- 0:07Happy Christmas to you. Thanks for the card. That's very nice.
- 0:10Speaker 2: It's rat card.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And Sean is here to talk about the movies. He's
- 0:15a reporter and editor at the Salt Lake Tribune sl
- 0:18trip dot com. He's also the movie cricket and you
- 0:22can go to movie cricket dot net to find his
- 0:25past reviews going back many years.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Right yep.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So if you're curious about a movie, go look and
- 0:31see what Sean said about it.
- 0:32Speaker 3: We've got quite a few to get to today, so
- 0:34let's begin.
- 0:36Speaker 4: We've got two children's movies that are opening today, and
- 0:39then we've got three movies for grown ups that I
- 0:40can recommend that are opening on Christmas. All right, we
- 0:43will start with Mufasa the Lion King. This is the
- 0:46prequel to the twenty seventeen computer animated version of The
- 0:50Lion King. That's where the animals were supposed to look
- 0:53real even as they were singing Elton Johnsng's yes. And
- 0:57what we learned then that Disney didn't learn is that
- 1:00a cartoon warthog is cute, but a computer animated, real
- 1:04looking war hog is terrifying. Yes, yeah, uh this movie
- 1:08leans heavily in the new one leans very heavily into
- 1:11the Timin and Humba as comic relief. Raviki is narrating
- 1:15the story of Simba's dad, Mufasa and how he he
- 1:20he He.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Wasn't always royalty, He wasn't always the king. Yeah you
- 1:25earn it.
- 1:25Speaker 4: He was an orphan. He was a cub that was
- 1:26snatched away from his parents in a flood. And he
- 1:29gets adopted by a new pride uh uh and and
- 1:32brothers with the air apparent Taka Scar.
- 1:37Speaker 2: We will find that out later.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Jeremy Irons was in.
- 1:41Speaker 2: The movie in the original animating. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 4: So while while is this happening, though, there's a new pride,
- 1:47new group of white lions that from the outside that
- 1:50is stomping through all the all the prides, all the
- 1:53all the territories, and only only uh Mufasa and Taca
- 1:57survived this and they they you know that, and you
- 2:00know the white lions are bad guys because the leader,
- 2:03because the lead, because the leader is voiced by Matts Michaelson.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how you know.
- 2:08Speaker 4: There you go, and so they meet up with a lion,
- 2:11it's Sarabbi and they go looking for a mythical place
- 2:13where they can live free, and there's a love triangle.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And so on.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Uh, this is a mishmash of old storylines, Moses Shakespeare
- 2:20and it's just a slog.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's two hours long, and I don't know why.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And instead of out in John, we've got lim Manuel
- 2:27Miranda and I mean it's not one of his best.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It's now they have the realistic looking ward log. Yeah,
- 2:35who farts, they all all the things.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's stupid. Yes, and it's.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Voiced by Seth Rogen. So yeah, two and a half stars.
- 2:44I mean technically it looks good. But otherwise two and
- 2:47a half stars from Mufaster The Lion King.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But you give a.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Little bit better rating to Sonic Hedgehog three.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Yeah, either these movies are getting better or my resistance
- 2:55is breaking down.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And they've already a green lid of fourth one.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Yes, and they set up what the fourth one is
- 3:01gonna be, and and the and the the The Sonic
- 3:03fans in the audience, including the two that I brought with.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Me, uh, were like, oh, they were very excited when.
- 3:09Speaker 2: They saw that.
- 3:10Speaker 4: When they saw the teaser for the for the next one.
- 3:12So in the second movie, you remember, we had Knuckles
- 3:16joining up as a villain, and then he turned into
- 3:19a partner a friend and it's on and uh and
- 3:22so so they're now Team Sonic with Sonic and Tails
- 3:25and Knuckles. And this time we start with a new
- 3:29character who is a villain, Shadows. He's essentially Sonic if
- 3:34Sonic was raised by an evil corporation.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Okay, Sonic has been raised.
