- 1:03party, would fighting hokey Bruce.
- 1:05Thank you, Wegmans for carrying it is your pump buddy.
- 1:09Clink, he's playing Keys. Cheers, yes sir.
- 1:15Hopefully, this fall and Lane Stadium after the announcement
- 1:19that all. Everything is going to be
- 1:21lifted. Come June, 15th, they're selling
- 1:24those bad boys after the announcement last week about
- 1:27beers going to be sold that stick it in anything, but I'd
- 1:33love to see those two and only those two that support the
- 1:36school. They'll about you beer in lame,
- 1:38man, beer in lame, that's a brand new way of life.
- 1:44Life and I can't wait to experience it man.
- 1:49Well I just hope it's not one of those things me and you roll up
- 1:52there on a Saturday and we tell our wives like, oh yeah, we're

- 2:01midnight, 1:00 about 8:00. It's, we look at each other
- 2:05Ryan. We're not making it back to the
- 2:08RV, a tonight. It ain't happening.
- 2:11It ain't happening. We will have to find somewhere.
- 2:14That's um we just do / / Roanoke with Jason long.
- 2:18The chief musical officer here at the boundary Court podcast.
- 2:21Really I did we sleep in your basement?
- 2:23Tell Liz, we're stopping by. Yeah, tell it.
- 2:26We're stopping by. I don't know how that'll roll
- 2:29man but you've been good this week.
- 2:31I've been good man. It's been a it's been a good
- 2:33week. We had a Good draft cold, sir,
- 2:39Colts did pretty. Well, didn't go.
- 2:41Where I thought we were going in the early rounds, but I think
- 2:45overall, I like the draft. What about you?
- 2:49How about, how about your Niners?
- 2:50I know you dodged a bullet, there bud.
- 2:52All right. That first Pig we were on the
- 2:55phone with it. And when Trail and his name came
- 2:58up, it was like, that's the pick where we are.
- 3:02Situationally. That is the pic you make.
- 3:05You know, unbelievable, Talent, Big Arm athleticism playing in a
- 3:10pro style under Center. Big play action, Run game down
- 3:13at North Dakota State and I was extremely happy, you know, and
- 3:23for everybody said mag Jones back.
- 3:24Do first of all Niners, don't leak.
- 3:27The guy's mind, things up at the press conferences.
- 3:32And I think I told you about my theory was His pro day was on
- 3:36the 12th. Two weeks later, we make the
- 3:38trade two days later, he goes to work with John Beck, dip, it
- 3:41just made sense. It's like I think we like Justin
- 3:45Fields, not think they like Matt Jones to in a way.
- 3:49They evaluated all three, but Trey was that guy, you know?
- 3:53And then for us, you know, we pick up Banks out of Notre Dame,
- 3:58the big guard sermon out of Ohio State.
- 4:01Interesting, Pig up hours owner. First time we've ever taken
- 4:06positions that are under this regime, and then the river
- 4:09Thomas from Michigan, actually. Mocked him like us where 15
- 4:13times at 10 to the ones safety. And then last pic was the, the
- 4:25running back at a lot Tech thing as latte.
- 4:30Lafayette Mitchell, who's like a 4-3-3 cat, you know, a couple of
- 4:36things I didn't like we didn't hit, but I think it's one of
- 4:38those where We didn't need it but it is what it is.
- 4:44What's your, what's your other few favorite pics?
- 4:46Besides that first. Rounder and so we got quitting
- 4:50pay in the first round. Defensive end went right back
- 4:54again to defensive end with day while being bow.
- 4:58I feel like that's actually probably the higher I guess
- 5:04probably higher floor player. I don't know if he's going to
- 5:08necessarily pop like like quit. He has the potential to do but
- 5:12he's definitely a guy that you can put in there and be a
- 5:15productive. Rotational guy potential
- 5:17starter. I like the pickup of Kyle and
- 5:20Grandson at a SMU, the tight end, Sean Davis nother solid
- 5:26pick their its safety scratch my head a little bit with with Sam
- 5:30ehlinger, but I think Kind of a versatile type player that can
- 5:37throw the football. You know, could give us some
- 5:41other things to do at the quarterback position there.
- 5:43So that's interesting. We had Mike stretching at
- 5:47Charleston wide receiver and then we finally went offensive
- 5:51line late in the draft got will freeze at Penn State guard.
- 5:55So overall a good draft. Like I said, I think just not
- 5:59going either tackle or some offensive line position earlier
- 6:02shocked. Me and probably I think shocked
- 6:05a lot of Colts fans, but doubling down on edge, is not a
- 6:08bad choice because we need to get after the quarterback.
- 6:11No, not at all. Bubbling down on edge, is never
- 6:13a bad choice, because get after the quarterback is such a key.
- 6:17Now Brian, the Hokies have for draft picks.
- 6:20Obviously, the first one kind of broke your heart a little bit.
- 6:24Caleb Farley going to the Titans in division.
- 6:28Yeah, well so happy for that kids.
- 6:31So happy for Caleb. You know, unfortunately he gets
- 6:35a positive covid test two days before the draft, so he can't go
- 6:39up and walk across the stage but man, I love that.
- 6:45He's going to a defensive minded head coach love that.
- 6:51Yeah, good. Good to go to defensive-minded
- 6:53head coach. You know, still guys in the
- 6:55first round, despite some of the the buzz about the injuries and
- 6:59things like that, they were going around, glad to see that.
- 7:03You know, teams didn't quite take that as seriously as maybe
- 7:07some of the pundits did and 22 little sad for me that he's at
- 7:11the Titans. So I'll be pulling for him
- 7:16occasionally but names a year. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:21Unless it's like, we ate 17 and if they win, they're in your out
- 7:26like sorry. Caleb lose.
- 7:27You will lose it. Now didn't take long to the You
- 7:33know, he was off the board after candle, when all the 22, 23
- 7:37Minnesota Vikings, select Christian.
- 7:39Dara saw Big Sea, Dog going up to the North country and they
- 7:46needed line, help. Obviously, they're sticking with
- 7:49Kirk right now is a quarterback. They took mon later, but, you
- 7:54know, you think about what Mike Zimmer likes to do?
- 7:59Is no cool guy. He's a big run.
- 8:00The football, they've got Dalvin cook you You know, you're still
- 8:04paying Kirk a lot of money tend to have a rookie come in.
- 8:08I think they've knocked it out of the park, personal knocked it
- 8:11out of the park. Absolutely.
- 8:14It's what they needed. It's what they needed to help
- 8:19with the, the way their scheme operates.
- 8:22So, great scheme. Pick great need pick and I just,
- 8:25I think he's going to do really well with the Vikings and I feel
- 8:29like they still got a steel getting him as late as 23
- 8:32because I could have seen him going.
- 8:33In the top 10. He's really could have, um, in
- 8:37the one pig trying to think it was the god of USC, who was
- 8:42where a lot of people put what fourth, or fifth offensive
- 8:45tackle. The Jets traded up to get him a
- 8:49little interested by that. Because of what they do, I
- 8:53always thought Tucker was more of a power guy versus a Zone.
- 8:57And since they're going to be running the Shanahan offensive
- 9:00war zone, war zone plays than anything.
- 9:05Thing, you know, I didn't quite agree with that and then he
- 9:10flips down. It's all good.
- 9:12He still great spot for him. Probably a better spot.
- 9:16He's going to a team that up until last year had been a
- 9:21playoff team, he's going to a good culture team, same with
- 9:25portal. If both want to really good
- 9:28teams where, you know, they don't have to come in here and
- 9:31make a big splash. They just come in there and do
- 9:33their job and Are building their reputations up.
- 9:37Yep. Exactly.
- 9:39So next in a probably guy looking like he was going to be
- 9:47probably somewhere between 120 160 Divine.
- 9:49Diablo goes way up but it is graders.
- 9:54That's the Raiders. That's not a shock.
- 9:58Those to pick a tea in the most interesting part.
- 10:01I don't know if you caught this on Friday night From.
- 10:06Did you hear what? They announced a mass.
- 10:09Yes, weak side outside linebacker right?
- 10:11We and what divine being 63 225? I mean, you can do it.
- 10:20Yeah, I think that's a good fit for him because it lets it plays
- 10:23to his strengths and it also gives the Raiders versatile
- 10:30nickel package where they can kind of do a lot of different
- 10:33things. Don't his alignment pre-snap.
