- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to gave from one full episode
- 0:37Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard to dig into
- 0:40Speaker 1: the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to confront
- 0:43Speaker 1: the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're talking about the criminal enterprises that have infiltrated music culture,
- 0:50Speaker 1: digging into the music that you vibe on when you
- 0:52Speaker 1: are recreating, Rewinding back from the Nitrous Mafia to the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Italian Mafia with Tommy James and the Schondell previewing next
- 1:01Speaker 1: week's episode on Doctor John and we get into your voicemails, text, dms,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of Rosie. This is
- 1:07Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:11Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:13Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgrace Slanders, where I tell the stories
- 1:16Speaker 1: they didn't want told the kind you'll end up telling
- 1:18Speaker 1: someone else. All right, disco's let's get into it. Recently,
- 1:31Speaker 1: the so called Nitrous Mafia was linked to a murder
- 1:34Speaker 1: outside of twenty twenty five Fish concert in Virginia. Historically,
- 1:39Speaker 1: throughout the history of popular music, the Italian Mafia has
- 1:43Speaker 1: been linked to numerous crimes paola, extortion, racketeering, and of course,
- 1:47Speaker 1: even murder. Other criminal enterprises, violent Jamaican kingpins, illegal drug chemists,
- 1:54Speaker 1: South Boston ticket scalpers, and do it yourself commie bootleg
- 1:58Speaker 1: artists have all left significant marks on music culture. But
- 2:02Speaker 1: why why have criminals so strongly impacted the world of music?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Italian mafioso, nitrous oxide peddlers, Jamaican sound system gangs, Soviet bootleggers,
- 2:15Speaker 1: ticket scalping syndicate, psychedelic chemists, and the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.
- 2:19Speaker 1: All of these criminal enterprises successfully infiltrated, in undoubtedly impacted
- 2:26Speaker 1: music culture. From the earliest days of recorded music up
- 2:30Speaker 1: through the nineteen eighties, the Italian Mafia's influence on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: music industry could be felt everywhere. Mobsters determined which songs
- 2:37Speaker 1: got played on the radio through paola, the act of
- 2:40Speaker 1: bribing DJs and programmers to spin specific records. Wise guys
- 2:44Speaker 1: used muscle and extortion to build and control a lucrative
- 2:49Speaker 1: network of jukebox operators whose machines helped popularize records that
- 2:54Speaker 1: mafia connected executives profited off of. See our next rewind
- 2:58Speaker 1: subject Tommy James as Exhibit A, and Chuck Berry, Frankie Valley,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and basically the entire MCA artists roster in the nineteen
- 3:06Speaker 1: seventies as exhibits B, C and D respectively. In fact,
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Chicago mobs influence on MCA records was so strong
- 3:16Speaker 1: in the nineteen seventies that Rolling Stone magazine claimed MCA
- 3:20Speaker 1: stood for mafia controlled artists, the so called nitrous mafia,
- 3:26Speaker 1: the balloon people who infiltrated the docile community of fish fans,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the ones we cover in this week's full episode of
- 3:32Speaker 1: Disgraceland continue to run their own extortion rackets, wage turf wars,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and enforce a code of silence straight out of a
- 3:40Speaker 1: Scorsese film. Recently, like I said, the group was linked
- 3:44Speaker 1: to a murder outside of a twenty twenty five fish
- 3:46Speaker 1: concert in Virginia back in the nineteen fifties, and up
- 3:50Speaker 1: through the nineteen seventies in Jamaica, sound systems essentially street
- 3:55Speaker 1: parties powered by giant pa systems. These massive amounts of
- 4:00Speaker 1: speakers and cables and turntables and amplifiers were the engines
- 4:04Speaker 1: that ran the Jamaican music scene. Sound systems, both the
- 4:09Speaker 1: parties and the literal equipment were big business. Without Jamaican
- 4:14Speaker 1: sound systems, the Jamaican music economy wouldn't have been possible.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Many Jamaicans relied on music to put food on the table,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and thus relied on powerful sound systems. Sound system operators.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Jamaican legends like Duke Read and ex cop turned enforcer
- 4:31Speaker 1: and Cox and Dodd, a one time cricket prodigy, hired
- 4:35Speaker 1: the original Rude Boys violent street tufts to protect their
