- 1:34Hey, welcome to you live. Taping of the Gila FedEx
- 1:36connections podcast right here at U STC.
- 1:39A, I don't know how I got talked into this, but it's live tonight
- 1:43fellas and ladies. No bleep buttons, no edits.
- 1:47We're going to see what happens today.
- 1:48In today's interviews here. So the idea tonight is, we are
- 1:52going to have coaches other people in our industry.
- 1:55I've got some awesome, people make treadmills and relay meats,
- 1:58and all that kind of stuff that we're just going to review for.
- 2:015 to 10 minutes at a time. Just really just have fun right
- 2:03here at the convention here in Denver Colorado.
- 2:06So speaking of relays, we're going to kick this off with
- 2:10still, my all-time favorite track, meet in the whole world.
- 2:13And I'm not saying that just because he's right here, I'll
- 2:15say it all day, every day. And that is we have here.
- 2:17The director of the Drake Relays.
- 2:20I've got mr. Blake Bolden Blake, welcome to
- 2:21the show. Hey, thanks Mike, thanks for.
- 2:23Thanks for having me. Thanks for putting this
- 2:24together. This is really fun and exciting.
- 2:26Yeah, we'll see you in about the two-hour Mark.
- 2:28Yeah. How excited you still, aren't
- 2:29you? Don't have hot tea.
- 2:32I need that with your years with screws, so Blake, kick us off
- 2:36here. As we look into the 2022, u.s.
- 2:39tfcc a convention here in Denver, Colorado, I saw kind of
- 2:42a cool announcement today coming from the Drake Relays, which I
- 2:45thought might have been a little unique, tell us.
- 2:47Yeah. But what happened, which
- 2:48announced today? Thanks.
- 2:49Mike. Well, we're about 58 minutes now
- 2:52from the start of the technical. Symposiums, there are eight
- 2:55sessions for disciplines jumps throws, Sprints hurdles and
- 3:00distance. And in each of those eight
- 3:03sessions, there will be a leader in our industry talking about
- 3:07their expertise and sharing with coaches.
- 3:09So we were able to partner with Sam to sponsor those to support
- 3:13the coaches and coaches education, but also to give an
- 3:17opportunity to share the news that we announced today.
- 3:19And we align this sponsorship with this announcement that
- 3:22we've restructured, the University division of the
- 3:25Drake, Relays with a, a complete focus on performances for those
- 3:30University athlete. Now Heaven compete, not
- 3:33competed, sorry coached the Drake Relays and have an
- 3:36intended, many of them, you know, the athletes.
- 3:39What I love about the track meet is it is athlete focused at the
- 3:43Drake Relays. I mean it's really as a coach I
- 3:46really appreciated how much the athletes will take care.
- 3:49Tell us about this the sounds very double down on athlete
- 3:52since you're here on the competition.
- 3:54Yeah. Those things like clerking you
- 3:56know appropriate call times. You know friendly officiating if
- 3:59that's if they're such a If you can use that adjective for that,
- 4:03noun, we have very friendly officials that are focused on
- 4:07the student athlete experience and that opportunity to compete
- 4:12in front of fourteen thousand fans.
- 4:13And, you know, you can win the Drake Relays, you're going to do
- 4:16a Victory lap and a Champions flag and really celebrate those
- 4:19College athletes. But this is less about
- 4:21celebrating them and instead setting the table for them to
- 4:24maximize their performance. So you know for the first time
- 4:27in decades we've committed to if necessary.
- 4:31Wind reverse 100 100 hurdles and 110 hurdle finals and that's one
- 4:36of many different examples, you know.
- 4:38So we're all detailed all those improvements at Drake, Relays
- 4:41dot-org and that announcement is out today.
- 4:44But and really, what we've really done is some small
- 4:47tweaks, to Sprint, hurdles distance, but really revamped
- 4:51entirely the field of it. So that the jumps the throws and
- 4:57just recently the horizontal jumps in the throes, we're going
- 4:59to take 24 hours. Athletes to an open competition
- 5:03that's down from 32. So what that means is each
- 5:07Flight of the prelims will have twelve athletes, rather than 16
- 5:11allowing these athletes, to give a little bit better Rhythm and,
- 5:14and have less waiting time between these three rounds of
- 5:16premiums, and then nine athletes will go to the final get to get
- 5:20their chance to compete. But more than that were, and
- 5:23adding an Invitational University division, all of
- 5:26those events. So nine athletes.
- 5:29And these we may not even see. Tearful teams.
- 5:32But already some coaches today that have international athletes
- 5:35and National caliber throws particularly long throws excited
- 5:40about the opportunity to come and know that they're going to
- 5:42get six attempts. And this also means we'll have
- 5:46up to 18, Collegiate athletes, getting six attempts, nine in
- 5:49the open and nine in the what we're calling the champion
- 5:52section. You know what I love about this.
- 5:54You know, the Drake Relays is now a hundred and something
- 5:57years old which I love hundred 1313 a love that.
- 6:01At and you're continually evolving, looking to get better
- 6:04every year. Yeah, what drives you to do
- 6:06that? As you sit in the seat that you
- 6:07sit in as the Director of Drake. Relays, how are you always
- 6:10constantly thinking? What's better, how can I
- 6:12continue to make this a better and greater experience?
- 6:15Well, the coaches. I mean, you know, the student
- 6:17athlete is the focus and that's what these coaches do every
- 6:20single day and and they're incentivized to do that
- 6:23financially and otherwise and their focus on getting ready for
- 6:27their conference championships and the national championships.
- 6:30And we Our fans and we as a staff that's what we want to be
- 6:33part of. We want to find not just the
- 6:35Midwest best but the nation's best to come and show off in
- 6:38front of a sold-out crowd. And having these nine finalists
- 6:41in the field events allows us then to to place it more
- 6:44strategically in the meat program.
- 6:46So we've never been able to do long throws on and our Friday
- 6:49night program, or we've got a good crowd and good energy and
- 6:52it's later in the day because the sun sets, and it's just gets
- 6:56gets dark and are throwing sectors.
- 6:58So, for safety reasons, we blew me overthrown on.
- 7:01Friday, and Saturday afternoons or in the morning.
- 7:03So with only nine athletes six attempts, we're talking about
- 7:07getting that done in less than an hour, and it's better for the
- 7:09athletes that they can get in, get amped and then get their six
- 7:12attempts alongside eight other of the top athletes and Country.
- 7:16So I just have one favor to ask of you.
- 7:18I feel like you might have this pull.
- 7:21So my favorite event in the entire world is the shuttle
- 7:24hurdle relay. Yeah, you know, obviously in
- 7:26Iowa, first of all shout outs, Iowa has it as an actual event
- 7:30for your statement. That's right and it's a really
- 7:32famous well attended, well celebrated event at the Drake,
- 7:35Relays can we get that as an incidental, a event please?
- 7:37I just would love we love that. If the big green eyes and I know
- 7:40who else would love it, is the folks over at Indiana State and
- 7:44they do a terrific job because you represent it doesn't matter.
- 7:47Who's in that a bit, don't count out.
- 7:49Indiana state senator Morse, they're in it to win it every
- 7:52year. That's hurdle you.
- 7:53That's right, that's right way. Thanks for being here.
- 7:55You know, I'm going to end every interview tonight with what are
- 7:57you most looking forward to in 2023?
- 8:00I feel like I can answer Answer for you but I'ma let you answer.
- 8:02What are you excited for here in 23 track season?
- 8:04Yeah, 2022 and 2023 this change in University division and
- 8:09really reshaping the college section of the Drake Relays and
- 8:13seeing how coaches respond and then the momentum we get from
- 8:15this day all the way to 20 24, because right now coaches have
- 8:20set their schedules, many of them for 2023.
- 8:22So we're really talking partial squats and some of that.
- 8:26But there's already excitement about the 2024 Drake Relays and
- 8:29that reshaping the commitment. University division.
- 8:32I love it. I love it.
- 8:32We're going. And every interview with a
- 8:33selfie man in here. You were the first in the live
- 8:38event, brother. All right.
- 8:38Thanks man. Comes up.
- 8:40We'll have the next guest coming up here in just two seconds.
- 8:42We're just going to keep rotating them.
- 8:44Through all night, we're scheduled 5 to 7 p.m. but I'm
- 8:48not going to lie. If people are still waiting at 7
- 8:51p.m. I'm here all night.
- 8:52What do I got to do? I got nothing else to do.
- 8:54Except for actually this gentleman actually invited you
- 8:56to do something tonight so I will have to cut it off at some
- 8:59point tonight. So hey, introduce yourself and
- 9:01welcome to the live version of The Guild connections podcast.
- 9:07Treadmills space. I spent 27 years in
- 9:12Intercollegiate Athletics, specifically, track and field
- 9:15Auburn University University of Iowa, Texas Tech, and Universal
- 9:18Tennessee. So in 2018, I transitioned out
- 9:21of that into a new chapter in my life.
- 9:24Professionally personally with my wife and kids and it's been a
- 9:27great transition, but beauty of my job is, it keeps me coming to
- 9:31the convention and track me attend events, like this with
- 9:34you. Yeah, you know, Lane.
- 9:36Were all burn. I know for sure, in the Iowa
- 9:39space, for sure, but I was always impressed with just your
- 9:42breadth of knowledge and everywhere that you have been,
- 9:45you've always had success. I mean, that's just kind of a
- 9:47cool thing about your coaching and your coaching style, talk to
- 9:50us know. There's a lot of coaches that I
- 9:51don't know if you get this, I bet you do.
- 9:53As someone who used to coach myself, I get a lot of hate.
- 9:56What's it like on the other side?
- 9:58Still involved in track and field but you're not coaching.
- 10:01How was your experience with you?
- 10:02It's been wonderful. I mean, you know, I had an
- 10:05opportunity probably two or three.
- 10:06Years before that when I was at Iowa before I moved to Tennessee
- 10:09and it just wasn't a good time for me personally
- 10:12professionally, but when you boost treadmills called and
- 10:16probably the most difficult conversation I've ever had was
- 10:18with Beth at Tennessee and just letting her know that I was
- 10:21going a different direction, but she was incredible and
- 10:22supporting my decision. Yeah.
- 10:24And it's great on the other side, obviously, I miss a lot
- 10:27about track and field. The energy student-athletes
- 10:30building of relationships with families, but this provides me a
- 10:33lot more weekends at home, a lot more flexibility.
- 10:36I work remotely. So I find the coffee shop in
- 10:40Knoxville and I work when I'm not on the road and my my time
- 10:43away is greatly reduced which has been well received?
- 10:47Absolutely. So tell me more about boost
- 10:49treadmill, you know as you could probably imagine I'm not on the
- 10:51treadmill very much but I probably need a boost to get on
- 10:54it. Tell me what is Boost
- 10:55treadmills. When you guys do we are founders
- 10:58started alter G many, many years ago.
- 11:00And their goal was always to innovate and to improve
- 11:03functionality to improve affordability more.
- 11:06Importantly, I bought to alter jeez.
- 11:09When I was at at Iowa, they were eighty ninety thousand dollars a
- 11:12piece. So we've been able to improve
- 11:14the technology of a bring the price down.
- 11:16So we've been in business since 2018, you've got over 400
- 11:20machines out in Collegiate Athletics, just just this past
- 11:25outdoor championships in Eugene princes, there were nine
- 11:28trophies are awarded because there was a tie on the women's
- 11:30side. I think for fourth and boost
- 11:32customers and eight of those trophies at the recent NCAA
- 11:35cross country championships. Seven of the top 10 men's and
- 11:38women's teams are Boost customer.
- 11:40So we really come in and take in the space.
- 11:43We've got a lot of folks who came from a track-and-field
- 11:45background. And again, we offer a great
- 11:47products that's at a price point.
- 11:49Forty, two, forty five thousand dollars, and it's just a lot
- 11:52easier to manage when it comes to fitting it into your budget.
- 11:54I love what you said there. If you didn't use this word, I'm
- 11:57going to put the word in your mouth of authenticity regarding
- 12:00the, hey, there's a guy who did it as a coaching space with
- 12:03this, in that you're talking to coaches with this.
- 12:05You're not coming from just those Al's or engineering
- 12:07backgrounds. Like oh no, I was in the muck.
- 12:09I did it right where you were doing it.
- 12:11I love that authenticity from this check know and you know
- 12:13it's technology. My iPhone glitches from time to
- 12:16time and fix with the Sprint Store.
- 12:18I mean, it's technology. You're going to have an issue.
- 12:20I wish I could tell you something to tell you for the
- 12:22next 15 years and never going to have a single problem.
- 12:25And one of the things that we stand by in that in that
- 12:27commitment is that you have my cell phone number by Soldier
- 12:30machine, you call me I'm going to have our head technician in
- 12:32touch with you within within an hour or two.
- 12:35And we're going to we're going to diagnose.
- 12:36That's and more importantly, create a plan to get you back in
- 12:39Action because the machine never goes down at the most opportune
- 12:42time sir. And when it goes down, you all
- 12:45you want is to know that somebody's gonna put their
- 12:47attention and to getting it going again.
- 12:49And that's that's been our calling card.
- 12:50I think that's a big reason why we've been able to capture a
- 12:53large percentage of the police in the first place.
- 12:56So give me the 30-second version what is the difference between a
- 12:59boost treadmill and a regular when I go to the gym?
- 13:01Yes, I go to the gym. Shred me.
- 13:03What's the difference. Why, what's the 40,000?
- 13:06What's been We're basically using air pressure to create
- 13:10lift and reduce impact so I can put you on there and one percent
- 13:13increments kind of twenty percent of your body weight.
- 13:15I can run you on a treadmill at a speed up to 18 miles an hour
- 13:19at an incline up to 50%. So it's great in the
- 13:22rehabilitation space. It's great in recovery space in
- 13:25the in the sports performance space at 80 miles an hour,
- 13:28you're going to 52nd for the M Speed so it's an over speed
- 13:31training tool for a lot of folks and it's I have never probably
- 13:35why I joined boot. Beltran.
- 13:37You can imagine my wife's dismay when I came and had a
- 13:40conversation at the dinner table said, hey, I'd like to go to
- 13:43boost trade motion where leave a job at the University of
- 13:46Tennessee to sell treadmills and no no just no, just credit the
- 13:50treadmill salesman around the world, but it's just a product,
- 13:53I believe that the product that I know works, and it's a product
- 13:56that you don't have to sell it sells itself.
- 13:59And at that price point. It's, it's not like taking candy
- 14:02from a baby at Halloween time but it's been a much easier,
- 14:06sell weed. Got high schools and NAIA
- 14:08division, three division, 2 schools, that use our products
- 14:11much as the power 5 school selves.
- 14:13Well, I know for people that are here at the convention
- 14:15themselves, you have a boots, they chickened out for all of us
- 14:18online and for a future podcast stuff, where can they reach
- 14:20loose treadmill? Just go online boosts
- 14:22edmunds.com and you have any Sheen.
- 14:24Here we make we have a machine here so coaches can come by and
- 14:28check it out. Run on it.
- 14:29And you know we we've got our event tonight and you're coming
- 14:32too and it was just excited to be here and support the coaches.
- 14:36We know that The challenge, we know the grind, we all lived at,
- 14:39you know, 80 90 hours a week after week after week away from
- 14:42your families. There's a tremendous amount of
- 14:44sacrifice in it and if we can help in any way and outside of
- 14:47just selling you a product, that's what we're here for.
- 14:49Well it's a boost treadmills back on I love it.
- 14:52All right man we're in the neighborhood interview with a
- 14:54selfie here. Are you look much better than I
- 14:57do in that one man? Thanks for joining us.
- 14:58We appreciate you, man. All right, we'll get geared up
- 15:01here for whoever. Our next guest is you don't
- 15:03know. We didn't set this in a schedule
- 15:05so I don't know who's going to be next actually.
- 15:07Now I do know who's going to be next.
- 15:10So introduce yourself. And let's get started tonight.
- 15:12I'm Tim buyers on the UK, you realize director and I'm just
- 15:15here to, you know, let people know that t relays is back and
- 15:20it needs to be bad. Yeah, what a what?
- 15:22A tradition filled meet that the key.
- 15:25A you relays is it can? Unfortunately, it's a little
- 15:29triumphed, over a couple of others, right?
- 15:30I don't know that. Anybody has the history that KU
- 15:33has for the entire sport of track and field, right?
- 15:36You know, 1923 is when the relay started, we have 100 year
- 15:39anniversary this year and we're looking at Jim Ryan, Billy Mills
- 15:43coming back, share in the city. You know, you know a lot of
- 15:46local people come back. It's just a body history that's
- 15:49there at Kansas seems you know, the track and field and cross
- 15:53country programs in which there's only one Broken in some
- 15:56national championship in basketball.
- 15:58I think probably heard them and yeah, pretty good team.
- 16:00Yeah. And then cross country and track
- 16:02and field University campus Stanley, I love Stanley to death
- 16:06and does a great job and his staff that's been there for the
- 16:09coaching staff. For the longest time is always
- 16:11been really first class and just top, tell us a little bit about
- 16:14yourself. Tim, how did you get to the
- 16:15cave? Uh, you know, I'm a born and
- 16:16bred bullets, kid. I was born in North Memorial
- 16:19hospital. I'm so I've been going to Cannes
- 16:21relay since I was probably about six, seven years old, I each for
- 16:2528 years and then this positioned opened up.
- 16:28It been vacant for a few years and you know, to have the
- 16:33opportunity to bring the Kansas relays back to Lawrence kid is
- 16:37very, very emotional there. So I want to bring it back full
- 16:41force. I want people to know that this
- 16:44is something that's going to be around for another hundred
- 16:46years. So tell us, you know, we're
- 16:47tonight, we're going to have a lot of track coaches up.
- 16:50Be the bulk of it, of course, but what does a director of
- 16:53relays at KU to? What is I know the list is long,
- 16:57right? What are your top three, four,
- 16:58five priorities that you have to accomplish for the KV?
- 17:00You know this one is just get the trust back for you know,
- 17:04that you crack a field Community to tell them.
- 17:07Hey, this is its back. You know, there's rumors going
- 17:09around really good. Be there for one year, then
- 17:11we're going to stop. That's not true at all.
- 17:14I wouldn't take a job just for one year.
- 17:15It's been. I'm just harder.
- 17:16Yeah, I don't get yourself. Yeah.
- 17:35So, going back and forth. Between those two, is that
- 17:39student experience is the number one thing I want them to come, I
- 17:42want them to say that was a great relay meet and we want to
- 17:46come back next year or they want to put it on their calendar for
- 17:49the coaches for the next three years.
- 17:51So what are the dates this year? April 13th, through the 15th,
- 17:54April 13th, through the 15th. The hundred-year.
- 17:57Maybe you're going to ever try out the KU relays?
- 17:59Absolutely. Should this be the year?
- 18:00I think this should be the year. It's when were recording this,
- 18:03it's the middle of December. Is there still time to get in
- 18:05trees into the capsule? Okay, we're doing a top, like,
- 18:10entry list of the top 45 or come not going to put a little Mark
- 18:14on anything, because we found that a lot of times people end
- 18:16up, not entering because I'm not getting that, right?
- 18:19We're just going to do a top inner and week except all for by
- 18:22ones and four by fours for high schools.
- 18:25Even, you know, they can come and have a great experience.
- 18:28You see to wrap right around 8,000 out there and we can do
- 18:32more with what a facility by the way.
- 18:34Yeah, I mean, good God if you moment that's amazing.
- 18:37It's amazing. Well Tim to wrap it up I
- 18:39actually had a did something fun here.
- 18:41Okay so I have a hundred questions here. 1 through 100.

- 19:39kind of got to that point where I haven't been able to do my
- 19:43exercise and do things like I used to do Iron Man's legs and
- 19:46stuff. So now this is so I'm ready to

- 20:24That is excited to relase in the road kind of, right?
- 20:26So we had the Drake Relays and get the KU relays.
- 20:29I don't know if this next guest is gonna be a real, a
- 20:31participant or not hate. Someone asked me about my hat.
- 20:34I love this hat and I'm not a hat where it's a trek nerd that
- 20:38right. I love it.
- 20:39All the stares that I got in the airport were definitely worth it
- 20:42if you're one of the know more about the hat.
- 20:44So my friends at prep running nerd, PR EP argue and then ing
- 20:49nerd that they're on Twitter of course, because that's where I
- 20:52live, right? So, So check them out.
- 20:54These hands are boss, me and I love it and I hope you love it
- 20:56too. All right, hey let's get on with
- 20:58the next guest. Introduce yourself, you know,
- 21:07here's what I love about today's world you and I have no idea who
- 21:11each other is. We were introduced this morning
- 21:16through email and you know, that is really honestly.
- 21:19One of the reasons I started the podcast, it's one of the reasons
- 21:21that I'm on Twitter. Is meeting new people.
- 21:24I just stayed in my little bubble and champagne.
- 21:27I wouldn't meet anybody. So I just am so thankful that
- 21:30you're here that you took the step out again.
- 21:31Not knowing anything. And being your Jessica really,
- 21:35really cool. And says, a lot about you really
- 21:37does. Yes, great great part about
- 21:38conferences. Yes, getting to talk with
- 21:41like-minded people. Well, hopefully not like my do
- 21:44with me yours. Then I have to judge you,
- 21:46Jessica, you should be like me, but tell us the Jessica.
- 21:49How many years have you come to this convention?
