- 0:00It's gonna be 50 degrees all week. Yeah. Should
- 0:02we be concerned? Probably. That seems like a bummer.
- 0:05Somone do something. What happened to all the, there
- 0:09were so many articles like this is going to be
- 0:11the coldest winter. I did not see that. Oh. The
- 0:14Farmer's Almanac was like it's going to be frigid.
- 0:17You love referencing the Farmer's Almanac. I feel
- 0:20like it comes up a lot is it just me? Okay it's
- 0:23just. Okay Okay funny story so A's parents sent
- 0:27us a holiday gift but I finally picked it up
- 0:30from the post office yesterday. Okay um there you go. Oh
- 0:33okay. Would you like to explain to the audience
- 0:36what it is? This is a card that says driver is
- 0:39deaf or hard of hearing. Failure to cooperate
- 0:42with verbal commands means I am not hearing you
- 0:46and it has a little ear with a like. Like the
- 0:50slash across the ear. It is the slash but I think
- 0:53it's funny because I feel like it's like it doesn't
- 0:55look like the traditional like Do not. Yeah.
- 0:59Maybe it's the one over in A's country. Quick
- 1:03communication tips. Make eye contact when you
- 1:05speak. I need my hands to communicate. Front
- 1:07restraint only. That's crazy. Very relevant.
- 1:11Very relevant, which I never even thought about
- 1:13until I got that in the mail yesterday. I cannot
- 1:16lip read everything you say. So true. I kind
- 1:18of feel like that should just be like a t -shirt,
- 1:20a little mini card that you can pass out to people.
- 1:23I know. I feel like I need something like this
- 1:25just to hand out to people. I love that they
- 1:27like saw this somewhere and picked it up. Yes.
- 1:30It looks like they found it at like whatever
- 1:33their version of the DMV is. And then on the
- 1:36backside, roadside communication card. And it
- 1:39has images and like words to describe different
- 1:43road violations, presumably so that they could
- 1:47point at them? Yeah so if you get pulled over
- 1:49the police will hopefully say hey you did this
- 1:52like and there's like a picture of someone speeding.
- 1:55And my personal favorite is poor driving. There's
- 1:59one that just says poor driving. Love that. You suck
- 2:01at driving. How does this make you feel? I thought
- 2:04it was hilarious and it also helps that they
- 2:07got me a lot of other thoughtful gifts. If it
- 2:11was just that, that'd be insane. Oh my god, okay,
- 2:13so I wanted to tell you that I was doing research
- 2:15last night about Justina Machado. Yeah. Because
- 2:20I was editing the last episode, and I was like,
- 2:24I think she's in Desperate Housewives. Not true.
- 2:26Feels like she should have been, though. But
- 2:27you know what she did do in 2021? What? A Lifetime
- 2:31original movie called Switched Before Birth.
- 2:36About... Two moms that instead of it being their
- 2:39babies, it's their embryos. Yeah, their embryos
- 2:42are switched and they carry each other's babies.
- 2:44That's crazy. We should watch it in a bonus episode.
- 2:46I was like, I was gagged. I wonder if she was
- 2:49like, isn't this so funny? Because I already
- 2:51kind of did this. Have you heard about the Na'vi
- 2:53sign language in Avatar? You sent me a video
- 2:56about it. Yes. And that video was really earnest
- 2:59and beautiful. And so I don't want to make fun
- 3:01of it. I hate the Avatar movies so much, and
- 3:04I've seen all of them. Was the Na'vi sign language
- 3:07in the newest one, or was it in the others? It's
- 3:09in the second one, too. I don't believe it's
- 3:11in the first one. I saw the second one years
- 3:14ago. I saw it in theaters. It's the Way of Water,
- 3:16right? Yeah. So they sign to the whales, but
- 3:20then the whales speak back to them. Sure, because
- 3:22whales can't sign. Well, they also can't talk.
- 3:25So, like, I don't know what's going on here.
- 3:27Are the whales deaf in Avatar? No, they're not.
- 3:30That's what is confusing. So I don't really understand
- 3:33why they need it. But it is a full language.
- 3:37Yes, and it was created by a Deaf person, right?
- 3:39Yes, which is very cool. I just hate the movies.
- 3:42They're so corny. And so, like, and I honestly
- 3:44had forgotten how much sign language there is
- 3:47in the second one. And there is a lot in the
- 3:49third one. Did you see the third one? My boyfriend
- 3:52has forced me to watch all of them. And how was
- 3:55the signing? Did it look anything similar to
- 3:57American Sign Language? There was only one sign
- 3:59that I caught that was the same, and it was the
- 4:02sign for fine. Okay. My problem is every time
- 4:05I think of Avatar now, I think of that episode
- 4:07of How to with John Wilson. Did you ever watch
- 4:10it? No. Okay. There's one episode of How to with
- 4:13John Wilson where he goes to an Avatar fan group.
- 4:16And then it's basically like a mental health
- 4:18group for Avatar fans. And they speak Na'vi to
- 4:21each other. And they have all blue cake and blue
- 4:24food. It's awesome. Is this real? Yes. Oh. Anyway,
- 4:28should we get to the show? Yeah, please. The
- 4:43first thing I wrote down about this episode is
- 4:45not the planking. It's upsetting. Well, first
- 4:48of all, this is season one, episode 12, titled
- 4:51the Tempest, and it was released January
- 4:5310th, 2012. So I think this is past planking
- 4:57era. It has to be. Because they filmed it, and
- 5:00then I think by the time it aired, planking was
- 5:02kind of dead. It also was just so cringe to watch.
- 5:05Yeah, Bay and Emmett are doing a planking photo
- 5:09shoot in many places. In many places, including
- 5:12a bus stop that a poor woman is trying to use
- 5:15to sit down. And she can't sit down because Bay
- 5:18and her Mission Hills ass has come down, never
- 5:21taken a bus in her life probably, and is using
- 5:23it to plank. I liked when she planked on the
- 5:26escalator. That was good. That was good. I wanted
- 5:28to know how they did that. I mean, it was probably
- 5:31turned off. It must have been. When they took
- 5:33the picture. But I wonder canonically in the
- 5:36story, was it turned off or did she really? I
- 5:38like to think that her body, very still body,
- 5:41was just like going down the escalator, really,
- 5:44really still. And then Emmett took a picture.
