- 1:02Brown story, Nightmare for ninth Part one. This was the seventeenth episode,
- 1:07so fifth overall mystery. Let's go ahead and take a lesson Carter brown Mystery
- 1:26Adventures in Excitement and Suspense, based on the best selling novels by the slick
- 1:30storytelling sensation Carter Brown. How do you do, Ladies and gentlemen, This
- 1:53is Carter Brown to bring you another of my stories. The title this one
- 1:57is Nightmare for Night and in case that doesn't make sense to you, I'd
- 2:00better explain it. My hearer's name is Nicholas Knight. He's a private investigator
- 2:04and this is the account of one of his cases. A blend of Eastern
- 2:06West, a mixture of mayhem and mystery. So let me introduce Nicholas Knight,
- 2:09usually known as Nikki. Long have many surprises in the private eye business,
- 2:24but this was one of them. The slim, sleek, suave character
- 2:29who walked into my office and introduced himself as an Arabian sheik. I thought
- 2:32it was a gag until he produced proof. And then when he came out
- 2:36with this proposition, I thought that was a gag too. I looked at
- 2:39his black eyes and his black pointed beard, and he's perfectly cut suit and
- 2:44his perfectly dazzling smile, and thought I'd heard everything. Oh, mister Night,
- 2:47you'll seem a little taken aback. Oh that is putting it mildly.
- 2:51Me bodyguard for a hair. I appreciate it, maybe something of an unusual
- 2:53assignment for you, but I am perfectly sillious about it. The Prince al
- 2:58Zaman will be here in the city for two weeks. He has delicate negotiations
- 3:01to conduct. They concern the oil, of course, and he has brought
- 3:07four of his harem with him, the foremost beautiful, also three guards.
- 3:12But the guards know nothing of the ways of the Western world. That is
- 3:15why we think it necessary to engage a private detective as well. Ah Hi,
- 3:17I see when do they arrived this afternoon? I have rented a house
- 3:22for them, a large house some twenty miles out of the city. It
- 3:23has a high wall surrounding it, which will ensure privacy with a heremant,
- 3:28and privacy is a good idea. I would like you to arrive at the
- 3:30house not later than seven this evening. The Prince will be there and I
- 3:32shall present you a room, will be at your disposal, and you will
- 3:37be required to stay in the house for the next fourteen days, the duration
- 3:39of the Prince's visit. I trust that will suit you, mister Knight.
- 3:43She caroun for the door you're paying me. I'll even wear a surround.
- 3:46You have, of course a gun. Yeah, you expect that sort of
- 3:49trouble. I do not expect any trouble, mister Night. I am just
- 3:52taking precautions, that is all. I'll bring my gun with me. I
- 3:54think in that case there is nothing further to discuss. I shall see you
- 3:57at the house. I have written the address and directions how to Richard.
- 4:00Please be prompt, mister Knight. The Prince does not like to be kept
- 4:03waiting. I'll be anti accident. Your english is very good, if I
- 4:06may say, Soshi karoom. So they told me at Harvard, good morning,
- 4:11mister Knight. What the heck was a guy packed girl looking after four
- 4:21hair and beauties? Well let's see now shirts visitors yet? Okay, okay,
- 4:31don't bustig strang. Yeah, mister Knight in person me, I see
- 4:38you for a moment. Yeah, sure, come in park he had and
- 4:42follow me. Oh, park yourself. There's a good chair, thank you.
- 4:47Oh what's the urgent? It is rather delicate mission, mister Knight.
- 4:51I shure who it is done. I'll make a fast pell. I haven't
- 4:55got much time, and of course have ruled of me. It should have
- 4:58to be blunt. You are hurrying now to undertake an assignment for Prince al
- 5:01Zaman am I You are discreet, mister Knight, but you don't know much
- 5:08about Prince alsa Man. You're not a very present person, I assure you.
- 5:12In his own country, he is absolute dictator and acts as such life
- 5:15and death I used to command, and no woman is safe from his husband.
- 5:20The Prince's word is absolute. What do you want me to do?
