Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch, to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard, to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:43Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we are talking about this week's full episode subject Waylon Jennings.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We're rewinding back to our two part sex Pistol Saga,
- 0:53Speaker 1: previewing this month's exclusive episode on Alice Cooper, our upcoming
- 0:58Speaker 1: new episode on Mark Lanigan, and we get into your voicemails, text, dms,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. This is
- 1:04Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:07Speaker 1: diggers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:10Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories
- 1:13Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind that you'll end up
- 1:15Speaker 1: telling someone else. All right, this goes, let's get into it,
- 1:30Speaker 1: all right, Disgraceland listeners, lots to talk about in this episode,
- 1:34Speaker 1: as you could have probably gleaned from the intro there,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we got a whole bunch of content coming your way
- 1:39Speaker 1: in the next seven days. We're in that seven day
- 1:42Speaker 1: spread right now. Two new episodes being released from Disgray
- 1:45Speaker 1: sand this week. Our new episode on Waylon Jennings, which
- 1:48Speaker 1: is available everywhere for you to listen to right now.
- 1:50Speaker 1: In our exclusive episode on Alice Cooper, which is available
- 1:54Speaker 1: to our Apple and Patreon All Access members. Later in
- 1:57Speaker 1: this episode, on that note, in the part that's available
- 2:00Speaker 1: only to subscribers, I'll be talking more about Waylon Jennings
- 2:04Speaker 1: and giving you a story about Whaleen that didn't make
- 2:06Speaker 1: it into our episode. Remember that whole Cocaine Bear thing.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Remember that movie that came out a couple years ago. Well,
- 2:12Speaker 1: as if Waylon Jennings wasn't crazy enough, he had a
- 2:15Speaker 1: role in that batshit crazy Cocaine Bear story. Not the movie,
- 2:18Speaker 1: the real story, and I'll give that to you. Like
- 2:21Speaker 1: I said in the exclusive section of this year After Party,
- 2:24Speaker 1: coming up in a bit. What I want to talk
- 2:26Speaker 1: about here though, what I want to shine a light
- 2:28Speaker 1: on You know, it's interesting. We spent a good portion
- 2:32Speaker 1: of the last week's after party talking about sort of
- 2:34Speaker 1: what we do here, so kind of resetting the board
- 2:36Speaker 1: a little bit and focusing our goal, our mission, what
- 2:40Speaker 1: we're trying to do. We're trying how we're trying to
- 2:42Speaker 1: entertain ourselves with stories that are that are for the
- 2:45Speaker 1: most part, kept under wraps, unknown, et cetera. And I
- 2:48Speaker 1: started thinking, you know, what story am I going to
- 2:50Speaker 1: give him? I thought about giving you all that cocaine
- 2:51Speaker 1: bear story here in the beginning, but I'm saving that
- 2:55Speaker 1: and this story. It's music related. It came to my
- 2:58Speaker 1: attention yesterday. I want to talk about this here. Okay,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I want to shine a light on this story. I
- 3:04Speaker 1: want to bring attention to it. It's little known at
- 3:08Speaker 1: the moment as of this recording, but it might be
- 3:10Speaker 1: the type of thing that by the time you hear
- 3:11Speaker 1: this episode. I'm recording it on Tuesday of this week.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You're going to get this episode on Thursday. By the
- 3:16Speaker 1: time you hear this, maybe the story will have blown up.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe the Internet will have done its thing,
- 3:21Speaker 1: done what it's good at, and that's spreading this story
- 3:24Speaker 1: far wide, hopefully. And no, I'm not talking about the
- 3:26Speaker 1: cold Play cheating scandal, although I could that story doesn't quit.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Fun fact, I went to high school with the wife
- 3:33Speaker 1: involved in that horrific story, but that's not what I
- 3:35Speaker 1: want to talk about. I want to talk about this
- 3:38Speaker 1: story that my wife brought to my attention yesterday that
- 3:41Speaker 1: was so incredible. I was like, it was one of
- 3:43Speaker 1: those things. I was like, that can't be true, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: she showed me the video online. I was a news
- 3:48Speaker 1: segment I believe from a West Coast local news program,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and I still didn't believe it, and I spent time
- 3:55Speaker 1: this morning researching it. And it's one of those stories
- 3:59Speaker 1: where you know there's enough credible evidence right now where
- 4:03Speaker 1: I believe the story to be true, but it's still
- 4:05Speaker 1: so insane to me that I kind of feel like
- 4:07Speaker 1: the wool might be being pulled over my eyes. That's
- 4:11Speaker 1: not happening. This story is true. I'd be shocked if
- 4:14Speaker 1: I if I got this wrong. But it's that type
- 4:17Speaker 1: of incredible story, So I don't want this story to
- 4:20Speaker 1: be true. Okay, that's the other part of this. So
- 4:23Speaker 1: you remember the horrific LA wildfires that took place back
- 4:25Speaker 1: in January. Thirty people died, about ten thousand homes were destroyed.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Of course, you remember this, A lot of us have
- 4:31Speaker 1: friends who lost homes or were otherwise directly affected by
- 4:35Speaker 1: that tragedy. And then, you know, a couple weeks after
- 4:38Speaker 1: that tragedy, they had this concert that they put on
- 4:40Speaker 1: to raise money for the victims of the wildfire. Green
- 4:43Speaker 1: Day played, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga read Hot Chili. Pepper's
- 4:46Speaker 1: concert was streamed live on Apple Music, on Netflix elsewhere
- 4:50Speaker 1: as well. That event, that concert raised one hundred million
- 4:53Speaker 1: dollars to help the people who were devastated by that fire.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Great cause, great, great thing to do. And you know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: one of the things that I love about being an
- 5:03Speaker 1: American is when when tragedy happens, it just seems that
- 5:08Speaker 1: Americans step up, they put their money where their mouth is,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and they help out. And that was definitely in evidence
- 5:15Speaker 1: after this concert or during this concert again, they raised
- 5:18Speaker 1: one hundred million dollars. That's a lot of money and donations. Well,
- 5:21Speaker 1: it turns out none of that money aside from a
- 5:26Speaker 1: couple five hundred dollars gift cards. That's all I can
- 5:28Speaker 1: I can find here. For the most part, none of
- 5:31Speaker 1: that money has gone to the victims yet. Okay, about
- 5:34Speaker 1: seventy five million of the one hundred million raised, it's
- 5:38Speaker 1: been paid out. So the concert folks are like, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 1: we did our thing, and they did do their thing.