- 5:47Me too. Yeah, and then they're making art and
- 5:49also making out in Emmett's room and Melody storms
- 5:53in. I also just want to say I do have a photo
- 5:56shoot of myself Tebowing from 2012. Sorry, what
- 6:00is Tebowing? Like Tim Tebow, the football player.
- 6:03I was homeschooled in 2012. You're right. Okay,
- 6:06so he would do the thing where he would kneel
- 6:08on the ground. Oh, but isn't that the thinker
- 6:12or whatever? That's under your chin. Tebow would
- 6:15do this. Okay. And so I have a photo shoot. And
- 6:18do you have it on you now for me to view? I think
- 6:21I do. Okay, great. Give me a second, guys. And
- 6:24can we blur your face and put one on the Instagram?
- 6:26I don't think you can see my face, actually.
- 6:28There, there you go. Oh, wow. I'm wearing an
- 6:31Aeropostale long -sleeve shirt, blue skinny jeans,
- 6:35polka dot socks, and I am Tebowing on my family's
- 6:38living room floor. And someone took a picture
- 6:41of me doing this. I don't know who. Thank you
- 6:43for being vulnerable and sharing. It's okay,
- 6:46because you can't see my face, which makes me
- 6:47feel better. Let me get to my notes. That could
- 6:49be anybody Tebowing. Then Bay and Emmett are
- 6:51making out in his room, and Melody walks in on
- 6:54them smooching to confront Emmett for dropping
- 6:57AP Bio. And instead, he wants to take speech
- 7:01therapy. Yeah, it's the only time they offer
- 7:03speech therapy. Bad. I wish I took AP Bio in
- 7:06high school. That's one of my biggest regrets.
- 7:08And Bay is just good enough at signing now to
- 7:11understand that they're talking about her. Yeah,
- 7:13in front of her. In front of her. Melody needs
- 7:16to stop doing that. I know. And then Bay leaves.
- 7:19Bay is like, oops, I'm gonna get out of here.
- 7:22And at the Kennish house, Kathryn is looking
- 7:24smoking hot. We also get a Mad Men reference.
- 7:27Are you still watching Mad Men? A little bit,
- 7:29but I'm on my Dance Moms thing right now. Yeah.
- 7:31Mad Men's not really a comfort show. Well, it
- 7:34kind of is for me, but I'm deeply mentally ill.
- 7:36I just really need to concentrate when I watch
- 7:39it, and I need to be well in the head. Totally.
- 7:41I'm mentally fine, but right now I cannot concentrate
- 7:44on something like that. It's kind of more of
- 7:47a summer show to me anyway. Ooh, I see that.
- 7:50I feel like it's perpetually, like, sweaty there
- 7:52and like hot. That's true they're always sweating
- 7:54in their suits and loosening their ties. Well
- 7:56I don't think air conditioning had been popular.
- 7:58What the 1950s? Yeah. Yeah Kathryn is wearing
- 8:02a nice dress and high heels and an apron in the
- 8:06kitchen. She looks like a 1950s housewife. She
- 8:08looked smoking. She looks very hot. And John thinks
- 8:11so too and he's flirting with her very intensely
- 8:14in front of the children. He says we should bring
- 8:17that the next time we go away. Love the implication
- 8:19that they're not fucking in the house when we
- 8:21know for a fact they are. Right. I just wrote, John.
- 8:24She's just dressed up to go meet Tina Choi from
- 8:27the Kansas City Herald. Yes. Which we'll get to. But now
- 8:29we're at the guest house at Regina's and she's
- 8:32making breakfast for once. For once. We were just
- 8:34talking about this, what will it take for regina
- 8:37to cook for Daphne and turns out what it'll take
- 8:39is her wanting to know the tea. Yeah, it's when
- 8:42your daughter's best friend is dating your biological
- 8:45daughter. That's when she'll make breakfast.
- 8:47And she's like, why didn't you tell me? I think
- 8:50as they're talking, it becomes more clear. Because
- 8:53she's kind of like, Daphne, Emmett's like your
- 8:55only friend. You have no other friends. So you
- 8:58must be really lonely right now. That's kind
- 9:00of what she says. Yeah, and she's right. And
- 9:03she's right. Yeah, poor Daphne. She's not a girl's
- 9:06girl. She's not a girl's girl. She doesn't have
- 9:08a girl space friends. Well, she tries. She's
- 9:11about to try. She's about to try. It's going
- 9:13to go badly. Toby and Wilke are making a music
- 9:15video and they're talking about renting a capybara.
- 9:18Who is behind the marketing of capybaras in the
- 9:22last decade? They were huge in like the early
- 9:242000s. Were they? No, like someone discovered
- 9:27the word capybara and the fact that they were
- 9:29the world's largest rodent. And everyone wanted
- 9:32to see or hear about them. I remember it was
- 9:34in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, too. They
- 9:36mentioned capybaras. Okay, so I thought that
- 9:38capybaras were just coming in now in the mid
- 9:42-2020s, but turns out they're having a resurgence
- 9:44right now. Interesting. That little Labubu knockoff
- 9:48thing that Paolo got me for Christmas is literally
- 9:50dressed up as a capybara. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's
- 9:53that Glen Powell photo that did it. And then
- 9:55Emmett shows up at the Kennish house. In the
- 9:57morning, and Daphne's like, oh my god, deja vu,
- 10:00what are you doing here? But he's not there for
- 10:02Daphne. He said, nice to see you, I'm checking
- 10:04on Bay. We were discussing, it's been a minute,
- 10:07but how the Kennishes were so freaked out about
- 10:09the motorcycle, and then they just kind of let
- 10:11it go. They didn't let it go. They bought Daphne
- 10:14a fucking car. Right. That was their final move.
- 10:17They never bring up the fact that she won't have
- 10:19to ride with Emmett anymore. But it feels like
- 10:22- In Kathryn's mind, she's like, well, if we
- 10:24buy her a car. And it seems like it's a rule.
- 10:27Because Daphne could just hop on the motorcycle
- 10:29and go to school if she wants. Maybe she just
- 10:31feels obligated to use the car now that they've
- 10:33given it to her. So she's like, well, I have
- 10:35to use this ugly Volvo now. It's so ugly. Bay
- 10:38comes out. Yeah, and Daphne flees the scene.
