- 0:00Good morning friends, it's friendsly.
- 0:03Welcome back to the podcast. I'm realizing as I say, friends
- 0:07and friendsly that is kind of a tongue twister, but welcome
- 0:11back. So glad y'all are here.
- 0:13We are going to be reading once again in Matthew and we're going
- 0:16to be in chapter 25 verses 14 through 30 today.
- 0:21So we've been talking a lot about Jesus's return and
- 0:25touching on complacency, that being spiritually sleepy and in
- 0:30an overly comfortable posture is very dangerous.
- 0:34But today we are going to be seeing how apathy, it's kind of
- 0:40a different angle, it's related to complacency, but it's still
- 0:44different how not feeling too comfortable, but too little and
- 0:48too disengaged is also very dangerous.
- 0:52So with that, let's go ahead and get started in verse 14 again.
- 0:58It will be like a man going on a journey who called his servants
- 1:02and entrusted his wealth to them to 1.
- 1:05He gave 5 bags of gold to another 2 bags into another one
- 1:09bag each according to his ability.
- 1:12Then he went on his journey. The man who had received 5 bags
- 1:16of gold win at once and put his money to work and gained 5 bags
- 1:21more. So also the one with two bags of
- 1:24gold gained 2 more, but the man who had received one bag went
- 1:29off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
- 1:33After a long time, the master of those servants returned and
- 1:37settled accounts with them. The man who had received 5 bags
- 1:41of gold brought the other five. Master, he said, you entrusted
- 1:46me with 5 bags of gold. See, I've gained 5 more, his
- 1:51master replied. Well done, good and faithful
- 1:54servant. You have been faithful with a
- 1:56few things. I will put you in charge of many
- 1:58things. Come and share your master's
- 2:01happiness. The man with two bags of gold
- 2:04also came. Master, he said, you entrusted
- 2:07me with two bags of gold. See, I have gained 2 more.
- 2:11His master replied. Well done, good and faithful
- 2:14servant, you have been faithful with a few things.
- 2:17I will put you in charge of many things.
- 2:20Come and share your master's happiness.
- 2:23Then the man who had received one bag of gold came.
- 2:26Master, he said, I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where
- 2:31you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered
- 2:34seed. So I was afraid and went out and
- 2:37hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to
- 2:41you, his master replied. You wicked lazy servant, So you
- 2:47knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where where
- 2:51I have not scattered seed. Well then you should have put my
- 2:55money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned
- 2:59I would have received it back with interest.
- 3:02So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has
- 3:0510 bags, for whoever has will be given more, and they will have
- 3:10an abundance. Whoever does not have even what
- 3:13they have will be taken from them and throw that worthless
- 3:17serving outside into the darkness where there will be
- 3:20weeping and gnashing of teeth. OK, so let's tackle this first,
- 3:28a little cultural note. The word talent is also used
- 3:32here for the loan money. And it was not just a skill, it
- 3:36was a very large amount of money.
- 3:39But biblically, this is representing any resource that
- 3:42God has entrusted to us. So practically, that could
- 3:46include your time, your own abilities and gifts, your
- 3:51energy, your opportunities, the people in your life, your
- 3:55relationships, or even the season that you're in.
- 3:59And I believe that verse 15 is key.
- 4:02It says the master gave to each servant according to his
- 4:05ability. That means that no one was set
- 4:09up to fail. He didn't give too much or too
- 4:13little. He gave them exactly what they
- 4:15could handle. And this is showing us that God
- 4:19knows exactly what we need. Now there is, of course, a
- 4:25difference between a need and a want.
- 4:29We know that God is a good provider.
- 4:32Philippians 419 says that He supplies all of our needs and we
- 4:36also know that he's a good giver.
- 4:38James 117 reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from
- 4:43the Father above. Sometimes we might ask God for
- 4:48things and it could be good things, good desires and not
- 4:52understand why he says not yet and you don't get it right away.
- 4:57But we have to remember only God can see above all search the
- 5:03depths of our hearts, and He knows when our hearts are ripe
- 5:06for that blessing and when the timing is perfect and aligned.
- 5:11So this parable is also making something super clear.
- 5:16This is not a competition y'all. What we have each been given is
- 5:22not meant to be compared to the person next to you.
- 5:25That's actually irrelevant. Romans 12 reminds us that we all
- 5:29have different functions, We have different callings and
- 5:32gifts, and that is on purpose because God has designated each
- 5:37of us according to what he wants to use us for and ultimately
- 5:41what we can handle. So I want us to notice the first
- 5:46sermon. Scripture says he went to work
- 5:50at once. That means he did not question
- 5:55why he received what he did. He didn't compare it to the
- 5:58person next to him. He did not.
- 6:00He eagerly invested in what he was given to honor his master.
- 6:06So I just want to ask you right now, are you in any way
- 6:10questioning or doubting God because of what he's entrusted
- 6:14to you? Possibly because of how quote UN
- 6:17quote little or how much it might feel.
- 6:21Or are you faithfully using what you have with a thankful and
- 6:26hard working heart? What if God is preparing you for
- 6:31more by actually starting you with less?
