- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:20Happy Tuesday. It was a public holiday here in
- 0:23New South Wales, Australia, where I live yesterday and
- 0:27taking one day off a mini scroll, literally so much
- 0:31happened. So I have, I don't know, I think
- 0:335 or 6 stories for you guys. So we need to just get right
- 0:36into it because we have a lot to talk about.
- 0:38So the first story, obviously we need to talk about how US Vice
- 0:42President Kamala Harris was on Call Her Daddy yesterday.
- 0:46So this is like the biggest news in podcasting in a long time.
- 0:51It's such a huge moment for Alex and it is kind of interesting
- 0:56how it is further positioning her.
- 0:59I think this is kind of the strategy of her team, further
- 1:02positioning her as like Gen. Z's Oprah or like Barbara
- 1:05Walters. It's a very interesting move,
- 1:07but I think it was a good one. So I listened and I thought that
- 1:11the interview was good. Obviously Kamala is so engaging
- 1:17and I actually personally find Alex pretty engaging.
- 1:19I know she gets a lot of heat. I know people don't love her
- 1:23interviewing skills and I totally get it.
- 1:25But I think for what call her daddy is, I don't see it as, you
- 1:31know, a platform where you're going to get like that hard
- 1:33hitting journalism or like a truly valuable interview.
- 1:37I mean, sometimes, sometimes that happens.
- 1:39And I actually think this was a valuable interview, don't get me
- 1:41wrong. But I think in terms of like,
- 1:42you're not going to pull things out of people that other
- 1:45journalists or other interviews haven't done before.
- 1:48But it's just a place where celebrities, influencers and
- 1:52obviously now politicians can go and have a platform in front of
- 1:57millions of mostly young women. And, you know, young women, they
- 2:02don't watch, you know, we're not like watching.
- 2:04We're as if I'm like in that 20 something demographic.
- 2:07I feel so old, but you know what I mean?
- 2:09Like you're not going to reach them in TV interviews, in radio
- 2:14interviews. So I think it makes total sense
- 2:17that politicians would start using podcasts and call her
- 2:20Daddy is the biggest one for young women in the US Plus,
- 2:23Trump has done a few podcasts. He did Theo Von's podcast, He
- 2:27did Logan Paul's podcast. Those are both like influencers,
- 2:30you know? So I think this is really
- 2:32showing the future of media, and it's showing that politicians
- 2:37know that they can't rely on traditional outlets anymore to
- 2:41reach those young voters. So I thought it was a great
- 2:44move. And I think the interview was to
- 2:46the point. It was short and snappy.
- 2:49I thought it gave what it intended to give.
- 2:52I feel like there are probably a lot of women in the US, young
- 2:55women, particularly white young women who grew up in very
- 2:58conservative spaces that have been like quietly questioning
- 3:03over the last two years and are possibly on the cusp now.
- 3:08And I mean, in general, your 20s are a time to explore things
- 3:13outside of your family values, to form your own individual
- 3:17identity. That is just typically like what
- 3:19happens when you leave home, right when you're in your late
- 3:23teens, early 20s and you enter adulthood.
- 3:25But I think particularly everything that's been
- 3:27happening, the kind of war on woman's bodily autonomy in the
- 3:31US over the last couple of years, I imagine there are a lot
- 3:35of women who are quietly questioning, especially in that
- 3:38younger demographic. So I do feel like for those
- 3:41women call her daddy. Is this like neutral and like
- 3:44palatable place where they can almost privately dabble in this
- 3:49exploration? It was definitely very high
- 3:51level, but I think it was perfect for Alex's audience.
- 3:55And I don't know, I genuinely enjoyed listening to it.
- 3:58So I thought the interview was great.
- 4:00But I would love to hear from you guys, especially if you're
- 4:02American. I'm not American, I'm Canadian,
- 4:04I live in Australia, so obviously these things don't
- 4:06really impact me in the same way.
- 4:08So I would love to hear from you guys, you know, if you are
- 4:11American, what you thought of this interview.
- 4:13OK, the next story that I have for you guys is we're going to
- 4:16talk about Tik Tok's Rug Girl saga.