- 10:41Daphne's like, I'll see you both at school. Throwback,
- 10:44she's still doing cooking classes. Yes. She's
- 10:46going to be at Buckner a lot this episode. And
- 10:48Emmett's there to check on Bay after what happened
- 10:51with Melody. He said, yeah, my mom yelled at
- 10:53me because I signed up for speech. And Bay is
- 10:55thrilled to hear that he signed up for speech.
- 10:57She's thrilled about it. On top of the world.
- 10:59And he goes, I don't know why my mom's mad. Which
- 11:02is such a teenage boy thing to say. He definitely
- 11:05knows, too. He knows why she's mad. But he's
- 11:07like, I don't know what her problem is. And then
- 11:09he's like, and by the way, she hates you. She
- 11:12hates you. but who cares? And Bay's like I care.
- 11:15Yeah. I want her like me and then she lists all
- 11:17the reasons why it's important like. She's very
- 11:20tied to Melody it's true. Yeah like it's her biological
- 11:23mom's best friend, she also coaches Daphne's basketball
- 11:26team, it's her boyfriend's mother. Yeah. Like I
- 11:30want her like me she's in my life now. She also
- 11:33Melody should like Bay a little bit more because
- 11:36she has the hots for John Kennish. I know. You're
- 11:39not really helping yourself, Melody. No. We're
- 11:41at Buckner now. And Simone and Daphne start chatting.
- 11:44Yeah, they're palling around. We don't know how
- 11:47they met, but they're chatting. Off screen. Oh,
- 11:49at cooking class. Simone's apparently in the
- 11:51cooking class now. Which we never saw. No. In
- 11:54the previous episode. Well, she didn't exist.
- 11:56She spawned into existence at East West Fest,
- 11:58basically. Maiara Walsh just popped up. But they're
- 12:01walking side by side in a busy, noisy school.
- 12:05And they're not facing each other. Again, Daphne,
- 12:07superpowers. Don't know how she's understanding
- 12:10them. And this comes up later at the club. Once.
- 12:13Acknowledges it once. And I was like, this environment
- 12:15is my worst nightmare. Do we think that Daphne
- 12:18is just lying all the time? Do we think that
- 12:20she's just smiling and nodding? No, because she's
- 12:22having full conversations back at them. She knows
- 12:24what they're saying. Damn. And then they walk
- 12:26up and Bay is there and Simone is like... How's
- 12:29that dog, Mr. Waffles? Bay's like, well, he died
- 12:33last summer. There's not a single photo of Mr.
- 12:35Waffles in the Kennish house. I think they just
- 12:37dropped that line to show that Simone hasn't
- 12:39really been in Bay's life for at least a year.
- 12:42But if you're going to make a fictional dead
- 12:43dog, at least build a backstory for him. Show
- 12:46me a cute dog. Yeah, show me the dog. Rest in
- 12:48peace, Mr. Waffles. Daphne and Simone are becoming
- 12:50buddy buddy. But Daphne is trying to forge a
- 12:54new life for herself. She's like, well, if I
- 12:56can't have Emmett as my BFF, I'll get a new one.
- 12:59I'll get this suspicious girl that everyone keeps
- 13:01side -eyeing. Yeah and then Kathryn is meeting
- 13:04with that journalist and the journalist is like
- 13:06surprise it's a book. I want to write a book about
- 13:08your absolutely horrible horror story life. Yeah
- 13:12the way she's selling it to Kathryn she should
- 13:14have a little bit more tact. Not tactful at
- 13:17all she's like come on let me exploit you please.
- 13:20She's like it's such a good sales pitch like
- 13:22you the hero or like i'm gonna make so much money
- 13:26from this by exploiting you please. And Kathryn
- 13:29rightfully is like bye, I'm leaving. Now Toby and Wilke
- 13:32have resorted to working at the car wash. Which
- 13:34they should have done a while back, but it seems
- 13:36like they mentioned they aren't making a lot
- 13:38of money. Minimum wage back then was, what, like
- 13:40$2 an hour? The only thing I noted was Wilke's
- 13:43muscles are crazy. Comically larger than Toby's.
- 13:47Who looks like that? He looks 30 years old. Yeah,
- 13:51and he was young doing this show. His muscles
- 13:54are bigger than Toby's entire body. I think...
- 13:57Austin Butler had so much early success on, like,
- 13:59teen shows because he had a young -looking face,
- 14:02but the genetics of, yeah, like, a 30 -year -old
- 14:06man. But him at the car wash, he's a foot taller
- 14:09than Toby. Well, they've got different builds.
- 14:11Also, it's so funny because I think Lucas Grabeel's
- 14:13significantly older than him. But they both,
- 14:16yeah, he looks... Like 17. And Daphne is playing
- 14:20pickup basketball with Simone. Yeah, it's b -ball
- 14:23time. I kind of tuned out during this basketball
- 14:25scene because you know I don't care. But if you
- 14:27want to give your review, feel free. Yeah, Daphne
- 14:29goes for a layup and she... pushes Simone to
- 14:33the ground, but in a way that is, I think, fine.
- 14:36And Simone is like, nice job. Want to come to
- 14:38the club with me? You can come, but you need
- 14:40a fake. And Daphne's like, yeah, yeah, no problem.
- 14:43Totally. And then a basketball coach from Buckner
- 14:47approaches her. Wonder what that's about. Melody
- 14:49is on the Kennish property and bumps into Bay while
- 14:53she's holding a giant painting, a little cumbersome
- 14:56to sign with. But she approaches Melody and says,
- 14:59I didn't make Emmett sign up for speech therapy
- 15:01just so you know, like that was all his doing.
- 15:03Which is kind of a lie. That's true she was very
- 15:08happy to hear that he signed up so she is kind
- 15:10of encouraging him. And like their first real
- 15:12day hanging out she did ask him would you ever
- 15:15maybe speak? That is true. And he did tell her
- 15:18no but I don't want to blame Bay for it. I don't
- 15:23want to blame Bay because she is not actively
- 15:25changing his schedule. Bay says, I didn't ask.
- 15:28I didn't ask Emmett to sign up for speech therapy. And Melody
- 15:30voices, you didn't have to. And she's right.
- 15:33She's right, but she's being so mean to Bay.
