- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, Ryan Ripkin is here with us right now. We're
- 0:04Speaker 1: talking Orioles. You can follow him at Ryan Ripkins Show
- 0:07Speaker 1: on Twitter and then also just type that right into
- 0:09Speaker 1: YouTube and you can check out his show all about
- 0:12Speaker 1: baseball and the Baltimore Orioles, which are the hot topic
- 0:14Speaker 1: right now. Ryan, Good to see you here. I saw
- 0:16Speaker 1: you briefly at the Winter Meetings. In the scramble. I
- 0:20Speaker 1: was like half sprinting over to get to the set
- 0:22Speaker 1: in time. I'm always that guy. But anyway, good to
- 0:25Speaker 1: see you here. And a lot's changed since I saw you.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Pete Alonzo added to the mix your thoughts.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, of course that happens when I'm leaving. I left
- 0:35Speaker 2: Tuesday night and I was hoping there'd be a little
- 0:37Speaker 2: bit of action. It was good to see you, though,
- 0:39Speaker 2: Scott and you were hustling. But I got to say
- 0:44Speaker 2: in Baltimore, for the Baltimore fan base, they've been waiting
- 0:47Speaker 2: for a move to happen, right And I've gotten a
- 0:49Speaker 2: lot of texts from people saying this is the most
- 0:51Speaker 2: fun off season. All of a sudden, it wasn't fun
- 0:54Speaker 2: maybe twelve hours prior whenever it was, or twenty four
- 0:57Speaker 2: hours when Kyle Schwarber signed back to the Phillies. Everyone
- 1:00Speaker 2: goes here. Here, the O's are again. They're not landing
- 1:03Speaker 2: the big guy, even though we all felt that Kyle
- 1:06Speaker 2: schwarber best fit was back with the Phillies. But it's
- 1:10Speaker 2: proved that the Orioles are going for it. They're in it,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and they needed a guy that posts up. They need
- 1:16Speaker 2: a guy that you can plug in no concerns. And
- 1:19Speaker 2: when they lost Santon Dare the year prior, that was
- 1:23Speaker 2: their leading RBI offensive guy the past three seasons. And
- 1:27Speaker 2: now you're getting Pete Alonzo that's averaging forty jacks one
- 1:30Speaker 2: hundred and twenty ribbies over that timeframe. So I love it,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and I think the bigger indication is whether it works
- 1:37Speaker 2: out for five years or not. You know, time will tell,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but it's showing the fan base and future free agents
- 1:43Speaker 2: that Baltimore is going to continue to be aggressive and
- 1:46Speaker 2: I believe they're far from done here as we continue
- 1:49Speaker 2: on the rest of this offseason.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Obviously, we want them to get pitching, That's that's obvious,
- 1:54Speaker 3: But does this signing of a position player, which they
- 1:58Speaker 3: went out and got Tyler and Neil last year and
- 2:00Speaker 3: felt like that wasn't great use of their money, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: then Ramon Lariano, Now you have a marquee free agent.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Is there any indication that this could make a Gunner
- 2:09Speaker 3: Henderson and Adlie Rutchman a one of these young stars
- 2:13Speaker 3: maybe sign an extension, like, Hey, why am I gonna
- 2:16Speaker 3: sign an extension? None of my buddies are gonna be here.
- 2:18Speaker 3: But now you have a power bat that's going to
- 2:23Speaker 3: hit in front of or behind one of those guys
- 2:25Speaker 3: that they haven't extended to this point.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I think one of the underlying things is that, uh,
- 2:33Speaker 2: Alonzo's a Boris guy, and so the Orioles, if we
- 2:37Speaker 2: want to do the math here, they got quite a
- 2:38Speaker 2: few Boris guys on that team, Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg,
- 2:41Speaker 2: Gunner Henderson. Now Gunner's gonna it's gonna cost the Os
- 2:48Speaker 2: maybe like a full Uh. They're gonna have to bring
- 2:51Speaker 2: a bank to get Gunner, And I don't know what
- 2:53Speaker 2: that's gonna look like for him, but I do think
- 2:55Speaker 2: it sends a message that one the Orioles have said, Hey,
- 2:59Speaker 2: we're willing to Scott and all of your clients. We
- 3:01Speaker 2: want you to be in Baltimore. We want our guys
- 3:04Speaker 2: to be in Baltimore, and I think that is the
- 3:07Speaker 2: messaging here, you know, the crazy thing here for the Orioles.
- 3:09Speaker 2: If you look at the deals that have been done
- 3:11Speaker 2: over time, this is the second largest contract in Orioles history.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Chris Davis was the big one. Then now it's Pete
- 3:18Speaker 2: Alonzo and then there's a huge discrepancy between Pete Alonzo's
- 3:22Speaker 2: contract to the third highest. So yeah, I think that
- 3:26Speaker 2: this is going to open up the doors at the
- 3:28Speaker 2: end of the day. You know, I was talking with
- 3:30Speaker 2: a few people about the Kyle Schwarber dial just for
- 3:33Speaker 2: one second, is when you're looking at organizations of why
- 3:36Speaker 2: you want to sign somewhere or extend, do you see
- 3:40Speaker 2: the vision moving forward and do you see that the
- 3:42Speaker 2: team is going to put the resources in to help
- 3:45Speaker 2: players accomplish what they want to do. Because what do
- 3:47Speaker 2: players want? They want to secure their future with a
- 3:50Speaker 2: contract and they want to go win. And so when
- 3:53Speaker 2: you looked at the teams in on Shoreber, if they
- 3:55Speaker 2: were saying, you know, the Phillies, the Pirates, the Reds,
- 3:58Speaker 2: the Orioles. Of those two tames, only the Phillies had
- 4:01Speaker 2: proven that they were gonna go out there and spend
- 4:04Speaker 2: now Baltimore saying hey, hey, we're willing to do this.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Now we got the core Westy Gunner Jackson, we want
- 4:13Speaker 2: you here long term. And I do think that that's
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to open up the avenue for them moving into
- 4:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty six. But I know they still got to
- 4:20Speaker 2: add a couple pieces here at free agency and then
- 4:23Speaker 2: we'll look towards next year to see what happens.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Yeah, talking about that, I mean, now it's basically on
- 4:29Speaker 4: the pitching, Like who who do you think they trade
- 4:32Speaker 4: for or trade out of to get a starting pitcher?
- 4:35Speaker 4: I mean, Adlely Mountcastle, Like there's there's a bunch of
- 4:38Speaker 4: guys that they can do it for. They need some
- 4:40Speaker 4: starting pitching.