- 5:43Speaker 1: They gave their money, they sent the money out. Okay,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but not to the victims. That money went to nonprofits
- 5:50Speaker 1: who are supposed to distribute that money to the victims.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Now here's the sketchy part. Some of these nonprofits they
- 5:58Speaker 1: seem to have nothing to do you with aiding victims
- 6:01Speaker 1: of natural disaster. And the more you dig in to
- 6:06Speaker 1: this story, the more you dig into the process that
- 6:10Speaker 1: these nonprofits have to go through to receive this money,
- 6:13Speaker 1: the more you're gonna realize that the barrier of entry
- 6:15Speaker 1: to be considered as one of the recipients for this
- 6:17Speaker 1: bread it's very low. Some of the reporting I saw
- 6:21Speaker 1: said that it was. There was a simple sixth question
- 6:23Speaker 1: questionnaire that these nonprofits had to answer to qualify for
- 6:28Speaker 1: these millions of dollars in some cases. Now this information
- 6:32Speaker 1: is publicly available. You can go find this yourself with
- 6:36Speaker 1: very very little effort. Okay, I don't mean just find
- 6:40Speaker 1: somebody talking about it on x or Instagram or whatever.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You can, you can actually go to the organization responsible
- 6:46Speaker 1: for this, and you can you can find out everything.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I just told you. It's right there. But you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: you're also probably before you even get there, you're gonna
- 6:51Speaker 1: come upon two independent journalists, one of whom has positioned
- 6:54Speaker 1: herself as a sort of unintentional victim advocate here. Her
- 6:58Speaker 1: name is Sue Pasco, and she was just asked by
- 7:01Speaker 1: some of these victims like or notified, and it was like, hey, hey,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I can't this concert happened, we can't get this money.
- 7:06Speaker 1: How do we get this money? What's going on? So
- 7:08Speaker 1: she looked into it, and this is all kind of
- 7:11Speaker 1: breaking in the last twenty four hours. It's making the
- 7:13Speaker 1: rounds on various news outlets. What Sue Pasco here has
- 7:16Speaker 1: come up with. And Sue this woman, Sue Pasco, she
- 7:19Speaker 1: doesn't seem partisans, she doesn't seem political in the slightest.
- 7:22Speaker 1: She seems to be an honest broker. And again, this
- 7:25Speaker 1: information that I'm relaying to you that she has related
- 7:27Speaker 1: to everybody is out there. It's publicly available. Okay, The
- 7:31Speaker 1: story is this, They raised one hundred million dollars seventy
- 7:34Speaker 1: five million off it went to nonprofits. As far as
- 7:37Speaker 1: we can tell right now, none of that money has
- 7:39Speaker 1: gone to the victims. We haven't found any testimony public
- 7:44Speaker 1: testimony from any of these victims saying that they actually
- 7:46Speaker 1: applied for this money and received it. Not as of yet.
- 7:48Speaker 1: That might change. By the time you hear this, that
- 7:50Speaker 1: might change, but as of yet it hasn't. And this
- 7:53Speaker 1: news has been out there now again for more than
- 7:55Speaker 1: twenty four hours. It's making the rounds. Lots of people
- 7:58Speaker 1: have seen an interview Sue Pasco making these claims. So
- 8:02Speaker 1: you would think if this money had gotten to where
- 8:04Speaker 1: it was supposed to go, that that news would be
- 8:06Speaker 1: out there. However, it's not. Okay. Now the point we
- 8:10Speaker 1: need this story to get out there. This is one
- 8:12Speaker 1: of those stories that cannot be suppressed. This is one
- 8:15Speaker 1: of those stories that deserves the coverage. It is a
- 8:18Speaker 1: very simple way to do this. We need to get
- 8:19Speaker 1: the artists from the concert to get involved in demand
- 8:22Speaker 1: transparency so that the story gets out there and so
- 8:25Speaker 1: that the victims can get their hands on this bread
- 8:27Speaker 1: they can get the release that they need. The fires
- 8:29Speaker 1: were seven months ago. There may be a perfectly logical
- 8:32Speaker 1: explanation why this money has not been dispersed, But it
- 8:35Speaker 1: does not change the fact that the fires were seven
- 8:38Speaker 1: months ago, the concert was nearly seven months ago. These
- 8:41Speaker 1: people needed relief more than I'm guessing than they do now,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I'm sure, but they still need the relief and they're
- 8:49Speaker 1: still looking to get it clearly, and still, according to reports,
- 8:53Speaker 1: these victims are coming up with bubbkis, so where's the money?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Where's the money? Lebuski is? This story is scandal. I
- 8:58Speaker 1: don't know. There may be a perfectly logical exit, it
- 9:00Speaker 1: seems super dubious. Maybe the nonprofits will claim that it
- 9:04Speaker 1: takes time to process this money, but if so, that's
- 9:07Speaker 1: unacceptable and it needs to be solved. And again, the
- 9:11Speaker 1: simple truth is that people were hurt by this tragedy.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That people need the money that they're fellow Americans donated
- 9:16Speaker 1: to them generously. That money should not be sitting idle
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the accounts of nonprofits or worse, god forbid, paying
- 9:22Speaker 1: the salaries of nonprofit nonprofit executives. And here's the main
- 9:26Speaker 1: point again, the musicians here, the rock stars Flee, Billie Eilish,
- 9:29Speaker 1: Lady Gagat, Billy Joe Armstrong. They need to speak up
- 9:32Speaker 1: and demand transparency and force this story if true, and
- 9:37Speaker 1: again it appears to be that it is true. They
- 9:39Speaker 1: need to force this story into the news more fully
- 9:42Speaker 1: so that the people can get what they need. Okay,
- 9:45Speaker 1: I want to give the organizers of the concert the
- 9:48Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt, and I am and I even
- 9:50Speaker 1: want to give the nonprofits the benefit of the doubt,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but it doesn't change the fact that the money has
- 9:55Speaker 1: not gotten to where it needs to be and that
- 9:57Speaker 1: needs to change. Okay, So this story needs to get
- 10:00Speaker 1: out there, and I hope this isn't one big disgrace.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I hope that these rock stars can push this issue.