- 21:51And what's what are you doing here?
- 21:52Yes. Is my first year at the.
- 21:55Yeah. So I coached track distance
- 21:58program when I was in college. I was in the Marine Corps for
- 22:03some time Ruth. Hello.
- 22:09So what are you looking forward to?
- 22:11You obviously, have you saw the schedule and said, okay, I like
- 22:15this. I like that.
- 22:15What are you looking forward to most this week?
- 22:21Parents coaches and just keep hearing about, and what makes
- 22:25their program successful? You know, I've got a lot of very
- 22:28talented athletes who still is they're looking for their next
- 22:31steps in college speaking with college coaches, hearing, you
- 22:35know what kinds of things they're looking for?
- 22:37Some of the times Runners need to be hitting this year.
- 22:41You said a kind of a fun word their networking and I say it's
- 22:45fun because it's what the things I love because we networking is
- 22:47about meeting new people, and giving value to people other
- 22:50people think of the The Dark Side of networking like, oh how
- 22:53many business cards can I collect?
- 22:54Or how many people can I find that will help get me a job?
- 22:57How are you? That's Hot Topic right now in
- 22:59Twitter. Specifically how are you almost
- 23:02a tackling networking at an event like this what's your kind
- 23:05of goals and you're blocking and tackling style right I think
- 23:09just being open just like this. Talking to some line here is my
- 23:16yeah, just trying to put myself out there on Twitter to go up
- 23:21and introduce sea games on name tags.
- 23:24And I wish everybody would wear name tags at all times.
- 23:33Just try to take in everything I can.
- 23:35Is there anybody that you really want to meet maybe some of it?
- 23:39Someone, I know. Maybe I can introduce you to
- 23:40someone. You like to know what.
- 23:41I want to get to know someone. So don't think that's the thing
- 23:46with live. I put you on the spot.
- 23:50Okay. All right.
- 23:51Well, if there is what we know is one things I love bringing
- 23:54people together. So so please leverage me and my
- 23:57network and our Network. Are you feeling?
- 24:00All right, Jessica. So we've got something fun here.
- 24:01I've got 100. Just kind of Of random wacky
- 24:05off-the-wall question so they're numbered 1 through 100.
- 24:07We're going to do two of them. What's the number you want to
- 24:09tackle first, there's lucky number 13, right?
- 24:13Don't get lost at night. Are you a camper?
- 24:17Well, I spent about five years on active duty to bring forth.
- 24:20So you want to call that keeping the absolute to some functions
- 24:24of can't be. Yeah.
- 24:24What was your specialty? Is a marine?
- 24:27I was a Communications. Did you do a podcast as a ring?
- 24:33I don't know how we had several Marines at work force, it takes,
- 24:38and it is, and it's a different breed and thank God for people
- 24:42like you. It's really needed and I can't
- 24:45say thank you enough honestly because I know I can't all right
- 24:49what else? Number 1 through 100 All the way
- 24:53down here. The bottom.
- 24:55You know where we're going. We don't need roads.
- 24:57You invented a time travel machine.
- 24:59How are you going to use it? I told you off the wall already
- 25:05know what's coming. I got 100 of these.
- 25:07All nights will see. You know, I think right now I
- 25:11would go back to who myself this summer when I took on the job.
- 25:16And I think there's a lot of things that I've learned this
- 25:18past season coaching that I could just in line, six months
- 25:20dish, What's the one thing that you?
- 25:25You know, now today in December that back in junior like home
- 25:28and just knowing things going to be okay you know it's a daunting
- 25:37role to take on and it's something that I took very
- 25:39seriously and I think at the end of the day you know what it
- 25:44worked out, I think we all need to hear that.
- 25:48Sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and get a
- 25:51lot of pressure from outside people kind of that deep.
- 25:54You know what? It's gonna be, okay?
- 25:56It's gonna work out the right way.
- 25:58Awesome. So what are you looking forward
- 26:00to most coming up here in the 2023 season track season coming
- 26:05up? I've got a lot of young Runners
- 26:09that are very eager and excited for the season.
- 26:11So I'm excited to see what they do and they're attracting is
- 26:15just kind of see where they go from there and their next steps
- 26:17on their college journey. I think the revenue also because
- 26:22I think you're awesome. You just so thankful that you're
- 26:25coaching track and field and cross country.
- 26:28It's immeasurable I don't say this lightly and I say it all
- 26:30the time, it's very, very true for me.
- 26:33It's immeasurable the positive impact that coaches me on young
- 26:36people today. You know, you're dealing in the
- 26:37high school. Sites are 14 18 year old, they
- 26:40need leadership. And what you provide for them is
- 26:43invaluable for the rest of the world.
- 26:45Not just track and field. We're literally the entire rest
- 26:47of the world just be. So thank you so much for being
- 26:48the coach. We're going to do the selfie
- 26:50first. Oh no we gotta get that selfie
- 26:52in. All right Jessica You so much
- 26:54for coming out. I don't know that I said, thank
- 26:59you enough for her being a marine because that's a big
- 27:03deal. Aaron, you are know what her
- 27:04name and email is they text me or hit me up on Twitter at Mike
- 27:08Cunningham or text me to 1789 830 38 and I'll make sure we get
- 27:14Jessica's name and email over to you here in, okay?
- 27:18All right, you're not see buddy. You don't know what's going on.
- 27:20Let's go ahead and reduce ourselves Market.
- 27:28That's get to Council Bluffs. Iowa, actually grew up after you
- 27:33come out, so I need to visit. Yes, because I need to visit for
- 27:41one year, but so before Guild, and after my coaching career, I
- 27:47actually was a professional poker player.
- 27:49And so, I started back then, and still goes to today, I collect a
- 27:53poker, chip everywhere that I play poker, like, I'm all framed
- 27:55up in the house number 56 at 376 use this past weekend.
- 28:01And I know Council. Bluffs has two casinos.
- 28:02I have been to, I got like little list of where I need to
- 28:04go. So I need to get out of several.
- 28:07Yeah, one of those. That just one out there.
- 28:09Yeah. That part's fun and then now
- 28:29being junior college is helping the sophomores.
- 28:32Find homes. Yeah, we spoke briefly to
- 28:38Twitter than the former junior college coach.
- 28:40Also coached at, you know, high school and power 5, and the
- 28:44Junior College route to me is still one of the most precious
- 28:47things. Like I love going to junior
- 28:49college national meet, it's just a different breed, not only
- 28:52athletes but also coaches you know High School coaches, work
- 28:55their tail off to get their kids recruited.
- 28:57College coaches through your college coaches work their tail
- 29:00off to recruit kids to the program.
- 29:02You're doing both ends but this is the proverbial light candles
- 29:05at both ends are sure. It's it's very misunderstand
- 29:09levels. You know I think you have
- 29:14everything from. Oh yeah.
- 29:21Oh yeah. It's pretty awesome.
- 29:30So it's misunderstood people really, really look into it.
- 29:36This is how to get to do some really, really good things in
- 29:40the future wife and I will Western has done it at a high
- 29:43level for a long time. You know, all the way up there
- 29:46and Western, Iowa, don't get it twisted.
- 29:47There's a lot of your neck of the woods.
- 29:50What are you most looking forward to 2020?
- 30:27It's hard to do that because we have a winner team winners.
- 30:40Of course. It's like there's only one
- 30:43person that gets the last year. We're right, and or force on the
- 30:58weak side for two. If you can keep that rolling, I
- 31:04love him and well, you're a winner today because you get to
- 31:06play our fun little question game. 2 1 through 100?
- 31:10You get to pick the number 78. All right, we're in the 70s or
- 31:13significance about 78. I was born in Germany.
- 31:16I love it. You're two years younger than
- 31:17me, you young whippersnapper. All right, real or fake.
- 31:20What's your favorite WWE? Wrestler of all time?
- 31:24And I guess I should have wrote WWE because it could be.
- 31:29Yeah, right. This is the place this at one
- 32:27time of year. You have the fittest hotel in
- 32:29the country. We went to, we went worked out
- 32:32this morning and you won't have that many people in that
- 32:35business. And what time did you work out?
- 32:37I went in by sending her. Yeah, I'm the 5:00 crew.
- 32:40There is all the coaches that were in there and there weren't
- 32:43many the diehards. Now, that's too early.
- 32:46The networking Wednesday, I'll be in there again at around 5.
- 32:50A.m. I want to see you.
- 32:52I might need a spotter. I'm doing the Ten sets of ten
- 32:56incline dumbbell right now as it's been a little tough.
- 32:58All right, man. All right, let's get our Sophie
- 32:59in here, brother, am preciate you being here on the show.
- 33:03Thanks for trusting me here in the live version.
- 33:04Thanks, Bob. Hey, it's 5:30.
- 33:08It's 5:30 we still got an hour and a half at least going on
- 33:12here on the live podcast. So, we're going to see who our
- 33:14next guest. Is there being a little shy?
- 33:17I wish, you know, I would turn around.
- 33:18I'm gonna give a little picture and show you what's going on
- 33:21right here at the live recording, the Alex connections
- 33:25podcast. I'm gonna have this next guest
- 33:28introduce himself, but he doesn't need any introduction at
- 33:32all. Please introduce yourself my
- 33:33friend - hey everyone my name is Richard heene the fighting
- 33:41Hornets. I love it cheering just a little
- 33:44bit so we can hear you man. But you, thanks for being here,
- 33:48you know, you and I have certainly a business
- 33:51relationship and extremely extremely thankful for.
- 33:54But throughout that and for the past few years, we've actually
- 33:58struck up quite a personal relationship.
- 34:00And that doesn't happen. Very often in business and
- 34:03things like that, so you're just some of them.
- 34:04So like it's just really cool to go.
- 34:06That's how people live right here now.
- 34:08How much I love you, I adore you and your family and just just so
- 34:12grateful for you in improving. The feeling is mutual, you know,
- 34:16if it's just because it started two years ago and it's just
- 34:23grown over the years. Just simple phone calls checking
- 34:26in and it's like my brother from another one zipper.
- 34:30So Richie tell us how many years have you come here to the
- 34:33commissioner has been I know I've built a than ever since.
- 34:38I became head coach. Missouri, 2001 whenever the
- 34:43existing of is audited. Yeah.
- 34:48Make the middle a lot of good people and build a lot of great
- 34:52relationships being here and learned a lot of things.
- 34:55And where are you? Is there something you're
- 34:56looking forward to the most this week whether it's a speaker or a
- 35:00meeting or all the fame, there's anything like you're like man,
- 35:03there's something I'm definitely not going to miss the sides
- 35:06being here on the live. Taping of the guilt fixes for
- 35:08this is the biggest thing else. Being around the positive energy
- 35:35Hall of Fame. Always being constant is just to
- 35:38see people who have laid the path.
- 35:41So many people in the sport just to see them be honored on that
- 35:45night rightfully so yeah and this year's crew every year Is
- 35:48like the, who's who but I mean this year another just amazing
- 35:52set of just just to deserve it and then in women that are going
- 35:55into the Hall of Fame, it really is quite amazing.
- 35:58Alright, my friend, we're gonna play a little fun, little one,
- 36:00300 game. I got 100, just random questions
- 36:02and trust me. They've been random.
- 36:04You get to pick the number though. 1 through 100.
- 36:10I'm ready. Let's go with the number one.
- 36:12Number one, 30 minutes or less. What topping is never going on
- 36:17your pizza. Probably Black Ops 2 Call.
- 36:23Did you like it in taco dip? Do not know like all of them
- 36:26all. Okay, all right.
- 36:28One more. Okay, let's go with 45.
- 36:31Is that the number of championship rings?
- 36:33You have the time? That is the greatest Flex that
- 36:39anybody will have here tonight. I'm gonna go 55 and celebration
- 36:42and here's the thing. Next year, we're gonna have to
- 36:44do 56 or 57. You just keep adding them on my
- 36:46friend, you don't share your not a good share with Team
- 36:49Championships, not at all. All right.
- 36:52Well, you must like food, 155. Let's go to the kitchen.
- 36:55You've got to make one meal to save your life.
- 36:59What is it? What are you doing?
- 37:10You got a smoker, you know, what do you got?
- 37:15Is your favorite player like a barbecue, or a pinot and what
- 37:18your fingers will Richie, something
- 37:30that we're doing tonight, as well, only Force like people and
- 37:32I blew it with Blake Bolden by the way earlier today is any
- 37:36Feel connections, Alum. So you were on the podcast.
- 37:40We were one of my first people on the podcast.
- 37:42Thank you for that trust my friend, and if you haven't
- 37:45checked it out, just go in your favorite podcast app or on
- 37:48YouTube, Just Google Richie Bean.
- 37:50Gill Athletics, it'll pop right up until they don't make your
- 37:53life better. Listen to a story.
- 37:54His story matters and it is a doozy trust me.
- 37:57But because I got to grill. You for about two hours, you get
- 38:00to put the script tonight. And ask me one question, I'm
- 38:04putting myself out there. I'm not.
- 38:06I don't want to Give me time to think.
- 38:07So I need to we need to get a question, get an excellent
- 38:09question. One question, there's nothing.
- 38:10You know, there's no bleep button and no edits.
- 38:11So don't say anything that your mom would be mad at.
- 38:14What point raised me right? I want to know you know that the
- 38:25answer might have been different than years ago but about maybe
- 38:28five, six seven. Think about 10 years ago
- 38:30actually, you know, my life changed when I looked at my job
- 38:33here at uofl etics being from a To a servant of coaches that
- 38:39really flip the switch of like, hey, you know what?
- 38:42When I stop thinking that, hey, every piece of my equipment is
- 38:45for every coach. It's, it's great to have
- 38:48choices. That's why we had different car
- 38:49companies, Etc. We don't always have the
- 38:51solution for everybody, but for those people that we do have the
- 38:55solution for instead of saying he buys, okay.
- 38:57Now let's have a conversation. Great.
- 38:59And, you know, you know, I've consulted on your facility,
- 39:00which I'm so happy for you couldn't staff in that was in
- 39:04service facility. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:06That is Because it is an amazing facility.
- 39:09When we talk, we had a budget to keep it.
- 39:12So we with lower featured of benefits, on some things, and
- 39:15other things was like, hey, no, no.
- 39:16My program is built on X, so we're going to go with do it
- 39:18higher over here, we did a great design for the game board, we
- 39:21just serve. That's really what it was all
- 39:22about and that is that drives me every day is to get up these
- 39:27guys and gals that are out here and sit in this seat.
- 39:29Right here. Do something that is more
- 39:31valuable than anything out there in my world.
- 39:34They helped 14 to 18. Rolls 18 to 22 year olds become
- 39:39better, human beings. That's better for our world, not
- 39:42just track and field. And so, how do I help that coach
- 39:45get better and make more money for his family?
- 39:47His passion, how do I help this coach go and work in a job where
- 39:50they can be there with their spouses cetera?
- 39:52That's my passion that drives me every single day.
- 39:54I wake up. So I want to say something to
- 39:56you. I we are here lat and I'm not
- 39:58just saying it in the process of getting our tractor and needing
- 40:03a overall on equipment when he spoke about The budget, he
- 40:07understood the challenges, we had in getting things done, but
- 40:11that was no, oh, there's a big Universal.
- 40:14We got to do this and got to do that.
- 40:16The same customer service, the same detail and everything.
- 40:20I give this man, Kudos his staff.
- 40:23Who knows? They were excellent in the
- 40:25process of us, choosing either from his designs are for
- 40:29customizing. I heard those customers mask,
- 40:32making sure that the delivery was on time.
- 40:36Out there, I couldn't ask for any better customer service and
- 40:40those people who have their customer service is the most
- 40:43part. And I can honestly, say not
- 40:46because this is my friend, but because Gil did good business
- 40:51and put customer service at the top, I stand on the shoulders of
- 40:54great people, our customer service team, we talked about
- 40:58authenticity earlier tonight. Former coaches from where
- 41:00athletes do I do this much of the whole thing?
- 41:03There's a whole crew that does a lot more.
- 41:05And that means the, World for you to say that this is so much.
- 41:08Let's get selfie to in this camera turned off.
- 41:13All right. Richard, thank you so much, man.
- 41:15Appreciate you and go check out his podcast.
- 41:18Go check them out. At bitchy Veen.
- 41:19Go on your podcast app or YouTube to search his name and
- 41:23it's it's heartfelt. We want it.
- 41:25We got into it, Go horns. Thanks, all right.
- 41:29Hey, what am I just dear time? All time friends was Richie be
- 41:34man, I just love it. What?
- 41:35A great great person. I can't wait to see who the next
- 41:37person is. We got another Alum.
- 41:40So buckle up, we're going to get another question.
- 41:43Right back here at at your humble host.
- 41:45Ian. All right.
- 41:47I've been working out. So introduce yourself to the
- 41:50crowd here. Greg Smith head coach
- 41:53cross-country, track and field University of Bridgeport.
- 41:56So brand new program. Mike, you're missing all the
- 41:57fun. This is where the fun is out
- 41:59front here, talking to each other.
- 42:01You know, I feel bad. I told you I was gonna be here
- 42:03like 455 so, Gary Aldridge solve my sergeant and you stop and
- 42:07we'll talk you know what? Those are two good people so
- 42:09I'll allow that all about it. Yeah it's really hard to be
- 42:12focused. I hear on our audience and our
- 42:14guest. Yeah.
- 42:15And all these amazing people that I'm just super excited.
- 42:17We said we're going to go five to seven and I made a promise to
- 42:19myself at seven PM. People are still here.
- 42:21I'm still here. We're gonna roll with it and he
- 42:23forgot my, yeah. So tell me, what are you doing
- 42:25here at the convention? What are you looking forward to
- 42:27the most here? This week for me thing, I
- 42:29enjoyed the movie still is interacting with the coaches and
- 42:32doing things like that. I have committee meetings.
- 42:35Starting a brand new defense program.
- 42:36He straps just get the word out there.
- 42:38And you know, I actually enjoyed the meetings because that's
- 42:42where we kind of Lower score, right?
- 42:44More better support. And well, I like the symposiums
- 42:47and things like that. Just interacting with the other
- 42:50coaches. I mean, you learn a lot more,
- 42:51you see how everybody's doing? And, you know, like, you know,
- 42:54if you're a track coach or you do with the score your fanatical
- 42:57about, right? So it's good to be your Trek
- 43:00nerd about it. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 43:02So it's good to just meet other people with the same mindset.
- 43:06So tell us a little bit now and we got into this.
- 43:08So here we have another Alum of the build connections podcast so
- 43:11you just got to Google his name would be.
- 43:13Left buttocks and the podcast, those pop-up or the YouTube and
- 43:16we got into this but I was just kind of a 30-second version of
- 43:18starting a new program from scratch because that just like I
- 43:21feel like that's what I would have really enjoyed in the
- 43:23coaching you say that and you doing.
- 43:27No. It's it's.
- 43:28It is excited and I feel privileged and I'm the first,
- 43:31the only first ever coached in universities everything.
- 43:34That's right. So it's exciting thing to do.
- 43:37It's a lot of recruiting just getting the word out there.
- 43:39You know, I think you saw like the news For News 12
- 43:43Connecticut. Yeah.
- 43:44So talking about the program and the university has bought in and
- 43:48they've been very supportive of it so it's exciting.
- 43:51I get to build it in my locker. Yeah, I love the vision to
- 43:55track. If you are joining a Division, I
- 43:56coach just because I can do both things so I can get those higher
- 44:01end athletes. That would love to get to USA's
- 44:02or the trials things like that. Like soak it was other athletes.
- 44:05It just with the opportunity to improve to reach their potential
- 44:09so much. Well, I have no doubt that
- 44:10they've been improved in the evening just like talking.
- 44:13With you and get to know you better.
- 44:14All right, we have a little fun tonight.
- 44:16So we've got 100, random questions, and you get to pick
- 44:19the number 100. You want 100 there?
- 44:23Now, 200 5454 as well. So we already had 154 is my old
- 44:26football numbers, huh? Let's go what's your hobby, man?
- 44:33You can't say, I make the rules. Done various things.
- 44:45I've tried to be staying up once in a while checking so you can't
- 44:49say that without you gotta give us a joke, it's not a joke, like
- 44:54a punchline joke, there's got to be like people, their faces will
- 44:58turn red. It's I hope.
- 45:43Awesome almost. It makes it easier to digest and
- 45:46then you have the rest of the day to treat them as awful to
- 45:49us. So for me, nothing is
- 45:52off-limits. Current economy and things like
- 45:54that. So if you need to get personal,
- 45:56if you need to get a little bit wrong, little bit rough.
- 45:58That's a great thing to do. So I love comedy, even if it's
- 46:02something that like being, I'm a big animal rights and the
- 46:04relevance. But if I get into a club in the
- 46:07city, makes a really funny animal cruelty.
- 46:09Do I'm going to laugh because I know that's something I really
- 46:12care about you. And they're making me laugh.
- 46:14I got it. I don't know if that question
- 46:16comes up with anybody else would like to get that same hobby?
- 46:18That's, that's really cool. It's something.
- 46:20I look like I said, I any time something pops in my head, like
- 46:23things are funny idea. I take out my phone and it's
- 46:25program and I catch myself. All right, so we're doing it.
- 46:30Only Gil efforts connections, alums, get to do.
- 46:32This is so you were gracious. You were awesome on the podcast,
- 46:36so thankful that you would join us on that podcast.