- 4:39Speaker 1: sound systems and to even sabotage sound systems operated by
- 4:44Speaker 1: rival music promoters. Violent tussles over turf and stolen equipment
- 4:49Speaker 1: were common, as were shootouts when rival crews tried hijacking dances,
- 4:53Speaker 1: most infamously when gunmen raided a Duke Greed party in Kingston,
- 4:58Speaker 1: leaving several wounded. Criminally minded sound system operators in Rude
- 5:03Speaker 1: Boys created the foundation for SKA and reggae music distribution
- 5:07Speaker 1: and promotion. Without them, there would be no reggae, quantifiably
- 5:12Speaker 1: one of the most listened to styles of music on
- 5:15Speaker 1: the planet. Ticket scalping syndicates from the SEALTI dude outside
- 5:20Speaker 1: the garden trying to get you to bite on floor
- 5:22Speaker 1: seats for aerosmith back in the day to modern bought
- 5:25Speaker 1: firms that buy up thousands of tickets the instant they
- 5:28Speaker 1: go on sale and flip them at ten times the
- 5:30Speaker 1: price to line the pockets of gangster resellers and corporate
- 5:33Speaker 1: ticket brokers. These corrupt agents and practices are so rampant
- 5:39Speaker 1: that we as consumers, have largely just accepted them. The
- 5:44Speaker 1: simple act of buying a concert ticket is proof of
- 5:48Speaker 1: music culture crime hiding in plain sight. This example here
- 5:52Speaker 1: might be the craziest. Back in the day, in Soviet Russia,
- 5:56Speaker 1: independent minded music lovers known as excuse the pronunciation here
- 6:00Speaker 1: runty Net pressed their own bootleg rock records albums by
- 6:05Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley onto discarded
- 6:09Speaker 1: X ray film X rays with images of ribs, skulls,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and spines, and they then cut those X rays into
- 6:17Speaker 1: seven inch discs, burned holes into the center of the
- 6:21Speaker 1: discs with cigarette butts and used specifically made DIY machines
- 6:25Speaker 1: to cut grooves into the discs at seventy eight revolutions
- 6:28Speaker 1: per minute. Also, they could hear and profit off of
- 6:32Speaker 1: band music. Half a world away in the United States,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a California commune turned LSD cartel,
- 6:41Speaker 1: funded a near psychedelic revolution through smuggling, counterfeiting in large
- 6:46Speaker 1: scale acid production. The Brotherhood of Love supplied drugs for
- 6:50Speaker 1: the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Hendrix, and countless other artists who
- 6:54Speaker 1: cemented the hippie dream counterculture ethos with the baby Boomer generation,
- 6:59Speaker 1: most economically consequential generation in American history. But why why
- 7:06Speaker 1: do criminal enterprises like the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, or
- 7:10Speaker 1: the Nitrous Mafia, the Italian Mafia and others? Why do
- 7:13Speaker 1: they so frequently infiltrate and ultimately influence music culture? Because
- 7:18Speaker 1: every culture that promises freedom ends up breeding its own outlaws.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Musicians and criminals operate from the same playbook defiance, risk, charisma,
- 7:31Speaker 1: self invention, and control outside the system. This playbook created
- 7:37Speaker 1: a playing field ripe for corruption. After all, outlaws like
- 7:43Speaker 1: musicians chase the same thing freedom on their own terms.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I'll be back with your voicemails, texts and more right
- 7:53Speaker 1: after this. All right, so we are back here in
- 8:16Speaker 1: the music and True crime saddle, as they say, or
- 8:20Speaker 1: at least as I say, And you know, before I
- 8:23Speaker 1: get too far into last week's question of the week
- 8:25Speaker 1: and your answers, your voicemails, your text you know, in
- 8:28Speaker 1: that past b block, we stumbled upon something that I
- 8:31Speaker 1: found to be very interesting, something I kind of knew
- 8:33Speaker 1: about it, and it was the Jamaican sound system operator
- 8:37Speaker 1: history and all the violence and crime that's connected to
- 8:41Speaker 1: that history. And we talk about some of this, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: in the episodes that we've produced on Jamaican artists like
- 8:48Speaker 1: Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, we haven't really driven hard
- 8:53Speaker 1: into the paint on this subject, and it's really interesting
- 8:56Speaker 1: to me. I'm really fascinated by the crime that is
- 9:00Speaker 1: at the bedrock of these music history genres, music history economies,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and often cases these genres may have not even come
- 9:13Speaker 1: to be if it weren't for these criminal elements back
- 9:16Speaker 1: in the day. So we unpack this a little bit
- 9:19Speaker 1: more in the exclusive section of the After Party today.