- 10:06Speaker 1: You know, maybe if you're tooling around on X you
- 10:08Speaker 1: can tag a couple of them and we're on Instagram
- 10:11Speaker 1: or wherever, and you can tell them the you know,
- 10:14Speaker 1: where's the money? Lebowski, get out there and say something,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Billy Joe, get out there and say something. Lady Gaga,
- 10:20Speaker 1: you guys aren't afraid of the microphone. All right, let's
- 10:22Speaker 1: get the story out there. Okay. Speaking to stories, let's
- 10:26Speaker 1: talk about what other stories we have going on this
- 10:28Speaker 1: week in the Exclusive Feed. This week, we have an
- 10:31Speaker 1: episode on Alice Cooper. Matt, let's go ahead and play
- 10:36Speaker 1: a clip here so that the disgrace and listeners who
- 10:38Speaker 1: are not All Access members can hear a little bit
- 10:41Speaker 1: about Alis and they can hear what they're missing. Okay,
- 10:43Speaker 1: give it a The Sunset Strip is living up to
- 10:53Speaker 1: its name. It was bathed in pink and orange light
- 10:57Speaker 1: as the evening sun sank into the Hollywood Hills. The
- 11:00Speaker 1: strip looked beautiful for just a moment, then it plunged
- 11:05Speaker 1: into darkness. However, the darkness was far from still and
- 11:10Speaker 1: far from silent, because the darkness had a voice, a
- 11:14Speaker 1: voice that called out to the creatures of the night,
- 11:17Speaker 1: the ones who slept in the daytime, staying hidden from
- 11:20Speaker 1: the sun. The voice of the Knight called out to them.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It pulled them out of their hiding spots. It demanded
- 11:27Speaker 1: they'd take to the streets to satiate their unquenchable thirst,
- 11:31Speaker 1: their thirst for blood, because at night, the Sunset Strip
- 11:36Speaker 1: was crawling with vampires if he knew where to look.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Not long after the sun finally disappeared behind the hills,
- 11:43Speaker 1: the vampires stirred. They slunk down the boulevards, staying hidden
- 11:48Speaker 1: in the shadows, and they crept through the alleyways stalking
- 11:52Speaker 1: their prey. These vampires would go to the ends of
- 11:55Speaker 1: the earth to satisfy their craving and further to get
- 11:58Speaker 1: their fix. We travel all the way over the rainbow.
- 12:03Speaker 1: All right, guys, that's the Alice Cooper episode being released
- 12:05Speaker 1: this week. That is part of our exclusive offering to
- 12:09Speaker 1: Disgraceland All Access members. Five bucks a month gets you
- 12:12Speaker 1: that extra episode per month, like Alice. Here gets you
- 12:16Speaker 1: ad free listening as well, Disgraceland and hollywood Land completely
- 12:20Speaker 1: ad free, no ads, and it gets you a little
- 12:22Speaker 1: more bonus after party as well. And you're gonna hear
- 12:25Speaker 1: me later in the bonus section of this after party
- 12:27Speaker 1: talking about Waylon Jennings and the Cocaine Bear. All right.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Also this week, in addition to that new Whylan Jennings episode,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and again that Whalan episode is not exclusive. It's going
- 12:36Speaker 1: to be available everywhere. It's available everywhere right now, I
- 12:38Speaker 1: should say. But in addition to that, we've got our
- 12:40Speaker 1: rewind episodes on the Sex Pistols Parts one and two
- 12:44Speaker 1: come in your way if you want a real take
- 12:46Speaker 1: on one of the greatest bands of all time, The
- 12:48Speaker 1: real mythology, not the sanitize bunk the Hulu excuse me
- 12:53Speaker 1: the Chasm. I haven't forgot about Chasm, the Chasm served
- 12:56Speaker 1: up a couple of years ago. Then check out these
- 12:59Speaker 1: episodes on the Sex Pistol, some of Zeth Lundy's best writing.
