Latest / Worldview Matters With David Fiorazo / Daniel Smithwick: Can Decline Of Biblical Worldview Be Slowed?
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity.
- 0:13No topic off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 0:19Hey, friends, family and Christ, thank you so much for tuning in.
- 0:22We're talking about World View in this podcast with Nehemiah Institute's Daniel Smith-Wick
- 0:29and he's the author of Pillars and other books, and I just want to quote him before we bring
- 0:34him on, the future of our nation hangs in the balance, the Christian world view that
- 0:39shaped the birth of our nation and guided her for many decades as now being replaced
- 0:46with radical anti-Christian world views.
- 0:49Unless a new generation rises up and reclaims the Christian heritage of our land, the next
- 0:55several generations, your children and grandchildren, are likely to suffer severe consequences from
- 1:03the sins of their fathers on a national level.
- 1:07That's from the book Pillars, and the website I'm going to give you right now, nehemiahinstitute.com,
- 1:13and the other website is worldviewcheckup.org.
- 1:19And I want to bring in Daniel Smith-Wick and he's an author of these books also.
- 1:23He founded the Nehemiah Institute in 1986.
- 1:27It's a private foundation dedicated to the development of the biblical world view assessment
- 1:32and curriculum materials for use in Christian schools and churches, and it's so necessary
- 1:39today.
- 1:40That's why we're having him on.
- 1:41Dan, good to see you, brother.
- 1:43Good morning, Kusar, and thank you for having me on, David, I very much appreciate the
- 1:47session.
- 1:48I should say good afternoon.
- 1:49I'm sorry.
- 1:50Thanks for your time today, and we've got your on your website, people can go to worldviewcheckup.org.
- 1:57And there is a store there where friends you can look up some of the books, including
- 2:01Pillars, which is the first one there.
- 2:04We're going to be talking a lot about Pillars, because that's the one I have in my hand here.
- 2:08There's a lot of quotes in there.
- 2:10We'll see what we can get to today.
- 2:12Also, some fascinating books and quotes from men of God through the centuries.
- 2:17But Daniel, let's just start with going back to the 1980s.
- 2:22You were ahead of the curve, I think, because the biblical world view was declining.
- 2:28We might want to go back to the sexual revolution of the 60s and maybe the 70s, but you got this
- 2:33going and just tell a little bit about what the progression of the Nehemiah Institute
- 2:38please.
- 2:39Thank you very much.
- 2:40My start on this was in watching and reading Shaefer, Francis Shaefer.
- 2:46He's really the first person that started talking in the terms of worldview.
- 2:51And in his earlier books about that, he used the word separately, world and view.
- 2:56And then later, it became worldview, which has come, it's a derivative of a German word.
- 3:01But basically, worldview means our basic outlook on life.
- 3:04How do we think life's supposed to work?
- 3:06And I was doing some work with Pat Robertson and somewhere along the line, I just was concerned
- 3:12about, how do we know if our ideas are really the right ideas, are the things that we're
- 3:17trying to do to help churches be better at being insulting life, are our ideas vividly
- 3:25based or not?
- 3:26And that led to my development of what today is called the Peer's Test, which is what
- 3:31we're talking about here mostly.
- 3:33It's a worldview assessment that's used mostly in Christian schools, but also in churches
- 3:37homeschooling.
- 3:39And it tells an alarming story, and that's what the following slides of the show is we
- 3:43go through this.
- 3:44So it's a threefold purpose of the pillar's course, and I'm reading right from the introduction
- 3:51of the book to impart the essential elements of a truly biblical worldview.
- 3:56Number two, to equip believers, to be effective, salt and light in a world that is presently
- 4:02in darkness.
- 4:03Man, do we need that?
- 4:04And number three, to prepare believers to rise up as a leader and a person of influence
- 4:10in their sphere of influence.
- 4:12Now let's go down to Peers and just share, let's start right there and I'll let you get
- 4:15into some of the slides you wanted to share, Daniel, P-E-E-R-S, politics, economics, education,
- 4:23religion, and social issues.