- 10:37So I like that for them being able to not have to solve a lot.
- 10:41So I think that's a good pick for them and, you know, the
- 10:44Raiders not quite as stable, I guess of a franchise as the
- 10:49Titans and Vikings have been of late, but at the same time, not
- 10:53terribly, very, very feast, or famine type type franchise, but
- 10:58definitely some potential there with, with Chucky pulling the
- 11:00strings. Absolutely again.
- 11:05I think it's keep it, it's good. I think just the way he's built,
- 11:08he's becoming you're going to see it more and more guys who
- 11:12played the free and strong positions in college who don't
- 11:15quite have the great range, but can tackle still have good
- 11:19speed. They're going to start putting
- 11:21that weak side. Linebacker to your point.
- 11:23It gives you excellent. Excellent nickel packages
- 11:27because guys like him, although against guys like George Kettle
- 11:33in the elite tight end, Still might not be able to completely
- 11:39contain or completely control them.
- 11:41He will contain them to, you know, he had six catches for 80
- 11:44yards great, well if you put the other smell out there he would
- 11:48have went 12 4190 into touchdown.
- 11:51It needs. We have someone that can control
- 11:53in a little bit because of size and feet.
- 11:56Exactly. All right.
- 11:58Last hope you went off the board to me.
- 12:01So many running back will pick the head of him.
- 12:04Including, you know, my team picking one ahead of him Khalil.
- 12:11Herbert goes to the Bears. What a story from born in
- 12:16Kansas? I'm having some monster games
- 12:19there but never becoming the one.
- 12:22Transferring, the portal coming to Tech season without paying
- 12:25having one of the most unbelievable seasons for a
- 12:28running back in the history rivaling, you know, David
- 12:30Wilson's, Brian Williams Darren Evans.
- 12:35Thugs type Seasons. I mean, just just just so happy
- 12:39for him because that guy went on a journey from Florida.
- 12:42I mean, a journey we think that fit for him there.
- 12:46I think fit is going to be. I think it's good because he can
- 12:49work some, as we've seen we he did a lot with with kick return.
- 12:53He can work some there and he because of the stable of running
- 12:58backs they had it's going to be a little tough sledding to get
- 13:02snatched, but I think he's a very good complementary.
- 13:04A fit in a kind of a three type skill, specific rotation there
- 13:12and I think he could work himself into a position where
- 13:15he's kind of that that one a in the, in the rotation.
- 13:20So I'm hoping that he does. Well, I think I mean obviously
- 13:25we followed him all year incredible season, use numbers,
- 13:30third in the country and all-purpose yards.
- 13:34What s? The ACC in rushing yards.
- 13:37I mean he went out there and completely tore it up for us
- 13:41this past year. And you know, he showed that you
- 13:46know we saw flashes of it at Kansas in a shared role once he
- 13:50got the lead back status with us, he really showed that he
- 13:54could carry that load and do everything that a running back
- 13:57is asked of Absolutely couple other undrafted guys Jarrod
- 14:02Hewitt to the Seahawks Oscar. Brad Burns going to get a chance
- 14:07with the Vikings Brian Johnson with the Bears.
- 14:09Justice Reed going down to the Titan.
- 14:12So other guys getting signed, I know I'm probably missing a
- 14:16couple. I'm trying my best here, but
- 14:20those guys are least getting can't advise for a way to work.
- 14:23Potentially on it. The one of those for, I
- 14:26mentioned to watch out for, to get a starting job.
- 14:28Job Brian Johnson Bears your troubles he just goes out there
- 14:33and makes like from 45 to 50 consistently.
- 14:36They'll be like you're a kicker. If you're if you're making most
- 14:40of your under 50s especially if they're if most of those are
- 14:44over 40 they don't keep you. Yes, they all because they've
- 14:48had struggles. If you can bring some degree of
- 14:50consistency to that kicking game, that's going to keep you a
- 14:53job. Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 14:57All right, let's turn little more serious note, you know,
- 15:00Devon Hunters. Plea agreement came through a
- 15:03little earlier this week. Probably, the biggest things
- 15:07that came out of this brown was obviously all the charges went
- 15:11from felonies down to misdemeanors.
- 15:13He will not serve any time other than the, essentially a couple
- 15:19days. He spent after the initial
- 15:21incident, basically two-year terms, spend it all, but One day
- 15:25for each year, you know? I mean, it took, what is it
- 15:32almost a year we're closing in on almost you're closing in on a
- 15:36year? I think it was what late June?
- 15:38Yeah, I think late June last year now.
- 15:42September last year so I could you know it's been covid guys.
- 15:50Excuse the faulty memory you know happens it happens to us
- 15:56all but now you know that passed him the way it kind of seemed he
- 16:02wanted to fight it eventually he said to himself I need to get on
- 16:05with college and other things on a chase in my life.
- 16:09This gives it down to here. And I can move on the Aquatic, a
- 16:14step forward move on. And, you know, we had talked
- 16:18about it. I posted on the, on the Twitter
- 16:21account there, you know. Hopefully, there's a path for
- 16:25him back for the Hokies. If not, I'm hoping there's a
- 16:27bathroom Back to Football somewhere.
- 16:30Good kid. I think, you know, and
- 16:33everything that he's said and done since then, I think he's
- 16:36been the right step. And, you know sometimes Life
- 16:42judges US based on on our one, bad choice there.
- 16:45And I feel like that's something that happened with him and I
- 16:48feel like he's definitely put that past him and is ready to
- 16:52move forward. And I'm hoping that he gets an
- 16:55opportunity if not in Blacksburg somewhere else.
- 16:58Yeah. If not in Blacksburg somewhere
- 16:59else hopefully in Blacksburg, you know because essentially if
- 17:04you remember everything going through all pant kind of getting
- 17:06the wheels turning here, he was doing everything was that tune?
- 17:09It looks like he was going to start at You know, Rover
- 17:13boundary safety last year. And obviously he when everything
- 17:18happened, he was out kind of change the complexity of the
- 17:20defense, she didn't have him to bind in the Middle where the
- 17:24find the starter, you know, Hunter more of the freak.
- 17:28So I don't know what has to happen.
- 17:30I know. It's probably going to be J
- 17:31board stuff or J board type stuff with, you know, Virginia
- 17:35Tech itself and then the athletics department would.
- 17:38But with the felonies gone, there's that path in me.
- 17:42E. Now it's the university with
- 17:45Babcock and then Justin its own. It's those three guys that have
- 17:51to make the decision in for kid, has been here for three plus
- 17:55years. This is the only thing he was
- 17:58done. I recruit had done everything
- 18:01asked of him. Took a red shirt.
- 18:03Did not complain. I really hope they say come
- 18:08back. Yeah, I'm right there with you
- 18:11man. Absolutely.
- 18:13Hopefully that we find something out on that front in the next
- 18:18couple weeks. But as you said getting the
- 18:20felony charges out there mean that there's no longer the the
- 18:24automatic barrier to return and removing that hopefully the
- 18:29wheels start turning here and we can get get some some Headway on
- 18:33whether or not Hunter can rejoin, the team sometime soon.
- 18:36Hopefully. Alright, news breaking today,
- 18:38that that Okey Twitter again, all three one-way weak, man.
- 18:44It's been a week, ohnoki, Twitter, he's just crying.
- 18:47Sometimes, I didn't win, if y'all just need to take about 10
- 18:49shots and just go to sleep. But I'm already Saunders, took a
- 18:53portal, the three-star Bill freshman out of Jacksonville,
- 19:01you know, the Tweet seen cordial and what's teams like, you know,
- 19:09Projected. It's lat.
- 19:13First of all, Tavian Robinson, we know can play Survivor.
- 19:18So that hurt your chances right there, and then the Wayne law
- 19:21actually probably swiped the way in and then this happens.
- 19:29And then even the portal, you know, first of all, best of luck
- 19:33to him, whatever happens, I hope you land from where we can find
- 19:36the plane time. You you said something on
- 19:40Twitter and it's sort of summed up the way we kind of feel, we
- 19:43talked about it, you put it out there.
- 19:47Yeah. So I mean we're looking at it
- 19:48from a two-prong approach here. The problem that we're having
- 19:54big time is that outside of our first two guys?