- 5:24Start a crusade. There was one moment she was beautiful and not one of
- 5:28his subjects. She was a French girl named Marie Desprey. He met her
- 5:31on the Rivie. He made her many office, even marriage. Then she
- 5:36disappeared, and by the time her disappearance was discovered, the Prince's y'r tad
- 5:42sailed. Marie Desprey has not been seen since. I am her brother.
- 5:48Oh now, I knew it would have been suicide for me to try and
- 5:51enter as the man's own country, so I have waited for him to leave
- 5:55it. This is the first time he has done so since last summer.
- 5:59He has brought some his hair and with him. I know that. What
- 6:01I do not know is whether Marie is one of them. Hey, you
- 6:05are the one man who can help me, who will be in a position
- 6:08to find out if he has my sister. Yeah, but it's not as
- 6:11simple as that. You mean money, mister Knight. I will pay you
- 6:14five thousand dollars to night. It's not a question at dough. I've got
- 6:17a reputation in this town as an honest investigator. I've been employed by Prince
- 6:20al Zaman. Now you want me to spy on him? I see there's
- 6:26no more to be said. Then I only ask that you forget we have
- 6:30ever met, I've ever had this conversation. I should spend my life looking
- 6:34for Marie, but Balzaman learns of it, my chances will not be with
- 6:38a snap of the fingers. Look now, if I want to contact you,
- 6:42where do I find you? The hotel Kadia, mister Knight. Does
- 6:46that mean you will do it? I don't know. I'll have to think
- 6:48about itsieur. If you do, you will have the undying gratitude of a
- 6:51desperate man. I shall wait anxiously at the hotel for the word from here.
- 6:56We don't bank on it, and I know a man when I see
- 6:59when, oh, where miss your knight? It was sharp on seven when
- 7:08I turned over the house, a large forbidding sort of buildings surrounded by a
- 7:11large forbidding sort of wall. There was a guard at the gates and another
- 7:15at the doorway of prince als, a man's private apartments, to which the
- 7:17shi Karoun led me. The guard at the door were a long curved knife,
- 7:23and he didn't look as though it was just for decoration. He opened
- 7:26the door and ushould just in. You will address the Prince as your highness.
- 7:30When I saw the Prince, I felt more like addressing him as fat
- 7:31sol. He was reclining on two overstuffed cushions, and it was hard to
- 7:34tell where he finished and the cushions started. There was a four pound box
- 7:39of chocolates beside him, and he kept dipping into it with his fat,
- 7:42short fingers. I have brought the private detective. Your highness, you are
- 7:46a night. I am at your highness the dire excellent chocolates. Harold you,
- 7:53honor me, my prince. Night. Yeah, your highness, Your
- 7:57highness, you understand. They shall be away for some days from tomorrow morning.
- 8:01It is essential for my women to be well guarded. My gods have
- 8:05orders to kill any intruder. Your orders are exactly the same, A hard
- 8:13center. Hey, now wait a minute, and this is the United States,
- 8:16so that this business about killing you can't? Are you questioning me?
- 8:22I guess not, Your highness. That is better. You need not fear
- 8:26any consequences. Night. My influence with your country is considerable. The women's
- 8:31apartments are directly above here. I have given orders that no one enters on
- 8:35pain of death, no one. I get it. I mean I understand
- 8:39your Highness. Should you need any assistance, you have only to call my
- 8:43gods or speak English. In my own country, I find that has certain
- 8:48advantages. I can give orders which will not be understood by eavesdroppers. Yeah,
- 8:52I guess that would be a helper in your country. I think that
- 8:56is everything. A room will give you any the information you require. Retire
- 9:01from the Prince's presence backwards Oho, the first lay is finished already, Abdol.
- 9:15The audience is over, ye ce d mister Knights. Let me introduce
- 9:18you to Abdol. He will be upstairs most of the time guarding the harem
- 9:22Good evening. Well, will you come along, amister Night, and I
- 9:24will show you your room. Thanks. I think you've found the Prince a
- 9:28little startling, Yeah, a little. It is understandable from the western point
- 9:33of view. But in our country you must remember, here's the absolute ruler,
- 9:37and you get carved by one of those knives if you're feed him the
- 9:39wrong sort of chocolates. It is not advisable to joke about the Prince.
- 9:43Mister Knight, here is your room. I trust you will be comfortable.
