- 0:40Welcome back to. I have silver blunt.
- 0:42Penknife the Doctor Who comedy podcast back by popular demand.
- 0:47And I can say this with some Authority.
- 0:50Jon Benson Alia. Say hello.
- 0:53Good morning. Hello.
- 0:56How are you doing today? And I'm very well, thank you.
- 0:59How are you? Well, I have a question for you.
- 1:02Yes, far away in the words of Mula from the pirate Planet.
- 1:08Why? I why, why, why are we watching
- 1:14what we're watching today? Why are we watching this?
- 1:18Well, the story that I had chosen, is called the doctor,
- 1:24the Widow, and the Wardrobe. And I kind of wanted a polar
- 1:29opposite from the last fund these days, which was sitting
- 1:32there and because there were so many positives in that, you
- 1:35know, I mean, there's literally nothing to criticize whereas
- 1:39Doctor the Widow wardrobe is kind of a mirror image of that.
- 1:44Indeed, there's so yeah maybe it's a challenge to root out any
- 1:49positives today but it should be quite a considerable challenge
- 1:53are aching. I watch this yesterday.
- 1:55Okay I couldn't finish it. It's famously my least favorite
- 2:00Doctor. Who story of all time?
- 2:03Forget the dominators. Forget underworld.
- 2:05This is my least favorite Doctor.
- 2:07Who story. In fact it took me.
- 2:10Five years to review it on my blog because I refuse to go back
- 2:13and watch it again. I fell asleep when it was first
- 2:16aired on Christmas day, and I just didn't want to watch it
- 2:19again. Yeah.
- 2:22Oh my God. I mean, it's just not one of
- 2:24those stories that I would readily.
- 2:27You know, saw watching a heartbeat, you know, it's not
- 2:29the sort of, you know. Oh, right.
- 2:31I'm gonna go to the DVD show. Take that was not all I do.
- 2:35Yeah, let's pick the pot to the Widow and the Wardrobe.
- 2:39Anybody I watched it a few days ago and I haven't seen it.
- 2:44Like remember when the last time it was I think about two years
- 2:49but see also it's just not one of those stories that, you know,
- 2:53I don't see. But yeah it's totally on board
- 2:56with what you're saying. There's, there's plenty to
- 2:59criticize. I was rather hoping that you
- 3:02would have more positives to say them be just, so there were some
- 3:04positives in there. I'm hoping you have at least one
- 3:07because I couldn't find one. So, Might be that might have to
- 3:11wait to sleep. So yeah, that well interested.
- 3:14And this is like, I think this is the first time I've got into
- 3:16this ready to criticize with somebody where because I usually
- 3:21don't even like, revenge of the Cybermen even, which is a story.
- 3:24I've struggled, even the silver Nemesis, I found massive
- 3:28positives in those stories and things to enjoy.
- 3:30That's great. You know, that there are some,
- 3:35there are plenty of good things, you know, dotted about you.
- 3:39No, you know the lead axons and you know you know Tom Baker is
- 3:44Slade in the Amar. So you've already got three
- 3:46positives. Yeah.
- 3:47Sylvester McCoy inside the order.
- 3:49You know you've got two more steps they already.
- 3:51Yeah. So now this is Remington in
- 3:53episode three who are just think, is delightful?
- 3:55That's the way we surely do. Honey, we shall I do my God.
- 4:01She needed like, I needed her backstory and I got it in that
- 4:05in that commentary. Our you do so?
- 4:08Yes. But before we start, so I have
- 4:13spent many an hour over the last couple of years reading, some
- 4:20things that you have written. And I know it'll be this last
- 4:23time, but if you could very quickly, again, tell us about
- 4:26the books that you have out there, okay?
- 4:29All right. Well, I have written half
- 4:30thousand reviews and guides to the doctors from the other
- 4:36color. Here, all that's big.
- 4:39Perpetual Outsider, they're available 40 pounds each and
- 4:43Amazon eBooks. Those shocking job.
- 4:46That is a shocking price. I'm sorry, bump that up.
- 4:53I'm not good at doing that, I'm not good at doing, but I've
- 4:55never been one to my mind Champion.
- 4:57Is, if you like Doctor Who and you interested in, you know, job
- 5:04hurts me to Peter, cordero's, give it a go.
- 5:08You might like them, or if you want a good sleep, good also
- 5:12good. Well, you know, if you'll
- 5:14forgive the double entendre, I'm gonna blow your trumpet now.
- 5:21How do you add? I want to say that.
- 5:24I mean you you offer a phenomenal take on the Matt
- 5:28Smith era which I. Yeah.
- 5:30But in a form of confirmation bias, I was just reading it.
- 5:35Like this is half this and this man is literally actualizing how
- 5:38I think, however you're not a complete more fit a sir, you
- 5:43really like the couple years that that use that.
- 5:48So that's a like it's Matt Smith and No, no.
- 5:50It's Capaldi is no matter their own volume, aren't they?
- 5:55No. No.
- 5:56Excuse all the news stories that they just reviews?
- 5:59Because, you know, a lot of them, you know, don't really
- 6:03have kind of like extras and climbing trees and but a lot of
- 6:06them aren't you know, in book form.
- 6:07So I just thought the next you know by Wolves reviews in one
- 6:11book for the new era which is from Christopher Eccleston to be
- 6:16scauldy and yeah that's that's the abilities for you.
- 6:20But she's, they want to bounce or we never been shot at last.
- 6:22I've actually, and I love that that you talk about the extras
- 6:26and you offer, like, sometimes many reviews on the extras and
- 6:29the commentaries as well. No one else does that as far as
- 6:32I'm aware? Because I've not read anywhere
- 6:34else much, I'm sure there must be wants be on Doctor.
- 6:39Who magazine that? Just loves everything they say.
- 6:42Everything's amazing because of course they hear ya.
- 6:47Yeah, pretty soon uses that you know, he's all everything so
- 6:49great, you know, that they're being paid to do that, you know,
- 6:52that they can, you know, that they got to toe the party line
- 6:55and but what is what is not hideous, buy your books.
- 7:00So I'm telling you now go out there and read them, okay.
- 7:03Thank you for like 20 pounds each.
- 7:07So II was a tenor last time if we keep doing this That's
- 7:17probably my inside bank account cleared out.
- 7:19Okay, that's probably my bank account doubled.
- 7:25So okay, I'm avoiding pressing play.
- 7:30Are we good? Do this is going to be done.
- 7:34These, it's like ripping a blastula, you know, just going
- 7:37to be done. Okay, I'll count as in, in the
- 7:40style of Matt Smith, Go For It Go, but I can't even voice.
- 7:46Five out of full-on afraid and a 2 and a 1.
- 7:52Let's go. Amy.
- 7:55Hey we go. Here we go.
- 7:56Right planet Earth. That's not a bad start.
- 8:01Yeah, I don't normally like pretty, a special environment
- 8:07and a Star Wars ask opening as we pass a spaceship pans over
- 8:11the camera. I think he's actually quite a
- 8:13good opening but the problem is it's completely irrelevant to
- 8:17what comes next. There's a lot of this going on
- 8:19though, you know, Time of the Doctor opens like this.
- 8:22So does the commands go to war over these unseen?
- 8:25Teachers that we've, we can little glimpses of which are
- 8:28tantalizing more interesting than what we get.
- 8:30I mean this, I mean, this is good start.
- 8:33I mean, it's blow directing, there's not an action in slow
- 8:36motion. But can I say, okay, this
- 8:41exemplifies, this story for me, it's, I say it's the same way I
- 8:45described at Stones writing. It's 22.
- 8:49It's too fast. It's too slow mo.
- 8:52It's too wacky. It's extreme.
- 8:57Yeah, it's extreme seasonal. Yeah, there we go.
- 8:59See you summed up in the word. Yeah.
- 9:02Thank you. Yeah.