- 3:38Speaker 4: By evil never mind, and and Knuckles was voiced by
- 3:41Sonic is voiced by Keanu Reeves.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So well that the new guy.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Okay, the new guy, and so Sonic and his friends
- 3:49uh have to try to stop Shadow. And then they
- 3:52realized they can't do it alone. They need to bring
- 3:54in somebody very smart and who knows how to stop aliens.
- 3:56So of course they have to partner up with Dot Doctor. Yeah,
- 4:02my enemy is my friend.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So Jim Carrey is back and uh.
- 4:07Speaker 4: And then the new wrinkle or really lots of wrinkles
- 4:09is that Robotics. You've reunited with his grandfather, another evil scientist,
- 4:14also played.
- 4:14Speaker 3: By Jim also played by Jim Carrey, So you're.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Double double your Jim Carrey. Fun. This is fun. It's
- 4:20not demanding. I mean, you know, it's a very and.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And if if you have people in your life who
- 4:24play Sonic and bring them along, they will enjoy it
- 4:28more than they will enjoy it more than you will.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And they will explain the stuff that you didn't get.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Isn't fun to see Jim Carrey, though, it is fun
- 4:35to see Jim Carren. Yeah, yes, I hear, he's quite
- 4:37quite quite good.
- 4:38Speaker 2: He's always I mean, he's always good.
- 4:39Speaker 4: So three stars for Sonic the Hedgehog. All right, baby Girl, Yes,
- 4:43so three three on Christmas Day? Quickly here baby Girl.
- 4:47Nicole Kimmen as a CEO who starts an affair with
- 4:50a much younger intern played by Harris Dickinson, and they
- 4:54they trips to hotels get pretty kinky because the intern
- 4:57starts bossing around the boss and she may be enjoy No,
- 5:01this is a very central, supercharged movie by a woman director.
- 5:05And and you know, as a guy, I will say
- 5:07that I've never realized how prevalent the male gaze is
- 5:10until you watch an erotic drama like this that doesn't
- 5:12have it.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Oh icy, it is, it is. It's really good. Three
- 5:16and a half stars for Baby Girl.
- 5:17Speaker 1: All right? Is that based mainly on Nicole Kidman's performance.
- 5:22Speaker 4: On that, on that and the and the way the
- 5:25way it handles, like the power dynamics of of this,
- 5:29of this relationship.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So and you should caution people perhaps it's quite quite sexy.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah, all three of these are very are rated. Yes, okay,
- 5:39so yeah, No.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Saratu is coming up. Well, he is coming. You keep seeing,
- 5:44you keep seeing all the ads and he is coming.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:46Speaker 4: This is a remake of the classic nineteen twenty three.
- 5:49It's one hundred years old.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah, the silent film.
- 5:53Speaker 2: The classic silent vampire movie.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Good cast here, Bill scars Guard as Counterlock, the vampire,
- 5:59Nicholas Holt as his his first intended victim who's a
- 6:02young attorney, William Dafoe as the Van Helsing type character.
- 6:08And best of all, I'll tell you this, Lily Rose Debt.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Really.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yes, she plays Holtz Bride who senses Orlock's presence.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Long before he ever gets near. No.
- 6:20Speaker 4: No, this is the thing about the thing about those
- 6:23fratu is it was it was breaking the copyright on
- 6:27Bram Stoker's Dracula, and it was it was it was
- 6:31like it was like a ripoff, initially a ripoff to
- 6:34the point where it went to court and all copies
- 6:37of the of the original were supposed to be destroyed,
- 6:40and somebody, somebody didn't follow that.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Somebody somebody didn't get that memo. That's why we have
- 6:45those frau to this day. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It was.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 4: They couldn't get the rights to Dracula, so they made
- 6:51their own and they got sued and that was the
- 6:53That was what happened a hundred years ago. So Robert
- 6:57Eggers directed this. He did The Lighthouse, he did the Northman.
- 7:00Dark and creepy is like right in his like it's
- 7:04like him doing is just the most natural thing you
- 7:09could possibly pretty good.
- 7:10Speaker 2: But this isn't a throwaway horror film.
