- 0:00Welcome back to another episode of Health with Hashimoto's. I am so excited
- 0:03for you to hear from my guest.
- 0:05Today, I have Bria Sharon Estep. She is a former Mrs.
- 0:10United States in 2021. That was her title. She is a board certified integrative health practitioner.
- 0:16She's a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, business coach,
- 0:19keynote speaker, and an author.
- 0:21She wrote the Holistic Health Clean Eating Cookbook. She has over a decade of
- 0:26experience in the health and fitness industry,
- 0:28and she uses her health struggles and education to teach and coach women to
- 0:33find the underlying root cause of their health concerns to finally get their
- 0:37health and body back holistically.
- 0:40Bria, I'm so excited that you're here because this podcast is all about getting
- 0:44to the root causes and helping people get their health back.
- 0:47So will you start out by telling us a little bit about your story?
- 0:50This kind of bio, it doesn't come without pain and struggles and an experience. So tell us your story.
- 0:57Yeah. Oh, my goodness, Esther. I'm so glad to be here and just so excited to
- 1:00have this conversation.
- 1:02Yeah. How I got into integrative health truly is my story.
- 1:06And that's why I love talking about it. And that's why I do what I do.
- 1:11So I guess long story short, for me, it was a hot scorcher summer day here in
- 1:15North Carolina. And I had just finished my afternoon shift at work.
- 1:19See, I had owned a gym and I was doing all of the things. I owned my personal
- 1:23training studio gym that I ran full time. I was going to school full time.
- 1:27I was bouncing back after just helping my dad or my mom take care of my dad
- 1:31who unfortunately passed away from a brain tumor.
- 1:34I was doing 20 plus fitness competitions. I was coaching fitness competitions.
- 1:37I even had a social life again like doing it all.
- 1:41Until I wasn't. So there I was standing at the bottom of the stairs after I
- 1:44just finished my afternoon shift at work, and it took me a little bit more than
- 1:48a lot of effort to get out of the car.
- 1:51And I remember standing there, and I was looking up at the bottom of my stairs,
- 1:55or looking up from the bottom of my stairs, and I didn't think I could make
- 1:59it up the flight of stairs.
- 1:59I was in my 20s, in my mid-20s, and I was physically exhausted.
- 2:05I was dealing with chronic pain and, you know, just not feeling great.
- 2:09I gained 30 pounds in less than three months.
- 2:11And I was doing all of the right stuff. I owned a gym. So I was working out
- 2:15six days a week with cardio and weights. And I was eating no sugar.
- 2:18And I was eating low carb.
- 2:20And again, I was doing fitness competitions. So I was doing all of the right
- 2:23things. And the pounds just kept pecking on.
- 2:25And so I was physically exhausted. But I was also mentally and emotionally exhausted,
- 2:30as I'm sure many of our listeners have felt as well.
- 2:33Because there I was trying to tell all of these women and some men too.
- 2:37But what to do, you know, work out more, eat less, and, you know, just be active.
- 2:41And the pounds kept pecking on. I felt like an imposter.
- 2:44And I took it out on anybody and everybody around me like an emotional wrecking ball.
- 2:48And so I got into integrative health. You probably, like we heard in the bio,
- 2:53Mrs. United States 2021, happy, fit, and healthy.
- 2:56Couldn't be more, couldn't be more grateful. But that's why I've made it my
- 2:59mission to, to do exactly what I do to help women heal holistically. So that's how I thought.
- 3:05That is a huge story. And you mentioned to me earlier that you had an autoimmune
- 3:11condition, and it is now fully in remission.
- 3:14I know that is the dream for so many people. Can you tell me about that?
- 3:18Yeah, yeah. I was diagnosed, I say, a decade plus of doctors and drugs,
- 3:22prescription drugs. My husband's in law enforcement, so I have to say that.
- 3:26But it just sounds better, you know, all the alliteration.
- 3:30But yeah, I was diagnosed with, I'm going to try and remember everything for
- 3:34us here, thyroid adrenal hormone issues.
- 3:37I was dealing with estrogen lower than that. Somebody postmenopausal in my 20s.