- 9:22Speaker 1: This whole sound system operator Jamaican music history piece that
- 9:26Speaker 1: we dug into in the B block here is that.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Then I get into it a little bit later coming
- 9:30Speaker 1: up in the exclusive part of the after party. You
- 9:32Speaker 1: can access that content by becoming an All Access member.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Just go to Disgrace onpod dot com to sign up,
- 9:38Speaker 1: just five bucks a month for the time being that
- 9:41Speaker 1: I know, I've been saying this over and over again,
- 9:42Speaker 1: the price is going up. We've been delayed, so you
- 9:45Speaker 1: can take advantage of that, and you can still get
- 9:48Speaker 1: it at five dollars before the price does increase, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: I promise you it is increasing. So that's coming up
- 9:56Speaker 1: later for All Access members. All right, that's there for you.
- 10:00Speaker 1: What I want to do now, I want to get
- 10:02Speaker 1: into your voicemails and your texts. And you know, I
- 10:07Speaker 1: was struggling when we did the Fish episode. I was
- 10:09Speaker 1: struggling to think of a good question, and I just
- 10:12Speaker 1: kind of went super basic, super super simple. You know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: obviously when people go to see Fish, they're getting fucked up.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Some aren't, some are. You know, I have my go tos.
- 10:22Speaker 1: You know, I'm about two maybe maybe three bourbons deep.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I know what I'm listening to. You know, everybody and
- 10:28Speaker 1: vibes in their own way. Everybody unwinds in their own way,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and I thought it would be interesting to ask this question.
- 10:33Speaker 1: You know, what do you listen to when, as one
- 10:36Speaker 1: of you put it, you're recreating. So let's check out
- 10:40Speaker 1: some voicemails and text with you guys on this question
- 10:43Speaker 1: of the week inspired by of course the Fish. And
- 10:46Speaker 1: check out this voicemail here from the five six.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Three Judy, Hi Drake.
- 10:53Speaker 3: This is Judy from the five six three and I
- 10:59Speaker 3: finally I can answer a question without having to think
- 11:04Speaker 3: too much about it. But what do I like to
- 11:08Speaker 3: listen to when I am recreating? And it's a great album,
- 11:16Speaker 3: very underrated. I don't hear anything about it, never heard
- 11:20Speaker 3: much about it, but becks Midnight Vultures it's great.
- 11:28Speaker 4: It is just.
- 11:29Speaker 2: A high for all of your senses. The horns, the
- 11:34Speaker 2: crazy lyrics, the visuals that are put into my head
- 11:40Speaker 2: while listening to it.
- 11:41Speaker 4: It's just wonderful.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I love it keeps you in a good mood, it.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Does not disappoint.
- 11:48Speaker 2: So I'm curious to hear what you think about that album.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Rock Go ROLLA Judy, I love Midnight Vultures. It's uh,
- 11:55Speaker 1: it's not my favorite Beck album and my favorite back
- 11:58Speaker 1: album is See Change, which is not It's not something
- 12:03Speaker 1: I want to listen to when I'm when i'm recreating,
- 12:05Speaker 1: as you say, but Midnight Vultures definitely is. I can
- 12:09Speaker 1: see that for sure. Crazy lyrics, lyrics are amazing, visuals great.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Just I hear you on the feel Good piece. That's
- 12:17Speaker 1: that's kind of like what I want I want to
- 12:18Speaker 1: get into when I when I'm recreating. I'm stealing your
- 12:21Speaker 1: word here, I love it. I want to get into
- 12:23Speaker 1: stuff that makes me happy, stuff that makes me feel good,
- 12:26Speaker 1: stuff that puts me, as you said, in a good
- 12:28Speaker 1: mood and does not disappoint. I don't want to get
- 12:30Speaker 1: too heavy, you know. I think when I first started recreating,
- 12:34Speaker 1: back when I was a younger man, I would listen
- 12:37Speaker 1: to heavier music, both literally heavy music and figuratively heavy music.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But you know, I like, I like to keep it
- 12:45Speaker 1: light these days. I don't know if that's a sign
- 12:47Speaker 1: of getting old or not. But uh, Judy, excellent pick
- 12:50Speaker 1: here with Midnight Vultures. Let's see what the seven O
- 12:54Speaker 1: three has to say on the subject.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Hey what's that Jake? Hey, this is Eric three. I
- 13:00Speaker 4: think you left the message asking about what do you
- 13:03Speaker 4: like to listen to when you have edibles. I just
- 13:07Speaker 4: really started ticking edibles, so I guess I'm kind of
- 13:11Speaker 4: a newbie at this. But anyway, what I like to
- 13:14Speaker 4: listen to when I'm doing edibles, Man, what I really
- 13:18Speaker 4: enjoyed you're gonna laugh is I really like the pet
- 13:20Speaker 4: shop boys, early early pet shot boys. Don't get me wrong,
- 13:25Speaker 4: dofinitely early pet shot boys. And I guess that's it.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Take care bin all right, seven or three pet shot boys,
- 13:32Speaker 1: not just any pet shot boys, early pet shot boys.