- 4:26So just, you know, briefly if you want to comment on them one at a time, go ahead.
- 4:29Okay, let's bring up the first slide then and we'll walk through what Peers is all about.
- 4:35This is what we're known for around the country and actually in a few other countries is
- 4:38the Peers test.
- 4:39It's the worldview assessment that is designed for high school and higher-add-ten adults
- 4:46to help us see what is our basic worldview.
- 4:49Is it really Christian or not?
- 4:51And we'll describe this.
- 4:52So the Peers test, I say that I have been observing the shift in America with this Peers
- 4:57instrument because we see the data and we see the results going the wrong direction with
- 5:02this.
- 5:03We define worldview as an assessment program Peers designed to assess how one views God
- 5:09man in the world.
- 5:10That's the fundamental thing that we need to be sure that we're on track with.
- 5:13So here is the Peers acronym, as you were just saying, Peers, politics, economics, education,
- 5:19religion, and social issues.
- 5:21And the thing to be really cognizant of here is every people group on planet Earth
- 5:27has to do these five somehow.
- 5:31And if those fears are not being operated with biblical principles, it will be by some
- 5:36other principles that are not God-honoring.
- 5:39And so the Peers test designed to show are we thinking vividly in these five major
- 5:44spheres of life?
- 5:45Here's some sample questions.
- 5:49Government should rest as directly as possible on the will of the people.
- 5:53We say no.
- 5:55So in a democratic society, children have a right to an education and this right must
- 6:00be protected and enforced by governments.
- 6:02And again, we say no.
- 6:06Civil governments at both the state and national levels should not have responsibility for
- 6:11economic well-being of citizens.
- 6:14And we say agree.
- 6:16That is true.
- 6:17They have no responsibility.
- 6:19So the Peers test has 70 of these kinds of statements, 14 in each of the five Peers
- 6:25spheres.
- 6:26For you, Mark, agree to disagree on a lycra scale, you know, a strong degree or a strong
- 6:31degree.
- 6:32And then we now have with this new website, we have our position papers digitally linked
- 6:38to the person's scorecard.
- 6:40So if we say they're on the wrong side of the question, they can tap on it and get a
- 6:44position paper, which is a 6 to 8 page paper, that's like the Bible study on that topic.
- 6:51Those are really, really significant.
- 6:54So that's the essence of Peers, the questions and position papers, and then the pillars course.
- 7:00And I see the pillars course I'm reading just from the early pages of the book, a look
- 7:06at currently dominant worldviews.
- 7:08And this is what we have to contend with.
- 7:11We've got secular humanism, Marxism, Leninism, cosmic humanism, new ageism.
- 7:19And then there's biblical theism and biblical Christianity.
- 7:22Talk to us a little bit about cosmic humanism.
- 7:24I haven't heard it put that way before.
- 7:26Yeah, that's just the idea that there's just a force, you know, in the sky that is our
- 7:32God and this force, you know, will guide us if we just give ourselves to this force.
- 7:37It's very demanding, very dangerous.
- 7:39But let's get into that with the next slide, and I can show you where we got some results
- 7:44from that.
- 7:45First, we like to say this, what the Peer's Test is not and you can read down there.
- 7:49You know, it's not a Bible knowledge test.
- 7:52We have lots of those quizzes on the Internet, a Bible knowledge test.
- 7:56The Peer's Test is a gauge of how we think the world should work in these five Peer's
- 8:01categories.
- 8:04So in developing the Peer's Test, we had to go through some exercises to show that the
- 8:09test was really valid.
- 8:10It was really measuring what we claim to measure.
- 8:13So we gathered up a group of about 35 scholarly individuals.
- 8:18These are heads of Christian ministries, authors of good Christian books, names that you
- 8:24would be familiar with in most cases, and we gave them the Peer's Test.
- 8:29Now we knew who they were and we knew where their worldview was at.
- 8:33We wanted to see if the Peer's Test would show that.
- 8:36And so you're looking at the composite results of these 35 scholarly Christian leaders.
- 8:43None of them scored below 70, which is our benchmark for atheism.
- 8:47Serval of them scored 100.