- 9:50I have left you a bottle of your American Rye say, that's really thoughtful
- 9:54of you. How about we open it now? We do not drink alcohol,
- 9:58mister Knight, but of you, Kurt, do so open it by
- 10:01all means. Tomorrow morning the Prince leaves to conduct his negotiations and I go
- 10:05with him. As the Prince told you, the four women are upstairs.
- 10:09There is also Fatima who looks after them. She prepares all the meals and
- 10:13will serve yours. Then there is Abdul, whom you have met here,
- 10:16Hassan on Adam, and Blanche the guard on the gate. Well sounds nice
- 10:20and cozy, cheers, but what in thunder is that? That? Is
- 10:26the Prince going to make his knightly inspection of the Harem. The gong is
- 10:31a warning that he's coming here. I can see how that had been needed.
- 10:35Is that another joke, mister Knight? She anyway you look at it,
- 10:39it's no joke. After breakfast next morning, I took a stroll down
- 10:48the drive as our car disappearing through the gates. The Prince and her own
- 10:52on their way. That left me and the Harem and the guards. One
- 10:58on the gate who'd let me to last night was right on the job.
- 11:01I don't. I might as well strike up an acquaintance, and this time
- 11:03I used the right greeting. I'll be with you and you boss egg of
- 11:09a morning. I hu, you don't sound like you come from the Prince's
- 11:13country. I've only been there about three years, boss, Between you and
- 11:16me, I was a seaman on a tanker, but I ran into a
- 11:18little bother and tuners and skipped a ship when I wound up on this job.
- 11:22Uh huh, you like it? You're better than jail. Boss.
- 11:26Oh, here comes trouble. You mean a little guy coming towards us.
- 11:30Who's there? That's her son. He's pure poisoned, boss, Yes,
- 11:35sir, pure poison. Good morning, Good morning. Oh you are mister
- 11:39Knight. I am Hassan. Oh yeah, her own mentioned you as ane.
- 11:43Being a guard is tal work, don't you think, mister Knight?
- 11:46So little excitement. It is always more exciting to attack than deep pain and
- 11:52more dangerous. Life is nothing without danger. I do not know why my
- 11:56master, the Prince, should have engaged your services. I am a superb
- 12:01chef, a brilliant knife throw it, and my cunning is known throughout East
- 12:03well. Such brilliance must be exhausting. Maybe he wanted to give you a
- 12:05rest, possibly, although I could have told him I am not tired.
- 12:09It has been delightful to meet you, mister Knight. We shall see more
- 12:13of each other for the present. Good morning, okay. On what does
- 12:18that character do for a living? Oh? He does many jobs? Who
- 12:22are the prince? Who? Any time the Prince wants something to fix,
- 12:24it's her son who does it? She make me arbuous about his shold the
- 12:28oil. Then her son goes to see him after her son's season, she
- 12:33makes no more noise. Ever. Yeah, I get the point, and
- 12:35obviously so does a sheek. Since hasan so slick with a knife. Put
- 12:39something else, spause, he eats hashish. Sometimes that's a time to stay
- 12:43away from him, far away. After that, I decided the best place
- 12:50for me was my room. I killed the rest of the day there,
- 12:52and the rest of the bottle. Fortunately I taken the precaution of bringing a
- 12:56quart on my own. By midnight, i'd made fair inroads into that too,
- 13:00And then suddenly I heard a sound. Yeah, wow, what do
- 13:07you know? Straight out of the Arabian nights? Jashmac silk trises and all
- 13:13I'll be with you shut the door, you dope, you're an American.
- 13:16Well, I didn't come here to see the star spangled ben. I shut
- 13:18that door quick. Welcome back. Well, it's been a while. I
- 13:31listened to all of these at one point, and I wonder, really what
- 13:41or what reason they had for calling in night, because the reason they stated
- 13:48that they wanted somebody who understood the way that the Western world work doesn't really
- 13:56ring true here. For one thing, they already have one of the guard
- 14:01who's guards who's a Westerner. Uh. And for another thing, I'm not
- 14:07certain of the need for that, given the fact that the Harem is spending
- 14:11its time all locked up inside this compound. But we've got an American girl
- 14:18and h something's developing kind of a weird point for Cliffhanger. But we'll get
- 14:24deeper into the adventure next week. Now it's time to wrap up today's story
- 14:31of the lor of Yours truly Johnny Doller, the Lorco Diamond Matter. It's
- 14:37time for us to play part five, So enjoy from Hollywood. It's time
- 14:43now, or Johnny Doller, Johnny Maria, Well, isn't it kind of
- 14:50late at night to call? You're good to have men being followed. I
- 14:54home, No on the waterfront. I came in here to f the devil.
