Transcript
- 0:15Hello, and welcome everybody to episode forty seven of Cards and Categories. I
- 0:20am Mike Coolard from Rasball, joined tier as always by my very good friend
- 0:24Jeremy Burr, also from Rasball. How are you doing tonight, buddy,
- 0:28I'm doing just fine. I'm looking forward the episode tonight. I know we're
- 0:31gonna talk a little bit more cards and fantasy for a change, So I'm
- 0:35excited, especially because I was trying to go to card sho this weekend and
- 0:38I failed, and so I need to fix and so here we are.
- 0:42We're this is more personal than anything. Yeah, exactly. Speaking of personal,
- 0:49we are doing our personal collection, our PC for the month of May,
- 0:53the Players of the Month. We're keeping it going. We've really enjoyed
- 0:57this segment that I think it a good chance for us to also recap what
- 1:03has happened the previous month before, and I think especially as we get deeper
- 1:07and deeper into the season. In the Fantasy realm, all the stats blur
- 1:11together because you see the year to date line and don't really always realize the
- 1:15peaks and valleys of a season. But this will be fun. So this
- 1:18week we are obviously doing the May Player of the month PC because it's our
- 1:23first recording here in June. We're recording this on Tuesday the fourth, and
- 1:29you ready to get into the news and notes, ready to dive in,
- 1:32Let's go there. Hopefully nobody got hurt this week. Okay, yeah,
- 1:34we do have some injuries. Although I will post to this. I think
- 1:40another piece that I really like reading at the end of every month is from
- 1:45Baseball Perspectus. Rob Mainz does like a monthly recap, and he actually brought
- 1:51up that May was one of the lowest injury months that we've had in quite
- 1:56a few years, so it really did dip off. That we comment on
- 2:00it last week that the injuries seemed to tail off, and I think they
- 2:02actually did, and they picked up a little bit this week, but nothing
- 2:07I think, two earth shattering in our player pools for those fantasy teams.
- 2:12So the first one, I really, I really think it's because everybody was
- 2:15already hurt. I honestly, going back to his April Rob Mains' April stuff
- 2:21too, it wasn't terrible in April either, that's just kind of a normal
- 2:23April. I think what it is is we're all so connected nowadays that,
- 2:29like you know, all of these injuries immediately, and you just can feel
- 2:32the deluge of it, you know, yeah, you can feel it.
- 2:36And it's also it's we all know in the earth the first few months,
- 2:38everybody's told getting back not fully into it, like that's when people get hurt.
- 2:44And so when when you get in the warmer weather, things are,
- 2:46you know, people are coming back from those spring training injuries, it just
- 2:50feels different, even though it's really probably not not any different. So anyway,
- 2:53let's go, Okay, the first injury we've got is actually two San
- 2:58Diego Padres hitting the injured list. We've got both you Darvish and Joe Musgrove
- 3:04being placed on the IL with a strain groin for you Darvish and that baky
- 3:09elbow for Joe Musgrove. So I think this is now his third or fourth
- 3:14time on the IL for this elbow in the past year. I know that
- 3:19it blew up on it, like literally blew up with like fluid after they
- 3:22came back from that Mexico series last year, and it seems to really still
- 3:25be an issue for Joe Musgrove there. And to replace them in the rotation,
- 3:30the Padres are continuing to roll with Randy Vasquez, and I have called
- 3:35up Adam Maser to make his major league debut tonight as we speak, so
- 3:38we'll probably have more on him as we see what Maser offers us in the
- 3:44majors. But Brew, I'm focused more here on Darvish and Musgrove here because
- 3:52in some of the shower leagues that I'm playing in, like you know,
- 3:54the RcLs, the rasball commenter leagues, that is certainly territory where you Darvish
- 4:00and Joe Musgrove can be cut because there's really no bench or iye able to
- 4:05speak of. But I mean, are you entertaining cutting them and maybe some
- 4:10standard ten and twelve team leagues right now, because this is both of their
- 4:15second trips to the IYOL this season in twenty twenty four. Yeah, I
- 4:18think you know, of both of them, I'm probably more likely to move
- 4:21on from Musgrove at this point. You know, it's not just the injuries
- 4:26to your point, is it's multiple and performance, which to me, they're
- 4:30probably clearly connected there. And even if he comes back, I don't know
- 4:33if I'm playing him right away because I just don't know if I can trust
- 4:36it. It's kind of like his good buddy Blake Snell, that he's hurt
- 4:42and playing terrible, So what are you investing in? Darvish, on the
- 4:46other hand, is one that I'm a little bit more willing to kind of
- 4:48see how things play, you know, and with it being a hamstring issue,
- 4:56they called him day to day, you know, hopefully he's back shortly.
- 5:00I'm a little bit more willing to give Darvish so some rope here.
- 5:03He's looked quite a at better than musk Grove has, though you know,
- 5:09it's thirty seven year old Darvish. There's only only so much more where you
- 5:14can do on the seventeen pitches that he throws. So I think it's gonna
- 5:18be a hold for me on Darvish, definitely in twelve teams, ten teams.
- 5:23If I need the spot, I'm willing to move on Musgrove even a
- 5:27ten team, I'm cutting bait this point. I'm probably only holding him in
- 5:31a pretty deep dynasty situation at this point, just to see if he gets
- 5:35healthy and maybe comes back next year. Yeah, I think that makes sense
- 5:41because, yeah, that elbow has been extremely bocky there for Musgrove, and
- 5:46you were speaking of his buddy Blake Snell. He also hit the eel with
- 5:49a groin injury. It looks a little bit of like the recurrence of what
- 5:54he had before before it was a hip and maybe it's rotated a little bit
- 5:58down into the groin, but either way, still was not looking sharp in
- 6:01his outings in his return from the ile. Blake Snell not gonna take home
- 6:08another NLSI Young Award this year. I don't think at all that. I
- 6:14don't even think that. Last time he was on the injured list, we
- 6:16discussed whether or not we would cut him, but the skills were still there
- 6:19in terms of like the arsenal, the pitch, the stuff plus pitches were
- 6:25there, the velocity was there. He kind of looked like regular old Blake
- 6:30Snell. But now that he's been injured twice, are you in the same
- 6:33boat with Darbish and Muscrove here in tens and twelves where you might be moving
- 6:38on from Blake Snell? Yeah, I he's his name, I think I
- 6:41am Yeah, No, I think think if you loose to Snell last year,
- 6:44it felt like the entire year, even though he was winning the cy
- 6:46Young, that the wheels were just waiting to fall off and now it's the
- 6:50opposite side where it's just like things look so much better than his performance.
- 6:54But when you have an ERA round ten, you would expect that the metrics
- 6:59are going to say that they're a little better if you're a major league pitcher.
- 7:00And I think it's one of those at this point, like you can't
- 7:03you can't trust him to start, and how many good starts is going to
- 7:08take to trust him? And I think that's the issue. He's got to
- 7:11get back healthy, got a show he's healthy, and you probably need like
- 7:15three four good, like reasonable starts from him and then go into a good
- 7:19matchup before you actually feel comfortable starting him. So like, let's just assume
- 7:24that he's back and they're gonna like give him time this time around just to
- 7:28make sure he's healthy. So let's just say he's back at the end of
- 7:30June. You spend all of July just waiting, especially with All Star break,
- 7:35to make sure that he's doing what you want him to do. So
- 7:39you finally decided August to roll with the guy that's like best case scenario.
- 7:45And so yeah, and in ten twelve teamers, I'm cutting Blake Snell.
- 7:48I have no problem with it. I'm even in those kind of dynasty spots
- 7:53right now, I'm I'm a little iffy. I'm you know, I'd like
- 7:57to roll with him and see see what plays out. But if if you've
- 8:00got a higher keeper value on him, time to eleven go, you know,
- 8:03maybe somebody else will pick him up and get to go on the roller
- 8:07coaster instead. But yeah, Snell is somebody that I'm also moving on from.
- 8:11At this point, You've got you gotta be aggressive, and you can't
- 8:13at this point in the season. You can't be waiting around for guys like
- 8:16Snell to get back when there's other guys coming up, like Sureser, He's
- 8:20he's finally gonna get back on his rehab assignment. You know, maybe there's
- 8:24somebody else out there that you could be throwing that bench or I l spot
- 8:26at it. It's I'm not there for Snell. Yeah, and I even
- 8:31think in dynasty situations it might be a tough keep. I think he's going
- 8:37to be turning thirty two in December. He has a thousand innings on that
- 8:41arm now in the major leagues, So the MILA is really starting to crack
- 8:46up on Blake Snell. You do wonder kind of what the back end of
- 8:50that career is going to look like, as he just not only are those
- 8:54a thousand innings there, but they're a hard one thousand innings because he's thrown
- 9:00so many pitches to be able to maintain his approach where he's throwing it out
- 9:05the strike zone so much. Yeah, and I think you have to recognize
- 9:07with a guy like Snell. And I had a similar conversation with some readers
- 9:11on Rasball this weekend about Ellie de la Cruz, Like, you have to
- 9:16recognize streaky players are streaky players. So if you're going to own them,
- 9:18if you're going to lean into them, you have to lean into them.