- 9:04Never trust any cash. Never trust gimmicky, who never
- 9:10trust you, you know. So I mean what exactly is Matt
- 9:15Smith trying to bring? Well, he's not going on is a
- 9:18space or isn't it? What he's open space right now.
- 9:21So technically he should be sucked out.
- 9:22Surely he should either be Exploded or yeah.
- 9:26Oh, here we go, guys. But this is but that is some
- 9:32okay. I'm always very praiseworthy.
- 9:34Knew who-who some dodgy CS over there.
- 9:38It's not great. Yeah I mean you can tell like
- 9:40the queen sleeping around and he kind of looks like a bull's eye
- 9:44mask. Fucking.
- 9:44We opening titles really like oh you're terrible.
- 10:06I don't mind it really. I love the security.
- 10:08One, the call T 1. Where is that?
- 10:11Yeah, that sounds like so many. It's like it's like that song,
- 10:16Crazy, Horse's by the Ottomans and the in it, there's it does,
- 10:22you know what they say? Don't you.
- 10:23It's like Charlie says song. Okay, this is his name, you
- 10:33know, it's basically dressed in a plane crash Skinner.
- 10:36Again, this is everything I've seen Chris kinery praised the
- 10:39exact same roll out numbers. She's in marble chips and pero
- 10:45Midsomer Murders, and she can handle this by exactly the same
- 10:49parents of this kind of prissy, sort of, you know,
- 10:52upper-middle-class you know, Do you good suppose I didn't
- 10:58replace gonna well. It's but she never liked saying,
- 11:06if any other kind of role, you know, like a do an Axe Murderer,
- 11:10you know, you know, drunk push her away.
- 11:13You know, we are now we're literally advocating for Claire
- 11:17Skinner to play an Ax Murderer. Yes, yes.
- 11:21Okay, so the the backwards spacesuit, there's of my heart's
- 11:24already thinking with this, okay, it's not that, okay, it's
- 11:27not that, I don't like funny Doctor Who I think my way into
- 11:30Doctor Who is he I don't like obvious.
- 11:33You are, I don't like you this issues.
- 11:36It talks down to kids this for humor.
- 11:38Yeah, I think, you know, for me, good humor is, is subtle, you
- 11:43know, and not always. So, obviously, signposting.
- 11:46And my God, that kid's glasses at all.
- 11:49Well, okay, okay, so these kids. Yeah.
- 11:51Right. They're not giving Dreadful
- 11:52performers, it's okay. I think they're pretty dream and
- 11:55some dirty dreary characterized, but why did they make him so
- 12:00speccy Yeah. And I say this as somebody who
- 12:04is blind as a fact, you know, I mean I used to have really bad
- 12:09bosses but they were kind of the opposite because my eyes.
- 12:11So my I say so poor that you know, when he used to lie, got a
- 12:16literally, shrink my eyes right in the glass because, you know,
- 12:19they were kind of like my disgusting thoughts because the
- 12:22lens is safe and thick but he's got the opposite problem.
- 12:26They kind of you know something magnify and it is just such a
- 12:30thoughtful Garcia Okay, my friend, Sunny State wearing
- 12:34glasses. I just hate them.
- 12:36Both the I got glasses as well. I refuse to wear them, not
- 12:39because I mean I'm vain but it's not for vanity reasons.
- 12:42It's just I just hate wearing. I hate having that lens between
- 12:45the hero comes in casting you know, Gotham face is just dark.
- 12:53See, there are some people that would say this is all very
- 12:56amusing that's me if in the backward spaceship, you know,
- 12:59waddling about we watched But you're deaf last time.
- 13:03There was a lot of humor in that it was really sophisticated.
- 13:06It was really clever, really clever humans, you know,
- 13:24it's, you know, like, And I think I laughed, but I didn't
- 13:30laugh because that was funny. I laugh, because
- 13:53for me, I think I probably my favorite of a new doctors.
- 13:57Wow, okay. I'm going to offer you an
- 13:59opposing, professional opinion, an opposing, Viewpoint, the
- 14:04other state where he had. I was never convinced that Smith
- 14:08was the doctor, not one, but you're not throughout.
- 14:11And I think that was my biggest problem in his era is I just saw
- 14:15this wacky kid and I don't think he ever had the gravitas that
- 14:19other people. See.
- 14:21I don't think he did anger very well.
- 14:24And I think as he was as the series went on, Five, six and
- 14:28seven. He became a series of Comedy
- 14:31quirks. Yeah.
- 14:33And they just got very tired. Yeah.
- 14:38But I think it's kind of sometimes cereal, but they
- 14:44given, I think it's not really worthy of what they can do, you
- 14:48know? And I think these County see
- 14:50something that, you know, to the degree as well, you know, the
- 14:53doctor, these scones, and He's probably the best actor to have
- 14:59ever played the dog. Yeah, I agree.
- 15:01I think you know, if I could pick you know,
- 15:22it's great. This is I've got a question for
- 15:25you in a bit then I hate to do this to you, it's not Final
- 15:28thing to do, I want you to remember, I want you to do a
- 15:31list. I want you to rank the new Who
- 15:34doctors best to. All right.
- 15:37Okay, okay right. So awesome.
- 15:42So I'm going to get so much sleeping.
- 15:44I know you are, that's gone. Yeah which I don't think is
- 15:48explicitly by think it's mainly. The scripting I think he's
- 15:53calling. I think she's just you know
- 15:56partly because you know, she doesn't Really get so much to
- 15:58do. She's kind of like this kind of
- 16:00passive present which is like I'll be out on the outskirts and
- 16:04you would have thought, you know, giving this first female
- 16:06doctor, they given they should have given a more proactive
- 16:09things to do and instead they just kind of reducer character
- 16:13to this kind of bumbling simpleton and it's watch only
- 16:17been struggling for that. I've got an opposing viewpoints
- 16:19of that as well, but go on no not yet.
- 16:22No you go first. Oh well I was going to say so I
- 16:25think Jody whiskey is absolutely the perfect doctor.
- 16:27For now I adore her and I think because we're in a very angry
- 16:33cynical time at the moment, you only have to look on social
- 16:36media to see that. And here's a ray of sunshine of
- 16:40positivity of optimism. And you know what?
- 16:43I watch her, I feel really happy like, and so it's great.
- 16:47I'll look at social media and I'm miserable and then I'll go
- 16:49and watch dr. Who and I'm really happy.
- 16:52So, but that's, that's great. Doing that.
- 17:40But yeah, I mean you know in stuff like that.
- 17:54You know, a couple of Seasons I think I'll probably be probably
- 17:56more be more higher up, least something I've got a Porsche
- 17:59list just for one second because I have soaked about something in
- 18:03earlier on. I said to you, there was a
- 18:05moment where Steven Moffat is basically, is the doctor
- 18:08talking. But it's Steven Moffat talking,
- 18:11I spits here where he says, I know, I know.
- 18:17So what he's actually saying is, I'm so clever.
- 18:20Oh, my creative. This magic, this is just costly
- 18:58stuff. It's actually reminds me about
- 19:02when I was a kid, you know, they used to have movies like Mary
- 19:05Poppins and Bedknobs & broomsticks and all of that.
- 19:09And this is kind of like dr. Than attempting to do that but
- 19:13without without the charm, the weight, you know, the
- 19:17likeability know. It seems don't know he's not a
- 19:22jumped into like the pain. Thing in Mary Poppins that's
- 19:25really imaginative. I'm really great it here.
- 19:28Yeah. It's whack a prison in front of
- 19:29the tree. Crawl into it and end up in a
- 19:32forest and it's just like I know a couple of proxy ham looks.
- 19:35I mean you can't sleep in a bloody hand.
- 19:37Oh well actually job, I love her.