- 15:00You have to go out. Everything was set up. If you'd stayed
- 15:01home, you'd have been safe. What are you trying to do? Get
- 15:03yourself killed? Are you? What's the name of the place, Number forty
- 15:07one. I'm free to go. No, whatever you do, don't go
- 15:11outside. Stay right where you are until I get there. Take your choice,
- 15:16Maria. It's either that or wind up on a marble slab. What
- 15:18do you mean? You know what I mean? You know better than anybody.
- 15:22I'll stay there tonight and every weekday. Night. Bob Bailey and the
- 15:33Transcribed Adventures of the Band with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Prelance insurance
- 15:39investigator as Truli Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Doller, location, Algiers,
- 15:54North Africa to the home office trans World Fidelity Company, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 15:58Assignment the Lord Diamonds Matter, a hundred thousand dollars in jewels stolen and a
- 16:03murder expense account continued idem twelve two dollars and twenty cents taxi fare to the
- 16:11water front of the Marrakesh Cafe. There was no time to lose and no
- 16:15time to get help from Inspector Marcus. A half hour earlier, he'd set
- 16:18a trap, and he and his men were staked out around Marie's apartment house
- 16:22waiting. But apparently she'd gone to the cafe before he got there, so
- 16:26now the whole thing had blown wide open. A rude of La Mare was
- 16:34a dead end street close to the water, deserted at this hour of night.
- 16:38A couple of dim street lights and a light over the door of the
- 16:41Marrakesh Cafe. Everything else was in darkness. There was no movement, no
- 16:45sign of life over here. Even you got here, no trouble so far,
- 16:57with a sailor over there finally passed out. You're probably used to that
- 17:03kind of trouble. Cigarette, Yes, thank you. Now what were you
- 17:07doing down here at this time of night? He was a visiting your friend.
- 17:14Is that the friend's car parked out at the curb, Yes, Charlie
- 17:18Barrett. Huh, the meatpacker from Chicago who was going to give you the
- 17:22local diamonds. Well, I figured he'd got over his man's bill. How
- 17:26did you know about it? He told me just before I knocked him out
- 17:30for a second time. Tonight he said you two had a fight over a
- 17:33week ago, and that he told you he wasn't buying any diamonds after all.
- 17:37Well, it was just for a while I thought I had you tagged
- 17:41again. I wondered why you hadn't canceled the order when you'd been told he
- 17:44wasn't going to pay for the stuff. Johnny, it was just a dog.
- 17:48I knew he would come around. Yeah, that's about the way I
- 17:51figured it. Another explanation, So I let you off the hook again.
- 17:56Why, Johnny, why have you been trying so hard, trying what to
- 18:02find some way of involving me in this? The facts just seemed to turn
- 18:06up. I wasn't trying to find them. Made a big difference, didn't
- 18:10you learning about mister Barrett? Learning what about him? That I was accepting
- 18:17a twenty thousand dollars gift from him? Why should it your life? You're
- 18:19on? It did? Though? Before that you were seemed to be interested.
- 18:26Sure, you're a very beautiful woman, and that's all it was.
- 18:32What more did you want or a Jenny? Okay, I've been blaming They
- 18:37tell me something? What about Barrett? Now that you've kissed and made up
- 18:41as the engagement bank on again. I haven't decided your journey. Ah,
- 18:48well, come on, let's get out of here. I'll take you home.
- 18:51Do you think it's there was no sign of anybody around when I came
- 18:53in. Whoever it was probably got scared off. I was scared to death
- 18:57when I got the light of the cafe. I jammed on the brakes and
- 19:00run for the door. The car was right behind you. Get a look
- 19:03at the driver. How'd you get hold of Barrett's car borrowing? He gave
- 19:07it to me. M not a bad night's work. It's a good car.