- 19:57We don't have anyone proven to play outside.
- 20:01Trades are very solid outside player.
- 20:03If not spectacular and Tay makes Please.
- 20:08But is probably better suited for the slot outside of those
- 20:12guys. There's not a whole lot of
- 20:14proven talent that can play on the edge but we got a ton of
- 20:19guys that can play the slot. Now ton of guys and it's makes
- 20:27it hard for guys to to get enough snaps to really show
- 20:31their potential. And I'm sure something like that
- 20:33is what's going on with with Tyree there and he's a talented
- 20:37kid. Made some Huge plays down in
- 20:39Florida. And I feel like he's just a guy
- 20:41that thinks that given the opportunity, given the snap
- 20:45count in practice. He can show what he can do, get
- 20:48more playing time and another place.
- 20:50So that's the choice there and, you know, I don't blame him
- 20:54there. But let's go back to the problem
- 20:56that we're having. And we look at the outside,
- 20:59guys. And the slot guys, why are we
- 21:01building the roster like this? Well, to me, it's okay to be its
- 21:06own to people. It's on the head coach.
- 21:10It's on the offensive coordinator because, right?
- 21:14Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you.
- 21:17We can't blame the other side of the ball.
- 21:18He put them at this on your far Williams and saying depart,
- 21:21partially your fault, too. Potentially.
- 21:23Yeah, but Jafar isn't the one constructing the church.
- 21:28If our supposition coach far as the guy recruiting, It's how
- 21:33Brad and it's how Justin are constructing this.
- 21:37Yeah it goes. What's the blueprint?
- 21:40Like there is in and you gotta and you got to have like, even
- 21:44if you miss on the guy that you're targeting, you know, you
- 21:47got to have some sort of fall back that fits the type of
- 21:51player that you need to fill the areas of need.
- 21:54And I feel like we just haven't had that.
- 21:58I mean, maybe one of those other guys that's working in the slot.
- 22:02An can figure out how to figure out sliding outside.
- 22:07Maybe we'll see. But maybe, I mean, as of right
- 22:09now it's just we got a log Jam. It's lat including you know, the
- 22:14guy that we've been banding about for for a while here in
- 22:19Raheem Blackshear getting more snaps in the spring.
- 22:22Probably going to be at least the rotational at that position.
- 22:26If not the number one guy coming come fall.
- 22:30It's just it's going to be Tough to see the field and I think
- 22:35Saunders was a guy. That was probably saying if you
- 22:39do the right things, you're going to get some some time and
- 22:42it just hasn't come to fruition the way he wanted it to.
- 22:45So the biggest issue with me is we should be recruiting and
- 22:52maybe some of these guys are playing X and y's, that's what
- 22:55you recruit because to me it's more than likely and you talked
- 22:59about this with Lyman Recruit the tackles if they can't play
- 23:03tackle can always go inside. If you can't play the x or the
- 23:06Y, you can always go inside likely to that position and it
- 23:12seems like the guys like your ass lat.
- 23:16This is what you are. This is what you are instead of
- 23:19looking at the 10,000 foot view. It's the or urine X and your y
- 23:24on your are receiving Corps is looking like the early 2000's
- 23:30ready? Skins were like all the damn
- 23:32receivers are like 6 foot or under yeah, like Santana Moss
- 23:37and all right. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:39The early, those are those early Randall L and yeah, everybody
- 23:44would have ball. So, again, it's on to people why
- 23:48he's leaving the program. You know, if ands and buts
- 23:53Blaine coaching staff because it is coaching staffs fault, not
- 23:56recruiting correctly and that is what it is.
- 24:00So, you know, now let's go to something that will make, you
- 24:05know, some people really happy the hard hat winners for 2020
- 24:14162 total, which you know, out of 85 on scholarship.
- 24:20I couldn't tell you how many are walk on the primary and not but
- 24:23roughly with 100 plus guys you're looking at refits of your
- 24:27roster or hidden certain benchmarks in the weight room
- 24:30which is Great. Now I look a little bit closer
- 24:33and mean both did this, who are the top guys?
- 24:37Obviously, you would only see network is morning Dax,
- 24:41hollifield was the top guy. Followed by Luke bustle, the
- 24:48walk-on wide receiver potentially.
- 24:51Maybe he's getting some PT in the fall with your lightest
- 24:54evangelicals and then you know nor L Pollard since the climate
- 24:59is definitely going to be on the committee, awesome to see
- 25:03blackston Burmeister the potential starting quarterback.
- 25:07For the Hokies we keep going down, hide Brock Hoffman and Let
- 25:13It Go Smith. I love that.
- 25:16Those two guys, Marco Lee Marconi was already a feast
- 25:22house. Doing this shows that he was
- 25:26willing to put forth that effort.
- 25:28And let's hope somebody not going to say who realizes you
- 25:33have a 235 pounds Manchild when its third and two.
- 25:37You don't have to kill your quarterback.
- 25:39I digress. Josh fupa guys, food bill, we
- 25:44was already. Keyshawn artist looks massive.
- 25:53And last but not least walk on macksville pot.
- 25:57So how do you feel about those named LeBron?
- 26:01I feel pretty good, especially, you know, seeing less this and
- 26:05Brock in there. I feel really good about those
- 26:10guys. You know, you mention Keyshawn
- 26:13artist. He looks like I'm trying to
- 26:18think, I think of what a good crew dude is swole man.
- 26:23Looks like Lattimer from the program coming down and I mean
- 26:33Yell you like seeing a leader like Dax at the top of the top
- 26:37of that list just because you know that regardless of what you
- 26:43see on the field, his leadership and the intensity that he brings
- 26:50to practices and to workouts and things like that, you know, that
- 26:55that that other players are feeding off that.
- 26:57So it's good to see him kind of at the top of the Heap there.
- 27:01Exactly some other names. Like, you're glad to see on
- 27:04here. Obviously, we saw the big squat
- 27:07the other week for the big lift the other week.
- 27:09The wing Lofton up in there. Hendrix made it.
- 27:14Big Stone Gap. Made it Armani Chapman, really
- 27:17glad to see they're not sure he made it last year.
- 27:20Hopefully that shows he's got a little bigger on the outside,
- 27:23Amari far, no, good God Almighty, if he gains, just, you
- 27:30know, we talked last year He is 255, 260 with Peggy to Features
- 27:35put on 10 pounds, in the all that sky is the limit for that
- 27:41player. Sky is the absolute limit hand
- 27:44to God if he put on that weight. So he kept his twitch, there
- 27:48might be five left tackles in the country that can
- 27:52legitimately block him one-on-one for an entire game
- 27:55without giving up, by the end of the season, nobody wanted to see
- 27:58him anyway, if he, if he takes another step that's going.
- 28:01To be dangerous. It is definitely going to be
- 28:04really, really dangerous, any other names on the list, Braun
- 28:08that called you, none that you haven't mentioned already.
- 28:14A lot of names which is a great thing to see.
- 28:17All right? Brian so While we were sleeping
- 28:22in a way. The college football's been
- 28:24discussing revising, potential change.
- 28:28Tell me about it. Curtis somewhere between 8 and
- 28:3212 is what they're saying. They're sweet spots going to be
- 28:3520, essentially solve the 12, Well, it's about 4 months ago in
- 28:43times before that we were in serious discussions.
- 28:47About having a episode about a playoff idea.
- 28:51Brian had I'm basically talking about 12 teams, five, Converse
- 28:57Champions. If a group of five can crack the
- 29:01top 12 there in home games, first forged by home game for
- 29:06the next four then home games again.
- 29:08Then we started playoffs Brian, you might need to call somebody.
- 29:17Damn, Alexa, you are listening and you it's hold the NCAA of
- 29:23all. Freaking people call your lawyer
- 29:26and Sue. Everybody, Sue, everybody who
- 29:31everybody knew everybody. But legitimately it is the way
- 29:38that it's going to go there saying 8 to 12.
- 29:42I think they're going to skip 8. And I think they're going to
- 29:44skip 84. The fact that you're going to
- 29:47have to do multiple home games. I keep hearing people say, well,
- 29:50you do, you do here, and then you do a bowl, and then you do
- 29:54another bowl, and then you have a championship, nobody's going
- 29:56to travel that much, essentially, 1 to 4 and 4 to 8
- 30:01are all going to get home games. And then we're going to go to
- 30:05the same format. We are right now in the it's
- 30:07going to be beautiful because You know, this is my opinion and
- 30:14it, whether it's right or wrong, there's my opinion, getting more
- 30:18teams. Means, there's more likelihood
- 30:20for chaos. Why?
