Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mark Wilkshire: The Co-operative Bank CEO on RBNZ keeps OCR at 2.25 percent
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the ocr has been held steady at two point
- 0:02Speaker 1: twenty five percent RB and z's inflational peak at four
- 0:04Speaker 1: point two percent this quarter. Though, you know, it's like
- 0:08Speaker 1: penning a tail on donkey with estimates. At the moment,
- 0:11Speaker 1: markets thought the announcement was a bit more hawkish than
- 0:13Speaker 1: they expected. Kiwi dollar rallied a quarter of the US
- 0:16Speaker 1: sent to fifty eight point one eight In response. Mark
- 0:18Speaker 1: Wiltshire is the Cooperative Bank CEO, joins us this morning.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Hey Mark, good morning, Rahan.
- 0:23Speaker 1: What did you make at the statement yesterday from the bank?
- 0:27Speaker 2: I think on the reserve banks did a very difficult
- 0:29Speaker 2: job right now. So I think we've had a very
- 0:31Speaker 2: good job just basically having a very balanced view highlighting
- 0:35Speaker 2: some of those risks that they might need to take action.
- 0:38Speaker 2: So the markets, as you said, just did react a
- 0:40Speaker 2: bit saying that's a bit of a tone saying they
- 0:42Speaker 2: will respond to inflation if that bersis into the medium term.
- 0:46Speaker 2: What's happening on you on the whole?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, on the balance, on the whole balanced and on
- 0:50Speaker 1: the whole sensible, which is good. It's what you want
- 0:53Speaker 1: from a reserve bank, right What about your rates? How
- 0:56Speaker 1: they have you increased them by how much and will
- 0:59Speaker 1: you in the future.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, the floating rates on hold, so we've got one
- 1:04Speaker 2: of the lowest floating rates out there at four ninety nine.
- 1:07Speaker 2: It's a fixed rates that are the one that's moving.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And so markets did up a little bit. I mean,
- 1:13Speaker 2: good news on the ceasefire in the Middle East, so
- 1:16Speaker 2: that certainly has helped markets. So that was actually a
- 1:19Speaker 2: positive effect, But it is, as you mentioned, it's quite
- 1:22Speaker 2: volatile right now. So I think the risks around those
- 1:25Speaker 2: fixed rates continue to move up, and the markets are
- 1:29Speaker 2: expecting more moves than the Reserve Bank at the moment,
- 1:32Speaker 2: So that's they're already coming forward from what was work
- 1:37Speaker 2: cast around December have now looking more like September for
- 1:40Speaker 2: those rises start coming through in the OCR here in
- 1:44Speaker 2: New Zealand. So that's that's the risks of those fixed
- 1:47Speaker 2: rates start to edge up more and that's the upper
- 1:50Speaker 2: pressure on those fixed rates.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Mark, what about your customers are they're getting in touch
- 1:54Speaker 1: saying today right now it's a tough time, we need help.
- 1:58Speaker 2: We're not seeing a lot of that in the consumer
- 2:00Speaker 2: retail market, Ryan, the I mean, it is a tough
- 2:02Speaker 2: time right now, but I think basically people are managing
- 2:05Speaker 2: through this. At the moment, we're not really seeing too
- 2:08Speaker 2: many advers and packs. I mean, it is a concern
- 2:11Speaker 2: I think for people this level of volatility, but people
- 2:15Speaker 2: are okay at the moment, and I think the rates
- 2:17Speaker 2: have been low so that's helped. So people have been
- 2:20Speaker 2: had to have some resilience out there. But you're keeping
- 2:23Speaker 2: a close eye on that and keeping in touch with
- 2:25Speaker 2: our customers to make sure they continue to manage themselves well.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Mark, appreciate your time this morning. Thanks for being with me,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Mark Bookshare Coopertive Banks CEO.
