaker 1: found a smaller one just underneath the tree at the
- 22:04Speaker 1: same time. So they're like dirty yards away. Yeah. Yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: So it was fun. So we go running down and
- 22:10Speaker 1: literally it was right where Dan was walking guards. I
- 22:12Speaker 1: did feel bad. I looked to the right and here
- 22:14Speaker 1: he counters it was on Dan's path, So I took
- 22:18Speaker 1: over Corey's job of sniping. I'm sure Dan's gonna mention you. Yeah, probably,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, it's all right. I adjusted him last time,
- 22:26Speaker 1: so that's true. You adjusted Dan. Yeah, okay, it's just
- 22:29Speaker 1: like an initiation, like I'm part of your guys, brother,
- 22:31Speaker 1: you are part of it. We have a lot to offer.
- 22:34Speaker 1: My neck feels phenomenal right now, So we did. I
- 22:37Speaker 1: had got a good little adjustment there by cross hass
- 22:39Speaker 1: as well, and that was that was impressive, just for
- 22:42Speaker 1: you know, headaches and shoulder pain. That's not normal. You
- 22:46Speaker 1: can get that. Look at you're saying it's not normal
- 22:49Speaker 1: all the time, having headaches all the time. Something can
- 22:51Speaker 1: be done. The stress of business owner, right, all all
- 22:56Speaker 1: adds up into those muscles. Yeah, we're gonna work on that. Yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it's a work life balance, Mark, you're right. Entrepreneurs, we gather, Yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 1: keep things figured out, I guess. But so all chass
- 23:08Speaker 1: broke up. You found that, which was cool. I went
- 23:10Speaker 1: down and kind of did our thing, you know, it
- 23:12Speaker 1: couldn't pick it up right away, and all of a sudden,
- 23:15Speaker 1: then we found Ryan's the other one, and all something
- 23:17Speaker 1: we started then once you but the experience centers like, oh,
- 23:20Speaker 1: we're in a we're in a what are we in? Ross?
- 23:23Speaker 1: What kind of spot where we're they're bringing Mike up. Yeah,
- 23:30Speaker 1: glory glory hole. Yeah yeah, it probably wasn't glory glory hole.
- 23:34Speaker 1: That could be called that. Yes, that was definitely a
- 23:36Speaker 1: glory hole. So Coco. You can see Coco's heads perked up.
- 23:39Speaker 1: He's like the pace started to quicken. Yeah, you get
- 23:42Speaker 1: this like this, it's a shed fomo is what I
- 23:45Speaker 1: call it, fear missing out when you know you're in
- 23:47Speaker 1: a glory hole of shed glory hall all of a sudden,
- 23:49Speaker 1: like Okay, where is it? Where is it? You know,
- 23:51Speaker 1: and so everyone starts walking faster. Everyone nobody takes as
- 23:55Speaker 1: much time to take yeah, and people just scatter just
- 23:59Speaker 1: it was chaos. Everyone incredible up the hill and you're
- 24:03Speaker 1: finding right away, and then somebody found the match to that.
- 24:05Speaker 1: It was funny because we're all surrounding this shed, you know,
- 24:08Speaker 1: the first one we found post lunch and it was
- 24:11Speaker 1: a dandy. We're all surrounding it like this the first
- 24:14Speaker 1: antler we have we've ever seen. We're all likes taking
- 24:17Speaker 1: pictures of it close and it's like a few autographs
- 24:20Speaker 1: went out even yeah, yea, some chest bumps, you know.
- 24:24Speaker 1: And the next thing, you know, we look up and
- 24:26Speaker 1: there's another one, and then there's another one, and then
- 24:28Speaker 1: we're like, yeah, that geez, that that's only a you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: move on to the next one. And Corky took off running.
- 24:36Speaker 1: She was getting all excited. And then what happened next, Peter, Well,
- 24:39Speaker 1: then since I found a nice shed, I'm like, well,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know, we're all here to find, so I'm gonna
- 24:43Speaker 1: go up on the top of the hill and I like,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I'll just take a second or two and I'll just
- 24:47Speaker 1: glass the field edge because we're in a hot spot
- 24:49Speaker 1: and nobody likes the corn anyway, so glass and I'm
- 24:53Speaker 1: glassing like thirty yards off Corey's left hand side into
- 24:57Speaker 1: the like the shorter walked past it though, So yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 1: it kind of was. I'm like, I'm like in my mind,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, when you're an HD binoculars, everything
- 25:06Speaker 1: looks huge. I'm like, oh, shut and you can see
- 25:11Speaker 1: Corey's like, you know, it was so close to him.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I felt bad for a second and for once, Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 1: it ran up there and it was pretty nice. I
- 25:19Speaker 1: was like on top of the world. That was a nice,
- 25:23Speaker 1: really nice one. Like if it was NBA jam you
- 25:25Speaker 1: would be yeah, he's heating up. Yeah, yeah, is it
- 25:30Speaker 1: the shoes? I was Bo Jackson and the tech mobile.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So you you found the one from the former, then
- 25:36Speaker 1: Ryan's boy the small one underneath the tree, and then
- 25:39Speaker 1: we walked up and so one found another small one.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Did you see the small one? I think yeah, I
- 25:42Speaker 1: found a little dinker. You found the small found the
- 25:45Speaker 1: match right after that, and he did, and then he
- 25:47Speaker 1: just gave it to you, gave it to me, and
- 25:49Speaker 1: then Corey did find find gave it up and then
- 25:52Speaker 1: not long after that you spotted that big one, and
- 25:56Speaker 1: then did they find another little one over there? And
- 25:59Speaker 1: this is all in like a but it's interesting is
- 26:06Speaker 1: the two studs that we found, well that you found,
- 26:09Speaker 1: we couldn't match them up, right, So they're out there something, Yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 1: they're they're they're out there. And then so Dan he's like,
- 26:16Speaker 1: peace out on you guys here as you look at
- 26:19Speaker 1: I thought he might have went back to his car
- 26:20Speaker 1: and they had to leave, right, and what do we know?
- 26:23Speaker 1: They continued on. They continued to greener pastures man, and
- 26:27Speaker 1: they ended up picking up for all nice ones. Yeah.
- 26:31Speaker 1: That one that Sara found I think is gotta be
- 26:34Speaker 1: the most genetically superior one. I mean, no more than
- 26:37Speaker 1: three could have been a two year old. And it
- 26:39Speaker 1: was a big five points, big frame, Yeah, big four
- 26:41Speaker 1: on it. I mean that was that was that was
- 26:44Speaker 1: pretty neat seeing uh, good variety. We were walking up
- 26:47Speaker 1: from a distance that was ross and yeah, no Ryan
- 26:50Speaker 1: was with us, and I thought there was waving seventies around.
- 26:53Speaker 1: They looked huge from a distance. Yeah, that was awesome.
- 26:56Speaker 1: They found four good ones and then we all kept
- 26:59Speaker 1: looking and me and Ben we found the old ones.
- 27:03Speaker 1: You found the old flyer one and I found a
- 27:05Speaker 1: really nice old ran in the first one you ran
- 27:08Speaker 1: into was that was one of the bigger found. I
- 27:11Speaker 1: wish it was fresh. I mean it's not fresh for
- 27:15Speaker 1: some reason, being old. Felt a little bit yeah sub
- 27:18Speaker 1: sub whatever it would have been before. But still I
- 27:20Speaker 1: mean probably a six inch side yeah um, but just
- 27:24Speaker 1: bleached white. You know, it's a little bit lighter weight
- 27:27Speaker 1: after they've been out there for a while. But still
- 27:28Speaker 1: awesome to find that. And then not long after that,
- 27:31Speaker 1: the flyerbuck we find bleached up. He was actually cracked,
- 27:34Speaker 1: like the flyer was broke off of him. But it
- 27:36Speaker 1: was right there. So field edge, I mean, how did
- 27:38Speaker 1: you get run over field edge? You have field edge
- 27:41Speaker 1: up against the fence basically in some grass right there.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I don't I mean, must have dragged you know, drug
- 27:47Speaker 1: some sort of implement across to to snap it like that.
- 27:50Speaker 1: But it was all still right there, and the in
- 27:51Speaker 1: the fracture was like a puzzle piece, like a carpenter's
- 27:55Speaker 1: router or something. You know, we're gonna be able to
- 27:56Speaker 1: get that thing back together. So that was just super cool, awesome.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You know, it's not all the time when you close
- 28:02Speaker 1: you know, you kind of you kill a buck and
- 28:05Speaker 1: then you find his shed afterwards, right, that's kind of easy.
- 28:09Speaker 1: That's pretty wild. And then things slowed down for that though,
- 28:13Speaker 1: when we came back Bactoriality and we found one more yet.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you found that fund that one. Yeah, that's
- 28:22Speaker 1: gonna be a nice buck. That was probably I think
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's one and a half split G two framed up
- 28:28Speaker 1: in split two solid frame yeah, split bro, excuse me
- 28:33Speaker 1: a problem? Yeah, way off one? Yeah, one? Not bad?