- 4:42Speaker 2: They certainly do, so, I mean, if I uh, I
- 4:46Speaker 2: don't think it's rocket science to say that the Oils
- 4:48Speaker 2: have a few guys that can play first base this
- 4:50Speaker 2: year and Pete Alonzo's gonna be taking up the majority
- 4:54Speaker 2: of those reps, because why the dude just plays every
- 4:57Speaker 2: single day. So if that's gonna be the case and
- 5:00Speaker 2: you're looking at who else you have, Sam Beasaio is
- 5:03Speaker 2: gonna get at bats at first in dh Adley Rutchman,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't think is going anywhere. I want to put
- 5:08Speaker 2: that the rest they need Adlee and Adley bounce back.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I believe in that. But then you're looking at Mayo
- 5:15Speaker 2: and Mountcastle and you know, Maunie when I was in
- 5:18Speaker 2: the organization playing Mounted was the best bat I saw
- 5:21Speaker 2: at the time coming through just pure bat to ball skills.
- 5:24Speaker 2: But he's lost some confidence and he's had trouble staying healthy,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and he's also doesn't have the years of control that
- 5:30Speaker 2: teams want. Then there's Kobe Mayo, and Kobe I think
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think he's gonna hit. I think he's gonna figure
- 5:38Speaker 2: it out, but he's gonna have to get it bats.
- 5:40Speaker 2: So I think of the trade pieces, Mayo has more
- 5:43Speaker 2: value when it comes to team control. So you heard
- 5:46Speaker 2: the rumors about you know, Edward Cabrera, Mackenzie Gore, guys
- 5:50Speaker 2: that have team control and have that upside to be
- 5:53Speaker 2: let's just say they're a third on a staff, but
- 5:55Speaker 2: have an upside to be a one. Not gonna go
- 5:58Speaker 2: that far to say as a one, but they have
- 5:59Speaker 2: the upside too. You know, uh, Kobe and a couple
- 6:02Speaker 2: guys I could see happening, But the reality is something
- 6:06Speaker 2: has to give, and I think what michaelis and the
- 6:09Speaker 2: front office realized that last year they wanted to see,
- 6:13Speaker 2: with the crop of players that they had that they
- 6:15Speaker 2: had developed, who was going to be a part of
- 6:18Speaker 2: their plan and who was going to take that next step.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And the reality is, you know, they might have gotten
- 6:23Speaker 2: some of those questions answered and others might be undefined,
- 6:27Speaker 2: but they can't wait any longer. I think that's the
- 6:30Speaker 2: bigger part they need to win. Look at the rest
- 6:33Speaker 2: of the Al East, it's a gauntlet. Toronto's window is
- 6:36Speaker 2: wide open. The Red Sox and Yankees, they don't rebuild,
- 6:39Speaker 2: they retool. And then the Rays are the team that
- 6:42Speaker 2: they're just gonna be a pain in the butt because
- 6:44Speaker 2: they just they play the game hard and they find
- 6:47Speaker 2: ways to stay competitive. So yeah, it's to me they're
- 6:51Speaker 2: gonna trade one of those guys mount of or Mao
- 6:54Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised with either, and then they're gonna going
- 6:57Speaker 2: out and get a They're gonna go out and sign
- 6:59Speaker 2: a guy. I see the tweet up there. Yeah, I
- 7:01Speaker 2: truly believe like the ale least and this is why
- 7:04Speaker 2: I love the Winter right this division. If you are
- 7:09Speaker 2: for real, you gotta go out there and spend you
- 7:11Speaker 2: got to go out there and make moves. So I
- 7:13Speaker 2: for sure think Baltimore is at least going to make
- 7:17Speaker 2: two more moves here before we get towards spring training.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I mean two big moves to be uh specific.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Does Pete need to be what they were going after
- 7:27Speaker 3: Kyle Schwarber for Kyle Schwarber, Oh, this amazing leader. He
- 7:31Speaker 3: leads this clubhouse, He leads young guys. That's why the
- 7:34Speaker 3: Reds wanted them. Does Pete need to be that in
- 7:37Speaker 3: this clubhouse of young guys that are now kind of
- 7:41Speaker 3: not that young in experience, Like you said, it's time
- 7:44Speaker 3: to go now. But so does he need to be that?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Or does he just need to be forty homers on
- 7:48Speaker 3: a team that only had somebody that hit seventeen was
- 7:51Speaker 3: the highest.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I mean, well, the first thing is he has to
- 7:56Speaker 2: He's going to take the brunt of it right, He's
- 7:59Speaker 2: expected to post up the ballpark. The ball is gonna
- 8:02Speaker 2: leave the ballpark early and often with him. And he's
- 8:05Speaker 2: your RBI guy. And I've talked to a lot of
- 8:08Speaker 2: people about this. I know some people say, hey, RBI
- 8:11Speaker 2: is that it's a byproduct of where you are miss
- 8:15Speaker 2: me with that you're an RBI guy or you aren't.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And Pete Alonzo is an RBI guy. And what I
- 8:21Speaker 2: said last year for the Orioles going into the season,
- 8:23Speaker 2: because they had question marks on the pitching side, but
- 8:25Speaker 2: they had this young talent and the motto that I
- 8:29Speaker 2: had was they go as far as their young core
- 8:31Speaker 2: takes them. And they struggled. And now the pitching was tough,
- 8:35Speaker 2: but the offense was supposed to be their strength and
- 8:37Speaker 2: it wasn't. So the addition of Pete Alonzo what it
- 8:40Speaker 2: really does take the pressure off these guys that develop
- 8:43Speaker 2: still at the big league level. There's gonna be stress
- 8:46Speaker 2: and pressure, but you don't have to be the guy anymore.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I mean, right now, Pete Alonzo is gonna be one
- 8:52Speaker 2: of those guys, Taylor Ward is gonna be one of
- 8:54Speaker 2: those guys, and then Gunner Henderson can slot in be
- 8:57Speaker 2: that third for you. Oh and by the way, Jordan Wesper,
- 9:01Speaker 2: he looks ready to go. So I think the addition
- 9:03Speaker 2: more than anything, it just takes the pressure off of
- 9:06Speaker 2: the guys having to prove something while they're still trying
- 9:10Speaker 2: to figure out how to be a big leaguer. I
- 9:12Speaker 2: think that. That's something that people underestimate is that you
- 9:16Speaker 2: might have all the talent in the world, but when
- 9:18Speaker 2: you have expectations that are on you and not just
- 9:21Speaker 2: expectations like they're expecting you to be the reason why
- 9:25Speaker 2: the Orioles win. Bring in Pete Alonzo, bringing Taylor Ward
- 9:30Speaker 2: and then Gunner and Westy, Well, then let those other
- 9:33Speaker 2: guys like Cowser and Jackson and Adley get back on track.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And this lineup can be really dangerous because of that.