- 19:40I really love before and I just you know I ended up looking like
- 19:46looking like one of the money's here in me to Mars because it
- 19:48got so wrapped up. Because every time I see that
- 20:03speccy kid, I want to slap it around the face with a wet fish,
- 20:06even when he's not saying anything, he's just say like
- 20:09looking a bit, a bit simple. Again, it goes back to one of
- 20:17the annoying things about Well, why see some people like things
- 20:22about what era is that? They would seem them Keys.
- 20:26Oh, that's kind of rude of the Damned.
- 20:33Yeah, because I mean, you've gotta be kidding.
- 20:36The Beast below. Nightmare until you've got Angie
- 20:41novelty, you got the kids in this, you skipped over lows you
- 20:45skipped over that kid from night, terrors.
- 20:49Okay, get an icy River song. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:00Yeah. You remember that between
- 21:13Russell T? Davies, Russell, T Davies, but
- 21:17he writes them as young adults. He was starting on their own,
- 21:21you know, starting on their own Journey, where are the keys?
- 21:24I swear Warren. Sarah, Jane Adventures.
- 21:26You know that it's literally how to write children.
- 21:30They're smart. Yeah.
- 21:32That's smart. You know?
- 21:33And they're, you know, very talented that that is what
- 21:35pizza. I mean, you know, my eldest, I
- 21:37mean, she's five and she's smart as a button.
- 21:40So, you know, and you know my, you know, youngest always, you
- 21:44know, already showing great signs of talent, you know,
- 21:47enjoying salty, and all of That they are young adults.
- 21:50Do you remember talking to be actualized in the forest of the
- 21:54light where soil is complete diversion where the doctor tells
- 21:58that kid not to take her medication.
- 22:00Like oh, you don't know how this medication like that is the most
- 22:04irresponsible saying I've ever seen in doctor.
- 22:08Yeah, yeah, it's just what the are they feeling better?
- 22:14These are okay at least these joint president.
- 22:17I got a big question for you. Now that's it.
- 22:19So yeah, all TD Christmas tended to go for like big spectactors
- 22:24in the Voyager, the dams, The Runaway Bride like Christmas
- 22:29Invasion. Independence Day, he did like
- 22:31riffs on movies. Basically Moffat goes for books,
- 22:35doesn't it? Christmas Carol you think about
- 22:42that? You think riffing off because
- 22:44you know the title of this tells you what?
- 22:46This is absolutely. Uh yeah I mean he's you know
- 22:51bargain-basement nine years, I mean it's yeah I mean it's not a
- 22:56new thing though. I mean, you know I mean it's
- 22:59especially in like the mid seventies and the late
- 23:02seventies. You know, when they Riff on you
- 23:03know like a hammer or mmm, it's on the old, some baked stories
- 23:08and then they kind of going through like more, you know,
- 23:10more literally things in the drain Williams.
- 23:13You know, you've got like a prisoner of saying that you've
- 23:17kind of got, you know, sort of a Establish a lasting the Creature
- 23:20from the peg. You know, it's kind of like a
- 23:21little bit like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
- 23:23She's like the evil queen as and she'll address these queries.
- 23:29And she the band is kind of like the warmth, and I suppose you've
- 23:34got the same parallel coming around here, but I think we can
- 23:37offer. I think he more, he goes more,
- 23:39obviously, Christmas presently, whereas kind of the rusty.
- 23:42They just kind of, we'd spent all his neck.
- 23:45It's just kind of berries battle.
- 23:46So, so we had a little bit of feedback.
- 23:49On on Twitter before we even did this because I put out a picture
- 23:52saying I'm wearing this in preparation for tomorrow and all
- 23:56right. Okay.
- 23:57A few people come at me saying this is their favorite and fair
- 23:59enough. I'm really, I'm glad you love
- 24:01this. I wish I could see it through
- 24:03your eyes. But one person said, like they
- 24:07love the aesthetic of it. I love how this looks, but I
- 24:10think this is too gaudy. It's to Christmas.
- 24:14It's like it's literally okay. It's looks like me grabbing some
- 24:19Missions a bull balls and shove them down your throat and saying
- 24:22yes. Yeah.
- 24:23Whitening Fates this is gonna be the most Christmas Christmas
- 24:27ever you know like yeah. Oh my God.
- 24:30You know, I've got to say, I mean, I hate Christmas.
- 24:34You know what? See, I'm a scrooge hate
- 24:36Christmas. Are you all of his key?
- 24:38Now I don't know. I just don't.
- 24:40You have a child? How can you hate?
- 24:43Once a false Choice? Like I mean now.
- 24:44I like because of what see kids. You know, and I can, you know, I
- 24:50can really Christmas through their eyes, you know, less
- 24:53cynical eyes, but you know, before they were bored, I'm just
- 24:57like, oh no Christmas. Again, least, most challenging
- 25:01of it. I don't like being told when and
- 25:05how to enjoy themselves, because I will enjoy myself on my own
- 25:08terms, okay? Christmas.
- 25:21I get a chance to be as Jolly as I want to be, you know?
- 25:24Yeah, fair enough. People to like Christmas, you
- 25:30know? Because get my wife runs
- 25:31Christmas. You know she loves her daughter
- 25:34was out. Come on till later.
- 26:02What's your opinion of Doctor Who Christmas insofar as should
- 26:06it be like all about Christmas? Should it be an episode with
- 26:11elements of Christmas? Because the rtt kind of did that
- 26:14big knee in Voyage of the Damned?
- 26:16I think there's a few, you know, it's a Carol when a few weeks
- 26:19but essentially it's a story in its own right?
- 26:22Where were you for me? I mean, it's like the only thing
- 26:25that's not all of them revolve around Christians.
- 26:30You know, there's one with a go to Miami.
- 26:32The my am twice named counted, they'll stop going over.
- 26:35Yes, and there's the one we would be great.
- 26:38Sondra is that the one with the ceiling in the lives that we're
- 26:46dealt with breaks to lift? Its our That breaks my holiday
- 26:50episode. Oh no.
- 26:51That's the, that's the last. But he's never coming out.
- 26:54Yeah, it's down. Yeah, they become really Nets
- 26:56that. That is excellent.
- 26:58Yeah, we are talking about Only Fools and Horses because this is
- 27:01so bad. Oh, yeah.
- 27:04What, what these great big burden that was What are those?
- 27:12I mean, it's just Of course, you know the Specky git as to, you
- 27:17know, leave a rogue child, isn't it?
- 27:20You know, after all right, you know, don't go in the Box, well,
- 27:23go in the box and encounter a CGI Boerboel which grows at its
- 27:27own dilution. You know, have we come across
- 27:29today any of moffatt's gender politics yet because we will, by
- 27:33the end of this, I am a mother and I will, you know, figuring
- 27:38it is very obvious, isn't it? I know, I mean, don't get me
- 27:43wrong. I'm Pro mother, you know?
- 27:46Yeah. I mean, I'm, you know, I mean, I
- 27:49have to be, I mean, I mean, you know, I've got, you know, my
- 27:53wife and I've got two daughters around, the only went there.
- 27:55So, you'll have you are outnumbered job.
- 27:58I don't remember Peaks on. Yeah, they have the power.
- 28:01Every time you do, you do your little girls little girls going
- 28:05to be a big girl, one day and then you'll be really around,
- 28:08but I know. The difference between saying
- 28:18you know like between having a strong Mother character and
- 28:22having someone say mother earth you know?
- 28:24And like yeah I don't feel like it's almost that thing of like
- 28:28if you have to shove that in people's faces, then you're
- 28:33saying that that you're not representing this woman
- 28:37struggling after here, she's doing.
- 28:40Whereas if you are, you know, Austin Strong, you know, female
- 28:44Character. And that is, that is lot more as
- 28:47a lot more effective. But again, it all comes back to
- 28:50the left, the lack of subtlety, isn't it?
- 28:52You know, there is nothing subtle about this.
- 28:54This episode. Jackie Tyler, please?