- 15:35She's being so mean. She's using, she's taking
- 15:39out her feelings about her son on Bay. She's
- 15:42being a boy mom. She's being such a boy mom.
- 15:45You're so right. Oh, man. Melody, come on. You're
- 15:49better than this. I know. Also, in her own home,
- 15:52I just wrote the disrespect that Melody's showing
- 15:54up and still being mean to her there. Yeah. And
- 15:56then she flees to go get her roots done by Regina.
- 15:59And Daphne goes to John and is like, the Buckner
- 16:02coach wants me to play for them. And he gets
- 16:05so serious. So serious. You don't quit your team.
- 16:09But really what I think is he committed to the
- 16:12team by signing up to coach so he could get closer
- 16:15with his daughter. I don't know. I think that's
- 16:18part of it, but John also just, like, loves sports
- 16:21and all that stuff. And he needs an outlet, like
- 16:24Toby says later. Yeah, he does need an outlet.
- 16:26So I don't know, because he continues to stay
- 16:29on and coach. Yeah, I had mixed feelings about
- 16:31this because it'd be different if Daphne's team
- 16:34was, maybe they suck, but they were really dedicated
- 16:37and they wanted to get better. But as you see
- 16:39later on, like, Daphne's team does not give a
- 16:42flying fuck about it. No, yeah, I'm on Daphne's
- 16:44side here. Yeah, and if this is an opportunity.
- 16:47and she wants to play to win, then go for it.
- 16:49So then Emmett decides that the best way to handle
- 16:51the issues between his mom and his girlfriend
- 16:54is to stage a game night. When Bay can still
- 16:57barely sign. Stressful. I don't know about you.
- 17:00I'm a competitive person. You're a competitive
- 17:02person. I would not play board games with someone
- 17:05I didn't already have a steady relationship with.
- 17:08Yeah. I just don't see it going well. I also
- 17:11think Melody's a competitive person. Yeah. Also,
- 17:14spoiler, they play Monopoly, which is like -
- 17:16The worst game. The worst game if you're trying
- 17:18to form friendships, not ruin them. It's a long,
- 17:22boring game. It's hard to sign. And it usually
- 17:25ends in someone crying. That's true. Every time
- 17:28I played with my cousins growing up, someone
- 17:29cried. I think I've learned about myself that
- 17:32I'm not very competitive at board games. I think
- 17:35one thing about me is I'm not that good at board
- 17:37games. And I'm learning this about myself, especially
- 17:40being married to someone who really likes board
- 17:42games. I lose constantly. I played Catan the
- 17:46entire break. I did not win one game. Wow. I've
- 17:49never actually played Catan. Anyway, yeah. So
- 17:51they're going to play board games and that's
- 17:54going to go badly. Yeah. As we know. And then
- 17:57Daphne shows up again at Buckner. For like the
- 18:00second time. Oh, it's not cooking class day.
- 18:02She just shows up. Yeah, she just shows up to
- 18:04be like, Wilke will know where I can get a fake
- 18:06ID. And then he goes, let me think. Oh, wait.
- 18:09Cha ching. I have a great idea. I will be making
- 18:12them myself. Is that? I feel like they're not
- 18:15easy to make. I don't think they're easy to make
- 18:17either. I wouldn't know anything about it because
- 18:20it's illegal. Yeah, I would never do something
- 18:22like that. Never had any experience with something
- 18:24like that. But. They literally just like order
- 18:27a bunch of cardstock and then later they go on
- 18:29YouTube. Like him and Toby go on YouTube and
- 18:32there's YouTube videos on how to make them. I
- 18:34feel like it's a little more complicated than
- 18:36that. You would think. Also, you need to take
- 18:38like a very specific photo. I've heard. I've
- 18:41heard. Allegedly, you need to take a photo that
- 18:43looks like an ID photo. He doesn't ask Daphne
- 18:45for that. That's true. Where'd they get a picture
- 18:47of her? And then also, it needs to scan. Don't
- 18:51they scan them? Yes. Maybe back then. I was going
- 18:54to say, is that new technology? That might be
- 18:56new, because now they scan them. Maybe Kansas
- 18:58City isn't. But yeah, maybe back then, they just
- 19:01looked at it. But she wants to go to a bar, not
- 19:03a liquor store. Right, they're just going to
- 19:04glance at it. Yeah, so Wilke's like, great,
- 19:07this is how I'm going to pay for our capybara.
- 19:10How much is a capybara, do you think? Well, they're
- 19:13renting it. They said $400. Oh, and you knew
- 19:15the price. You definitely can't purchase one.
- 19:17Good. Although I guess the person they're renting
- 19:19it from technically purchased it. Well, maybe
- 19:22they have them in, like, a nice, respectable
- 19:24place. That's such a nice thought. Like an animal
- 19:27sanctuary for capybaras. Okay. I don't think
- 19:29that's where it's coming from. All right. It's
- 19:32interesting how, in this episode, there's, like,
- 19:35a callback kind of to the pilot episode where
- 19:38Bay gets in trouble for having a fake ID and
- 19:41using it to try to buy beer. And they're so upset
- 19:44with her. And then here's Daphne, who at the
- 19:46time was positioned as like this sunny, wholesome
- 19:49alternative to Bay. And she's doing much worse.
- 19:52And she's literally like very casually, I would
- 19:55like a fake ID. And she drags her brother into
- 19:58this illegal activity. And she hears about her
- 20:01brother and Wilke making them. She's like, great,
- 20:04that's amazing. Love it. And Bay goes, you guys
- 20:06are the stupidest people alive. Yeah, she's not
- 20:10getting involved. And she comes to Kathryn
- 20:12for advice about how to make Melody like her.
- 20:16And that's when it's revealed that literally
- 20:18none of the Kennishes know that she's dating Emmett.
- 20:22Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Does it? It's
- 20:25never come up. The Kennishes are like 80s parents.
- 20:27Like, where do they think their children are
- 20:29all the time? Yeah, you're right. I have no idea.
- 20:32Did they think Bay's just like out by herself?
- 20:34Because she is with Emmett all the time. They're
- 20:36doing a planking photo shoot. They're fully dating.
- 20:39Regina already knows. Regina wouldn't have mentioned
- 20:41it to Kathryn? Toby knows. Yeah, I don't know.
