- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks Vicky.
- 0:01Speaker 2: That number if you are keen to get in contact
- 0:03Speaker 2: with us today eight nine four one one four nine.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And I think I've got Tie on the line who
- 0:09Speaker 2: has apparently had one of these diseases that we're talking about.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Tie, Hello Katie, how are you not too bad?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Mate?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Which what have you had?
- 0:19Speaker 3: I got left those porosis about four years ago at
- 0:22Speaker 3: mant and Dan while I was goose hunting. I decided
- 0:26Speaker 3: to walk through the swamps in my shorts and cut
- 0:28Speaker 3: my legs. Yeah, yeah, about an incubation Peter a bit
- 0:33Speaker 3: over a week and yeah, right on that week, I
- 0:36Speaker 3: was driving to work and almost passed out in my
- 0:39Speaker 3: car at Munamar and yeah, turned around and went home
- 0:44Speaker 3: and absolutely debilitating lad in bed with a laid in
- 0:48Speaker 3: bed with A came all back because I couldn't actually
- 0:51Speaker 3: move to drink anything or even get out of bed.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It was thirty minutes to get out of bed to
- 0:55Speaker 3: go to the toilet. In the end, my temperature got
- 0:58Speaker 3: up to forty one degrees, so I got rushed to
- 1:01Speaker 3: roll down in an ambulance and they used about thirty
- 1:05Speaker 3: ice packs on me and talk about eight hours to
- 1:07Speaker 3: get down one degree and then huge antibiotics, and I
- 1:11Speaker 3: was lucky. I had actually a professor from Italy who
- 1:14Speaker 3: was a leading professor in lepto, was visiting the territory,
- 1:18Speaker 3: so he actually came in and saw me, and yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: it was very mate. It would really really sick.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it would have been absolutely frightening. Did you even
- 1:28Speaker 2: realize that humans could get us before you? Before you
- 1:31Speaker 2: got it?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, well a bloke, I bloke, his dog's hunting dogs
- 1:37Speaker 3: got it two weeks before me. And actually I mate
- 1:40Speaker 3: that I went out shooting goose shooting. We'd told me
- 1:42Speaker 3: about it, and he said I should be careful because
- 1:44Speaker 3: this guy and his dog's got lepto. And then yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 3: a week I saw it a bit panicky, but then
- 1:49Speaker 3: I didn't feel bad in a week later. Yeah, that
- 1:51Speaker 3: was that was when, I mean it came over me
- 1:54Speaker 3: like a wave. It was an instant. When I was
- 1:55Speaker 3: driving my car and I said the water pipe in
- 1:58Speaker 3: the meeting strip at Nunama, I just sort of veered
- 2:00Speaker 3: off the road and now he passed out, and I thought,
- 2:02Speaker 3: she's what's going on here? And then I thought, I
- 2:05Speaker 3: think it's going to be left though, And yeah, like
- 2:08Speaker 3: I've never been so sick in your life.
- 2:10Speaker 2: No, And you know what, I reckon such a good
- 2:12Speaker 2: warning for everybody because we like, we all live such
- 2:16Speaker 2: an outdoors lifestyle, particularly if you love to go out
- 2:18Speaker 2: hunting and fishing, and even speaking to doctor Vicki Krauss,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and I was thinking, goodness me, you know, all the
- 2:24Speaker 2: different diseases that we've got to keep an eye out for.
- 2:27Speaker 2: But it's a really good, really good reminder and warning
- 2:31Speaker 2: for people because I know plenty of people go out
- 2:33Speaker 2: hunting on the weekends.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah, just walking through swamps like it was only met
- 2:37Speaker 3: deep and all I did was cut your leg on.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I mean I did have short time, which is a
- 2:42Speaker 3: bit silly, but you know, you just waded to a
- 2:44Speaker 3: swamp and I just cut your leg on a bit
- 2:45Speaker 3: of on a stick and that was all it took.
- 2:47Speaker 3: But the bacteria got in through the skin and that
- 2:50Speaker 3: was Yeah, that was it.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh you cool bugger. So really ty, it sounds like
- 2:55Speaker 2: you can speak from experience, mate, that we all need
- 2:58Speaker 2: to make sure that we do certainly listen to that
- 3:01Speaker 2: warning from from doctor Vicki Krauss.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Look, I mean yeah, like I said, I've had a
- 3:06Speaker 3: lot of flues and illnesses and yeah, that's the worst
- 3:09Speaker 3: thing I've ever had, the problem, the scary thing because
- 3:11Speaker 3: my organs actually starting to shut down. So yeah, a
- 3:16Speaker 3: lot of people die in Italy every year they swimm
- 3:18Speaker 3: out to an island. Yeah, of Sicily that's mud and
- 3:21Speaker 3: I think they get about a dozen people a year
- 3:23Speaker 3: died from it.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Oh goodness me, mate, I'm assuming you've been out hunting
- 3:27Speaker 2: since No, haven't you. Oh my goodness, so haven't Oh,
- 3:34Speaker 2: scavenging swamps.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I don't think I've never walked through water again. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 3: unless i'm you know, a bit taken the windown of you.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet it did. Oh mate, I'm glad you're all.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I'm glad you've recovered. But I really appreciate your calling
- 3:47Speaker 2: and letting us know because I reckon sometimes with this
- 3:49Speaker 2: kind of thing. We you know, we hear about it
- 3:51Speaker 2: and you go, oh, yeah, that's not going to happen
- 3:53Speaker 2: to me. So it is actually good to speak to
- 3:55Speaker 2: somebody who's had that past experience, so that we realize
- 3:58Speaker 2: that it is something that we've got to take seriously.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Dan, it was so easy, and it was like, man, damn,
- 4:03Speaker 3: it's pretty popular, like all the way swamps are pretty popular.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Wasn't.
- 4:06Speaker 3: It didn't take much to get it so oh Ty.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Thank you very much for having a chat with me
- 4:11Speaker 2: this morning. I appreciate it.
- 4:13Speaker 3: No worries at all, Thank you, Katie.
