Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Elliott Smith: On 'disappointing' weekend cricket, and where Liam Lawson's contract stands
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Elliott Smith, how are you. I'm good, Andrew So two
- 0:02Speaker 1: men with a lot of challenges in front of them.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The first I'm going to talk about Tom Blundell because
- 0:06Speaker 1: of course, if you remember last week, everyone's going, you know,
- 0:09Speaker 1: he's catching the ball, but he ain't hitting the ball,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and he turns around and he's the only one who
- 0:14Speaker 1: got a century.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Well, he is the only one that got the century.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I mean, how much do you take out of it
- 0:17Speaker 2: though it was a game that was already lost. I
- 0:19Speaker 2: suppose you've got to get the runs at some point,
- 0:21Speaker 2: but there wasn't a lot of pressure. Necessarily, the chasing
- 0:25Speaker 2: were chasing five hundred and sixty seven to win the
- 0:28Speaker 2: match and the game was gone, so there wasn't really
- 0:31Speaker 2: a lot of pressure. I mean, perhaps internally felt a
- 0:33Speaker 2: bit of pressure to retain this place in the team.
- 0:36Speaker 2: But you know, I suppose you've got to get the
- 0:37Speaker 2: runs when they're on off it and you had suedesced
- 0:40Speaker 2: that would save his spot for the Third Test against England.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I know what about Devin Conway though, I mean, well,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I think, please, it's been a bad year.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I feel sorry for him a little bit because he
- 0:49Speaker 2: just looks out of him. He just you know, he
- 0:51Speaker 2: was so magnificent when he came in. He got runs
- 0:53Speaker 2: for fun. At a certain point, he got two hundred
- 0:55Speaker 2: against England over in England, and he was developing one
- 1:00Speaker 2: of the best openers in the world at a certain
- 1:02Speaker 2: point in time. But now I just can't buy a run.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Looks completely shot of confidence. And this player that you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: we were so excited to have a couple of years ago.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I think it would be cruel to put them in
- 1:13Speaker 2: the team for Hamich and I think they should make
- 1:15Speaker 2: a change, put Will Young or someone else in the
- 1:17Speaker 2: top because really, you know, and there's so little test
- 1:20Speaker 2: cricket next year for the Black camps. He's got four scheduled,
- 1:22Speaker 2: it'll probably end up being seven in the end. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: I think it is time to look at other options.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You know this, you can't paper over cracks with one
- 1:32Speaker 2: hundred from Blunder papers over that crack and allows them
- 1:34Speaker 2: to continue combat at the top. I think there's time
- 1:37Speaker 2: for some serious change at the top of the black
- 1:38Speaker 2: Caps order.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I was so looking forward to the series.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I'm so that three nil whitewash in India, which did
- 1:46Speaker 2: really come out of nowhere because the black Cap said,
- 1:48Speaker 2: to be honest, been on a downwards travictory for a
- 1:50Speaker 2: couple of years. That that peak, massive peak out of nowhere.
- 1:53Speaker 2: To go on an Indie your win three nil, but
- 1:55Speaker 2: then to come back to New Zealand your own conditions
- 1:57Speaker 2: and just be completely outplayed by England comprehensively, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: the test inside over inside three days. Real disappointments.
- 2:04Speaker 1: He bad for cricket tragics as well because he watched
- 2:05Speaker 1: the New Zealand Test and then immediately after this the
- 2:08Speaker 1: day night at Adelaide, and then I watched that last
- 2:11Speaker 1: night and watched India fail. So maybe we went so good.
- 2:14Speaker 1: India is just really bad at the moment.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But they just went out and beat Australia that the
- 2:18Speaker 2: previous week as well, and we're won up in the
- 2:20Speaker 2: series and smoked them. So I know.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Another fellow fighting for his position is Liam Lawson. Did
- 2:24Speaker 1: he do enough at other duty?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Well, I didn't finish, so I don't think it's a
- 2:27Speaker 2: good start. Necessarily had some ped issues early on, engine
- 2:31Speaker 2: put it out on the final lap of the race
- 2:33Speaker 2: as well, was probably going to finish about sixteenth in
- 2:35Speaker 2: the end. This is going to be fascinating decision. It's
- 2:37Speaker 2: going to come to a head in the coming days,
- 2:38Speaker 2: in the next forty eight seventy two hours, we're going
- 2:41Speaker 2: to know where Lean Lawson sits because that's the end
- 2:43Speaker 2: of his current deal contract with his team, and there's
- 2:46Speaker 2: all sorts of machinations around where he fits in next year.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Hasn't set the world on fire necessarily, but they've often
- 2:53Speaker 2: viewed him as a long term project at that team,
- 2:55Speaker 2: haven't they.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Well, they've been with him for a very long time,
- 2:59Speaker 1: yet a lot of money. They want someone to support
- 3:03Speaker 1: Max Forstappen. They need someone who can actually, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 1: walk the walk, and he can walk it. I mean
- 3:09Speaker 1: he drives with his elbows out. He doesn't take a
- 3:11Speaker 1: backward step. Ferlando Alonso right at the very beginning, gave
- 3:14Speaker 1: him a bit of addressing down. He dressed him right back.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You know. It's right.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So he's got the attitude, and he's got the ability,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and he is young, and they've spent the money, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think perhaps believing that that Colo Pinto might come
- 3:25Speaker 1: in has been has been or somebody else has been premature.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I think I think he's got it.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it depends how much they stock they put
- 3:32Speaker 2: in those that pack of sex races that he's done
- 3:34Speaker 2: now or whether it's that long term project. Now, we've
- 3:36Speaker 2: seen enough from you over the last four or five
- 3:38Speaker 2: years in our system to go now, you're our guy
- 3:41Speaker 2: for twenty twenty five, not on the basis of what
- 3:43Speaker 2: he's done, you know, this morning in Abu Dhabi, last week,
- 3:45Speaker 2: et cetera, et cetera. I think that long term project
- 3:48Speaker 2: probably hands him in better steed than some of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: other competing drivers.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Look for this stuff, Elliott. Lovely to see you early
- 3:52Speaker 1: in the morning of Mary Christs to you as well.