- 9:22You have to expect the ups and the downs. And that's where you know,
- 9:26I had the conversation about Ellie and folks be like, oh, he's
- 9:30the worst player in the world. He's been off this month, Like yeah,
- 9:31but he could win the MVP just in July alone, and so like
- 9:37you have to know that that's what you're buying, and you just set it,
- 9:39forget it and look at the end of the year and go, yep,
- 9:41good, that's who Snell is too. And if you're not willing to
- 9:46just weather that entire storm and hook your season to it. Don't own the
- 9:50guy, don't go after it. It's not worth it. So yeah,
- 9:54I think that he's he's to your point on the later end of his career,
- 9:58and unfortunately we might just have more downs and ups at this point in
- 10:01time. Yeah, as somebody who I can't honestly remember the last time I've
- 10:07had Blake Snell in a fantasy season, partly because of what you're saying,
- 10:11is that that is not the way I approach pitching, where you like,
- 10:13set it and forget it and just kind of let the player ride that.
- 10:18I love tweaking and tooling all the matchups and looking at the weather and where
- 10:22the wind is blowing each day and things like that, And that is not
- 10:26somebody that Blake Snell can really be, because you could play that game and
- 10:31he'll look like he has the perfect matchup, blow up, give seven,
- 10:35give up seven runs, then walk into New York and you know, throw
- 10:41a complete game shot out or something. So uh, yeah, I guess
- 10:46keep that in mind as you're listening to these two Blake Snell haters discussing his
- 10:50outlook overall. Okay, the next injury we have is actually in New York.
- 10:58With Clark Schmidt going down with a strained lat it should keep him out
- 11:01four to six weeks, which I was bummed because I've been on Clerkschmidt for
- 11:05a while and I've been waiting for a year like this year where he was
- 11:09breaking out with a two fifty two ear ra over sixty and two thirds innings
- 11:15came with over a strikeout an inning, that he had increased his k rate.
- 11:20He was, you know, getting pretty lucky in terms of a two
- 11:22ninety one babe and an eighty four percent left on page percentage with a low
- 11:28ground ball rate. So maybe the correction is still kind of coming for Clerkschmid
- 11:33as we get into the warmer months here in the Bronx. But with this
- 11:37injury it should keep Louise Heel, who we will discuss more on the Player
- 11:43of the Month PC section in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Garrett Cole
- 11:48is on his way back, is making his first rehab start at some point
- 11:50this week and that should probably put him within I don't know how long you'll
- 11:56take Cole to ramp up, because you got to think he's in pretty decent
- 11:58shit he's been thrown for a while, but maybe a couple more weeks on
- 12:03coal, And so I mean, that's great if you're a Luise Heel owner
- 12:07out there, because you were wondering what's gonna happen to him. It did
- 12:11look like he was gonna end up back in the bullpen, or maybe they
- 12:15would keep him stretched out in triple A. But what do you make of
- 12:18this for the whole kind of Yankees rotation overall, and especially like, yeah,
- 12:24Louise Heel has been absolutely electric for a month. As we're going to
- 12:28be discussing here pretty soon, that is this maybe a buying opportunity on Luise
- 12:33Heel out there? Yeah, that's hard to say if it's a buying opportunity
- 12:37because he's looked so good that anybody that owns him is not willing to let
- 12:41him go for cheap. But at the same time, if you want to
- 12:43acquire him, there's enough question marks so that you don't want to pay full
- 12:46price, and so buy an opportunity if somebody's selling, But I doubt you
- 12:52have the seller that matches up without buyer. I think that the piece that
- 12:56is more interesting is to your point, was Garrett Cole who actually did about
- 12:58an hour ago, uh complete his first rehab stints there with with in double
- 13:05A, he made a whole third, three and a third innings, struck
- 13:09out five guys, give two hits and that's it. And so it looked
- 13:13like Garrett Cole And so I think, if anything, this just maybe moves
- 13:18him back a little bit faster, seeing that he does look pretty pretty good
- 13:20in that those rehab starts. Because I think the Yankees are gonna want to
- 13:24get get their ace back. It is unfortunate for Clark Schmidt. I think
- 13:28to your point, he was over achieving. He's I don't want to call
- 13:33him an innings eater because guy can barely make out of the sixth inning,
- 13:37but he he is kind of that very mid rotation starter. Uh. At
- 13:43the end of the day, he's he's not going to be amazing. He's
- 13:46going to be a four e ra A guy. He's going to get you
- 13:48a strikeout an inning and hopefully he doesn't blow up anywhere. And I think
- 13:50that's who clerkshpit is nothing wrong with that, but I think he was playing
- 13:56a little over his head so far this season, and so the Yankees it's
- 14:00gotta be thrilled that Garrett Cole is gonna be back because I didn't get the
- 14:03warm and Fuzzy's reading the injury reports there on on Schmidt. The four to
- 14:07six shutdown is always worse than a four to six. I l stint the
- 14:13four to six means we're shutting you down. We'll let you know of just
- 14:16six whether we're gonna we're gonna ramp the things back up. Yeah, exactly,
- 14:20And with the way Luis Heel is pitching, there's no need to rush
- 14:26Clark Schmidt back, And especially given where the Yankees are sitting right now,
- 14:28they look pretty unstoppable in terms of rolling their way to a division titles.
- 14:35So it is possible maybe they slow cook Clark Schmidt on his return back from
- 14:39that injury and maybe even move him to a bullpen role if they need to
- 14:45really slow play that lat injury over the rest of the summer. Yeah,
- 14:48I think that's actually a very likely outcome as he comes back in long relief
- 14:52and opener status things like that, and just stretches out well and adds to
- 14:58that the capacity to keep that bullpen rush. So I think that's a really
- 15:00really good call. Yeah, And yeah, with Garrett Cole. That is
- 15:05really crazy. I can't believe that he's actually not getting Tommy John. And
- 15:09it does remind me a little bit of like where we were sitting early in
- 15:13draft season with Kyle Bradish. As you know, he came out with the
- 15:16sprained elbow and looked again also destined for Tommy John, but has looked really
- 15:22good in his return. His Orioles teammates, unfortunately, will not be avoiding
- 15:28that fate, as both John Means and Tyler Wells are undergoing UCL procedures.
- 15:33And I just kind of wanted to call this out because like it was crazy
- 15:37what John Means was doing before he went down with that injury, but it
- 15:41did seem like he pushed that ligament a little bit too far again and blew
- 15:46out. So that'll be his second UCL repair. I think just the way
- 15:50that the Orioles have also phrased these injuries that it does sound like Means is
- 15:56going to go undergo some sort of bracesert surgery and I'm not sure what's going
- 16:00to happen with Tyler Wells, but anything maybe to add in here that any
- 16:06sort of like maybe cheap buying opportunity in some sort of super deep format or
- 16:14moving on from both these guys in every single format. Yeah, for me,
- 16:18I'm moving on from both these guys. There's nothing exciting enough in the
- 16:21profile that when you end up with the UCL, especially at this point in
- 16:25the season, that's the hard part. If it's you know, the symptoncer
- 16:29strider right right at the beginning, Shane Bieber, like, you know,
- 16:33there's a chance that they're going to come back and miss a month or two
- 16:37next season and then work back how I'll walk or Bueler right, Whereas at
- 16:42this point in the season you're talking, you're out a full year plus you're
- 16:47ramping back up to hopefully come back in like late August, and so the
- 16:52team's not going to want to force that through and get a guy coming back.
- 16:56So there you're essentially out almost two years at this point, rest of
- 17:00this year and all next year. So then you have rust like, that's
- 17:03too long for me to wait on guys that are in that kind of middle
- 17:07layer of starting pitcher because you just don't know what you're getting when you come
- 17:10back, and what you give up an opportunity costs from that roster spot is
- 17:15just not worth it. So both these guys I'm I'm moving on from you
- 17:18know, I'm maybe slightly intrigue here from a I'm gonna call it a volume
- 17:25perspective with like a Cole Irvin or something like that. If I want to
- 17:29squint a little bit and say, hey, where do I pick something up
- 17:30short term? Maybe in a two start week, not a strikeout guy by
- 17:34any means, and probably performing over his head a little bit as well.
- 17:37But I do think any picture for the Oriols right now is interesting now based
- 17:41on that offense, and so I would give him a look, But neither
- 17:45guy I'm holding on to, and nobody that's really jumping that rotation right now
- 17:52that I'm terribly excited about now. Trade perspective though, that's where it's interesting
- 17:56for Baltimore is who are they going to try to bring in? And I
- 18:00know one of your hometown boys there, Garrett Corchetes, been starting to make
- 18:03us his round and nocks with San Diego, which I mean that's just a
- 18:08j preller, like who do I feel like talking about today? You know,
- 18:14but hey, maybe if Crochetes on the trade block, there's probably not
- 18:17a better connection there than Baltimore with some young hitters for a young starter.
- 18:22There might not be a better match out there in the ball game today.
- 18:26Yeah, I mean, honestly, it wouldn't also be maybe surprising if the
- 18:30Orioles pursue blakexl from the Giants to like bring him over and saying, hey,
- 18:37like Blake, we're gonna make sure that we let you walk after season
- 18:41or whatever and make that happen. But yeah, it's going to be interesting
- 18:45because there is a lot of pitching out there, especially in the NL.