- 46:38And I grilled you for close to two hours, right?
- 46:40You know, the experience writing probably went home and cried a
- 46:42little bit. Got to, you know, fuck yourself,
- 46:45back up to get back on that horse.
- 46:47Now you get to flip it. You get to ask me one question,
- 46:50okay, what do you miss most about Coach?
- 46:53Hmm, that's a prank question, you know, I think the thing that
- 46:57I miss the most is there's some freedom and going outside at
- 47:012:00 every day to work with young people.
- 47:03There's just something about not being an office all the time.
- 47:06And I think that's why I like to travel for, for my profession,
- 47:09here at Delta X because I'm out of the office at that point, but
- 47:12there was something about I'll just be in the toes in the sand
- 47:14pit. Helping people work on the
- 47:15lounge on house, for instance hurdles that's probably what I
- 47:18miss the most young people for sure.
- 47:20Well I mean if you're doing a great thing here, I we talked
- 47:22about it to another handful of the coaches.
- 47:23As I was walking up and they said where you had that's it'll
- 47:26actually good told. Mike, I would go and do the
- 47:27podcast with them and everybody said the same thing.
- 47:29It's a great thing you're doing because for me I don't like to
- 47:33set up a podcast. Sometimes people take citizen as
- 47:35intelligence where they think, if I could be really critical
- 47:38right coach. He's our athletes and things
- 47:40like that. It makes me sound smarter
- 47:42whereas your hi. In sport, you're highlighting
- 47:44the coaches which I think is a great thing.
- 47:45Yeah. Well it's all about uplifting
- 47:47around and what you do because what you do is in measurable for
- 47:49our young people and you can do it while you're dressed like
- 47:51Jake from State Farm. So I actually went with my pet
- 47:55Henry. That's yes.
- 47:57Well yeah, that's kind of helped myself and I was in my workout
- 48:00clothes and he was like, you look like you're going for a run
- 48:02and was a goof. You don't know me.
- 48:33It's one of the more unique mascots Hornet life forever, you
- 48:36know. Yeah.
- 48:37I forget the chance but I'm sure and change the last 20-something
- 48:40years. Let's get herself.
- 48:41A man, appreciate you so much for being.
- 48:43So they preach again. Oh man.
- 48:47Hey, I love when there's Golf and explanations on and there's
- 48:49one standing right in front of me.
- 48:50That did the get in here, you just gotta push your way to the
- 48:52front. Just push away.
- 48:54You just elbow, just elbow. But, hey, here we go.
- 48:57Another yellow Phoenix connections, Alum.
- 49:00I'm allowing everybody else to introduce themselves.
- 49:02Instead of me doing so, introduce yourself to the crowd
- 49:05here today, and you got to speak up a little bit, you know, it's
- 49:12loud here. I mean, everything that you're
- 49:14hearing right now, this is what's going on all around us.
- 49:17It's quite amazing. When you put a bunch of coaches
- 49:19together and how much we'll we'll chat along here.
- 49:22So spec, tell me how many years have you been coming to the
- 49:26mention? And where are you most looking
- 49:27forward to this week here. At this sir, I'm proud to say
- 49:30that into every convention. Great job.
- 49:40Shout out to Sam seems and shout out to Sam's.
- 49:43Ruth is love Sam, but he ain't doing this all by himself.
- 49:46He's got a great amazing staff that supports us 365 days a
- 49:50year. Yeah.
- 49:50Sorry that I just want to give a shout-out.
- 49:53It's really made this such a professional everything, from
- 49:58mauermann, of course. Wonderful.
- 50:03Symposiums getting you guys hear that.
- 50:06You just re out here. Yes, there's obviously the
- 50:10fellowship catching Last year you spoke in the supposing.
- 50:16You were a teacher you teaching this year or yeah, I've done it.
- 50:19The last two years this year to be your ability Among Us.
- 50:24Somebody else do it. I enjoy attending those and a
- 50:29lot of my friends are going to be presenting so I was like
- 50:32yeah. So if you could only come up
- 50:35with some spot you can only go to one thing.
- 50:38Not just Symposium one thing all of paint thinner, but our men,
- 50:41see your buddy speak, go to a committee meeting.
- 50:43If you can only do one thing this week, what would it be?
- 50:46Actually, the coaches off a big reason for that is a lot of my
- 50:52mentors, a lot of my friends, a lot of my colleagues.
- 50:56Groups are all in it, and it's really an amazing group.
- 51:01I mean, they're amazing every year.
- 51:02But this year, as I read through the list, I'm like, oh my gosh.
- 51:05Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.
- 51:06Like, they're amazing. That's great.
- 51:10That they have an opportunity to be recognized and celebrated,
- 51:16some of them have been retired and it's past due, right?
- 51:20And then there's a lot of them that are still Enterprise.
- 51:28Really recognized. Guys that put so much of this
- 51:33one. Yeah, we're standing on their
- 51:36shoulders as coaches today and what they did in that word we're
- 51:39building it. So future coaches can stand on
- 51:41these big old shoulders right here.
- 51:43All right, mr. Speaker here, we've got 100
- 51:45questions, just kind of random fun questions.
- 51:46You get to pick the number one through 144.
- 51:50What's the significance of 44? One of my favorite didn't want
- 51:54to go forward. All right.
- 51:56Well this is a good one. It's Space.
- 51:58Invaders time. What's your favorite video game?
- 52:00Of all time. Let's see.
- 52:03It shows you how long? Hold on.
- 52:04Don't say pong. I've got to say that I can still
- 52:07remember when Palm Normal sleep at all classic as a classic 80s
- 52:13game and that's hot. The video game.
- 52:17Did you have you guys purchase the Nintendo switch?
- 52:21I don't have anything like this. So they've got a pacman on the
- 52:23air where you play against 99 other people in the world.
- 52:26Okay, it's awesome. You got to check it out.
- 52:28Was when we first got our switch it was addicted.
- 52:31Now I'm addicted to court. Okay trigger.
- 52:33So another thing that we're doing and this is exclusive,
- 52:36you're in a small Club here is any your left buttocks
- 52:39connections? Alums that are on the live
- 52:41podcast here. Tonight looks like grilled you
- 52:43for a couple of hours Long process to get to your whole
- 52:47story. It was very probably had to take
- 52:50a nap. I'm sure after that.
- 52:52So I'm going to let you put the script and you get to ask me one
- 52:55question. Okay we're going to go back to
- 52:57our days of all state. Oh yes I remember at all state
- 53:03you had a collection of reptiles.
- 53:07Yeah would you like to share with everybody?
- 53:10Yeah, you know, I don't have them now because I married my
- 53:14wife for Evening. But yes, I had I've always I
- 53:18grew up a huge snake, man. Like I moved a lot in
- 53:21everywhere. That I would move into the new
- 53:23school. The first thing I would do is go
- 53:24to the library and read all the snake - and that was just this
- 53:27before the internet, you remember those days.
- 53:30So I would read them, all right? And so when I finally got to
- 53:32college and I was finally able to get my own reptile, I got a
- 53:35ball python all my snakes, by the way, we're all named after
- 53:38herders. Who do you think skeet skeet?
- 53:41Very first one thing exactly the all-time now I'd have a great
- 53:45Halloween. A in a tray.
- 53:46Those kind of me Ali as well with me.
- 53:49I had a ball python, and then when I was coaching Junior
- 53:52College, I just got so lucky in Kansas.
- 53:54They had a big reptile, big snake collection that they were
- 53:57peering down to only snakes that were native to Kansas all those
- 54:01things are going to get rid of. They knew all the snake guy so I
- 54:04got a pink foot red tail boa. I got a little one foot mrs.
- 54:09Massasauga rattlesnake I came here with others but really the,
- 54:13I love my snakes. I really did.
- 54:14They were all doing. At the rattlesnake, the eight
- 54:17footer had a bad attitude so you can find him either.
- 54:19So I had a great time and now my wife she did say, she'd divorce
- 54:24me, but I also kind of thought about calling her Bluff.
- 54:27It's like well, if I get a stick, what you can do, we gonna
- 54:29pick it up and get rid of it? Yeah, they'll just be there.
- 54:31So, what we did? We got this steal of a deal of
- 54:34Three Sixty gallon fish tank is there is a tank of fish called
- 54:39the African growth fish and it looks just like a snake.
- 54:43It has two little things up from its long thick.
- 54:45They look just like snakes its scratch.
- 54:48My snakes. Which I'm good.
- 54:49I'm really good. Let's get question, but I love
- 54:51that. All right, my friend.
- 54:52Let's take our self here today. Thank you again for being on the
- 54:55live show, man. Appreciate you very much, thank
- 54:57you. Oh man Jim Sprecher we work
- 55:01together at Ball State University.
- 55:03He was the head men's coach. It was a woman's assistant coach
- 55:06under the great Sioux Parks over there and just really had just
- 55:09an all-time blast there with lots of great alumni and great
- 55:13times that we have therein. Track and field and you know I
- 55:17don't plan this but we're going to have our third Gila thetax
- 55:20connections. Podcast, alum in a row please
- 55:23introduce yourself Sir. Charles Ryan director track and
- 55:26field at San Jose State University.
- 55:28See, I appreciate you speaking up and didn't like some of them
- 55:31are. Yeah.
- 55:32You got some experience with that.
- 55:33We we do this on occasion every now and so let's talk about that
- 55:36a little bit. Yeah, very impress.
- 55:38Your no G coz you gotta get a new guy.
- 55:40Now with the governor for Originals.
- 55:45I'm so impressed. Rest with because, you know, I
- 55:47have experienced with this. It's real easy actually, it's
- 55:50hard but it's easy to start a show.
- 55:52Yes, it's extremely hard to be going three years on your is
- 55:57shocked as I am that. We are still doing this thing.
- 56:00You know, we started Athletics LLC, you know, during the
- 56:03pandemic when people were looking for something to connect
- 56:06to and honestly we're a little bored and going a little
- 56:08stir-crazy with, you know, all this free time and, you know, it
- 56:12snowballed into something that the people seem to care about
- 56:14him. Reinstating and we enjoy doing
- 56:17it. So as long as they're still
- 56:19interest, we're going to keep this train rolling.
- 56:20We haven't missed the show in three years.
- 56:22That is also impressive because for one of the consistency is
- 56:25extremely hard in its weekly, it's not like you do this month.
- 56:28Oh yeah, everyone you were hardly and then you think about
- 56:30the people that are involved. So Charles Ryan is here.
- 56:33By the way, new head coach director, try to feel the San
- 56:36Jose sleeping State University, which is doing really cool
- 56:39things. And really good for our sport,
- 56:41by the way, I appreciate San Jose.
- 56:43So Charles is on there. We're such to from TCU my
- 56:47Calaway. Do I really have to tell you
- 56:49where he's from Florida and increase health ins?
- 56:52I don't know what he's doing there but now they're yeah the
- 56:55executive producer as oh my gosh one more time but you got to
- 57:01check them out on every Friday night on YouTubes right here
- 57:04where you are right now on YouTube live.
- 57:06Check it out every Friday when were us is on point.
- 57:15Percent of the time. It doesn't best friend is right?
- 57:17It's amazing. So, they have a video component,
- 57:20which they do an amazing job, great intro, and outro by the
- 57:23Great lead on chiku. I'm gonna surprise coming up in
- 57:252023. Yeah.
- 57:27Oh yeah, yeah. I like it.
- 57:29They do an amazing job. And then, we're so gracious.
- 57:32So humble, they allow us to take the audio version, so we just
- 57:36rip the audio from it. And we run it about two weeks
- 57:38later for people who don't watch on YouTube, but it's still to
- 57:41use. There's so much valuable
- 57:42information. You can kicked out you guys like
- 57:44how do I expand? Like you know, how do I make
- 57:47more people be able to listen to the topics that you guys talked?
- 57:49No, it's been really fun and we've always you know, most of
- 57:52the topics that we tackle. You know, we discussed amongst
- 57:55ourselves and figure out you know what we want to talk about
- 57:58but we take you know, suggestions from the audience
- 58:00and you know send us DM's Instagram messages and all that
- 58:04stuff. So it's really, you know, it's
- 58:07us on the show but we try to make it like it's about, you
- 58:09know, the community is like a community that cares about our
- 58:12sport. So if you got questions, if
- 58:14you've got thoughts and there's things Honestly, get it to send
- 58:16us. And as always, we'll do it in
- 58:18the easiest way to do that. They don't know how to get ahold
- 58:19of these guys. Just go to the YouTube channel.
- 58:22Absolutely. There in the comments.
- 58:23Register doesn't great job of reading those three.
- 58:25Yes, I've heard you come in about the comments.
- 58:27Oh yeah they actually do read them.
- 58:28That's another cool thing. As far as that no end in sight,
- 58:32there's no talk about oh no, there was breaking up the band.
- 58:34Know there's no end in sight. Nothing.
- 58:36Nobody has been offered any you Sensation to go off and do their
- 58:39own snow or anything like that. So I'm shocked.
- 58:42It's it's, it's know. We all really, really enjoy it.
- 58:46And, you know, we were the governor AKA cream.
- 58:49Treat Thompson had to replace me one day because my son was born
- 58:54and so he did a great job. They're like, well, we just need
- 58:58to keep him in there. So it went from four to five and
- 59:00it's been that way and it's going to stay that with me.
- 59:02Like we all really enjoyed doing.
- 59:03We have moved mountains and all kind of things to get the show.
- 59:07Done weekly at one point. We were in four different time
- 59:10zones throughout throughout the world.
- 59:11That was fun. That was an interesting during
- 59:13the Olympics. I was crazy.
- 59:18The consistency. You guys had a special shout-out
- 59:20to Mouse. Yes, through the Olympics.
- 59:23So over there through the Olympics, the World
- 59:25Championships, time zones. Yep.
- 59:28Super tired. Oh, he was a little responsible
- 59:30for things. Yeah, and you never miss the
- 59:32show and that's what I love about what you guys are doing
- 59:35their. You're showing a different part,
- 59:37a part that some people think they Be involved like, oh,
- 59:39that's that's right. Big boy stuff or whatever over
- 59:41there, right? I love that.
- 59:42You kind of this kind of pull that curtain back and like, Hey
- 59:44we're going to bare it all good and bad.
- 59:45We're going to talk about it all.
- 59:46Yeah. There's really no, there's no
- 59:49track and field or other any other subject for that matter
- 59:51that it's off-limits. We don't really run for many
- 59:53everything. We try to keep things, you know,
- 59:55current and up-to-date with whatever is going on within the
- 59:57culture and the sport. And you know, like I said people
- 1:00:00seem to enjoy it so as long as there's an audience for it will
- 1:00:04keep rocking it out. It's a great point.
- 1:00:05So we didn't talk about this but I do want to talk about just A
- 1:00:08little bit tell us about how you enjoying not being a head coach
- 1:00:12because you've done that. I uh, I think the program that
- 1:00:15you took over is of such historical significance.
- 1:00:18It's a different head coaching job.
- 1:00:20How has it been? And how are you enjoying it
- 1:00:22struggles? I'm having a ball with it.
- 1:00:24You know, a lot of people thought that, you know, the
- 1:00:27resurrection of Speed City and all that other stuff, given
- 1:00:30historical context and then cancel the program and what it's
- 1:00:33been in the 2010's on, his was an impossible job.
- 1:00:36I never really saw it that way. I saw it as a huge opportunity.
- 1:00:38To Annie and I'm from the Bay Area.
- 1:00:40So it's a little bit, you know, more special to me.
- 1:00:44I'm honored to be in the chair. I'm having a ball doing it.
- 1:00:46We have an incredible year, one recruiting class, we set some
- 1:00:50program records last year. We sent six kids to Regionals.
- 1:00:52We're trying to Triple that you know up for this upcoming year.
- 1:00:56We're just trying to be relevant at on the national level.
- 1:00:59Because if you're going to do this job this way, that's the
- 1:01:02only way it's going to play. You don't have a fantastic
- 1:01:06staff. I was able to get as I've said
- 1:01:08before. Or my number-one draft, it's it
- 1:01:10at every at every position, Ernie TJ, and Charmaine are
- 1:01:13absolutely killing it for me. Great, and we're having well,
- 1:01:17it's mostly the California Central team.
- 1:01:19It's going to stay that way. But we do recruit all over the
- 1:01:22world and obviously out of state, it's coming together
- 1:01:25really nicely. And if the team's by 85%
- 1:01:27freshman right now. So if the babies can run like
- 1:01:30adults, we all know how that goes.
- 1:01:32We're gonna have a lot of noise to make this year, if they can
- 1:01:35grow up fast. So we're having a compliment, I
- 1:01:37can give you They got the right personality.
- 1:01:40Well, I appreciate it. Just seemed what you've done in
- 1:01:41the first year, and as you now evolved into the second year,
- 1:01:45they do those to the administration for for both the
- 1:01:48right lever here and give it our best Administration I've ever
- 1:01:50worked for Jeff. Bonilla and his leadership team
- 1:01:52are phenomena from compliance all the way down.
- 1:01:55They literally never told me no for anything.
- 1:01:58I've asked and they find answers, they find Solutions
- 1:02:01when you're working for Solutions, based people get a
- 1:02:04lot of things accomplished. Absolutely, well, like I
- 1:02:06mentioned, don't miss it. Chuck's, what's not?
- 1:02:38Yeah, so we're allowing only alums like grilled you for a
- 1:02:42good two hours. It was during Pope, I'm a union
- 1:02:45Hartman. It was to flip the script
- 1:02:47tonight. You get to ask me one question
- 1:02:49only. We first one question.
- 1:02:51No holds bar. There's a metal button or
- 1:02:53anything else? Oh no, I'm honestly, I would
- 1:02:56like to know as a person who jumped into this podcast face
- 1:03:00and obviously have crushed it. What's that experience like been
- 1:03:04for you, like, what has been the best part of to me?
- 1:03:07I see what you do as a Back to the sports and what's been the
- 1:03:10best piece of this for you? Yeah, I did something that's
- 1:03:12happened. That I didn't, I wasn't aware.
- 1:03:15That would happen is, you know, interview these coaches of all
- 1:03:18different levels, right? So from the vision One,
- 1:03:20Professional high school club, that we just call the gamut
- 1:03:23guys, gals black, white asian all around, right, and I knew
- 1:03:28focusing on their Journey would be pretty cool to have that.
- 1:03:30Go to this one place. Why'd they go to this one place?
- 1:03:32What mentors poured into them? I did not expect that as a on
- 1:03:37the business side of Track-and-field manufacturer
- 1:03:40that I would get any much or any like things that would help me
- 1:03:45and there were a couple of ones. And I tell you one that really
- 1:03:48stuck out early is when I interviewed Brooks Johnson.
- 1:03:51I'm sure in which was very nerve-racking for me because
- 1:03:55there's several reasons. It was nerve-wracking when we
- 1:03:57did it as well. Yeah, well shout out to Brooks.
- 1:04:01Brooks is an interesting interview for sure.
- 1:04:04But love him. What a godsend that that we have
- 1:04:07him here on this? And in track and field, but he
- 1:04:11really talks about how he thinks about coaching, not that he's
- 1:04:14not a Sprint, coach is not a distance coach, and just with
- 1:04:16the general and how you have to like not have limitations
- 1:04:19because we brought up the high jump men's World Record and as I
- 1:04:22would you ever give me, it's not gonna get broken.
- 1:04:24Of course, it is like, that's what they said before.
- 1:04:26He jumped it into the just the thought process that he and
- 1:04:30company company. Really changed me and then he
- 1:04:33brought in a quote again that really changed me in regards to
- 1:04:37helping not judge others. People, he brought up George
- 1:04:40Williams. Quote of if you're not in the
- 1:04:41Huddle you don't know the play Indian and so it was awesome to
- 1:04:45go get George Williams on the podcast.
- 1:04:47Hear the man say it. And just that, like, when I
- 1:04:49think about judging people, for whatever reason, like, oh man, I
- 1:04:53can't believe they didn't choose Gila putting or give me my kid
- 1:04:55that that it's like oh you know what?
- 1:04:57I don't know what's going on. I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:05:00So it helps me like how do I meet you where you are today?
- 1:05:03Knowing that I don't know everything that's going on you
- 1:05:06today and you may jump out and for some reason I had coaches to
- 1:05:09her me and I used to get like defensive and I was like, that's
- 1:05:20what I've got now. No, not anytime.
- 1:05:44Oh man that's a lot of fun. I really do love alumni as of
- 1:05:47the podcast that come on here. Now this guy's not an alumni,
- 1:05:51he's barely an alumni of a school.
- 1:05:53He's that jockey and greed in this world, it is yourself here
- 1:05:56Jake. So my name is Jake and Josh, I'm
- 1:05:59not a coach and recruiting recruiting coordinator, right
- 1:06:01now the University of Innsbruck in Central Virginia.
- 1:06:04Now, how many years or how? Conventions, have you come to?
- 1:06:07This is my second convention. So last year was my first.
- 1:06:09Yeah, that's where we first met. Yeah.
- 1:06:12But yeah. So it's been a lot of fun here
- 1:06:14to in college coaching the other person as a whole, for four and
- 1:06:18a half years. It is from high school coaching,
- 1:06:19a lot of still in college and how different as you approach
- 1:06:24this week this year, this week. How different are you
- 1:06:27approaching it than last week when you were green and, you
- 1:06:29know, probably wide-eyed and like, oh my God, everybody's
- 1:06:31here, there's so many things I can do on the schedule.