- 28:41Speaker 1: So how many was that? Fifteen total? I think? And
- 28:44Speaker 1: all in the last three or four hours of the day, right,
- 28:48Speaker 1: most of them were in like an hour and a
- 28:49Speaker 1: half or hour. Even It's gonna be a few more
- 28:51Speaker 1: out there, Oh yeah, I think there's definitely still more
- 28:55Speaker 1: sheds out there for you guys if Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 1: So it was cool to do that, and man, we
- 28:59Speaker 1: just just scouting is just this is just such a
- 29:01Speaker 1: great time to go out there is all the drab
- 29:03Speaker 1: colors of of late winter, um, especially when you get
- 29:07Speaker 1: some moisture and there's some mud, you know, and these
- 29:09Speaker 1: deer trails just stick out like a sore thumb and
- 29:13Speaker 1: you can just get on these things and figure out
- 29:15Speaker 1: parts of your property without really affecting it whenever it
- 29:19Speaker 1: comes time to hunt. Um, you can do so much
- 29:22Speaker 1: homework right now, it's the most critical time from a
- 29:24Speaker 1: scouting perspective. Of people have said it before, but today
- 29:26Speaker 1: was just a great example. I mean we really covered
- 29:29Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that we would not even think
- 29:30Speaker 1: about walking in come hunting season. So do you feel
- 29:33Speaker 1: like you learned some stuff today, even you know, combining
- 29:36Speaker 1: shed hunting and scouting like you took. You have some
- 29:39Speaker 1: takeaways after today's walk and hearing from everyone, Yeah, I
- 29:42Speaker 1: mean hunting perspective, absolutely, yeah. I mean this this farm
- 29:45Speaker 1: lays out completely different than the other property I hunt
- 29:47Speaker 1: and the other ones. You know, it's cattle farm. It's
- 29:49Speaker 1: got CRP and the cows are pastured in the timber,
- 29:53Speaker 1: so it's you've got a different ecosystem. They're basically you know,
- 29:57Speaker 1: compared to this. Composition of this farm is clad sick
- 30:00Speaker 1: brushy draws, creek bottoms, some hardwood ridges and knolls and
- 30:06Speaker 1: uh and then a ton of crop ground you know,
- 30:08Speaker 1: and it's completely different. So, um, something I really keyed
- 30:14Speaker 1: in on was where a lot of the you know,
- 30:16Speaker 1: um uh kind of in between these fingers where you'd
- 30:23Speaker 1: have I don't want to say a transition area, but
- 30:26Speaker 1: you can kind of tell there's a main trail coming
- 30:29Speaker 1: out of the cover, and a lot of times you'll
- 30:32Speaker 1: find before they hit into the wide open field, there
- 30:37Speaker 1: will be maybe be a grass patch. They're just kind
- 30:40Speaker 1: of an open area or where that edge is is
- 30:42Speaker 1: feathered into. You know, it's not quite pure timber, but
- 30:45Speaker 1: it's it's still a little bit of cover and just
- 30:48Speaker 1: as they're coming out and there's almost always a scrape there,
- 30:51Speaker 1: you know, And that's that's pretty cool to remember down
- 30:53Speaker 1: the road to be able to maybe set some cameras
- 30:55Speaker 1: and what lot too. And I picked out a great
- 30:57Speaker 1: treat to observe observation. Stand um with that with Corey
- 31:02Speaker 1: when we were heading towards you to go, when you
- 31:04Speaker 1: picked up that that that nice one. Um we passed
- 31:08Speaker 1: a cottonwood, that would just be awesome. It'll be honest, Uh,
- 31:11Speaker 1: anything south or west, but I basically can see that
- 31:15Speaker 1: whole face that we walked this morning, our team that
- 31:19Speaker 1: we walked. You know, let's a lot of ground and uh,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I'll have to get up high, but man, what a
- 31:24Speaker 1: great tree I found right there. And I can hopefully
- 31:26Speaker 1: use that to learn you know, early in the in
- 31:28Speaker 1: the season and figure out what bucks are coming up
- 31:30Speaker 1: this far will be so good for observation stands like
- 31:33Speaker 1: the views you have, especially like this year. If it's
- 31:36Speaker 1: all planned and beans like the velvet footage and the
- 31:39Speaker 1: velvet scouting, you're gonna be able to do. We'll just
- 31:41Speaker 1: be premo. Yes, you could be could be pretty good.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Then you got those white pines just as you enter. Yeah,
- 31:47Speaker 1: that's that's unique. Pretty little section there, Yeah, I mean
- 31:51Speaker 1: pretty random. I saw quite a few. Oh yeah, that
- 31:56Speaker 1: was tore up in there. Yeah, that was super thick.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You can't even walk, did you guys ever walked through
- 32:00Speaker 1: that or not? I walked the when we got ahold
- 32:03Speaker 1: of that place last year. I walked. It would be
- 32:06Speaker 1: on the west end of it where the creek comes together,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and there's a we found a dead cow in there. Yeah,
- 32:12Speaker 1: but oh man, what a crossing right there. And it
- 32:15Speaker 1: is it's crazy thick. There's some blowdowns, a lot of
- 32:17Speaker 1: signpost rubs. It's all yeah, blowdowns, super thick. Yeah, huge
- 32:21Speaker 1: signpost rubs in there, and kind to overlook maybe you know,
- 32:25Speaker 1: it just seems like one of those overlooked areas where
- 32:27Speaker 1: you pull your you pull your truck into the property
- 32:29Speaker 1: and he's that bunch laying there watching the whole time.
- 32:32Speaker 1: I don't know what a tricky spot man. And it
- 32:34Speaker 1: makes so much sense, It makes so much sense a
- 32:36Speaker 1: deer which would would would hang there and observe it was.
- 32:39Speaker 1: It was awesome in there. So what's the deal with
- 32:43Speaker 1: this farm? I mean when you picked it up, you
- 32:45Speaker 1: got you know, it's a new lease and you came
- 32:49Speaker 1: into it. When did you When did you figure out
- 32:51Speaker 1: you're gonna be hunt this place? Last year? Um? I
- 32:55Speaker 1: think we walked it in I want to say April,
- 33:00Speaker 1: so you think it was I think it was in April. Yeah,
- 33:04Speaker 1: excuse me. We got um, we got to walk it
- 33:08Speaker 1: right at the tail end before it got crazy thick.
- 33:12Speaker 1: So we did as much scouting as we could, the
- 33:14Speaker 1: two of us on this place, and and um, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 1: we set cams but it just wasn't enough cameras too
- 33:20Speaker 1: to cover what's there. And u um, basically we just
- 33:24Speaker 1: wanted to excuse me, used the year to to observe.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And your first two kills were substantial. Yes, how did
- 33:33Speaker 1: your season? How did your first season the new property. Go, Yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 1: I killed well, right, yeah, man, I was fortunate. I've
- 33:40Speaker 1: been I don't want to say snake bit, I've done
- 33:43Speaker 1: it to myself, you know, but I've messed up a
- 33:44Speaker 1: couple of deer since moving here. One one sixteen, just
- 33:48Speaker 1: didn't put good enough shots on him to kill him,
- 33:50Speaker 1: and really started to battle, um, some confidence issues, you know.
- 33:55Speaker 1: So it went back into the drawing board and taught myself,
- 34:00Speaker 1: tried to reteach myself how to shoot, and I switched
- 34:02Speaker 1: to a back tension release, and I think that helped
- 34:04Speaker 1: me figure out how to execu just in practice or
- 34:07Speaker 1: did you actually use that in the field of hometown unt?
- 34:10Speaker 1: I used it in the field as well. Yeah, So
- 34:11Speaker 1: I ended up getting a couple of releases and and
- 34:14Speaker 1: uh in running them from February. Started shooting in February
- 34:17Speaker 1: basically and on through and really got comfortable with first
- 34:21Speaker 1: the back tension. We're getting way off from my season,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but this kind of leads into it, you know. And
- 34:27Speaker 1: and um, the back tension was a good way for
- 34:31Speaker 1: me to execute a shot and follow through and be
- 34:34Speaker 1: comfortable with a surprise and not be okay with that
- 34:38Speaker 1: pin just floating on the target, you know. Floating on
- 34:42Speaker 1: the target and not have to be one specific spot
- 34:44Speaker 1: and then fire, you know. So um once I got
- 34:46Speaker 1: through those those demons and and uh uh, basically, you know,
- 34:52Speaker 1: pick this farm up and and it's always nice to
- 34:54Speaker 1: have options. But my other farm just does not hunt
- 34:57Speaker 1: well with the north wind. I can only access it
- 34:59Speaker 1: from the north. So I needed to find something where
- 35:01Speaker 1: I could have better longevity throughout the season to be
- 35:04Speaker 1: able to hunt. So we found this property we can
- 35:06Speaker 1: access from all sides, and um, I hunted, I hunted. Uh,
- 35:12Speaker 1: let's see, I hunted late October two sets, two evening sets,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and then um uh November two would have been my
- 35:24Speaker 1: third sit and that's when I went in and and
- 35:26Speaker 1: uh uh I went in and hung a stand on
- 35:29Speaker 1: a on a spot of the farm where I knew
- 35:31Speaker 1: would be a good bottleneck and it was up against
- 35:33Speaker 1: some really good cover and we called it the sanctuary, right,
- 35:35Speaker 1: and it was an area that was timbered and years
- 35:38Speaker 1: ago and it's just really really thick, one of the
- 35:41Speaker 1: spots that Ryan and I remembered in April, and uh
- 35:45Speaker 1: put on a really good rattling sequence there at three
- 35:47Speaker 1: o'clock and I was on the phone with my wife,
- 35:50Speaker 1: and uh, because she was in Italy and I'm I'm
- 35:52Speaker 1: talking to her on FaceTime, you know, in the stand
- 35:56Speaker 1: in the stand. Yeah, So I rattled and we haven't
- 35:58Speaker 1: we didn't talk for like five days because of the
- 35:59Speaker 1: time they so she calls me like I have to
- 36:02Speaker 1: answer it, you know. So I'm kind of leaning against
- 36:04Speaker 1: the tree, just looking at her, you know what We're
- 36:05Speaker 1: talking and and uh, and about all five probably five minutes,
- 36:12Speaker 1: maybe a little bit more. Here he comes out of
- 36:15Speaker 1: the out of the sanction where I could just see
- 36:17Speaker 1: his crown and his black cap on his forehead. And
- 36:20Speaker 1: I'm like, I remember telling her, oh my god, there
- 36:23Speaker 1: here comes a giant. And I just stuffed the phone
- 36:25Speaker 1: in my pocket. I don't even know if I hung
- 36:27Speaker 1: up her. I just stuffed the phone in my pocket.