- 9:42Speaker 3: All right, there's what if they're losing games eight to
- 9:46Speaker 3: seven because the rest of this offseason, like you just said,
- 9:50Speaker 3: the American League East is gunning after some pitching, the
- 9:53Speaker 3: American League East is gunning after the rest. You can't
- 9:56Speaker 3: just continue to add to your position players if they
- 10:00Speaker 3: don't add to the pitchers. You said they're gonna add
- 10:02Speaker 3: to the starting rotation. But you know, I get that
- 10:05Speaker 3: in five dollars, and I got five dollars at the
- 10:07Speaker 3: end of the off season. If it doesn't happen.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Well, I hear you. I see what you're trying to
- 10:13Speaker 2: spend here. But I can say pretty confidently you know
- 10:17Speaker 2: they're not gonna get burned twice. I would be shocked.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is last year they
- 10:23Speaker 2: were trying to figure some things out. And I think
- 10:25Speaker 2: one part that people are missing when new ownership comes in.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Some of it it's hitting the ground running. Others is
- 10:32Speaker 2: let's assess what we have and go from there. With
- 10:36Speaker 2: what happened last year, it's stung so deeply and it
- 10:39Speaker 2: was deep rooted in Baltimore. Everything that Michael I said
- 10:43Speaker 2: on his wish list has happened so far except starting Pitcher.
- 10:47Speaker 2: They will make another move. It's not not a maybe,
- 10:51Speaker 2: it's it's a guarantee. They will go get another guy.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I think that they get too for all the reasons
- 10:57Speaker 2: that they mentioned. And this is even for the long term.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It we're talking about building momentum Baltimore, even with the
- 11:04Speaker 2: down here last year. If we look in that division,
- 11:06Speaker 2: they make a couple moves Baltimore just like Toronto, Boston,
- 11:11Speaker 2: New York, they can win the AL East, and not
- 11:13Speaker 2: only win the East, they could go to the World Series.
- 11:15Speaker 2: So I think the urgency is there. Uh And I
- 11:18Speaker 2: think the best lesson is learning from the past. And
- 11:22Speaker 2: I know that michaelas in the front office, took a
- 11:24Speaker 2: lot of heat last year, but one thing I want
- 11:26Speaker 2: people to understand is there was a reflection period and
- 11:30Speaker 2: going I I didn't do enough. I messed up, and
- 11:34Speaker 2: his actions now have to speak louder. And so far
- 11:36Speaker 2: his actions are showing he's learned a lot. But when
- 11:41Speaker 2: the deal's done, people feel a lot better. But I
- 11:43Speaker 2: I know moves coming, and I'm just curious on uh
- 11:46Speaker 2: if I'm right on who it's.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Going to be.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Uh uh, well, tod father, I mean, you do your thing,
- 11:53Speaker 1: but I also I mean your Todd father, So can
- 11:55Speaker 1: you little can you bry a prediction out of him?
- 11:58Speaker 4: That?
- 11:58Speaker 2: That's what?
- 11:59Speaker 4: That was my next question I was gonna say, I
- 12:01Speaker 4: say this al least is stacked. If people are going
- 12:04Speaker 4: left and right, who's gonna be the next team to
- 12:06Speaker 4: get after? You know a Bellinger? You know Bregman, But yeah,
- 12:11Speaker 4: I don't know. Give me, give me something you think
- 12:13Speaker 4: that might happen unless you're trying to keep it hidden
- 12:16Speaker 4: for Christmas?
- 12:17Speaker 5: No, you say about for all for all teams here
- 12:20Speaker 5: or just like give me your thoughts first, and then
- 12:23Speaker 5: what do you think about the last who's gonna be
- 12:25Speaker 5: the next big gun going to a big team?
- 12:28Speaker 2: Just from understanding it? Toronto looks like they're gonna land.
- 12:32Speaker 2: They're either bringing back Bow in my opinion, or Tucker
- 12:36Speaker 2: right because you know, talking to Mark Shapiro, president of operations,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I remember last year I talked to him to beginning
- 12:41Speaker 2: spring or the season, and he said, we're a big market.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I think people don't recognize that, and they've been in
- 12:48Speaker 2: on guys. And then who's the first big pitcher to sign.
- 12:51Speaker 2: It's Dylan Ce to Toronto. I would be shocked if
- 12:55Speaker 2: if they don't land Baschett or Tucker. But then I
- 12:59Speaker 2: look at the they need someone with Judge, they need
- 13:02Speaker 2: someone and and Bellies. I believe that I'm hearing the
- 13:06Speaker 2: years in dispute. If they really like him and he's versatile,
- 13:09Speaker 2: you make it work and and it's hardball right now,
- 13:12Speaker 2: but that that seems like a good fit there. And
- 13:14Speaker 2: then there's Boston where Bregman makes the most sense because
- 13:18Speaker 2: it's comfortability. Could the trademarket happen? You hear Martell, You
- 13:23Speaker 2: hear names thrown out there. The Red Sox like to
- 13:25Speaker 2: be strategical, but they need a big bat like I.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I would like to say that those guys go where
- 13:32Speaker 2: I expect them to. But if We're going off of
- 13:34Speaker 2: what we just talked about and looking at the construction
- 13:37Speaker 2: of the Al East and if the Red Sox, the Yankees,
- 13:40Speaker 2: the Blue Jays, and Orioles want to be for real,
- 13:43Speaker 2: you got to keep up. And those are the big names.
- 13:46Speaker 2: The one I'm really curious about, though, of the free agents,
- 13:49Speaker 2: is what's gonna happen with Ran Ervaldez. You know, talk
- 13:54Speaker 2: about a guy that can that can tip the tip
- 13:57Speaker 2: how people feel. And I know with everything that happened
- 13:59Speaker 2: in Houston and down the stretch there, you know, is
- 14:02Speaker 2: that a worry? Is that a concern? If you're not
- 14:04Speaker 2: concerned and he goes out and does this thing, He's
- 14:07Speaker 2: the top arm still available. So I'm really curious. But
- 14:12Speaker 2: that's that's my gut. I think that a lot of
- 14:14Speaker 2: the big names stay in the Al East. I'd be
- 14:17Speaker 2: shocked if they don't, because the Yankees, we've seen it.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Aaron Judge is not human, but he needs help, so yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 2: he needs help, and and the and the Yankees already
- 14:28Speaker 2: got an unbelievable pitching staff. So we'll see and maybe
- 14:31Speaker 2: off off times, I can, uh, we can talk more
- 14:34Speaker 2: about some moves, but I'm I'm expecting things to get
- 14:38Speaker 2: to get a buzz in here in the next few days.