- 3:41So dealing with hot flashes in my 20s. That's super fun to try and explain.
- 3:45Scoliosis rare type of spina bifida fibromyalgia the
- 3:50Raynaud's that we were talking about before let's see
- 3:52I was dealing with skin issues like skin
- 3:55rashes eczema psoriasis kind of a mix between the two trying to think what else
- 4:01infertility seven years of infertility and then again hormones all over the
- 4:05place so I've been diagnosed with a lot and now I don't take any medication
- 4:10and again and pretty good,
- 4:13other than a little cranky here and there,
- 4:16a little sore if I work out too hard.
- 4:19Other than that, good to go. So, super- That is amazing.
- 4:23Wow. What was the biggest thing that turned your health around?
- 4:26Was there one thing, or was it a lot of little things?
- 4:29So, yes and no. The one thing for me was, I had tried everything. So, I had tried keto.
- 4:35I was like, oh, let me try vegan. Let me do this, let me do that.
- 4:37Let me try CrossFit. Let me do that. Let me do intermittent fasting.
- 4:41So I was doing, again, literally all of the things, and all of the things that
- 4:45had worked before weren't working for me.
- 4:47It's not like I was sitting on the couch eating Chips Ahoy and Oreo cookies.
- 4:50I mean, it's one thing if you're doing that and you're frustrated with your
- 4:53health, and I'm sure so many of our listeners have felt the same way.
- 4:57Like, I'm doing all of the things. I'm not eating that bad. It's not like I'm,
- 5:01again, eating Chips Ahoy and Oreos and Fritos and Cheetos and Doritos and all
- 5:05those and sitting on the couch. I'm active.
- 5:07I'm eating healthy. what's going on. So for me, it was figuring out that my
- 5:14body wasn't broken. That was number one.
- 5:16So our bodies are designed to heal. I'm a big person of faith.
- 5:20That's how what I believe God designed our bodies to heal.
- 5:22They're not broken. They're trying to tell us something.
- 5:25So we just have to know how to listen. We need to be able to listen to the whisper
- 5:30before our bodies start to scream.
- 5:32And why is because it's not the same.
- 5:37So yes, keto can work for some people, and I can get into that.
- 5:41And another point in time for women after 21 days, maybe 28,
- 5:46it's too much stress on the body, especially women of childbearing ages.
- 5:49But everything takes a back burner to stress, and that's what I didn't realize.
- 5:54And that stress for all of us manifests differently. It's internal stress and external stress.
- 5:59So what affects the brain affects the gut and what affects the gut affects the brain.
- 6:03So my internal stress that I was dealing with, with candida bacterial yeast
- 6:06overgrowth and heavy metal toxicities and parasites and all of that.
- 6:11Yes, I was dealing with lots of external stress, but my body couldn't heal itself
- 6:15because I wasn't getting to the underlying root cause of exactly what's going on.
- 6:20So it was knowing my specific toxicities and my specific deficiencies to eliminate
- 6:25those toxicities, to replace those deficiencies, to get my body back to a state
- 6:29of equilibrium where it can heal itself, which it completely did.
- 6:33That's awesome. And I love that you don't, like some people in medicine,
- 6:38they're like a one size fits all.
- 6:40I love that you're not that because that's not the human body.
- 6:43We're all so bio-individual.
- 6:45We're different emotionally and spiritually.
- 6:48We all have our own unique spot. And I love that you recognize that and honor
- 6:55that. So when you're working with somebody, I know in your integrative space,
- 6:59you talk a lot about labs and hormones and all the testing.
- 7:03So my audience, they're familiar with, you know, TSH, free T4,
- 7:08free T3, reverse T3, the main thyroid labs.
- 7:13And, you know, side note, listener, go back to the first episode.
- 7:17Episode, I think maybe three covers labs.
- 7:20And we have other ones to go in depth on those things.
- 7:23If you're like, Esther, no, no, I'm not actually familiar with those.
- 7:26But Bria, can you tell us, like, let's go beyond those.
- 7:31What else would you look at? Why are those not enough?