- 30:23Because any one given Saturday any team can beat another team?
- 30:30An average team can beat an elite team with a perfect game
- 30:34plan executed flawlessly and that really high team.
- 30:39Having an off night. I go back, 2014 and a horseshoe.
- 30:44We were an average team that year with the perfect game plan,
- 30:48both sides of the ball, we'll put together against the
- 30:51eventual national champions and when that happens, chaos is
- 30:55going to ensue what also is going to happen.
- 30:58I know I'm talking a lot, Brian on your idea, but I'm laughing.
- 31:04I am going to love to see ready. Wounding number.
- 31:10Eight. Four, five, six, seven, eight,
- 31:14Florida, Gators, have to play the number 7. give me a team up,
- 31:20north Michigan. They have to go to the Michigan,
- 31:27to The Big House. On December 5th.
- 31:32When it's negative Z, when it's -5 degrees, there's snow on the
- 31:37ground. Mmm.
- 31:40Please thank him have a better opportunity to win that game.
- 31:45I went Michigan just because I was like, what's the team up?
- 31:48North it actually has a potential chance of being there.
- 31:52It sounds like that. Let's, let's go for it.
- 31:54But also the whole thing about not having useful sites for
- 31:58those first two weekends, great, because how many times do you
- 32:00see a team in a hostile environment play?
- 32:02Better versus a neutral site? Well, you're essentially getting
- 32:08one extra high-profile game for all of those good team.
- 32:14So you're at least going to get probably in the same ballpark in
- 32:19attendance and and things like that, that you would get at your
- 32:23rivalry game a long. When you add in the big-time
- 32:27bump, in revenue, from the television stuff that's going to
- 32:31come in, that's just it's hard to say no to It is, it's going
- 32:39to happen. It's going to be brilliant to
- 32:41see. I know they the one thing I saw
- 32:44was they did a 2007 model and of course, they did a 2007 or not,
- 32:49we were three, not two and it showed the breakdown and it's
- 32:54like going here to go in here. But it's going to be so much.
- 32:58The interest is going to keep going.
- 32:59Some people sign to say, it's going to dilute the regular
- 33:02season. No, it's not going to dilute the
- 33:05regular season, because if you want to stop for teens, you're
- 33:09probably in, but you go fuck around and lose your rivalry
- 33:14game. You lost your home field
- 33:17advantage. When you might have actually
- 33:19lost the home field advantage, you might go from like 429 there
- 33:22like you're in but your ass is on the road, not once, but
- 33:26twice, Ice exactly, but love it. Now, we just get in the playoffs
- 33:33like me and you kind of sit here and look back, go through all
- 33:36the years as we've been a fans, like with with a 12 team format
- 33:39good more. How many times will we have been
- 33:41there? Yeah.
- 33:42In the last 25 years. Like 15 probably I mean most to
- 33:47it like 99 definitely 01. 97-95 04 05, 07 08, 10 and 11.
- 34:05And it just gives you a chance and what it's going to do much
- 34:08like March Madness. More fan bases.
- 34:11Believe they can make it there. Yep.
- 34:14The more you can give a fanbase belief that they can make the
- 34:17playoffs. As you get into November people,
- 34:21don't turn off the TV's. People don't not, everybody
- 34:24makes money. Everybody makes money.
- 34:28Everybody makes money. All right guys.
- 34:31So what we're looking at this week, if you haven't already
- 34:33checked it out with some clips off of hokey access on the ACC
- 34:38Network aired. After the baseball game.
- 34:40Last week actually are tonight at 9:00 and we pulled some clips
- 34:45that we want to talk about things or seeing things.
- 34:48We're hearing some funny things. Some things we want to get the
- 34:52clap to some things. We want to be more critical of.
- 34:56So I let's start the first couple Clips here, bro.
- 34:58Ron. All right.
- 34:59Here we go, buddy. That's a good look.
- 35:02Hey, that's too good. Rest.
- 35:03Thanks for leaving me hanging boss.
- 35:04It's all good. I don't worry about it.
- 35:05It's over now. Oh, got you.
- 35:07I'm playing it. Wired letting you know?
- 35:09Oh man. But I'm going around to various
- 35:11players at each position group and ask them how their position
- 35:15coach is servicing them. How's he doing for you?
- 35:17To find out the stitches? Go smoothie got you right?
- 35:20How's he doing for you good? Yeah.
- 35:24He what you need as a Corners coach.
- 35:25Yeah, good. Good.
- 35:28During strong. Not a snitch.
- 35:31Each favorite coach on the staff.
- 35:36I got it. Don't say me.
- 35:37That was a mic position. Coach.
- 35:40Yeah, getting you right. Again, you what you need, as a
- 35:42wideout pops off the field. Yeah, I have.
- 35:48Matt cardle has been for you, man.
- 35:49How's it going? How's he doing?
- 35:51All right, real good. Slow down like that and coach
- 35:58little bit for you. Right.
- 35:59How about you think he'd be a coach one day?
- 36:02Good jealous from me. Not a snitch.
- 36:11That's some good stuff right there.
- 36:14It when we talk about J Hamm, you know, the big thing that we
- 36:17always talk about J Hamm. Is that he brings The it Factor
- 36:24as a coach? Yes, he does.
- 36:26I don't know. A better way to describe it than
- 36:28that. It Factor.
- 36:30He is see it back. There is no other way to say
- 36:33Brian. It's it.
- 36:36He just like his him interacting with players with coaches with
- 36:41media, it looks effortless. I know it's not.
- 36:44I know that whether it's, you know, his experience or whatever
- 36:51it is that it's a lot of work to get to that point but it just,
- 36:55it looks so effortless. He just seems like a good
- 37:00culture Fit For What Virginia Tech likes to do but also as
- 37:04good of a brand ambassador. Faster, as you could find as a
- 37:08coach. Absolutely.
- 37:10You talking about brand ambassador, but I want that guy
- 37:13in front of the mic every single time.
- 37:16There's anything to deal with o.p.p., obviously we talked
- 37:19about earlier, the restrictions lifting, I am hoping that
- 37:23Richmond who Club has a hook and Club dinner in July.
- 37:26And I'm hoping he's a speaker. Because me and you will throw
- 37:29some money down and we will go to that in a heartbeat to hear
- 37:32that man talk. But it's also it's his
- 37:35personality that I think. It's also a guy, you can also,
- 37:39you know, see we play multiple positions, he has to learn how
- 37:43to talk the more people in different ways and then he went
- 37:48to the NFL and you talked about like training his, it VMI He
- 37:56wasn't at a big school. This is who he is.
- 37:59This is one of those things you get lucky, and obviously,
- 38:03talking with the players asking, what they need, are they giving
- 38:06you what you need? Talking about the coaches, just
- 38:08getting a feel for everybody. I'm sure there were
- 38:11conversations in there that they probably edited out where I'm
- 38:14talking. I'm just not, I'm just not right
- 38:16right now coach. And I wish they would have
- 38:19showed one of those in the conversation.
- 38:21He had. I know I'm part of one.
- 38:25And I think it was Dorian strong.
- 38:27It was, he talked about. If you can remember how to do
- 38:30all your daps that you can't remember your covers.
- 38:32There is a problem. Like yea, he did that just
- 38:37before he asked him about about. Smitty, is basically saying to
- 38:45me, it's nice. As smooth as saying, make sure,
- 38:49you know what to focus on. Yeah.
- 38:52Work comes first, get the other stuff in there too, but the work
- 38:55comes, you know, got a got to keep the focus where it needs to
- 38:57be. Yeah.
- 38:58Now the next clip you're going to put is this is a difference
- 39:02of that was the fun, joking. Being easy.
- 39:06I'm a, this clip speaks for itself and not brown.
- 39:08When it comes back, I want you to go right into what he's
- 39:11talking about there as a guy who played.
- 39:13All right, here we go, buddy. Things that are swirling around
- 39:17in your mind are happening. Here's what you need to know the
- 39:21same way you feel right now is the same way.
- 39:24That every young safety has felt.