- 36:29Speaker 1: And uh, he came in. He got behind a tree,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and he was kind of looking you could tell you
- 36:34Speaker 1: didn't quite know where I was. So I feel like
- 36:36Speaker 1: that rattling sequence brought him. Um. I think when I rattled,
- 36:40Speaker 1: he was far enough away, or he was out of
- 36:43Speaker 1: it enough. Maybe he was just kind of, you know,
- 36:46Speaker 1: just chilling during the daytime. But he didn't come over
- 36:48Speaker 1: right away. So he didn't quite pinpoint me. So when
- 36:50Speaker 1: he came around and a couple more grunts, I mean
- 36:53Speaker 1: that told him right where to go. And um, I
- 36:56Speaker 1: drew on him at about forty and followed him in
- 36:59Speaker 1: and just followed his vitols on with the pin and
- 37:01Speaker 1: everything just really slowed down. And it goes back to
- 37:03Speaker 1: that kind of reteaching myself to be comfortable with, you know,
- 37:07Speaker 1: at the moment of truth, and just was thankful I
- 37:10Speaker 1: put a good shot on him, and uh, I basically
- 37:12Speaker 1: watched him go down, but I didn't quite see it,
- 37:14Speaker 1: you know. I gave him a couple of hours and uh, um,
- 37:18Speaker 1: gave him a couple of hours, and and uh I
- 37:20Speaker 1: went I went back into recovering him with my mom
- 37:22Speaker 1: and with Jack and and uh as soon as I
- 37:25Speaker 1: shot him, I called Kate back. I said, I'm sorry
- 37:27Speaker 1: I hung up on you, but I just put an
- 37:28Speaker 1: arrow through a great dear, you know, And and that
- 37:31Speaker 1: was just a cool moment. So I imagine that's yeah, yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 1: but that your biggest ever. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah. Yeah,
- 37:40Speaker 1: he's he's just really cool, dear. He's uh, fifteen inches wide,
- 37:45Speaker 1: pretty tall, mega heavy, you know, just the weight of
- 37:49Speaker 1: his aunt antlers in general was um, pretty was the
- 37:52Speaker 1: most impressive part. It's a main frame, he'd be a
- 37:56Speaker 1: main frame nine. But his his what made him a
- 38:00Speaker 1: nine point was a crab cloud four on his left side,
- 38:03Speaker 1: which is pretty cool, and it just kind of went out,
- 38:05Speaker 1: was like a classic curved crab cloud, you know. So
- 38:08Speaker 1: as an eight he you know, if he was if
- 38:10Speaker 1: he didn't have that as an eight point, he would
- 38:12Speaker 1: have been really impressive. Right, But threw a couple of
- 38:15Speaker 1: kickers and had added more inches, but um, super heavy.
- 38:18Speaker 1: We walked up on him and it's just like, oh
- 38:20Speaker 1: my goodness, how we're going to get this thing out
- 38:22Speaker 1: of here? And uh we drug him out and in
- 38:25Speaker 1: uh uh the celebration was on. Man, it felt told. Um. So,
- 38:33Speaker 1: I without any history with him, I think he was
- 38:35Speaker 1: probably six plus. He was just a hog, you know.
- 38:38Speaker 1: It wasn't certainly in his prime. Um. The jaw bone,
- 38:42Speaker 1: on the other hand, I'm not quite sure. Um you know,
- 38:46Speaker 1: if like the job bone was looking more like four
- 38:49Speaker 1: possibly five, right, But then again, I'm not quite sure
- 38:52Speaker 1: how good I am as far as you know, scoring
- 38:55Speaker 1: these these things. Looking at a ton of job bones.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I don't have much history with so I'm gonna say
- 39:00Speaker 1: the teeth into um figure out how old he was.
- 39:03Speaker 1: But he was fully mature and just when I was
- 39:06Speaker 1: pretty pumped and put my tag around after, you know,
- 39:09Speaker 1: after yeah, thank you guys, thank you. Yeah, I would say,
- 39:13Speaker 1: So that's awesome. And then you mentioned earlier another mega
- 39:17Speaker 1: giant buck was killed in the property. A couple of
- 39:19Speaker 1: days later. Yeah, a couple of days later, a buddy
- 39:21Speaker 1: of ours from Michigan came down and they were hunting
- 39:24Speaker 1: kind of you know, off and on throughout the season,
- 39:26Speaker 1: and and uh, he came down and put an arrow
- 39:29Speaker 1: through the flyer buck that we we had pictures with
- 39:31Speaker 1: in the summertime. Um, and just a cool like I
- 39:35Speaker 1: think I should be. I guess he'd be like a
- 39:37Speaker 1: main frame eight, but he had a bunch going on
- 39:39Speaker 1: on his two with a flyer and a split and everything. Yeah. Yeah,
- 39:44Speaker 1: not a little guy for sure. So another another really
- 39:47Speaker 1: big animal, uh weight wise, body wise, so to you know,
- 39:52Speaker 1: dominant bucks that we killed off that farm. So I
- 39:54Speaker 1: mean that who knows, we might be dealing with a
- 39:56Speaker 1: bunch of four year olds is coming year, which is
- 39:58Speaker 1: still a great problem to have, right Well, yeah, based
- 40:01Speaker 1: off of the sheds. We found him. We found sheds
- 40:05Speaker 1: from at least five different bucks that should be four
- 40:07Speaker 1: year older this year, right, and we know there's probably
- 40:10Speaker 1: a lot more, definitely, Yeah, I mean, and that that's
- 40:14Speaker 1: not a that's not a representation of the only things
- 40:17Speaker 1: that are living on there throughout the year. And this
- 40:18Speaker 1: is a great red farm the way it lays out,
- 40:21Speaker 1: something from the neighborhood could come scooting through here, and
- 40:23Speaker 1: there's a lot of bottlenecks in it. So hopefully we
- 40:27Speaker 1: can have success. It's coming year. Yeah, that should I found.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I'm curious to see what that looks like next year.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But that was real thick thick bags. Yeah, good mass.
- 40:36Speaker 1: I cannot imagine what life would be like hunting a
- 40:39Speaker 1: farm with five four year olds. That sounds amazing, yeah,
- 40:46Speaker 1: I mean, but then again, it's a right. It's all relative.
- 40:49Speaker 1: It is all relative. I'm by no means uh being
- 40:54Speaker 1: jaded by the circumstances of having that right, But that's
- 40:58Speaker 1: not I mean, that's um, you know, you could be
- 41:02Speaker 1: chasing a couple of three year olds in in Michigan
- 41:04Speaker 1: and be having just as much of a unique circumstance,
- 41:08Speaker 1: you know, So it's a it's all depending one where
- 41:12Speaker 1: you're at, what you got, what's going on? Having a
- 41:15Speaker 1: good time? Right? Absolutely? So you talked about this big
- 41:17Speaker 1: giant flyerbuck. Uh here, Ross, you've got a story related
- 41:24Speaker 1: to something like that. You want to tell us about
- 41:26Speaker 1: your season, because we we had you on the podcast
- 41:29Speaker 1: in fallen. We did that analyzing four successful rout hunts.
- 41:36Speaker 1: That one podcast where we talked about my killed during
- 41:38Speaker 1: the route, we talked about Dan's killed during the route,
- 41:40Speaker 1: we talked talked about Quirky's Quirky's killed during the rut,
- 41:46Speaker 1: and we talked about You're killed during the rut that year.
- 41:48Speaker 1: But we haven't had you on to talk about your
- 41:50Speaker 1: seventeen season. Had that go down? It was? It was awesome, awesome,
- 41:54Speaker 1: yere I actually got a chance to kill a big
- 41:57Speaker 1: flyerbuck myself. Um, give us the whole history. The story
- 42:02Speaker 1: is this, dear, the whole history, whole thing. Ah. So first,
- 42:05Speaker 1: what what'd you name this dear Jim Lee? And where
- 42:08Speaker 1: in the world did that come from? Trailer park boys?
- 42:11Speaker 1: Do so? Um, he's like the trailer park supervisor or whatever.
- 42:18Speaker 1: He's a drunk. Can I also point out, I'm sorry
- 42:20Speaker 1: keep interrupting your story? I love your names for bucks,
- 42:25Speaker 1: and I really love the fact that you named one
- 42:28Speaker 1: of your bucks after one of my friends from grade school.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I got a buddy that I've noticed as the second
- 42:34Speaker 1: grade named Jason Tran. He is not a hunter in
- 42:40Speaker 1: any way, shape or form, but he often he follows
- 42:44Speaker 1: my stuff because we're buddies, and he'll often leave random
- 42:47Speaker 1: comments that make no sense stuff. Yeah, that's how I
- 42:50Speaker 1: got to know Jason Tranch. He doesn't know who I am,
- 42:52Speaker 1: but I always thought he was funny because of the comments,
- 42:55Speaker 1: and I knew how how good of a friend he
- 42:57Speaker 1: was of yours. So I'm like, that's a good name
- 42:59Speaker 1: for him. So you look like a Jason Jason Tramps.
- 43:02Speaker 1: He got a big mega eight point named Jason Trainer
- 43:05Speaker 1: hunh Yeah. Yeah, he's He's he's on the He's the
- 43:08Speaker 1: one that I want to get next year. Worried no Ross,
- 43:13Speaker 1: which was awesome for Ross. It wasn't this first time
- 43:15Speaker 1: he said this buck or nothing. Yeah. This was the
- 43:18Speaker 1: first year that. Yeah, but you know, well that's what
- 43:22Speaker 1: that's what I went in the season sane, but you
- 43:24Speaker 1: know something, But you were going after him, Yeah, I
- 43:29Speaker 1: wanted to history. Yeah, yeah, so sorry, go back to
- 43:32Speaker 1: your store of the history. It was. Yeah, it was
- 43:34Speaker 1: so like a couple of years prior, I was getting
- 43:36Speaker 1: pictures of this buck with super potentially had like all
- 43:38Speaker 1: these He's one of those like young bucks with all
- 43:41Speaker 1: those like little sticker points and he's got like splits
- 43:44Speaker 1: and it's like, you know, if he get makes it
- 43:45Speaker 1: a couple more years, he's going to be a really
- 43:47Speaker 1: great buck. And uh, and I don't know he maybe
- 43:50Speaker 1: it was maybe it was a huge two year old.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Then he might have been like just an awesome three
- 43:55Speaker 1: year old with a lot of potential. I'm not sure. Um.
- 43:58Speaker 1: But then the next year I started getting pictures um
- 44:03Speaker 1: again and uh this year that year he had big
- 44:07Speaker 1: split so he had on the left side, he had
- 44:09Speaker 1: a big split G two split G three on the
- 44:13Speaker 1: right said he had this big inside kicker point. He
- 44:16Speaker 1: was just an awesome buck. But he had like but
- 44:19Speaker 1: he was probably like hundred thirties frame with all the
- 44:23Speaker 1: that junk. Um. So going into the year, I'm like, man,
- 44:28Speaker 1: that's a nice buck. But I didn't really want to
- 44:29Speaker 1: shoot him. I wanted to see him. Yeah, yeah, this
- 44:33Speaker 1: is this is last year. Yeah, yeah, two years. So
- 44:38Speaker 1: there's this Uh. In the farm, there's this big like
- 44:40Speaker 1: primary scrape. All the bucks hit it in October that
- 44:44Speaker 1: are in the area. Um And come like mid October
- 44:47Speaker 1: to late October, every single buck in that area hits it,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and a lot of bucks, even the mature bucks, will
- 44:53Speaker 1: hit it in daylight, even in the mornings. Um So
- 44:57Speaker 1: I went down in there when the conditions were right,
- 45:00Speaker 1: and I got set up over that scrape, and I
- 45:05Speaker 1: got a chance to see him and he came in
- 45:07Speaker 1: and actually my my gun instinct when he when he
- 45:09Speaker 1: came in he was coming in, I'm like, oh, that's
- 45:12Speaker 1: a nice book. But I never even grabbed my bowl.