- 7:35Yeah. So one thing that I'll say, too, and this is why I got into the integrative
- 7:39functional medicine side is because my doctor would look at my labs and, oh, you're fine.
- 7:45You know, just eat less and work out more. I'm starving. Literally, I'm starving.
- 7:50Workout six days a week. It's my job. Like that's not working for me. Like what else?
- 7:55You're fine. Your labs are fine, but I don't feel fine. So what I didn't know
- 8:00is blood's a homeostatic fluid.
- 8:02So it's going to pull from wherever it needs to in order to stay at homeostasis.
- 8:06So just because your labs are fine doesn't mean that they're necessarily fine.
- 8:11So women that are diagnosed, women that have osteoporosis, we might not actually
- 8:17be able to see it in the blood because the blood's pulling from where it needs
- 8:19to to be able to stay level at homeostasis.
- 8:23But when we look at like a hair tissue mineral analysis, we can see that calcium depleted.
- 8:28So that's why I love functional medicine labs. And for hormones and thyroid,
- 8:33I look through actually saliva.
- 8:35It actually goes, it's more stable when it gets back to the lab.
- 8:39It's a better read for your hormones.
- 8:41And also thyroid adrenal hormones are all so related that we need to see that whole picture.
- 8:48I need to see everything going on. I don't, you know, yes, blood work is beneficial,
- 8:54and I highly, highly recommend at least annually getting your blood work,
- 8:57but it's only a piece of the puzzle.
- 8:59Let's look through saliva. And I'm looking at, so let me back up just a little
- 9:05bit, and I'm going to kind of get nerd for our listeners here today,
- 9:09but everything takes a back burner to stress. And again, this is where I went wrong.
- 9:14But when your body's in a stressed out state, its primary focus is to produce cortisol.
- 9:19The inflammation hormone, which, yes, we want some of, but when we're stuck
- 9:23in a chronic fight or flight, that's when it becomes a problem.
- 9:26So again, our bodies aren't broken. They're designed to heal.
- 9:30If I'm getting chased by a bear, I don't want to be like, hey,
- 9:33Mr. Bear, hold on. I'm going to need a snack break.
- 9:37Hang on, Mr. Lion. I'd love to continue this chase, but I've got to take a potty break.
- 9:43No, everything down regulates to produce cortisol. So our immune system takes a back burner.
- 9:48Our digestion takes a back burner because we don't have time for a potty break
- 9:51or a snack break when we're getting chased by a bear. Again,
- 9:54our bodies aren't broken.
- 9:55So when our immune system, you know, we end up getting sick.
- 9:59And when our digestion takes a back burner, we're not able to extract the nutrients
- 10:03that we need to convert T4 to T3, the usable form.
- 10:08We aren't able to get the selenium and the iodine and all that.
- 10:10We're not able to break down the healthy food properly because our digestion is downregulated.
- 10:15Also, when our digestion down regulates, we're not able to get rid of those toxins.
- 10:19And then all of that ferments in our gut. And you know, when you like open up,
- 10:23I'm trying to think of something that pops, like a champagne bottle that...
- 10:26That's what happens when everything ferments, and then we have all of the gas
- 10:30and digestion issues and all of that when everything ferments.
- 10:33And then our sleep takes a back burner because if I'm getting chased by a bear
- 10:38or a lion or something, I don't want to go into a deep sleep.
- 10:41I can't rest. I can't recover. I can't rejuvenate. So I'm looking at all that,
- 10:46but also, and again, this is the key for me, what happens is when our bodies
- 10:51are in that stressed out state, the primary focus is to produce cortisol.
- 10:55But the same precursors that go to produce cortisol also go over to produce progesterone.
- 11:01So progesterone is our mother hormone that controls our other hormones.
- 11:04So especially with women, our hormones are going up and down in our luteal and
- 11:07follicular phases all throughout our cycle.
- 11:10So again, that's why blood work is not always great because,
- 11:12yes, your blood work could be great for the luteal phase. But is it great for the follicular phase?
- 11:16That's why I don't always love blood work for hormones, which is,
- 11:20again, so related to thyroid.