- 13:03Speaker 1: If I do say so, Chasm can't keep us down, man,
- 13:06Speaker 1: just can't. All right, So after those Sex Pistols episodes,
- 13:08Speaker 1: we've got our Mark Landing and episode coming your way
- 13:11Speaker 1: next Tuesday. Great story in that episode on Mark and
- 13:15Speaker 1: Josh Hollmay from Queens to the Stone Age getting caught
- 13:18Speaker 1: up in all kinds of Detroit shakedowns. Listen when you're
- 13:22Speaker 1: when you're chilling out with your headphones on, you get
- 13:25Speaker 1: the Mark Lanning and episode playing. You're gonna be tempted
- 13:28Speaker 1: to think about Matt Dylan, but don't. Okay, when you
- 13:30Speaker 1: hear the Mark lanning an episode, you don't know what
- 13:32Speaker 1: I'm talking about. Try not to think about mat Dylan. Instead,
- 13:35Speaker 1: be thinking about all the underrated singer songwriters who are
- 13:39Speaker 1: out there. We just discussed bands who never lived up
- 13:42Speaker 1: to their expectations with the replacements, But Mark Lannigan such
- 13:45Speaker 1: an underrated singer songwriter, got me thinking what other singer
- 13:49Speaker 1: songwriters are wildly underrated? That's gonna be our question of
- 13:52Speaker 1: the week next week. Six one seven nine oh six
- 13:55Speaker 1: six six three eight to let me know, call me,
- 13:57Speaker 1: send me a text, and you may hear yourself your
- 14:00Speaker 1: voice on the next episode of After Party. You might.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You might hear me read your text as well. Again,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you get a call or you get a text to
- 14:06Speaker 1: make that happen. Six one seven nine oh six six
- 14:08Speaker 1: six three eight answered the question of the week, Who
- 14:11Speaker 1: are some of the most wildly underrated singer songwriters? All Right,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I will have more recommendations next week, but I wanna
- 14:20Speaker 1: just quickly say that I finished Chuck Hogan's Gangland and
- 14:25Speaker 1: I already missed Nikki Pins. I want to also just
- 14:28Speaker 1: let you know that I can't stop listening to this
- 14:30Speaker 1: song by the Eric Legnini leg Nini Eric Legnini Trio
- 14:36Speaker 1: called Don't let Me Be Lonely Tonight, And I invite
- 14:39Speaker 1: you to find that song and listen to it too,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and just you know, be sad with me, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: sad in the sophisticated kind of way. Okay, So damn you,
- 14:46Speaker 1: Eric Ignini, whoever the hell you are, I can't stop
- 14:49Speaker 1: listening to the song. You knocked it out of the park.
- 14:52Speaker 1: It's tremendous. If you guys want more recommendations from me,
- 14:54Speaker 1: get into the Patreon chat hit me up there. I'll
- 14:57Speaker 1: give you a couple more coming up next, music and
- 15:00Speaker 1: musicians you want to talk about with your voicemails, text,
- 15:03Speaker 1: dms and more. All right, we're back. Apple podcast listeners, listen.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Make sure you got auto downloads turned on so you
- 15:29Speaker 1: don't miss any disgrace Land episodes right now. You know
- 15:32Speaker 1: where I'm at. I'm in the phone booth. It's the
- 15:34Speaker 1: one across the hall. I'm hanging on the telephone six
- 15:36Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six sixty six three eight voicemail
- 15:40Speaker 1: and text for you guys to get in touch with me.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Make your voice be heard here on Disgraceland. Get me
- 15:45Speaker 1: the stories you want to hear, the stories you want
- 15:48Speaker 1: to tell, the stories you want to talk about. Just
- 15:51Speaker 1: like this listener in the six one two.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Hey Jake, what's going on? This is Nathan from Minneapolis.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Thoroughly enjoyed the repl Isman's episode. They're like rock gods
- 16:03Speaker 2: here in Minneapolis.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Just awesome.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Also, the Van Aalen episodes are amazing. That is my
- 16:09Speaker 2: favorite band of all time. But your question was who
- 16:13Speaker 2: is the most punk country artist? I'm gonna ask to
- 16:17Speaker 2: go with Whalen Jennings. I mean, the guy was a badass.
- 16:20Speaker 2: He played with Buddy Holly. I mean the whole coin
- 16:24Speaker 2: flip where he wasn't on the plane where he crashed.
- 16:27Speaker 2: That's that's that's crazy story right there. I got a
- 16:31Speaker 2: chance to see Whalen Jennings Lollapalooza nineteen ninety six des Moines, Iowa.
- 16:38Speaker 2: It was amazing. They played with Metallica, Rancid, Psychotica, Soundgarden.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I mean, that was an amazing lineup.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Absolutely crazy.
- 16:50Speaker 2: But thanks, podcast is awesome.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Rock and ROLLO.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Thanks man, but rock and ROLLA Nathan, thanks for calling in.
- 17:00Speaker 1: H First of all, thanks for your very kind comments
- 17:03Speaker 1: about the replacements of Van Halen episodes. But man, Waylon
- 17:07Speaker 1: Jennings at Lollapalooza in ninety six, I vaguely remember that.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't think, I don't think. I
- 17:14Speaker 1: don't think my memory ever would have gotten there if
- 17:15Speaker 1: you didn't bring it up. That must have been incredible.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was I went to that Lollapalooza, But I went
- 17:20Speaker 1: to Rhode Island in ninety six and I don't remember
- 17:24Speaker 1: Wayland Jennings, but you know they had different artists playing
- 17:26Speaker 1: at different parts of the country. Thanks for the call,
- 17:29Speaker 1: appreciate you. Nathan Guys is responding to the question of
- 17:32Speaker 1: the week from last week, which artist, which country artist
- 17:35Speaker 1: is the most punk rock? And of course that comes
- 17:37Speaker 1: from our Whitland Jennings episode that is live right now
- 17:39Speaker 1: for you to listen to. Nathan clearly did. Let's check
- 17:43Speaker 1: out the two seven oh see what their answer is
- 17:45Speaker 1: to the same question.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Hey, Jay seven Todd, I love all your questions, but
- 17:51Speaker 3: I especially love this one, the one about the which
- 17:55Speaker 3: country stars the most punk rock? Because, after all, what's
- 17:58Speaker 3: more punk rock than Whalen Jennings, George Jones or Johnny
- 18:03Speaker 3: Cash or any of these outlaw guys, more gangster, more
- 18:07Speaker 3: hardcore than any hip hop artist or hair metal guy
- 18:11Speaker 3: or whoever you want to name. But anyway, in a
- 18:15Speaker 3: close one, I'll probably go with Johnny Cash, pretty punk
- 18:19Speaker 3: rock guy for his time, especially and I mean closed,
- 18:23Speaker 3: you could go with Whalen. It's all interchangeable. One of
- 18:26Speaker 3: my favorite rock stars. Mike Ness Social Discortion, good podcast subject.