- 1:06:34How are you approaching? It differently this year,
- 1:06:37really? Think that the biggest thing
- 1:06:38that I've been trying to do into approached differently is just
- 1:06:40taking in as much information as possible.
- 1:06:42Meet as many people as possible, taking everything kind of day by
- 1:06:45day and taking each experience as as its own.
- 1:06:49What are you like? Maybe you did this last year,
- 1:06:51but is there anything that when you look to the schedule, you
- 1:06:53highlighted double like you highlighted and circled.
- 1:06:56Like, I am not in this scene. This?
- 1:06:58What with what that money for the convention?
- 1:07:03Probably Sean Du Nord stage his Symposium when he was talking
- 1:07:06about, I think I remember correctly.
- 1:07:08It was like your muscular adaptation syndrome, okay coming
- 1:07:11from Olympic weightlifting because that's a huge part of
- 1:07:13what I do. So I also do a lot of the
- 1:07:14strength patient programme for our throwers.
- 1:07:17So getting an opportunity to kind of hear him speak about
- 1:07:19that. Take what he talked about
- 1:07:21translate, what I do for our program and everything like
- 1:07:24that, help our kids and that was, that was a big one, this
- 1:07:27year. I think David Symposium is going
- 1:07:30to be a big ones. I mean, yeah, come on, hashtag
- 1:07:32Legend. What's he speaking?
- 1:07:38I should probably know that right, who cares is on the
- 1:07:42schedule and he's going to talk about Tic-Tac-Toe strategies.
- 1:07:45Well, I'm gonna play Tic-Tac-Toe, it Don talks, he's
- 1:07:47one of the people lose schexnayder is one that's like,
- 1:07:50over talking, right? Well, I'm just gonna go because
- 1:07:52I learn something. How are you?
- 1:07:54You know, when the when the greats are speaking?
- 1:07:55Because as soon as they start talking, everyone else's dead
- 1:07:57silent their writing things down.
- 1:07:59Yeah, yeah. Well, the to give a little bit
- 1:08:02of a preview you so, season 4 of The Gila Phoenix connections,
- 1:08:05like a starts on January 2nd engineer, and we're kicking off,
- 1:08:08season 4 with Dan half. Oh, that's kind of and as we
- 1:08:11were getting ready to interviewed and month or so ago,
- 1:08:14another coach, I don't know if you must be telling stories, I
- 1:08:17won't name him but he said, hey, here's my dad passed or he was
- 1:08:21speaking. This is recently, this goes
- 1:08:22because for a long time now, they say No rookie like you
- 1:08:25jack, he said, all I did was just sit there and write, not
- 1:08:28like I was front row. And I've been coaching for 30
- 1:08:30years and I just sat there in the front row and he goes, and I
- 1:08:32remember at the very last thing, I just Wrote?
- 1:08:33I am so dumb because Dan is so sorry.
- 1:08:36So so no, well, Jake. So what we have a little fun
- 1:08:39here today, how got 100 only cheating?
- 1:08:42I got 100 random questions and, you know, you guys are out there
- 1:08:45and live world. You know how random these are 1
- 1:08:48through 100. You get to pick the number that
- 1:08:49we're going to ask. It's going to 52.
- 1:08:53What's the significance of 52? That was my first football
- 1:08:57number back in like kiwi, football team.
- 1:09:00Let's get drunk, man. If you could be in in, in any
- 1:09:04video game, which one would it be?
- 1:09:06You get it, man. Like you, you attacking Donkey
- 1:09:08Kong or something? But what game would you be a
- 1:09:10number Tron? They were in the game.
- 1:09:11Yeah. That's a tough one right now,
- 1:09:15probably God works. I'm Justin, I'm not a huge gamer
- 1:09:18but I've been seen all the videos on that and that looks
- 1:09:20like a beak. Probably not the most chill
- 1:09:58activity but working out. Yeah, honestly, just something
- 1:10:02about it. So relaxing and having like that
- 1:10:04set goal, Papa headphones in and everything like that wasn't you
- 1:10:06know I'm a big rock fans always rock.
- 1:10:08Big, big AC/DC van. Yeah.
- 1:10:11So Wearing that and just going after really hard to have a lot
- 1:10:13of fun with that and friends tag along that kind of thing is
- 1:10:16always the signs will wrap us up your man, what are you looking
- 1:10:18forward to the most in the 2023 season?
- 1:10:22She's probably just overall the experience, the experience with
- 1:10:24with the athletes, everything like that and watching them grow
- 1:10:27and develop. That's been the biggest thing I
- 1:10:28learned in year. One was just everything you can
- 1:10:30do to help the kids get better, help them grow, develop
- 1:10:33athletically personally and everything that they're doing
- 1:10:36and seeing the growth of they made from last year to this year
- 1:10:39was incredible and seeing what they're going to do in.
- 1:10:41Three seasons and even better. You know I just hope for you and
- 1:10:46I just know because I know it to be true so long satisfying
- 1:10:49career man you know it's it's great.
- 1:10:51I remember my first couple of years coaching and just to know
- 1:10:54it's everything it's all consuming and you gotta know you
- 1:10:57gotta think long-term and that's not the greatest thing on
- 1:10:59Twitter of all places of course, Kimber, who was, I'm so sorry.
- 1:11:03What a sales rep, Mokelumne, we talked about just like you guys
- 1:11:11Giudice, Victoria. I think about what you're doing
- 1:11:14here. But I think, you know, you've
- 1:11:16got the things up here and here you have a long career, we just
- 1:11:20can't have you burned out and be down at the 30. 35.
- 1:11:23Yeah. I mean, let's take a selfie.
- 1:11:25All right, thanks for being alive.
- 1:11:27Feel that buttocks. Connections podcast.
- 1:11:28Right here, you sta sta. 2022 convention, and you're still
- 1:11:32here online. That's quite amazing.
- 1:11:34We're going to see who's coming up, next organized.
- 1:11:39And we're going to have a lot of fun as we continue here.
- 1:11:41In Denver Colorado at the u.s. tfcc a convention.
- 1:11:46I almost said winter meeting convention here in 2022.
- 1:11:50All right, I'm letting everybody introduce themselves.
- 1:11:52Go ahead. Introduce yourself your Chris,
- 1:11:54Chris. We time at Seattle Pacific
- 1:11:55University and yeah, I'm a regular here at the convention.
- 1:11:59So yeah, you jump ahead of my questions.
- 1:12:08I just hear someone who was there for the division to me.
- 1:12:11And they told me about something that I really got to check out
- 1:12:14how I don't remember what it is, there's a museum.
- 1:12:16So like a real oh yeah it's got the Rock and Roll Hall Of.
- 1:12:18He's got it's got to be mo pop the Museum of Pop history and it
- 1:12:21was incredible. Yeah, he's my friend from Emory
- 1:12:23rutile actually. Oh yeah, he's the he told me
- 1:12:25about. Yeah.
- 1:12:26You know, Bona room and a pearl G.
- 1:12:27Yeah. And I think Bill Gates, put a
- 1:12:30lot of money towards that and I think Eddie Vetter did
- 1:12:33contribute. And so they made sure he got his
- 1:12:35own room. Yeah.
- 1:12:36But what do you get what? I was really getting at?
- 1:12:38What are you coach there at the office?
- 1:12:39I'm mainly our distance coach. I'm associate head coach.
- 1:12:41There and, you know, obviously devil and other stuff when
- 1:12:44needed but primarily distance. Yeah.
- 1:12:45Coach doesn't come with. Just one Ali, you know, it's a
- 1:12:48big. It's a lot of hats.
- 1:12:50Yeah. I'm a track coach that
- 1:12:51specializes in this. There you got time.
- 1:12:54So you said you're a convention regular.
- 1:12:56How many years you've been coming?
- 1:12:57This is my seventh year. Yeah.
- 1:12:58So it's been, you know, pretty involved in committees and a lot
- 1:13:02of things. So it's just, you know what, I
- 1:13:06think about this podcast, you know, coaches connection.
- 1:13:10It just feels like an extension. What we do here, right
- 1:13:13Community, a lot of collaboration, sharing ideas,
- 1:13:16it's great. I actually kind of Wonder, I
- 1:13:18mean, I kind of know where I got the idea for doing what I want
- 1:13:20to do for about I wondered is this is my this is my Super Bowl
- 1:13:24and I love going to the NCAA championships and that is
- 1:13:26amazing. They are phenomenal to me.
- 1:13:28This is my this is my weakness. Oh I know, I know and I wonder
- 1:13:34if there's something subconsciously that that's what
- 1:13:36helped me because I actually started this before Cove and I
- 1:13:38was as a pre covid podcaster. I wonder if there's something
- 1:13:42kind of subconscious in there. So tell me as you two.
- 1:13:45You've got it down. Been here, seven years, you got
- 1:13:47it down like you know, you got the schedule and you gotta work
- 1:13:49your time. What are you looking forward to
- 1:13:51the most this week? I always look forward to a lot
- 1:13:54of our committee work. You know, we these committees
- 1:13:56are among division to executive committee and and serve as vice
- 1:14:00president for that committee. And so there's a lot of really
- 1:14:04interesting legislation that we're talking about right now
- 1:14:06some proposals. And and that's just a really
- 1:14:08hard working. Perfect.
- 1:14:09It's thankless work in many ways.
- 1:14:11It's It's conference calls every month but then this is our time
- 1:14:14that, okay? We're together we're in a room
- 1:14:16and it's just people who are very invested in sport.
- 1:14:20I obviously, one of my highlights obviously balam in.
- 1:14:23You can do with that, but the coaches Hall of Fame is a big
- 1:14:27deal, especially as a younger coach.
- 1:14:29I'm in my 30s and looking at being inspired by these coaches,
- 1:14:33from these amazing people. Yeah.
- 1:14:35And not all of them. Have big Power, five schools,
- 1:14:37either. Some of the best coaches are
- 1:14:39coaching high school with the coaching smaller, Schools.
- 1:14:42And so, for me, when I'm thinking about where my career
- 1:14:46is going, and it just gives me so much, hope in like, what is
- 1:14:50possible in this profession, you know?
- 1:14:53So I know. I just listed basically
- 1:14:54everything about convention though, I missed like 100
- 1:14:57things, that's it. Still trying to be a family man.
- 1:15:13You're married. It's plus coach.
- 1:15:15So I do appreciate that. You're bored.
- 1:15:17You, I've got some random questions here.
- 1:15:18Awesome. Hey random questions.
- 1:15:20Let's do it. Did, they are off the wall.
- 1:15:22Ran up here. So 1 through 100, you get to
- 1:15:24pick the number. 38, why 38, why 38?
- 1:15:29This is gonna I don't even it's high school.
- 1:15:32We had what we called red numbers like red.
- 1:15:35Like red number five, red like Star Wars X-Wing Fighters before
- 1:15:39every race we check in red 38. Stay involved.
- 1:15:42So we're ready. Okay, well this is perfect for
- 1:15:57what we were just talking about earlier.
- 1:15:58It's Chow Time. What's your favorite music?
- 1:16:00Artist and song? Favorite music artist and song.
- 1:16:04My favorite band right now is the War on Drugs.
- 1:16:07Their van out of Philly, their incredible very layer.
- 1:16:11Adam relief guys is incredible musician favorite song.
- 1:16:18Gosh, I'm much more of a much more album guy.
- 1:16:21Yes, I'm not saying I'm a vinyl guy with album Person.
- 1:16:29So speaking of songs. It's huh one song one song you
- 1:16:33get you can put overheat 100 times.
- 1:16:35So you better like it. What's the one song?
- 1:16:37Yeah. Yeah going on here.
- 1:16:39What's your favorite one drug song?
- 1:16:41If your lawn drug song would be it's their last Disturbed last
- 1:16:47song in Reverse still in Reverse.
- 1:16:49I love the last song on their third album.
- 1:16:52So I'm not I'm a Christian hip-hop fan.
- 1:16:55Yes, exclusively in the gravel something.
- 1:16:57I'm going to loosen the War on Drugs in Reverse.
- 1:17:00Yeah. Say, yeah, let's not album.
- 1:17:02That's great. So yeah, I'm not gonna do it.
- 1:17:06That's great. Thank you so much for being
- 1:17:10here. It's like yeah.
- 1:17:12Alright being a live podcast right here at the USGA.
- 1:17:16Okay, thanks. All right.
- 1:17:19The crowd is standing. I think I can.
- 1:17:20I scared everybody off by saying that we were going to go to
- 1:17:23seven and that was it. But I'm going to go on.
- 1:17:26If you're going to be here, I'm going to be here.
- 1:17:27They're going to be here. We're going to keep going on
- 1:17:29here so we'll see. See where it goes.
- 1:17:32And what happens here on the live taping of the Gulf of
- 1:17:34extracting Fields, connections podcast.
- 1:17:37All right, we got our next person in the hot seat.

- 1:18:00Twitter at Iconium that easy and Jason here today said, hey, he's
- 1:18:05not here at the convention. He's a high school.

- 1:23:02Yeah, I'll be here. Yeah.
- 1:23:07You know, we named the podcast, the connections podcast for a
- 1:23:09reason man. I love connecting with people
- 1:23:12and new people and we got another new person here today.
- 1:23:15I love it. Introduce yourself here, my
- 1:23:16friend, my name is Alex, Diversity.
- 1:23:22I love Alex, scoop come a little closer for me here.
- 1:23:26So you're at Middle Tennessee, State University.
- 1:23:28Which so I have to admit something, I do, you know, I've
- 1:23:32done this podcast, we're getting started and our fourth season in
- 1:23:34January and there is a rhyme and reason to the guests that we
- 1:23:39have on the podcast. But I do feel sometimes a little
- 1:23:43bit of a responsibility to interview coaches.
- 1:23:47That may not be around for very long and that regret it.
- 1:23:51Hit me a little bit with my dear friend Dean Haze over this past
- 1:23:54year. And this story is amazing and I
- 1:23:58just I kind of kicked myself of not being able to capture that
- 1:24:02for other people for posterity reasons.
- 1:24:04Love Dean with all my heart, this great.
- 1:24:08I mean, he built this program to Rarities.
- 1:24:10I wouldn't have a job if you didn't do the program's where it
- 1:24:13is. He left a great legacy behind
- 1:24:16big shoes for me to film. Yeah.
- 1:24:19If I can be happy coach at the top Legacy behind all of that
- 1:24:23means L done its work. You know, Alex will position,
- 1:24:30you talked about filling his shoes, you don't fill his shoes,
- 1:24:32feel your shoes and you build your own legacy knowing that you
- 1:24:35have the experience and joy of having known in watched him do
- 1:24:39his crap. So I just wanted to say that to
- 1:24:42you there. Who shouted in Hayes, man.
- 1:24:45Love the into death and miss him dearly.
- 1:24:48He was, I was a young coach at Troy University and would see
- 1:24:52Dean all the time. It's always a selfless, man.
- 1:24:56That's the best compliment. I can give that.
- 1:24:58Looks, tell us about the convention.
- 1:24:59How many years have you gone to the convention here?
- 1:25:02This is my first year at the convention.
- 1:25:03Yeah, it's my first year as a coach.
- 1:25:06So okay, okay, so you're smart guy, you looked at the schedule
- 1:25:11before you got here and it's a long schedule.
- 1:25:13What's one or two? Things that you Circle that you
- 1:25:15were like, there's no way I'm missing this.
- 1:25:18So I'm gonna actually exactly in the seminar but it was the one
- 1:25:21for rookie head, coaches and assistant, coaches and kind of
- 1:25:24what it takes to become head coach.
- 1:25:26Obviously, I'm still young. I'm doing the coaching
- 1:25:28profession, but at the end of the day, that's the ultimate
- 1:25:30goal as the trans to be able to have everything I can look at
- 1:25:37this point that holding the future doesn't matter.
- 1:25:40Did you do member? Who's given that a love that?
- 1:25:42I do not, yes, it's okay. You got the knowledge?
- 1:25:45That's the most important part. Well, it's, we're having a
- 1:25:47little fun here tonight. I've got 100 random questions
- 1:25:49and they are the random my friend.
- 1:25:51There, 1 through 100. You get to pick the number of
- 1:25:53what question you get tonight. See all of us old people from
- 1:25:59the Midwest with us Jordan and you went great.
- 1:26:02I love it. 23, you know when you were you were at 23, I try not
- 1:26:06to remember that you're at halftime.
- 1:26:08I'm pretty sick. I'm exactly double your age.
- 1:26:11It only gets worse, just so you're all right, man. 23.
- 1:26:14Get out of my kitchen man. What's your least favorite food
- 1:26:18or ingredient? Oh, we're in trouble.
- 1:27:00Just trying to see how far they've come.
- 1:27:07We had a great fall training made a lot of progress and I
- 1:27:11think the kids are ready and I know I'm ready to put that to
- 1:27:15relation to see all the hard work they put in.
- 1:27:17Will you never get another first year?
- 1:27:19So enjoy it, give yourself a break.
- 1:27:22You need You're going to make mistakes.
- 1:27:24There's lots of coaches here, been 20, 30 years, and they're
- 1:27:27making mistakes. You're human.
- 1:27:28So, give yourself a break, and just know that it's going to
- 1:27:30work out. You doing a great job.
- 1:27:32Thank you. You learn from your mistakes.
- 1:27:34Oh, absolutely. That's alright, let's take a
- 1:27:35selfie, let's do it and I appreciate you coming on the
- 1:27:37live recording of the go up and it's connections.
- 1:27:40Podcast. Thank you very much for having
- 1:27:42me. Appreciate you brother.
- 1:27:43How precious man I remember my first year and golly boy, did I
- 1:27:47make some mistakes? They say you know you brought up
- 1:27:49a good thing, he talked about, you learn from your mistakes.
- 1:27:51Well, that was true. I would Be it genius but I don't
- 1:27:54think that's always necessarily true with with this guy here.
- 1:27:58Alright this next guest is going to be a hoot.
- 1:28:00He better not disappoint us because we're recording because
- 1:28:03I met today's today. This guest and he had me
- 1:28:07cracking up, introduce yourself my friend and you told me you
- 1:28:18threatened me this morning that you wanted to be my butt in
- 1:28:24Together as one. You know, he's okay.
- 1:28:27Will someone tell me? This is your first year?
- 1:28:38Because the Jim tells me you're smart guy, you know, the
- 1:28:41schedules Long, right? You had to exert some things,
- 1:28:45one or two things that you're like, there's no way I'm missing
- 1:28:47you. This, what were some of those
- 1:28:48things are not miss for you this week?
- 1:28:50It's actually going to be, I think is, well, last Is it by
- 1:28:53coach Taylor? Okay, BYU definitely got me was
- 1:28:59that I learned about her story and just like, you know, I feel
- 1:29:05like that is going to be a great with just because if I can get
- 1:29:07that information now. Yeah, not to put yourself in a
- 1:29:18box there. So you hit the nail on the head
- 1:29:20there. Maybe it's, maybe it's some
- 1:29:21generalization that Younger coaches, don't think about
- 1:29:24mental health until later that year.
- 1:29:25They think about that X's and O's and the techniques and
- 1:29:28networking things like that. And also as a throws coach,
- 1:29:31you're going to go, listen to a distance coach and exactly like,
- 1:29:34you know, generalization here. But like to listen to Don
- 1:29:37Babbitt or whoever is, but a distance Coast but she got to
- 1:29:40talk to me about really good and you know, I also Ukraine's
- 1:29:46everything. You know, I want to be versatile
- 1:29:48because you know as you know Valentine we're starting
- 1:29:52program. You never know when I might have
- 1:29:55to coach a job, you know? So instead of saying oh you
- 1:30:00know, I mean my kids, you know Wise beyond
- 1:30:18your years, my friend. What's awesome.
- 1:30:19Is that layer? So that will continue on, that's
- 1:30:22really good. We're gonna see how wise you
- 1:30:24are. I've got 100.
- 1:30:26Okay, random question is here. Okay, it's 1 through 100.
- 1:30:28You get to pick a number. All right 64?
- 1:30:31What's the significance of 6400? My room full of all right man,
- 1:30:35let's talk about pets pet, peeves.
- 1:30:38What's your biggest pet peeve in life?
- 1:30:41This time because you have so many, like, how do I narrow it
- 1:30:45down to just the biggest? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:30:54With something that. Yeah, I'm a family guy guy,
- 1:30:56right? So, here's the thing with this
- 1:30:57grinds Mike. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:00Is it people that ask you a question and just won't shut up
- 1:31:02and keep making, you ask the question, you know what
- 1:31:06happened? Even in my face.
- 1:31:08I don't like when people assume I'm angry when I use, you know,
- 1:31:12like James Harrison the football player for the still here.
- 1:31:15Sure, everybody. You're right?
- 1:31:19Yeah. Like, do you know?
- 1:31:20I'm listening, I'm listening to some Katy Perry right now.
- 1:31:23Head. All right look you know I'm
- 1:31:25listening to some music but you know an outside I might just be
- 1:31:29you know that's that's definitely interesting.
- 1:31:35I've worked on not judging so it's a judge you right thing.
- 1:31:38Oh here's this guy's big. That's a good thing about
- 1:31:54tracking. Always lot of different
- 1:31:57different people, different places, I mean, everybody
- 1:32:00dressing different. You know?