- 20:44Anytime I was dating someone in high school,
- 20:46I was fully like... And here is my new boyfriend.
- 20:50Oh, I kept that to myself. Oh, okay. Kathryn
- 20:53maybe should have, like, picked up hints. But
- 20:55from her reaction, she's genuinely surprised.
- 20:58Yeah. And she's like, you and Emmett? Deaf? You?
- 21:02Hearing? Which she doesn't actually bring it
- 21:04up. That's not why she's surprised. She's like...
- 21:06Well, I thought that was Daphne's boyfriend.
- 21:08Everyone just fucking thinks that Emmett's Daphne's
- 21:10boyfriend. I know. And Bay's like for the love
- 21:13of God. Can someone imagine us being compatible?
- 21:16I know. Kathryn's supportive. And Bay asks
- 21:19for some advice. And Kathryn says, just be
- 21:21yourself. But also. Well, Bay says, I don't want
- 21:24to be myself. I want to be you. Yeah. Which is
- 21:27really sweet. And then Kathryn's like, well,
- 21:31be less sarcastic and bring artichoke dip then,
- 21:33which is a great tip, I think. Great tip. You
- 21:35should always bring something to someone hosting.
- 21:38An artichoke dip is very yummy. And then Daphne
- 21:41comes in to see Toby in the music room. Yes,
- 21:44and Toby is signing. He says, now that I'm learning
- 21:48sign, I realize hearing people use too many words.
- 21:51Love that realization. Yeah, he's right. Hearing
- 21:54people. English? Too many words. And then she's
- 21:58like, can I please quit my basketball team? And
- 22:01Toby's like, no, he'll be so sad. We learn a
- 22:04little bit more that Toby used to play baseball
- 22:07because you know John's whole passion and career
- 22:10was baseball. Right. And Toby quit to pursue music.
- 22:13Yeah. And she was like how he react and he said
- 22:15not great and neither Bay nor I are big sports
- 22:19people so he's using you as his love of sports
- 22:22outlet. Because she does, she loves sports it's
- 22:25just that her team is shit. Like it's not a rejection
- 22:28of John. If anything she's like I could be good
- 22:31enough at this to play for real. Yeah. And also,
- 22:35I should be supportive. I like to think that
- 22:37John has encouraged her to grow and improve at
- 22:40the sport now that she is getting pursued by
- 22:43Buckner. Yeah. So I think that's a big deal.
- 22:45I think she should reframe it like that. Like,
- 22:47you have trained me and helped me improve so
- 22:50much that this fancy private school wants me
- 22:52to play for them. Do you remember how the Buckner
- 22:54thing resolves? Okay. But we don't know that
- 22:56yet. But we don't know that yet. But then Regina
- 22:58in the very next scene is like, girl do whatever
- 23:00you want. Quit the team. Daphne goes upstairs
- 23:03and she's like, please, can I quit the basketball?
- 23:05Like, she's just waiting for someone to give
- 23:07her their blessing. Simcom alert. Major Simcom
- 23:11alert. Just the two of them in that kitchen.
- 23:14But yeah, Regina's like, I don't care what
- 23:15you do. Quit the team. Like, whatever. And then
- 23:18Kathryn, back at the house, she's stressed
- 23:21about the book. She's like, I'm really worried
- 23:23that they're going to move forward with this
- 23:25book. And John is like, well, do you want me
- 23:27to call her? She said, I called the lawyer and
- 23:29the lawyer said there's nothing I can do. Right,
- 23:31they're allowed to write a... biography about
- 23:33the family. Yeah if they want which is fucked
- 23:36up. And then John's like well what if I call the
- 23:38journalist and like see if I could talk to her.
- 23:40And she's like what are you gonna learn that I didn't
- 23:42already learn? I understand why Kathryn's touchy
- 23:46about the fact that he does that but I think
- 23:48it's really sexy that he's like I'll handle it.
- 23:51Like, that's nice to be like, you are clearly
- 23:53stressed about this. Let me just see if I can
- 23:55go be the bad guy and scare her off. This is
- 23:58also a running theme from the last episode. I
- 24:00know. Where she needs to speak up more for herself.
- 24:02I know. And she's trying to do that and not get
- 24:03railroaded. Not get railroaded. I'd let John
- 24:06railroad me. That's all I'm saying. And then
- 24:09the fake ID is done. That was really fast. Allegedly,
- 24:13I've heard that it takes longer. Allegedly. I've
- 24:15heard it takes like two to eight weeks. Yeah.
- 24:18Allegedly. Allegedly, you have to order them
- 24:20way in advance. Wilke likes her enough that
- 24:23she, I don't think, pays anything. No, I think
- 24:25she gets it for free. But he says earlier it's
- 24:29going to cost a pretty penny. And Daphne's like,
- 24:31that's fine. Maybe they just exchange money off
- 24:33screen. Yeah, we didn't see that. But he's quizzing
- 24:36Daphne. He goes, what's your star sign? She goes,
- 24:38Libra. And he goes, eh, wrong. Now your sign
- 24:41is Cancer. You were born June 24th. Daphne has
- 24:44a new name on the ID, Daphne Rabinsky from Pleasantville,
- 24:48New York. Interesting. Interesting. And she is
- 24:52a Cancer on the ID. Rabinsky. Yeah, she's Jewish?
- 24:56That doesn't really, she doesn't look like a
- 24:58Rabinsky. No, she does not. But you know what?
- 25:00She also didn't look Puerto Rican. And no one
- 25:03questioned that for the first 16 years of her
- 25:05life. You're right, you're right. Whatever. And
- 25:07she tells Wilke she's going to go to the club
- 25:10with Simone. So yes, thank you for the ID.
- 25:12And Bay hears about that and she warns Daphne
- 25:15about... Yeah, she tries to pull her aside and
- 25:17do a little, hey, girly. And Daphne immediately
- 25:20goes... What? Daphne gets so mean. Self -defense
- 25:24walls, high alert, way up on the wall. And then
- 25:28Bay goes, you know what? Never mind. Not my problem.
- 25:31I love that they're both wearing hair clips in
- 25:33this scene. Bay's look good. Daphne's look bad.