- 18:33Speaker 3: He was kind of a combo of Johnny Cash and
- 18:36Speaker 3: Joe Strummer. Also honorable mention. Maybe it's cheating a little.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Graham Parsons jump suits with marijuana. Lee's his best friend
- 18:48Speaker 3: was Keith Richards. He died in some crazy dramatic way,
- 18:52Speaker 3: not that that's good. And then the whole Joshua or whatever,
- 18:56Speaker 3: the burning of the body out in the desert thing,
- 18:58Speaker 3: pretty punk rock anyway. Thank you so much for all
- 19:02Speaker 3: your content. I'll look forward to it all the time.
- 19:05Speaker 1: See you two seven O Todd appreciate you. Lots to
- 19:08Speaker 1: get into there. First of all, I'll try to go backwards.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Graham Parsons, the story of Graham Parsons. We we get
- 19:13Speaker 1: into that thoroughly in Disgraceland and in my book. Let's
- 19:19Speaker 1: just tell my son, my eleven year old, about Graham
- 19:22Speaker 1: Parsons the other day. I left out some choice details
- 19:24Speaker 1: once that you had here, you know, the whole Kaufman
- 19:27Speaker 1: Road mangler, Joshua Tree, burning of the body thing, uh,
- 19:30Speaker 1: social distortion, Mike Ness love Mike Ness loved that solo
- 19:34Speaker 1: record he put out back in I believe the nineties,
- 19:36Speaker 1: late nineties. Johnny Cash, Joe Strummercambo that's a good way
- 19:39Speaker 1: of describing Mike Ness. I'd like to do a Mike
- 19:41Speaker 1: Ness episode at some point. I feel like there's a
- 19:43Speaker 1: lot from that eighties LA Hardcore scene that I have
- 19:47Speaker 1: not died diet dove dove into, I have not submerged
- 19:50Speaker 1: myself into as of yet, and there's there's a lot
- 19:53Speaker 1: of stories out there. So thanks for prompting me. I
- 19:56Speaker 1: love that about this. That's what I love about this community,
- 19:58Speaker 1: you guys. I wouldn't I thought of Mike Ness in
- 20:01Speaker 1: an LA punk hardcore eighties episode today at all if
- 20:05Speaker 1: it were not for your call here to seven O Todd.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Appreciate you guys, be like two seven O Todd. Hit
- 20:11Speaker 1: me up six one seven nine oh six six six
- 20:14Speaker 1: three eight, voicemails, text, get answer the question of the week.
- 20:18Speaker 1: You can you can even just you know, tell me
- 20:19Speaker 1: about something you want to hear. You can tell me
- 20:21Speaker 1: about something you've already heard and then you like me
- 20:23Speaker 1: to tell So it's all kinds of different ways into
- 20:25Speaker 1: these conversations. Four one two called in brought up David
- 20:29Speaker 1: allen Coe at some point four one two I will
- 20:31Speaker 1: do a David allen Coe episode. I'm not ready to
- 20:34Speaker 1: do that yet six oh five? Now, six oh five,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I have one, let's kind of one two three messages
- 20:42Speaker 1: from Jenner Jennifer voicemails from Jennifer in the six oh
- 20:45Speaker 1: five uh. In the first two she makes a strong
- 20:49Speaker 1: case for a blind Blind Melon episode, and Jennifer, I
- 20:53Speaker 1: will have you know, Matt, we just recorded a Blind
- 20:58Speaker 1: Melon episode, and I believe Matt it's coming up. Correct
- 21:01Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong with that. It's an exclusive episode.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Correct, Yeah, Jake, that is an exclusive all Access episode.
- 21:08Speaker 4: It's actually last month's All Access episode. It's available right
- 21:13Speaker 4: now in the all Access feed. We've got an episode
- 21:16Speaker 4: on Blind Melon and shannonhon.
- 21:18Speaker 1: All right, thank you, my friend Jennifer. As Matt says,
- 21:21Speaker 1: this is an exclusive episode, You're going to be an
- 21:23Speaker 1: exclusive all Access member to hear the blind Mellon episode. Sorry,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but you know good news is it's really simple to
- 21:29Speaker 1: become an all Access Remember it's just five bucks a month,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and you get more than that Blind Melon episode. You
- 21:33Speaker 1: get a new episode like the Alice Cooper one this month,
- 21:35Speaker 1: you get a new one every month, and you get
- 21:36Speaker 1: ad free listening to Disgrace Land and Hollywoodland. So you know,
- 21:39Speaker 1: go sign up, go to disgrace landpod dot com slash membership.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Don't be afraid, Jennifer, have no fear. You might not
- 21:47Speaker 1: hear that all access member of Blind Melon, but you're
- 21:49Speaker 1: gonna hear your voice.
- 21:51Speaker 5: This is Jennifer against is a three to three.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Oh.