- 14:41Speaker 3: You you you were kind of leading in and we
- 14:44Speaker 3: I mean, I gotta I gotta ask when you heard
- 14:47Speaker 3: Robert Suarez signed, were you fearful that your possible prediction
- 14:52Speaker 3: was a Suarez that wasn't going to the Orioles. Is
- 14:54Speaker 3: that your is that your prediction of who you think
- 14:57Speaker 3: the Orioles are gonna sign?
- 14:58Speaker 2: And Ranger Suarez? Oh? Man, Well, I will say this.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I if we're looking at value and you're looking at
- 15:08Speaker 2: you know, just opportunity, what you get out of someone
- 15:12Speaker 2: risk reward. I thought Ranger Suarez to Baltimore was as
- 15:19Speaker 2: as great of an opportunity because here's the reason. When
- 15:23Speaker 2: you look at the other guys, like if you're looking
- 15:24Speaker 2: at Zach Allen, you're looking at Framber Valdez, you're looking
- 15:27Speaker 2: at any of those other pitchers, they probably got better
- 15:30Speaker 2: overall stuff. Ranger Suarez knows how to pitch, and you know,
- 15:33Speaker 2: it's how to pitch in big games, and for the
- 15:36Speaker 2: Orioles you need consistency overall. So I just thought it
- 15:41Speaker 2: was a best fit. But then you wonder, you know,
- 15:43Speaker 2: if Mackenzie Gore becomes available, do the Nats and Orioles
- 15:46Speaker 2: make the first trade in the in the history between
- 15:48Speaker 2: the two teams, perhaps, but I just for the Orioles,
- 15:52Speaker 2: what I think they need is dependability and consistency. The
- 15:55Speaker 2: two guys that fit that mold right now are either
- 15:57Speaker 2: Framburg or Ranger, and Ranger is going to be the
- 15:59Speaker 2: cheap So I just think it makes a lot of
- 16:03Speaker 2: sense with Ranger, Suarez and whoever it is, having Kyle
- 16:07Speaker 2: bradish back. I think people don't realize how good bradish is.
- 16:11Speaker 2: He was my one teammate where I watched him and said,
- 16:14Speaker 2: thank goodness, I never have to face you in the minors.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And then Trevor Rodgers, if he's seventy percent of what
- 16:21Speaker 2: he was factored in with one of these guys, Baltimore
- 16:24Speaker 2: oriol Staff is going to look really good.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Okay, I know what Kratz wants to do. He wants
- 16:30Speaker 1: to spend Baltimore's money, right, But I'm going to try
- 16:33Speaker 1: and be the middleman here and be realistic. For my
- 16:35Speaker 1: final question, I'm with you. One starter from the market
- 16:39Speaker 1: two I don't think is very realistic, Like are they
- 16:42Speaker 1: going to get Ranger Suarez and Framber Baldez or tatsu
- 16:45Speaker 1: am I right, I think one of those guys goes
- 16:48Speaker 1: to Baltimore, but Ryan, for me, I still need another
- 16:52Speaker 1: ideally top end guy, a one, two or three, a
- 16:54Speaker 1: guy that can pitch in a playoff game for them.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And I do think you mentioned Gore, that's a good name.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I still think they might be able to pry away
- 17:01Speaker 1: someone like Freddy Peralta for the right package. So who
- 17:04Speaker 1: do you think contains the most value that they can
- 17:07Speaker 1: afford to lose?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Is it Kobe Mayo?
- 17:09Speaker 1: Is his value still high enough that they can swing
- 17:12Speaker 1: a deal for one year Freddy? And maybe you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: an a ball or more of a high ceiling, low
- 17:18Speaker 1: level prospect. They've done business like that before, right, they
- 17:22Speaker 1: did Joey Ortiz and d L. Hall and I think
- 17:24Speaker 1: a pick a compick for Corbyn Burns and that actually
- 17:28Speaker 1: worked out really well for them. I know they didn't
- 17:30Speaker 1: win a playoff ya in that year, but it wasn't
- 17:32Speaker 1: Corbin's fault.
- 17:34Speaker 2: For sure. Yeah, Burns are shoving, you know in the playoffs.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I think the Orioles pitching staff will out three runs
- 17:40Speaker 2: in that game and the Royals walked out that series win.
- 17:44Speaker 2: That's a sensitive spot. So we'll move past that. But
- 17:47Speaker 2: overall overall, Freddy peralta great pitcher, you know. But I
- 17:54Speaker 2: think for the Orioles, if you trade for Freddy you
- 17:58Speaker 2: want to find a way to extend him. This time
- 18:00Speaker 2: Corbyn go which you know Corbyn want to go to Arizona.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Players have their own priorities and it made sense. But
- 18:07Speaker 2: I think for the Orioles, if you get Peralta, you'd
- 18:09Speaker 2: have to extend him. Guys with team control, that seems
- 18:14Speaker 2: more of the option. But when you're saying about who's
- 18:16Speaker 2: the most valuable, I think it depends on how you
- 18:19Speaker 2: view Kobe Mayo, because he's big league ready, he needs
- 18:22Speaker 2: it bets, So Kobe right now would probably have the
- 18:25Speaker 2: most value. And then the Orioles just got a ton
- 18:27Speaker 2: of pitching prospects over the last trade deadline here, right,
- 18:30Speaker 2: so they could package some things together depending on the
- 18:33Speaker 2: team that they're talking to. So the Brewers Kobe Mayo
- 18:36Speaker 2: could be enticing and it doesn't have to take as much.
- 18:40Speaker 2: But if you're talking about the Gnats, for instance, for Gore, hypothetically,
- 18:43Speaker 2: you know they're in a little bit more of a rebuild,
- 18:46Speaker 2: so if they do that, they might want some of
- 18:48Speaker 2: those young, appealing arms that are maybe a year or
- 18:50Speaker 2: two away but still want to headline with a big bet.
- 18:54Speaker 2: So I think answer for me, Kobe Mayo still has
- 18:56Speaker 2: the most value, but it just to be determined on
- 18:59Speaker 2: what they do. I think mount Castle. While I think
- 19:03Speaker 2: I believe Mountie can bounce back in the right situation,
- 19:07Speaker 2: he's not gonna be under contract for much longer. So yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 2: I think that's the need. But Peralta, only if you
- 19:13Speaker 2: extend him. I think elsewhere would make more sense for Baltimore,
- 19:18Speaker 2: at least at least for what what I've mentioned so far. Right,
- 19:22Speaker 2: good stuff.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I love your insight, and you know how the baseball
- 19:24Speaker 1: world works. Whenever you're away or something else is going
- 19:27Speaker 1: on in life, that's when everything will happen. It's always
- 19:29Speaker 1: how it works, dude. The amount of times like we're
- 19:31Speaker 1: on air for hours and hours and then it's Saturday
- 19:33Speaker 1: night at eleven thirty pm and an agent smartly connects
- 19:38Speaker 1: with an owner who's having a cocktail or two and
- 19:40Speaker 1: they get the job done.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Just the way it works. Scott about to be on
- 19:44Speaker 2: a plane in about a couple hours. Here, I there
- 19:48Speaker 2: will be a move while I'm in the air. And
- 19:50Speaker 2: I'm going this is fantastic with that. Hey, the baseball
- 19:52Speaker 2: world don't sleep, but it's fun. But I appreciate you
- 19:55Speaker 2: guys and Scott. We'll have more time to catch up
- 19:59Speaker 2: next time when we're not running around in the future.