- 13:37Speaker 1: You know what I'm gonna do for you seven or three.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Next time I'm recreating, I'm gonna listen to Little West
- 13:43Speaker 1: End Girls. This song is incredible. By the way, West
- 13:47Speaker 1: End Girls, you know this is gonna pair well with
- 13:50Speaker 1: Back's Midnight Vultures as well. I think you guys have
- 13:52Speaker 1: stumbled into a sort of a good little vibe here
- 13:55Speaker 1: for a playlist. Could have used you on the mixtape
- 13:58Speaker 1: mixology session we had with the Patreon listeners a couple
- 14:01Speaker 1: of weeks ago last week. That was fun. By the way,
- 14:04Speaker 1: if you were in on that, still have made the mixtape.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But hey, it hasn't even been a full seven days.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Actually it has been actually seven days, eight days, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm going to get into making those tapes soon and
- 14:14Speaker 1: get them out to you guys. My boy ish in
- 14:16Speaker 1: the seven eight one back in the Bean hits us up.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Let's hear what he's got to.
- 14:19Speaker 5: Say, Jake, what up? Good boy Ish? Just checking in.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Let's talk about the fish. Yes, am I guilty of
- 14:31Speaker 5: going to a fish show? Yes? Am I guilty of
- 14:35Speaker 5: going to a Trey A Henastasio show.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Yes?
- 14:39Speaker 1: Am I guilty of.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Crossing paths and hanging out with the balloon people?
- 14:45Speaker 1: Yes?
- 14:46Speaker 5: That being said, thank you for the light layer of
- 14:51Speaker 5: anxiety that this episode triggered. I enjoyed it. I will
- 14:58Speaker 5: listen to it again next week.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Thank you again.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Keep up the great work, Disco.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Disco Ish, it's been a minute. Thanks for getting at us.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Did not mean to inspire any level of anxiety. I
- 15:15Speaker 1: like how you're sort of insinuating that you know, the
- 15:19Speaker 1: music you listen to when you recreate is of course
- 15:20Speaker 1: fish and with the balloon people. You're kind of bringing
- 15:22Speaker 1: around full circle there, But did not mean to trigger
- 15:25Speaker 1: the anxiety there. And I actually dig how you're just
- 15:28Speaker 1: low key mentioning that you're going to go back and
- 15:29Speaker 1: listen to this again next week, which is awesome. And
- 15:35Speaker 1: now I want to know more about your disgrace Land
- 15:37Speaker 1: listening habits, so please let us know. Stay in touch,
- 15:40Speaker 1: don't be a stranger. Ish always appreciate your voicemails and
- 15:43Speaker 1: your text Speaking of texts and speaking of recreating the
- 15:48Speaker 1: nine to seven eight right say, and you know what
- 15:49Speaker 1: would be dope an episode about snot between the life
- 15:53Speaker 1: and death of Lynn, the straight up album after his
- 15:56Speaker 1: death and his short lived replacement Tommy Vex later from
- 16:00Speaker 1: Bad Wolves being a complete piece of shit. You know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: someone was heavy on this not thing about a year
- 16:07Speaker 1: or so ago and we lost track of it. I
- 16:09Speaker 1: just part of me can't take this serious, but part
- 16:12Speaker 1: of me feels like I have to. I have to
- 16:13Speaker 1: look into this. On the recreating question three oh one,
- 16:17Speaker 1: King Gizzard in the Lizard Wizard. When I first heard
- 16:20Speaker 1: this name, I didn't take them seriously, And of course
- 16:23Speaker 1: they've become their own sort of musical phenomenon. And uh yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I can't say that I've ever just as I've never
- 16:29Speaker 1: seen Fish on purpose, I've never listened to King Gizzard
- 16:32Speaker 1: in the Lizard Wizard on purpose either. But I will.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'll have to get into that. Four point two writes, saying, Hey,
- 16:39Speaker 1: as a person that first smoked the weed back in