- 18:48The NL, there's a lot of real rough teams in the National League,
- 18:52and so it's going to be I think fascinating to see maybe how quickly that
- 18:57hot stove heats up as team see the chum in the water and start,
- 19:03you know, really surrounding it like a bunch of sharks. So with our
- 19:07last piece of injury news, we're gonna stick in the Al East, and
- 19:10that is Jordan Romano, the Toronto Blue Jays closer, going down with elbow
- 19:14inflammation once again. And this looks like it's just gonna be another kind of
- 19:18rough season for Jordan Romano in terms of injuries. Again, it's not his
- 19:25first time on the injured list this season, and I also just wanted to
- 19:29bring this up because if Yimi Garcia is out there in your leagues at all,
- 19:34I think, as long as he's sitting in that closers role for Toronto,
- 19:38Garcia is like a top five or six closer. I think that his
- 19:44peripherals have been absolutely absurd this year. He's posted a one to fifty seven
- 19:48ERA and twenty three innings that's come with an eleven point four K nine.
- 19:55But the nastiest part of this all is on the stuff plus rating. The
- 19:59stuff plus rating on slider is a one ninety four where one hundred is average,
- 20:03and he throws it twenty ish percent of the time. It's an absolutely
- 20:07filthy pitch and he's throwing a really hard fastball off of it too that has
- 20:12just a really great shape. He's really rounded into a premier pitcher. And
- 20:18I mean, if Toronto keeps going south, this is going to be one
- 20:22of the top gets I think for a bullpen arm in the league at the
- 20:26deadline, if Toronto even really wants to move on from him, because he's
- 20:30been such a valuable piece for him over the past two years. Garcia out
- 20:34there in Toronto, I absolutely love that. Like I think he's also a
- 20:40great person, maybe to go out and try and buy if you can see,
- 20:45like there any daylight there where you know somebody is trying to sell a
- 20:49little bit higher on Garcia and maybe you see that like this Romana injury might
- 20:56yield an entire rest of the season from the closer spot with Garcia. But
- 21:00yeah, I brew do you love Emy Garcia as much as I do?
- 21:04And what do we think about Joerner Remino's kind of like longish term like arc
- 21:11with the Blue Jays kind of going forward now that things have really gone awry
- 21:15in terms of injuries for him the past couple of years. Yeah, I
- 21:19do like Garcia. I like his profile. I like a lot of what
- 21:22he brings, you know, very consistent, very very stable arm. To
- 21:30me, he's I don't know if i'd call him a top five seven.
- 21:33I can't what term you use there, especially pitching there in Toronto with how
- 21:38that team's looked. I think the other thing is with Romano, it's it's
- 21:42not like anything is structurally wrong. He just looks off ya and doesn't feel
- 21:49great, which is almost the worst scenario here for Emmy Garcia is because Rono
- 21:56is like gonna reset on the injured list and then come back and going to
- 22:00work him back into the role. Then Garcia's value drops and then he gets
- 22:03hurt again. Like I feel like we could be on a roller coaster with
- 22:06Garcia at this point. So it doesn't mean you don't pick him up,
- 22:08because I think you do. I think you just have to recognize that.
- 22:11I don't know where we're going to go from here, because Romano is the
- 22:15guy. If healthy there, I don't think there's any question he's earned that
- 22:18role. He deserves that role. It's just things look off. But the
- 22:23number the numbers have been okay, from an actual results perspective, they've not
- 22:27been fantastic, and the peripherals have been pretty poor actually, But yeah,
- 22:33if there's nothing structurally wrong, they're going to work him back in once he's
- 22:37ready. Okay, all right, then let's move in to some just other
- 22:41transactions in terms of demotions. Promotions, we discussed a little bit last week
- 22:48that as we get deeper and deeper into June, it really becomes kind of
- 22:52prospects season as these guys are demoted, promoted kind of shuffled around, and
- 22:57one of the big ones that we are getting this week is Connor Norby is
- 23:00coming up for the Baltimore Orioles. He is one of their top prospects as
- 23:06a infielder. He should be playing second base here, taking over for Jorge
- 23:11Mateo, who is hitting the concussion injured list with uh. It's actually really
- 23:17strange injury in terms of he was on deck waiting to start, you know,
- 23:23taking practice swings and Cedric Mullens bunked him on the head with this helmet
- 23:27while in the on deck circle. So little oriol On Oriel crime there that
- 23:32will send Horaye Mateo to the concussion list. I think that as long as
- 23:37Mateo is out is how big of a window Norbery is going to get.
- 23:41And I think out of all the Orioles prospects I've this has been the one
- 23:48that I haven't quite been on as much as Connor Norby as especially this year,
- 23:52things have been a little tougher under the hood as he his overall k
- 23:56percentage has increased a triple a to thirty point seven percent. He has posted
- 24:03some pretty good numbers in terms of the power and being able to produce a
- 24:07one to twenty seven WRC plus there as a twenty four year old. But
- 24:12brew do you think that there's any chance that Karen Orby makes some noise in
- 24:17this week up with Baltimore and finds his way onto the roster. Is there
- 24:21a chance? Yes, The question, to your point is how long is
- 24:26Mateo out? And first of all, first thing, Cedric Molds is hitting
- 24:29solid for a while. But right, but I think it is a question
- 24:36of how long's Mateo out? And Canorby could get out hot because the Orioles
- 24:41have now called up a handful of guys and not really giving them a chance,
- 24:45and so it's like there's they know that they're gonna start their clocks.
- 24:48They need to get some exposure. Maybe they're trying to show that they're ready
- 24:51for the majors. They can claim that they're a young major league ready talent
- 24:55for trade season. I don't know, but I I mean Norby there's to
- 24:59me, there's there's lot to like. He's for the last three years,
- 25:03he's been basically a two to ninety hitter with you know, call it twenty
- 25:07to twenty five home run power, ten steals, Like, there's nothing terribly
- 25:14concerning with his game. Strikeouts were up a little bit this year and in
- 25:18triple A, so I actually kind of like the guy. I don't think
- 25:22you're looking here at like a All Star by any means. I think you're
- 25:26looking at a really, really solid contributor. And so I could squint and
- 25:30say, hey, back in starter for second base as he gets under his
- 25:33belt. Definitely a great middle endfield option. And so I like what Norby
- 25:38has. I just don't think I can put a ton of stock into the
- 25:41Orioles and the young guys that are trying to establish themselves the rest of this
- 25:45year because they just have too many that play the same positions and they'd rather
- 25:48play Orgeman tayl So's. That's the challenge. Yeah, I agree that it's
- 25:56just like it is a mess to try to sort out, and like trying
- 25:59to hold any of those fringe prospects, even if they have the skills,
- 26:03it just makes it really tough to find a set role for them on the
- 26:07major league team unless they are just another worldly talent like Gunner or Adley or
- 26:12Jackson Holliday. So it'll be interesting, I think, to see what happens
- 26:18with Norby here, and maybe he'll end up going a little bit more of
- 26:21like the Joey Ortiz route where they bring him up here and there to give
- 26:25him a couple of shows and then trade them at the deadline. Yeah,
- 26:29I think you're you're onto something there. Yeah, Okay. The other big
- 26:33promotion demotion that we had was I was actually kind of waiting for this shoe
- 26:38to drop. I was not surprised when he was demoted yesterday. And that
- 26:42is Spencer Torkelsen from the Detroit Tigers has been sent down to Triple A to
- 26:48just work on hitting. It's been rough for Torkalsen that the month of May
- 26:56was especially brutal to him, as he ended up hosting a one ninety one
- 27:02average over twenty five games. He just slipped all the way down the batting
- 27:07order in terms of hitting like second, third, fourth, and was hitting
- 27:10eighth, seventh towards the end of the month, and it was clear that
- 27:15Detroit was ready to shuttle him out as they were kind of moving him lower
- 27:19and lower in the lineup and even you know below guys like a Kiel Badou
- 27:23and Matt Vierling and just trying to catch any lightning in a bottle. The
- 27:27lightning in a bottle they're going to try to catch out of Triple A is
- 27:32with Justin Henry Aloy I texted you when he got called up that I was
- 27:37this close. I was so close to including him in our prospect like stashul
- 27:41prospects discussion last week when we went through guys that we thought could be getting
- 27:45called up soon, and this was pretty much the exact move that I was
- 27:49envisioning that Spencer go down work on trying to make some contact. We're going
- 27:55to bring up justin Henry mLOY to see what he can do for us to
- 27:57see. Honestly, this is a pretty big situation for mLOY going forward,
- 28:03because this is a make or break moment I think for him to show Detroit
- 28:07whether or not he can truly stick at a corner infield position and hit enough
- 28:12to justify sticking around the organization, or if he just becomes a bench bat
- 28:18or is shipped out of town, you know. And so with that,
- 28:22I mean, I think right now Malloy's maybe like a fifteen teamer ale only
- 28:27probably pick up just because I'm just not sure how he's going to do in
- 28:32the first go around in the league, but I'm excited to see what he
- 28:34can do. Brew Are you using this to kind of change any of your
- 28:41long term projections or views? On Maloy and what are you doing with Spencer
- 28:47Torkelsen in all sorts of league depths across the board. Yeah, so I
- 28:52think starting with Maloy, I haven't definitely not watch Katie or I think you're
- 28:56right, maybe fifteen teamer definitely an ale only leagues is where I'd be making
- 29:00a look at play there. But you know, as I look at Maloy,
- 29:03you know, it's not hard to squint, squint look at those projections
- 29:07and feel like, yeah, they're about right where you know, he's being
- 29:10projected for like a two thirty average kind of middling power, and we'll see
- 29:14what what else happens, like maybe not too thirty average, But you know,
- 29:18I don't have significant hopes here. I just don't know that he has
- 29:21enough power to kind of stick it one of the quarter outfield positions. And
- 29:25so I do think he finds his way long term into kind of that fourth
- 29:27outfielder type type role or you know, shuttling in at first DH things like
- 29:34that. It for for the forks on the other side, that that's that's
- 29:38hard. He looked so good at the end of the last season. He
- 29:41had so much prost and promise. He thought he finally works through it.