- 39:27You gotta understand that you got to Divine Diablo, you look
- 39:32at him and it's like whenever we don't ever miss anything right,
- 39:35Devon Diablo felt the same way, you felt.
- 39:38There's no way around it. You work through it and what you
- 39:41trying to get to is how you watch the game, the press
- 39:45fast-forward. The film.
- 39:47Just like, what am I looking at? All.
- 39:49Keep your rap, but your goal is to work, until it looks like now
- 39:53you press slow motion. You see what I'm saying?
- 39:56When you get it to where it looks like slow motion now,
- 39:59you're balling. Yeah, I mean that is just you
- 40:06know, we talk about it all the time with the the interaction as
- 40:09with the players, but I think the way he communicates he's not
- 40:16a, he doesn't strike me as that hard-ass coach but he's also not
- 40:20rah-rah, he's kind of somewhere in the almost like that Mentor
- 40:25type type of leadership role. And I think that speaks to a lot
- 40:31of these players because he's talking to I'm at their level
- 40:33and he's not just talking about You know how to get better but
- 40:38he's also talking about, hey, it's okay to feel this way.
- 40:42Everybody's been there, but you got to push forward to get to
- 40:46the next step because if you stay where you're at, you're not
- 40:50going to go any further. yeah, I like the way you put it with
- 40:54mental, he's the mentor that will He partially your boss and
- 40:59he will bust your balls, whether you're slacking not studying
- 41:03correctly, but he's also trying to communicate with you.
- 41:07In ways you can get better and as he was talking to him
- 41:11especially about the fast forward in the slow mode, I
- 41:15think people can visualize that and you Bud Foster talked about
- 41:20it for years. When this doesn't think in this,
- 41:24just does the work the feet. Do the work.
- 41:27It's Was like, slow motion because the brain is not
- 41:29thinking the brain is just reacting, and again, he is that
- 41:34middle. He's got a little hardness, he's
- 41:37got a little rah-rah. He's got a little, jokester and
- 41:40him. I also think there's times where
- 41:42he probably lazy Lauda and because I'm sure there are
- 41:46people out there slacking and not taking advantage of their
- 41:50opportunities, will he can sit there and say, I was here, I did
- 41:54good, they move me. I was here, I did good and they
- 41:57move. Me over here and I still did
- 41:58good. There's no excuse work and how
- 42:04the next clip. Braun.
- 42:06I swear to God about almost peed my pants when I, when I wouldn't
- 42:09this clip happen this is just hilarious.
- 42:12Yes. Are we rolling our entire
- 42:15relationship before? We were married was built off of
- 42:18restaurants and movies. That's all we did.
- 42:20Our first date, he took me to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.
- 42:23The joke was on her because we started dating.
- 42:27I was like, still trying to get back in.
- 42:28The NFL had a little Bit of Pocket Change left over.
- 42:32She thinks she's like falling for a guy that's going to get
- 42:36back in the NFL, as it turned out.
- 42:38I took a job for about six bucks, an hour as a strength
- 42:41coach she truth. I want the world to know, or the
- 42:45Hokey world and no on our honeymoon, she checked my bank
- 42:48account and started crying. That's a true story.
- 42:54Justin. Well, that is true.
- 42:56It is true. I probably should have cried to.
- 42:58I was naive I love the last line.
- 43:05I probably should have cried to. I was not Eve to Ruth's Chris
- 43:11because he was bald and probably had either a roommate or
- 43:18somebody who's blind rent. Yeah.
- 43:20And once you got past the room, babe is and it was all on you he
- 43:27got real real quick. Exactly.
- 43:30That does this, that it's hilarious.
- 43:32And it's also hilarious that a lot of us.
- 43:35This is one of those relatable moments to anybody probably
- 43:41anything about their ages when they were dating because he's
- 43:43probably a mid 20s when they were dating because he was in
- 43:46League about three years. Who doesn't when they're
- 43:52initially. First dating tried to go to the
- 43:55nicest restaurant potentially available Charlie's.
- 43:58Yep. Charlie's, you know, and the
- 44:03whole bank account thing. You know, you can tell J Hamm
- 44:08wasn't given anything. He tried to make the NFL, his
- 44:13knee messed up. He didn't make it God for the
- 44:16six-dollar six dollars, an hour job to stay in football.
- 44:22And we're talking probably what 10, 12 years later.
- 44:26Hands. I read, right?
- 44:28Yep. I was probably 2007 2008.
- 44:33You know, he flipped that in 12 years to almost half a million
- 44:39dollar salary that's That's impressive, that's an impressive
- 44:43rise. That's an impressive path to get
- 44:47there, especially because probably two-thirds of that, he
- 44:51was making probably what we make, or maybe maybe just under
- 44:56or just over depending on what where the landing slot was.
- 45:00Wow. So yeah, that's a big climb in
- 45:05up in a pretty short period of time, so he knows how to grind
- 45:09and I think he can impart that on the players.
- 45:13You know, we always talked about with J, Hamm last year, when
- 45:16there were some struggles, especially in the first part of
- 45:18the season on defense, you know, a lot of this, it's covid
- 45:25related. I know everyone's dealing with
- 45:28it, but not everyone was installing a new defense with a
- 45:31new defensive coordinator. So there's some differences
- 45:34there, but everything else that J Hamm brings to the table.
- 45:39I mean, that's just Can't just bottle that in or buy that off
- 45:45the street. I mean, there's a lot of
- 45:48intangible things that Justin Hamilton brings to Virginia Tech
- 45:53that you just can't find anywhere and it's not just the
- 45:55fact that he played here. Yep.
- 45:58It's very true. And, but having him play, Hey,
- 46:01you know, he loves this place and, you know, he will sell this
- 46:04place as hard as he can or some Schmo off the street, who's here
- 46:08for half million dollar. Pay check, and that's one thing
- 46:11you got. love about him next clip here, go ahead roller Braun
- 46:16and then we'll chat about it because this is this is some
- 46:18deeper stuff as well, there we go, but Obviously not traveling
- 46:27to see your wife and kids the recruiting peace with covid is
- 46:31good but also like I have that and I mean to have a kid be able
- 46:35to stop by and look at 30 minutes 45 minutes.
- 46:41Sometimes it goes long, I try to keep it where it's within a 30
- 46:45to 45-minute window because after that your yeah, you better
- 46:50give them social media break or something.
- 46:53Because it's hard to keep the attention plus.
- 46:54I don't want to do information overload.
- 46:56He's I mean he's The Godfather to me.
- 47:00I remember being on the offensive side of the ball and
- 47:04back in the old team room, we had the divider like the
- 47:07elementary school divider. You could hear everything in the
- 47:11unit meetings that was going on. We were in our unit meetings and
- 47:13I was trying to pay attention in ours, I'm listening to him the
- 47:16way he was juicing the team up and building their confidence
- 47:20and the standard and the demand. And it was like man this guy
- 47:24must be awesome to play for and then when I got a chance to do
- 47:28it I realized that he's awesome to play for.
- 47:31If you know what you're doing and if you don't, then he's
- 47:34going to bring you to speed. Um clearly shows you the
- 47:40affection he has for budman, and the affection that probably was
- 47:45drifted across those walls for the de for the offensive side.
- 47:51When Bud was at his Peak. You know that Justin talking
- 47:54about early 2000 when the defense was essentially the one
- 47:58of the best in the nation for something years running.
- 48:04And again, we talked about it a few minutes ago.
- 48:08A guy that went from one side of the ball to the other play for
- 48:11that guy. You don't think he takes some of
- 48:13his qualities away. Oh, absolutely, dude.
- 48:18Surely after that clip, you talked about the, you know, the
- 48:22picture of them that's been circulating a lot and talked
- 48:26about, you know, how do you know when to make the right call and
- 48:32he's like, you know, a lot of it, a lot of its gut, but he
- 48:34said, a lot of it was late nights on Wednesday watching
- 48:37tape. After all the other coaches at
- 48:39left and what. So I think I think that's the
- 48:42big thing that jam takes from it is that it's part, trusting your
- 48:46instincts and part put in the work, but in the work that piece
- 48:50you maybe talk about that Wednesday night.
- 48:52He said he liked doing the full team from the full thing.
- 48:55But on Wednesdays was like, is night.