- 28:56About Jackie, Tyler your turkey. Turner is a great example.
- 29:00You know, she's funny. And she's feisty and but she
- 29:03also get some really good moments like no one wants to
- 29:06inspire, you know, when she can defend ourselves and I think
- 29:08that is great in right. But I break that, I don't
- 29:11remember the scene where she, you know is like I I am a mother
- 29:15and I will protect my brood. You know, the, you didn't need
- 29:18to do that with those characters.
- 29:21Yeah. Yeah, but she's, you know, she's
- 29:23naturally, you know, funny by spirit.
- 29:25I think that's that's, you know, that is far more positive.
- 29:29Then you know what? We get in there.
- 29:30So But this girl here, I think she's okay.
- 29:35I'm going to say A+ now. Hang on to your hat.
- 29:38I think she's given her a good performance but she's yeah, I
- 29:42agree. I think.
- 29:43Yeah. Is it son named Holly something?
- 29:47That, which is so a memorable, that's the trouble writing is
- 29:50unmemorable. So what?
- 29:52Yeah, but they see. This is a big problem that I
- 29:56encountered when we review the maximum there is that the
- 29:59character the expense of character, Is so unmemorable?
- 30:03They just kind of like spoken, you know, so can, you know,
- 30:07carrots and stages for the hell of it?
- 30:09Whereas, you know, I mean like, you know, I'm just, you know,
- 30:13it's of them are pyramids of Mars.
- 30:15You know that doctor will look. This is not for long.
- 30:17Ibrahim that mean there's not four, not even calling stiffened
- 30:20last month but he kind of you get more verb.
- 30:23Yes. Getting the impression that
- 30:24their ration will be people that actually, you know, live real
- 30:26lives and they've got, you know, lines are said what they do in
- 30:29the story, but we've here. I just saw a, you know?
- 30:34Yeah for whatever reason Moffat choice to make the doctor like
- 30:38the most in like the trouble is, yeah.
- 30:41Is that the incidental characters of the mafia era?
- 30:43They always stress how important they are but remember that Lorna
- 30:48bucket in a good man? Goes to war and they all like
- 30:51yeah. Oh my God, your lawn a bucket
- 30:54and she doesn't do anything, you know.
- 30:58I mean Who the hell's gonna back you?
- 31:00I mean she could be the The cleaning and sealing these great
- 31:06big important characters, but there's no substance, there's no
- 31:10kind of real depth or, you know, backgrounds think in stories
- 31:15like that. You know, we're going to come
- 31:16onto the plate again was, and obviously of this note, right?
- 31:25I mean, there's there's just nothing to these characters that
- 31:28we suggest that, you know, they're living breathing people.
- 31:31Go outside of this story. What?
- 31:34And their try a tries to add that emotional element?
- 31:37I either dad's not coming home for Christmas and she's putting
- 31:41on a brave face for her kids. Yeah I'll tell you what go and
- 31:45watch Love, Actually, go and watch the scene where, oh my
- 31:48God, I can't be actress's name, she plays it, Alan rickman's
- 31:51wife. Thank you wherever times you
- 31:55realize is that Alan rickman's have having some form of an
- 31:58affair and then has to go and put a brave face in front of her
- 32:02kids at Christmas, that is a master class of how to write an
- 32:06act that. Yeah, this is the same thing but
- 32:10whilst Moffitt is literally feeding you spoonfuls of syrup
- 32:13at the same time. Yeah, it's just so much passion.
- 32:17You know, I'm not on a more serious note.
- 32:18I mean Christmas you know some people, you know, it's really
- 32:22traumatic time. They lost a loved one or, you
- 32:25know, a family member orko strains and you know, to suggest
- 32:29that, you know, you can just bring them back to life for you.
- 32:31Remember, he's also okay, because my mom passed on
- 32:38December the 15th. So Christmas is always is always
- 32:42like a really kind of its touched with sadness.
- 32:45I love Christmas but it's now touch with me on this but I
- 32:48never thought about that. That's another reason to hate
- 32:50this now but yeah. So I'm gonna I'm going to think
- 32:54really hard. Every every 50 and mate.
- 32:57Yeah, yeah. It's one of my pet hates the
- 33:01year in which they just bring counties back to life because
- 33:05he's just lazy Rising. It's you know is crap.
- 33:09You know that that is not how dramaworks you can't just.
- 33:12Suddenly remember somebody back to life will bring them.
- 33:15That's like through here's or you know emotions or whatever
- 33:21what sort of the basics. What is your little
- 33:24five-year-old girl? Said to you while that?
- 33:26Yeah, if I lose somebody, but if I think so.
- 33:29Yeah, you're my imaginary friends and I'm telling you to
- 33:31be at my wedding, you know, can I actually make that happen?
- 33:36Yeah, exactly, yeah. Oh, I'm going to remember you
- 33:38back to like, yeah. And kids watching that.
- 33:41He's not a positive, message to send out to kids.
- 33:44Unfortunately, you know, Do You Remember Loving Monsters, Love a
- 33:49Monster, which is universally panned and ends with The the
- 33:54knowledge that the doctor was there on the day when Elders,
- 33:56mom died, and she stays dead and its really sad.
- 34:00And you know what that? That is a, that is a message to
- 34:02Children. This does happen.
- 34:05Yeah, exactly, yeah. It's like it or not, you know,
- 34:07it's terrible. He's the worst thing in the
- 34:09world, but unfortunately, that's how life works.
- 34:14And, you know, it's just I got, this is, this is, this is
- 34:21another big issue. Ooh, with the era though.
- 34:24And that is wasting incredible guest actors.
- 34:27Or I know you've got a mean, you've got Bill Bailey, you've
- 34:30got Arabella. We're all basically a fink was
- 34:34in. Benidorm?
- 34:35Yeah. There is and that they just do
- 34:38nothing, they disciples. I mean, there's no character
- 34:42here is that there's just nothing for them that to even
- 34:44get their teeth into no very science.
- 34:47Again, you know what? Ivan christ-like theme Beal.
- 34:49I mean by that lied about having money issues.
- 34:52Oh, Oh my God, it's so obvious, you know?
- 34:59He's a comedy right up. There are ways of disguising
- 35:02that without saying, who good will be issues, you know, like,
- 35:07what did he did, he decide don't throw you out the book of crap
- 35:10jokes and some, you know, he's just he's painful.
- 35:14Yes, for six seasons. Sorry, you know, that looks
- 35:20strikingly like the shaft, they go up in Planet of the Daleks.
- 35:24Oh yeah. Yes.
- 36:08Of the is completely forgettable as an idea of race.
- 36:12Look, fantastic. I don't know girls, I did it.
- 36:16You did it, you know, there you go.
- 36:18I take something positive because I wouldn't mind like one
- 36:22of those in my house. I mean, that's really creepy.
- 36:25That's pretty cool. I mean, I mean I mean the BCD
- 36:29bring up these figurines, I'm amazed they haven't kind of
- 36:32brought out a, you know, massive, you know, life-sized
- 36:36version of that. I think that means to treat
- 36:38their You know, if you use that in the comments, the sense of
- 36:40I'm surprisingly Doctor Who, right?
- 36:43It's not afraid of having phallic Creations on display.
- 36:49I'm talking of the vervoids and Creature from the pit.
- 36:52And, you know, things like that, those Towers, we just saw they
- 36:56erect with an enormous head. That is one of the most phallic
- 36:59things I've ever seen in Doctor. Who I know you would have
- 37:03fought. You, who would have learned,
- 37:08Even though the hell is that about the possibilities are
- 37:13endless, what were, you know? I was like rubbing his hands
- 37:22together. Hahahaha.
- 37:27OK. John, he's not averse to putting
- 37:28a penis or two of the screen, right?
- 37:30So there he was just like eight in one go.
- 37:33Also I'm strong it was just wrong.
- 37:37Just one please. These are.