- 29:45So now that he's just been absolutely dreadful, you know, I I'd be
- 29:49willing to take a flyer on him in the dynasty type league, and you
- 29:52know, depending on the price, I'd be willing. I think there's enough
- 29:55talent there that's some guys that just need a reset and come back and they're
- 30:00better than never do I think that's likely outcome, No, but I'm willing
- 30:03to take that gamble if the price is right. I think that's maybe the
- 30:07twenty percent outcome is that he comes back and you know, figures it all
- 30:11out and comes back to where we were hoping he went this year versus he
- 30:15ends up being kind of a bench bat as well. But I think the
- 30:18Tigers are also telling you that they still think there's something there, because if
- 30:22they thought he was a bench bat, he'd still be with the major league
- 30:25team. He wouldn't be down in tripa A trying to get some seasoning all
- 30:30at Jordan Walker right with the Cardinals, like the when when you send the
- 30:34guy down that was a starter, it's because you believe he can come back
- 30:37as a starter. You don't send them down to get a little season to
- 30:41be called back up to be a bench bat. So I got a little
- 30:45little more hope with with Thorkelsen, but with bated breath for sure. Yeah.
- 30:48Absolutely, And if you want to talk about sending people down for knowing
- 30:55that he want them to be starters long term, We've got another just real
- 31:00strange situation in terms of watching his entire arsenal fall apart. That is,
- 31:04Redebt Meers from the Los Angeles Angels has been optioned after just an ugly stretch
- 31:11of outings. As a Redetmers lover and owner of him for a long time
- 31:17in our autunew league, I actually I was looking it up. I had
- 31:19owned him since like mid twenty twenty one, and it was really rough trying
- 31:26to pull him through this latest stretch that saw his earray balloon to six fourteen
- 31:32on the season, and just the stretch of games was awful, Like after
- 31:38he came out of the gate hot for his first four starts, his first
- 31:41four starts hit a one nineteen ear array, struck out eleven point nine K
- 31:48nine, and then after that first start against Baltimore on four twenty two,
- 31:55and no, the new fangrab is just oh, it's not let me look
- 32:02at stuff now, because it's been going through like upside or updates and as
- 32:07they've moved to like different player cards and stuff. But I can tell you
- 32:10the last month and a half of redet Mers has been straight poo poop,
- 32:15and it's been awful that like just getting absolutely shelled. He's leaving fastballs over
- 32:22the heart of the plate. Just nothing seems to be working for him,
- 32:27and you do have to wonder if there is just a malaise of like,
- 32:30man, I'm on the Los Angeles Angels and I'm stuck here might be hitting
- 32:35Redebtmors a little bit. But certainly it's also been strange because the tools are
- 32:39still there in terms of the velo, the stuff, plus ratings on his
- 32:45arsenal from the fastball and the slider, things have been pretty consistent. It's
- 32:50he's always kind of struggled here and there with his control. And yeah,
- 32:54I do think that he's cuttable in any leagues that you're holding him, except
- 33:00for like true dynasties out of new The nice thing is you get the salary
- 33:04back and there's only like the forty man rosters, So with that consideration he
- 33:08became a little bit more cuttable there. But in Dynasty leagues. Are you
- 33:15still maybe like going to keep tabs and read detmers and see where he's going,
- 33:19or are you like me and maybe just angrily cutting bait wherever you can.
- 33:23Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, I'm probably
- 33:25just cutting bait. I've never been really big into two Deptbers, just because
- 33:29the walk issues that he has, Like it seems like he's always teetering,
- 33:32and he's a blow up kind of guy. Blow up look great, blow
- 33:35up look great, and to your point, unless you're really riding the waves,
- 33:38he's he's dangerous. So I think that that's a that's definitely a struggle.
- 33:44The interesting thing with him is he actually look at like the underlying peripherals,
- 33:46look at his ex FIP, his XCRA. This is the best season
- 33:49he's had. I know, he's actually better than than he has been.
- 33:52I got to fanying resh page. I made a detour to Raphael Devers because
- 33:55I can't type. But like he's looked, looked good. Velocity's the best
- 34:00that's been his career. Like, I think it's one of those guys that
- 34:02absolutely needs a reset. You're right, just playing for the angels, maybe
- 34:07just too long. So I think there's probably this is a great opportunity.
- 34:09He's probably gonna gt fliped somewhere, get a chance, I'll say reclamation team.
- 34:15I mean the Angels probably are a reclamation team, but it would be
- 34:17interesting to kind of see where where that all works out. Yeah, I
- 34:22totally agree. The next transaction that we have for this evening is Royce Lewis
- 34:27is returning from the IL, which meant that Edward Julian is the one optioned
- 34:32in Minnesota as it kind of mostly became the default move to put Julian down,
- 34:39as he's been all right and certainly has provided some power for us in
- 34:45our fantasy game, but the strikeouts have been pretty tremendous and are a part
- 34:50of Julian's game, as well as the batting average being a little bit low.
- 34:53But I think this was mostly because Julian had options left and Minnesota couldn't
- 34:59do anything with Kevin Newman and Manny Margo but wanted to keep Willi Castro around
- 35:07and so for Royce Lewis. Of course, now that he returned, he
- 35:10blasted a homer tonight as we're talking here. On Tuesday night, Conna Norby
- 35:15also homered for his first career hit. So it's been a night of these
- 35:21players kind of following us as we discuss them. And I think, obviously,
- 35:25if you've been holding Lewis for this long, he's an immediate must start
- 35:30and move into your lineups. And what are you doing maybe with Julian in
- 35:35leagues like twelve and fifteen teamers where you actually might have a bench spot for
- 35:43him. And I've always liked the talent and Julian, I think I might
- 35:46hold him, But Brew, what are you doing? Yeah, I think
- 35:49it's it's fair to try to hold him just to see how things shake out.
- 35:52Because You're right, Lewis is the spot he's got. I mean,
- 35:54guys hitting a thousand three play appearances, I believe, and I think he
- 36:00has two homers in those as well, so he's doing just fan just fine.
- 36:04Yeah, he was two for two to start the season before he got
- 36:07hurt with one. Yeah, well he had the double two Oh okay,
- 36:10well sorry double. But the issue with Juliam here is is he going to
- 36:19cut down on the strikeouts? Like because he's casting here a second coming type
- 36:22thing here that he's got these great tools. I guess he can run a
- 36:25little bit more than Europe did. But if he's still going to strike out
- 36:29at thirty four percent of the time, which is top six and the majors
- 36:31for qualified hitters this season, that that's not going to play long term.
- 36:36So I think that's part of it. Is not that you know he was
- 36:38good, but when you're hitting two O seven and you are striking out well
- 36:45over third of the time, yeah, you've got to get that, get
- 36:46that sorted out. But I think he does have the talent to do it.
- 36:50So I think it's probably the best case scenario move for the for the
- 36:53twins, and you know, I think give it a month or two,
- 36:57especially in dynasty formats. I'm willing to hold him. I'm not holding Ulians
- 37:00there anywhere from a redraft perspective. I'm cutting bait from a redraft perspective most
- 37:06likely. Okay, that is fair, all right, Well, we've got
- 37:09a lot of card discussion coming up here after the break, but I will
- 37:15just place in everybody's head for next week, we will be discussing Tops Series
- 37:20two coming out as that is being released on June twelfth, so we will
- 37:24have a big overview of that coming next week. That's really the big one
- 37:28on the calendar. Donrius is also coming out next week. I don't think
- 37:31either of us are really much of donorous guys. That kind of ends up
- 37:36in some of my collection pieces nowadays as unlicensed you know, mostly you're buying
- 37:43lots and a bunch of those donorous cards are in there, but I use
- 37:45them as kind of filler, honestly that they are. They've gone downhill since
- 37:52if you've collected in the eighties and nineties and knew what donors used to be.
- 37:57So we will be focusing mostly on Top Series two next week for that
- 38:00checklist overview, but like I said, we've got a big overview of the
- 38:07Players of the Month PC coming up right after the break stick around all right,
- 38:27welcome back everybody, as we get into our Player of the Month PC
- 38:30discussion and as we did last month for the April Player of the Month PC's
- 38:38if you go to rasball dot com and look up the actual post that corresponds
- 38:44with this podcast, you will see there that we've included pictures of all of
- 38:49these cards there, so certainly check that out on rasball dot com and that
- 38:53way you won't have to kind of be punching every link in as you're listening
- 38:57to this on whatever podcast platform we were using that. I mean, as
- 39:02you're punching stuff in on that podcast platform, why not rate and review us
- 39:06while you can. We would have definitely appreciate that. But certainly the links
- 39:10are in the show details too, if you still want to do it the
- 39:15old school kind of first forty ish pods of our run throwback in terms of
- 39:23just punching in each little link off of your podcast notes. But yeah,
- 39:30check it out on RASBOLB where we've got the pictures. We're gonna dive right
- 39:32into it as we've got Aaron Judge winning the Player of the Month for the
- 39:38Batter in the Al and I think this was maybe the easiest choice of any
- 39:44of the awards that are issued on a monthly basis that he was absolutely on
- 39:51fire for the month of May. He hit three sixty one four seen.