- 11:23But when all of those other hormones are doing a dance and our progesterone
- 11:27is way too low, I'm looking at the progesterone to estrogen ratio versus just
- 11:33a straight-out estrogen ratio, just a T3, T4, all of that stuff.
- 11:38In integrative health and functional medicine labs, we actually look at things
- 11:42before they get to be a problem.
- 11:44So your primary care physician, your OBGYN, and again, let me just say this too.
- 11:49I think doctors have our best interest at heart, exceptions to every rule.
- 11:52But most people go into a doctor's office and what do they want?
- 11:56They want a drug and a diagnosis.
- 11:57What's a doctor going to give to you in the maybe 10 minutes?
- 12:00Maybe if you're lucky, 10 minutes they have with you, a drug and a diagnosis.
- 12:03What are they going to study? Drugs and diagnoses, because that's what most people want.
- 12:06But again, for people like me
- 12:08that were like, oh, there's something else going on. Like, what can I do?
- 12:13There's not a lot. We're not able to talk about that sleep that we talked about.
- 12:17How's your sleep? What are you eating? We're not able to talk about all of those things.
- 12:22So when all of this dance is going on we're not able to see to see the whole
- 12:27picture how stressed is your body we're not able to to get into all that did
- 12:31that answer your question i kind of no that was awesome i and the quote that
- 12:36i'm going to take away from this whole episode.
- 12:39Is listen to the whisper before your body has to yell like i mean just that
- 12:43one sentence oh my goodness yes now i stole that i don't remember where i saw
- 12:48so like don't don't give me full credit for it.
- 12:50But yeah, but it makes so much sense.
- 12:53Yes. Our body is always trying to communicate.
- 12:56So when you do the saliva test, do people do it from home or how does that work?
- 13:00Yes. So everything that I do in functional medicine labs that I run are all at home.
- 13:05So you just spit into a tube four times throughout the day. I want a four point cortisol test.
- 13:09I don't want it just first thing in the morning, which honestly,
- 13:12if you go to your doctor's office, it's not like you just magically like, oh, I'm here.
- 13:17You know, we got to get up and drive and hopefully, you know,
- 13:19brush our teeth and all of these other things before we get to the doctor's office for our blood.
- 13:23But when we do them at home, everything is right there. And then we just ship it off to the lab.
- 13:27The lab sends me the results as an integrative health practitioner.
- 13:31And the client and I go over those lab results together, as well as the protocols to rebalance.
- 13:36Again, we're eliminating those toxicities, replacing those deficiencies to get
- 13:40the body in a position in order to heal itself.
- 13:44So if somebody came to you and say, Bria, I have Hashimoto's.
- 13:48I know that, you know, my TSH was this. I'm on this medication.
- 13:53What else are you going to look at? Are you going to do a full like hormone
- 13:57panel? Are you going to get hair too?
- 13:59Or what's, I guess, what's the minimum?
- 14:02And then what's the full package? What would you want if budget wasn't an issue?
- 14:06If budget's not an issue, what I would love to see is my big five functional
- 14:11medicine labs. So a hair tissue mineral analysis.
- 14:14The reason that I want to see this is minerals are spark plugs in life as well
- 14:18as they buffer stress for us.
- 14:20So this shows me how stressed the body is as well as how that stress is affecting
- 14:24the body. It's just a simple hair sniff.
- 14:27As well as, again, we talked about the gut. Everything takes a back burner to
- 14:30stress and our immune system.
- 14:3270% of our immune system is produced in our gut.
- 14:35You know, all of this stuff we're on a gut brain loop is going on in our gut.
- 14:39And again, if I can't break down my food properly, I'm not extracting the nutrients
- 14:42that I need in order for all of those biochemical reactions to work every single day.
- 14:47So I want to see just an at-home urine sample.
- 14:51That's super awesome to see. And again, I want to see that saliva test that's
- 14:54going to show me, yes, your TSH, your T3.
- 14:57Oh, I know what I was going to say. In integrative health, we look at things
- 15:01through a different scope as well.