- 25:35Bay had like a cute brown top and a long skirt
- 25:38on. Yeah, I actually liked most of Bay's outfits
- 25:40in this episode. And she had a clip. But then
- 25:42Daphne had this bright blue cardigan on and these
- 25:46two little blue ball clips. How would you describe
- 25:50those? They evoke space buns, but they themselves
- 25:54are not space buns. Yeah, her hair is still down.
- 25:56Little mouse ears, almost, in her hair. It looks
- 25:59insane because everyone at the club is wearing
- 26:01normal bar clothes. And she's wearing a bright
- 26:06blue top. Over a loose cheetah print long tank
- 26:10top that is layered over another purple tank
- 26:15top. It's so ugly. It's an awful outfit. She
- 26:18also looks like she's 14. She looks insane. And
- 26:22she's like, let me just go make out with this
- 26:24man at the bar. And I'm surprised they're not like
- 26:26are you 12. Yeah, I can't believe she gets in fine
- 26:29despite looking like a toddler in her outfit.
- 26:32And Wilke shows up to the bar uninvited. And
- 26:36she's like, what the hell? And he's like, well,
- 26:38you told me where you were going to be and what
- 26:40time and who you would be with. I thought I was
- 26:42being invited. Which he definitely wasn't. He's
- 26:44being pushy. He's being pushy. But he's so cute
- 26:47with it. But she's like, whoa, I do not like
- 26:50you like that. Yeah, she says, you're not my
- 26:52type. And he goes, I'm sorry. Were we not just
- 26:55making out in my car like last week? Literally.
- 26:58And then he says, what? I'm not deaf and into
- 27:00Bay. Good one, Wilke. Also, his feelings are
- 27:04really hurt. He is. He's like kind of tearing
- 27:07up a little. I know. I felt so bad. I felt so
- 27:09bad for him. And we learned that Wilke used
- 27:12to date Simone. For like a second. For like a
- 27:14second. But it's like, yeah, Wilke's kind of
- 27:16a slut. That's okay. He likes Daphne for real.
- 27:19And then also, how the hell is she hearing everyone?
- 27:23It is dark. It is noisy. It is filled with people.
- 27:27She's also hanging out with mostly people she's
- 27:30not familiar with. Yeah, there's Simone and then
- 27:32like three girls that we never met before. And
- 27:35she does say at one point, so they're doing like
- 27:38makeout challenges in the bar, I guess. Like
- 27:42later on, we come back to the bar and they're
- 27:44daring each other to go kiss strangers, which
- 27:46if you are underage in a bar, I don't want to
- 27:49give anyone advice, but like don't make a fucking
- 27:51spectacle of yourself. Don't do that. You need
- 27:54to look like you have been in a bar or just in
- 27:57public before. They're like giggling. They're
- 28:00like running around the bar being loud. And then,
- 28:03yeah, Daphne's at this table with all these girls.
- 28:05And one of them's like, don't make Daphne do
- 28:08that. She's not on the team. So these are all
- 28:10the Buckner basketball girls. These would be
- 28:11her teammates if she were to switch teams. And
- 28:14Daphne's like, wait, what did you say? It's kind
- 28:16of dark in here. First time she asks, what? And
- 28:19Simone says, you don't have to do the dare. Daphne
- 28:22says, oh, I'm doing the dare. I'm doing the dare.
- 28:24And then Simone points to some random guy at
- 28:27the bar and says, go make out with him. He also
- 28:29looks crazy young. He looks like he's in college,
- 28:31like a freshman in college. Yeah, maybe. And
- 28:34she goes up to him and says, my friends dared
- 28:37me make out with you. How do you feel about that?
- 28:39And he was like, hell yeah. They make out. And
- 28:41then all of a sudden his girlfriend comes back
- 28:43from the bathroom. What an idiot. Why would he
- 28:45say yes? I don't know. That was crazy. And she
- 28:49is about to beat up Daphne. Yeah. And Simone runs
- 28:52up and says, excuse me, my friend's colostomy
- 28:55bag is about to explode. We have to go. She's
- 28:57ableist and she dines and dashes. Literally,
- 29:00it was like, what the fuck? I know that was supposed
- 29:03to be funny, but I think now maybe I'm being
- 29:05sensitive, but I was like, that's not funny.
- 29:07That's true. I think back then. I don't think
- 29:09I even knew what a colostomy bag was. And Daphne
- 29:12thinks it's funny. Yeah, she was like, oh, my
- 29:13God, a colostomy bag? Yeah, somehow understood
- 29:16her. Yeah. Wasn't even facing her, really, when
- 29:19Simone said it. She was like, did you say I had
- 29:21a colostomy bag? That's hilarious. Oh, my God.
- 29:24No, yeah. And then, yeah, Simone stays behind
- 29:27to, quote, pay. Yeah, Simone's like, don't worry,
- 29:30I got the drinks. I'll pay. And then she does
- 29:32not pay. No, she rips up the check and puts it
- 29:34in her pocket. And that's. Okay. Should we, do we want
- 29:38to go to game night? Yeah let's go to game night.
- 29:40They're playing Monopoly. I think they should
- 29:42have played, I think a great game to play if there's
- 29:45a language barrier is Uno. Uno is really good.
- 29:47Sure. I used to play that with a lot of kids who
- 29:49didn't speak English. Rummikub is also really
- 29:51good. Dominoes is also good. Dominoes is really
- 29:54good, so those are much better options than Monopoly.
- 29:57Bay shows up at game night and they are. Oh, she
- 30:02has her artichoke dip. Yeah, she brings her big
- 30:04artichoke dip that's like super saran wrapped
- 30:07and it never gets opened. There's food on the
- 30:10kitchen table already, but Melody instead brings
- 30:12it to the other side of the kitchen onto the
- 30:14counter and then walks away. Yeah. Regina comes
- 30:18over and she says to Regina, like, don't interpret
- 30:20for me tonight. I want Melody to see that I'm
- 30:23trying. Bad call, girly. Bad call. She really
- 30:25tried, though. And Regina really did try to help.
- 30:28Yeah. There was one point where Emmett, like, put
- 30:30a house on Park Place, and Bay can't tell. And
- 30:33then Regina's like, Park Place is a great property.
- 30:37I know. She's trying. Yeah, she's trying to help
- 30:40her, but Melody is not trying to help her. She's
- 30:43signing so fast. And smiling that smile where
- 30:47you know she knows she's being a bitch. Oh, yeah.