- 39:54He had a nine to eighteen slug with twenty seven RBIs and twenty eight games
- 40:00to go with fourteen homers twelve doubles. And this looks like the Aaron Judge
- 40:06that put up the sixty two homers just a couple of years ago. He
- 40:08looks fully healthy. The Yankees are absolutely rolling in the al East right now.
- 40:14So if you drafted Aaron Judge, I mean you might end up with
- 40:17like a top two or three player in the Fantasy game this year if he
- 40:22kind of keeps anything close to this pace going forward. Because at this point
- 40:28that month was so huge. It's going to be a huge season for Aaron
- 40:30Judge. No matter what I see on our list this month, We're getting
- 40:36a little more obscure with some of these picks, as just like what we
- 40:39had for last month. Aaron Judge was included in our first Round Picks Selection
- 40:45PC back in the fall, and with that I took the chrome negative refractor
- 40:52of his rookie card, so that one's off the board. Although I guess
- 40:55we did pick the double up on the mookie bets, but I know that
- 41:00we didn't want to do the negative refractor again. So I'll let you go
- 41:04here first, Brew, what card are you putting in the PC for Aaron
- 41:07Judge in the month of May. Yeah, I'm going with a card that
- 41:10a type of card I've always wanted to own, and I think it works
- 41:14very well for Aaron Judge. And that is the game used Tier one bat
- 41:22Knob Relic one of one and I'm trying to see what year I'm looking at
- 41:27here. This is a twenty twenty three auto card. And if you've never
- 41:31seen these cards, it is exactly what it sounds like. It is literally
- 41:36the end of the bat knob from a game used bat that they have shaved
- 41:40off and put into the card, and so the circle of the bat knob
- 41:45is right in the middle of the card. It's got some nice wear on
- 41:47it. This one actually has a little bit of writing on it. That's
- 41:52probably It's hard to make out because it's a little beat up, but most
- 41:54likely his number or the link of the bat, one of the two of
- 41:59those. As I look at Aaron Judge cards, I have to say this
- 42:01for most Yankee cards, I tend to get disappointed by Yankee cards in general,
- 42:08just because of the team colors. You know, I love a good
- 42:13color match, and when you start looking at the Yankees color matching black,
- 42:16gray and pinstripe doesn't really play too terribly much for finding, you know,
- 42:23the really the slick card. And so when you look at Aaron Judge cards,
- 42:28you know, I had to go look at something very obscure. We
- 42:30are going a little in the higher end this time, this this card not
- 42:35too long ago sold on eBay for three thousand, six ninety five dollars.
- 42:38You got a discount there if you thought I was gonna go for four.
- 42:42And it is, like I said, it is just a fabulous card,
- 42:45the type that you know you'd love to look to own for any player.
- 42:51And oddly, I'd like to say it's actually a pretty good deal on this
- 42:54type of card, because some of those can go five, ten thousand,
- 42:59and matter of you know, if you get a chance to you know,
- 43:02I wonder what that would be if you threw up there today. This one
- 43:06ended in April, and so you know, Judge wasn't doing a whole lot
- 43:10of the time. Go that card up here. Now it might go for
- 43:13double, but it is a fantastic card, one that I would love to
- 43:16have in the collection. Never will somebody else owns that they're not given it
- 43:22back. Well, let's go into our virtual one of all of our monthly
- 43:24PCs. But I can also say that I think this one might have also
- 43:29gone a little bit cheaper on eBay, as Team Penske twenty one is not
- 43:32exactly the most recordable eBay seller on there, with a one hundred and two
- 43:38feedback points, which is really low in the baseball card game, only ninety
- 43:44seven point two percent positive, so that's not a great ratio. Whoever did
- 43:49buy that card from Team Penske twenty one might have been taking a little bit
- 43:52of a gamble on this big time one of one. I think this is
- 43:54also a great choice because if there's anything that the Yankees also just exude its
- 44:00kind of opulence, and Tier one's a great set for that with the gold
- 44:06leaf kind of surrounding the bat knob as well as there's a pretty good chance
- 44:09that that bat knob comes from a twenty twenty two bat. I don't know
- 44:15like how they source those bats for Tier one on these bat knob relics,
- 44:19but if that's the case, then that knob came from the historic sixty two
- 44:23homer season. Just another little kind of cherry on top of everything else with
- 44:29this great card. Yeah, that would be the thing is they actually had
- 44:31that one with the authentication sticker to see the game from that season. That
- 44:36would just add even more providence to the card. But now you just get
- 44:40to imagine it is and just tell everybody that it is and nobody else can
- 44:45prove you wrong. Okay, well, I'm going to pick the twenty twenty
- 44:49two Stadium Club number one sixty one chrome refractor for Aaron Judges to put in
- 44:54the PC. Now, this is very important that you get the chrome refractor
- 44:58from the normal Stadium Club upset because the image is very different from the normal
- 45:05Stadium Club set from twenty twenty two versus the Stadium Club Chrome. And so
- 45:09the Stadium Club Bass card had this wonderful picture of Aaron Judge in front of
- 45:15the corn during the Iowa game from twenty twenty one, and it's just a
- 45:21very I think it's an iconic photo in terms of it also harkens back to
- 45:24his twenty twenty two short print from that series from series one or whatever it
- 45:32was the Flagship Base Flagship ountat remember a series wan Er Series two, but
- 45:36the short print there is also another field of Dreams card. This one is
- 45:40more affordable, especially if you get just the Base Stadium Club. But I
- 45:45went with the Chrome here because as much as I love Stadium Club, all
- 45:50of the chrome cards from the twenty twenty two set are all misprinted. They
- 45:55all have this weird line on the back where it says the sign of all
- 46:00autograph cards is witnessed by a TOPS risk representative to guarantee authenticity, and that's
- 46:06only on auto cards. That nobody deleted that line from any of the chrome
- 46:12like bas refractors or chrome rainbow refractors from the twenty twenty two Stadium Club set,
- 46:17so it's not like a short print or anything in terms of that.
- 46:22But it's just really I think the jous position of having this wonderful, absolutely
- 46:28beautiful, well centered piece of art card with Aaron Judge in front of this
- 46:32cornfield on it, and then you flip it over and just see Tops this
- 46:37incompetence staring at you at the bottom of the card is just too perfect.
- 46:40I love it. I think it's a fantastic card. Like I said,
- 46:45the base version will only run you a couple bucks, So if you're looking
- 46:49for a cheap version of the PC cards that we're putting in, that would
- 46:53be the choice. If you're looking for the chrome or the chrome refractor,
- 46:58there aren't many out there because this is a pretty popular card with Yankees collectors,
- 47:01Aaron's Judge collectors that it will run you a pretty penny. One I
- 47:06linked to is one hundred bucks, but I think you could probably find a
- 47:08little better deal than that. Yeah, I think this is a great card.
- 47:13I did not realize that they had the signings burbage there on the back.
- 47:16That's a nice little easter egg to find. And I have to say,
- 47:20as a Midwest born and raised baseball player myself played in a few stadiums
- 47:25there with the horn as the backdrop, and it is kind of just a
- 47:30different feel if you're playing in the Midwest and you're surrounded by corn and when
- 47:35you hit the home run, it just never comes back. There's a whole
- 47:37different different ballgames. Just to see a major league player of the statue of
- 47:40Aaron Judge Blake like he's on a little league field is something to be said
- 47:45there for So I think this is a great pick, very iconic image to
- 47:47your point, and much more attainable card than where I went. Yeah,
- 47:55good black tracking down the one of one there. Okay, So from the
- 48:00NL side, the hitter of the month was Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 48:06Just had a monster month in terms of hitting for a nine to ninety
- 48:12ops. He also tied for the NL league in homers with seven RBIs.
- 48:17He put up twenty four So you can see already how crazy Aaron Judges month
- 48:23was compared to Bryce Harper that you know, had an output of homers that
- 48:28was almost twice as many and actually was twice as many right on the nose.
- 48:32And on top of that too, it's also weird that Judge only had
- 48:37twenty seven RBIs to site the fourteen homers, and that's because Juan Soto also
- 48:40had a crazy month of May and hit a bunch of homers wasn't on in
- 48:45front of Aaron Judge very often. So there are a lot of solo homers.
- 48:50But with Bryce Harper, we've got hundreds of thousands of different cards maybe
- 48:55to pick from. This is maybe one of the most printed guy like in
- 49:01the entire hobby between Obviously it's got to be like anybody from the nineties from
- 49:07like Ken Griffey Junior, Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas is up there. But
- 49:10in terms of like the modern era stuff, you've got to think Bryce Harper
- 49:14and Mike Trout probably have the most cards out there in terms of not only
- 49:19being in pretty much every flagship and update, but also any insert set that
- 49:24ever goes out includes Trout and Harper. So out of all the cards out
- 49:29there. Wy did you pick to put in the PC this month? Brouke,
- 49:31Yeah, so I think you make a good point. There's a few
- 49:35of them out there, and I went the option of the spectrum this time.