- 19:11Then you really play rocked on't you? Johnny? Sometimes it depends on
- 19:18get I'm quite back at the car. It came from across the street.
- 19:22It's pitch black over there. Are you going to do? Look, Maria,
- 19:23you're safe as long as you're back at the car. Here, What
- 19:26about you? I can't get a shot from here. I'm pinned down.
- 19:27I'm gonna make a run for that stone curb. Try to draw a shot
- 19:30and see where the flash comes from. Oh don't worry, kid, I'm
- 19:33the carefulest guy you ever saw. Right now, Sit tight, Here goes
- 19:41Johnny. Yeah, I think I got him spotted. Let's see just how
- 19:45close I get. Is nobody running away? So do I? Why the
- 19:52devil? Why don't they get some street lights down here? Yeah? I
- 19:56see it getting away. One lucky shot. Give me a keys. Wait
- 20:04here, I'm going after loads. Pile in. Hurry up, let's go
- 20:12a few blocks away. I picked up the tail lights of the other car
- 20:15and poured on the gas to keep hanging on. We roared through the empty
- 20:18streets along the water front, then swung into the coast road and headed out
- 20:21of the city. The model I was driving had been built for road racing
- 20:25and firing accidents. I didn't figure the car had had much chance of shaking
- 20:27me. There was a narrow, winding road following the rocky edge of the
- 20:33headlands, and the curves were sharp and dangerous, especially at the speed we
- 20:37were trying to Finally, it happened. The car had roared up a steep
- 20:41raid and missed the curve at the top. It rolled over and over,
- 20:44the headlights, cutting crazy patterns and the blacknesses. It plunged down towards the
- 20:48beach. I finally braked to a stop about thirty yards from the wreck,
- 20:52jumped out and started toward it, and just then the gas tank caught and
- 20:57burst, and the car exploded to a tower of flames. I caught a
- 21:02glimpse of the driver pinned on the wreck. Then the fire took over and
- 21:04covered him, and I knew one thing was certain he'd had it. It's
- 21:18dying down, Yeah, the gasoline is all burned down. A terribly way
- 21:23to die. What way, isn't it? I guess Johnny couldn't have a
- 21:29cigarette? Please? Yes, sure, here you go, thank you?
- 21:34Yeah, light up Maria while you watch him burn. Quite a horrible thing
- 21:40to say. It's quite a relief, though, isn't it knowing you're safe
- 21:42now? But of course it's a relief when someone had just tried to kill
- 21:47you and now you know that that's true. But it's not what I meant.
- 21:49I don't think I understand you. What I meant was you're safe because
- 21:53now he won't be able to talk. Who won't be able? Do you
- 21:57mean? You know who's in that? Of course? And so do you.
- 22:02It's the customs property agent Andre Jordine. Sure who else would have any
- 22:07reason to kill you? Since he was the only one left after Oh,
- 22:11I guess you haven't heard about it. Yet Bobo's did too. Your other
- 22:18partner, Andrea shot him in the back earlier tonight up in the casbar,
- 22:22So you're doubly safe now, Maria. They're both dead, and for everything
- 22:26else, you've got an explanation with just one exception. I don't even know
- 22:30what you're talking about. I don't be modest. Actually, it was quite
- 22:33a scheme. Whether you thought it up or Andre, you out of your
- 22:37mind. The idea was to make sure the diamond courier died, either on
- 22:40the plane or at least before he got through customs. That way, the
- 22:42courier's briefcase would be sent to Andrea's office. Then Bobo was to help Andre
- 22:47fake to stick up, but Bobo turned out to be a tough cookie.
- 22:52Sticking to plan, he decided to go for broke when he slugged Andre.
- 22:56He tried to make it stick, but Andre managed to reach his gun,
- 22:57so he ended up in the hospital. Instead of the more what has all
- 23:00this got to do with me? And Andrea got the idea of a double
- 23:03cross. He left the hospital, went into the Caspit to look for Bobo.
- 23:07He found him, and he killed him. He steered. One next
- 23:10step was a natural to knock you off and keep the whole take for himself.