- 6:35Think about how that's actually so kind, because if we always
- 6:40received the biggest opportunity or that answered prayer right
- 6:45away, it could destroy us if we were not fully anchored in Him
- 6:50and ready for it. And remember that one day every
- 6:57earthly thing fades. The only thing, the only one who
- 7:02remains is God. And very often God teaches us in
- 7:08the hidden, quiet places where there is no outward recognition
- 7:14or approval from others, because it teaches us how to trust Him
- 7:18and Him alone. So let's move on to diligence.
- 7:24I was reading Proverbs to sleep last night and came across
- 7:28Proverbs 21. Five.
- 7:30It reads The plans of the diligent lead surely to
- 7:34abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
- 7:41This is showing us diligence does not come naturally.
- 7:45It reflects strong character, faithfulness in the mundane
- 7:49everyday activities. It shows that you trust God's
- 7:53plan over your own timeline. It proves that your faith is
- 7:58rooted in God. It's not in immediate results or
- 8:03what He can give you. So I just want to encourage
- 8:06y'all do your daily work out of love for God because y'all, we
- 8:13would not have breath in our lungs, we would not be alive if
- 8:18it weren't for Him. And everything that you have
- 8:21right now is borrowed. We are caretakers, We're not
- 8:24owners. Scripture says First Corinthians
- 8:28619 through 20 that we are not our own.
- 8:32We were bought with the price. God is more than worthy of our
- 8:36diligence, of our resilience, no matter what kind of work that He
- 8:42places in front of us. Now, let's take a quick look at
- 8:46the third servant. So this man, he was only
- 8:50thinking about himself. He wanted to be protected and he
- 8:55had fear and he wanted to control and preserve what he
- 9:00wanted. And God warns us about
- 9:03selfishness. He says to flee selfish
- 9:06ambition. Philippians 2-3.
- 9:09And self centeredness can come from two places.
- 9:14The first one, thinking too little of yourself.
- 9:17So insecurity can be birthed from feeling unqualified or
- 9:22unworthy of the task at hand or what God has given you, or
- 9:26possibly thinking too highly of yourself.
- 9:29So pride and arrogance, but both miss the point because you have
- 9:37to believe and come to terms with the fact that God gave you
- 9:42your assignment for a reason. This prompts us to live with
- 9:46humble confidence. We get humility knowing that, as
- 9:51Romans 1136 says, from him and through him and for Him are all
- 9:56things, and we get confidence trusting that from Ephesians
- 10:01210. We are His workmanship created
- 10:04in Christ Jesus to do good works that He prepared.
- 10:07He prepared in advance for us to do so we cannot make excuses to
- 10:14avoid what God has appointed us to do.
- 10:18And I just want you all to think about where you are right now,
- 10:21specifically your city and state, your school, your job,
- 10:26your friendships. God placed you, you specifically
- 10:31there to reflect His glory through the way that you act and
- 10:36love those around you. Y'all.
- 10:40The bottom line is that God rewards faithfulness.
- 10:46It flows from a willing heart, one that is submitted to His
- 10:49Spirit and obedient. Those with no passion for God's
- 10:54Kingdom work cannot expect the same reward as those who
- 10:59actually steward it well. You're either utilizing what God
- 11:03has given you or you're not. And I do just want to tag this
- 11:08on at the end that if you're wondering what your gifts are,
- 11:13that is not a bad place to be. There's not something wrong with
- 11:16you. I went through a period of time
- 11:18where I felt confused what exactly my specific gifts were.
- 11:24But here's the amazing thing, you can ask God to reveal them.
- 11:28That has been a constant prayer for me in the season that I'm
- 11:32in. As I look ahead to what job and
- 11:35career I want to be in, I've been asking God, Lord, show me
- 11:39what my gifts and strengths are, what my passions are, and how to
- 11:44use utilize them for your Kingdom.
- 11:47You can also ask friends that know you super well what they
- 11:51see in you. You can ask God for
- 11:54opportunities to practice these things because he delights in
- 11:58answering prayers like that. So with that, let's go ahead and
- 12:02pray. God, thank you for being such a
- 12:08wise and generous father. Thank you that nothing you give
- 12:15us is accidental. Lord, would you forgive us for
- 12:20spiritual apathy or comparison and making excuses that prohibit
- 12:26us from being faithful with what You have given us?
- 12:30Lord, may we steward what you've entrusted to us with diligence,
- 12:34humility, confidence, and with joy.
- 12:39May we trust Your timing, your wisdom, Your purposes.
- 12:44God, make our hearts obedient and fully submitted to You.
- 12:49We want our lives to bring you glory even in the ordinary
- 12:53unseen places. God, we appreciate you so much
- 12:59and we love you. We're so thankful and we want to
- 13:02hear. Well done, my good and faithful
- 13:04servant. We ask this all in your name,
- 13:07Jesus. Amen.
- 13:09OK well I hope y'all have a great rest of your day and I
- 13:14will see y'all on the next podcast.