- 45:15Speaker 1: And then when he got past me, he was like
- 45:17Speaker 1: thirty yards broadside and he's going past I'm like, oh,
- 45:20Speaker 1: that's Jim Late, And I was like maybe, And then
- 45:23Speaker 1: I was like kind of panicking, you know, like maybe
- 45:25Speaker 1: I should have grabbed my bowl, but I shouldn't have.
- 45:27Speaker 1: He he never like he never like got my heart
- 45:30Speaker 1: racing or anything, and he shouldn't have because at that
- 45:32Speaker 1: time he just wasn't what I wanted to shoot. So
- 45:36Speaker 1: um So he walked. And then later on that year
- 45:40Speaker 1: I got a chance to see him again and he
- 45:41Speaker 1: was he got into like all I've never seen like
- 45:44Speaker 1: I've seen dear sparring here, dear sparring. You see it
- 45:47Speaker 1: all the time, but never like all out fight. You know.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Oh man, that was incredible. And he was going with
- 45:53Speaker 1: the water the buck uh Kevin vander Boom. So it
- 46:01Speaker 1: was that. That's what another. Yeah, he's a hundred seventy
- 46:05Speaker 1: and is just head yeah, big dog. Yeah. So the
- 46:09Speaker 1: Firebucks going with it, going at it with this guy.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Whatever happened, don't know, he's I don't know, Yes, I
- 46:14Speaker 1: don't know. I wish I knew, um, but yeah, they
- 46:18Speaker 1: it was one of those times you sit in the
- 46:19Speaker 1: stands a slower than slow and I don't know if
- 46:22Speaker 1: it was mid afternoon or when it was kind of
- 46:24Speaker 1: mid midash day, and it sounds like two baseball bats
- 46:27Speaker 1: just somebody just cracked him together. Whoa you You're just
- 46:30Speaker 1: like kind of jumping like what was that? And I'm
- 46:33Speaker 1: looking around then you can just see that brown flashing
- 46:35Speaker 1: through the timber and holy cow, it was like just
- 46:38Speaker 1: two huge bucks going to town. And it's so funny.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Um because the two sorry about that. My microphone wasn't
- 46:49Speaker 1: close enough to him. I'm getting yelled at the mark
- 46:51Speaker 1: over here. Now you turn your head. You turn your
- 46:56Speaker 1: head too much. The best in four headsets and we'd
- 46:59Speaker 1: be fine. We We've already described the fact that wired
- 47:02Speaker 1: Hunt is not doing very well because I buy Budweiser
- 47:04Speaker 1: happy to drink, so you can't expect me to afford
- 47:07Speaker 1: for So that was a microphone gesture. I'm leaving. That's
- 47:16Speaker 1: all things work in Hollywood, Okay. So so talking to
- 47:20Speaker 1: the right here is that good? That's a pretty good
- 47:23Speaker 1: farther away, closer, closer, far closer and suddenly not interested. Yeah,
- 47:36Speaker 1: whatever whatever you gott Yeah, yeah, blah blah blah um.
- 47:40Speaker 1: So yeah, um that was it for that year. And
- 47:44Speaker 1: then the next year got some pictures of him again,
- 47:47Speaker 1: except for he didn't have those big splits. He just
- 47:48Speaker 1: had big flyer that was split off the left G
- 47:53Speaker 1: two and then he had like a nice inside point.
- 47:55Speaker 1: In this year, he was bigger. He was more like
- 47:57Speaker 1: a hundred and fifties inch frame with trash, and I
- 48:01Speaker 1: was getting pictures of him. I'll just keep the story
- 48:04Speaker 1: short because I can just talk forever and people would
- 48:06Speaker 1: be bored with that. So so then, um, I wasn't
- 48:10Speaker 1: really getting too many pictures of them as much as
- 48:12Speaker 1: last year. But then I had a picture on um,
- 48:16Speaker 1: a little food plot, and I got a picture of
- 48:17Speaker 1: him coming back into the into the farm that morning,
- 48:22Speaker 1: and so I was like, um, this was November seven
- 48:27Speaker 1: or something like that, seventh, and so I got a
- 48:30Speaker 1: picture of him coming into the farms. I'm like, Jeezy's
- 48:32Speaker 1: got to be in the area, and chances are he's
- 48:34Speaker 1: probably with the dough right now. So it was like
- 48:38Speaker 1: a southwest wind. There's a really good doll betting area
- 48:41Speaker 1: in the back of the farm off of bluff. Um,
- 48:44Speaker 1: I have a stand set up in this tree. That's
- 48:47Speaker 1: good for it. Yeah, that's standing in the tree. Yeah.
- 48:52Speaker 1: And then let me finish in the tree on an
- 48:55Speaker 1: inside corner. Um, it's on the inside corner downwind of
- 48:59Speaker 1: this betting area. And so years past two, you know,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you bucks will cruise the ridge that's right off the
- 49:05Speaker 1: stand and cruise obviously that dope betting area. So I've
- 49:09Speaker 1: been sitting there for quite a while and then, um,
- 49:13Speaker 1: it wasn't seen too much to get the occasional like
- 49:14Speaker 1: little dink cruising through. And then all of a sudden,
- 49:18Speaker 1: I just heard that big, deep guttural grunt. That's just
- 49:21Speaker 1: like unmistakable. You just know it's like that. It's a
- 49:24Speaker 1: big buck. Can you do that? Because you're pretty good
- 49:25Speaker 1: at make grunts. I don't know if I can do
- 49:28Speaker 1: it on the spot. Oh really good, So it's serious
- 49:34Speaker 1: talent over there. Good. Hey, can you guys vouch for
- 49:37Speaker 1: my I did? Why don't you give us? Oh? I
- 49:43Speaker 1: will try, I will try. I'm gonna pull the mic
- 49:45Speaker 1: away from my mouth here, you're I don't do a bugle.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I'm just with no just my mouth. The neighbors. O,
- 50:03Speaker 1: oh my god, that's some serious talent there, man. Okay,
- 50:10Speaker 1: I can't believe that. How much do you practice at it? Like?
- 50:13Speaker 1: What is Kylie saying about that? That's how hots I
- 50:15Speaker 1: bring Kylie in a night to the bedroom. Yeah, that's
- 50:18Speaker 1: why they had a child. And so that's however came
- 50:22Speaker 1: to me. Oh my gosh, okay, your son will hear
- 50:29Speaker 1: this podcast and wow? Ye that was great. Yeah, okay,
- 50:34Speaker 1: so back to whatever we're talking about. You hear this grunt?
- 50:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you hear the ground? Yeah? I heard that
- 50:38Speaker 1: grunt down in the bottom, you know, And then I knew, okay,
- 50:41Speaker 1: there's a big buck down there. But then I heard
- 50:43Speaker 1: like he'd be chasing around, and then I heard some
- 50:47Speaker 1: tending grunts, so I knew, okay, now there's there's a
- 50:49Speaker 1: big buck with the dot on there. But I just
- 50:51Speaker 1: could never get a get a good look at him.
- 50:54Speaker 1: It was just like flashes in this and that. And
- 50:56Speaker 1: then he occasionally um kind of worked his way away
- 51:00Speaker 1: for me down the valley, and I could hear him
- 51:02Speaker 1: just leaving, and I thought, okay, well, bummer, not going
- 51:04Speaker 1: to really see what what that was? Um great and
- 51:08Speaker 1: conor anyways, and then as a night went on, it
- 51:12Speaker 1: was like that last thirty minutes, like suns starting to set,
- 51:15Speaker 1: starting to get less light. And then all of a sudden,
- 51:19Speaker 1: I hear some footsteps and a look, and here's a
- 51:22Speaker 1: doll and she's kind of coming towards me along the
- 51:25Speaker 1: thick ridge. And then I heard that grunt again, that
- 51:28Speaker 1: big deep grunt, and I watched a little bit longer,
- 51:31Speaker 1: and then I could see him, just see rat coming
- 51:34Speaker 1: through the thick stuff. And I'm gonna interrupt real quick.
- 51:38Speaker 1: There's nothing better then a deer that's dialed in on
- 51:44Speaker 1: his dough. You know what I mean. He's grunting, you know,
- 51:46Speaker 1: and you know they're coming and he is just so
- 51:48Speaker 1: occupied with her, you know, nothing else in the world
- 51:52Speaker 1: matters to him. That's I love that. And then you
- 51:54Speaker 1: just pray that that do is gonna come by. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 51:56Speaker 1: there's no way you're gonna bring him in, right, you know,
- 51:58Speaker 1: it's it's all up to her on which way she goes.
- 52:00Speaker 1: But yeah, I was in the red that's right there.
- 52:03Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I was in the right area.
- 52:05Speaker 1: But whether they came past the standing that day, it
- 52:07Speaker 1: was just depending on where she wanted to take him
- 52:10Speaker 1: and he she was. I mean, if anybody's ever seen
- 52:13Speaker 1: a buck tending a dough like that, they move painstakingly slow,
- 52:17Speaker 1: like it is just slow, and the dough doesn't move much.
- 52:20Speaker 1: She's just standing there. Most time she'll browse a little bit,
- 52:23Speaker 1: she'll lay down, and he'll usually give her some room.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Um Unlike you know those younger box like we see
- 52:29Speaker 1: her in the rut, like you'll see younger bucks, they'll
- 52:31Speaker 1: be chasing does all over the place. Well, we don't
- 52:33Speaker 1: see that with mature box as much because they're not
- 52:35Speaker 1: stupid and they know, like they know not to push
- 52:38Speaker 1: the dough around, like if they're on hot dough, leave
- 52:40Speaker 1: her alone. You'll you'll breed her when she's ready. Yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 1: And uh so he's just he's just sitting there behind her, like,
- 52:49Speaker 1: you know, ten yards and they're just moving so slow
- 52:52Speaker 1: that it's to the point where it's like, God, I
- 52:56Speaker 1: don't know if I'm gonna have enough time. I don't
- 52:57Speaker 1: like they're gonna get here, but it's gonna be dark
- 52:59Speaker 1: and then and then I'm starting to think, how the
- 53:01Speaker 1: heck am I gonna get out of this tree stamp?