- 8:48Well, that's what we expected that we replaced that the Peer's Test would reflect that.
- 8:54So then with those results under our belt, we had to find other groups that we knew
- 8:59would be on the opposite side of worldview and see if the Peer's Test would reflect that.
- 9:06The way we obtained those results was by running ads in the Humanist magazine and the
- 9:12New Age magazine.
- 9:14The New Age stuff is where the cosmic humanism is believed to be a forest we can trust.
- 9:20So I made the assumption that subscribers to those two magazines are not on our wavelength.
- 9:28They're not in our worldview camp.
- 9:30So we ran ads for three months in those two magazines.
- 9:35I think we called it a free philosophy of life assessment, something like that.
- 9:39And then after three months, we run a report to shoulder composite results.
- 9:44So here's the results of Humanist, the New Age, all below zero.
- 9:49Wow, especially in the religion category, of course.
- 9:53So this is a worldview posture of people who call themselves humanists.
- 9:58They don't believe there's a God, New Ageers or a cosmic God.
- 10:02So there's the top one.
- 10:04The blue is the worldview scholars and then below that in the green are the New Ageers.
- 10:10Now that chart tells everything.
- 10:12This is this is two major different worldviews that are buying for the culture.
- 10:19And the red line is the summary results of Christian family students.
- 10:25From 1988 to the end of last year, not a straight line down, ups and downs.
- 10:31But over 30 some years, the purest test is showing that we are losing our youth.
- 10:37They're moving away from a Judeo Christian worldview in favor of a secular humanist,
- 10:42if not a socialist worldview.
- 10:44I say this is our greatest crisis in America that we're losing an entire
- 10:48generation.
- 10:49Over 90% of our kids are on that red line.
- 10:52Our kids and most of them are in public schools or in traditional prison schools that are weak.
- 10:58So this is a serious, serious matter that the peers test is showing us.
- 11:03Comments on that, Dave?
- 11:04Yes, well, it's a startling figure on the trend chart.
- 11:0990% of Christian youth are in this category of this decline.
- 11:16They're basically believing syncretism or secularism, and you say it's the greatest problem
- 11:21for the church today.
- 11:24This is why it's so important to understand why the enemy goes after children.
- 11:29The enemy for 50 plus years has gone after the kids in the public schools.
- 11:35So would you care to comment on that, and then we'll have to, yeah, that's exactly right.
- 11:39Go ahead.
- 11:40Let me know as well that if you can capture the kids, you will have the nation in 30, 40 years.
- 11:47That's what's planned out in America.
- 11:49The Marxist with John Dewey's help, father of the public school system, have teamed up,
- 11:55and decided to set out and capture America, take it down by replacing our Judeo Christian
- 12:02heritage in our schools with this Marxification of ideas.
- 12:07And so the peers test is shown that, and we really need to pay attention to that, because
- 12:12this is hard for data that says our kids are believing humanist new age ideas more
- 12:17so than Judeo Christian.
- 12:19Now, I know that maybe youth pastors don't like to hear this, but when I test youth groups,
- 12:24this is exactly the data we get.
- 12:26And when I show the youth group, the leaders, the questions that the kids are missing,
- 12:30they say, oh my gosh, how can my kids believe that?
- 12:33But they are.
- 12:35Yeah, and you're not talking about just young people.
- 12:37You're talking about youth groups and churches.
- 12:40In churches, right?
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:42Yeah, and we know from Barnard Research and others that even the biblical worldview of pastors
- 12:47and especially youth pastors, only 13% of youth pastors, in churches have a biblical worldview.
- 12:55So we have a lot of problems going on, a lot of issues.
- 12:57Think a lot of it points to the need for parents to bring up their kids in the way of Lord,
- 13:04the biblical worldview, and instead of the allowing government schools, Hollywood, media,
- 13:10corporates, corporations, I love this quote, and we have to take a brief pause here, Daniel,
- 13:16and then we'll pick up one of those slides when we come back by Abraham Kuiper, who is
- 13:22the prime minister in the Netherlands, and he said, when principles that run against
- 13:27your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling and peace is
- 13:35your sin.