- 37:41Yeah, I mean you should still be interrogated by these and
- 37:46rezoning artists. I think it's a big mistake to
- 37:49actually oguri really sides cry. Now, It's not little boys named
- 37:54Cyril. He's gone.
- 37:56Several. Yeah.
- 37:57I mean, how do you think of a more Specky name for a kid as
- 38:00well? I'm so sorry.
- 38:08Sorry. Sorry Sue.
- 38:10What do you think about the answers?
- 38:11Only costumes, don't look nothing.
- 38:14Like what they wearing the case of Andrews on.
- 38:16I mean, we just want my standard spacing timely and they usually
- 38:20good at that sort of thing. All day about continuity from.
- 38:23Classic Series. Yeah.
- 38:25Do something doesn't mean it's just like a mofo, you know.
- 38:27He could whole load of classic story names that have hit one
- 38:32out of random. Alright, case Avengers ID?
- 38:34I know I'll use that. Yeah.
- 38:37You know, core we got to do, we do more drink.
- 38:39Have you ever seen Black Books? Have I ever won?
- 38:44Seen Black Books known everything.
- 38:46Oh, I guess they're Bill Bailey is Sublime in that.
- 38:48Have you seen two doors down? No, okay Arabella we're is
- 38:52Sublime in that. Why aren't they Supply with
- 38:55this? I know.
- 38:56I know it's because they they are not given the right hat and
- 39:00ization and it just you know, I think he could have picked a
- 39:03worse story than the case of and resigning because the
- 39:05characterization that is just top.
- 39:08Draw, absolutely brilliant. Nuance that clever.
- 39:12We see, which is none of these. And there is none of that in
- 39:17this. And he's going to start crying
- 39:21again. Isn't the other Bill, Bailey's
- 39:23just like going, why the hell did I agree to this?
- 39:25You know, it's going to be even worse than Strictly.
- 39:27Come Dancing with the many years.
- 39:32But do you think this is like the most telling is the worst
- 39:36example of that. In this era I'm trying to think
- 39:39of like a worst bit of stunt casting where some oh no Olivia
- 39:42Colman in the 11th hour. Yeah I mean she was doing it.
- 39:47She barks like a dog. Question time, I mean it's easy
- 39:50money. I mean, maybe that's why the
- 39:54answers actually agree to do it, you know, because they don't
- 39:56really get to do anything in substance, but it would be like
- 39:59getting Derek Jacobi in Utopia and giving them giving him the
- 40:03part of one of the refugees, you know.
- 40:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:07Exactly. You know, where, as Russell T
- 40:09Davies had the good sense to actually cross them in the
- 40:12people to wall of of yarn and here.
- 40:15It's just really only very so many exams.
- 40:17I mean, you've got Tessa P Jones robbed jobs in Time of the
- 40:21Doctor. They get like some lines of
- 40:23Peace. Oh my God from Only Fools and
- 40:25Horses. Yeah, he's here.
- 40:29Welcome to Christmas, you know, in a in a phone booth and you
- 40:41think he could be the main body before I had even, okay, I'll
- 40:45leave even the say that like someone like Richard E Grotto,
- 40:48he's like, okay, I He's bragging, but he's a big name.
- 40:52He's sweet, he's wasted. And I'm very memorable.
- 40:55Sorry, I'm memorable roles the great intelligence.
- 40:58Yeah, he just stops around looking like this.
- 41:00You know, he's just, you know, done a pool to see you in ring.
- 41:04See you in Murray. See the ring ring.
- 41:06Yeah, not another one. Yeah.
- 41:08Absolutely. You know, these big name actors
- 41:12about if I just don't do it and yet and yet people like the
- 41:14actress who plays what other what her name is whoever plays
- 41:17and you have Angie and Artie. She's spotlighted amazingly like
- 41:21what, what's going on? And you know maybe we should
- 41:29have picked nightmare in silver. We're going to do that one day.
- 41:32What is it? You're a time traveler.
- 41:34We've seen you in the books and if you don't take as with you,
- 41:37I'm going to tell you.
- 42:02What's that kid in Kill the Moon?
- 42:06Kourtney always, she's like orcas.
- 42:09I'm gonna put it all on Pinterest.
- 42:11You are on the freaking moon like look around you, enjoy the
- 42:18experience, get off your phone. What happened to these kids
- 42:31statue? I've no idea what's going on
- 42:39there. You can't touch that.
- 42:56Yeah, Like, and I think some of these
- 43:19performances in his first season, I think erection.
- 43:22Yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 43:23But he's just given material vibe that.
- 43:26I dated he's worthy of him. I like incredible.
- 43:35Like he's given an incredible performance in that.
- 43:38So I actually I said he's a very good actor.
- 43:42I don't think he's given adequate material really apart
- 43:47from a few times in Israel. Yeah, which is fair enough.
- 43:52And I you coming back to the original count downloads, it
- 43:57would be best thing. David said I'm working on the
- 43:593DO maximum and they beat on me. He's all yours are.
- 44:03Okay. So I'll do mine in Reverse.
- 44:07It's not over Jodie. Whittaker.
- 44:13Second, third and fourth and Matt Smith right?
- 44:19At the bottom of all the classics as well.
- 44:26Just doesn't convince me. Yeah, but I think a lot of these
- 44:31things that, you know, the stories that he was given, he
- 44:34was giving so many, you know, he's gonna, you know, I mean,
- 44:36it's appropriate. It's a Christian story, is he
- 44:38was getting so many Turtle. I mean, it's not like going
- 44:41family fortune. So, you know, you just, you
- 44:43know, thinking totally certain time, you know, it's like that.
- 44:46Why is a rat snake story? So good.
- 44:56Precious, I think at the beginning and that is is two
- 44:58times that kind of like we all, remember where with my say like
- 45:03that low tone and then it's like em, you know, we really wobbly
- 45:07timey. What is that?
- 45:08That is always hope and there's very little in between, there's
- 45:11no ambiguity in between and people people round, David
- 45:15Tennant, but David Tennant, have range.
- 45:17He did have range, he don't sound right, I found the David
- 45:21Tennant. I think I don't get me wrong if
- 45:23he's, he's better than studies. Brilliant.
- 45:26But I could keep the problem I have is that he takes so long to
- 45:29get there. I think that you know, yes
- 45:31Seasons. He kind of these between the
- 45:34brilliant and being really annoying you know.
- 45:37So I can be tedious Lang's I think is best summed up in
- 45:40Garlic's Manhattan. An evolution of the Daleks, he's
- 45:42brilliant in Daleks in Manhattan.
- 45:44Evolution of the Daleks not civilians.
- 45:47Like, yeah, I could and I can see that my feet would save
- 45:50assemblies is when he's all, like, for the entirety of series
- 45:53for, he is, yeah, like yeah, is beautiful.
- 45:56What was the most? He's taking so long to get
- 46:00there, but he's really about people, people criticize those
- 46:03specials, but Wars last, that's one of the best doctor
- 46:05performance. Most amount of days.
- 46:08I think that's what, when our youth when he's good, he's
- 46:10brilliant. You know, midnight Waters of
- 46:13Mars. They saw the end of time of
- 46:16these great. But really, I cut you off when
- 46:18you were talking about Christmas specials and what you like, yes,
- 46:21because you went, you talk about Only Fools and Horses not being
- 46:24about Christmas. So yeah.
- 46:26Do you? I think that's the same for
- 46:27Doctor Who it shouldn't be about Christmas.
- 46:29It should always be about Christmas, you know, I mean, why
- 46:32don't they go, you know, you know, so, you know, like the
- 46:35Bahamas or something, where it's Christmas, you know, do that,
- 46:38you know, something a bit different or, you know, all I
- 46:42could have one of those old-fashioned, rather than this
- 46:44Union. You know, what they call the
- 46:46things, you know, thing that, you know, or a treasure hunt,
- 46:49you know, do you think, you know, movies, they show on
- 46:52Christmas day but on exclusively about these things, but they can
- 46:56Thank, but it's Star Wars that every do you think there's a
- 47:01very Christmassy Christmas special?