- 20:02Speaker 2: But I appreciate you guys. Thank you. Yeah, you too.
- 20:05Speaker 1: And one more plug at the back end here for everyone.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Ryan does this all the time, so check it out
- 20:09Speaker 1: on YouTube on his socials Ryan Rifkin Show, super easy
- 20:12Speaker 1: to find. He knows what he's talking about here with
- 20:15Speaker 1: the super dialed in. Thanks again, Ryan, and save travels.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Thanks guys, appreciate it.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Todd Father Pete Alonso earned his nickname the Polar Bear
- 20:31Speaker 1: by being friends with you. Let's just be real about it.
- 20:34Speaker 4: You gave him the nickname.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And now he's in Baltimore. It's a little bit warmer
- 20:39Speaker 1: down in Baltimore compared to New York, a little bit
- 20:41Speaker 1: tougher for a polar Bear, but maybe easier for a
- 20:43Speaker 1: polar Bear with less of the New York heat and
- 20:46Speaker 1: a team that was super disappointing. He goes to a
- 20:47Speaker 1: different team in Baltimore that was disappointing this past season.
- 20:50Speaker 1: But hey, you were on top of the Orioles as
- 20:53Speaker 1: much as anyone. Todd Father, you were like, this is
- 20:55Speaker 1: not a playoff team. You said that a year ago.
- 20:57Speaker 1: What do you think about Pete's departure? Take me through
- 20:59Speaker 1: all of this, since you know Pete quite well.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, well, I'm first going to say here.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Once the news broke, I had to text my son,
- 21:08Speaker 4: he's a monster Mets fan, and I said, Blake, I said,
- 21:12Speaker 4: I'm very sorry your favorite player just got traded. And
- 21:17Speaker 4: he said, what was the zach words? Are fake news?
- 21:20Speaker 4: Fake news, fake news? And I said, no, Bud, I
- 21:23Speaker 4: said he's gone and he's going to the Orioles. And
- 21:26Speaker 4: didn't get a text back. So I told my wife,
- 21:28Speaker 4: I said, please text Blake and make sure he's okay.
- 21:31Speaker 4: So he's doing better now. The I got so much,
- 21:34Speaker 4: so many messages and calls about it. I had. I
- 21:37Speaker 4: had a baseball practice that night. People were talking about
- 21:40Speaker 4: it left and right. We need a new team, this
- 21:42Speaker 4: and that. The fans. The fans aren't happy. I know that.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I know that. I know the fans are disgusted with
- 21:48Speaker 4: Stearns and trying to figure out what the heck is
- 21:51Speaker 4: their next move. I don't know what their next move is.
- 21:54Speaker 4: But I am very happy for Peter Alonzo. I couldn't
- 21:56Speaker 4: be more happier for the guy because of what he
- 21:58Speaker 4: went through the last couple of years. He deserved more
- 22:01Speaker 4: in New York. He did, he did. He deserved a
- 22:03Speaker 4: big contract there. They should have gave it to him.
- 22:06Speaker 4: He was in absolute stud He's always been. He's always
- 22:08Speaker 4: been dominant. He's always had a lot of home runs.
- 22:12Speaker 4: He's he's been around the block, a hundred RBI guy
- 22:15Speaker 4: each and every year. He does stuff around the city.
- 22:18Speaker 4: He's very he does a lot of charity work. He
- 22:21Speaker 4: helps out kids with special needs. He you know, gives
- 22:25Speaker 4: money to you know, the nine to eleven victims. He's
- 22:29Speaker 4: done so much for that city and for him, you know,
- 22:31Speaker 4: not to get a big contract and stay there for
- 22:33Speaker 4: the rest of his career, I think that's pretty sad.
- 22:36Speaker 4: But at the same time, knowing Pete, I'm very excited
- 22:38Speaker 4: for him. He's got a new venture going on. It's
- 22:41Speaker 4: very hard to stay with one team your whole life nowadays,
- 22:44Speaker 4: especially the way it is. You know, he can't have
- 22:45Speaker 4: all you know, Kim all be Joey Vados of the world.
- 22:50Speaker 4: It's so hard to do, and for him to go there,
- 22:52Speaker 4: he can actually breathe a little bit and enjoy the
- 22:55Speaker 4: game of baseball and not worry about anything else. Happy
- 22:58Speaker 4: for him, man, good for him.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Do you feel like he was offended by the Mets,
- 23:04Speaker 1: not just this go round, but even last go round
- 23:06Speaker 1: where the Mets are like, me, we don't think you're
- 23:08Speaker 1: going to get much in the market. We have a
- 23:11Speaker 1: certain value on you. And so it ends up being
- 23:14Speaker 1: that essentially one year contract. It was the longer deal
- 23:17Speaker 1: with the opt out and he ops out, of course,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and then this time around they didn't make an offer,
- 23:23Speaker 1: and there's more to the story there. It's not like
- 23:25Speaker 1: they wouldn't have brought him back, but they were only
- 23:27Speaker 1: bringing him back at a certain price. They clearly looked
- 23:30Speaker 1: at him and said, hey, at your age, your skill set,
- 23:34Speaker 1: your best skill set, by far, is your power. Nobody
- 23:37Speaker 1: is disputing that he's not the fastest dude in town.
- 23:40Speaker 1: There's disputes about his defensive value, but he's not an
- 23:43Speaker 1: elite defender. I think that's fair to say either. So
- 23:45Speaker 1: they're like, we don't see this working out well where
- 23:47Speaker 1: we're just relying on pop. And it's funny that Ryan
- 23:49Speaker 1: Ripkin brought up Chris Davis, who had that one tool
- 23:54Speaker 1: and eventually it didn't work out for him. There are
- 23:56Speaker 1: others like Kyle Schwarber, who's two years older than Pete,
- 23:59Speaker 1: who lives and dies off walks and pop right. He
- 24:02Speaker 1: doesn't even played defense, and it's working out pretty damn
- 24:04Speaker 1: well for him. I tend to think that eventually Pete
- 24:07Speaker 1: will transition off of first during the length of this
- 24:10Speaker 1: contract and still hold that value as a guy who
- 24:12Speaker 1: can hit forty homers. They don't have Mount Baltimore there anymore,
- 24:15Speaker 1: so it's a little bit easier right to be able
- 24:17Speaker 1: to tackle Baltimore. It's actually a better hitters park in
- 24:20Speaker 1: Baltimore than it is in New York. I think those
- 24:23Speaker 1: numbers can tick up anyway. Back to what I said,
- 24:25Speaker 1: do you think he's offended? I mean, he's the all
- 24:28Speaker 1: time home run leader for the Mets and they didn't
- 24:31Speaker 1: really want him back.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I you know my opinion, only I think he was.