- 1:32:01And you know just I definitely when I just found fully decided
- 1:32:05one to go coach and I was like the only way I would be
- 1:32:08somewhere thing. Accept me for me.
- 1:32:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tattoos, you know, you know, you
- 1:32:18know, you know, something like that, you know.
- 1:32:20So, you know, that's definitely, You know when I say okay this is
- 1:32:25the right thing. Yeah we talked about when we
- 1:32:31recruit athletes finding the right fit.
- 1:32:33It's also important for the coach to find the right fit and
- 1:32:36Fab University or High School setting that they're going to
- 1:32:38accept you for who you are. Because again you're an
- 1:32:40individual unique person. So exact lets you want to
- 1:32:43change. Yes, to find people noticing
- 1:32:45over you. I feel like this how success is
- 1:32:47built and you know, of course, you can be, you know, training
- 1:32:50and all that stuff, but I feel like this is one of those Things
- 1:32:54where there's somebody in your life.
- 1:32:55You want to go above and beyond for just because of which I went
- 1:32:59through or something like that and I feel like once you get to
- 1:33:02their relationship with the student athlete that's when, you
- 1:33:05know, that's when they didn't, I wasn't expecting.
- 1:33:08Yeah, things happen. I have to do this, you know, and
- 1:33:11that's, that's how I was for me with coaching mean that then I
- 1:33:15had coach methodology know. They definitely.
- 1:33:17I wasn't the best student athlete and I wasn't the best
- 1:33:20student. But you know, they gave me time
- 1:33:22to actually Get right. You know it do everything I need
- 1:33:25to do that definitely helped me like I mean a lots of that's why
- 1:33:28I'm I'm happy with developing athletes.
- 1:33:29You know you know because elements is key you know that's
- 1:33:32going to go on way after they you know some of these kids I
- 1:33:37saw they give you guys. I'm glad I never touched that
- 1:33:39you know me a lawyer doctor. So it's gonna be real fun to
- 1:33:46watch your development. Yeah, thanks to.
- 1:33:48So you're really you're barely at the starting line.
- 1:33:50Yeah, exactly career. It's because that really
- 1:33:52interesting Gonna be a great journey.
- 1:33:54Yeah, I'm definitely excited. Let's get our selfie in here
- 1:33:57man. I appreciate you very much for
- 1:33:59being here on the podcast. Trusting me here at the live
- 1:34:02record. He said, for tonight, we go for
- 1:34:04time somehow some way you could have done, you know, a literally
- 1:34:11met Malik this morning down actually kind of afternoon for
- 1:34:15lunch down in the lobby and just about a great character.
- 1:34:18What a great just bubbly person. That's that's the kind of guy
- 1:34:21that I want my kid. To be coached by Band.
- 1:34:25All right. Hey, let's have you introduce
- 1:34:27yourselves. All right, let's go.
- 1:34:28After a couple of these, it gets a little where my at look like
- 1:34:31my talking to can't. I can imagine that very well.
- 1:34:35We'll introduce yourself here. All right.
- 1:34:37Mike, Ross Lena, I'm the head track and cross country coach at
- 1:34:41Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
- 1:34:43Okay. I was gonna say because there's
- 1:34:44two, Embry riddles, right? And it sure, you know, Florida,
- 1:34:47what I'm a Florida is one of the real one.
- 1:34:51Yes, you know, Florida is a we're a bigger campus.
- 1:34:56So there's two of us has one in Arizona.
- 1:34:58Went to Florida or are they connect Holodeck sisters?
- 1:35:00Yes. Okay.
- 1:35:01We actually have a third campus which is our Worldwide.
- 1:35:03Campus is more of our online presence as well.
- 1:35:07So well in the Arizona ones. Nai.
- 1:35:10Yeah. And then we're in CA a division
- 1:35:12to about three times the size. Yeah.
- 1:35:15So tell me how many years have you been coming to conventional?
- 1:35:20Forever. Okay, that's great answer.
- 1:35:22It's probably at least eight to ten.
- 1:35:24So as an expert in the convention, what is when you
- 1:35:27were looking at this week and I know you guys you guys are smart
- 1:35:30you kind of plan out your week. There's some not you know, can't
- 1:35:32miss topics or event what was your one or two?
- 1:35:35Just that there's no way no matter what happens.
- 1:35:38I got to make this. I mean number one you got to
- 1:35:41make the Mundo part out. There you go absolutely.
- 1:35:43Yeah that's number one hundred percent.
- 1:35:45I remember too. Yeah I go to parties you know
- 1:35:50for me. Unlike three committees.
- 1:35:52So 90% of my time here I think spent meetings, or the not fun
- 1:35:57part trying to get to a couple symposiums just to kind of hear
- 1:36:01some things. But what is the meetings for
- 1:36:04those executive committee meetings and things like that?
- 1:36:07You said the not fun part but what's that is?
- 1:36:10So then why do I let me ask you that way?
- 1:36:12What? It's not fun.
- 1:36:13Got himself a bit there. What do I do?
- 1:36:16It's maybe not necessarily the fun part but it's the most
- 1:36:19important part. It's making a difference in our
- 1:36:22sport, trying to grow our sport, trying to make it better.
- 1:36:24You know, what are the things that we can do to fine-tune
- 1:36:27things to make it better for our student athletes.
- 1:36:29Have a great student athlete experience, you know, but also
- 1:36:33to try to make it the most competitive environment we can
- 1:36:36and also be able to Market it. How are we going to Market it to
- 1:36:39make track and field, bigger, and better, and things like what
- 1:36:42you're doing, like, having podcast out there.
- 1:36:44So, you know, people around the world hear about us, know about
- 1:36:47it, know what we're doing and know that we're producing.
- 1:36:50Some quality product at all levels and how do we let people
- 1:36:55know how good of an experience for having and but what
- 1:36:59difference making we can respect?
- 1:37:01Well I appreciate you doing it because I know it's not always
- 1:37:03the fun part but it is shaping our sport, it is important and
- 1:37:06you don't get paid extra it's more hours so I do appreciate
- 1:37:10that. And while that might not be the
- 1:37:12most fun thing in the world. This is right here.
- 1:37:14All right, I've got 100 random questions.
- 1:37:16Numbered 1 through 100. You get to pick the number.
- 1:37:18You know, my favorite numbers choose.
- 1:37:20That's what? I always go with, but my boy.
- 1:37:22Chris Reed told me I should take 38.
- 1:37:24I don't, I don't know. Okay, let's do 38.
- 1:37:29Let's go. Number two is your favorite
- 1:37:31number. Let's start there.
- 1:37:33So number to 88 miles per hour. What rules he had rules?
- 1:37:49Marvel Universe has their own rules.
- 1:37:51What's your what's your number-one rule?
- 1:37:52If you're going to be a Time Travelers, don't screw it up.
- 1:37:57Yeah, you know what, I love simple rules.
- 1:38:00You know, I'm kind of that way with my team, you know, we don't
- 1:38:03have a lot of Team rules. It's there's expectations and
- 1:38:06there's things. You enjoy yourself.
- 1:38:09Go, learn something. Yeah, but don't mess with time.
- 1:38:12That's a good. When you come back, leave it the
- 1:38:15same way you found. It's a good culture.
- 1:38:16If I could have a lot of rules, be respectful, be things like
- 1:38:19that. Love it.
- 1:38:20All right. 30 it man, it's about time.
- 1:38:23What's your favorite music artist and song?
- 1:38:26My favorite music artists on. So right now most of the music I
- 1:38:30listen to is all Christian music.
- 1:38:32So right now, my favorite artists.
- 1:38:34Are we? The kingdom?
- 1:38:35Yeah, okay, don't tread on me. Okay.
- 1:38:40All right. So I'm a huge and it's also kind
- 1:38:51of like rocket Christian so it's not it's something I can listen
- 1:38:54to I'm running and And I'm a huge Christian hip-hop say okay
- 1:38:59that's 90% of the music. I listen to McCray and enough
- 1:39:04and in extreme I can guys like that.
- 1:39:07That's my to my genre keep seeing it.
- 1:39:10My Twitter post when I work out when I posted it.
- 1:39:12Yeah, those lyrics are all from. Th Mom.
- 1:39:14Okay? Wonder where some, of, those
- 1:39:17poets Kenya. All them come from all those
- 1:39:19guys, so we're off the wall. Yeah, it had to figure it out.
- 1:39:22It's what I'm listening to a line or two.
- 1:39:24Catches me. I'll go over to my notes.
- 1:39:26Action and write it down for a future feature.
- 1:39:28Phones - pretty cool. The show, man.
- 1:39:30Let's get our selfie in here. All right.
- 1:39:33I appreciate you so much. Yeah, my groom for you this
- 1:39:36year, man. It's gonna be a good year.
- 1:39:37I just feel excited for it's going to be going to be.
- 1:39:39Excellent. Awesome.
- 1:39:40Well, I appreciate it later today.
- 1:39:43Yeah. Hey, and this guy here, he's
- 1:39:45going to be a future guest. He's on my list, but
- 1:39:48unfortunately the list is long and I only get two people a
- 1:39:53year. That's how big is he, right.
- 1:39:56It's hard to get on the show, but Mike's going to be on there.
- 1:39:59One day as well as this guy right here.
- 1:40:01Introduce yourself to us, please.
- 1:40:03I'm Shaun Phillips. Head coach in college and Goshen
- 1:40:06Indiana, son. I feel like your guy that
- 1:40:11haven't known for very long but it, Feels like I've known you
- 1:40:14for a long time. I feel like that too in between
- 1:40:18social media posts, a back-and-forth.
- 1:40:20And like, just promoting the sport and not just the sport but
- 1:40:23coaches and athletes who are doing good things and putting
- 1:40:25more positively back in your sport.
- 1:40:27Yeah. I think we've done that.
- 1:40:28A lot like an overlap. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:30Yeah I love that man and you're you know you're such a serious
- 1:40:34and Giver type of guy I think that may be what the tracks like
- 1:40:37oh this feels like a guy that I'd be like you live in the same
- 1:40:39town who you boys. I'm saying yeah.
- 1:40:43Tell us John about this week of the convention.
- 1:40:46You are smart guy. You have a list of all the
- 1:40:48different things going on at then.
- 1:40:50Speaking topic to meetings Etc. What were the one or two like
- 1:40:53you highlighted, big-time circle.
- 1:40:55Like I can't miss this. So there were a few different
- 1:40:58things that were really exciting for me, obviously.
- 1:41:02So it's my first year at notion. That's right.
- 1:41:04Because initially the transition I never feel like I know enough
- 1:41:08about being a head coach. So there was a rookie head coach
- 1:41:12or a first year at Otis. I've been head coach for a few
- 1:41:14years and I know that I don't know everything the minute I
- 1:41:17think I do, I need to stop coaching, you're in trouble, so
- 1:41:21that was one. That was exciting.
- 1:41:23There's always someone recruiting, that's always kind
- 1:41:25of like what's the new and latest thing coming out.
- 1:41:27But I know that the chandan already UCLA has a really good
- 1:41:30presentation coming up. Use a Grand Valley when I was in
- 1:41:32Michigan and he's a great guy. Charles, and furna also doesn't
- 1:41:37have a really good one. So I mean there have been a few
- 1:41:39that I'm really, really excited to see it's because their
- 1:41:42quality people who Done call them.
- 1:41:43Right? So you brought up some
- 1:41:45interesting. John about being your first year
- 1:41:47at Goshen are number one podcast by listings.
- 1:41:51Is by may be no surprise you sex, me?
- 1:41:53Wish I was one of the things. One of the reasons why I think
- 1:41:58that episode is so important, that if you haven't listened to
- 1:42:00it, absolutely have to listen to it.
- 1:42:02If you have listened to it, you need to listen to it again, but
- 1:42:04we will talks about if you could go back in time, what he would
- 1:42:07do different and he advises coaches, you know, we pay our
- 1:42:10coaches out here, so little money that You can go somewhere
- 1:42:14and make extra money. You need to do it because you
- 1:42:15need to be set yourself up for when you're 60, 70, retirement,
- 1:42:18that such a right. But we get into it.
- 1:42:21I just, I switched jobs a lot when I was coaching, I went to
- 1:42:23five different places in 10 years, right?
- 1:42:25So I did as well. And we always have these common
- 1:42:29excuses, reasons, whatever why we don't leave now, the kids had
- 1:42:33a good recruiting class. I don't want to leave these guys
- 1:42:35or gals etcetera. How did you handle transition of
- 1:42:39where you were to come to Goshen and all those outside voices
- 1:42:43that We hear when we start talking about other jobs.
- 1:42:45So the biggest thing for me was having a position that we not
- 1:42:50only facilitated us to be successful in our Sport and
- 1:42:53helped me grow as a coach, and help provide for my student
- 1:42:56athletes and give them a great opportunity.
- 1:42:58But it was also a chance to have my family.
- 1:43:01Be well, taken care of, I love my wife and my son dearly like
- 1:43:05they are my are my reason for getting up and working my butt
- 1:43:08off to do and so clean. We told Kids are Rochester.
- 1:43:14Why was there not just University of Michigan?
- 1:43:17I said, you know, it's gonna take a lot for me to let you
- 1:43:18move from here because we had in laws that can help facilitate
- 1:43:22some babysitting and they were very supportive of us and we're
- 1:43:25about an hour away from my folks now.
- 1:43:26So like we still have family close by but it's a 30,000
- 1:43:31person community. That loves the town.
- 1:43:33Almost looks like it should get one of those.
- 1:43:35Hallmark means it's very close knit up because it's close.
- 1:43:39Nick, you're going to have a lot of passionate people.
- 1:43:41And the big thing I tell, Kids if you want to go somewhere fast
- 1:43:44go alone if you want to go somewhere far go together.
- 1:43:47And so if we have a town that buys into what we're doing, our
- 1:43:50kids by and what we're doing, it makes it that much easier to go
- 1:43:53over. So well you're on your own right
- 1:43:56here. I have 100 random questions.
- 1:43:59You get to pick the number of your questions.
- 1:44:02Have any argue, we get to keep it.
- 1:44:07That's too much work. Okay.
- 1:44:08All right. You know what?
- 1:44:11Do 15 the date of my son's birthday from.
- 1:44:13I love a man in game. Who's your favorite comic book
- 1:44:16character? Captain America, one quite
- 1:44:20frankly because even when things are tough or hard, he still has
- 1:44:23to make the call to do the right thing.
- 1:44:25It's not always easy to do the right thing.
- 1:44:28Sometimes our sport, sometimes people like Fall by the wayside
- 1:44:31or say you know what, we're to be easy way out.
- 1:44:34If it were easy, everyone would do it.
- 1:44:35And we've got probably the best and hardest sport in the world.
- 1:44:38Amen. Because we have so many
- 1:44:40different disciplines. So many different things that
- 1:44:41you need to do to accomplish. So it's not easy and he's a guy
- 1:44:46that says I can do this other text.
- 1:44:47The easy route. Yeah.
- 1:44:49And quite frankly, I think that's worth emulating a lot.
- 1:44:53So yeah. It's putting it on stays
- 1:44:54working. Can throw the discus.
- 1:44:56So why not? That's what I knew there.
- 1:44:58Had to be something else in there.
- 1:44:59Yeah, well Sean me, let's get a selfie in here.
- 1:45:02Definitely. And in today's interview, man,
- 1:45:04I'm just so thankful for you. I appreciate everything you do
- 1:45:07and I think you are going to be transformational, occasionally,
- 1:45:09really do I think Not only the program in the school, but with
- 1:45:13your family, when you make decisions based on your family,
- 1:45:17things are gonna work out rather.
- 1:45:19Do I need to go somewhere yourself up.
- 1:45:32Yeah, so we told the line pretty well but it's worked out really
- 1:45:36well for us. I love them and it's just gonna
- 1:45:37keep getting better. I'm excited to watch along and
- 1:45:39watch the journey. Sure.
- 1:45:41Thanks John. Thanks for being on the show
- 1:45:42today. Thank you.
- 1:45:43As we're getting closer. It is 645, you were scheduled
- 1:45:47through 7:00. But again, I'm gonna, there's
- 1:45:49still people out here. I'm gonna make sure everybody
- 1:45:51here gets on the podcast. So if it's 7:00, we're going to
- 1:45:54keep going. I'm not stopping until everybody
- 1:45:57gets in the hot seat tonight. All right.
- 1:45:59So speak in the hot seat. Come on, you can't be shy.
- 1:46:01I'm not sure. You got this tiny camera.
- 1:46:04We got this microphone can't be so it's like when we're in a in
- 1:46:08the plane you know, you decide. Who's gonna get the armrest
- 1:46:12that's the biggest. If we had to
- 1:46:28use things, we had Joseph blue on the podcast, run through SAU
- 1:46:38back. They can't all this in an
- 1:46:39amazing Story on. The podcast, the first time he
- 1:46:42went into our, I won't get into it.
- 1:46:44You just have to listen to it after the show out here, but it
- 1:46:46was, it was quite amazing. So, tell me, John, how many
- 1:46:50times have you come to the convention?
- 1:46:51This is my second one, first one.
- 1:46:59You had no idea what was going on.
- 1:47:03What are you looking forward to the most this year at the
- 1:47:06convention? I get the biggest thing I'm
- 1:47:11trying to do is we focus on my this year?
- 1:47:13I'm not coaching jobs, okay, last year at this print, photos
- 1:47:16and job so I try to hit as many different events.
- 1:47:20Casualties as you can add this year, I'm going to focus in on.
- 1:47:23Just put your Journal so I can really just hone in on what I'm
- 1:47:26trying to perfect. I think that would make it a
- 1:47:28good experience. Is there someone specifically
- 1:47:32you're looking to listen to me this week?
- 1:47:35Yeah, I want to hear Ernie, of course.
- 1:47:38Want to hear Ernie, another Gil podcast alone mother.
- 1:47:40Yeah. Those all the good guys and gals
- 1:47:42are on the podcast. I'm just saying yeah.
- 1:47:44And then I want to drop in on Tony beanie as well, Tony was
- 1:47:49here because I actually coached against Tony when I was coaching
- 1:47:53at speak to a crowd because I
- 1:48:04usually Skip One on One. Don't want to ask a lot of
- 1:48:09questions in. Oh, yeah, well, canonical I
- 1:48:11always will maybe doesn't get his due to be real Frank with
- 1:48:16you in regards to how good he is in our sport as a track and
- 1:48:20field coach. Yeah, I guess he's been a lot of
- 1:48:22places. He's done a lot of great things,
- 1:48:23and I think he has a lot to offer, so whenever I have to
- 1:48:28talk to that's awesome. Well, we have a little fun
- 1:48:31tonight. I've got 100, random questions
- 1:48:33are all numbered 1 through 100, you get to be, there's the only
- 1:48:36part of the destiny. You get to do is The number and
- 1:48:38then I get to ask the questions. We had question rule that
- 1:48:41question. That's right.
- 1:48:42It's all in your mind right now. Spinning around, what number did
- 1:48:44you stop? I'll go with my football
- 1:48:47numbers, but 15. Yeah, it's common way to get the
- 1:48:51numbers. I'll always ask you.
- 1:48:52So what significance? Well football, all right in gay
- 1:48:55men, who is your favorite comic book?
- 1:48:57Character favorite growing up. I watched a lot of Superman and
- 1:49:06Batman. Actually, the Batman cartoon I
- 1:49:09have to go with that, because that, but now isn't it?
- 1:49:15Even though he's the villain, I really did enjoy.
- 1:49:18And yeah, I agree. It was something that would be
- 1:49:23the bad guy but there was something like you just kind of
- 1:49:25drawn because there's like that duality of like the weight of
- 1:49:29the responsibility is on me because he really thought he was
- 1:49:32doing the right thing. Yeah.
- 1:49:33Like he was convinced that his idea was great and it might have
- 1:49:35been a great idea. I think the execution I'm said
- 1:49:38idea it's just where the execution is the right word we
- 1:49:42just executed happened. Yeah, he did very often a
- 1:49:49cheapskate so I wait till they get the Disney plus, but since
- 1:49:53birthday was this past weekend and what his birthday once was
- 1:49:56to go see what conda forever. Have you seen that one?
- 1:49:58Yeah we took the team of the most of the team.
- 1:50:04We went as a team to go watch it on the weekend that it came out
- 1:50:08so you still have the team bonding loved it.
- 1:50:11It was awesome. God.
- 1:50:15Yeah, but I never got black cock but my cancer Comics.
- 1:50:18So he really knows that character very well.
- 1:50:21So, I knew I actually had the original comics of Thanos during
- 1:50:24its enemy were actually had all those nice, but if you all, the
- 1:50:27tradition was the Captain. America Spider-Man is all this
- 1:50:29kind of stuff it with black people to original came out.
- 1:50:33I'm gonna tell my wife was like I'm probably gonna go like
- 1:50:34because I don't know the story and it was amazing.
- 1:50:37Yeah. Then we'll kind of forever nose.
- 1:50:38Like told for sure I can't like to Andros are not going to deal.
- 1:50:41Look me in there. It was amazing.
- 1:50:43Yeah like you don't want another way.
- 1:50:45Be careful. Otherwise a more other guys.
- 1:50:47Yeah I don't think you need to watch the first one to
- 1:50:54understand the second. I don't think so.
- 1:50:55It might help but I don't think so.
- 1:50:56Yeah I think the two Standalone stories is obviously with the
- 1:51:02wasn't yet. They kind of put that in there
- 1:51:04but it was amazing. What are you looking forward to
- 1:51:10the most in the 2023 track season?