- 49:37I went with Bryce Harper's twenty twelve tops number six sixty one. That's
- 49:43his bas rookie card, but the screaming version as they reference it. He
- 49:49has a few what you'd call original rookie cards, which is an interesting dynamic
- 49:53in itself where it's hard to tell which one's really the true one. But
- 49:58it's a great picture of him. Looks you know, if you were to
- 50:00guess, it looks like he's just slid in the second base after hitting a
- 50:05double and he stood up and he is just screaming top of the lungs into
- 50:09the dugout, you know, clenched fist. He's so pumped at that moment.
- 50:15And the reason I picked this card not only is his rookie card,
- 50:19and that's you know, I love to have a rookie of all the stars,
- 50:22just to be able to have him in the collection. Look back one
- 50:23day and say, hey, I got his his rookie card. But it
- 50:27is the to me, is the epitome of Bryce Harper, like the fire
- 50:30that that guy has, what he brings to the game, and probably also
- 50:36the downfall of Bryce Harper is the fire he has that he brings to the
- 50:37game, right, And so I absolutely love this card. I think it's
- 50:42true to who he is and he isn't going to change and I'm and I'm
- 50:45thrilled with that. This is a card that's we're gonna call it twenty five
- 50:50bucks is the is the peak on this card From a kind of a raw
- 50:53perspective, if you're looking something grated, you're clearly gonna go U up quite
- 51:00quite a bit. On the PSA ten perspective, you're talking more of a
- 51:06eighty ninety dollars card here for Bryce Harper. But again basic simple love a
- 51:12little white border on the outside, nice little framing. Back when you know
- 51:15twenty twelve, when the designs were a little bit simpler but just cleaning classy.
- 51:22You gotta love twenty twelve designs as well, So pretty simple pick for
- 51:25me. I'm guessing that you went a little more creative than a rookie card,
- 51:30a base rookie card. Where did you go with with Bryce Harper?
- 51:34Yeah, I wanted to get something in a Phillies uniform and it's a bummer
- 51:37that. Actually his first Phillies flagship card in the twenty nineteen set is kind
- 51:43of boring that the twenty card is a little bit more iconic. He's also
- 51:46streaming in that, but has the helmet flying off with the fanatic little i'm
- 51:52not even what do you call it, like a bandana or whatever head wrap
- 51:57that he's got on. But I actually to go with a very recent card
- 52:00that's from the twenty twenty three tops Now set. This is number nine nine
- 52:06to two, the short print version, which was a rainbow foil number two
- 52:10one hundred short print that the card for the base tops Now version was to
- 52:16commemorate when Bryce Harper hit the two homers in that NLDS game against the Braves.
- 52:23But the short print rainbow foil version actually is centered up picture of Bryce
- 52:30Harper when he's staring down Orlando Arcia when he's rounding second base after hitting one
- 52:36of the homers that if you recall from that series, there's a lot of
- 52:39kind of bad blood between the Braves and the Phillies, as Orlando Arcia the
- 52:45game before or like one of the games before Bryce Harper made a mistake and
- 52:52when the Braves went into the locker room, Orlando Rcia was screaming at a
- 52:55boy. Bryce at a boy, and apparently that fired up the Phillies and
- 53:00got underneath Bryce's skin. That's where the staredown came from. So it's kind
- 53:05of an iconic piece of Philadelphia Phillies lore, and I think also just shows
- 53:09kind of like that connection between Philadelphia and Bryce Harper. Overall, this is
- 53:15gonna run you a pretty penny because of all of those factors that Bryce Harper
- 53:20is a pretty popular player out there, lots of PCs, but also the
- 53:23Phillies are a pretty popular team in terms of like the collecting world, there's
- 53:27lots of Phillies fans out there, and if you are a Phillies fan,
- 53:30this has got to be one of the target cards for your collection overall.
- 53:35So the one that I've linked to is around five hundred bucks. That's the
- 53:39PS nine version. Even raw goes around that range, and the ten will
- 53:45run you a thousand bucks or so. So it is a rare card,
- 53:47there aren't very many of them out there, but certainly an iconic and very
- 53:52cool card it is, and I think it's the epitome of tops now,
- 53:55which is there's value to be found, but it's it's every once in a
- 54:01while they make an iconic card and the values through the roof on those things.
- 54:07Uh, but the vast majority of murn dollar boxes like it's it's an
- 54:09interesting dynamic. And I don't have a whole lot of top stout cards,
- 54:15but they do make some really good ones. When they're taking those those photos
- 54:17in the instance and making someone of it the disappointing pieces, why don't they
- 54:22use the photos in your flagship products like that photo should be used as one
- 54:29of his you know, iconic series one type card or sp or something like
- 54:32that. It's like, come on, guys, uh, you gotta you
- 54:36gotta use what you got there. Uh and and make the best of it.
- 54:38Don't waste on a top stout card, but good pick none none the
- 54:43list. Yeah. They also did not go full bore and include Orlando Arcia
- 54:46in the card, which I mean, maybe that's too disrespectful, but I
- 54:51mean they should have. Yeah. Okay, well we're gonna move on to
- 54:57our first combo person in terms of doing this monthly PC as Louise Heel from
- 55:02the New York Yankees won both the Pitcher of the Month and the Rookie of
- 55:07the Month in the al and for good reason. He pitched thirty eight point
- 55:10two innings for six wins. He had six starts, six wins, punched
- 55:16out forty four in those eighty thirty eight and two thirds with a point seven
- 55:23ERA. That I mean, he was absurdly electric, only allowed three total
- 55:29runs, two of those were on solo shots. So, like that is
- 55:34an impressive month from Louise Heel, who has come out of nowhere to become
- 55:38a really like dominant pitcher and one of the top pitchers in our fantasy game
- 55:43right now that I know. I suggested trying to pick him up in a
- 55:46trade earlier, but I'm now kind of regretting the folly of my ways there
- 55:51because, like, I don't know who would be trading you, Louise Heel,
- 55:53because whoever has them, I'm sure they're doing really well in all their
- 55:57pitching standings. And that's the main reason why Louis Heel oddly has a ton
- 56:02of cards because as like a New York Yankee, when you come through their
- 56:07system and you roll out into one of their flagship sets, it doesn't matter,
- 56:13like if you're a utility man. Or Louis Heel, who came up
- 56:16as kind of like a swingman kind of relief prospect. He has a ton
- 56:21of cards in his twenty twenty two year from when he was a rookie in
- 56:25the flagship. He's got nineteen hundred and fifteen cards in total, even though
- 56:30he's only been around for a couple of years. That's kind of crazy and
- 56:34just shows how much kind of the printing has gone crazy over the past couple
- 56:39of years, and also what happens when you are a New York Yankee.
- 56:43So with that we were able to distill it down to our two favorite cards.
- 56:46Brew I'll let you pick first here. Yeah, well, I will
- 56:50say, you know, I look at Louis Heel as one of those like
- 56:52maybe biggest cell now canvas from fancy perspective because there are so many red flags.
- 56:58But speaking of flags, I am going to a what I consider iconic
- 57:04card. I mentioned earlier how it is hard to find Yankee cards that I
- 57:07really love from the I Appeal. So I found the most I Appeal card
- 57:09I possibly could from Luis Heel, which is twenty twenty two National Treasures it
- 57:14is his rookie card, unlicensed, but because he is facing the other direction,
- 57:17you can't tell the difference, which is okay for me. His auto
- 57:22patch out of twenty five, like I said, from National Treasures, and
- 57:28the patch on that one, it is about a quarter of the patch from
- 57:35what I'd say. It's the sleeve of the Yankees logo from the Jersey,
- 57:38which is always interesting to me. When it's an out of twenty five and
- 57:40has such an iconic patch like that should be saved for out of five,
- 57:45out of ten or one of one. But this is an absolutely beautiful card.
- 57:50Patriotic is all get out. It's got the stars, it's got the
- 57:52stripes, and of anything, that's what actually color matches with the Yankees logo
- 57:58is the stars and the stripes. So I found the closest color match I
- 58:01possibly could from Louis Heel. It is interesting. The one thing I cannot
- 58:07tell about this card is it really does look like a a pat or a
- 58:13sticker auto. But he signed past the sticker, so I'm really confused about
- 58:17that and how he managed that. But that's okay. I'm sure somebody just
- 58:22finished it for him, knowing tops and fanatics, but actually not even tops
- 58:27and fanatics here, and I started we're talking unlicensational treasures here. But yeah,
- 58:32love the card. It's it's great if you are interested in it.
- 58:37Again, maybe not the best selling here from a Chase the Brakes on eBay
- 58:42seventy two feedback ninety eight point six, so maybe a little questionable. We're
- 58:45only asking five thousand dollars for this card, so I'm sure you can get
- 58:51it for four if you are interested. But this is the one I'm adam
- 58:53to my virtual PC today. But I would also be selling if I had
- 58:59this card today because his value, especially from a pitching perspective, will never
- 59:02be higher. Oh yeah, I mean actually, like I've probably got some
- 59:07Lewis Heel like autos from twenty twenty two. I've got a dig out of
- 59:09boxes to try to list on eBay while I can, because like I pulled
- 59:14a few and I was just like so disappointed as he's been out with shoulder
- 59:17injuries and battled all sorts of problems. But yeah, now's the time to
- 59:22get those least heel cards listed while he's hot. And this is a beautiful
- 59:27card, man, This is like one of the craziest cards I've ever seen
- 59:30that if you just only listen to us describe these cards and never actually look
- 59:36at them, this is maybe the one out of all of them that I
- 59:37would look them up, because I don't think it's not that like we're not
- 59:43great wordsmith's here on this podcast, but there's no way we can do any
- 59:46justice. Like how crazy patriotic and just like perfectly matched this card is.