- 48:58He said, in the film by himself, And again, that's something
- 49:03wonder if he brings in where it's like wasting my time going
- 49:05to be here till 3:00 in the morning and I am going to try to
- 49:09look at every little tendency to this team has and when they tip
- 49:13it I'll run a banger that was one of my favorite lines you cut
- 49:17it out thank you baby. And how many times in our
- 49:22lifetime with bud He called the perfect call against whatever
- 49:28they are running and it would massive loss.
- 49:31Huge sack pick almost every third down against Ohio State.
- 49:36The, I've heard that yes, be seemingly had every single one
- 49:42of our buyers Tendencies figured out that night and he
- 49:45capitalized on all of them. Going back to the first part
- 49:49though. A, he mentions obviously covid
- 49:51being with his family. For those listening on the
- 49:54podcast, you can see the literally jehan's whole family
- 49:58is in there. Looks like they're having a
- 49:59pizza lunch, you know? See the whole episode, he's
- 50:03running around the kids come in. They talk about going a Shabbos
- 50:06office, getting candy playing, the weight room, really
- 50:10family-oriented guy, man, but he also mentioned about a big side
- 50:15was having guys coming to the office 20-30 minutes.
- 50:18And just look at tape, and again, it shows you that
- 50:21connection. But again also showed you
- 50:24generational to that Once it hits 30, I we got cut off
- 50:28because someone's going to take a little break, will take other
- 50:31great walk around gonna get a sip check your check your
- 50:34profiles and we'll be back at it in 10.
- 50:38Exactly. But you know, the one thing and
- 50:44I'm going to be, I'm going to go on a little down or note here.
- 50:47The one thing that next year scares me about and it's not
- 50:53about so much if we have a bad season, Justin Hamilton probably
- 51:01not coming back. There's some people on the staff
- 51:04that probably will be Justin proper warm and that breaks my
- 51:07heart because a, it's a guy we watched.
- 51:11It's a guy, we watched, you know, your first game was 02.
- 51:14My first game was up, the key was only feel for those plays.
- 51:18He was almost filled enough format team and, you know, and
- 51:23if we look at our fan Hood 95, we were kids, we were right at
- 51:29and we're going to go into Middle School, right in Middle
- 51:31School, 99 were in high. A school 04 is our team.
- 51:37I think go for Zak team. Yeah, we were both.
- 51:40You were Sydney. I was in long.
- 51:42Would we watch games together when we could?
- 51:47You know, we talked about it. I know we I want up the games
- 51:50that year. I feel like you went to one game
- 51:52at you, like getting your off week.
- 51:54I only have one game. I was another word, many years,
- 51:58but he was part of that special team.
- 52:01Yeah. What hurts me is I look for in
- 52:04the way I'm feeling towards next season, is when we might lose
- 52:08this guy. So it's one of those things
- 52:11where I hope we knock it out of the ballpark.
- 52:14I hope I'm stoked freaking wrong next.
- 52:17What I'm seeing from this team because I want that guy in
- 52:20Blacksburg. I want that guy on campus.
- 52:22I want that guy to be a defensive coordinator.
- 52:24Yeah. I mean just everything you
- 52:27watch. I mean he's very likeable and I
- 52:31think as long as we can get some of the results, hopefully we can
- 52:35do enough to keep him around. And I don't know what else to
- 52:44say, man. I mean, we like jam on this
- 52:46program, guys. We do that's just the long and
- 52:49short of it. Yes, I'd like to see, like I
- 52:52said, I like to see a little bit better results in that money, 21
- 52:58on that side of the ball but there was a lot of reasons why
- 53:02you didn't see him early last year.
- 53:04So on that side of the ball, I'm willing to give a little bit of
- 53:07a pass until 2021, and we'll see what happens.
- 53:11But in terms of just personality in a guy, you like to have as
- 53:14your head your your defensive coordinator doesn't get any
- 53:18better. Absolutely right.
- 53:21Let's roll on less precooked. We talk about Spring ball.
- 53:27Oh, and general. And we have had a huge of sis.
- 53:32Pulling the football, you know, taking care of the ball, taking
- 53:36away football, with some more conscientious effort on the ball
- 53:42on both sides of the ball, we made a huge point of emphasis,
- 53:48on third down, or very good on either side of the ball on third
- 53:53down last year. Starting five back on 35k him
- 53:5735. And then like we really got to
- 54:03get back to the way. We practice used to be kind of
- 54:06our signature and we drifted away from that partially last
- 54:12year because we didn't practice and when we did it was just
- 54:17trying to make sure we had enough people there to get
- 54:19through it. But and the guys have done a
- 54:22really good job of that today will be third down in phasis and
- 54:29some Red Zone stuff. Spring ball, emphasis.
- 54:36Keep control of the football, get better on third down on both
- 54:40sides of the ball and practice like you damn.
- 54:44Well mean it. But you got cured.
- 54:48I'm just glad you admitted it. We work and we were terrible
- 54:52last year, on third down both sides of the ball.
- 54:55We were. I'm glad he said it out loud.
- 54:58I'm glad he set it where the entire fans could hear him say
- 55:04it, because it was that there were games last year, and I go
- 55:10back to the North Carolina game, but that, third down play that
- 55:14third down play, is another play called in sick.
- 55:16Converted. I think that game changes.
- 55:19I think we win that game because I think we took their first
- 55:22three on punches hard. We got up and beat the shit out
- 55:25of them for the next two rounds for the next six rounds.
- 55:28I think we win that game, but we screwed up Wake Forest.
- 55:31Jesus freaking Christ. Don't make me go again.
- 55:36But at least, we have him admitted it on tape.
- 55:39Now, the other part is to take away thing and that's a big
- 55:42thing. Because there were games last
- 55:44year when we were protecting the ball.
- 55:46Well, we Did good and there were games like BC when we stole the
- 55:50ball from them numerous times that essentially it prevented
- 55:55their momentum every time from going somewhere.
- 55:58Yeah so I'm glad to hear that now that I've wished would have
- 56:04been a little more detailed. Well okay what are you going to
- 56:07do to fix it? Because here's some things that
- 56:10we can say. They him hadn't had a chance to
- 56:14install his offense or his defense, excuse me.
- 56:18We can write that up and say that's probably why.
- 56:20Third down wasn't very not enough execution.
- 56:23Run the plays you want. There were times where you saw
- 56:26mr. Solomon is like and Brian.
- 56:28I'm sure you went over there. Numerous times.
- 56:30You probably just killed your head at your house and just
- 56:33said, fuck was the guy who was supposed to be there?
- 56:39It's the again it's the other side that worries me.
- 56:42Yep it's year. Five.
- 56:44Who was year five in a lot of the same shit we saw for the
- 56:49first four years showed up in the fifth year, are you going to
- 56:52do anything in the six-year to change it?
- 56:54Justin Yeah. I mean it would have it would be
- 56:57nice to I mean, I know he's not very big on giving the
- 57:01opponent's anything, but I think it would be nice to see some
- 57:05sort of plan as far as how they're going to achieve that.
- 57:09What we've got the, the the areas of emphasis.
- 57:12All right. So now that we've got the
- 57:13area's, how are you emphasizing that, is this more are there
- 57:20more drills and emphasize that we, at least got to see some,
- 57:23some drills there with ball /. Action and things like that.
- 57:27So that was good to see. But you know, what else?
- 57:30What else are they doing to protect the ball?
- 57:33What else are they doing? To keep the ball out of the
- 57:36other teams hands and what else are they trying to do on defense
- 57:39to, you know, Force those turnovers which is Less infus
- 57:43Direct category, but still under his purview as head coach there.
- 57:47So it'll be interesting to see if that comes to fruition.
- 57:50I mean ball. Security has always been a big
- 57:53big point of emphasis for Foo. It's that Every Spring practice,
- 57:57every fall Camp. That's been like, the nature of
- 58:01every quarterback battle that we've had first season without a
- 58:05quarterback battle though. But for every emphasis emphasis
- 58:09of every, every quarterback battle was making sure that they
- 58:12protected the football how to run with this one start and GAP.
- 58:16Then, excellent question. I would like to get into some
- 58:21guys who are in that in those practices we like how how All
- 58:26right. Brian next segment here, and I'm
- 58:30going to do a little intro to this one.