- 1:51:15Have a young team. So, I am really interested in
- 1:51:18seeing how my freshman adapt and my sophomores bounce back from
- 1:51:22last year. So I have a really heavy
- 1:51:24freshman sophomore team. So, I want to see how my youth
- 1:51:28adapt to this new environment. I'm sure my dreams is to be okay
- 1:51:31because they're they're all mature and have a few grad
- 1:51:34students. So, I'm like, I don't have to
- 1:51:36worry about them, but I'm interested, but my freshman and
- 1:51:38sophomore go down under your tutelage and what you learn here
- 1:51:42this week and the people that you allow to pour into you,
- 1:51:45they're going to do, they're going to do really well, they're
- 1:51:46gonna be your great Juniors and seniors coming up that you also
- 1:51:48worry about. You can leave your new
- 1:51:50sophomores and freshmen that come in.
- 1:51:52Oh yeah, definitely. Because like all the information
- 1:51:53I get here, goes back on with me and it goes to that.
- 1:51:57Well, this gets to go back home with me.
- 1:51:58I get to do a selfie. All right man, thanks for being
- 1:52:03on the show, I really appreciate.
- 1:52:05Yeah, we have a great season. I love it, man.
- 1:52:08We just virtually keep rolling. We got someone else knew coming
- 1:52:11into the show and we'll see who we've got here.
- 1:52:15I know exactly, we've got your I'm really excited about this
- 1:52:17one, this is going to be, it's going to be interesting and
- 1:52:20really what I love is it's about giving value.
- 1:52:23And today, today, next here on this podcast, we're going to
- 1:52:27talk all about value and value given.
- 1:52:30So please introduce yourself to the audience.
- 1:52:33Hello everyone. My name is Phil Esposito.
- 1:52:35I am Mondo's Business Development, training manager.
- 1:52:39I love it. My title just got changed to
- 1:52:41national business. Development manager was national
- 1:52:43sales manager, but the biz Dev site.
- 1:52:45I'd is this much more? Sure.
- 1:52:46My passion is I appreciate anybody's get this them and
- 1:52:49they're actually a title. Phil, you wanted to talk about
- 1:52:51something specific and I'm gonna put you on the spot because as I
- 1:52:54was preview and you have a huge. Like my, I try to revolve my
- 1:52:58rifle life around giving value. And what you want to talk about
- 1:53:01today is one of the biggest best value.
- 1:53:04Given things that I've seen from a company in our space, in quite
- 1:53:07a while. Why don't you tell me?
- 1:53:08Tell us what I'm talking about? Yeah, that's great to hear.
- 1:53:11So you know at Mondo we are were very passionate Not the
- 1:53:15community. Obviously, coaches play a huge
- 1:53:19role in our business. We want to help coaches, we want
- 1:53:22to help coaches help their athletes honored, officer knows.
- 1:53:26So this past year, we produced a documentary on Mental Health in
- 1:53:32sports and, you know, again mental health.
- 1:53:37It's in our face. We don't pretend to be the
- 1:53:39experts. However, we want to be the
- 1:53:42thought leaders in this. We want to help coaches.
- 1:53:46And so, we put together a 45-minute documentary on mental
- 1:53:51health and sports. We interviewed, we interviewed
- 1:53:54Elite athletes. We interviewed Sports
- 1:53:57psychologists, and we interviewed Superfast.
- 1:54:00And so it was very, very interesting and we zeroed in on
- 1:54:05the role of the fame and how much pressure is fans reporting
- 1:54:08on these athletes. And so we had this documentary
- 1:54:11are all throughout the country during May Mental health
- 1:54:15awareness month. We had it on all the major
- 1:54:18networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, and I've gotten some really great
- 1:54:24feedback, especially from coaches.
- 1:54:28And you know what we want to do is we want to create a resource.
- 1:54:32So now this has become a resource who went so they will
- 1:54:36in turn share it with their athletes and it really is a
- 1:54:39conversation starter. You know?
- 1:54:42And so we've sort of moved on to phase 2.
- 1:54:45We don't want to do a one-off and so we've moved on to phase 2
- 1:54:49and we want to, we want to bring the conversation into the
- 1:54:52schools and so we've created a poster.
- 1:54:55Can I show you? Yeah, this is absolutely.
- 1:54:57It's what we got the video for. Here We Go.
- 1:54:59Normally, it's not a long and I'm like, no, you can't show.
- 1:55:01Excellent. So we've created this poster.
- 1:55:05Lift it up a little bit. There we go.
- 1:55:06Yeah, stay on track. Okay, stay on track.
- 1:55:10And the track is an acronym. And these are these are
- 1:55:14suggestions you know for athletes who are struggling T,
- 1:55:18take a moment or remember to breathe.
- 1:55:21A ask for help. See, call a friend and K, keep
- 1:55:26moving forward and personally that's kind of my favorite.
- 1:55:29Yeah. People.
- 1:55:29So we're hoping coaches and we've got a couple of resources
- 1:55:32Down Below on the bottom and We're hoping coaches will put
- 1:55:35these up in their facilities again as a reminder that and we
- 1:55:41know that all these athletes do struggle at some point that
- 1:55:45there is help out there. So let me ask you feel, you
- 1:55:49know, Mondo obviously very well known for track surface produces
- 1:55:52some of the top checks that was in the world.
- 1:55:56You know, it's funny in our industry, in general, not in
- 1:56:00either of ours, but in general they talk about they sell socks
- 1:56:03and jobs that's kind of the, you know.
- 1:56:04The Sports Marketing world, right?
- 1:56:07You still track surface Trek servicing.
- 1:56:09Why, why do something like this? Why is Mondo?
- 1:56:12This is not. I know what you're putting into
- 1:56:15this financially. It's is not a cheap thing to do.
- 1:56:18Why you could ease. If you didn't do this, no one
- 1:56:20would say, hey, how come on do is working helping us with
- 1:56:23mental health, but you choose to do it without being asked.
- 1:56:26Yeah, it's our, it's our passion, its Community, give
- 1:56:29back it is again, providing resources.
- 1:56:34Versus for coaches, who are so vital in our business.
- 1:56:39And right? So you have the coach, and then
- 1:56:40you have the athlete. So, if we can help the coach
- 1:56:44who, you know, in turn, can help their athlete.
- 1:56:47That's what we're all. That's, that's what we want to
- 1:56:49do. And, you know, we've got, you
- 1:56:51know, models are strong brain in the track and field business,
- 1:56:54right? And so the fact that the world
- 1:56:56we feel like we have a role to play in this.
- 1:56:59So it's something we're very passionate about, we're always
- 1:57:03looking to partner with Like-minded entities and will
- 1:57:06continue to do. So if this in the umbrella of
- 1:57:09Mondo cares, because I know we've there's been a lot of
- 1:57:11events and activities through the Mondo.
- 1:57:13Cares work through. I'm hoping you remember the
- 1:57:16Mondo foot speed event here. Yes, of course, I did.
- 1:57:19We reach some, what we were talking about it earlier.
- 1:57:20Oh yeah, absolutely. So, you know, we put together
- 1:57:24five or six events and then unfortunately, covid be hit a
- 1:57:27brick wall with covid. So we are going to bring you
- 1:57:31back that event in 2300, so we're very excited.
- 1:57:34To be you. Do it here at Euston Station 23.
- 1:57:36Is that the plan at least for now?
- 1:57:38Yeah, people are gonna be very excited about that.
- 1:57:40That's what that's the amazing events and then there's just the
- 1:57:45different people that were talking about today and that was
- 1:57:49a really fun event, you know, to have to have 1500 track and
- 1:57:55field coach has in that Ballroom.
- 1:57:59Watching these young coaches cookie.
- 1:58:02So the goal is to is to do it again.
- 1:58:05I love it will wrap us up the hill.
- 1:58:07Where is someone's listening or watching this right now?
- 1:58:09This will also be on the podcast later on throughout the year
- 1:58:122023. We are.
- 1:58:13Can someone go to find more information about tell me the
- 1:58:17name again, the film it was, I'm okay, I'm not, okay, I'm fine,
- 1:58:20not real, I'm fine. Not really.
- 1:58:21Yes, we're can someone go to learn more about that the
- 1:58:23posters working. Someone go to find a service so
- 1:58:26you can go to, you can go to the Mondo website.
- 1:58:29Go to model cares.com and obviously all our social our
- 1:58:33social. That's so Google Mondo because
- 1:58:36that's the easiest way or Mondo cares.com.
- 1:58:40That's right. I love it man.
- 1:58:42We should you should take a timeout right now and go check
- 1:58:44that out. I think it's extremely valuable
- 1:58:47again the value that you're giving coaches because to me you
- 1:58:50hit the nail on the head when you said without these guys and
- 1:58:53gals you and I don't do anything.
- 1:58:55We could do something else, actually, right?
- 1:58:57Mother doesn't exist. Gil doesn't exist.
- 1:58:59We need to be uplifted honoring these young men and women in
- 1:59:02these old men, as they continue building the greatest sport in
- 1:59:06the world. So just love what you're doing.
- 1:59:09It was an easy, you know, we talked about doing this in the
- 1:59:12podcast, 100 easy. This is a way that we can,
- 1:59:15hopefully helpful and fan the flames and have more awareness
- 1:59:18out there. For this very important topic
- 1:59:20that you're talking about, these very important, people know what
- 1:59:22you're doing, right? Your passion for track and field
- 1:59:25and just super super glad to be here.
- 1:59:28I love it. Maybe we'll even For you we got
- 1:59:29to end with the selfie, right? All right.
- 1:59:34Bill, thank you so much. Thank you sir.
- 1:59:36Appreciate it. Pleasure, make love to my
- 1:59:37friend. Jim man, I'm John, sorry in gym.
- 1:59:40Absolutely. I just love all the people.
- 1:59:45Yeah, you can't steal the headphones, fill all that good,
- 1:59:48that he does, and he was trying to take my headphones away from
- 1:59:51me here at the desk. Still, that wasn't very nice but
- 1:59:53Michael cares.com is very nice. You should go check that out and
- 1:59:57really is great your athletes and for the posters David, you
- 2:00:01talked about that, I'd go to Ando cares, not calm and check
- 2:00:04that out there and if they don't have the button or something to
- 2:00:07get it, I'm sure there's an email for you to go.
- 2:00:09Check it out there. So scoot on in here, we're doing
- 2:00:11like, airplane style, man. We're getting close and
- 2:00:13personal. We know what, we know each
- 2:00:14other. Now, we got another Gill
- 2:00:17Athletics connections along here, which if you've been
- 2:00:19paying attention, you know what that means?
- 2:00:20He doesn't know yet. I don't think so.
- 2:00:22We'll see you here at the end. Introduce yourself here to our
- 2:00:24listeners. I'm just feeling and you are
- 2:00:28most famous for the straight room house.
- 2:00:34And I believe that subject to a little bit later.
- 2:00:37So, let's start with what are you doing here at the
- 2:00:40convention? What are like, the things that
- 2:00:42you are, like, not miss you? You're not missing symposiums.
- 2:00:45I like learning more stuff about ready.
- 2:00:47So, who's the one that you circled?
- 2:00:48Like, I ain't missing this one. No, you go.
- 2:00:53I'm going to school. You're gonna be on this thing.
- 2:01:03those are odds and I would put first year,
- 2:01:48Last video on the pie crust looks like a first time to get
- 2:01:51to know each other. Anything a little nerve-wracking
- 2:01:53because you're spilling your guts to a stranger that look
- 2:01:56like they were best friends. Now, what do you remember the
- 2:01:58most about the the podcast? Not necessarily maybe like a
- 2:02:02story told her anything like that but the apps like after it
- 2:02:05published was really kind of cool story of people.
- 2:02:18I don't think so. We're going to move right on to
- 2:02:20our next subject. That's a really you answer me
- 2:02:46quickly that's a well-thought-out answer.
- 2:02:48I don't want with internet because I'm shallow you have
- 2:02:51Apartments which is very true. In with housing costs, didn't
- 2:02:57like boats, go by hell in the down payment.
- 2:03:01Those really well hot out, you know, different you'd have a
- 2:03:05whole different answer. Okay, before we sign off though,
- 2:03:08I do want to say, you know, because I talked about something
- 2:03:10that you're famous for, and I've made at how that the shades and
- 2:03:14all that. But you also are famous for at
- 2:03:17least in my world. We hang out a lot on Twitter.
- 2:03:20Right? Together is how to put this,
- 2:03:23you're kind of a nose. No, pull the punches kind of
- 2:03:26guy. You're the kind of guy that'll
- 2:03:27make a post and say, hey, sorry, not sorry.
- 2:03:29Yeah, it's always about things that are very pertinent to our
- 2:03:32sport. It's not off the wall crazy.
- 2:03:35Like was this guy thinking about it's like, hey, you know, you
- 2:03:38need to step up and do here, sorrynotsorry.
- 2:03:39Hey, if you want to scholarship well then you better.
- 2:03:41Do this attitude come from push back, but what keeps you kind of
- 2:03:54True within 40, North of your True, North York.
- 2:03:57That's who you are. So how do you continue moving
- 2:03:59forward it and who you are? I like being different from
- 2:04:02anybody else feel that strongly about it.
- 2:04:13Do you ever find positive? I know you do.
- 2:04:16But what has been the most positive from them?
- 2:04:20What? People come to the same way or I
- 2:04:22want to say, yeah. Yeah, I was thinking and you
- 2:04:28tell me if this is true, in your case, people who become your
- 2:04:32friends are really friends because what you tell him
- 2:04:36warts-and-all here. So we be ready for it if you
- 2:04:39don't like them then okay, you don't be friends with them.
- 2:04:43So as we end here another 60 seconds or so, what are you most
- 2:04:47excited for in 2023 for track and field?
- 2:04:49From Fort Scott, we have a great Freshman Class coming in with us
- 2:04:53off. Was getting better.
- 2:04:54Helping I think we don't have to repeat in English.
- 2:04:57And so that's again first time in school history, we're looking
- 2:05:00to be original Power or just Barton felt that you didn't say
- 2:05:09no, the old Neosho counties. We weren't we weren't Thank you
- 2:05:20so much for being here. I appreciate you gonna do great
- 2:05:23and get another okay, hold on because I can't forget this.
- 2:05:28I keep forgetting that. So you're an Alum with the
- 2:05:31podcast. Thanks again for being on the
- 2:05:33show. It was a grueling drilling two
- 2:05:36hours. You know, you have to go through
- 2:05:37your whole history and your whole story and you were so
- 2:05:40patient. You did a great job there.
- 2:05:42So for the alums of the podcast for tonight, only, I'm allowing
- 2:05:46you to flip the script and you get to ask me one question.
- 2:05:50Your superhero will be. I just watched what kind of
- 2:05:55forever and it was really good, man.
- 2:05:59Yeah, but I feel like there's an obvious answer that I'm just
- 2:06:11missing. I'm gonna go with no, that
- 2:06:14Spiderman was kind of cool like the strength and I don't think I
- 2:06:18could fly around like that, you know, I probably be The.
- 2:06:28I don't know why anybody would stop me.
- 2:06:42I feel like most people would be pretty nice, but he was pretty
- 2:06:44mean with what we were doing there and how we just flip the
- 2:06:49script in? Hey, so it is 705, the fish Ali,
- 2:06:52we said 27, but we are going to keep going.
- 2:06:54And as long as there are people out here that want to be on the
- 2:06:56show, we're going to keep going until there are no more until
- 2:06:597:45 because that's where I'm going to dinner.
- 2:07:02I'm kind of hungry guy here, right?
- 2:07:04All right, here goes herself to the listeners here today.
- 2:07:11We want to hear you. Yeah, we're doing airplane
- 2:07:13style, man. We gonna get up in here, man,
- 2:07:15Michael. So Michael, this is your second
- 2:07:18time here at the convention. Now, you kind of know what to
- 2:07:21expect last year. You kind of, like, no eyes and
- 2:07:24know what you're doing and what to expect.
- 2:07:27Now, you know what to expect and you're thinking, what are you
- 2:07:30most looking forward to here at the convention?
- 2:07:32This year, the biggest thing I'm looking forward to this.
- 2:07:35Can we choose more? So making were connections
- 2:07:39selling because I do enjoy. Symposiums, and learning and
- 2:07:42refreshing, especially those homes will be like personality
- 2:07:50based out of tree math, but the connections part of its not.
- 2:08:07Different perspectives. So how do you as a young person
- 2:08:11in this profession? What's your attack mode for
- 2:08:16networking? How's your style?
- 2:08:19These think we've come across and try to be.
- 2:08:25This is going to be professional to explain, but if you're
- 2:08:29yourself and put yourself in a position to be seen in a way
- 2:08:34that others can write, I got non-traditional.
- 2:08:39But good thing about it is that you put yourself out there who
- 2:08:42are gonna expect some of this switch here and your different
- 2:08:48way over here, we'll do my really getting what's your
- 2:08:51style. Like if you see a coach out
- 2:08:53there that you want to talk to, you just go right up to him or
- 2:08:55do you wait till there's a crowd?
- 2:08:56It kind of sneaks up in there and start laughing like it's a
- 2:08:58joke. It's kind of your go-to there.
- 2:09:01Go to I'm just walking I don't mind walking up and have the
- 2:09:05conversation on that specifically have a specific
- 2:09:08question that kind of sticks out of my mind.
- 2:09:09But the question I posed that question first.
- 2:09:13Of course, immigrants was really a question or about who I am.
- 2:09:35I felt very comfortable last year coming right up to me and
- 2:09:37we kind of started out the base. I was like, I know this guy, the
- 2:09:40ex kind of bird me, where's like, they do I know this guy.
- 2:09:42The real was the first time we met I promise, but, you know,
- 2:09:45you just had such that I kind of warming personality that was
- 2:09:48just like, oh, man, I feel like I know this, dude.
- 2:09:50Well, let's see how well we do know you have got 100 random
- 2:09:52questions here, numbered 1 through 100, only Part of the
- 2:09:55destiny. You get to do is you get to pick
- 2:09:57the number, okay, I mean numbers 1 through 100.
- 2:10:00Okay, let's do that. Was my high school, football.
- 2:10:17Let's talk sports. What's your favorite sport
- 2:10:19outside? I would say lately volleyball is
- 2:10:25grown on me. Yeah.
- 2:10:26Is that right in volleyball? We had to school.
- 2:10:32A lot of fun College. Yeah, and be there for years.
- 2:10:35We have men's volleyball. And so rare.
- 2:10:39Wow, 12. Those events were unbelievable.
- 2:10:43You have nice programs and computer very well.
- 2:10:53Yes in general. Yeah so being that energy and
- 2:10:56seeing it it's a cool sport. I became friends.
- 2:11:01Where would school choice University would be a women's
- 2:11:04team there and just learned how to play, you know, not quite
- 2:11:07what, you know, the ins and outs of the sport.
- 2:11:09It's a really, really cool sport like a rabbit's up here today.
- 2:11:12What are you looking forward to the most in the 2023 track
- 2:11:16season? I am looking for Growing our
- 2:11:24family one on the Falcon family. And big thing is bringing in
- 2:11:30Works generally excited, Growers that want to be part of looking
- 2:11:35forward to a big season from the throwers I do have now.

- 2:12:09Thanks man. Yeah, Micah again just what a
- 2:12:13great person, man, just really made me feel like I knew him
- 2:12:17forever last year. It was super excited to see him
- 2:12:19again here in 2022. We're live here in Denver

- 2:12:49As I don't see, anybody kind of chomping at the bit to join us
- 2:12:54other than just a couple of minutes here.

- 2:13:45We're at Bill appendix or maybe Bill up.
- 2:13:47Alex. 1918, not real sure. All right.
- 2:13:50We're getting ready here for our next guest.
- 2:13:52I knew I had at least one more person that would sit in the hot
- 2:13:55seat. Whereas today here man put your
- 2:13:57headphones on scoot on out. We're doing an airplane style,
- 2:13:59man, under you ain't shot, introduce yourself to our
- 2:14:02audience here tonight. Hey guys, how you doing?
- 2:14:04I'm Jake Wilkes. Here for Firefly recovery.
- 2:14:07We are recovery device. Mainly used to keep the legs
- 2:14:10fresh. It's pretty important track and
- 2:14:12field. So tell me.
- 2:14:13What does that mean? What does fire is that a
- 2:14:17treadmill? Is it a drink?
- 2:14:18What is Firefox? So fireflies are wearable
- 2:14:21technology. Talk about it is basically enemy
- 2:14:23as the by switch the stem, okay? Okay.
- 2:14:26It was actually developed the medical device.
- 2:14:29The medical versions called the echo.
- 2:14:31Okay, yep, and fireflies. Just be over the counter version
- 2:14:34of the technology. But the technology is actually
- 2:14:36developed to displace compression boots in the surgery
- 2:14:39centers as a lot of times when patients have lower extremity
- 2:14:43surgery, they're sent home with SCB sleeves or IPC sleeves which
- 2:14:47are just being bad at compression device.
- 2:14:49They're sitting home with those devices because it's going to
- 2:14:51help prevent blood clots and reduce swelling.
- 2:14:54Post-surgery the issue in the medical space is that most
- 2:14:57people don't want to be stuck in compression.
- 2:14:58Boots for 24 hours post-surgery. Sure.