- 15:03So I'm addressing a problem before it becomes a problem.
- 15:06So your TSH, I'm looking. If you have symptoms, I'm going to go ahead and start addressing at a 2.
- 15:11If you don't have symptoms, at least a 2.5 instead of a 4 or 4.5 like conventional
- 15:15medicine because I want to prevent the screaming. I want to hear the whisper.
- 15:20So I'm looking at that saliva test that's going to show me thyroid adrenal hormone.
- 15:24It's going to show me the TSH. It's going to show me my estrogen to progesterone
- 15:27ratio, my DHEA's, four-point cortisol test, TSH, testosterone.
- 15:34What else did I not say? Vitamin D3.
- 15:36That's all in that saliva lab right there. I'm also looking at a food sensitivity
- 15:40lab of almost 200 different foods to know your specific sensitivity.
- 15:45So just because you're eating something that's healthy doesn't necessarily mean
- 15:50that it's healthy for your body, especially if there's a gut and dysbiosis where
- 15:53your body can't break it down properly.
- 15:55And then the hair lab also is going to show me toxic metals as well.
- 16:00And then an omega-3 inflammation lab to see where our inflammation levels are
- 16:04because heart disease is the number one killer of women.
- 16:07If we can get your omega-3 to 6 ratio,
- 16:11where it needs to be, we can reduce the risk of all cardiovascular disease-related
- 16:17death. There we go. Say that five times fast. I can't.
- 16:20By 90, 90%. So that's a huge one too.
- 16:23So if I can, I want to see all of those labs instead of, oh,
- 16:26it could be heavy metal toxicity that's throwing this off, that's throwing this off.
- 16:30Well, it could be a gut issue that's throwing this off, that's throwing this
- 16:32off. Well, it could be this.
- 16:34Basically, genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger.
- 16:37And yes, lifestyle because of what we do, but also from the toxins in our environment,
- 16:42so many that we can't control.
- 16:44So that's why when somebody is like, hey, I have Graves' disease.
- 16:49Okay, so just because one person has Graves' disease and another person has
- 16:54Graves' disease, it's not always necessarily the same cause that's causing it.
- 17:00So that's why we need to look specifically at what's going on for you,
- 17:04your specific toxicities, your specific deficiencies in order to eliminate those
- 17:08toxicities and replace those deficiencies.
- 17:11Yes, so much yes. So if somebody can't do the big five, what would be the bare minimum?
- 17:18Again, it depends on symptoms. Normally what I do with a client is I get them
- 17:22to do a 100-ish question intake form.
- 17:25It's a lot. It is a lot. It's a lot. But I want to know everything.
- 17:28And then I want to piece together the puzzle and see exactly what you need.
- 17:33Normally, if I can only pick one lab, I want to see a hair tissue mineral analysis
- 17:38because everything takes a back burner to stress like we talked about.
- 17:41And those minerals give us our energy like our spark plugs for life,
- 17:44but they also buffer that stress.
- 17:46So that's normally where I start to get the minerals right.
- 17:50In order to be able to do all that we need to do to reduce that stress,
- 17:54then we can go into the gut and that stress affects, of course,
- 17:57thyroidotretinal hormone.
- 17:58So that's what we're looking at normally first. Again, depending on symptoms,
- 18:02though, but if somebody is, you know,
- 18:04dealing with major digestive issues we might start with
- 18:07a gut lab first or something like that so it really depends on on what's
- 18:10going on okay so now i have a question i don't even have it with me i once got
- 18:16a hair tissue mineral analysis for free and i never did it because i was worried
- 18:22about cutting my hair like i had no the box says like cut this much and like
- 18:28it had a scale of how much I needed.
- 18:31But I have long hair and I was so worried. So give us some tips on that because,
- 18:36like I know the value of that test.
- 18:39I mean, I didn't. It was free, which made it a little easier to toss it in the garbage.
- 18:43But the biggest thing was cutting my hair. And I did not want to do that.
- 18:47It really worried me. So give us some tips to make that less scary.
- 18:51Let's play show and tell. It's one of my favorite games.