- 58:49So go bronze eagle has labeled this, The Good, the Bad, and the
- 58:53Ugly of Coach Fuente, have a listen, and you'll probably
- 58:57agree. They stripped out all 15
- 59:00practices this year. I scripted 1 through 12 and let
- 59:0713 of 14 and 15 open its those what we actually need.
- 59:13But I like that part of it because I take 1 3, 1 4, 5, or 1
- 59:17through 6 and say this is what we're going to work on.
- 59:20These are points of emphasis and then the next second, you know,
- 59:24whatever it is 69 or 79. However, it all falls week by
- 59:29week ending on a Saturday scrimmage.
- 59:58Leadership to not accept anything other than the same
- 1:00:02type of enthusiasm and passion for today, today's the day,
- 1:00:07okay? Saturday, we're going to
- 1:00:08scrimmage and you guys are going to be fired up and ready to go.
- 1:00:11Today is the day that we have to separate ourselves from
- 1:00:15everybody else. Family on three one, two, three.
- 1:00:18Well, do you stick with this? It's going to all work out.
- 1:00:21I may not work out tomorrow, you know.
- 1:00:22I don't know when it's going to be.
- 1:00:24I'm just gonna tell you, like, if you have Grid or toughness
- 1:00:29and stick-to-itiveness, and we'll bust your eyes and
- 1:00:31continue to develop and work out.
- 1:00:36Okay, let's start with the last one.
- 1:00:37Let's start with the last one. Let's start with the ugly.
- 1:00:41The grit. In Tallis and
- 1:00:44stick-to-itiveness, that's where this is my theory on that.
- 1:00:49I think the Saturday before they take this because obviously this
- 1:00:53would have been. It would have been Monday or
- 1:00:56Tuesday of the week. They take, this is what I think
- 1:00:59happened. I think coach went ahead all the
- 1:01:01coaches over for a little barbecue, right?
- 1:01:03Yep, barbecued. Let's have some beers.
- 1:01:06We probably just had some producing stuff that day.
- 1:01:08Going through, what's going to happen next week with the show
- 1:01:11and they're sitting around their hand be And somebody says go
- 1:01:16through probably then place. I put Vice on this more than
- 1:01:20anybody. I don't know why I just I think
- 1:01:22Watson what's the offensive line and I think you do this or shit
- 1:01:26I think Boo, I bet you can't get these three things into that
- 1:01:32episode and some way 1:30 and first, and everything on the
- 1:01:37other side of the fire pit and all the coaches looking Vice and
- 1:01:40then they all look at him bullshit, put 10 cats, this is
- 1:01:46beer brands up shakes each other's hands and then he snuck
- 1:01:50it in there with a walk-on from stewartson giraffe.
- 1:01:54Probably the only time that guy will ever see any television
- 1:01:58time. Time.
- 1:02:00Here is hokey Chris. And no knock to it.
- 1:02:02No, not to me but he's a walk-on offensive lineman.
- 1:02:05Yep. No stories are few and far
- 1:02:07between. Yeah, I mean, when you look at
- 1:02:10it like that, it's Again we talk about it all the time with the
- 1:02:16buzzwords and again that's fine for like you know you get you
- 1:02:24know you get the we used to get like the binders with are like
- 1:02:28summer workouts or you know you get your playbook.
- 1:02:32You however it's delivered to you.
- 1:02:34I tablet iPhone. Whatever that's fine for like
- 1:02:37stuff like that. That's fine for, you know,
- 1:02:41meetings where you're talking to a large group of people.
- 1:02:43Oil, that's not the type of individual interaction that
- 1:02:47feels organic and real to me and I feel like there's other.
- 1:02:53There's other interactions that were significantly better for
- 1:02:57that for food but that felt at felt forced and trait and out of
- 1:03:04that it has to be that he has to be trolling.
- 1:03:08There's no way that's not a troll.
- 1:03:10This is Oh man. But let's go back to practice 11
- 1:03:17though because I feel like that is the good in that
- 1:03:21three-section clip. There is that I feel like that
- 1:03:25that was some, that was some good motivational talk but it
- 1:03:29also personalized it. Yes, he did.
- 1:03:31It put things in perspective, for the players heading into,
- 1:03:35not just practice 11, but knowing that.
- 1:03:38All right, guys, fucking scrimmage is coming up.
- 1:03:40We got to get right? So we can get the most out of
- 1:03:42that scrimmage. Each and I think that that was a
- 1:03:45good, a good way of bringing those ideas to the table and
- 1:03:49getting the players ready for that.
- 1:03:51That practice 11. Oh yeah, Hunter isn't that
- 1:03:54seemed very genuine also the way he talked to the leaders because
- 1:03:59he liked me single them's out and I'm sure they're the team
- 1:04:02captains and the unit Captain's know who they are and it's
- 1:04:05almost like everybody's happy practice one everybody.
- 1:04:09This practice 11 we've hit each other.
- 1:04:12We we've been grinding. We've been lifting, we're
- 1:04:14probably not feeling the best bringing that enthusiasm because
- 1:04:18what happens is you're going to get in November and regardless
- 1:04:22of your record, the enthusiasm that you had the first few weeks
- 1:04:26or the enthusiasm for a big night game or something. 12:00
- 1:04:31in pit is not going to be the same thing, so it's almost like
- 1:04:36getting them mentally train. There's any situations, you've
- 1:04:38got to be able to bring that energy and obviously, there are
- 1:04:41some times last year primarily that Liberty game when the team
- 1:04:46did not bring the energy. No, I said with the, we have
- 1:04:49this year as Leaders go, I don't think that's going to be
- 1:04:52missing. Now, let's go to the bad.
- 1:05:00We talked about this earlier anytime I hear and I don't care.
- 1:05:05If this is a head coach, a corporate trainer teacher
- 1:05:12Professor, whatever line of business you're in I have these
- 1:05:1615 scheduled just like this because it's the way I want it.
- 1:05:20I immediately say did you fucking up already?
- 1:05:24If you're planning that far then you're already setting.
- 1:05:28Elf up to fail, to get, even with with the modification.
- 1:05:32I mean, three practices isn't enough, in my opinion to Circle
- 1:05:36back on on the need areas. I felt like you go like 10 and 5
- 1:05:42or something like that where and even maybe take a building block
- 1:05:46approach to it, where you're kind of installing and or
- 1:05:50emphasizing different things at different weeks and then use
- 1:05:55kind of the end to Circle back either bring It full circle or a
- 1:05:58circle. Check on those areas that you
- 1:05:59saw that were concerning on. Yeah, I think I will give him
- 1:06:04credit essentially. Leaving the last three open.
- 1:06:08Does give the opportunity though to.
- 1:06:11Let's look at what we did. The first 11 practices.
- 1:06:14Is there anything specifically, we need to work on really
- 1:06:16hardcore the days. So it's okay.
- 1:06:18But I'm with you. You don't put it in practice,
- 1:06:2112, 13 and 14. You put it in practice 5, but it
- 1:06:25practice 10, you sort of you You spread them out.
- 1:06:29So, after that first week of practice, you know what?
- 1:06:33If you know the Zone drills that were running by the offensive
- 1:06:37baby killing it, and they've been getting up, they be getting
- 1:06:40the second level they've been handing off, great, do you need
- 1:06:43to work on that note? But let's say pass Pro handoff
- 1:06:47have been shitty shitty. That's what you're working on
- 1:06:51today or lying or brown. Your favorite safeties.
- 1:06:56You guys have for sending your zones and government of outfit.
- 1:06:59Awesome. But Brian went to safety
- 1:07:02sometimes screw up. Run Phillips.
- 1:07:07Screw that up. Let's pray.
- 1:07:10So it's bad because it seems like he was very set in at 15.
- 1:07:14Now he has come off of it a little bit but again the way
- 1:07:17we're singing it is maybe even need to adjust it a little bit
- 1:07:21more. That's just us.
- 1:07:26Yeah. I mean I have nothing
- 1:07:28necessarily blatantly wrong to say that that's the wrong
- 1:07:32approach but I just feel like the full scripting was
- 1:07:36definitely a problem. So whatever he was doing before,
- 1:07:40maybe this is him evaluating and saying hey we need to have
- 1:07:44something at the end here where we're like I said either
- 1:07:47circling back to what didn't work or kind of looping
- 1:07:52everything into Are these three practices are going to be, you
- 1:07:57know, heavy emphasis on, you know, whether it's like half
- 1:08:01line or, you know, scrimmage sections, whatever it may be,
- 1:08:07there's going to be some sort of emphasis to either bring it all
- 1:08:09together or Circle back on the things that we saw in those
- 1:08:13previous 10 or 12 that didn't work the way we wanted to.