- 2:15:01So our device was developed to help provide a better patient.
- 2:15:05In the option, that was more, we're voting on the go easy to
- 2:15:10use. The science behind is basically
- 2:15:12by stimulating What's called the corona nerve.
- 2:15:14Nerve starts. The top of it, goes down to the
- 2:15:16toes, right? When you comfortably stimulate
- 2:15:18that nerve, it calls your foot to flutter, or to dance.
- 2:15:21So we start getting the sort of foot to, okay.
- 2:15:23And that foot took the mechanic of moving your foot actually
- 2:15:26moves blood back to the heart similar to walking.
- 2:15:29So clinical research shows that by stimulating the peroneal
- 2:15:32nerve with our technology. It's called the unfolds
- 2:15:35basically. The patent on the stem that runs
- 2:15:38the Firefly together. When we stimulate that nerve, it
- 2:15:40actually increases load show, many blood flow from Hip To Toe,
- 2:15:44four hundred percent compared to compression which is 117 and
- 2:15:48I'll assume that blood flow is pretty important for track and
- 2:15:51field. At least that flows good.
- 2:15:53I mean I asked the real easy softball questions to attain
- 2:15:56what flow is the key from sleeping nutrition.
- 2:15:59Obvious treasure which hopefully your college athletes have that.
- 2:16:03They usually don't, they know that there's Morning and do the
- 2:16:08good thing about this technology that we have.
- 2:16:11And you know, I played running back in college.
- 2:16:14So understood school. I was at Stanford University.
- 2:16:16Go, Bulldogs, do not go Bulldogs.
- 2:16:19No, no. Botox.
- 2:16:20I want to Troy University. Okay.
- 2:16:21Okay. We have the greatest robberies
- 2:16:24that we don't, but, you know, being in the same state not
- 2:16:28being able to offer, still, okay.
- 2:16:30Do you have any children? I have a six-month-old.
- 2:16:32What it boiled girl. It's a boy.
- 2:16:34What's your name them? His name is Kay.
- 2:16:35Amen. Okay yeah.
- 2:16:37So I have a just turned 12 year old.
- 2:16:39Guess what? His name is Troy?
- 2:16:41Yes. I feel like I'm the better from
- 2:16:44my school. I'm just saying, I can't make my
- 2:16:46son save, Sam Ford and your last name Sanford, Wilkes to that.
- 2:16:52Actually it's not too late to say six months old.
- 2:16:56Yeah, well no you can change it. I'm sure after we're done here,
- 2:16:58call call mom, let's get that done.
- 2:17:01But no Sanford. Great school honestly and really
- 2:17:06Really good football team. Yeah, it's a great sin.
- 2:17:09Maybe maybe, duh, maybe the most beautiful campus, there is an
- 2:17:14amazing, can't amazing campus. Amazing, professors amazing
- 2:17:17Sports. At a great time there.
- 2:17:19Loved it, our track and field programs, obviously really got
- 2:17:23it and it's been fun now my a lot of the same for sports use
- 2:17:28modern technology. So it's funny if that so tell me
- 2:17:31more about that Jake you said your technology.
- 2:17:33How are you are? Technically, has your how are
- 2:17:35you? And the Company we're headed
- 2:17:36from you joined. Yes, I was employee number 14
- 2:17:39years ago. So our founder actually brought
- 2:17:42the medical version of the technology to the US.
- 2:17:45Okay? Became the sole distributor for
- 2:17:47the gecko, Anthony gen. Ed's our founder.
- 2:17:49He's been in the medical distribution space for about 27
- 2:17:51years. He's the one that kind of found
- 2:17:53the need for more wearable portable option for his patients
- 2:17:57because they were complaining so much about wearing compression
- 2:18:00post-surgery, right? So our technology is about the
- 2:18:02size of a wristwatch, so sales going to ask Michelle.
- 2:18:05Yeah. It's basically looks like a
- 2:18:07sticker that you put it right around the knee, okay?
- 2:18:09That's Tim will stimulate the nerve and that's what creates
- 2:18:12the systemic blood flow. So, instead of passively if
- 2:18:16anybody's familiar with the impression, usually that's going
- 2:18:18to Tech recovery, polymer body. Any type of compression do
- 2:18:22that's massaging and squeezing that blood to get that one bad.
- 2:18:25If you're actually putting action into we're actively and
- 2:18:28dynamically moving body but use your body's own mechanic.
- 2:18:31So the main way will be used by our athletes and so when you're
- 2:18:34flying and you're traveling on buses These are really easy to
- 2:18:37buy so you can pack 50 pairs in a duffel bag.
- 2:18:41Have their own unanimous. It's wearable is reusable, or is
- 2:18:44it like Advantage? Get a box of eggs.
- 2:18:46It's reusable. So it's got a nice of gel you
- 2:18:49just take that on and off your leg.
- 2:18:50Each treatment, most of our athletes will wear for about one
- 2:18:53to four hours because our technology is patented for the
- 2:18:56nervous system. Unlike other traditional muscle
- 2:18:59stems, you don't have to worry about muscular fatigue or
- 2:19:02stimuli. Yeah.
- 2:19:04So it's a really easy, you know, I guess going back to the
- 2:19:07athlete standpoint. It's Atlas recovery tool that
- 2:19:10you can use on the go. Don't have to be sitting in a
- 2:19:12booth or sitting. In a chair, you can actually be
- 2:19:14mobile, you doing things. I'm so a lot of our track and
- 2:19:16field programs, especially in CA I know Dustin Williams at BYU,
- 2:19:21could for the mind, they're big Believers in a great amazing
- 2:19:25guy. A couple of great programs have
- 2:19:27really found tremendous benefit and Avonlea.
- 2:19:30On the go tool that athletes can utilize in and outside of the
- 2:19:34athletic training room. I think there's a need for
- 2:19:37athletes recovering more than just one treatment a week in the
- 2:19:40odds. During so, especially for
- 2:19:42runners that are always fatigued, just an easy quick way
- 2:19:46to flush the body and get reaction to blood.
- 2:19:49Let's go. So, besides being here at the
- 2:19:51University consistency, condition people can go see the
- 2:19:54booth. Maybe we could try it out.
- 2:19:55We are for our listeners, and this is going to be on podcast
- 2:19:57throughout the year 2023. Where can people find out more
- 2:20:00about fire? Yeah, our website is very good.
- 2:20:02Resource is just www.recoverymonth.gov fly.com.
- 2:20:06Recovery Firefly.com, Instagram page is a fantastic.
- 2:20:11Source, most of the Instagram page is filled with, you know,
- 2:20:14our athletes and our athletic trainers, and our sports teams,
- 2:20:18that also provide a lot of good applications of use and provide
- 2:20:23a good visual. Because I know when you're just
- 2:20:25listening to a podcast, sure picture what it is like but
- 2:20:28usually if you go to our website our Instagram is pretty simple
- 2:20:32to find the my email. If anyone wants to contact me
- 2:20:35directly as Jake at recovery, Firefly do covering fire, fly
- 2:20:39all one word, no dashes. It's all that kind of stuff.
- 2:20:41Super easy. Thanks for doing that.
- 2:20:43By the way, the covering Firefly.com.
- 2:20:45That's right. Hello brother man.
- 2:20:46Thanks for being on the show today and every one of those
- 2:20:48selfies. Thanks a lot.
- 2:20:54So much for being here man. I appreciate you so much.
- 2:20:56Appreciate the rest of the show. Thank you, sir.
- 2:20:59That sounds like a great resource their recovery
- 2:21:01Firefly.com and I like that. And so I maybe check it out.
- 2:21:06Maybe it's something for your athletes and maybe, maybe not.
- 2:21:09I don't know, but you should check it out.
- 2:21:11So you know yourself and know your athletes to know everything
- 2:21:15that's available out there to you.
- 2:21:17So we said we were stopping at 7:00 we can stop in at 7:00.
- 2:21:20Now when you have VIPs like this in the house, we got to get them
- 2:21:25on the podcast here Mike you gotta get in the seat for five
- 2:21:27minutes. You have to, you have to five
- 2:21:31minutes with him and then you come in, let me get five minutes
- 2:21:33and then you come in, five minutes, love this guy.
- 2:21:37That that's a real V. My David.
- 2:22:12He's really famous for what I was fishing for my unofficial
- 2:22:17alma mater, Mississippi State University, which, by the way,
- 2:22:20if you're listening right now, I know coach Leach, who I'm not a
- 2:22:23big fan of necessarily to be real frankly, but he's having
- 2:22:27health issues. Very, very seriously.
- 2:22:29So just shout out and prayers to coach Leach and his family, and
- 2:22:34just praying for health and healing for for him.
- 2:22:39But luckily, you're healthy and Here man.
- 2:22:40So tell us what are you? This is your second years.
- 2:22:43Yeah thank you. So you know the first year you
- 2:22:45kind of bright-eyed bushy-tailed you don't know what's going on
- 2:22:47now. Your we kind of understand the
- 2:22:49lame the way the way and what goes on here?
- 2:22:51What are you looking forward to the most this week here at the
- 2:22:54convention this week? I'm really looking forward to
- 2:22:57just taking the time just to continue to resolidify those
- 2:23:00relationships that I've built last year.
- 2:23:02It's already have not been here for not even two hours.
- 2:23:03Now, I'm walking down some right?
- 2:23:05And he just said he was famous. Said, you were famous.
- 2:23:09You say it, but I'm just Just trying to live in my life.
- 2:23:11Oh no. He's good to see coaches that I
- 2:23:13met last year. Feels like that in a really good
- 2:23:15place to be able to build those conditions.
- 2:23:17The learning that takes place here, be phenomenal.
- 2:23:20Just let the Symposium shortly ago but I'm really which one the
- 2:23:23high don't suppose you put you on the spot that I'm sorry but
- 2:23:32no, I know this face sometimes. Go as far as coaching and I feel
- 2:23:42like I have got a pretty solid general idea of like most of
- 2:23:45these informed the Catholic and everything like that but it's
- 2:23:49certain cues are citizens that someone else might say I might
- 2:23:53need something. Something something I heard in
- 2:23:55there just now that I was like, oh, I never looked at it in that
- 2:23:59way. He mentioned running the curve
- 2:24:02cursing. Putting pressure gives the
- 2:24:04ground to create leads them, like leaning your body to do
- 2:24:08small things like that is sort of Eh I'm looking to pick up
- 2:24:11here, huge thing. We all learn a little
- 2:24:13differently, right? So if you try to just go your
- 2:24:15one way when you have athletes that have no clue and there's
- 2:24:18gonna be friction. So to be able to have an
- 2:24:20inventory of cues. It's pretty vital because I'm an
- 2:24:24r and a little bit of fun here. I've got 100 random questions,
- 2:24:27right? You get to pick the number one
- 2:24:29through 122 y22 High School football, knows everybody.
- 2:24:33It's every dudes number is there.
- 2:25:07He's like, I don't seem like these rabbits you can see
- 2:25:10through a wall like carrots all the time, right?
- 2:25:13At least. That's what the cartoons told me
- 2:25:14on Saturday morning. She cares.
- 2:25:15What are you looking forward to the most this 2023 track and
- 2:25:18field season? The question cooking on spotless
- 2:25:22always biggest thing I'm looking forward.
- 2:25:23I was gonna name the podcast to put you on the spot podcast.
- 2:25:25I wanted connections instead what you inspire year is to just
- 2:25:32continue seeing my athletes improve as cliche as it sounds.
- 2:25:35It's very precious always I feel like that's a good indicator of
- 2:25:40coaching ability, as well as for them for them feel good about
- 2:25:43themselves, but if you're improving, athletically, I'm
- 2:25:48looking forward to seeing it. But I'm also speaking into
- 2:25:51existence. Last year's champion,
- 2:26:18I really thank you so much for being so appreciate your
- 2:26:21holidays and yeah, absolutely. Absolutely, I'll be here all
- 2:26:23week. I'm here all week, baby, not
- 2:26:25live all week, but we here all week.
- 2:26:30Hate. So not only track and field
- 2:26:32coach has and directors of relays.
- 2:26:35We have the director of Drake Relays and director of Ops of KU
- 2:26:39relays here on the podcast. What we also have this is the
- 2:26:42only one we've had so far, but I we got the best one, don't tell
- 2:26:46anybody else around. This is a recorded, right?
- 2:26:49Introduce yourself here to our audience today?
- 2:26:51Yeah, audience. My name is Cody Ross.
- 2:26:52Check currently serve as the Director of operations over the
- 2:26:55University of nebraska-lincoln little bit about myself came
- 2:26:58from Wichita State. I was Actually teacher, I was an
- 2:27:00elementary education teacher for two years, I realized I missed
- 2:27:03the world. The track that led to an
- 2:27:05internship University of Alaska, led to Wichita State for a year.
- 2:27:09Wichita State led to the University of Notre, Dame out
- 2:27:11there for four and a half. Gary Pepin about 11 months ago
- 2:27:15called and said, you want to come home, my wife overheard,
- 2:27:17the phone call and we move those done deal.
- 2:27:19Yeah, it's gonna be soon. As my wife said, we're very
- 2:27:25familiar with A pretty good inside, you will check the
- 2:27:31field. Coach doesn't high school
- 2:27:33college level, you just the kind of the 30,000 foot.
- 2:27:36Level is a director of Ops 2. I do everything I can to make
- 2:27:41the head coach and it's just the coach's job Caesar.
- 2:27:43Okay. You know, I always say the same
- 2:27:45thing when I have recruits come in and I'm talking to the family
- 2:27:47and go, you're trusting your son or daughter to the University of
- 2:27:51Nebraska University and our aim. I said it's my job and a way to
- 2:27:55try to be their parent. I'm always gonna make sure your
- 2:27:57son or daughter has a roof over their head food in their mouth
- 2:27:59closed on their back in a safe way to get home to and from
- 2:28:03home. And so what is if you get when
- 2:28:08you come into the office each day, there's three things on the
- 2:28:11top of your list every day. What do those look like right
- 2:28:13now? This time of year I'm looking at
- 2:28:15home eat management. Okay.
- 2:28:16Control you guys host a lot of me, we do we host morose and
- 2:28:19five in door meets This indoor season will be ready in 25 New
- 2:28:27Management. First thing I'm doing I'm
- 2:28:28looking at team travel and third thing, I'm doing is we can share
- 2:28:31our budget, right? And why did you go into This
- 2:28:35realm of track and field versus the one, where the most familiar
- 2:28:38with the coaching. Yeah.
- 2:28:39So I had a great opportunity to ask questions where I graduated
- 2:28:41from. Ted allowed me to be a student
- 2:28:43volunteer and love them for the opportunity, but what I love
- 2:28:46through the opportunity is he. Let me run meet, he had me take
- 2:28:50a large role in contacting high schools and bringing that in and
- 2:28:54I instantly fell in love with the meat management side of
- 2:28:57things. And the neverland, Nebraska
- 2:29:00definitions. Other spectrum and world.
- 2:29:12Yes. You have the coaches that you
- 2:29:13see there the Forefront but when it comes to operations it was
- 2:29:17just a small community. I didn't know what they were
- 2:29:19doing and didn't L really allowed me to come and take a
- 2:29:21look what she's doing and I climb on ya.
- 2:29:24I love when people find their passion, we're I believe we're
- 2:29:27all built for one thing and it's very rare when we actually find
- 2:29:31that. One thing it really is, we go
- 2:29:32through our lives and different jobs in its Fun and and and
- 2:29:37create value. But once in a while, we'd line
- 2:29:40up with our true calling, and it's something special and
- 2:29:44having worked with you at a couple different places.
- 2:29:45Now that your it man, you, whether it's luck or, you know,
- 2:29:51God's hand pushing you over here over here, man.
- 2:29:52You're in the right place for you, your family, and selfishly
- 2:29:57for our school. Yeah.
- 2:29:58You look at, you know, I was a junior, high teacher and I would
- 2:30:01have that was 78 years ago. If you told me, I'd be sitting
- 2:30:04next to my Cunningham and Denver Colorado at the convention out
- 2:30:08and said you're crazy, right? Like you said I'm a firm
- 2:30:11believer and there's every person has a calling in life in
- 2:30:14there and there's a true Direction That's not how it
- 2:30:17happens. Who knows you know I was right.
- 2:30:19Yeah believer that God was involved in that process.
- 2:30:23Well we're gonna see how happy you are.
- 2:30:25I've got 100 random questions, 1 through 100.
- 2:30:28You get to pick the number. We will go 3434 134.
- 2:30:34Sorry, Katie my wife, that was my first crushes basketball
- 2:30:37hour. Number 34 I know comment number
- 2:30:4334 I'm not bored yet. What is your must-have family
- 2:30:46friend game here in the friends over, you know, you get together
- 2:30:51for the holidays. What's the must-have game?
- 2:30:53We are putting on the table, we are playing right now.
- 2:30:56My little sister made it for me is called aggregate aggravation.
- 2:30:58So it's a, it's a marble game with dice.
- 2:31:01And what you got to do is you got to roll one or six, get out
- 2:31:03of your house, okay? And work your way around the
- 2:31:05board. So let's say you're sitting this
- 2:31:07spot. I roll 3 and I land on you, I
- 2:31:09send you back to your House. Well and it's all those things.
- 2:31:11Whether it's my family, my in-laws friends coming over.
- 2:31:14It's the first thing on the table, any board flipping know,
- 2:31:18there's rage quitting there's some select words whenever she's
- 2:31:21getting real close. He kind of but I haven't seen a
- 2:31:27tell us as we wrap up here. I have the great opportunity
- 2:31:36right now to be working with the brand new staff coach Justin
- 2:31:38st.clair, interim, head coach University of Nebraska.
- 2:31:41He's in his first role as a head coach, and I'm looking forward
- 2:31:44to. We've got a great group of young
- 2:31:46men and women at University, just as you would a great job as
- 2:31:49a leader, and he's built a great staff to work with.
- 2:31:52And so I'm looking forward to seeing what that is as well as
- 2:31:54there's some there's some new track meets and new locations
- 2:31:57that I've ever visited that addressing I've become friends
- 2:32:00with Darren Flint mother of Amelia flint.
- 2:32:03And so he and I have Kind of been talking behind the scenes
- 2:32:06as it was all going down. And we were talking about it.
- 2:32:09Last night was not only how cool because, first of all, I just
- 2:32:12think everything of Justin said, Claire to be real Frank with you
- 2:32:15but you know, Amelia's family parents met at Nebraska and I
- 2:32:19was like, come on man. That's what a cool Legacy to
- 2:32:23build and keep building. There was a neat picture.
- 2:32:25Amelia postage, my softening it today and it was her dad and his
- 2:32:28Nebraska letter jacket. And I'm like, holy smokes.
- 2:32:31That's just, that's cool. Survey her dad's a sharp dude.
- 2:32:35Imagine you would really is a great athlete and very smart,
- 2:32:37Darren's, a great sharp. Dude, I haven't that Mommy.
- 2:32:39I can only imagine that moms one.
- 2:32:41Who runs the ship over here. I gotta thank.
- 2:32:43And then you got to look at the talent that their daughter have
- 2:32:45both of those both mom and dad were talented.
- 2:32:47Don't forget son, Ian's round the back.
- 2:32:49Yeah. All right, he wouldn't hate.
- 2:32:51Let's get a selfie to into an. Thank you so much.
- 2:32:52Cody May appreciate you being here on the live, taping of the
- 2:32:55Gulf of the connections project. Let's see if we have Mike J.
- 2:33:02Yeah, let's get this. We this is a real treat for Or
- 2:33:04me for a couple of reasons. One, this guy is the voice of
- 2:33:09tracking feel this. This setup might not be good
- 2:33:12enough for him. He may give me tips on how to
- 2:33:15record here because this is the real voice of track and field
- 2:33:20right here, live at the Denver Colorado, used, Tipsy City a
- 2:33:242022 convention and this was completely unplanned.
- 2:33:27I had no idea this was going to happen.
- 2:33:28So, I'm just overwhelmed that here, please introduce yourself
- 2:33:31to the audience. I'll show my name's Mike J from
- 2:33:33Iowa and yeah. I'm tickled to death to be here.
- 2:33:36I was invited by Sam seems from down with the NCAA cross country
- 2:33:40meet, and then, of course, the Drake Relays are representing
- 2:33:43the Symposium. So just doing some intros and
- 2:33:46helping out with the wards and and living the High Life man.
- 2:33:49This has been on my bucket list to come to this but I had no
- 2:33:52reason to come. Yeah, I was never High School
- 2:33:54coach, never a college coach and haven't coach for two years but
- 2:33:58I just like to hang her up. Coaches, are good people.
- 2:34:00Amen it all. So it's it worked out.
- 2:34:04It's awesome. And you know, like there's a lot
- 2:34:06of reasons I like you one. Not only your skill set as far
- 2:34:10as what you do is the announcer Drake, Relays and other meats
- 2:34:13and things like that. That's amazing.
- 2:34:14It's kind of cool. Unique talent, right?
- 2:34:16I don't know that I can have. Anybody else to come on that.
- 2:34:18Does this? Well Blake?
- 2:34:19I'd like to start off. He just did meet at Spokane.
- 2:34:21Yeah. You also run an amazing
- 2:34:26seriously charity event. I want to be around Nation.
- 2:34:28Have been founded. Yeah.
- 2:34:30Young people from your heart. That is just really, really
- 2:34:34amazing. And then you host your own
- 2:34:36podcast which is cool. I love that.