- 47:03But works though, Nice Christmas.
- 47:06I think he's good last thing. Last Christmas is great.
- 47:09It's you know I mean it's very crispy and it's got that extra
- 47:13Edge it's got a little bit of darkness and also is that it's
- 47:16actually quite funny. I learned in super clever last
- 47:20Christmas. He's but yeah, it's pretty
- 47:21clever. And that is, you know, I think I
- 47:25think for me I think 2011 the end of 2011 to 2013.
- 47:29I think the me's office low point of any Sunny comes back
- 47:33fighting again in the first thing to go.
- 47:35At least he's alive. I think he comes up with some
- 47:37real real. Good stories that.
- 47:38But he famously says, that's really that serious 7 was where
- 47:42he was juggling. These massive like, Sherlock and
- 47:45Doctor Who his workers too much. He was essentially having
- 47:48something of a breakdown behind the scenes.
- 47:50Yeah. Because and it kind of is there
- 47:52on screen unfortunately. It's yeah, it's just too bad.
- 47:56A lot of excuses were in 50th anniversary year, you know,
- 48:00because you know, that's when you should be really, you know
- 48:02him Jaqueline gold, you know, and it's just hitting, you know,
- 48:07the bottom of the barrel, I can't help.
- 48:09But notice that we have spent the least amount of time talking
- 48:12about the doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe as we possibly can.
- 48:15But you know why that is there's no substance here, very sorry?
- 48:19I mean this stupid giant ants that room.
- 48:22I mean, What is that old? Our Helia is the Mark worth?
- 48:27Yeah, nice. Not very good.
- 48:30But I mean, like storage in symmetry going on here.
- 48:32Like, she's about to attack this phallic-shaped Tower.
- 48:36Yes, probably know, anymore. How is she driving that low?
- 48:41Like, okay, plausibly. How she driving that aren't?
- 48:45No idea. I mean, she's not really, maybe
- 48:47she drives, you know, Hearts fine.
- 48:50With that with our smelly. What about what he's got.
- 48:52One of those know that guy Don, Ho.
- 49:00And it's very, you know, it's raining acid.
- 49:02So shouldn't I can't be like fighting Kris.
- 49:06Okay, help me out here because I really don't know what was going
- 49:09on with the plot. I turned off by this point
- 49:11yesterday, so the acid rains coming down, the light is
- 49:16leaving the trees. Oh, I remember the trees are
- 49:21like fuel. They use them for fuel and and
- 49:24resolve this apparent. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:26For energy fuel. Yeah, that's right.
- 49:28And they have to have to try and make their way out and go go
- 49:32faster. Only way back home or something.
- 49:36You know what's a better trees, stroke?
- 49:38Environmental message, silence, library and Foresters are dead.
- 49:42Don't cut down the trees, although the shadows will get
- 49:45you. Yeah.
- 49:47Which is actually one of my favorite stories of you, who I
- 49:51think that is. You know, there are some
- 49:54annoying things about that. Like the ending where everything
- 49:56comes back to life, but often that I think is absolutely
- 49:59better. That is more folks.
- 50:01All of these a game, it's astonishing how it's a royal.
- 50:04Oh, is it like this is where I say?
- 50:06Like mafias, like the Chris Carter, from the X-Files of the
- 50:08Doctor Who Universe, because he can be terrific and Dreadful,
- 50:12you know? Yeah.
- 50:14It's, you know, I mean that, you know, these children trees,
- 50:18green dots. We don't walk, we coming onto
- 50:21this, all falls. what about like a canary, it And Sean's.
- 50:31See, but I can tell you and you could tell me every plot point
- 50:36from sit, your death inside out and back.
- 50:38Yeah, and that is an intricate plot.
- 50:40This is a simple plot a we don't have a bloody clue.
- 50:44I know, I know, he's just he's just random elements.
- 50:47Just kind of piece night. Making a really an appetizer.
- 50:50It's like making the most heavily used Christmas pudding.
- 50:53You just throw every random thing in the mix and hoping
- 50:56Instinct and he doesn't need to stay.
- 50:59Gee, you know, you do enjoy it. And it's just did you, did you
- 51:03hear what she just said? No, I didn't know what so he was
- 51:06like, do you dance? A really clever and she went, I
- 51:09know. Oh.
- 52:16In the right order I think Batman's Gold version of the
- 52:20theme is like, it sounds nothing.
- 52:22Like I thought you were comparing the doctor, the Widow,
- 52:25and the Wardrobe to the Morgan and wife's pitch there, and I
- 52:28was like, no, no, no, I can't wait to see how he makes this
- 52:32link. No, absolutely not.
- 52:35I mean genius. I mean I suppose is a good
- 52:40comparison though because you're looking at Peak television
- 52:42versus the trashiest for television possible.
- 52:45Yeah, absolutely. The yeah but the thing is you
- 52:48know you got big-name guests sizing both but unfortunately,
- 52:51they don't really get the opportunity to shine in this.
- 52:53They just you know say I know you need to feel it mad he's
- 53:00talking to the audience now you need some feel guys, it's
- 53:03Christmas and we want you to feel sad and happy.
- 53:07I know he's got a but I feel like he should have like, you
- 53:09know, a net tenaciously should not something about feeling than
- 53:13feeling is real kind of one of those kind of like CD values for
- 53:20that bit where the doctor kind of reaches out ourselves.
- 53:23So, out your environmental issues, it's happening all the
- 53:27time here. Oh no.
- 53:32This is where the dad comes back.
- 53:33Isn't it now? Yeah, that's some exotic runs
- 53:37from these little points. It's mr.
- 53:39Smith, this program quite well. Pointless, stick to pointless
- 53:54like well, he's mr. Smith as well.
- 53:56And I'll tell you what. In those things where he's
- 53:58bitching with canine, he's great.
- 54:01Yeah, again, he's completely wasted in about, you know, you
- 54:06don't get any sense of background to his character, you
- 54:08know, you just seem in an airplane and, you know, he's
- 54:11upset, you know, it's just, I think I absolutely know that was
- 54:17well, I think Mafia has his, like, idealized version of a
- 54:20family, like, being happier as a unit.
- 54:23That's that's not my life. That's not my family, my family
- 54:26are flawed dysfunctional. I've got a rusty Davis here of
- 54:31Of late. I don't think that's why I can't
- 54:33buy into any of these lovey-dovey shave off.
- 54:37It is to idealize the mean you know and not if not every
- 54:42family's is like that, you know, I mean, you need to be of any
- 54:47difference, you know, be, you know, rather than this, you
- 54:50know, this one, say, idealized family, it's just even.
- 54:55Like, even in Disney even Disney now is push.
- 55:01Pushing like dysfunctional families and you know that there
- 55:04are lots of different types of families, whereas this is just
- 55:08so sweet. This is another thing about the
- 55:18mafia arrow that these things Spitfires in bizarre, science
- 55:22fiction section of the victory of the Daleks.
- 55:24We're, and that was for another one going for a Vortex to kind
- 55:28of default. Period, dramas, you are they
- 55:32going to the, you know, both of the world wars or you going to
- 55:35be touring on alone? Yeah.
- 55:37And if either one of those things about another kind of,
- 55:40I'd like, you know, say what you will.
- 55:47It is, you know, definitely, you know that there are, there is a,
- 55:53you know, willingness to actually explore other
- 55:55historical Buick. Start World War, 1 2 and
- 55:58victoriana lung, you know, it's kind of like they took
- 56:00inspiration from all turns when change brilliant asparagus.
- 56:04Brilliant. So let alone seen better, kind
- 56:07of like going T but, you know, there are a voice in history and
- 56:12I know these this is literally operating.