- 1:08:18Absolutely, I boats. Last clip we look at tonight.
- 1:08:24Through this brings out a little more human side, if it weren't
- 1:08:27a. And I think, me and Brian are
- 1:08:29couple pieces of here. We definitely can relate with If
- 1:08:34standard all, I can get in in the morning, first of all, cause
- 1:08:37nobody else in usually get some things done, is kind of like my
- 1:08:41time. Plus. you know, like, my kids
- 1:08:47are involved in sports and during the Spring Time,
- 1:08:52particularly She's easier for me too.
- 1:08:57To get in early and then get out so I can go see him play, you
- 1:09:02know, so that's the number one goal is, don't hit a deer on the
- 1:09:07way to work because they outnumber the cars about 10 to
- 1:09:1015 hit a few in the evening time.
- 1:09:13I came back side, blasted by a couple of them.
- 1:09:20It's always the second deer that you're not the first one.
- 1:09:25I always traveling to his. I didn't know that.
- 1:09:27So here, like I don't have like a one go to like I do I am a
- 1:09:33music guy so I do listen to music.
- 1:09:36I have I have started got getting into the pot podcast
- 1:09:40game, you know who Neil deGrasse Tyson is, yeah, it's pretty cool
- 1:09:48strike. Blows your mind on the way to
- 1:09:51wait a way to work. The laughs the like throat
- 1:09:58clearing laugh, every time gets me, the lab is.
- 1:10:03It's so genuine though that that laugh is you know, he's being
- 1:10:07very genuine about things with me laughs like that if it's some
- 1:10:12of the sea and he even turned around and looked I'm guessing
- 1:10:14at the camera guy in the back like he's like he's are the
- 1:10:19producer that set up the cameras in the vehicle or he was, I
- 1:10:22don't know if he's filming shots back there but he was He was
- 1:10:25definitely part of the production, no doubt.
- 1:10:26And he's like, yeah, let's Neil deGrasse Tyson.
- 1:10:30Huh? Obviously big crew said he'd
- 1:10:34listen to like, two of those three Rogan EPs and I think they
- 1:10:37were like three and a half hours each.
- 1:10:39So it is a you do the de cross. Use a deGrasse Tyson, with Joe
- 1:10:43Rogan. It's like you were in for, like
- 1:10:45a half a day. I'll say this at the beginning,
- 1:10:50he told himself as an introvert. I like to get in the office when
- 1:10:53there's no bleeping body. Hey, I can get more work done,
- 1:10:56nobody bothers me. Jesus Christ, how can you be an
- 1:11:04introvert? But, you know, at least again,
- 1:11:08seeing sides of his personality. Now, some of the me and Brian
- 1:11:12will absolutely confirm. And obviously Blacksburg about
- 1:11:17two and a half hours where we grew up, but we can confirm
- 1:11:20Salman part of Virginia are is a shit ton of deer.
- 1:11:24Yeah, I caught one on the way to him and Sydney one time and it's
- 1:11:28shit all over my car, never caught any can close a few times
- 1:11:34in the truck back in the day. But he is right.
- 1:11:37Usually they do travel in packs, I'll also say watching, go
- 1:11:41watching, watch that video again, his head movement it's
- 1:11:44that is how you drive. I've only Backcountry Road at
- 1:11:474:00 in the morning, going to work.
- 1:11:49Like hell are you assholes at? You're going to jump out here
- 1:11:52and it's great to know that he's been sideswiped a couple times
- 1:11:55which sideswipes. Okay, they can pop it out of the
- 1:11:57door. Real, real freaking easy and but
- 1:12:02it's funny, he's had those incidents and obviously I'm
- 1:12:04guessing in Oklahoma, obviously wide open terrain, not much
- 1:12:08Forest, not a lot of deer hunting and if there is you can
- 1:12:12see them from miles away. Now, the one last piece I want
- 1:12:17to hit and and I'm going to, I think we relate to this hard
- 1:12:20problem. We both have kids are kids in
- 1:12:23sports. And he's talking about his girls
- 1:12:27being really involved in sports and Springtime, and his goal is
- 1:12:30to get in as early as possible get his work done.
- 1:12:33So, in the evenings, he can go see and whether you like this
- 1:12:38coach. Whether you're indifferent to
- 1:12:41this coach or you hate this coach, you must respect that
- 1:12:45because there are a lot of coaches out there that
- 1:12:46legitimately disregard their families for this business.
- 1:12:52And if you have, you know, you have kids that essentially they
- 1:12:57aren't right as adults because Dad was in the office 18 hours a
- 1:13:01week. And obviously, he values that
- 1:13:04you saw with Jay hand, to they value that.
- 1:13:07And it was said, numerous times During this show Family.
- 1:13:14And I think that's the big takeaway from this whole thing
- 1:13:16is that it's obvious that both of the coaches that were the
- 1:13:21primary focus of the All Access. They care about the players,
- 1:13:27they care about what they're doing, you might disagree with
- 1:13:30how they're doing it. You might think they're not a
- 1:13:32good fit for the for the role, but they care and they generally
- 1:13:38care about the players. They generally care about the
- 1:13:41school and they generally care about the fans.
- 1:13:44Now you might think that how they go about showing that isn't
- 1:13:49what you expect or what you want from an access standpoint from a
- 1:13:54fan interaction standpoint. I agree with you, yeah, but I
- 1:14:00think sometimes we get to a point where we cross over
- 1:14:05between tree of these guys like an employee that we don't think
- 1:14:09is up to Snuff and Someone that we genuinely dislike or hate.
- 1:14:15And I think there's a difference between those two and I think
- 1:14:18sometimes, you know, we can cross the line on that.
- 1:14:20It gives easy. We're fans were passionate when
- 1:14:23you get passionate about something you know, you say and
- 1:14:27do things that may not always aligned with what you would do
- 1:14:31in a normal situation. But like I said at the end of
- 1:14:34the day, I think both of these guys are really good for the
- 1:14:39school in terms of how they interact with.
- 1:14:42With with, with the players and the in the fans, I just think we
- 1:14:46need, we need more from them on that front, in terms of the
- 1:14:53reciprocation. Because I feel like we're
- 1:14:56getting a lot of that one way stream that we've been talking
- 1:14:59about. And, and this is another example
- 1:15:01of that. And I feel like this this gave
- 1:15:03us probably as much or more than we've gotten from any other
- 1:15:08production so far. But Like I said, I think the
- 1:15:13thing that still lacking is that that reciprocation where, you
- 1:15:17know, they're giving us something and we're giving them
- 1:15:19something back or we're showing them something or they're
- 1:15:21showing us something more of those site.
- 1:15:25Things would be great. And if this was, you know, if we
- 1:15:31had those things, this this would be probably considered one
- 1:15:35of the best access pieces that we've gotten but without those
- 1:15:41other interactions. It's kind of, this is great,
- 1:15:43but, you know, but it's the, but it's the, but it's there on the
- 1:15:48precipice of doing every doing this stuff right there on the
- 1:15:52precipice. And this season.
- 1:15:57The women lost totals is what will matter because if it is I
- 1:16:03get to see. I've said it before the season
- 1:16:05we're feeling is going to happen which is going to be good again.
- 1:16:08We hope were wrong but it is that really good to eat.
- 1:16:12And you know this staff is retained Someone in the athletic
- 1:16:18department has to just step in and say, these are things that
- 1:16:21are going to happen and if you don't like it, then you may
- 1:16:25leave because you're not going to leave obviously.
- 1:16:29And then, I think what we see with, obviously we can you hands
- 1:16:33personality, but you start seeing one more fluencies
- 1:16:35personality. It's there.
- 1:16:37You've heard of behind the scene stories.
- 1:16:39There has to be someone that said, make that be you out there
- 1:16:42every time and people will love you if you're winning games and
- 1:16:45this is who you are. You have the potential but a
- 1:16:48common second God. Excuse me, a third.
- 1:16:51God down here. But if you don't feel and who
- 1:16:55you are, they question. So, yeah.