- 13:36Now, there's a good wake up call for some Christians that just say, well, I don't want to get involved.
- 13:43Battle is your calling that too many people want to have a comfortable, I call it maybe
- 13:47cruise ship Christianity instead of battleship being ready because we're supposed to fight,
- 13:52but I think we're not fighting for the children, we're not protecting the children.
- 13:56So too many of them are being won over by the other side, and the devil is making disciples,
- 14:01the devil is.
- 14:02But we're supposed to make disciples of Christ.
- 14:03I know I'm preaching to the choir, Daniel Smithwick, Nehemiah Ministries, there's a card
- 14:08you sent me time to rebuild the wall again, and it's on the worldview on Nehemiah Institute
- 14:13since 1986.
- 14:14We'll be right back on World View Matters.
- 14:17Today's show is brought to you by Harbinger's Daily.
- 14:20World News Biblically Understood.
- 14:23Stay informed at Harbinger's Daily.com.
- 14:51Back with Daniel Smithwick, I want to give you the website again, NehemiahInstitute.com.
- 14:57The other one is WorldViewCheckup.org, and we're talking about the book Pillars of Study
- 15:05and Foundations of Civilizations.
- 15:07We're also talking about the Peer's Test, so Daniel, just pick it up where we left off.
- 15:13This is a summary of 30-some years of Peer's Testing on the left side of pastors, the biblical
- 15:20scholars that we had in the validity study, average for above 90.
- 15:25Next are pastors, just barely over the biblical fears and category, we'd like to see that
- 15:30higher, but at least it's there.
- 15:32Next to our troubling, faculty in Christian schools, faculty in Christian schools in the
- 15:37middle of the moderate Christian, same as general adults.
- 15:40A lot of adults take our tests, they find us by different beings or the kids who have
- 15:45taken the Peer's Test and they say maybe I should too.
- 15:48So they're there, the problem is the next two, college age kids in Christian colleges
- 15:56and then Christian high schools, below the red line into the secular humanism category.
- 16:02So if you just compare where our leaders are at on the left two columns, compared to
- 16:07the right two columns, what it means is our youth are not accepting what our leaders
- 16:13are holding to and trying to bring about in our culture.
- 16:19This is a critical, critical issue when we're losing our kids at this kind of rate, this
- 16:26is test over 125,000 students, over 30 years, over 1,000 schools, it's just telling that
- 16:33something has to change.
- 16:35We cannot continue to allow our kids to leave home and even leave Christian college with
- 16:40those kinds of world views.
- 16:41They're not going to perpetuate the Christian faith, it's really, really serious.
- 16:47So we've seen a little growth, a little uptick in homeschooling and that's not just to
- 16:53say that Christian families are taking their responsibility seriously to educate their
- 16:57own kids.
- 16:58That's to say that even the world is having an issue.
- 17:01I think that started with COVID with some of the chaos of the public schools and online
- 17:06learning and learning and air quotes, online education, but so a lot of people are going
- 17:12to homeschooling and do you see that as being a little too little too late for people actually
- 17:18educating their own children or obviously is there still time, especially for Christian
- 17:23families?
- 17:24You know, it is late, but it's not too late.
- 17:29There are Christian schools that do well, that score in the upper part of that chart.
- 17:33They can be done, but there has to be a focus on the world view understanding.
- 17:40The parental training is critical, the teacher training is critical, and curriculum follows
- 17:46after that.
- 17:47The most important thing are the teachers.
- 17:49You know, I say the most important question probably today is who's teaching our teachers.
- 17:55How are they being, how is their world view being shaped and because we're submitting our
- 17:59children to these people and they're going to come out of that classroom, that school,
- 18:05with a world view that looks like the teachers.
- 18:08So it's not too late, God is still merciful and so we can do it.
- 18:15Daniel, can we talk about that for a minute because I rarely ever hear that question asked.
- 18:20We know who's teaching the children sadly for the most part in our culture in the United
- 18:26States.
- 18:27Who's teaching the teachers?