- 21:53Speaker 5: I want to also mention colective fault. There are so
- 21:56Speaker 5: many I can mention to you. I'm a radio DJ
- 22:00Speaker 5: and a live radio DJSON about two thousand and nine
- 22:04Speaker 5: somewhere in there anyways, so there as well. I wanted
- 22:08Speaker 5: to answer the question though, of this you, which was
- 22:10Speaker 5: who is the most punk in the country genre? Who
- 22:14Speaker 5: was the most and that would have to be Dwight
- 22:16Speaker 5: Yoakum White. Yoakum was found in a punk band in
- 22:20Speaker 5: the punk scene when they pulled him out and said, hey,
- 22:24Speaker 5: come seek country for us. So you know gonna make
- 22:27Speaker 5: a moolah, You're going to do it. Take care, rock a.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Rolla, Jennifer. Collective Soul. I don't know about Collector. I
- 22:35Speaker 1: don't know anything about Collective Soul, So I'm not sure
- 22:37Speaker 1: there's an episode in the works there. But if you
- 22:38Speaker 1: got some dirt, you got some stories, you got something dramatic,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you get something that is not part of the popular
- 22:44Speaker 1: sort of zeitgeist, you know, rock history. Something I can
- 22:49Speaker 1: dig my teeth into, the collective soul, something crimy about
- 22:52Speaker 1: all means get in touch. You mentioned County Crows in
- 22:54Speaker 1: one of your earlier voicemails that I didn't play, and yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: maybe maybe, I'm sure there's some stuff there. I saw
- 23:03Speaker 1: this great interview with Adam Durretz on Instagram the other day.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I don't know who he was being interviewed by, but
- 23:10Speaker 1: he was talking about his time as a bartender at
- 23:13Speaker 1: the Viper Room and I thought that's good. And he
- 23:17Speaker 1: was talking about Gibbey from Butthole Surfers teaching him how
- 23:19Speaker 1: to make ribs. I was like, Oh, that's some good stuff.
- 23:23Speaker 1: So yeah, maybe accounting Crows episode. Then you get the
- 23:25Speaker 1: whole friends connection. I like all that stuff, so that
- 23:27Speaker 1: that could be cool. Thank you, Jennifer, Jennifer real quick
- 23:30Speaker 1: on Dwight Yoakam. Dwight Yoakum would be a great episode
- 23:33Speaker 1: as well. Guitarists Cadillacs, hillbilly music, love me some Dwight,
- 23:37Speaker 1: love me some tight some tight faded blue jeans. Okay,
- 23:40Speaker 1: those long legs, those cowboy boots. You know what I'm
- 23:44Speaker 1: talking about, Jennifer, Don't act like you don't. All right, guys,
- 23:47Speaker 1: be like Jennifer and get in touch. Six one seven
- 23:49Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. You know why,
- 23:51Speaker 1: because you, guys, you know that music history does not
- 23:54Speaker 1: have to be boring. You know that you've got a
- 23:56Speaker 1: line on these crazy ass stories just like I do.
- 23:59Speaker 1: You did, and you call, and you dig, and you
- 24:02Speaker 1: text and you dig and you DM and then we
- 24:04Speaker 1: get into it, and then we have this great, wonderful
- 24:07Speaker 1: library of incredible storytelling for music history that's all in
- 24:12Speaker 1: part because of you, guys, and I truly appreciate it.
- 24:14Speaker 1: On this whole dig baby dig things, You dig baby
- 24:17Speaker 1: dig dig, dig baby digs. Why's that hard for me
- 24:19Speaker 1: to say? Dig baby dig thing? That we talked about
- 24:22Speaker 1: for the first time? Last week, I got an email
- 24:25Speaker 1: from a gentleman by the name of Scott, who, Hey,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I loved your off the cuff comment about a dig
- 24:31Speaker 1: Baby Dig T shirt. I put the normal logo on front,
- 24:35Speaker 1: pocket size, and I put this on the back and
- 24:38Speaker 1: Scott here from the six two three sent in a
- 24:43Speaker 1: T shirt design that he made, and I dig it. Scott,
- 24:46Speaker 1: looks like you might have used a little artificial intelligence
- 24:49Speaker 1: here because that logo is not the actual logo of Scott,
- 24:52Speaker 1: so I can't use that. But I am inspired by
- 24:55Speaker 1: your inspiration, my friend, and we have the uh. We
- 24:59Speaker 1: have the monkeys over here at double el of his
- 25:01Speaker 1: headquarters digging in right now as we speak, whipping up
- 25:04Speaker 1: some dig Baby dig designs. I'll have that for you
- 25:07Speaker 1: guys soon to take a look at. Probably have some
- 25:09Speaker 1: designs you guys would choose from. I'll put them up
- 25:11Speaker 1: on Patreon. We can get into it, decide which ones
- 25:14Speaker 1: we like, and then I'll get some I don't know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: maybe shirts, maybe hats. We'll see, I don't know. We'll
- 25:18Speaker 1: see what the merch monkeys come back with. But Scott
- 25:21Speaker 1: appreciate the email. This's Grace Sapod at gmail dot com.