- 59:52This is one of those cards. And you said we are not artists with
- 59:57our words, but if you were to pain to card to just do it,
- 1:00:00like you could take Louise Heel off this card and I still want the
- 1:00:04card. It's true, Like I don't care take the player's name off and
- 1:00:07take the auto effort. This card itself is a work of art. With
- 1:00:12the pats that they have and with with the vibrant colors of the flag that
- 1:00:15they've managed to work in here. It is just absolutely phenomenal that they have
- 1:00:21have this. And again it is player Warren slash us. So I'm going
- 1:00:24to say it's used in some game here, but it is. It is
- 1:00:29just a it is a work of art for Louis Heel. So I went
- 1:00:34with the the high end perspective I'm kind of yelling around here. Where did
- 1:00:39you go with Louise Heel do anything crazy? Yes? I also went super
- 1:00:44high end, so I went the one of one rookie patch auto route here
- 1:00:49and this is from twenty twenty two tops Inception is up on eBay right now.
- 1:00:55You can get this one for the low price of two thousand dollars.
- 1:00:59But which more reputable seller here. We've got Jazzmy prov with a twenty eight
- 1:01:04to fifty nine feedback rating one hundred percent positive, so maybe you will be
- 1:01:07into this tops Inception RPA from Louis Heel and twenty twenty two inception. I
- 1:01:15really liked the design in terms of like it was like molecular and eighties and
- 1:01:23also like had this kind of chemical engineering feel with like the bonds of the
- 1:01:28chemicals that you draw on stuff. And this patch is wow, what a
- 1:01:34You can't get a much better patch as a Yankees fan. This is cut
- 1:01:37right out of the center of the n Y on the on the chest and
- 1:01:40so it is smacked right in the middle of the cards, so you get
- 1:01:45a little bit of like that ny action the negative space created by the white.
- 1:01:50I think it's just a beautiful card. That they've centered up the sticker
- 1:01:53auto, which is a bummer from Inception because this would be really crazy if
- 1:01:59this was an an on card auto. But I don't think you're gonna be
- 1:02:02able to find like a much better pseudo color matched as well RPA of Luis
- 1:02:08Heel out there, because the one of ones from Inception that you're were like
- 1:02:15this kind of like black or graphite or something like that. So it all
- 1:02:19looks pretty well. It all works together pretty well in terms of bringing together
- 1:02:23the Yankees and just a nice photo of Luis Heel there. So I think
- 1:02:28it's a it's a great example of like where you can go right with Tops
- 1:02:32and cheception overall that like when you get a really nice patch, you get
- 1:02:37a really kind of good looking color match, Tops Inception can can work in
- 1:02:42like the best circumstances for sure. Yeah, I personally love Tops Inception.
- 1:02:45It's one of those that doesn't actually hold its value ironically for how beautiful the
- 1:02:50cards are. It does over time really teams seem to drop the value.
- 1:02:54But they are beautiful cards. They're great. And the one you picked out
- 1:02:59here because it is basically has the Yankees logo well centered there. It is
- 1:03:05a great, great patch and he managed to sign on the stick with this
- 1:03:07time, which was great to see as well. Yeah, I kept it
- 1:03:10all together so I didn't have to worry about somebody doctoring over the top of
- 1:03:15it. Okay. The next player that we have is from the NL Pitcher
- 1:03:21of the Month, and that is Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves, who
- 1:03:24in May produced a zero point five to six ear array in thirty two innings
- 1:03:30of work, won all five of his outings. He had an absurd forty
- 1:03:35five to two strikeout to walk rate last month, and gave it all right
- 1:03:39back on June first, as he allowed eight runs against the Athletics at home.
- 1:03:45Just a total gut shot. If you've had Chris Saale, he kind
- 1:03:49of led me to the top of the Pertz League for a little bit in
- 1:03:52our rasball commoners leagues because that May as good as Louis Heels was that May
- 1:03:59from Chris Sale was otherworldly. That like, if you took him the fact
- 1:04:04that he's still even like pitching at this point and is giving you sixty five
- 1:04:08innings total of a three point zero sixty ra you've got a feel like you're
- 1:04:13one of the luckiest people alive because this has been quite the resurgent year for
- 1:04:17Chrisale so far down in Atlanta. With that in mind, Brew, what
- 1:04:21do you pick in for your PC here for Chrisale. Yeah, So I'm
- 1:04:27gonna speak out of both sides of my mouth here because I just said that
- 1:04:30it's really hard to pick Yankees cards because of the lack of color match when
- 1:04:33your colors are black, gray, and white. And here we are with
- 1:04:38the white Sox, and I'm gonna go with a color match of a black
- 1:04:41card. And so I'm going with the twenty eleven tops Chrome Rookie Auto black
- 1:04:46Refractor that is out of one hundred. It is, you know, a
- 1:04:54iconic card for Chrissale, having that Rookie Auto. There's just something about Chris
- 1:05:00Sale when he first came up, like I don't know, it's possible that
- 1:05:03he was lankier than when he is now, but I feel like he was
- 1:05:06like this that leanky throw on the big black jersey building on him and just
- 1:05:14slaying at home. Like there is nothing like that when Chris Sale first came
- 1:05:17up. And I think this is a fantastic example of where a black color
- 1:05:24match works, which is generally going to be a chrome refractor like the chrome
- 1:05:30black refractors hit different And this is the only one really of Chris Sale that
- 1:05:34I could find a real true chrome black refractor outside of like a heritage or
- 1:05:41something like that. This is a key one here. So the one I'm
- 1:05:45talking about here is a pop one because it's graded by BGS is eight point
- 1:05:49five. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a great thing to be a pop one
- 1:05:53because you're not talking about a PSA and you're also not talking about the greatest
- 1:05:56grade. But you can have it for a very cheap price of roughly nine
- 1:06:00hundred dollars out there from a more reputable cellar. It appears over on eBay.
- 1:06:05But this is a fantastic card if I'm you know, a White Sox
- 1:06:11fan. The only thing that could be make this better if it was number
- 1:06:13forty nine out of one hundred. This one's number fifteen. So I'm sorry
- 1:06:16I didn't hit the the holy Grail from a black refractor with Chris Sale,
- 1:06:23but had to happen with the White Sox jersey because that's who Chris Sale is
- 1:06:25to me, So loving this one, Yeah, I think it's a great
- 1:06:29choice, and surprisingly like that's a good price on such a rare card,
- 1:06:34And honestly, like Chris Sale has always been relatively cheap, And part of
- 1:06:41it too is maybe like what makes this card iconic in my mind is like
- 1:06:45Chris Sale like had two pictures, it felt like on his rookie cards.
- 1:06:49It's like, yeah, just like he they pumped out all those cards so
- 1:06:54fast because he came up so quickly and was lightning out of the gate that
- 1:06:58like the hype didn't white get to build the way it did with like Steven
- 1:07:01Strasburg, you know, and so like it fel felt like Tops rushed a
- 1:07:06lot of those Chris Sale cards out the door back in twenty eleven and only
- 1:07:11used a few photos of him. But I'm surprised that his prices are still
- 1:07:16relatively cheap overall in the hobby, because I mean, he's gonna be in
- 1:07:20the Hall of Fame discussion when this career wraps up. He's at forty nine
- 1:07:25and a half fangrafs War right now, with one hundred and twenty eight wins.
- 1:07:29It's just gonna be a little bit of a factor of like, you've
- 1:07:30got to put some pictures in and Chris Sale, if he's able to put
- 1:07:35together a few more years. Is gonna be in that conversation. I think
- 1:07:40for something like a Mike Mosina or honestly like Kevin Brown should be in.
- 1:07:46But he's in that sort of like range as a picture overall. You know,
- 1:07:50Yeah, I agree. He It's gonna be tough because the wins and
- 1:07:56the health factor for him, but talent wise, there's no question he is
- 1:08:00absolutely that kind of picture. So you're right, there's lots to like Aboutchrisale.
- 1:08:04This is kind of card that I'm taking and trying to get out of
- 1:08:06the case and just keep it raw. Yeah, that would be awesome.
- 1:08:11Okay, Well, with my card, I'm going to pick a variation of
- 1:08:15the twenty twenty four Tops Big League number fifty seven, the Blackfoil, partly
- 1:08:19because I wanted to find the foil, Like there's like a sparklefoil one that's
- 1:08:25of ten, but there weren't any of them listed. So the Blackfoil is
- 1:08:30the only picture that I've got, and that one is of twenty five.
- 1:08:33Pretty affordable card right now. You can get there's a couple of the Money
- 1:08:38Bay and they're going around like that ten to twenty dollars range. I only
- 1:08:41pick this because this is Chris Sale's only current card that's out there in a
- 1:08:45Brave's uniform, So obviously he'll be included in either Top Series two or Tops
- 1:08:53Updated as a Brave and be probably in more sets as we get further and
- 1:08:57further into twenty twenty four. Here, if you want a picture of Chrisale
- 1:09:02pitching in in Atlanta Braves uniform, you're gonna have to go to Tops big
- 1:09:05League right now. And along with it, I also kind of wanted to
- 1:09:09put this card in there because I have really enjoyed twenty twenty four Tops Big
- 1:09:13League. I think it was a pretty solid set that I almost kind of
- 1:09:16wish this was the flagship design over what the flagship design was this year.