- 53:03Speaker 1: And and and and is it fair, say Rocks that
- 53:06Speaker 1: you are one to worry about stuff? He stays. He
- 53:11Speaker 1: stays streme, positive all the time. No, no situation. I was.
- 53:15Speaker 1: I was. I was calm where calm, cool and collected. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:18Speaker 1: you know sometimes you get fired up most times sometimes, Yeah, No,
- 53:22Speaker 1: I was, I was. I was good, all right, good,
- 53:24Speaker 1: I don't know, nice, nice? All right? Sorry, I'm I'm
- 53:27Speaker 1: a killer mark you are? And then you get the
- 53:32Speaker 1: job done? Well, ever worry I worry about where to sit.
- 53:36Speaker 1: I don't worry where um perfect trees. Yeah. So so anyways, he's, uh,
- 53:43Speaker 1: she's standing there. She cuts across a little trail, there's
- 53:47Speaker 1: an opening, but they're just I don't know. They're just
- 53:50Speaker 1: out of range for a comfortable shot. And she kind
- 53:54Speaker 1: of worked away parallel to me, and then she dropped
- 53:56Speaker 1: down into another valley, kind of out of out of sight.
- 53:59Speaker 1: So I thought, well, based on where she went, and
- 54:00Speaker 1: he's gonna follow her, I'm not gonna really get a shot. Um,
- 54:04Speaker 1: awesome encounter. That was great. You know, I was just
- 54:07Speaker 1: right to end the night, uh, you know, successful hunt,
- 54:11Speaker 1: even though I didn't get something. So he followed her,
- 54:13Speaker 1: did the same thing when I expected, and he was
- 54:16Speaker 1: just the whole time. He's just raking, raking, bra She's
- 54:19Speaker 1: rubbing trees. It's just awesome. It's just just a great show.
- 54:23Speaker 1: And I'm sitting in the tree and all of a sudden,
- 54:26Speaker 1: here like a little twig snap right next to me,
- 54:28Speaker 1: and that dope pops out. And I looked down and
- 54:32Speaker 1: I look at that dough and I look up at
- 54:34Speaker 1: him and I'm like, holy sh it, it's gonna happen.
- 54:38Speaker 1: And I that's what I said. I don't even think
- 54:40Speaker 1: I said it in my yes, I did. I looked
- 54:44Speaker 1: at him like it's gonna happen, and she was standing there.
- 54:47Speaker 1: He turned and walked straight to me. He stopped at
- 54:51Speaker 1: maybe like twenty yards and at this point he's facing me,
- 54:55Speaker 1: so I'm watching him and my eyes are going back
- 54:58Speaker 1: and forth and watching him and watching her her, waiting
- 55:00Speaker 1: for her to make a step to see if he
- 55:02Speaker 1: moves and makes that make takes a turn. Um. So
- 55:06Speaker 1: she did take a step, and she actually decided to
- 55:08Speaker 1: go back the way she came, and for her to
- 55:10Speaker 1: come out where she was there was there's no reason
- 55:12Speaker 1: for her to do that, Like it made no sense.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I don't even know why she did that, but I'm
- 55:15Speaker 1: glad she did. And so she made a move to
- 55:18Speaker 1: go back, and he like immediately did that spin to
- 55:22Speaker 1: go back the way it came. So he wasn't gonna
- 55:24Speaker 1: like parallel to me and go broadside. He just spun,
- 55:29Speaker 1: And at that time I knew, like, and that's one
- 55:31Speaker 1: of those things probably just where experienced, you just know
- 55:34Speaker 1: what to do at that time, because most people would
- 55:36Speaker 1: have probably just he would have spun and they would
- 55:38Speaker 1: have drew, and then they would have never stopped him.
- 55:40Speaker 1: But I drew. I like, I'm pretty sure I don't
- 55:42Speaker 1: even know what happened. It was like a blur, but
- 55:44Speaker 1: you you draw and stopped him at the same time,
- 55:46Speaker 1: and I stopped just in time where where I could
- 55:50Speaker 1: tuck it right behind his shoulder, really really strong, but
- 55:54Speaker 1: where I was comfortable and I could make a great shot.
- 55:56Speaker 1: I hit him right behind the behind the back ribs
- 56:00Speaker 1: and that buck went down like less than five seconds.
- 56:03Speaker 1: He was done, And yeah, that was that was incredible hunt.
- 56:09Speaker 1: So he talked about him a little little more. I mean,
- 56:12Speaker 1: he's got an eight inch flyer. Yah, I think I
- 56:16Speaker 1: think it's like a shoot hall On. I think it
- 56:18Speaker 1: was seven. It's like seven inches, and then if forks
- 56:21Speaker 1: it's it's real thick, kind of webbed, and then forks
- 56:24Speaker 1: off it's a great book. He's like nineteen inches wide.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Did he lose a little rack? Didn't he break off
- 56:29Speaker 1: some smaller stuff? Yeah he did. He had like a
- 56:31Speaker 1: big curly kind of point. He probably would have grossed
- 56:33Speaker 1: one seven if he had that. He busted that off,
- 56:37Speaker 1: which whatever, But that's another thing about this book. He
- 56:40Speaker 1: was kind of like he was up. Well, I saw it,
- 56:42Speaker 1: like I mentioned before, I saw him fighting Kevin vander
- 56:45Speaker 1: Boom and uh and the other years he was always
- 56:48Speaker 1: busted up. So that was one of my fears. Like
- 56:51Speaker 1: this year, I was like if I'm gonna kill him,
- 56:53Speaker 1: I gotta kill him early because he's gonna be busted
- 56:54Speaker 1: up by November. You know. Fortunately this year he just
- 56:57Speaker 1: busted off at one point and kept everything else sound intact.
- 57:01Speaker 1: But but yeah, it was a great hunt. It was awesome.
- 57:06Speaker 1: That is awesome. The best part was when I when
- 57:07Speaker 1: I killed him, I knew he was down right away,
- 57:09Speaker 1: you know, And I texted you guys in the group
- 57:11Speaker 1: text or whatever. You're horrible, but I love doing that
- 57:13Speaker 1: to you guys. We and we really really get mad
- 57:15Speaker 1: about it. You're the worst because we've got what you
- 57:19Speaker 1: leave everybody hanging. Oh yeah, I love doing that. I'm like, oh,
- 57:21Speaker 1: I just just shot Jim Lahey, you know. And then
- 57:23Speaker 1: they're all like texting back and forth. Picture it didn't happen,
- 57:25Speaker 1: because we always say picture it didn't happen, And some
- 57:27Speaker 1: of some of the guys like, who's Jim Lahey? And
- 57:29Speaker 1: then they're sending pictures. Oh my god, you know is
- 57:31Speaker 1: this one because we've been seeing pictures but Dusty. And
- 57:33Speaker 1: then I'm texting back, man, guys, I don't know, it's
- 57:35Speaker 1: gonna be a long night, you know, and stuff like that.
- 57:38Speaker 1: And then yeah, you kept him on the hook. Oh no,
- 57:41Speaker 1: I love doing that. Ross and I were the closer,
- 57:44Speaker 1: so I get some off the off the off to
- 57:48Speaker 1: the side text, Yeah, like what the hell are you
- 57:51Speaker 1: doing to those guys because just wait till tomorrow. I
- 57:54Speaker 1: don't say anything like, oh, well, you guys want pictures
- 57:57Speaker 1: all the time. And I was by myself and it
- 57:58Speaker 1: was dark and I couldn't take decent picture. That's like
- 58:01Speaker 1: I always a picture first, though, So I just took
- 58:04Speaker 1: a picture of that flyer and I sent into that like,
- 58:06Speaker 1: oh buddy, yeah, awesome, that was awesome. That was pretty incredible. Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 1: that was exciting. And then I think, if I remember right,
- 58:15Speaker 1: you killed Jim Lahey and then you text us about
- 58:19Speaker 1: it that morning, and that was the morning that Further
- 58:22Speaker 1: killed his buck. Me and Further were in Ohio. I
- 58:26Speaker 1: remember getting the text messages from you in the morning
- 58:28Speaker 1: and did kill him the same day. No, I think
- 58:30Speaker 1: you killed your buck the night before, but you were
- 58:31Speaker 1: telling us about the next morning. That's when you decided
- 58:34Speaker 1: to tell people. Yeah, so you were texting us about
- 58:36Speaker 1: Jim Lahey and then I am seeing Further's buck come
- 58:39Speaker 1: running by me and I'm like, oh, Jesus's bucking. Then
- 58:43Speaker 1: that whole thing that was a good a couple of days,
- 58:45Speaker 1: it was, it was, it was a good time. Yeah,
- 58:49Speaker 1: it was awesome. All right, Let's pause here real quick
- 58:52Speaker 1: for a word from our partners at white Tail Properties.
- 58:56Speaker 1: This week with white Tail Properties, we are joined by
- 58:59Speaker 1: Rich ba, a land specialist out of southeastern Iowa, and
- 59:03Speaker 1: Rich he's going to be telling us about how he
- 59:04Speaker 1: patterned some mature bucks without educating them. What I like
- 59:09Speaker 1: to do is, uh figure out where a buck's living.
- 59:12Speaker 1: And so during the late summer and early fall months,
- 59:15Speaker 1: I'll run trail cameras around my farm, probably one for
- 59:18Speaker 1: every forti sixty acres and try to figure out where
- 59:21Speaker 1: the different mature bucks are living. Um, you really have
- 59:24Speaker 1: to keep an eye on that, you know, once October
- 59:26Speaker 1: November get here, because they often tend to disperse and
- 59:30Speaker 1: and move around a little bit. But but I still
- 59:32Speaker 1: use cameras, and I have them in areas where you know,
- 59:35Speaker 1: I'm not going to disturb the deer to check them.