- 30:50And then she... There's also no captions, too,
- 30:53so the audience does not know what you're saying.
- 30:55Which I loved. Yes, and also her signing's out
- 30:58of frame. We see her signing really fast, and
- 31:00then we just see Regina laughing at some story
- 31:03she's sharing. I loved that I was like, oh, I'm
- 31:06an idiot, too. I feel for Bay. And then Emmett
- 31:09realizes that... Bay is clueless. And Bay says,
- 31:12I missed all of that. I'm so sorry. And then
- 31:14Regina and Emmett tell Melody, please slow down.
- 31:17And Emmett signs the simplified version, which
- 31:20is just, my mom likes to win. Yes. And Bay's
- 31:24like, oh, I like to win too, which is funny because
- 31:27they're also, they're talking about the game,
- 31:29but also they're not. And then I don't know why
- 31:32Melody brings up Daphne. She says Daphne is the
- 31:35only person that's ever beat me in Monopoly.
- 31:37That's right. And then everyone gets kind of
- 31:39chill, the room chills. Yeah. And she's like,
- 31:41what? Emmett gives her evil eyes. Yeah. She's
- 31:44like, what? I can't bring up Daphne? And then
- 31:46Bay says it's okay, I know you and Daphne hang
- 31:49out a lot, and she signs hang out. But instead
- 31:52of hang out, she accidentally signs circumcise.
- 31:56So I'll demonstrate the signs. So hang out is
- 31:58you have both hands and your thumbs are up, and
- 32:02the thumbs are orbiting each other. Yeah, kind
- 32:05of at an angle, too. At an angle, and then they're
- 32:08going around each other. But for circumcise,
- 32:10only one hand is moving, and it looks like you're
- 32:13cutting off foreskin. Yeah. It's, yeah, you're
- 32:16sort of miming a circumcision. But Melody starts
- 32:18cackling, laughing at her face in a really mean
- 32:22way. It's so mean. Like, she obviously knows
- 32:25Bay didn't mean circumcise. No, of course not.
- 32:28Also, the signs are fairly similar. They're very
- 32:31similar. A new signer. And then Bay's like, you
- 32:34know what? I'm done. Good night. Bye. Especially
- 32:38because she, like, it's not just that she laughs.
- 32:40She laughs and she's like, what did I do? And
- 32:43Regina explains that you signed. And Regina does
- 32:46a really good job of being like, oh, you didn't
- 32:48sign hangout. You signed circumcision. Yeah,
- 32:51but that's okay. Yeah, she's like, there's no
- 32:53mockery in her tone. She's just explaining very
- 32:55frankly. And Bay's like, oh. But then Melody
- 32:56goes on. Melody continues on like, yeah, me and
- 32:59Daphne, we circumcise all the time. Like, blah,
- 33:02blah, blah. And then Bay goes, you're laughing
- 33:05at me. Yeah. That broke my heart. Yeah, it's,
- 33:09you know, she's really far out of her comfort
- 33:11zone. I know. And then she's like, you know what?
- 33:13I'm done. Good for Bay that she walks out. I
- 33:16think that was the right call. And then Regina
- 33:17finally says something, too. Yeah, she was like,
- 33:20you need to apologize. That's my daughter. And
- 33:23that's your son's girlfriend. Like, what is wrong
- 33:26with you? What are you doing? Yeah. But then
- 33:28on the drive home, like, it makes me sad that
- 33:32Regina's defending Bay when she's not in the
- 33:34room. But then on the drive home, she's, like,
- 33:36defending Melody. She's like, I don't know why
- 33:38she's being like this. She's such a mama bear.
- 33:41Yeah, she's being a mama bear. Like, it's not
- 33:43about you. It is definitely about Bay. It's
- 33:47definitely about Bay. And also it's not an excuse.
- 33:49Like she's making excuses for Melody and Bay
- 33:51says, have you ever noticed that there's always
- 33:53someone between us? I like also that Bay got
- 33:56a little petty and said, she's a total bitch.
- 33:58Yeah. Drop bitch on the show. I was so thrilled.
- 34:01Good for her. She deserves to. Yeah. Melody deserved
- 34:04that. And then Emmett's back in his room and
- 34:07there's sad music playing. He's not playing it,
- 34:10but the show has inserted sad music as he stares
- 34:13at photos of his girlfriend planking. I know. Like she
- 34:17died. Can you imagine her and Regina die in the
- 34:20car crash and the photos he has to use in the
- 34:22memorial? Awful. It's the junkyard photos and
- 34:25planking. And planking. And everyone would say,
- 34:28wow, that escalator one is really impressive.
- 34:30It's really good, guys. But Melody comes in.
- 34:33She doesn't apologize. No. She does not say I'm sorry.
- 34:36She says, I know you're mad at me. She says,
- 34:38I know you're mad. Which is crazy. No I'm sorry
- 34:41for my behavior. But then they have a great fight.
- 34:43Yeah. I love an ASL fight. Really a favorite.
- 34:47You want to break it down for us? Yeah, he accuses
- 34:50Melody of blaming Bay for everything that he's
- 34:53doing when he in fact is just changing as a person.
- 34:56I don't know if that's not necessarily true,
- 34:58but that's what he's saying. And he says it's
- 35:00insulting to me, which I think is a good point.
- 35:02It's like it's insulting to me that you think
- 35:04that I can't think for myself. Yeah, that I'm
- 35:07being influenced by this girl instead of... by
- 35:10my own will. And he says, I want to learn speech
- 35:12therapy because I have wanted to learn since I was
- 35:14a kid. And Melody drops a little deaf history
- 35:17on us and says, well, I had to learn speech therapy
- 35:20by force. They used to tie our hands behind our
- 35:22back and punished us if we signed. Yeah. And he
- 35:25says, that was years ago. Things are different
- 35:27now. I want to learn to speak. And he says, and
- 35:30it's not going to prevent me from signing. I
- 35:32can do both, which is very true. And then he
- 35:35accuses her of not wanting him to be happy because
- 35:38he's dating someone, his dad is dating someone,
- 35:41and she's single. So she's taking it out on him.