- 23:14We expected it, and we were ready for him. Inspector Marcus has
- 23:17staked out right now at your apartment house, waiting for Andre to show up.
- 23:19We didn't know you'd already gone out earlier. Wait. All of this
- 23:23maybe true, journey, but why do you insist on trying to fit me
- 23:27into the picture, because that's where you belong. I mentioned the fact that
- 23:32you'd been able to come up with an explanation every time you needed it,
- 23:34with just one exception. What exception? Both Andre and Bobo have tried to
- 23:40kill you this evening. Why unless you were in on this thing? What
- 23:44reason would they have? Good night? I don't know why? Of course,
- 23:51why should I know? I don't know why I tried to kill me?
- 23:53Johnny? Oh, good answer, Maria, and it'll probably work.
- 24:00Yeah, you figured that one out first. I don't know what you no
- 24:03caution? Well, who has it done? I will before morning, Johnny?
- 24:08What couldn't you knock it off? Kids? You got the wrong guy.
- 24:11It won't work with me? Good sure? I know you're beautiful,
- 24:15charming, lovely, and you're rotten rotten right to the court. Why do
- 24:19you do it? Johnny? Good? Await from you? Goodbye Maria.
- 24:37An hour later I was out at the air terminal and the Customers Property office
- 24:40watching Inspector Marcus open a vaults. You what a new soon? Or was
- 24:47they make these combinations so difficult? That's the general idea, inspecting. True,
- 24:51but still one would seem to uh, now, if you are correct,
- 24:56missie, that we shall soon have our hand there chase in the corner.
- 25:00Ah, maybe it's is the one. Good, let's have a look
- 25:04at it. It would be necessary to force the lock here right over with
- 25:08this what sucknation, which is merely a matter of wella beautiful no, yeah,
- 25:19true, beautiful? Tell me something we should dona? What made you
- 25:23know that Andre Jordan was guilty? Something Bobo said just before he died.
- 25:30Yeah, he confessed he was the man who had slugged Andre. But Andrea
- 25:34had described as a sailor as tall and thin. Bobo was short, with
- 25:38a stocky built. Andrea had lied, and all this time the diamonds were
- 25:44right here in this boat, to which Andrea, as property agent, had
- 25:48exited. Can you think of a safer place? He inspector, what about
- 25:52Maria Dataria, M well, I am inclined to agree with your dollar about
- 26:00two Yeah, I know nothing but suspicion. Yeah, precisely. If I
- 26:07were to file charges and bring her to trial on such evidence as this,
- 26:12she would cry a little perhaps, and look very beautiful, and Monsieur Lecourt
- 26:18would hang me. Noel, Yeah, you're right. You can never make
- 26:23it stick. Yeah, she love. Expense account item thirteen, six hundred

- 27:33matter an exciting chase after a charming beautiful girl. After all, who wouldn't
- 27:38join us? Won't you? Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly,
- 28:00Ny Dallas, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Less
- 28:03Crutchfield. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone hurt In this Week's Guest
- 28:08where Lillian Bayeff, Jack Moyles, Victor Perrin, C. K Barrett,
- 28:12Lawrence Dubkin, Boris Lewis, and Janeavello. Musical supervision by Amerigo Marino.
- 28:18Be sure to join us on Monday Night, same time and station for another
- 28:22exciting story of Yours Truly. Johnny Duller, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back.
- 29:26What a contrast in style between this week's program and last week's. Last week's
- 29:36program really was a very uh tender, uh sort of uh sort of story
- 29:51and Johnny's reaction to it. Now we've got a much more hard boiled story
- 29:57with the end with even one of the principal criminals apparently getting away with the
- 30:04crime. I think in this case it's a nice quiz twist. They don't
- 30:11make a habit on it on Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, but having it
- 30:15happen is definitely a surprise and kind of shows just the breadth of Bob Bailey's
- 30:25ability at characterization and just how Johnny Dowler is really built into this complete,
- 30:37complete character with Bob Bailey in the league. Well, we'll be back on
- 30:44Monday. Well another episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar Friday. On next Friday,
- 30:49be sure and listen to part two of Nightmare for Night and join us
- 30:53back here tomorrow for the lineup. And coming up on Sunday, be listening