- 18:29They go through K through 12 and they've already lost the biblical world view and then
- 18:35they go into the university system, which is completely not just, it's a hostile to
- 18:40the biblical world view and Christian and so these are the, if they go for education to
- 18:46be a teacher, they have a world view that's informing or influencing how they teach.
- 18:52Go ahead and speak to that for a moment before we go back to your next question.
- 18:55The first person that brought that about was John Dewey, John Dewey who was raised in
- 19:00the Christian home, became an atheist in his early 20s.
- 19:05He set out to save America because he thought it was an absolute travesty that we were sending
- 19:11little boys and girls to school to pray to somebody that wasn't there and to read a book
- 19:16that was just met.
- 19:17So John Dewey's work to decrysternize America was done by his enormous work of creating
- 19:25the teacher college system.
- 19:27We used to have colleges in America called teacher colleges and if you wanted to teach,
- 19:32you would go there and get your degree in education and it was thoroughly humanistic
- 19:36if not socialist.
- 19:38And so we were basically asleep at the switch and just thought that, you know, our kids
- 19:44are learning their three hours okay and everything's fine and gradually the kids started
- 19:50rebelling.
- 19:51They were going against, you know, our value systems because that's what they were taught.
- 19:57And higher ed took it even further, our most of our higher ed schools today in America
- 20:02are Marxist professors.
- 20:05So we really have not paid attention to who's teaching the teachers to understand who's
- 20:10teaching our kids, big, big problem.
- 20:13So I just want to mention, I've got one of the brochures you sent me for the Premier
- 20:17World Center, Nea My Institute.
- 20:18And if you look over at the advisory council, we've got at least three people that have
- 20:23been guests on World View Matters, Pastor Paul Blair, Alex Newman, Sam Sorbo.
- 20:29So a lot of familiar troublemakers for the Kingdom of God.
- 20:33There is, you sent me another brochure real quick, Daniel, and then I know you've got
- 20:38a couple more slides to look at.
- 20:40The Kingdom Seminar, what is this for pastors and community leaders before we go on, tell
- 20:46us a little bit about that.
- 20:47Yeah, I had developed a half day Seminar for churches or I go out to churches and do
- 20:51three presentations covering the World View Crisis first Seminar deals with, with world
- 20:59history from a biblical perspective.
- 21:01Second is America's history.
- 21:03And then third Seminar is on the pure story and what the pure thing is telling us.
- 21:08I don't charge for this Seminar.
- 21:10I just ask that they provide transportation and a bin.
- 21:15And every time I've done this and I've done about 20 churches in our country, it's always
- 21:20a wake up call.
- 21:21So I would be very happy to take a call from anybody that is watching on how we can do
- 21:26that Kingdom Seminar.
- 21:28It is really, really an eye opener for churches.
- 21:31Okay.
- 21:32Dan, I see on the bottom of your website, there's an 800 number and there's an email info
- 21:37at worldviewcheckup.org or those two of the best ways to get a hold of you.
- 21:41Yes, the 800 number, which I show in the next couple of slides here.
- 21:45Okay, go ahead.
- 21:46Right here.
- 21:47So worldviewcheckup.org, that's the best URL to use.
- 21:52The cost for an individual of 1776, nice number, right?
- 21:57And then it's automatically discounted down to 88 depending on the size of the group.
- 22:03So this is where you go because every one of us with the fight in America, we need
- 22:08to make sure, is my thinking really biblical or have I had some blind spots about this?
- 22:13This will tell you to get instant results and it's strictly confidential.
- 22:17Nobody sees your scorecard, but you got it.
- 22:20And then our 800 number there, I'm happy to take a call and walk people through what this
- 22:25how it works, what it means, how to get it into your churches.
- 22:30This is really the tool that can help write in the ship in America.
- 22:34I really truly believe that our 30 years of doing this is now a tool that the church
- 22:41in America needs because we have to know this.
- 22:44We have to know where our thoughts have been taken captive to the, you know, instead
- 22:48of to the obedience of Christ, I encourage our audience to really do this.