- 59:37Speaker 1: One of the things you know that that's key to
- 59:40Speaker 1: me is I just don't pressure deer. In early October,
- 59:42Speaker 1: I figure out where they're living, you know, where they
- 59:43Speaker 1: feed and then really don't hunt them until the last
- 59:46Speaker 1: week of October, one week in November, when I know
- 59:48Speaker 1: they're gonna be on there feet before dark and still
- 59:51Speaker 1: on their feet after daylight. Otherwise, you know, you risk
- 59:55Speaker 1: educating them and making them go nocturnal. If you'd like
- 59:59Speaker 1: to learn more and to see the properties that rich
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: currently has listed for sale, visit white tail properties dot
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: com backslash bo that's b A U G H. So
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: then I had a great little story there. You had
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: a great story there, Peter, what from this season do
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: you want to talk about? From here two thousand seventeen seasons?
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Is there anything that stood out? We had some great experiences. Yeah.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: As a chiropractor, I were very busy. I'm talking talking
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: deer hunting. No By'm saying yeah, but I don't. I don't. Yeah,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I don't take off a lot. I don't take off
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: a lot of time. So tell him about the plan
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: for like next year. In that public land spot that
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: we talked about years ago, I hunted the state land
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: spot and I could see this river bottom from where
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I was, and at about ten o'clock, a just a
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: giant walk through there and I put it my you know,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: put it in your mind, but you just don't think
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: about why he's there at that time in the morning.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: So it was the last one of the last eight
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: agree days, like in the middle of October. S Ross
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: and I went scouted down there for just to walk
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the property this state land. We bumped a buck that
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: went through the water and to the other side, so
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: we decided to scout a little bit better. Found some
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: early season scrapes and some robs, and I said, I'll
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: just sit up in here, you know, tomorrow or the
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: next weekend, and uh lo and behold kind of rain,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: didn't it. I don't remember. Well. I set up on
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: that deer. We came back in it was like a one,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: so we let him go and um but I wanted
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: to be in a different spot from where I was,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: but when I got in there, it was pitch dark.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: So long story short, set up in a different tree
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: than I wanted to. So I based on that experience
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: years ago, I said, I'm gonna stay a little later
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: because I think stay till like nine through to your ten.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: And I thought maybe something make sure would come down.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: But we didn't know real We didn't know why, I
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: think because it was missed at that time, I go,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I just had that experiencing, I'm going to test it,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: and it was raining, so I thought they might missing.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: I thought they might freshen up the stuff. Sure enough,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: this monster mass monster came down and just went to
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: the one tree where I wanted to be by, freshened
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: up that scrape, went right back into the tyms on that. Yeah,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: so that's massive if it's an a point or one
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: forty all day, real thick. And then if it was
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: a ten, it was pretty good size, and you know,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: and then um, so that way that that hunt, I
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: took the long wind, and then there's another way and
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: go just straight down a ridge, pair of waiters and
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: be up on it. So I started doing that for
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the rest of the year, and moved in to where
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: that deer was fresh up that scrape. And then a
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: different boat came in equally as impressive. This one was gosh,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: that frame was one frame, but that thing was yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: that was beautiful. So he came in kind of like
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: you'd want a deer to come in, and it just
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: was a little too far up. So well, now you
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: know you've got a good spot for next year, because
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you know why, now you know why the bucks are
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: doing that, you know where to be in October. I
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: think it's a they talked about that primary scrape. I
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: think it might be one, and it's a certain time frame.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I think I hunted a little bit later and it
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: wasn't as good. So yeah, so that's that. I'd say
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: mid Well, the first weekend was like twenty early and
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: that's when that mass monster came. And then the next
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: weekend I went down there again in that big big
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: eight with a or big nine with a just a
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: huge frame. Yeah. Is that the one that you had
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: a similar situation to me, sort of where you got
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: cough guard. Yeah, if you want to dig a little deeper,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: we can do that, um please. I was watching We
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: used to be able to hunt the private behind that,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: so I was watching this valley and there's always deer
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: and there, so I was kind of scoping, scoping back
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: and it's it's probably quarter to eight, you know, prime time,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: So I'm just watching back there because I did notice
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: during another hunt that a deer did cross the water
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: and it was bucked. So I'm like, I'll just check
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: what's going on. And as I turned around with my
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: binoculars in my hand. That's when that that real nice
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: second buck came through and I was not ready for him.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: So yeah, the shot would have been of my reach
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: for me possibly, but it was just nice to see.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: So well, don't feel bad about getting caught off Guarden.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Happens happens to many of us in this room, or
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: at least one other person. So, yeah, we were talking
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: about some other stuff the other night, Peter. I don't
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: know if you want to talk about it or not,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: but some of the thoughts around, um, sure, just you know,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: how to get more comfortable in those moments. There's some
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: of the things that you're talking about wanting to work
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: on this coming year. For me, it's got to be
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: at the moment of right there, like Corey talked to
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: me about after because why why at that time where
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: you looking behind you with your binoculars when you those deer,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: where do you reach Anyways? I mean he goes at
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: that time quarter to eight or seven, just as it's
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: a great light, to great light, to whenever my bows
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: in my hand, ready, he goes, They're gonna come in
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: like ghosts in the darkness, you know, and just be ready.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: So have you ever seen that movie? Oh, it's lovely. Yeah,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: that's a good movie. Good movie. You seen that Negative
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: in the Darkness. I can't stay up through any movies,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: even if it's a Rambo at four o'clock in the afternoon,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: this one, I'll check it out. What has we got,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Val Kilmer. You got Michael Michael not Michael Jackson, Michael Michael,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: not Michael Keaton, not Michael Jordan's Douglas, Michael Douglas. Thank you,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: Michael Douglas. Yeah, which is well Kilmer. And basically this
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: is talking about the man eating lions. It's the man
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Eaters of Savoy and they're in the Chicago Museum there
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: in the Chicagomy has been natural history and there was
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: this railroad trying to be built through Africa, I don't know,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: and they were stuck at a bridge point trying to
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: get the bridge and these two lions killed I don't
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: remember what the number of an astronomical number of people. Yeah,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and so the movie talks about this whole situation they
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: had up bringing a professional hunter and to try to
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: kill these man eaters and yeah, it's intense. Check it out.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: So the ghosts in the Darkness are what Peters trying
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: to prepare for yes, Traditionally, I could you imagine sitting
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: in next to a tree with man eating lions walking around?
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Could you be prepared for that moment? I have enough
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: gunpower at home, that's for sure. My dad was crystal
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: so but so sorry. No, It's been my problem continually
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: each year is the moment of truth, getting that shot,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: or I can get onder all day. I see a
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: lot of deer, so fortunate that way, but moment truth
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: is just not something I've had a lot of practice with.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: So and I think I think that it's it's something
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: that a lot of people struggle or I will wait
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: for that perfect shot. I mean, I think about how
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: many times I've had good sized deer there. And I'm
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: fairly picky too at times. But Mike, that's not I'm
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: not I'm thinking what if Coreya shot with ROSSI shot
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: most likely, but for me, I just didn't feel right.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: So I think Ross alluded to something too, when when
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: you were talking about you have so much experience in
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: these moments. When Jim Lahy started to do that turn,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: You've been through that before, You've seen that before, you knew, okay,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I need to stop and draw and take that shot
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: right now, and you knew, Yeah, it was a fast moment,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: but you you understood that, you had the time. You
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: were comfortable with that. But to Peter's point, if you
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: hadn't been through that, or if you hadn't you know,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: had been fortunate enough to kill a good number of
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: deer and go through that, it's it's a lot harder
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: to handle those moments of truth. And that's why. And
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: everyone's got to do their own thing. But I do
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: think it is helpful too when you're getting into hunting
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: to kill some does, to kill some younger bucks, to
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: take it in one step of the ladder of time.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: At least that's what worked out for me. Um, But
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I know you're you're figuring out your own kind of
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: path too. Well. Yere, I did shoot that decent buck
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: up in the same same vicinity I remember winning I
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: go one third year better and I saw it come in,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: never looked at the head again, and unfortunately shot wasn't true. Uh,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: And we I did see the buck the next day
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: he ran off with a arrow window. But so it
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: can work for me. It's just a matter of making
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: it work for me. Can I psychoanalyze you? Please do
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: on the air. So have you ever have you ever
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: thought about changing your what you want to shoot for
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: your for your bow buck for some reason? I want
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: it huge? You want? Yeah, you've been very picky about
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: that and why why is this? There's probably a little
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: bit of anxiety. But making the correct shot helling doesn't
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: come easy to me. I don't think it comes easy
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: for a lot of people, right, but just for me,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: maybe not so much. Uh, maybe there's a little bit
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: of that's my dad's bock m. I never really talked
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: about that before he's passed, and he'll never get a chance.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I want that bow one to be just pretty special. Yeah,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: maybe that's unrealistic, but yeah, that's cool. So interesting. Now
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: what about doze? Have you age your opinion not a
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: little bit? Do you want to shoot a dough? We
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: talked about this a little bit. You've been reluctant to
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: do that in the past. Um. I think if I
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: get myself more dialed in, it might be something easier.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: I'd have a I picked up at twenty acres and uh,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I can't really see that tone, but just twenty acres
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: in the outskirts of my town and there's he's an
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: eight year old man. He's like, he doesn't understand this whole.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: It's substance, this shoot this deer for somebsence. He goes, Peter,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you're gonna get a dough here? So I could see
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: that may be happening. Now that'd be cool. Yeah, that'd
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: be cool. There's nothing better, I guess. I always think
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: there's a buck coming right, so why would I? I
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: was worried that that one the one time you do
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: let the aero fly and shoot that dough, then there's
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: the the big buck walking right behind her. Yeah, October one,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: go out there a first day October two or something.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I mean mentally, I decided that before I even go hunting. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I think you're right. That's a that's a decision you
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: gotta make and play for. I'll tell you what, killing
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: heavy duty man, it's a heavy deal. There's times I considered,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: should I just be a camera guy? Hey? You know
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: it's it's not I feel like, boy, this is such
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: a complicated subject. But I mean, in Upper Mischigan I'm from,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I've shot shovel deer, small four keys and things and
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: it never felt great. But I've done it. Shoot him
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: with a bow, never with a gun and shooting him
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: a close quarters it put an arrow throom is a
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: way more intimate. If that's not I don't even know
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: if that's the right word. I think it way more
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: intimate experience. Then then shooting him with a gun, and uh,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: you know, I think I mean most people that um
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: have any sort of I don't see moral compass. Boy,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I could be pissing a lot of people off here.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: But killing is is uh something that is a powerful
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: moment and and and it's surely it's it's obviously with you.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Mark and I talked. I live in the city, so
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: I I shot my dear and I shoot in my
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: back yard. But if my wrist flicks my arrows in
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: the neighbor's yard, I'm looking for him like, well, this
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: isn't good. It's kind of selfish on my point to
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: be doing that. So I don't make it a priority
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: to get to a spot to shoot for you off.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: So I'm only shooting twenty yards in my yard or whenever.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: In reality, if you look at a hunter, I'm responsible
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: for that shot. So if I'm going out there without
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: lost confidence, I just won't take it. Then sure, yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: And then it's like Oh my gosh, I'm gonna kill
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: this thing. And this is yeah, if it's thirty like
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: that buck that came in Corey Roscoe's shop is thirty
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: five yars is beautiful. I wasn't ready because I wasn't looking.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: But if I would have been ready, but I have
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: still taken a shot, probably not. Yeah yeah. And there's
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: some world class hunters that only take yard shots. Yeah yeah.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: So there's nothing wrong with so, and that's their their decisions.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: So I learned from them. I mean, that's what they do.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Everyone's got whatever they're comfortable with that. But I have
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: a buddy who was an amazing shot and for Michigan
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: he knocked on down at fifty because he was comfortable
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: because he shoots at a hunter. Yeah, he doesn't do
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: it all the time, but no wind conditions were right
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: boom yeah yeah yeah. So what's the goal for this year, Peter?