- 56:14This is the yeah this is the love conquers all ending.
- 56:17Which is hard so much in this era.
- 56:20Now, I think what? But wait, wait.
- 56:22I think once once they could get away with it and it could be
- 56:26like, okay, that's fine, it's a bit.
- 56:29Oh Tweety. But the thing is, at the end of
- 56:31Night, Terrors at the end of closing time at the end of the
- 56:34launcher at the end of this and I'm just like, oh my god.
- 56:39Oh yeah. In the forest of the night, he
- 56:41got back pandorica, opens, big bang.
- 56:44You know, they're remembering back to life.
- 56:46I try and forget about In the forest of the night as much as I
- 56:49can do, you know, right? When I watched that episode, I
- 56:52text my partner at the time and the pre-title sequence and when
- 56:56this is gonna be amazing, like the whole of London's our forest
- 57:01and then at the end, I messaged him and I can't really repeat
- 57:04what I wrote on that message. But you know what?
- 57:11We haven't even got to the TV yet.
- 57:14If we don't, they don't know that the dad survived yet.
- 57:18Yeah. And I'm not a cynic John, I like
- 57:21a happy ending but this is too much, is too much.
- 57:26Yeah, I mean I am obviously, you know, I mean it's you know I
- 57:30mean I do the Christmas specials like you know, Voyage of the
- 57:33Damned, not everybody makes it, you prefer me.
- 57:36You prefer a massacre at Christmas.
- 57:38I because yeah, yeah, small sounds When a guy and the unit
- 57:51man, think it's a five cigarettes or there's almost a
- 57:54mass suicide. Maybe I'll hang out with Steven,
- 58:21Moffat Christmas. Tree verbalize, the prosecution
- 58:32against are I feel as if he will?
- 58:33Probably Erase Me from Doctor Who forever?
- 58:36Who raised you? But we both said in this
- 58:44commentary, several stories of his.
- 58:46The we adore, you know. So it's it's like Great ones
- 58:50have been saying, it's probably my all-time favorite new.
- 58:53Who also got the empty child. You've got silence in the
- 59:02library link. I'd Leslie.
- 59:07Why do you must question? I think that's the 11th hour.
- 59:11Yeah, I mean, there are many many great Steven other stories
- 59:13to be interested in my favorite episode of new who is Russell,
- 59:19T, Davies has heaven-sent which I think is midnight, which is
- 59:23not as, as experimental, you know, in a very different way.
- 59:27Yes, yeah. And it's both writers stripped
- 59:30back and contains and forced to just write not be smart about it
- 59:35just right. Eric, this is why I'm being in
- 59:37this, you know, he's this prostrated surround me and just
- 59:40make the best of it and they turn up absolutely gone.
- 59:44And it's brilliant. Unlike this, you know, alive
- 59:47again and he's it's like, you know, in a horrifying rough.
- 59:50You know, all the characters came back to life.
- 59:52Did you hear what he said on Christmas Day?
- 59:55How kill me. It's just exhausting drums for
- 1:00:06Miss. Probably take a Skinner.
- 1:00:07Probably thinking, what the hell did we sign up now?
- 1:00:10They're thinking quick. Let's get the paycheck and rum.
- 1:00:13Yeah, Take the Money and Run. Happy crying.
- 1:00:19John, happy, crying crying. Happy crying.
- 1:00:23Oh, very easy. Yeah.
- 1:00:27Can you happy fries? Eating happy cry.
- 1:00:29I like if I watch something equally, yeah, aren't terrible.
- 1:00:33A find the older. I get, you know, especially when
- 1:00:36using you never added some salt, just reduce me to a, you feel,
- 1:00:39you know, I was actually being in Doctor Who you should eat
- 1:00:47shit. Excuse me, he has been in
- 1:00:49doctor, he was mentioned in Dimensions In Time.
- 1:00:52I've yet, no, I in 2013. Well, I mean there will be drama
- 1:01:05Channel and every time I said Hills comes up, I think.
- 1:01:09Oh, it's Travis or, you know, all from the robots there and
- 1:01:13it's just like I keep expecting. So, we're were young too old
- 1:01:17baby. Boo.
- 1:01:18We've right. But did they do that a lot in
- 1:01:25Dimensions In Time? Some way and that you know, you
- 1:01:29should Probably should. Okay, I'm going to say another
- 1:01:32positive thing now. Yes.
- 1:01:35And this is a positive thing about new who against classic
- 1:01:38Who. Well I don't do this very often
- 1:01:42is I do like the fact that they very often have a coder and they
- 1:01:45wrap up the journey because he knew who there's a lot of just
- 1:01:48running off at the end and everything, like always but the
- 1:01:51some makers are just run off. They've tossed someone over a
- 1:01:54building and there's like, yeah, all right, bye.
- 1:01:58And it's like, okay, well, I don't Think that's going to be
- 1:02:00that he's got left back in a good place, whereas they bother
- 1:02:04to wrap up the emotional story lines here.
- 1:02:07Yeah, I think that's about a point.
- 1:02:09Yeah. I'm very very well.
- 1:02:11Like you say, a PIN to their credit.
- 1:02:13They actually do actually see, you know, right?
- 1:02:16Tighten the bow of the rapid, you know?
- 1:02:18And they and you don't want that whereas You know, we did some of
- 1:02:23the students. I just got all quite you saying
- 1:02:24something. You know, you know, you have to
- 1:02:27question whether doctors let them, you know, the rebels or is
- 1:02:32it a better place for them around having fun?
- 1:02:35I always think that about vengers are vowels because I
- 1:02:39don't think he's left them in to go dance.
- 1:02:41The governor is not particularly nice for out that.
- 1:02:44No no he's not no no. Okay.
- 1:02:51Oh yeah. And I think, I actually think
- 1:02:57they should have had Karen Gillan and Arthur darvill in
- 1:03:00these as companions. I think, actually supplements
- 1:03:03without their presence because, you know, imagine the key.
- 1:03:06So, just not really, not really enough.
- 1:03:10Really? I never thought I would say this
- 1:03:13because I really low, they me poems and I agree with you.
- 1:03:21Oh my God. No, I changed my mind.
- 1:03:23She's already ranting and she could be quiet, you know, over
- 1:03:32annoying and unlikable, but I think as time goes on, I think
- 1:03:36she actually has a lot better. My of the Karen Gillan face is
- 1:03:39really my objection to a new Pond.
- 1:03:41Is the Karen Gillan in interviews, is the most Charming
- 1:03:45likeable person. And for much of her run, a Amy
- 1:03:48Pond is not charming and likable.
- 1:03:50And I'm How could you take an actress who's naturally charming
- 1:03:54and make her not Charming? It's kind of like, you know,
- 1:03:56cop-calling bacon. So you know, he comes across
- 1:03:59very well with interviews. You know, he's likable charming
- 1:04:02and they stopped, making these stocks are quite unlike.
- 1:04:06So you think, well, they must be really good actors to actually,
- 1:04:10you know, so, you know, play something that's not that like
- 1:04:14to see how I quite like the restrainer this scene, because
- 1:04:17it's more restrained than some of the story, but it's still
- 1:04:20over. Here.
- 1:04:21Say they're not looking too much.
- 1:04:22I will be. So it's like yeah.
- 1:04:25You know, it's like really like in the in the Christmas Invasion
- 1:04:29where you just goes for Christmas dinner and they're
- 1:04:31seeing having a laugh and it's Lively.
- 1:04:33Yeah, yeah, and it's great for this again.
- 1:04:36So obvious, isn't it? I would have for the current
- 1:04:40getting would have been horrendous because she was in
- 1:04:42this hideous advert. It's time for BBC Christmas.
- 1:04:48I had all these very Speedy See Stars doing that awful song from
- 1:04:53Oliver it's a hard knock life for us.