- 22:55So I want to share a couple of quotes from pillars, the book that I'm reading from Noah
- 23:01Webster.
- 23:02We haven't heard this in a while, but he simply said, education is useless without the Bible.
- 23:08J. Gresham Machen said, when the classroom creates the view that the child is of the highest
- 23:13importance in the education process, it is promoting humanism.
- 23:17I didn't think there's one more by George Mueller that I wanted to share if I could pull
- 23:21that up.
- 23:22But Daniel, while I'm looking for that quote, go ahead.
- 23:24Oh, here we go.
- 23:25And then I'll let you finish.
- 23:26We've got three minutes, three minutes left for you to wrap us up.
- 23:29George Mueller said, the vigor of our spiritual life will be an exact proportion to the place
- 23:36held by the Bible in our life and thoughts.
- 23:40Go ahead and wrap us up on that.
- 23:42That's just telling, isn't it?
- 23:44So back to the peers acronym, P-E-R-S.
- 23:47I have been telling audiences that it seems like the evangelical world is stuck in the
- 23:53R-Canadory.
- 23:54You know, we're all concerned about religion.
- 23:57We want to have right religious doctrine, but we're paying little if any attention to
- 24:03those other major spheres of life, politics, meeting civil government, economics.
- 24:07I mean, how many sermons do we hear on that?
- 24:10And yet those two spheres alone shape an enormous amount of our life.
- 24:16And if we're not thinking biblically there, we will adopt policies that God has to crush.
- 24:21And that's really what's happening.
- 24:23So I want to say the past is, why wouldn't you want to do a worldview checkup on your church?
- 24:31You won't see individual scores, but you will get summary reports that shows what are
- 24:35the top 10 misquestions that your church had.
- 24:38Now, that's wonderful sermon material.
- 24:41And start taking those questions one at a time using the scriptures and teaching a biblical
- 24:46position on those top 10 misquestions, because, you know, this is a pastor's job, right?
- 24:52The Bible says you equip the saints.
- 24:54Well, here's a way to find out where your saints need to be equipped with biblical teaching.
- 25:00So.
- 25:01And we know from all the worldview surveys and just the surveys on morality and moral
- 25:06relativism in America and culture that we are declining and the church is kind of needing
- 25:13that sadly.
- 25:14We're being influenced by the world more than influencing the culture of salt and light.
- 25:19One more thing.
- 25:20And here we are, you know, days after a huge election and millions of Christians didn't
- 25:25even vote.
- 25:26So it happens every election in terms of tens of millions actually, which is just a misunderstanding
- 25:34of our role and purpose as believers, true believers in Christ in this culture when it comes
- 25:40to civil government, politics, I'm sure Daniel, you've heard that you, you can't legislate
- 25:46morality, which is a big lie.
- 25:48But I want to give the website again, worldviewcheckup.org, niamayainstitute.com.
- 25:55Brother, thank you for, I mean, you've been at this since the 80s.
- 25:58So I really hope and pray more people get a whole of you and get this teaching into the
- 26:05churches and get these checkups.
- 26:07But your final words in about 30 seconds, go ahead.
- 26:11I like to say to parents, you know, how about mom, dad, and your high school kids do this
- 26:15individually and then compare your results in your own family.
- 26:20See what your, how your kids thinking is different than you're thinking.
- 26:24I mean, that's, that's a good place to start, right?
- 26:26It sounds like you're having the, yeah, you're showing your, you're welcome.
- 26:30Daniel Smithwick, we appreciate you and, and just all the, all the work.
- 26:34And we pray that God would enlarge your territory and give you good success because this is so
- 26:40needed.
- 26:41If we have any hope of God preserving and us helping, you know, save the United States
- 26:46and God bless brother, thank you so much again for all you're doing.
- 26:50And God bless your work, too, and thank you very much.
- 26:53Thank you.
- 26:54All right, guys, this is, I mean, worldviewcheckup, what's what's our show called worldview matters?
- 27:00Truth matters.
- 27:01Jesus is Lord.
- 27:02Worldview matters.
- 27:03God bless you.
- 27:04God bless you.
- 27:05And as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