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: And we gotta practice more? There you go. But at
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: the end of the two thousand eighteen season, when the
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: season is done and you look back on it, Okay,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: so one goal is that you want to have practiced
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: more of your bow. What other goals do and it
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: could be a kill goal or could be anything else
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: or or what what would be your goals by the
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: end of the season you hope to accomplish. Let's see, well,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: kill deer. I gotta make it just a special for me,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: that's about it. Um. I've got properties where I've got
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: big deer, and I got propertly where I have decent deer.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: So just I seem to have always waited for that
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: big one if it doesn't happen, so it's maybe just
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: get that one thirty on the ground. I got enough
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: of those one t I don't know, Yeah, so is
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: one is one thirty? What feels right? Like that's like
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: for the special? I seem to find a pointers inches
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: inches or a hundred and thirty pointers saying yeah, he's
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: saying yeah. It sounds terrible to put these kind of
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: unrealistic or just to say that it has to be this.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: It could be just anything, but or does it come
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: down to some with something me and Dami guess a
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: few weeks ago, it's like you just have that feeling
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: like that maybe that's it, but maybe that kind of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: buck for you is what you've found gives you that factor.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: And I think some of this is framed by where
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: you live in Hunt. You live in Hunt in Iowa,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: where there are lots and lots and lots of big
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: deer relative to a lot of other places. I think
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: if you lived in Michigan or you live in Pennsylvania,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you lived in wherever, and if you hadn't come out
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: here and seen experienced all this a hundred old take
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: for example, when you moved to Iowa. When you first
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: came out here, you were seeing gad and eight pointers
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: and you were thrilled, and the first one twenty I'm like, wow,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Ross is like settled down. That's right, that's a that's
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: a basket. No, no, no no, I was no. When we
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: first came two year olds like, yeah, yeah, that was
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: that was tough. Everything looks big. Most likely I should
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: just shoot a deer to get it out, anything to
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: get out of the system. Build a confidence. Absolutely, there's
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: a lot of reality to that, and there's a there's
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: that's an admirable, admirable thing man going out there and
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: just taking an apple animal and being happy with it,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: regardless of what anybody else thinks. I mean, that's because
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: muscle literally killed a beautiful buck and shout right through
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: the heart, died within thirty ft where three yards where
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I shot him and it was great. Yeah. Yeah, And
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I think I think the gun is less intimate, but
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it's more it's a competence. Yeah. And I would never
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: want to try to impose on you like and I
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: hope we're not doing that. No, But that's the biggest
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: thing is your values are yours mine or mine? And
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: mine are great and so are yours? Yeah, and so
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: if you if you want to hold out for a
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: special buck, more power to nothing wrong with that at all.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: But you know, but I can but seriously, I can't
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: call myself a hunter. I am a goes out hunting. Well,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: it does not kill, I'm not killer. Maybe, And from
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: a from a purely pragmatic, pragmatic standpoint though, simply from
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: what will help you be more successful as a hunter?
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Killing more does or taking a first step and killing
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: the first Bucky get a chance they're doing that a
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: few times will help you in the future. And I
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: know you know this we've talked about. I mean, if
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: this isn't rocket science, um, but if there's nothing wrong
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: with choosing not to do that, but it's something to consider.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Like Ras said, those experiences are what helped prepare you
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: for the moment when you do have that special buck
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: in front of you, because it's a lot harder to
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: do that in the very if, if the very first
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: buck you ever shoot with the bow is a hundred
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: sixty mega giant or something, that's a tough moment to
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: handle the first time. Now I know you've shot. They're
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: dear too, But no, you know we got the story
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: where last I think we shared it last podcast where
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: that one pointer came in and jumped the did everything
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: read the read the script? I shot a gangster style
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: because of how I had to, and my wrist must
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: have flicked at the last What does this wrist flicking
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: thing you keep saying that you do? I do it.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I used to shoot my condo and I for some
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: reason rist wood flick target panickers could be yeah, I've
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: in your condo. Yeah you hit the wall. Yeah, my
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: wife was not impressed. Yeah. Yeah. There's one time I
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: was shooting in the basement of a place where you're renting, ah,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: and I had the target set up in the air,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: went through the target and it hit the water pipe
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: off beat below the shut off valve to eight units.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Oh no, yeah, talk about so what does that do
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: you say type two or level two? Usually type two?
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Is that type two? Far? Yeah? Well, yeah, like it
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: was the most It was a terrible experience at the time,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: but now it's hilarious when I think about it. But
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: uh yeah, water just it was just so much force
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: coming out everywhere. I was filling up coolers and running
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: up to until like a plumber came. I can only
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: imagine what you were I was looking like at that moment.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Big mistake. So yeah, be careful when you're shooting, because
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: even when you hit the target, still can you should
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: blind bail man? Do you have a blind bail You
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: know what that is? I think there's a podcast The
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Guy Talk we talked about leave. I'm just at ten
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: yards of five yards and just three yards no, just no,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: You're not gonna miss. And you shoot with your eyes closed,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: and you get used to the feet release of the arrow,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: and you feel that arrow send and and and you
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: don't you don't react to it. It just goes. And
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: you do that with your eyes closed, and and you
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: build confidence internally, you know. I mean, yeah, I think
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: in some respects I thought about this show. I got
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: maybe I should learn my everything about scouting, hunting. I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: could relay a lot of stuff when I get in
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: a train. It's a little different than the textbook goes
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: away and you're like, how do you read this? I'm
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: I'm probably a good be on that stuff a lot
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: of other stuff. Hey, but knowing a bow and probably
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: a c I don't you know. I think that's just
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: to me. It's a tool. I go grab it and
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: use it. But how do I know it better? How
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: do I know what these You know some of the
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: how the setup is, how that works for it. And
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: I think that's a good idea. Yeah, And I think
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: I think you're sharing your experiences right here and your
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: some of your struggles and your thoughts stuff. This is
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: really helpful stuff for a lot of people. It's important
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: stuff talking about because I think so much of what
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: you get in the hunting media today and sometimes we're
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: guilty of this too. We've got the best deer hunters
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: in the world on here who seemed invincible and their
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: ice cold and oh my gosh, this guy kills a
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: big de kills four big mature bucks every year. It
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: can seem kind of daunting, like how can I stack
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: up to that? And it's important to remember the world
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: just people. We all make mistakes, and each one of
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: us are at a different place, and we have our
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: own stroke and challenges. And I think hearing about stuff
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: you're going through in the decisions and things you're trying
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: to figure out, that looks back to the old videos.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I had a lot of deer in there, but never kill. Yeah,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: you've you've certainly seen a lot, and you've had en calendars,
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: and you've had opportunities and but it's not easy take
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: that final stuff. Well, we always talk about what you
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: think about your bring about. I never think about the
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: kill part. Always thought about all the other stuff involved
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: with hunting. Yeah, it's interesting you you talk a lot
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: about one one time we're uh one time we can.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: I tend to use humor to escape the reality of
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: not shooting. One time we were down here shed hunting
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: and we get into Peter's truck and we hadn't been
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: riding him, We had not been due, we hadn't been
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: riding with so no one had been in this truck
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: prior to this. So we hopped into his car. So
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: I had my fun in my pocket was outside and
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: in my circle. You record self affirmations you hear it's
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: really big on self improvement. Different. It was like, yeah,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: so you tell yourself and stuff enough, it's gonna just
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: implant your subconscious in it. Your body has nothing, your
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: mind will attract it to you. So the car comes
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: on and then on the speakers really loud, Peter Lynch,
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: you will gross X hundreds of thousand dollars or whatever.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Peter Lynch, you will that. He was repeating these goals.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: We just died. That's funny. Did yes, I have had
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: a boy. Well to you, my practice gets that income.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: I don't know what. I don't know what the dollar yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: but to the point of vision. But if you don't
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: put that into your your hobby, yeah, it's not gonna
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: be something. Yeah like Ross. I know Ross God, he
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: manifests everything into his life because he thinks about Corey.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: They all thinks about his bucks. You saw that today.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: He actually has a I think I think I saw
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: him make a scrape, piss on his back legs a
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: little bit. I kind of rubbed him together look back.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: You know it just carried on. But you know something
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: I do to your point about um handling that moment,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: the truth, I'm betting Ross you probably do this. Maybe
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: I think you've talked about it, maybe you two two Ben.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: But when I get into a tree stand, I get
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: all set up. Once I'm all settled, and one of
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: the very first things I do is I look at
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: each one of my different shooting lanes or different places
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: where a deer might be able to come through, and
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: I imagine, okay, if there's a buck coming through here,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: and I visualize a buck coming through this way, visually,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: I actually will make sure I can draw back and
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: visualize hold my bow drawn about. Okay, could I shoot
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: theory up? Can I imagine I'm visualizing a deer come
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: this direction, Okay, imagine drawing back. Yep, I can get
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: a shot there. I will do that in every different,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: every different way. So you think through what that scenarre
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: will look like. You're also seeing. Can I maneuver? Can
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I get my arm drawn back? Can I do all
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: these different things? If that happened, If that happened, if
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: that happened. And I think that that really helps me
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: remember as a kid and I was shooting the backyard
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: u Permichigan, just with those basic bowls, just you pull back, boom,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: let go, and remember the deer. I we talked that deer.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I did she with with the bow and penetrated And
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: remember when I got up there, everything was perfect. That's
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: the one where I said, I'm gonna get a one thirty.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: I saw the deer, identified it as a shooter. I