- 18:55I also washed my hair yesterday. Yesterday was a hair washing.
- 18:57That's the only reason that we're doing this, but I'm going to show you how
- 19:00we kind of get around that.
- 19:01I probably have a crease from working out earlier, but I mean,
- 19:04my hair is pretty, pretty long.
- 19:05Like, yeah, it's not short, but what you're going to do because I'm in my spinny
- 19:09chair is I like to get somebody else to do it for me.
- 19:12If you're, and we want to make sure when we do a hair tissue mineral analysis
- 19:15that it's at least six weeks after getting our hair colored.
- 19:19Most women get their hair colored if they do color their hair every six weeks.
- 19:23So when you get your hair colored.
- 19:25It's a great idea just to get your hairdresser to do it. She's probably not going to mind.
- 19:28She's probably like, wait, what are you doing? I want to know more. Mine always does.
- 19:32So literally, tell me if you can't hear me.
- 19:34We're going to get in right in here. And I take a couple different strands from
- 19:39right here, right here, right here.
- 19:42I don't know if you heard me, but break it up and in different parts throughout the hair.
- 19:46So it's not like I'm getting like one big like, you know, hunk or anything like that.
- 19:51And normally for a hair tissue mineral analysis, we only want the root because
- 19:55we want to see what comes out in the past like three to four months.
- 19:58I want to say like total, it might be Like maybe, maybe this much hair,
- 20:04depending on how thick your hair is.
- 20:05But if we split that up in a couple different sections, you honestly can't even tell.
- 20:10Like I've done mine maybe four or five times.
- 20:14Okay. You can't tell. Just get it in the middle towards the back.
- 20:18Okay. That makes it so much easier. And for everybody who's just listening,
- 20:21I will have this up on YouTube because interviews, I do video.
- 20:24But if you're listening, she put up her hair in a half pony and then took it
- 20:29from a couple spots right underneath the part for the half pony.
- 20:33That makes it so much more. Like, I wish I would have had that video.
- 20:37I would have done the hair tissue analysis.
- 20:40But I was freaked out. And so I just opted not to do it. So maybe now I'll have to do one.
- 20:46Most women are, especially if you're dealing with hair loss,
- 20:51issues from thyroid issues.
- 20:53So if you are there is other places
- 20:56you can get hair you can you know use body hair or something
- 20:58like that it just normally doesn't show us what we need
- 21:01and you have to take so much it normally doesn't work but if
- 21:04that's our only option then that's our only option so I know it's you know many
- 21:09men are bold so you know what do we do there so interesting I didn't even think
- 21:13about that I'll take it from my hair from my head yeah kind of so hard to do
- 21:19but I have to maybe grow out a patch or something.
- 21:25Like, why do you have a patch of hair on your leg?
- 21:29Why do you have one hairy knee? Well, I'm doing it. It's a great conversation
- 21:33start. It's a great speaker at the beach, I'm sure. Right?
- 21:36Cool day with your kids. They're splashing along.
- 21:40We would do it in the winter. I
- 21:41mean, let's be honest. We'll do it in the winter. That's fair. Good call.
- 21:45Yes. I have learned so much, and I know my listeners have. But for the woman
- 21:49who is listening right now, she's tired. She's overwhelmed.
- 21:52She's not getting answers. Like you said, you know, a decade of diagnoses and
- 21:56everything from the doctor.
- 21:57What is the one thing that you want her to remember from our conversation today?
- 22:02One thing. Let me just give you hope that you can heal holistically.
- 22:08And if you can remember one thing, everything takes a back burner to stress. Your body's not broken.
- 22:14It's trying to tell you something. We just have to figure out what should be
- 22:18in your body that's not and what shouldn't be in your body that is.
- 22:22Yes. Yes, yes. And so if somebody wants to connect with you and work with you,
- 22:27what's the best way for them to do that?
- 22:29You can find me on social media at Bria Sharon Fitness on pretty much all of the platforms.
- 22:33But also I have a free holistic health, wellness and weight loss Facebook group
- 22:38that has about a thousand members in there.