- 24:35Speaker 4: I think he was a little pissed off, and rightfully so.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Rightfully so you see all these guys getting these big contracts.
- 24:42Speaker 4: He deserved it just as much as anybody else did.
- 24:44Speaker 4: I mean, and people always go back to the defense.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I don't think he's even not you people go by
- 24:51Speaker 4: numbers and he can't get to this ball. But I
- 24:53Speaker 4: don't think he's that bad of a defender either. I
- 24:55Speaker 4: think he's worked his butt off. I think, if I'm
- 24:58Speaker 4: not mistaken, he was one of the best first basement
- 25:00Speaker 4: I'm picking balls out of the dirt the last couple
- 25:02Speaker 4: of years. The guy works his butt off at first base,
- 25:05Speaker 4: and this Baltimore oriol team should be a static because
- 25:09Speaker 4: he's gonna work his rear end off, he's gonna get
- 25:12Speaker 4: after it, and he's gonna absolutely mash balls to every
- 25:15Speaker 4: part of that park and he's not gonna care what
- 25:18Speaker 4: the Mets do. It's not that term now, it's not
- 25:20Speaker 4: oh yeah, I'm doing this because of the Mets. Now
- 25:22Speaker 4: he's over with, he got his deal, he got everything
- 25:25Speaker 4: he needs now and he can just chill out. You know,
- 25:28Speaker 4: New York is a tough place to play out and
- 25:29Speaker 4: he took it by storm and did excellent there. And
- 25:33Speaker 4: to not bring a guy like him back, there's something
- 25:35Speaker 4: else going on, and I you know, we might never
- 25:38Speaker 4: hear about it, but there's something else that why wouldn't
- 25:41Speaker 4: you sign this guy to a big deal last year.
- 25:43Speaker 4: I just I still don't understand it. So that's something
- 25:46Speaker 4: that they're gonna have to live with, and I don't honestly,
- 25:48Speaker 4: I don't think they care. I really don't think they
- 25:51Speaker 4: care that they don't have them. They've said it before.
- 25:53Speaker 4: If it doesn't work out like this, good riddance pretty much,
- 25:56Speaker 4: and I think that's a shame Todd for me.
- 25:59Speaker 1: The Mets were like, hey, this was a disaster result.
- 26:03Speaker 1: We did not make the playoffs. We need to switch
- 26:06Speaker 1: things up. My question is why these guys. You're best
- 26:10Speaker 1: reliever by far, who's been consistently reliable. You're consistently reliable
- 26:15Speaker 1: power hitter, and Nimo's a consistently reliable guy who gets
- 26:19Speaker 1: on base. And I know the defense isn't supreme, the
- 26:21Speaker 1: arm's not great, the range is fine. So for me,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm just looking at these guys like, why them? Just
- 26:26Speaker 1: because they're hitting free agency? And I guess there was
- 26:29Speaker 1: a taker for Brandon Nimo. What are your thoughts on
- 26:32Speaker 1: the way that they're trying to change the complexion of
- 26:35Speaker 1: the team. I'm all for making some changes to the lineup.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's why I'm critical of even a team like the
- 26:40Speaker 1: Phillies Todd Father. I just think when you have super
- 26:42Speaker 1: disappointing results in the playoffs back to back years, I
- 26:44Speaker 1: want to just see a little difference in the lineup.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And maybe I'm wrong there. I'm looking at this more
- 26:48Speaker 1: as a fan. You know all these guys personally, like,
- 26:52Speaker 1: were these the guys to switch it up with or
- 26:54Speaker 1: should they be looking in other directions in terms of
- 26:57Speaker 1: who they were going to let loose?
- 27:00Speaker 4: And I'm confused too. You you signed Wan Soto to
- 27:02Speaker 4: this monster deal. All in, We're all in, and now Nemo,
- 27:07Speaker 4: Edwin Diaz and I know the couple were free agents.
- 27:09Speaker 4: I get it, but that should have been your top
- 27:11Speaker 4: priority getting those guys back in my like you don't.
- 27:15Speaker 4: There's not that many guys out there that have the
- 27:17Speaker 4: ability of what Pee Alonso can do to a baseball game.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Edwin Diaz one of the best closers that we've seen
- 27:23Speaker 4: in our generation. He's filthy, so hard to hit. Yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 4: he's been through his bumps, but guess what, that guy's
- 27:29Speaker 4: been very very good. Brandon Neimo, the guy is solid.
- 27:34Speaker 4: He's solid as all can be. Those are three top
- 27:36Speaker 4: guys that any team would take in a heartbeat, and
- 27:41Speaker 4: just because you didn't make the playoffs, you had this
- 27:42Speaker 4: catastrop fall. Okay, catastrophic excuse me fall. Listen, it happens.
- 27:48Speaker 4: That's baseball, your professional baseball players. You're playing against professional
- 27:52Speaker 4: teams that are very good at what they do. Come on, man,
- 27:56Speaker 4: I just don't get it. That should have been your
- 27:57Speaker 4: top priority training. Brandon Nemo was weird. I didn't understand
- 28:01Speaker 4: that one at all. And I think Jeff McNeil's on
- 28:03Speaker 4: the is the next one that's gonna go. Love Jeff.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I mean he's he's closely. He's a three hundred hitter.
- 28:08Speaker 4: He led the league one year in UH batting average.
- 28:12Speaker 4: All right, now you're not all in. Now, what are
- 28:14Speaker 4: you gonna do? What is the next step for the Mets?
- 28:17Speaker 4: There's not that many out there? And guess what those
- 28:19Speaker 4: guys got to say, you know what, I'll come there,
- 28:21Speaker 4: But who would want to go there? And now, knowing
- 28:22Speaker 4: what they do, I don't know.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's a good point, and I'm with you.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I think McNeil's gonna go at least for now, the
- 28:29Speaker 1: way that they're looking at first base. We'll throw this
- 28:32Speaker 1: out here from Tim Healy. He joined us on Yesterday Show.