- 7:13Speaker 4: This is really good. And seriously, Lily Rose Depp is
- 7:17the reason to watch this. Scars Build, Scars Guard is good.
- 7:20And one thing I like about it is how they
- 7:22they change up the look for for for Nou.
- 7:27Speaker 2: He's he's very big and hulking and has this.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Like Nick Offerman mustache and stuff and and part of
- 7:34the reason they do that is because if you look
- 7:36at the original twenty three, which is very good by
- 7:40and hook nose and every bad, any semitic stereotype you
- 7:43possibly have.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And they they they they definitely steer in the other directions.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So that's what they've been hiding what he looks like
- 7:50in all the trailers. Said yeah, okay, yeah, but he's
- 7:52because we all have a predetermined idea.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Yeah this is this is different, but it's really good
- 7:57and yeah, but like I said, Lily Rose Depp is
- 7:59the is the main He's going to watch three and
- 8:00a half for all.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Right, and then a complete.
- 8:04Speaker 4: This is l This is the biographical drama about the
- 8:07life of Bob Dylan, and it only takes a chunk
- 8:09from sixty one to sixty five.
- 8:11Speaker 1: The beginnings.
- 8:12Speaker 4: The beginnings starts starts with him hitchhiking to New York
- 8:15and then going to visit Woody Guthrie in the hospital
- 8:19after he's had a stroke that was like.
- 8:20Speaker 2: A like a legendary He plays uh Scoop McNairy.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And I, I guess he doesn't say a word, but
- 8:27it's a great because.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It's he's he's, because he's he's he's.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Had a stroke and so he's wordless, but it's a
- 8:31great performance. And there he meets Pete Seeger who introduces
- 8:36him to the New York folk scene and he just
- 8:38takes it on storm. And Edward Norton plays Norton plays
- 8:42a Seager and that's really good. The thing here is okay,
- 8:45Timothy Challame plays Dylan, and the thing about Dylan is
- 8:49that he he was and.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Remains an enigma. Yeah, and you know he's.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And trying to nail down, nail him down for a
- 8:58biographical uh move, you know, to drama like this is
- 9:02like trying to nail Jello.
- 9:03Speaker 2: To the wall.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Well it's called a complete unknown.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Exactly, and that and that was the thing and and
- 9:07he played on that.
- 9:08Speaker 4: He used that as as part of his part of
- 9:11his whole shick.
- 9:13Speaker 2: So the movie is really seen through the women in
- 9:15his life.
- 9:16Speaker 4: There's there's a there's a there's a composite girlfriend played
- 9:19by Elf Fanning who mostly is Susie Routtolo but a
- 9:24little bit of some of the other women he dated.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And then h Monica Barbaro really good as Joan Biez.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Really now she she sings her own songs. Timothy Shallam
- 9:34sings yep, Dylan songs yea. And there I understand. They're
- 9:37both really good, both really good.
- 9:38Speaker 4: You get the soundtrack and it's it's not He's not
- 9:40left sacking Bob Dylan.
- 9:42Speaker 2: He is singing. It is Timothy singing. He's really good.
- 9:46The movie is great.
- 9:47Speaker 4: It is showing this era of the early six sies
- 9:48and how Dylan rose to fame and then chafed at
- 9:51the expectations of being this folk music hero. It ends
- 9:54with the moment where it all blew up. If you know,
- 9:59if you know Dylan's history, you know what I'm talking about.
- 10:01I do, all right, h three and a half stars, Wow,
- 10:04far completely unknown. Uh, It's yeah, it's really good. And
- 10:07and and Little Tenny is great. That's that's cool. Three
- 10:11different kinds of movies for Christmas Day and all good,
- 10:14all very good too.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Well.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Thank you, Sean, Thank you.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Anything to look forward to.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Uh my top ten list will be coming out next week.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Okay and when you and when we come back, we'll
- 10:24have you talk about that talk about cool.
- 10:27Speaker 1: All right, Thanks, thank you very much.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Sewan means everybody