- 35:44Ouch. Ouch. But they come to tentative agreement
- 35:47where she does promise to apologize and be nicer
- 35:50to Bay. Yeah. And they have a little hug and
- 35:53it's sweet. She doesn't apologize to Emmett. No.
- 35:55But she says, I will apologize to Bay. And she
- 35:58says, if you can stop lying to me and skipping
- 36:02class and failing things, I will be more supportive
- 36:05of your relationship. That's true. It's a little
- 36:07hard to be supportive of a partner when your
- 36:10child is lying, stealing, getting injured. A
- 36:15little tough. Tough, but fair. I think that's
- 36:18a good resolution. I think Emmett has a great...
- 36:21brooding face. Yeah and then Daphne who I presume
- 36:25is a little bit tipsy from her bar experience.
- 36:27They had a lot of beers on the table. And that's
- 36:30why she has the liquid courage to go to John
- 36:32and say she's gonna quit the team. And he goes
- 36:35no you're not and she goes in fact I am. And then,
- 36:39this makes sense to me. She was like, please,
- 36:41for the love of God, I have no control over anything
- 36:43in my life. This is the one thing I can control.
- 36:46Yeah. And I totally agree with her. She said,
- 36:48there's so many things I can't change, but this
- 36:50one I can change and I'm going to do it. Yeah.
- 36:52And I think he acquiesces. Yeah. I think maybe
- 36:56he understands. Yeah. She's saying, I can change
- 37:00this, but you can't. This is in my control. It's
- 37:03not in your control. Kathryn is being like,
- 37:05all these other dummies wrote a book. Yeah, she's
- 37:08like Snooki wrote a book, Valerie Bertinelli wrote
- 37:10a book, Keith Richards has a biography or a memoir.
- 37:13Why can't I write one? She also really insults
- 37:16Kendra. I don't know her last name. I don't know
- 37:18who Kendra is. She's like a former Playboy bunny.
- 37:22Oh, that's right. She's like, Kendra wrote two
- 37:24books. Okay. Okay, Kathryn. Yeah. You can have
- 37:28sex and write. Which Kathryn should know because
- 37:30her and her husband have a very healthy sex life.
- 37:32Yes. She's like, they can all do it. So can I.
- 37:36Yeah, which I actually think is a great idea.
- 37:38Yeah, for her, especially she's been looking
- 37:40for something. Yeah, she drops all the books
- 37:42on John, which she bought. It doesn't look like
- 37:45they're library rentals. Guys, go to your local
- 37:47library. Kathryn doesn't have a library card.
- 37:49Don't go to Barnes and Noble. Go to your local
- 37:51library or your local independent bookstore.
- 37:53So true. I like to think Kathryn maybe went
- 37:56to a local KC independent bookstore, but I fear
- 37:58that she went to Borders at the time or Barnes
- 38:01and Noble. Yeah. And then we get to the last scene
- 38:04where I just wrote, oh, fuck. So Emmett is in
- 38:07the garage. It's nighttime. He's working on his
- 38:09bike. There's no sound. Yeah, it's fully silent.
- 38:12Fully silent. A squad car pulls up onto the driveway
- 38:15and the police shine a light at him so he cannot
- 38:18see who's speaking and he also cannot read their
- 38:20lips. And he tries to sign, but he also has a
- 38:23wrench in his hand. The police, I assume, are
- 38:26probably saying, drop the weapon. And Emmett
- 38:28keeps pointing to his ear, but with the hand
- 38:30that's holding the wrench too. Yeah, so he's
- 38:32like, I don't know what you're saying. But then
- 38:34the police are like, you're not dropping the
- 38:36weapon, okay. And they tackle him, shove him
- 38:39to the ground and handcuff him. Behind his back.
- 38:42Behind his back. Yeah and that's where the episode
- 38:45ends. Yeah so he's being arrested for something,
- 38:47we don't really know what. We'll figure it out
- 38:50very quickly and be reminded what he did. Yeah
- 38:53um extremely upsetting scene to watch. So upsetting.
- 38:56Yeah. Really powerful that they had it completely
- 38:59silent. Yes, I do have issues with the way they
- 39:03talk about it later on in the show. Okay. Because
- 39:06I don't think they talk, because this happens
- 39:08to Emmett, but I don't think they discuss, like,
- 39:10the systemic issues of, like, police brutality
- 39:12against deaf people. I think it's kind of like,
- 39:15oh, he got arrested because he's a bad boy and
- 39:17he's doing bad things. Yeah. But it's not like,
- 39:19I don't think they're really addressing the extremely
- 39:22traumatic thing that has happened to him and
- 39:24that has happened to many deaf people. It's a
- 39:26very common occurrence. Yeah, I looked it up
- 39:31and they don't have a lot of statistics because
- 39:33the tracking is bad, but. Deaf and hard of hearing
- 39:35individuals make up 7 percent of prisoners and only
- 39:382.1 percent of the general population. Oof. So. Overrepresented.
- 39:43Yeah. And then I was also reading specifically
- 39:45about Gallaudet Police Department had a lot of
- 39:49false arrest and history of police brutality.
- 39:52And there was a student there who was killed
- 39:55by campus security in an illegal chokehold in
- 39:581990. Holy shit. Yeah. He was just walking on
- 40:01campus. His name was Carl Dupree. By campus security?
- 40:05Those aren't even real cops. That's what it said
- 40:07in the Washington Post article. Why would? Because
- 40:11isn't Gallaudet a fully deaf university? Yes,
- 40:13but famously the administration is not. And then
- 40:16also the police are not adequately trained on
- 40:19how to interact with deaf people, which is psychotic.
- 40:22People are so stupid. They really are. But apparently
- 40:25this is a running theme with Gallaudet police
- 40:28and then with general police handling deaf and
- 40:32hard of hearing people. I do know that it is a
- 40:34common occurrence for police to mistake sign
- 40:38language for gang signs. Yes. Which again like
- 40:41how dumb can you be. I know it's. It was a fun
- 40:44episode, but then it ended on such a bummer.
- 40:46And I was like, ugh. I know. Sorry, guys. Yeah,
- 40:49I don't know how I bring that up. It's not funny.
- 40:51So I'm not going to try to bring up the mood.
- 40:53But thank you for listening. I really appreciate
- 40:55it. Thanks for listening. And we'll see you next
- 40:58week for episode 13. Bye. Bye.