- 1:05:08Extremely smog annoying. But yeah, they were they were
- 1:05:15just shopping about looking very uncomfortable and I would have
- 1:05:19thought they'd, you know, Karen get a little lenient.
- 1:05:21That's because, all right. Yeah, but look, it's is
- 1:05:24lingering on him touching the tear and looking at it.
- 1:05:28It's, it's obvious. Let him remember when you and it
- 1:05:35was really, it was really poignant.
- 1:05:38Yeah, the tears spoke for itself without him having to wipe it
- 1:05:42off and like shoving her face. How do you compare that to the
- 1:05:46end of the green deck? When we got some research, you
- 1:05:48know, Joe's party, you know, he doesn't have to stop crying, you
- 1:05:51know where his, you know, if I did that now you stop crying,
- 1:05:54you know, but it's, you know, they just had the coast of these
- 1:05:57face and it's so something done in His Brilliant and that, I
- 1:06:01find that genuine moving. I don't find that movie.
- 1:06:04So I find that just, you know, because it's been forced, you
- 1:06:07know, You were forced to cry. You know it's like your pry
- 1:06:12you're right. It doesn't work for me.
- 1:06:14Your wipe it away. Your look at it longingly like
- 1:06:19you all. Look at it forever.
- 1:06:32Did that movie? That was a Hollywood
- 1:06:34Blockbuster. I'll bet you read that scripture
- 1:06:36when this is really subtle compared to I've been doing on
- 1:06:39Doctor Who you know sorry please he's not the is not watch both
- 1:06:47of us who we do in the water it's just I think that's the
- 1:06:50main problem is just not something I'm going to I'm going
- 1:06:54to ask you two questions before we sign up for it.
- 1:06:58My first question is and I this is what I'm doing at the end of
- 1:07:02these and I need you to try and give me an answer.
- 1:07:05Okay, why should on the back of listening to this comment?
- 1:07:08SRI someone, go to their shelf and watch the doctor, the Widow
- 1:07:12and the Wardrobe. Oh my God.
- 1:07:24Why would anybody want to watch them?
- 1:07:26Well I mean obviously the guy on sweeter you know he found
- 1:07:31obviously he likes it. Is that your argument one person
- 1:07:36likes it so that one person should go and get it.
- 1:07:38Now that shelf yeah Brendan he likes this is for you.
- 1:07:43I think the idea I think the ideas There.
- 1:07:46But unfortunately they just don't come together.
- 1:07:48But if you're looking for something, you know, maybe Maybe
- 1:07:53kids might like you, I mean, if you're looking for a story that,
- 1:07:57you know, you youngsters would actually enjoy Christmas, then
- 1:08:00that would probably be a more severe because he's very kind of
- 1:08:03know, sort of, is pitch more towards, you know, young kids
- 1:08:07isn't it? Rather than, you know, a family
- 1:08:09audience. I don't see.
- 1:08:10Actually the inside of me. Oh God, I know, I need to
- 1:08:13rephrase that emotionally. Yeah, I am still a, an
- 1:08:20eight-year-old child. Yeah.
- 1:08:22Yeah. And he's not, he's not impressed
- 1:08:24with this. Okay, he's not impressed.
- 1:08:27So I don't know that welcoming help.
- 1:08:29Yeah, I mean a year old me would have wanted to see pyramid.
- 1:08:36I mean when I was eight years old East, go, you know, that's
- 1:08:38when I used to borrow books from the library and then, you know,
- 1:08:43the P dates there was on that was, you know, that was right up
- 1:08:45my street. They've always had story.
- 1:08:48I did that. You're definitely last time now.
- 1:08:50There's talk of you being a man, Listen cynic, you love the
- 1:08:56comedy. You like, you know, you were
- 1:08:58laughing. It's not like, you don't like,
- 1:09:00I'm like, yeah, exactly, yeah, it's got to be done.
- 1:09:05Well, you know, it's, you know, it's tough like, you know, it's
- 1:09:09quite a bit, you know, it's not obviously, on the play.
- 1:09:11It's not obviously over baby. You know, it's actually quite
- 1:09:14subtle and funny and there is genuinely, you know,
- 1:09:18laugh-out-loud funny, whereas, this is trying too hard and it
- 1:09:21doesn't impress me into At all, it's just very obvious sight
- 1:09:25gags. Like the I know that Titian when
- 1:09:27you have to repeat a gag over and over again, that is not
- 1:09:31good. I think it has the worst example
- 1:09:34of your more Rusty than said look, is there is what we're not
- 1:09:37going off to alien planets. We're not going to Planet Zog
- 1:09:40because it's just boring and no one's going to be investigating.
- 1:09:43This is like the ultimate Planet Zog.
- 1:09:46It is the ultimate Journey song, isn't it?
- 1:09:47And it's just, it's not memorable, you know, always a
- 1:09:50Christmas world for the right way trees.
- 1:09:53And, you know, you know, you know, back at least skies and
- 1:09:57all the back when it's our last year in Christmas Carol, and
- 1:10:00we're going to do it again and actually, all it Christmas in
- 1:10:03Time of the Doctor. I'm surprised that we didn't
- 1:10:17like by the end of his era. We didn't have like the
- 1:10:19constellation of Christmas and it's like there's holes.
- 1:10:23A load of Christmas planets and that's where these are moving
- 1:10:26set to rip off the Vicar of Dibley
- 1:10:41the Great Plague. Typical Isis is ravaging the
- 1:10:45system. Okay?
- 1:10:48So my second question to you is this because we have we have
- 1:10:51been Okay, thing throughout this name me your top five Christmas
- 1:10:58specials. Like so where, where would you
- 1:11:01go to watch a Christmas special? Okay, well, I think my favorite
- 1:11:06would be, I think Christmas Invasion then Last Christmas, I
- 1:11:10think that's really good. I like the first game to be
- 1:11:12written some actual isos, we just made on laughter.
- 1:11:15I think that is really a really fun Christmas special about it
- 1:11:19being too syrupy or, you know, Central City.
- 1:11:22I think I get it's the balance, just right?
- 1:11:24And it is actually quite funny Isis.
- 1:11:26So I really like another one that, you know, it's not
- 1:11:31famillies not to the stereo because they're not doing
- 1:11:34something that's obviously, Christmassy.
- 1:11:36Okay, it's actually super hero and I think that really works.
- 1:11:40Is again, it's very much a point from its Li is there, but it.
- 1:11:43Yeah, and it's called he's very often when they lick probably
- 1:11:47do. Comedy is great.
- 1:11:48Yeah, I think, you know, he's not the greatest comedian, I
- 1:11:51think. So, what I got here, We've got
- 1:11:53Christmas Invasion. Last Christmas, dr.
- 1:11:55Sarah, hello. You got one more anytime
- 1:12:00anytime. Oh my God, I love end of time as
- 1:12:02well. Yeah, alright be in the time I
- 1:12:05think he's got explores but you know very very some really don't
- 1:12:08make sound thinking for Knox I think is one of the best ever
- 1:12:11twists in got to never. You know it's not you know, the
- 1:12:14master of a the it's just burning creeping in the phone.
- 1:12:18Oh my God, you want to do sentiments sensible.
- 1:12:23I've had issues about the some creative choices in the end of
- 1:12:26time, but in terms of emotion, I don't think I am battered and
- 1:12:30bruised, more than in that second half.
- 1:12:34Anytime it burner. Crickets Cry.
- 1:12:36Yeah. Like right.
- 1:12:37But it's when it's places. See I would, I was compared to
- 1:13:04this. That's understated though.
- 1:13:06Like some of that. It's one of those things.
- 1:13:08Yeah, yeah. And also all grown up actually,
- 1:13:11I think that's, you know, the problem is this is feature you
- 1:13:13kidding level, whereas the end of time is more, you know, it's
- 1:13:16red, upsetting Heats, you know, it's got elements.
- 1:13:19That all the family would enjoy. Yeah.