- 28:35Speaker 1: You can check out Yesterday Show for more on Tim
- 28:38Speaker 1: Healey stucks because he covered this team for a long
- 28:39Speaker 1: time and then he just recently switched over to the
- 28:42Speaker 1: Red Sox peat. But he said the Mets always seemed
- 28:45Speaker 1: lukewarm at best about bringing back Pete this offseason. One
- 28:48Speaker 1: first base solution they floated internally a platoon of Jeff McNeil,
- 28:53Speaker 1: who can play everywhere, and free agent Paul Goldschmidt. Kratz,
- 28:57Speaker 1: Mets fans did not take kindly to that backup plan.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And Steve Cohen is already on the record, and I
- 29:03Speaker 1: give him credit. He always comes out there and says
- 29:05Speaker 1: something or tweets something, and he's like, off season is young,
- 29:08Speaker 1: my friends. I think they're going to do a lot.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I think the plan for them was, We're just going
- 29:13Speaker 1: to do a lot differently. We're still going to spend
- 29:15Speaker 1: a lot, it's just going to look different. So in
- 29:17Speaker 1: your mind, Kratz, what does that look like? I do
- 29:20Speaker 1: like that he came out right. Owner comes out and says,
- 29:22Speaker 1: we're not just shedding players and shedding salary, We're just
- 29:25Speaker 1: switching things up. So stay tuned for me. I think
- 29:28Speaker 1: that means they signed someone like a Tatsuya am I,
- 29:31Speaker 1: a friend Rivaldez. Maybe they're going after Ranger Suarez, who
- 29:34Speaker 1: has pitched really well within the division. And then on
- 29:38Speaker 1: the offensive side, I mean they need an outfielder. Are
- 29:40Speaker 1: they in play for Cody Bellinger? Is that the right fit?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Could they be in play for Alex Bregman to handle
- 29:45Speaker 1: third base? I know that they like Beatty, but obviously
- 29:48Speaker 1: Alex Bregman is a better player and can make a
- 29:50Speaker 1: different type of impact internally with a team. Akamoto I
- 29:54Speaker 1: really like. I think he's going to be a really
- 29:55Speaker 1: good player in the big So help me fill in
- 29:57Speaker 1: the blanks here. Knowing that the team is clearly will
- 30:00Speaker 1: to spend.
- 30:01Speaker 3: I'm as confused as you are, as confused as Mets
- 30:06Speaker 3: fans are. And my thing is, I don't really care
- 30:10Speaker 3: how you replace Pete Alonzo because it's not gonna happen.
- 30:13Speaker 3: You can't replace forty home runs. You cannot replace somebody
- 30:17Speaker 3: that will give you forty home runs. Devin Williams in
- 30:21Speaker 3: his best year, hasn't had didn't have as many saves
- 30:25Speaker 3: as what Edwin Diaz had last year, so they can't
- 30:29Speaker 3: try to play catch up in that sense. But what
- 30:32Speaker 3: they can do is understand they still have Francisco Indoor.
- 30:36Speaker 3: I think Mark Ventos is an above average hitter, maybe
- 30:39Speaker 3: not at third base. Maybe a combination of Ventos at
- 30:43Speaker 3: first baby at third gives them a nice, youthful corner
- 30:49Speaker 3: infields that grow together, guys with a lot of potential.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But ultimately, I think the lineup, and I know this
- 30:56Speaker 3: might be crazy saying you lost Pete Alonzo, the lineup
- 30:59Speaker 3: might be fine. The lineup still might be fine. They're
- 31:03Speaker 3: gonna add another big I think they're still gonna add
- 31:05Speaker 3: another big bat. That's where I'm not worried about. If
- 31:08Speaker 3: they brought Diaz back, if they brought Pete Alonzo back,
- 31:12Speaker 3: it wouldn't matter. If they don't do something about the
- 31:14Speaker 3: starting pitching. The reason they're not in the playoffs, if
- 31:17Speaker 3: they're changing everything up, is because they weren't in the playoffs.
- 31:20Speaker 3: The reason that happened is because they did not get
- 31:24Speaker 3: starting pitching last year. Nolan McClain is not the answer.
- 31:28Speaker 3: I mean, he's gonna be a great Bigley pitcher. He
- 31:31Speaker 3: is not enough. He is not Oh saved all of
- 31:34Speaker 3: our issues. Those are pieces McClain, Peterson. I think seam
- 31:40Speaker 3: and Iya can give you can give you something. I
- 31:42Speaker 3: know it faded at the end, but you still have
- 31:44Speaker 3: him there. He had a good run in twenty four.
- 31:48Speaker 3: It has to start with starting pitching. I don't care
- 31:51Speaker 3: about replacing those other guys. It has to start with
- 31:54Speaker 3: starting pitching, and it has to be big, and it
- 31:56Speaker 3: has to be multiple starting pitchers.
- 32:00Speaker 1: What do you think about Wilson Contreras to fill in
- 32:03Speaker 1: for Pete Alnto.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I love it.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I said before the show Todd Father Decratz that it
- 32:08Speaker 1: was like at the tip of my tongue and the
- 32:10Speaker 1: only thing that held me back was something that's kind
- 32:12Speaker 1: of dumb. You know, Wilson Contreras can be explosive on
- 32:16Speaker 1: the field and kind of get into it with UMP's
- 32:19Speaker 1: teams whatever. I don't really care. I don't know why
- 32:21Speaker 1: I thought about that where it's like, oh, the Mets
- 32:23Speaker 1: need a new mix. Maybe Wilson Contreras brings fire. I mean,
- 32:26Speaker 1: he seems like a perfect fit. He had a really
- 32:29Speaker 1: good offensive year. Dude knows how to get on base,
- 32:32Speaker 1: He's got pop, and he learned first base really well.
- 32:35Speaker 1: He grated out as one of the better first basemen
- 32:37Speaker 1: defensively in his first year on the job. We spoke
- 32:40Speaker 1: to Ali Marmole about it, and he said he took
- 32:43Speaker 1: to the position so well. They had Alec Burlison as
- 32:45Speaker 1: a backup option, and they were like, we were worried
- 32:48Speaker 1: just in case it doesn't work out, and we got
- 32:50Speaker 1: it mostly dh Wilson. They didn't need to he took
- 32:53Speaker 1: to it. Well, you're shaking your head. He doesn't cost
- 32:56Speaker 1: a lot. I'm not saying this is the only solution.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I'm just saying that is a much more attractive solution
- 33:02Speaker 1: to me than Paul Goldschmidt and Jeff McNeil handling a
- 33:06Speaker 1: platoon at first. Wilson Contreras is a legit bat. It's
- 33:10Speaker 1: not Pete Pop. But that's a guy who's going to
- 33:12Speaker 1: be a well above average offensive player and he should
- 33:17Speaker 1: be a better defender.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with you on that. I just think
- 33:23Speaker 4: New York is a different beast. I'm not saying he
- 33:25Speaker 4: couldn't handle it, but that one time he makes any
- 33:28Speaker 4: little mistake and they get on him in the news
- 33:30Speaker 4: or you know, the press after the game presses him
- 33:35Speaker 4: about a certain situation. I don't know. It's just not
- 33:38Speaker 4: for everybody. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good fit.