- 16:43Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties, got to say, we all listened to
- 16:45Speaker 1: Peter Frampton. Do you feel like we do when we smoked?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Oh boy, these days I like stuff with a solid
- 16:53Speaker 1: group or beats so I can just vibe out. But yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 1: the old school we'ed smoking experience Peter Frampton. Highly recommend Frampton.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Like someone once said that that Peter Frampton album was
- 17:03Speaker 1: issued to every kid in Suburbia when it came out
- 17:06Speaker 1: in the nic come of the late seventies, though was
- 17:08Speaker 1: it the eighties? I don't know. Huge the Frampton. The
- 17:12Speaker 1: Frampton came to me late. You know, I was never
- 17:15Speaker 1: a real big Frampton fan, but I get it. I
- 17:17Speaker 1: completely get it. Three zero three text in Hey is
- 17:20Speaker 1: a member of Gen X, which I call the great
- 17:22Speaker 1: Sampler Platter generation. My musical taste remain very broad. MTV
- 17:27Speaker 1: exposed us to pop, metal and hip hop, and I
- 17:29Speaker 1: fell into the jam scene early in college along with
- 17:33Speaker 1: and enjoyed everything that came with it. I fell in
- 17:36Speaker 1: love with the fish, they're saying the fish. I fell
- 17:38Speaker 1: in love with the Fish from Vermont most of all,
- 17:41Speaker 1: and have traveled all over the country chasing their music
- 17:44Speaker 1: and their scene. So what does an older fans spelled
- 17:48Speaker 1: pha n do when it's time to chill Well, I
- 17:52Speaker 1: like to listen to the sounds of Fish, the Fish,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I've gone down a rabbit hole, stick with the roots
- 18:00Speaker 1: of hip hop, James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, Rick James,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and I love sharing it with anyone who will listen.
- 18:05Speaker 1: My kids have got me into anime, modern pop, and
- 18:07Speaker 1: hip hop. M F Doom Who You Should Cover is
- 18:09Speaker 1: my favorite so far. I love exploring all the different
- 18:11Speaker 1: avenues that brings me down and I'm glad I came
- 18:13Speaker 1: across your podcast back in twenty eighteen, c C. Living
- 18:17Speaker 1: in the five eight five, Reppin the three oh three,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and the three three in the five eight five sends
- 18:26Speaker 1: in a bunch of photos here his record collection, which
- 18:29Speaker 1: looks kind of similar to my record collection. The first
- 18:32Speaker 1: three albums Curtis Mayfield right here and Tribe called Quest, Midnight, Marauders,
- 18:37Speaker 1: Bob Marley and the Whalers, Mothership, Connection by Parliament, Doing
- 18:43Speaker 1: It to Death by the JBS. I literally have all
- 18:45Speaker 1: of these records that you're showing myself on vinyl. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: do not have this Beastie Boye comp however, which is
- 18:53Speaker 1: in their last frame. Thanks for getting adas five A
- 18:56Speaker 1: five slash three oh three. You know, as you were
- 19:00Speaker 1: describing yourself being a member of gen X and what
- 19:03Speaker 1: you're exposed to through MTV and how Fish, the Fish
- 19:10Speaker 1: from Vermont hit you when you got into college, really
- 19:14Speaker 1: just describing so many of my friends that I grew
- 19:16Speaker 1: up with. We're on that exact saying trajectory, Bill Alatawo.
- 19:20Speaker 1: If you're listening, I'm talking about you specifically. Just you know,
- 19:25Speaker 1: Fish was just there for us. There was perfect timing,
- 19:27Speaker 1: perfect six one seven nine six six' six three. Eight

- 19:40Speaker 1: your record, collection. Whatnot, obviously this question of The week
- 19:44Speaker 1: was inspired by the madness that accompanies the music Of
- 19:48Speaker 1: fish from this week's full. Episode we've got more madness
- 19:54Speaker 1: coming up in the rewind slot this week with The
- 19:57Speaker 1: Tommy james and The seondell's. Episode and this is really
- 20:01Speaker 1: the mafia madness that inspired THE b block of this.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Episode and some of my favorite Double elvis production is
- 20:10Speaker 1: in this upcoming episode On Tommy james and The Sean.