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: didn't look at it again, actually had the camera perfect,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: pulled back and then when I got through the peep sid,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I'm like, where am I? Because I couldn't identify were
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: I had to look away and come back again. And
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: then that was it. That's where it went a half
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: inch high, put that right in the shoulder blade, penetrated
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: maybe an inch two inches and there lived. So yeah,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: it's all those a thousand tiny little things in the
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: last one second can go wrong, and it's we've all
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: been there, brother battle and battle and the inner demons,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: and uh, if you want to you know, if if
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: it's important to you to work through them, it's it'll happen,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: you know. And so yeah, anyone that's listening to this
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: podcast has heard that. I've had plenty of my own
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: struggles that way too, Dan Johnson as well, and we've
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: all we all have absolutely love so well. I hope
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that we get you on here and the Fall of
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: two has an eighteen. Peter with your story of the
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: successful hunt. Me and Corey always talk about We talked
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: about you a lot, you know, Peter, I know I
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: feel it, and we we talked. You know what, when
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Peter does get that buck, it's going to probably be
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: the biggest buck to any of us are ever killed.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: You probably will end up that first one. It's going
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: to be that one in the public land. And he
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: was talking about the big frame. Yeah, I like to
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: see like a hundred. Then that property again, a little
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: property had it's a twenty, and it was pretty amazing.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: A lot of big deer ahead all year, and I
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: didn't see too many during the hunting time frame, but
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I felt like a monster could come from this ridge
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: through the paragraphs, through this little twenty to go somewhere
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: else to check those And and I had sat too
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: long the day before. I was really extremely crabby. All
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: days sit too early. Remember this, You were crabby too, Yeah,
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: next day, I compare, I could barely sleep, and Ross
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: text me, let's get breakfast, Like yes, I'm walking back
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: from my stand through this twenty and my truck is
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: only five yards away. I can see it and that's
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: hard to you know, like, let's go, we can do it.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: There was a one seventy coming through the progress, like
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: I kind of thought would happen, and it didn't happen
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: because you're you're already walking to breakfast. That's all right,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: but you know who knows with that deer when I
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: came back by where I was, but I think I
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: could have saw him, So that's something because Sam and
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: just let him go buy me because I didn't shoot him. Joking,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: of course, but joking of course. All right, Peter, any
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: final thoughts from you, any final things you want to cover? No,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: I think we're good. Well, why I love hunting bigfoot.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: That's maybe for another time. You are a squatch believer,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: aren't you. It's just entertaining entertainment. Yeah, if you get
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: lost on YouTube, go down a rabbit hole like a
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: big foot. Let's check it out and you're listening to it. Okay, So,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: but Ross made a Ross made a buck grunt and
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: I made an elk bugle. I heard you can do
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: a pretty good squatch call. I don't know you've sent
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: us a you've sent us a video of you making
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: a squatch call before. Yeah, he's ross is kind of
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: an instigator. It sounds like a World War two areas. Yeah,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: come on, we should I do it really loud? Sure?
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: Why not? Just move the speakers away? I kind of
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: like kind of that guy that of the group that
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: is the you're good at it? Yeah, thank you appreciate that.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: But you are. You are the wild card of our
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: group when especially when Dan's not here, You're the wild card. Ben.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Have you ever heard one of these? Before you're ready?
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: It's supposed to sound like a World War two World
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: War two air raids siren. And we'll do it for
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: your audience because this is what they're tuning in for.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: That is that a male or female? That's an alpha male?
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Because I did it. It's an alpha squatch and it's
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: important to be doing gifting. I gifted a little bit
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: out of your property today. Just say no, what does
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: that mean? Uh? Young snickers and apples? Just leave him
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: there for first watch? Yeah? What does this do for them?
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Keep him on the property? It just keeps him there.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: And there wasn't well, there was no tree breaking. That
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: what that mean? Would you if you ran into squatch?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: Would you mess with them? Or I would leave? You
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: would leave, they're dangerous. Yeah. Wow, to see again rabbit
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: hole on YouTube, you just listen to stuff like wow,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: this is there's the whole world subculture tell us what
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: we need to watch out for. Alright, So let's say
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: you're in said stand alright, stand said stand the stand
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: where you're hunting. You're in the stand up and we've
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: all had this where the everything goes quiet, So there
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: could be a predator nearby. But if there's oh gosh,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm putting myself out here like this.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: Remember his chiropractic practice. Yeah shit. But but you know,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: it's it's just purely entertainments. And so then the people say,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: if you smell sewer next to you, there's probably a
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: sasquatch running around trying to get you. You're gonna get
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: a whole new honest, because there's you're gonna subtitle sasquatch
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: and the talking points and people are going to tune
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: into this. You're welcome. So yeah, sorry, continue, that's what
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: he smells were gas. That's a problem, Yeah, because they
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: smelled atrocious. So if it's so, if you're the whole
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: point of this is there's this book called four one
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: one David Polate is missing and it kind of gets
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: into it. So it's an interesting book about disappearances on
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: national parks. We're going down to different We're going somewhere,
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: but this is a there's a lot more. Yeah, so
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: it's just ire. Yeah, tree knock and well you were
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: knocking last week. I hang, I hang with the weird
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: crew here. Ben. Well, when it's snowing out in your
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: shed hunting, it's like, what else are we gonna do?
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: What is tree knocking? Oh gosh, that's when we must
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: have watched Bobo on Discovery finding Bigfoot. You hit a
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: tree with a stick, and that's how. That's how, That's
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: how they communicate with each other. Okay, Yeah, it's kind
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: of like yeah, yeah, it's like, well, it's like a
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: sasquatch will say I'm over here, and then it could
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: be communicating to another scat squatch over here. These people, Yeah,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: there's this many that they have an intricate communication. The
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: Geese they have a sentinel who will sit high and
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: watch everything and communicate to the others, and then they
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: knock on trees. Yes to let it. There's no Oh
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: you must have been reading about this. No, I'm learning
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: no kind of inspiration here. Well, so I don't know, yeah,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: where I got it right. Well, it's been nice knowing
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: you Mark. Thanks for having me on the podcast again
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: until next year. Any any final thoughts, Peter, we'll go
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: around the around the horn here and wrapping out. I
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: just think it's it's been a great day. Thank you
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: for let us walk the property. Appreciate it. Yeah, good time.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Ross thought Ben thinks a lot. It was a great time. Um,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: great people. Yeah, that was. Everybody's just awesome, And uh,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: I think it was just it was super fun watching
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: everybody get excited finding those sheds, and I just hung
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: back watch everybody. It was. It was awesome. And because
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: we're also pick up twenty if I wish that, Yeah,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: if I wasn't worried about finding sheds myself, what I
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: should have been doing was like I should have stood
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: on a hill and just videotape the whole thing and
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: just seeing that scatter and all the exciting it was
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: quite entertaining. That would have been great. It was, it was.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: It was a great time. Shed hunting is just awesome
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: because you know, deer hunting a lot of times it's solo,
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: you know, and and everybody kind of does their own thing,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: but getting together shed hunting you can when else can
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: you mess around the woods like that with a group
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: of people and have a good time and sure and
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: uh have some good laughs. And you don't get to
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: really do that during deer season as much unless you
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: have like a deer camp or something like that. So
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: so I always look forward to this time here. We
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: need a deer camp. No, I'm really glad you guys
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: came down. Had an absolute blast mission accomplished today, right,
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I mean, we we found some has a bit more
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: importantly we had we had a ton of fun, and um,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: it's awesome get to know you guys a little bit.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of good things about you. So
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: it's great to spend a day within uh you know,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: going back to shed rally. I mean it's uh pretty
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: rewarding whenever you get some people out there that don't
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: necessarily have any familiar familiarity with hunting or anything, and
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: and uh you can let him into our world a
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: little bit, and uh, we need to do more of
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: that is what it comes down to, right, And you
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: know we're not gonna get into this big I'm not
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: gonna get on this big pulpit or whatnot. But it's
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: a good thing to introduce somebody to the outdoors and um,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: you know, hey, we we did that today. Shut. Hunting
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: is a good way to do that. Absolutely, just a
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: fun excuse to walk in the woods and enjoy camaraderie
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: and have a good time. Yeah, so we did it. Awesome.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Well I'll just uh, I'll end with a little plug
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: for our buddy. If you need a map for your property,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Ben makes the best ones out there. You do some awesome,
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: awesome work with Hunt Terror maps. I love my map.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I got him on the wall behind me so I
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: sit there at the computer desk working and then I
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: can spin around and look up there and daydream and
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: think about where I'd rather be in a tree. Um.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: I sent to my brother for Christmas, even he hadn't
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: heard of Hunter, and he's blown away. It's going to
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: be in a picture frame basically in our house or
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: his camp. Awesome. So yeah, so he's pretty pumped. It's
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: very cool. And as we alluded to earlier, the mobile
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: map was really was a really cool tool today too,
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: So he's super useful. So I'm glad you glad you
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: guys like him, keep up the good work man, And
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: where can we find that stuff online? H Hunter dot com.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: That's uh, that's where where we are. We got we
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: ramped up our our social media presence. We're doing a
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: lot of um, a lot of posts with Instagram and
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: facebooks to look us up on there as well. Awesome,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: Thanks guys, Thank you looking forward this looking forward to
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: shed really two pieces and that's a rap, folks. Hope
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: you enjoyed this strange, wandering, bizarre conversation. We we certainly
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: enjoyed it at least, so uh. Just a final reminder,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: like I said at the very beginning, we've got the
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: live podcast this Saturday, March seventeen, two thousand and eighteen.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: Really hope to see you guys there and hope to
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: share a cold beverage with you as well at the
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: podcast or afterwards at the b h A pint night.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: It's gonna be a lot of fun. Uh. And then finally,
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: just want to say thank you to our partners for