- 1:09:21And yeah, this is, I think, just a fun card and you
- 1:09:26get all the great information on the back of the card that comes with Tops
- 1:09:31big League, and honestly the back of the card too, like the back
- 1:09:34of the cards on the Flagship are so boring this year that it's great to
- 1:09:38see just a little bit of design on the back of these Big League cards.
- 1:09:43And yeah, if Chrysale I think comes up again for any more PCs
- 1:09:46later this year, hopefully we get a few other Braves cards considered. Yeah,
- 1:09:51you're right, there's lots like about big League this year, which is
- 1:09:54interesting to say when we lost Opening Day, but we still had Big League
- 1:09:59for the low in collectibles here. Uh And to your point, this is
- 1:10:02an out of twenty five black foil for only twenty bucks. Yeah, that's
- 1:10:08that's really reasonable. There's something about Chris Sale that's that's just cheap. I
- 1:10:13guess. I guess, so I don't. Yeah, not enough respect on
- 1:10:15his name in the hobby. Okay, well, we've got one player left,
- 1:10:20and that is the NL Rookie Player of the Month. That award went
- 1:10:26to the Milwaukee Brewers's Joey Ortiz, who hit three oh seven, three ninety
- 1:10:32one, five eighty seven, good for a one seventy four WRC plus in
- 1:10:36May. That came with four homers and twelve RBI. This is exactly what
- 1:10:43I thought, kind of like peak Joey RTIs could be, as he put
- 1:10:46up a double digit walk rate and only a twelve percent k rate, that
- 1:10:50he's just a good kind of classic hitter in a little bit of like a
- 1:10:56mold of like what prime Jonathan India was. I think I think that like,
- 1:11:00that's what Joey Ortiz can be for us in the fantasy game. And
- 1:11:04the nice thing too, is that he is a little bit younger than when
- 1:11:09Jonathan India came around. So if you're in any sort of like dynasty situations,
- 1:11:13I think I would be buying into Joey RTIs. He looked really amazing
- 1:11:17and he fits in with the Milwaukee Brewers just approach overall really well. It's
- 1:11:23a great team and a great landing spot for him that I think Brewers fans
- 1:11:28in the long run, it'll make it easier to swallow that Corbyn Burns trade
- 1:11:31at the end of the day once they kind of see that Joey RTIs is
- 1:11:34going to be contending for All Star nods at second base for the next five
- 1:11:40to six years. I think in Milwaukee, Yeah, I think, I
- 1:11:44think you're absolutely right here with Ortiz. Like that Jonathan India comp is a
- 1:11:47great conflict. Also, maybe not the greatest thing for Ortez because the arc
- 1:11:53of that early career, But I do I do think you make a good
- 1:11:56call there on Ortiz. This is probably his peak, but peak just some
- 1:12:01good solid under the radar value for Joyrts. Yeah, and hopefully I mean,
- 1:12:05if he what's costed India has been injury. So if he can avoid
- 1:12:11injury and stay healthy, I think Joey RTIs can kind of keep being this
- 1:12:14where you're looking at like a two seventy shitter with fifteen to twenty homers,
- 1:12:19fifteen to twenty steals and you know, really good counting stats, so great
- 1:12:25middle and field option with that though he is he only had his rookie cards
- 1:12:30in twenty twenty two update for the first time last year, so he's got
- 1:12:33a very much more limited selection. Doesn't even have like a bowman first auto.
- 1:12:39He has a regular bowman first, but he doesn't have any autographed bowman
- 1:12:43first So he is a little rare from that perspective in today's game that there
- 1:12:48wasn't a lot of early signings or lots of early cards for Joey RTIs,
- 1:12:51So if you do have autographed cards of him, they are a lot more
- 1:12:57limited and I think could hold a little bit more value out there in the
- 1:13:00market. But with that in mind, Brew, what is you picking?
- 1:13:03What are you picking for the PC this month for Joey Artis. Yeah,
- 1:13:09I'm I'm following your lead here with your Chris Sale pick in the Braves Jersey
- 1:13:14and I found what I believe is the only Joey RTIs card in a Milwaukee
- 1:13:17Brewers jersey, which is his tops Now card that had a print run of
- 1:13:24four twenty eight. This card was came out in what was this April?
- 1:13:33I think it's twenty sixth from his first MLB home run and a walk off
- 1:13:42against the Yankees and extra so right at the beginning of the season here that
- 1:13:46first month. Great great card, great looking card. You know him's finishing
- 1:13:53his swing on that MLB, first MLB home run. So as a PC
- 1:13:59clib if you are, this is one of those ones where I actually love
- 1:14:04to collect rainbows of tops Now. If there's like a moment that especially,
- 1:14:09like if you attend to that game or something like that, that's the kind
- 1:14:13of thing to go after because the tops Now cards do. Because we can't
- 1:14:16get through a whole pod without talking about parallels. Tops Now cards generally come
- 1:14:21in a out of forty nine, blue, out of twenty five, Purple,
- 1:14:25out of ten, Red, out of five Orange, and out of
- 1:14:28one gold in addition to the base card, and those were just randomly inserted
- 1:14:32with the base cards when you purchase them. So I had to go for
- 1:14:36the one card that I could find, or Ties in the Bruers Jersey,
- 1:14:40because to me, he wasn't really ever, it wasn't with the Oriols enough
- 1:14:44to actually be an oriol He is a brewer, and that's where he's starting
- 1:14:47to make his name, and so you had to find that card and stick
- 1:14:51with it. Even though Orioles color match cards are one of my favorites,
- 1:14:57and I'm trying not to forecast where you went. I didn't look ahead,
- 1:15:01but that was really really tempting, but I had to stick with the Milwaukee
- 1:15:05Brewers. I would say whites at the end of the day. Yeah,
- 1:15:10I totally understand, and I did go that route with the Orioles, especially,
- 1:15:15this card was too goofy to not pick. If you do recall from
- 1:15:18twenty twenty three TOPS Update, this is when they started doing the parallels that
- 1:15:26synced up with whatever holiday was around the release. So it for the twenty
- 1:15:30twenty four Series one, it was right around Easter and Spring, so there
- 1:15:36were you know, bunny parallels, Easter Egg parallels, so on and so
- 1:15:40forth. Twenty twenty three TOPS Update had all the Halloween parallels, so you
- 1:15:45know, exactly where I'm going with this. With the Baltimore Orioles jersey,
- 1:15:48the base one does look cool still that you know, if you want just
- 1:15:53the regular black and orange stripes a little less goofy, that is a much
- 1:15:58more obtainable right out there, But i'd go Zany I went with the Halloween
- 1:16:02skeletal, the Skeleton parallel, which is number two of fifty. So honestly,
- 1:16:10even this it's a ten dollars card, it's kind of a steal for
- 1:16:14how rare of a rookie card this is, and given just like how ridiculous
- 1:16:19it is with the goofy dancing skeletons in the background on this card of you
- 1:16:25know, some player of some repute who you know, could It's just I
- 1:16:30think it's just really funny, like if you I'm just trying to imagine like
- 1:16:33cal Ripkens, like tops rookie card being with the skeletal parallels Skelton parallel as
- 1:16:42well, just like you know this, if this does go on to be,
- 1:16:45like you know, just like a really nice career for Joey Ortiz overall,
- 1:16:49it'll just be funny looking back that his rookie card all had all these
- 1:16:55weird Halloween parallels that just look absolutely beautiful, and so we are cementing this
- 1:17:01one into the May Player at the Month PC had to get a Halloween in
- 1:17:05there. I love the fact that I call it color match and that was
- 1:17:09not the color match I was thinking with the orioles, but I guess Halloween
- 1:17:14and orange they worked well together. So I think it's a great, great
- 1:17:16pick and a great way to kind of round out our Player of the Month
- 1:17:19PCs here on the pod call. So loving this segment. I think it's
- 1:17:25one of my favorites that we do. And there are some cool crazy cards
- 1:17:29out there. If you get a chance, jump out to the pod notes,
- 1:17:32look through these cards, tell us your favorite one in the comments,
- 1:17:35because yeah, there's nothing better than a going from a bat knob or a
- 1:17:43refractor auto to Aaron Judge standing the cornfield and Joey Ortiz with a skeleton behind
- 1:17:49him. Yeah, exactly. We run the gamut in here this month.
- 1:17:54But yeah, if you also have any cards that you think would be better
- 1:17:59fits for PC, you can also email us at Cardscategories at gmail dot com.
- 1:18:03Drop us a line there, let us know what you would want to
- 1:18:06put in your PC. For some of these players we can consider them,
- 1:18:11especially if they come up for more Player of the Months that some of these
- 1:18:15we didn't get any repeats this month, but I think we're probably going to
- 1:18:18in the future, and so we're gonna have to get creative, especially if
- 1:18:21there's another Joey Ortiz Player of the Month Rookie of the Month award, because
- 1:18:27he does not have very many cards and we will run out of cards to
- 1:18:30pick very soon. So brew let everybody know out there where they can find
- 1:18:34you on socials and if they want to reach your pieces, Yep, find
