Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm getting really angry reading these stories about violence in
- 0:03Speaker 1: New Zealand, and I don't think that harsher sentences are
- 0:07Speaker 1: going to stop them. I don't think that the gang
- 0:10Speaker 1: patch ban is going to stop them. I don't think
- 0:13Speaker 1: that wrap around services are going to stop them either.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm talking here about Palmeston North Emergency Department. Yesterday daylight.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Doctors are at work, nurses are there. Cab driver has
- 0:26Speaker 1: a minor accident with gang members in the hospital car park.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Gang members attack the cabby. Another cabby comes to his rescue.
- 0:34Speaker 1: He gets beaten up, taken into one of the cabbies,
- 0:37Speaker 1: gets taken into the ed and hidden because the gang
- 0:40Speaker 1: members were threatening to kill him. Cops arrived, two cops
- 0:44Speaker 1: starting out, They get beaten up, the cop car gets attacked.
- 0:49Speaker 1: This is daylight on a Wednesday in Palmeston North, while
- 0:52Speaker 1: people are trying to get healthcare. Six police cars end
- 0:55Speaker 1: up having to come. They peper spray and they taser
- 0:58Speaker 1: and finally the situation under control. I mean, this makes me,
- 1:02Speaker 1: This infuriates me, makes me so angry hearing about this.
- 1:06Speaker 1: But what's going to fix it? A labor government, a
- 1:09Speaker 1: national government, I don't think so. You know wrap around services. No,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I don't believe it harsher sentences. I don't think in
- 1:15Speaker 1: situations like this, they're listening to our politicians. I mean,
- 1:20Speaker 1: what do you do? What do you do? Take your
- 1:23Speaker 1: own taser to the hospital probably the most reasonable response,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I think. I mean, that's what sort of them out yesterday,
- 1:32Speaker 1: isn't it get your tasers out? For more from Early
- 1:37Speaker 1: Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news Talks. It'd