- 25:23Speaker 1: You guys want to email me about anything like Scott
- 25:25Speaker 1: b like Scott, email me can also text me six
- 25:28Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight three
- 25:31Speaker 1: eight six texts and Root Boys Slim in the sex
- 25:33Speaker 1: change band. Root Boy's life is totally insane and the
- 25:36Speaker 1: fact that he got a major record deal from WB
- 25:39Speaker 1: I'm assuming that's Warner Brothers, and had some high caliber
- 25:41Speaker 1: musicians on his albums, both with the SCB and solo
- 25:45Speaker 1: is ridiculous because the songs are ridiculous but also somehow
- 25:49Speaker 1: infectious as hell. Stephen Daytona, Stephen Daytona, you sound like
- 25:53Speaker 1: a character in an Elmore Leonard book. And uh, that's cool.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I've never heard of Route Boy Slim in the sex
- 26:02Speaker 1: Change Band. Are you fucking with me, Stephen Daytona. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: just wanted to say, Stephen Daytona again. Hold on, I
- 26:09Speaker 1: am I seeing this right? Hold on? Oh man, I am.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I'm just seeing this. In the middle of reading Stephen
- 26:18Speaker 1: Daytona's email there, I got a notification here Ozzy Osbourne
- 26:25Speaker 1: has died. This is Tuesday. I mentioned that earlier that
- 26:28Speaker 1: I'm recording. This is Tuesday, July twenty second, damn man,
- 26:34Speaker 1: seventy six years old, and of course just weeks after
- 26:38Speaker 1: the Black Sabbath farewell show. Ozzy Osbourne for me one
- 26:43Speaker 1: of a kind, for sure, the first heavy metal I
- 26:46Speaker 1: ever heard. I remember hearing iron Man probably is a
- 26:49Speaker 1: five year old and I'm one of my buddy's moms
- 26:53Speaker 1: had that record. Mom, she had that record, And of
- 26:55Speaker 1: course we all love the sort of you know, robotic
- 26:58Speaker 1: voice in the beginning as a young kid. And I
- 27:02Speaker 1: heard that song the other day actually, when I was
- 27:04Speaker 1: driving with my son, and it was in the breakdown
- 27:07Speaker 1: part in the middle of the song, and that rhythm section,
- 27:10Speaker 1: the Black Sabbath rhythm section, is just crushing it. That
- 27:14Speaker 1: song has become, I don't want to say a novelty,
- 27:16Speaker 1: but it became this thing that gets played at hockey games.
- 27:19Speaker 1: But the musicianship on it is incredible. Ozzy Osbourne lots
- 27:25Speaker 1: to say about Ozzy Osbourne. People have said a ton
- 27:28Speaker 1: They filled books about Ozzie, They've made documentaries about Ozzie.
- 27:32Speaker 1: We've made an episode on Ozzie, plus a Black Sabbath
- 27:35Speaker 1: episode as well. And one of the things that I
- 27:37Speaker 1: feel like does not get mentioned enough when it comes
- 27:40Speaker 1: to Ozzy Osbourne is the fact that he was an
- 27:45Speaker 1: incredible singer, Just an incredible singer, and an incredible melodicist.
- 27:51Speaker 1: That is that the right word, Matt, melodicist, you know
- 27:54Speaker 1: what I mean? Just those melodies unbelievable. One of the
- 28:00Speaker 1: things that I always think about, and I started thinking
- 28:03Speaker 1: about this as an adolescent and when I first heard
- 28:07Speaker 1: Black Sabbath, and by the time I was an adolescent teenager,
- 28:10Speaker 1: I kind of knew a little bit about music, and
- 28:13Speaker 1: I had this thought then somebody probably it probably came
- 28:15Speaker 1: from somebody else, and I just don't remember who it was.
- 28:19Speaker 1: But you know, Ozzie's main influence was the Beatles. Black
- 28:22Speaker 1: Sabbath came out in the late sixties, early seventies. How
- 28:26Speaker 1: do you get from the Beatles to Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath?
- 28:31Speaker 1: How do they do that? And I know Tonyaomi, bill Ward,
- 28:37Speaker 1: Geezer Butler, they obviously, you know, had so much to
- 28:41Speaker 1: do with the creative spark of that band. But Ozzie
- 28:45Speaker 1: did as well, and he gets he's been characterized as
- 28:48Speaker 1: this madman, and he's known for his wild antics and
- 28:51Speaker 1: the whole thing with the bat and the biting off
- 28:53Speaker 1: the head of the all that stuff, But it doesn't
- 28:55Speaker 1: erase the fact that what he created at the time
- 29:00Speaker 1: was almost completely novel. Nobody had done that before he
- 29:04Speaker 1: was part of that. And his voice is completely unique.
- 29:07Speaker 1: It's singular in the history of rock and roll, in
- 29:10Speaker 1: the history of music. And he'll be remembered forever and
- 29:13Speaker 1: for good reason. Just a tremendous, tremendous musician, tremendous life.
- 29:19Speaker 1: And uh, he's going to be missed by so many,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and I love that they got these concerts off in
- 29:24Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks before he passed away. My
- 29:28Speaker 1: heart goes out to his kids, to his wife, the
- 29:30Speaker 1: rest of his family, to all the bandmates who played
- 29:33Speaker 1: with him both throughout his solo career. Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne,
- 29:39Speaker 1: Rest in peace. You know we're supposed to We're supposed
- 29:41Speaker 1: to release those sex Pistols episodes this weekend. Matt Ah.
- 29:48Speaker 1: I'm thinking maybe we release we re released the Ozzy
- 29:51Speaker 1: Osbourne in the Black Sabbath episodes, maybe in reverse or order,
- 29:54Speaker 1: Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath, Excuse Me and then Azzy and
- 29:59Speaker 1: just kind of do our own little tribute here to
- 30:02Speaker 1: the Prince of Darkness. Save the sex Pistols for another time.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Like I said, I'm hearing this in
- 30:09Speaker 1: real time as I'm recording, and I got a notif
- 30:12Speaker 1: I said I got a notification that's not entirely accurate.
- 30:15Speaker 1: What actually happened was I got a text from one
- 30:17Speaker 1: of you guys from the seven to four our ip
- 30:20Speaker 1: to Ozzy. Thursday's after party is gonna hit different when
- 30:23Speaker 1: you mentioned it. Yeah, you're right, definitely feel strange to
- 30:28Speaker 1: get this get this information in the midst of a recording.
