- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're so glad you're here with us. Lucas: Today we're going to talk about something you use every day, and I bet you don't even think about it. Luna: Oh, I love guessing games. Is it about food? Lucas: You're close. We're talking about the tools you use to eat with. Kitchen basics. Luna: Oh, like forks and spoons and knives. Perfect. I always mix those up in Amharic. Lucas: Then this is the episode for you. Let's start with the spoon. In Amharic, spoon is ማንኪያ. Luna: ማንኪያ. Lucas: Great. Try it again, a bit slower. Luna: ማንኪያ. Lucas: Perfect. You can use this to eat soup or maybe some yogurt. Luna: I do love a good bowl of soup. So, how do I say I want a spoon? Like at a restaurant. Lucas: That's a great phrase. To say 'I want a spoon', you say ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ. That's a bit of a mouthful, but I'm trying. Lucas: And you're doing great. Let's break it down. ማንኪያ is spoon, and እፈልጋለሁ means 'I want'. Luna: Right, so ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ is I want a spoon. Lucas: Exactly. Now, say it with me one more time. Luna: ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's move on to the fork. In Amharic, fork is ሹካ. Luna: ሹካ. That sounds a bit like 'shuka'. Is that right? Lucas: Close enough. The 'u' is a bit shorter, but you're on the right track. Luna: ሹካ. Good. Now, how do I ask where the fork is? Like if I'm setting the table and I can't find it. Lucas: That's a useful one. To ask 'where is the fork?', you say That's perfect because I always lose my fork in the drawer. Lucas: You need to organize that drawer, Luna. Luna: I know, I know. But at least now I can ask in Amharic. So, we have spoon and fork. What about the knife? Lucas: Great question. Knife in Amharic is ቢላዋ. Luna: ቢላዋ. That's got a nice sound to it. Lucas: It does. Now, can you guess how to say 'I want a knife'? Luna: Hmm, if I follow the pattern, it would be ቢላዋ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Exactly right. You're a natural. Luna: And I love that I can use the same phrase for different things. What about a plate? Lucas: Plate in Amharic is ሳህን. Luna: ሳህን. Okay, that's a new one. How do I remember that? Lucas: Well, it sounds a bit like 'sahan'. Maybe think of a saucer, which is a small plate. Luna: Oh, that's a good trick. ሳህን, like saucer. Got it. Lucas: And let's practice saying 'I want a plate' as well. Luna: ሳህን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. So now we have four important items: ማንኪያ, ሹካ, ቢላዋ, and ሳህን. Luna: Let's do a quick review. Spoon is ማንኪያ, fork is ሹካ, knife is ቢላዋ, plate is ሳህን. Lucas: You've got it. Now, let's put them in a little scene. Imagine you're at a restaurant and you need a fork. You might ask the waiter, And if I need a spoon, I'd say ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Exactly. And if you need a plate, you'd say ሳህን እፈልጋለሁ. Or even a knife, ቢላዋ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: This is so useful. I feel like I could actually navigate a kitchen in Ethiopia now. Lucas: And that's the goal. To be able to use these words in real situations. We're building on what you know, like asking where things are and saying what you want. Luna: Right, it's all connected. And speaking of connections, I want to mention something. Lucas: Go ahead. Luna: If this podcast has been helping you learn Amharic, and you want to keep it going, you can support us. It's like buying us a coffee, which is fitting since we're talking about kitchen stuff. Lucas: That's a nice tie-in. And it's easy. Just go to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Every little bit helps us keep making these episodes. But no pressure, we're just happy you're here learning with us. Lucas: Absolutely. Now, let's get back to our utensils. We had a great review, so let's try a few more combinations. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Can we practice asking for multiple things? Lucas: Sure. How about 'I need a fork and a spoon'? In Amharic, you can say That's a mouthful, but I like the sound of it. Lucas: You're doing so well. And remember, እና means 'and'. Luna: So I could also say ቢላዋ እና ሳህን እፈልጋለሁ, 'I want a knife and a plate'. Lucas: Exactly. That's a perfect sentence. You're combining everything we've learned today. Luna: It feels great. Could we do one more quick scene? Like, setting the table? Lucas: Let's do it. I'll set the scene. You're preparing dinner and you want to make sure everything is on the table. You might ask, ሹካዎቹ የት ናቸው? That's 'where are the forks?' Oh, that's the plural. Good to know. Lucas: And if you're looking for the spoons, you'd say Perfect. I feel like I'm actually setting a nice table. Lucas: See how much you can do now. You're not just learning words, you're using them in real life. Luna: And it's all thanks to these little episodes. I'm really proud of myself, honestly. Lucas: You should be. Now, let's do one more quick review of the key words before we wrap up. Luna: Sounds good. Let's go. Lucas: Spoon, ማንኪያ. Luna: ማንኪያ. Lucas: Fork, ሹካ. Luna: ሹካ. Lucas: Knife, ቢላዋ. Luna: ቢላዋ. Lucas: Plate, ሳህን. Luna: ሳህን. Lucas: And the phrases: ማንኪያ እፈልጋለሁ, ሹካ የት ነው?, ቢላዋ እፈልጋለሁ, ሳህን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: And I'll use them at my next dinner party. I'll be totally prepared. Lucas: That's the spirit. Practice these until next time, and we'll have more Amharic for you. Luna: Thanks for joining us on Learn Amharic with Fexingo. See you next time.