- 33:41Speaker 4: But I just feel like, you know, seeing you know
- 33:44Speaker 4: he is, he's a fireball brother, and you don't know
- 33:46Speaker 4: what he's gonna do. I'm not saying he couldn't do good,
- 33:48Speaker 4: but he's not putting up the numbers like Peter Alonzo does.
- 33:50Speaker 4: So that's where it's hard for me to say yes
- 33:53Speaker 4: to that. But I also agree with what you're saying.
- 33:56Speaker 4: It would it would be a fixture for sure.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it'd be better than McNeil and Paul Goldschmidt. I
- 34:03Speaker 3: one hundred percent agree with that, and I love to
- 34:06Speaker 3: put this to rest from Orioles fans for Mets fans,
- 34:09Speaker 3: Oh Pete stinks at first base. First baseman's outs above
- 34:13Speaker 3: average defensive war is all dictated on your positioning the
- 34:19Speaker 3: Mets play and what's called a predominant shift for the
- 34:23Speaker 3: first basement, so he is going as far to his
- 34:26Speaker 3: right as possible and never takes a step to his right.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Guys in history who have the better defensive metrics at
- 34:35Speaker 3: first base are allowed to shift because all your outs
- 34:39Speaker 3: above average is just dictated on where you start and
- 34:43Speaker 3: where the ball is hit. If you never go one direction,
- 34:47Speaker 3: then you're never going to get points that direction, and
- 34:49Speaker 3: you're going to be dinged because there's not many outs
- 34:53Speaker 3: above average that you can get at first base. So
- 34:56Speaker 3: Pete is not an awful first baseman. He's average. Wilson
- 35:00Speaker 3: is athletic. And the only issue I have is I
- 35:04Speaker 3: don't think the Mets said, you know what, we're not
- 35:08Speaker 3: going to sign Pete because we can get Wilson Contreras.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I have an issue with the with the next step
- 35:15Speaker 3: to replace Pete. If they already had their answer out there,
- 35:20Speaker 3: you don't know that you're getting Wilson, or maybe they
- 35:22Speaker 3: did know they would be getting Wilson Contreres, but it
- 35:24Speaker 3: hasn't happened yet, so you can't say, ah, you know what,
- 35:29Speaker 3: we'll just find it. Well, we'll figure it out. Pete
- 35:32Speaker 3: had a one fifty ops plus and Wilson had a
- 35:36Speaker 3: one twenty seven.
- 35:37Speaker 2: That's totally fine.
- 35:38Speaker 3: You know, I think you need a plan when you're
- 35:41Speaker 3: talking about a player like Pete to replace in your lineup.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Okay, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if it
- 35:48Speaker 1: ends up being Contreras or Akamoto for first and both
- 35:52Speaker 1: of them should please the David Stearns concern of defense
- 35:58Speaker 1: and age. Whether you guys agree with it or not,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I'm just presenting what clearly is in the mind of
- 36:03Speaker 1: the decision maker in the front office. And then it
- 36:07Speaker 1: could still be a Bellinger, a bragman who knows, maybe
- 36:10Speaker 1: even a Kyle Tucker. They could sneak in and say, hey,
- 36:13Speaker 1: you know what, we really like this guy. He fits
- 36:16Speaker 1: more of the mold of what David Sterns likes all
- 36:19Speaker 1: around player age fits what they're looking for. Let's just
- 36:22Speaker 1: have a billion and a half dollar outfield.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Well, yeah, they got to want to go there too,
- 36:28Speaker 4: And I think the only one of the biggest factors
- 36:31Speaker 4: is money. If they're going to put the big money
- 36:33Speaker 4: on the table, yeah they'll they'll go there. But it's
- 36:35Speaker 4: if it's between a couple other teams with all the
- 36:37Speaker 4: craziness going on over there. I just don't I don't
- 36:40Speaker 4: see it in my opinion.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Starting pitching, that's it. I don't care if you get Bellinger.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Bellinger can play center field for him, fills that hole.
- 36:49Speaker 3: He can play first base, fills that hole. Starting pitching
- 36:53Speaker 3: does not matter. You need starting pitching or else, it's
- 36:57Speaker 3: a failed off season no matter who you get. Rid
- 36:59Speaker 3: of or who you bring in.
- 37:01Speaker 1: They're going to get starting pitching. That's the one part
- 37:04Speaker 1: that I'm not worried about. You don't think they're going
- 37:06Speaker 1: to end up with one of the guys that they
- 37:08Speaker 1: can just buy on the free agent market. Starting pitching wise,
- 37:11Speaker 1: you don't think they're going to end up with one
- 37:13Speaker 1: of the four to five available.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Who's to say you had?
- 37:18Speaker 2: You have to prove it.
- 37:19Speaker 3: You can't just be like, oh, yeah, you know what
- 37:22Speaker 3: tiger stripes are always you know, he's definitely going to
- 37:25Speaker 3: go to a five year deal, a seven year deal
- 37:28Speaker 3: for a starting pitcher that's out there. He hasn't he
- 37:31Speaker 3: hasn't even come.
- 37:31Speaker 1: From You're right, You're right. I haven't thought of it,
- 37:33Speaker 1: even though I talk about it all the time.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Craft. How many years is he going to go? That's
- 37:41Speaker 1: the internal battle. How many years is he going to
- 37:43Speaker 1: go on a starter? And if not, you have to
- 37:45Speaker 1: trade for one, and then it's going to cost just
- 37:50Speaker 1: prospect capital. You know what's funny is they need to
- 37:52Speaker 1: do what Baltimore does. They I think they need to.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Everyone's going to get two starters they feel good about
- 37:59Speaker 1: in the rotation, but they do they do need to. Yeah,
- 38:02Speaker 1: it's just it's a team that has a lot of
- 38:03Speaker 1: work to do. The indication is be patient, but they're
- 38:08Speaker 1: going to do a lot. So let's see, it's only
- 38:11Speaker 1: December eleventh. Some people don't realize the Winter meetings have
- 38:14Speaker 1: no deadline. The teams do not give a.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Crap I.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Meet, what are you calling?
- 38:22Speaker 4: Just like in poker, I call the Mets. Call whatever
- 38:25Speaker 4: you're gonna do. Let's see what you got mm hmm.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 38:29Speaker 2: They got plenty of time.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Gotta want to go there, got don't want to go there.
- 38:33Speaker 4: That's that's my biggest problem. You gotta want to go
- 38:36Speaker 4: to those places.