- 30:32Speaker 1: But as every great entertainer will tell you, Ozzy Osbourne included,
- 30:37Speaker 1: the show must go on. It's rule number one. So
- 30:41Speaker 1: with that, we're gonna take a quick break and we'll
- 30:43Speaker 1: be back in the flash. All right, we our back,
- 31:00Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen here in the after party. Ozzy Osbourne
- 31:03Speaker 1: has passed away. We just got this news, and the
- 31:06Speaker 1: skies have opened up outside the studio. It's pouring rain
- 31:10Speaker 1: right now. You might be able to hear some of
- 31:11Speaker 1: that rain, Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath style and the opening
- 31:15Speaker 1: seconds little thunder, little rain, and the opening seconds of
- 31:21Speaker 1: Ozzy Osborne's great debut. I think it's I think it's apropos.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I could wait until the rain dies down, but I'm
- 31:28Speaker 1: not gonna. I'm just gonna. I'm just gonna record here
- 31:30Speaker 1: in honor of Ozzy Osbourne. But like I said at
- 31:33Speaker 1: the end of that last block, the show must go on,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and we're gonna do a little bit of business here.
- 31:37Speaker 1: We've got to get into our sixty second sports rant
- 31:40Speaker 1: and under thirty seconds where you guys indulge me, you
- 31:43Speaker 1: give me just a little teensy bit of space to
- 31:46Speaker 1: vent on what's happening in sports this week, because yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 1: I'm a music guy, and I'm a books guy, and
- 31:51Speaker 1: I'm a movies guy. Sure, but I'm also a sports guy.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And this week's sixty second sports rant and under thirty
- 31:56Speaker 1: seconds is once again brought to you by five Hour Energy,
- 31:58Speaker 1: so big thanks to them. I was up late last
- 32:01Speaker 1: night on purpose. Okay, golf this past weekend. Once again
- 32:04Speaker 1: I was not good, but five Hour Energy's new transfusion
- 32:07Speaker 1: flavor it helped all right, and I was at least
- 32:09Speaker 1: better on the putting green than the Red Sox were
- 32:11Speaker 1: in the tenth inning last night. Matt, are we rolling here?
- 32:14Speaker 1: Let's get that buzzy beeater going. Okay, let's do this
- 32:16Speaker 1: because I'm definitely rolling here. First of all, Okay, Red
- 32:18Speaker 1: Sox should have won that game in the ninth inning
- 32:21Speaker 1: against the Phillies on Monday night. But then they end
- 32:24Speaker 1: up in extras in the tent and I get that, okay,
- 32:26Speaker 1: but to lose in extra innings on catcher interference is pathetic.
- 32:31Speaker 1: The Red Sox should be jamming with that five Hour
- 32:33Speaker 1: Energy transfusion flavor. You know, you know, what I'm saying
- 32:36Speaker 1: nine other baseball players and five Hour Energies Transfusion Flavor
- 32:39Speaker 1: is inspired by golf on official cocktail. It's the hints
- 32:41Speaker 1: of grape and lime and ginger, but Narvez. Come on, man,
- 32:45Speaker 1: there's no alcohol in transfusion. Head to your local retailer
- 32:48Speaker 1: or www. Dot five hour energy dot com to order
- 32:51Speaker 1: yours today. Give yourself some extra energy out on the
- 32:53Speaker 1: golf course or even in the tenth inning if you're
- 32:55Speaker 1: a sleeping Red Sox catcher. All right, Matt, how'd I do?
- 32:58Speaker 1: Did I maintain my streak? Jake? The training?
- 33:01Speaker 4: The five hour Energy it's paying off thirty nine seconds,
- 33:05Speaker 4: so we're getting close to that goal.
- 33:08Speaker 1: A big improvement from last week. Let's keep it up,
- 33:10Speaker 1: all right? Well like the Red Sox, better luck next time. Okay.
- 33:15Speaker 1: That was the sixty second sports rant and under thirty
- 33:17Speaker 1: seconds sponsored by five Hour Energies New Transfusion Flavor with
- 33:20Speaker 1: as much caffeine as a premium cup of coffee with
- 33:23Speaker 1: zero sugar and a compact bottle. Five Hour Energy is

- 33:33Speaker 1: Transfusion flavor available in stores or online at www Dot
- 33:37Speaker 1: five hour Energy dot com. All right, before I tell you, guys,
- 33:40Speaker 1: this is Waylon Jennings Cocaine Bear story, I got to
- 33:43Speaker 1: remind you that over in the Hollywood Land Feed there's
- 33:46Speaker 1: a new episode on Jane Mansfield, and there's a new
- 33:48Speaker 1: rap party bonus episode with Me and Zeth talking Anton LaVey,
- 33:52Speaker 1: Corey Ham, Bonnie, Prince Billy and a whole bunch more
- 33:55Speaker 1: So you're not gonna want to miss that. All right, Now,
- 33:58Speaker 1: I mentioned the cocaine Bear Whalen Jenning story that's only
- 34:01Speaker 1: coming to your ears if you're Ozzy Osbourne and can
- 34:03Speaker 1: listen in from the astral plane, or if you're a
- 34:06Speaker 1: Disgrace Sland All Access member and you will therefore be
- 34:10Speaker 1: granted access into the after after party here in a Minute,
- 34:13Speaker 1: which of course has a cover charge of only five
- 34:15Speaker 1: dollars a month and also gets you unlimited commercial free
- 34:17Speaker 1: listening to Disgrace Land and Hollywood Land, and you get
- 34:20Speaker 1: that extra full episode of Disgraceland per month, plus access

- 34:28Speaker 1: if you crave that little extra something, that little extra
- 34:30Speaker 1: community buzz for me and your fellow Disgrace Sland listeners
- 34:33Speaker 1: back in the flash. All right, welcome back to the