- 2:34:38But one of the things that I really like I really like Niche.
- 2:34:41Right. And so you know track is its own
- 2:34:43use, right? You pull baltar's?
- 2:34:45That's kind of nice here but there are a select few people
- 2:34:48out there that Niche down to their state track and field and
- 2:34:52you are I love how you introduce yourself by Jay from Iowa.
- 2:34:56You are mr. Iowa, when it comes to the
- 2:34:59history of the sport in the state advocating for the
- 2:35:03athletes and coaches. Has always blown away.
- 2:35:06I can't imagine what kind of database you have when a meat
- 2:35:08goes off at the Alabama Invitational and you're like, so
- 2:35:11and so that went to Booneville high school and this high
- 2:35:13school. And this used to coach at Uni, I
- 2:35:16just love that aspect files like modify models from memory and
- 2:35:19hopefully that will stick with me for a while, but it's just, I
- 2:35:25lucked out my car. Just tell you the back story of
- 2:35:271975. I was a sophomore in high
- 2:35:29school. I tell people, I had to work my
- 2:35:31butt off to be mediocre and but Even dreamed about qualifying to
- 2:35:36the Drake, Relays for the steamed meat, but my small town
- 2:35:40of Columbus Junction, 1500 people.
- 2:35:43And my head coach said, hey we've got an extra ticket you
- 2:35:45want to go so what the Drake with the state in the spring?
- 2:35:48And I've never missed either one since 1975 and I credit my High
- 2:35:52School coaches for instilling a love of the sport, gotten to the
- 2:35:56relays and 75 and Jim Duncan on the mic and I remember telling
- 2:36:00coach pretty I'm going to do this someday and that's really
- 2:36:04so I Have and it's just been, you know, and we've got really
- 2:36:08good kids in Iowa, you know, we're and we understand that you
- 2:36:13don't you're not going to get a lot of recruits from Florida,
- 2:36:16Texas. And and that's okay.
- 2:36:17But we'll get enough of them to do blend in with the Iowa kids.
- 2:36:21And, and most of the good programs in Iowa.
- 2:36:25Well, regardless of the sport, they get three-star.
- 2:36:29Recruit should make them a five before they graduate, you know,
- 2:36:31and they don't come in as a five and I've always loved that work
- 2:36:34ethic. And so, it's just, it's been a
- 2:36:37labor of love for me and our foundation, you know, when I
- 2:36:40coach, we always had kids that had a need.
- 2:36:43So it's, it's, I've got great supporters.
- 2:36:46I said just how rich Benoist down here on the way, you know.
- 2:36:49And he says, I'm going to send you guys some shoes to give the
- 2:36:52kids. And my favorite story is about 3
- 2:36:55weeks ago. I get a text from Jenny Simpson.
- 2:36:58Yeah, who's now, she'd been with New Balance, her entire career
- 2:37:01right now with Puma, right? She said I've got a closet full
- 2:37:04of new bow On spikes. Do you wanna come on?
- 2:37:07And so she sent me a great big box 39 pairs of spikes should
- 2:37:11signed a singlet and a pair of spikes and we raffle them off
- 2:37:15and on track to me, clap, two weeks ago, made over $800.
- 2:37:20So Mike as we wrap up to where can people go?
- 2:37:22Because there's no you blessed me with a shirt.
- 2:37:25The Trap guys? Yeah.
- 2:37:26And you know what? I get shirts from around.
- 2:37:28Have got them on. Yeah, I see everybody.
- 2:37:32And I'm not gonna lie. That you gave me was at the The
- 2:37:36Nutty come in but not. Absolute like is the most
- 2:37:39comfortable shirt, I own. I mean, I don't know what the
- 2:37:41material try, those are called tri-blend amazing.
- 2:37:44My kids and sister, dad. You just can't get an old cotton
- 2:37:46or everybody has the heart into it.
- 2:37:48So, tell us where is, this will be on the podcast.
- 2:37:51Also K3, where can we go to, for those kind of items?
- 2:37:54If we have shoes, we want to donate this.
- 2:37:55Where can we go? Crack guy, foundation.com,
- 2:37:58correct, guy, foundation.com and all kinds of drop-down menus and
- 2:38:02and one thing we're kind of proud Out of we just did it this
- 2:38:06year. For the very first time, we have
- 2:38:08track meeting posters that coaches can download and we've
- 2:38:11got oh yes all that got the bio of two outstanding former Iowa
- 2:38:15preps on there and so for don't have a track meetings going to
- 2:38:18place to fill out, where to meet what time?
- 2:38:20And lastly January 25th, we're going to wind up.
- 2:38:24We're going to get wound up. I should say our track guy
- 2:38:27speaker series events. Again, we had eight of them
- 2:38:29around the state over two years before covid, and last year, at
- 2:38:34the NCAA, Indoor Birmingham, Daniel Bryan, came up to me,
- 2:38:37said, Mike, I want to do something don't foundation.
- 2:38:39So Daniel Bryan's, going to be there January, twenty fifth
- 2:38:42grade and a couple of our paralympic athletes from Iowa,
- 2:38:46and we've got a All-American decathlete from the University
- 2:38:48of Iowa. Austin West.
- 2:38:50And he and Dan are going to close the show with a 45-minute
- 2:38:53conversation between America. One of America's one of the
- 2:38:56world's best ever Olympic gold medalist talking to an
- 2:38:59up-and-comer. So it'll be fun.
- 2:39:01So track guy foundation.com you got to go their support.
- 2:39:04He's doing great things and like I'm just so thankful.
- 2:39:07We man, thank you. Thank you for what you do for
- 2:39:09our sport. I look forward to your tweets
- 2:39:11every day. I really do is get a lot that I
- 2:39:13mean that we get to do a selfie before we okay take out.
- 2:39:15Let's do it. Mike, thank you so much you bet.
- 2:39:18Thank you, Mike. Hey we're going to wrap up here
- 2:39:21tonight but before we do, I'm going to try to get each one of
- 2:39:27my teammates man. The I don't do anything without
- 2:39:29my teammates and I've got three great ones actually had five
- 2:39:32year but two of them broke out there.
- 2:39:34Probably Getting dinner for us is what they're probably do.
- 2:39:36And oh yeah, they said they have a table.
- 2:39:38Okay, good. This goes through 7:45 though.
- 2:39:41I so, you know, it's my boss. I get to go out.
- 2:39:45Hey, so I just wanted to kind of quickly highlight as we wrap up
- 2:39:48tonight. You know, we've had some amazing
- 2:39:50coaches. We kind of started doing Drake
- 2:39:51Relays a little bit ended on the Drake Relays with my Jay was
- 2:39:54here but but we you know what you think that we do here scoot
- 2:39:59over, he's do not get the Hansen's.
- 2:40:01I kept touching like it up here. We have some amazing teammates
- 2:40:04here and this is kind of I don't want to belittle this guy and
- 2:40:07save my right-hand man. But what I mean by that is this
- 2:40:09is the guy who really does it all to be real Frank with you,
- 2:40:12Scott Phelps, he oversees our sales team or our Gil, stock
- 2:40:16divisions all the pits poles, hurdles and implements things
- 2:40:18like that. So Scott introduce yourself and
- 2:40:20I'm just gonna ask you a couple of fun questions.
- 2:40:22Sure. Yeah.
- 2:40:23My name is Scott Phelps. I've worked at Gill going on
- 2:40:25five years. Now was a coach for eight years
- 2:40:29of college level and started as a sales rep.
- 2:40:32And now we kind of have a In everything at gil.
- 2:40:35He runs the show. Let's not be too.
- 2:40:37He will say that. But I will, and I can't.
- 2:40:39And you were a really good. I can say that because I'm no
- 2:40:43monkey are half mile, ER, for the University of Illinois and
- 2:40:46you're from the area. And when coached at places like
- 2:40:49Dartmouth and Northeastern and Texas, what did it mean?
- 2:40:53You know as you were coming out of coaching and moving?
- 2:40:55You got the chance to not only move back to home base but you
- 2:40:59got to stay in track and field. Was a much of a draw, was that
- 2:41:02for you? Or is it just like I'm asking
- 2:41:03you to do a job? There's a little bit of that.
- 2:41:06There's definitely a pole back to Central Illinois but staying
- 2:41:11in the sport was big. I mean I still am always going
- 2:41:13to follow track and running and things like that.
- 2:41:16So it was nice to have somebody you know, to work at a place
- 2:41:20where I can talk about tracking people move.
- 2:41:27Well, I love it man. You know, Scott you bring a
- 2:41:30whole different set of positives and advantages to our team and
- 2:41:33I'm just so thankful for you being honest.
- 2:41:35And now I'm going to have a little fun.
- 2:41:36So I've got 100 questions. 1 through 100, they're numbered 1
- 2:41:39through 100. You get to pick the number 87,
- 2:41:41y-intercept, my lucky number, not your football doesn't come
- 2:41:45up very often. That's 87.
- 2:41:47But yeah, we never. Yeah, that's true.
- 2:41:50We didn't have enough that all dudes on the podcast here
- 2:41:53tonight. Besides Jessica in every guy
- 2:41:55when they picked a number, it's their old high school football
- 2:41:58coming to a t87 or 87, right? All right.
- 2:42:01Sweet or savory. What's your favorite dessert?
- 2:42:04Cinnamon roll, if I could do just the middle part of a cinema
- 2:42:08name in not even the elderly men could be my it why is it deal
- 2:42:11talked about the inventions and things like that?
- 2:42:14That you have a whole different aspect of track and field.
- 2:42:26What are you most looking forward to in the 2023 track and
- 2:42:29field season? Yeah, well, I think everybody
- 2:42:32remembers where they were When kind of covid first happen,
- 2:42:36unfortunately? Yes I was at ncaa's in
- 2:42:40Albuquerque at the national championships and they are back
- 2:42:45in Albuquerque this March and so I am looking forward to actually
- 2:42:48having ncaa's at Albuquerque full circle.
- 2:42:52I did not even yeah that's what I'm that's true because we were
- 2:42:56there on the Tuesday and Wednesdays I think we're going
- 2:42:57to division one. Let's go let's rock it.
- 2:42:59Okay pack your stuff up and go home yep and what and then just
- 2:43:02you know it just kept getting that I'm looking for.
- 2:43:04To that too, man. That's really good.
- 2:43:06Are we get a selfie because the other two guys in here and then
- 2:43:08go eat. Okay, there we go.
- 2:43:12Scott. Thank you man.
- 2:43:12I really appreciate you so grateful for you.
- 2:43:16We got two more. I'm not I'm not gonna let him
- 2:43:18off the hook. I want you to go last actually
- 2:43:22I'm gonna get him off the hook. I'm gonna get this guy on the
- 2:43:24hook first, I'm going to end with a very special person,
- 2:43:26although this guy's special to I'm not belittling here.
- 2:43:29He likes to dress like me can see very close here going to
- 2:43:32close up here. So I'm going to introduce
- 2:43:34himself and then we'll go at it. Go ahead.
- 2:43:37Yeah. So I'm River, I'm a former pole
- 2:43:39vaulter. I still bought a little bit.
- 2:43:40You know, I gotta stay with the stay with the fun thing you
- 2:43:42love. And and so I mean sales.
- 2:43:45East side of things. And then I work a lot with the
- 2:43:47Pacer and oval holes and they questions there.
- 2:43:49So what you know, you were pole vaulter and college and you
- 2:43:53know, you're kind of almost a low-key Trek nerd but you're
- 2:43:56here attract nerd, you know, you don't exude it too much.
- 2:43:59Kind of keep you like to keep your composure there, but what
- 2:44:02was it like when you know, through the interview process
- 2:44:04coming out of college and going to work for Gila buttocks?
- 2:44:07Was it? What was it?
- 2:44:08What was there stating need about it?
- 2:44:09Or was it just like yummy I just needed a job goggles out of
- 2:44:11college. I mean I definitely like I had a
- 2:44:15A good college job to wear like I could have stayed and my
- 2:44:17college town and been at the beach threw in a walk for a
- 2:44:20while. And I wanted to do something
- 2:44:22that I would be more loving the excited to do.
- 2:44:25And so as a pole vaulter, getting to work within a track
- 2:44:27and field company was deathly, something I was very excited to
- 2:44:30that's cool man. Yeah, well we were definitely
- 2:44:31glad to have you and we're going to talk about what's up coming
- 2:44:34here in a second though. But we're gonna have a little
- 2:44:36fun. I've got a don't cheat, I've got
- 2:44:38100 questions. 1 through 100, don't cheat.
- 2:44:42This is how we got to take. So hold on.
- 2:44:44Before we go in there, I can't. Levi talked about this earlier
- 2:44:46actually with one of our past guest here.
- 2:44:48But my friend here, River went to Coastal Carolina University
- 2:44:52and as you know, from tonight and all the other podcast I try
- 2:44:55to mention it at least once show, I went to the greatest
- 2:44:58universities of Old Troy University and Troy University
- 2:45:00and Coastal Carolina University playing the championship game.
- 2:45:04Actually I'm not sure Coastal Carolina play I'm gonna tip if
- 2:45:07we draw. I think our offense played you
- 2:45:08played second half your offense, first half you a play-by-play at
- 2:45:11all. So now we're understanding how
- 2:45:13he graduated through college, use tikis, look.
- 2:45:15Up on paperwork here. 1 through 100 sir.
- 2:45:17Which, again, I'll do 50 Subs & Y, 57.
- 2:45:19I've no idea. That's the best answer with and
- 2:45:22all night. 57 sir, let's go to your hometown.
- 2:45:25Where is the spot in your hometown to eat?
- 2:45:29There isn't one barbecue joint. The pizza place.
- 2:45:34Where everybody met up at know, we're talking one.
- 2:45:37Red light towel. Yeah, but there's always, that's
- 2:45:39where some of the best food is. No.
- 2:45:42I'm trying to think. I really don't think there was
- 2:45:44the Sonic on the corner with the stoplight, nothing Waffle House.
- 2:45:48But there's a million of them. Yeah bro, friend of mine, who's
- 2:45:52at UNLV, now was complaining? Because there's no Waffle House
- 2:45:54in Las Vegas. There's one actually is in
- 2:45:56Denver. I tweeted him and said, well you
- 2:45:59up here in Denver? There's not one in Champaign.
- 2:46:00Someone needs to open one by our office.
- 2:46:02There's not one so River, you know, not to put you on the spot
- 2:46:07because it's common knowledge. You joined us a little over a
- 2:46:10year ago, and you are breaking my heart, you're leaving us to
- 2:46:14go to a real A wonderful opportunity.
- 2:46:15I really am happy and proud of you, but I just kinda wanted to
- 2:46:18get it on paper on wax here. Just say, man, I'm so proud of
- 2:46:21you, I don't like that, you're leaving, you were great.
- 2:46:25Addition to the team, you what? You created over this past year,
- 2:46:28year and a half. This will continue to live on.
- 2:46:31You know what you created is sustainability.
- 2:46:32A lot of things, man. I'm just so proud of you.
- 2:46:34I love you to death and I truly selfishly hate that you're
- 2:46:38leaving, but I'm just Uber, Uber proud of you.
- 2:46:41And what you're going to do in a bunch of other different
- 2:46:43Industries, and for your family, and Future family, man.
- 2:46:46It's going to be it's gonna be big and I can't wait to just
- 2:46:48watch the journey from the sidelines.
- 2:46:50I'm excited. I really love you death.
- 2:46:52Let's get a selfie real quick and then we're going to bring in
- 2:46:54really the this guest of the whole week that I've been
- 2:46:58waiting to get here on the podcast.
- 2:47:00He looks like he was doing some Vince.
- 2:47:02He's I think he's nervous a little bit here but that's okay.
- 2:47:05This is kind of what I do. I put people on the spot, we
- 2:47:07were going to call the podcast, the on-the-spot podcast once.
- 2:47:09But it's good for me and we're gonna put them on a spot here.
- 2:47:12So why don't you introduce yourself here to our audience
- 2:47:14today? I'm Jane.
- 2:47:16Curtin originally from Indiana and now I live in Champaign to
- 2:47:22kill for about 14 years. 14 is that right?
- 2:47:25Just about. Yeah.
- 2:47:26So I'm pushing on toward the 17th.
- 2:47:29So you weren't that far behind me?
- 2:47:31Correct. I feel like I'm the old man's
- 2:47:33always feel like I'm 20 years longer than anybody even though
- 2:47:35when we were 17 and tell us what you do at Google analytics.
- 2:47:38Yeah, I'm an R&D I dabble in a little bit of track and field
- 2:47:42stuff. I've got the track background so
- 2:47:44I Enjoy one can also work in our valuable product range.
- 2:47:49We're coming best the Portables rims backwards and whatnots and
- 2:47:54tell us a little bit about that truck background that you have.
- 2:47:56Yeah I ran my dad got me inspired got me into the sport
- 2:48:00here in for IU. Back in the day I don't think I
- 2:48:03knew that he meant for Indiana high school and then went to
- 2:48:13Valparaiso the Crusaders. Yes.
- 2:48:45One of the reasons. First of all, super glad you
- 2:48:53don't normally travel with us and so I'm super happy that
- 2:48:55you're here. One is I want to put you on the
- 2:48:57spot. You know.
- 2:48:58I like to Highlight our team, especially the ones that have
- 2:49:01tracked background. So one day I want you to be on
- 2:49:03the full podcast. You are absolutely say no.
- 2:49:05You have to come in now. But I wanted to know if they
- 2:49:06were just in case you said, yes I can.
- 2:49:08Come back so nobody said, yes, but thank you.
- 2:49:11One of the real reasons. We are unveiling, our Continuum
- 2:49:14C5 hurdle at this show and this is pretty revolutionary and you
- 2:49:20were, it takes a whole team. I know you're gonna say
- 2:49:22something, you were the leader of this.
- 2:49:24So this new hurdle you can check out our catalog or online.
- 2:49:27There's some videos on social media.
- 2:49:29If you think about when you go to move a hurdle up or down, the
- 2:49:32first thing that everybody does or at least they should do, they
- 2:49:35put their foot on that cross brace, right.
- 2:49:36Kind of to stabilize that hurdle down and then they click it up
- 2:49:3930 33 36 or whatnot or if you have RC for the ones we use it
- 2:49:43in caa's trigger and you move up, right?
- 2:49:46Well, our boss David Hodge, must think I keep telling about.
- 2:49:51You must think I'm the greatest salesman in the world pretty
- 2:49:52pricey hurdle, but the real challenge was we actually had to
- 2:49:56develop this thing and my friend here, Jim church and you were
- 2:49:58the He'd design on this. Can you talk a little bit about
- 2:50:02that process because you were creating something from scratch?
- 2:50:05There was no blueprint here all week.
- 2:50:08I'll say that kind of, was the C-4 is a tried-and-true hurdle.
- 2:50:12He's been out there for years. I hoped on the development of
- 2:50:15that as well, just behind the scenes, but we wanted to keep as
- 2:50:20much of that the same as we could just.
- 2:50:22That's, it's such a durable, durable hurdle.
- 2:50:25Say that ten times. Yeah.
- 2:50:26Right. We want to keep as much the same
- 2:50:28as we But yeah, we want to incorporate this new feature, so
- 2:50:34we actually look to the luggage industry and the telescoping
- 2:50:38handles on those luggage gets tossed and turned around all day
- 2:50:42every day, do they take some beating just like mine.
- 2:50:46So we took we bought luggage we looked at those internal
- 2:50:48mechanisms and everybody uses the same thing.
- 2:50:53So we just essentially looked at that we adapted it to fit inside
- 2:50:57of our hurdle uprights And we are hoping the yeah, have the
- 2:51:01same durability out of yeah, mechanism for.
- 2:51:05It was really fascinating. I got to be along that Journey
- 2:51:07on the sale side which means I just got them look stuff up.
- 2:51:10You know, whenever the sales guys walk in the engineers,
- 2:51:12like, holy crap, what are we doing now?
- 2:51:15But it was really interesting to see buying the luggage tearing
- 2:51:18it apart learning. Okay.
- 2:51:19Is what has happened. Okay.
- 2:51:20But now we need to do it 180 degrees.
- 2:51:23We go through this thing upside down.
- 2:51:24Oh, and by the way, we're going to have people like Trey
- 2:51:27Cunningham and Oh my gosh, darn David but David Oliver David,
- 2:51:33I'm sorry, man. I love you, man.
- 2:51:34I'm so sorry the Deo test, right?
- 2:51:36That people are going to be hitting the knocking the
- 2:51:38everliving snot and so it's going to be durable.
- 2:51:40It was really interesting to see that flip inside of the R&D
- 2:51:44mechanism and then also the testing that we do now I got to
- 2:51:47ask as the R&D guy is testing the most fun thing that you guys
- 2:51:50do it from the outside. It seems like it when you get to
- 2:51:53kind of just try to Break Stuff. Testing is fun.
- 2:51:57We do and don't want to brakes. Early on.
- 2:52:00You Want to Break Stuff so you can learn then later on, when
- 2:52:02you think you've figured everything out.
- 2:52:04Sure. It's also nerve-racking because
- 2:52:05he don't never thought about it like that.
- 2:52:07Okay, no, we fixed it down. Oh yeah, we didn't.
- 2:52:09It's one of my favorite part is the even before that.
- 2:52:13Yeah, that's cool. It was your.
