- 0:00Welcome to board for the UKON Football Coaches Show, We get together Tuesday's six
- 0:04pm with head coach Jim Moore. I'm Mike Crispino, Ukon's play by play
- 0:08guy for football and basketball and baseball, and coach. Here we are end
- 0:12of September, uk still looking for their first win of the season. My
- 0:17thought is, there's a long way to go in this season. I mean,
- 0:20you got eight games left, there's two months of football remaining, so
- 0:25all is certainly not lost. No, I mean last year we were one
- 0:30and four after five games and went to a bowl game. So we're just
- 0:34trying to figure out a way to play our best game in this week.
- 0:39It's Utah State, and we've put the previous game behind us, learned the
- 0:43lessons we need to learn. And as as as Bill Belichick said, we're
- 0:50onto Utah State. We're done talking about Duke. That one's over and so
- 0:55all eyes are on getting to win this week and into Utah State. So
- 0:58that's that's the attitude in the building. That's the attitude of the players.
- 1:03That's uh, that's the attitude of the coaches, and that's all we're talking
- 1:06about right now. Yeah, earlier today, Jim, and you're presser.
- 1:11You mentioned, you know, referring to the past. Obviously kind of had
- 1:14a tremendous turnaround in your first year here. You know, franchise it had
- 1:18won four games and their previous thirty six. You win six, get to
- 1:22a bowl game. But here you are, you know, on four and
- 1:26trying to get this thing on track for this year. And you mentioned something
- 1:30about referring to the past and deciding how to act in the future. You
- 1:34can use what you've done in the past here with Yukon football to get this
- 1:38thing turned around. I'm surmising after what you said. I said you refer
- 1:42to it, and you do. You have learned lessons from it, but
- 1:48you don't want to constantly talk about the past. Every years a new year,
- 1:51Every year's a new challenge, every new year's a new team, Like
- 1:53this is not last year's team, this is this year's team. So as
- 1:57a coach, you have to learn the lessons, uh, not just from
- 2:01the previous year, but from your experiences in coaching U and you have to
- 2:07reflect on you know, what went right when you had a good year,
- 2:14and what went wrong when you were struggling, and what went right when you
- 2:16turned something around and try to bring those lessons into play. So it's not
- 2:22just the previous year, uh, it's your previous career. So that's what
- 2:27we always try to do, you know. But I think this, you
- 2:30know, some of the members of this team having the experience of you know,
- 2:35turning something around last year, it can it can benefit us. But
- 2:40you know, we have to we have to go out and we just have
- 2:43to We have to execute better as a as a program, and that's our
- 2:46objective every day. But we're not going to spend you know, a whole
- 2:51lot of time thinking about the past, because that doesn't help you for the
- 2:53present in the future, other than the lessons you can learn and apply going
- 2:57forward. Yeah, one thing you all so mentioned, I believe in the
- 3:00postgame press conference, and I learned this from being in the NBA for a
- 3:05lot of years working with the Knicks. Jeff Van Gundy was their coach,
- 3:08and he was saying, one year, coming into camp, you know,
- 3:12getting to five hundred like we did, that's one thing. But then the
- 3:16tough part is getting above that and getting into playoff contention and getting too you
- 3:21know, semifinals and your conference and all that and at the time, I
- 3:24didn't understand what he was saying, but I get it now, all these
- 3:28years later, because it happens sometimes to make that jump like you did last
- 3:32year. That's one thing. Now you got to sustain. You gotta get
- 3:37better. It's not automatic, is it. It's much harder to go from
- 3:40six wins to seven wins it is from one win six wins. I mean
- 3:45that's a fact. So so we're working harder, you know, And nothing
- 3:51has been decided yet this year on our win total. For us, it's
- 3:54all about trying to get win number one and doing everything possible, everything in
- 3:58our power as a staff, as a program, as players to make sure
- 4:01that we're completely focused on what we need to do this week to play our
- 4:05best football and give ourselves an opportunity to go out there and win the game.
- 4:09And so you're drawing everything that you can think of to try to get
- 4:14your mind right and get your players focused and put them in a good position.
- 4:17But we like it when it's hard. You know. This is a
- 4:19great challenge if you're a competitor. You know, I said this a lot.
- 4:24I mean, you love these you don't necessarily want to be in them,
- 4:27but you thrive in situations like this. So yeah, I mean,
- 4:30I think our team has a really good attitude. I thought that they made
- 4:36improvements last week against a really good football team, and now we need to
- 4:40put those improvements into play going forward. Yeah. One thing I've learned over
- 4:45the years, when you tell a player or a competitor, well, you
- 4:48can't do that, that's the most motivating thing for any athlete. And I
- 4:54love that about athletics. That's kind of why I've stayed in it for forty
- 4:58years, because it's all about that challenge and trying to overcome it. You're
- 5:00so right, I mean, you know, adversity turns weak people into victims,
- 5:08and it turns strong people into warriors, you know, And and you
- 5:14very quickly find out which camp everyone is in. They're either victims or warriors
- 5:19because adversity reveals that. And so what has been nice is that, for
- 5:27the most part, the overwharlming majority of our team, I see a warrior
- 5:32mentality emerging and that's encouraging. And where we don't see it, then it
- 5:40tells you something about that person, you know, and you're probably you know,
- 5:46Bill Belichick said at the bed, I'm gonna go back to another Bill
- 5:48Belichick for you here. He said, oh no, actually this wasn't Bill
- 5:51Belichick. Nick Saban said this, but I don't know that he invented a
- 5:56lot of people have said it is high achievers don't like medio people and medioc
- 6:00where people don't like high achievers, and you can't let that dynamic exist on
- 6:04your team, and so times like this we'd out the week and elevate the
- 6:11strong. And so that's what we're looking for. You con'll have UTAs state.
- 6:15We're going to talk a lot about them here in the next a few
- 6:17minutes with coach Jim Moore. But quick note on the Duke game. I
- 6:21thought, on the positive side, this team came in Duke eighteenth in the
- 6:26country running for two hundred and forty two yards a game. Twenty seven times
- 6:30they tried to run it. They got seventy eight yards against yukon the other
- 6:34day. I thought, you know, that's something you can hang your hat
- 6:36on here going forward. If you can slow the rushdown of any team,
- 6:42ultimately you're gonna be able to get their offense under control. I would think,
- 6:46yeah, I think we're making improvement on defense. I think we're improving
- 6:48in all areas. The thing that's hurting us is, you know, we've
- 6:53had a couple of big plays against us that aren't typical for us, so
- 6:58I got to get that under control. But a lot more consistency on defense.
- 7:01I think that's because we've we've kind of found who we are and what
- 7:06we do best, and then we're sticking with it. We're getting repetitions,
- 7:13and we got some guys that really care and they're well coached by Dalton and
- 7:18Serenke and Kenny, and they take that coaching and they apply it and it's
- 7:21fun to work with that group. All Right, we'll with Jim Moore.
- 7:26This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We're gonna go Day in the Life
- 7:29of Jim Morra that's coming up, and we're going to talk about field position
- 7:33coach, So get your notes ready. We're going to continue here. This
- 7:36is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Learfield