- 4:19So over the weekend, a woman named Katie Santry went viral
- 4:23when she posted a series about finding a rug buried in her
- 4:26yard. Katie first started the series
- 4:28by saying that she was worried her house was haunted because,
- 4:31like, things were moving around her desk area.
- 4:35And then she said, you guys think this has anything to do
- 4:38with the rug that I found buried in my yard?
- 4:42She then took viewers on this journey in real time to figure
- 4:44out what the rug was doing buried in her yard.
- 4:48The audience basically said, like, call the police.
- 4:50So she did. And the police in a, you know,
- 4:55in other words, essentially said we're not going to investigate
- 4:57this further. So then Katie was like, OK, my
- 4:59friends and I are going to dig up this rug.
- 5:02We need to figure out what's going on.
- 5:04Obviously, I should have mentioned this before, but like,
- 5:06obviously people were like, OK, if there's like a rug, like a
- 5:09carpet buried in your yard, it is possible that there is a body
- 5:13wrapped up inside it, right? That's what people were
- 5:15thinking. So Katie was going to, I guess,
- 5:18dig it up herself with her friends.
- 5:20And I'm not sure if it was because of the media attention
- 5:22because I do know some articles started coming out about it and
- 5:25stuff like that. But the police ended up
- 5:27contacting her and we're like, never mind, we're actually going
- 5:29to come and investigate. They brought two dogs and both
- 5:32dogs alerted that like something suspicious was going on with the
- 5:35rug. And she live streamed this on
- 5:38TikTok. Like she live streamed when the
- 5:39police were there. So then the police, you know,
- 5:42got the rug, took it for testing and they have since confirmed, I
- 5:46believe it was yesterday or the day before, they confirmed 2
- 5:48various news outlets that there was actually no human or animal
- 5:52remains that were found on the rug.
- 5:54So now I've been seeing comments of people being like, apparently
- 5:58there was a pond in her yard at one point.
- 6:01And you know, when you put some infrastructure like that in a
- 6:04lawn, there's usually that like mat or mat's probably not the
- 6:07right word, but like the sack, I don't know.
- 6:10I don't know, landscaping, but you know, like that goes on the
- 6:13dirt and then you put the thing on top of it, like the pond or
- 6:17whatever you're placing. So people were like, maybe that
- 6:19was for the pond. Other people are now questioning
- 6:23if this was all a hoax because apparently now she's been
- 6:25talking about how she's like famous.
- 6:27She went from I think she had 2000 followers to like millions
- 6:31now within like 4 days. And apparently she's been
- 6:33talking about how she's famous and she's been talking about the
- 6:35money that she's been making from all of this in the Crater
- 6:37fund. I don't think this was a hoax.
- 6:40I don't know, maybe I'm just naive.
- 6:43I don't think this was a hoax. I think it was just something
- 6:47that she started, you know, like posting about.
- 6:49And I think it kind of got really big and got away from
- 6:51her. I do think there's some kind of
- 6:54bizarre ethical lines that maybe were crossed when she was like
- 6:58live streaming the police with the dogs and it felt like we
- 7:03were following like, you know, a real life true Crime Story.
- 7:07But the way it was presented was not, I would say in my opinion,
- 7:11like that respectfully, especially if there was
- 7:13obviously given we thought that there was possibly a body in
- 7:17that rug. That being said, I don't think
- 7:20it was a hoax, but it definitely had users captivated for like
- 7:25four straight days. So the next right that I have
- 7:28for you guys is another moment that went viral on TikTok.
- 7:31It was a New York City restaurant like Cake Saga.
- 7:34I'm sure you guys saw this one as well.
- 7:36But creator Ryan Nordheimer went viral on the weekend when he
- 7:39shared a story time about how he baked this beautiful cake for
- 7:42his friend's birthday. And the restaurant that they
- 7:45went to for his birthday dinner ate half the cake.
- 7:49So he said that they were served really small pieces of the cake.
- 7:52And then when they went to leave, they asked for the rest
- 7:54of the cake. And the restaurant was like, oh,
- 7:56there was none left. And he knew that was not true.
- 7:58So then he basically went on TikTok and was like, the
- 8:00restaurant obviously ate half of my cake.
- 8:02Like the employees in the kitchen ate my cake.
- 8:05And the restaurant saw this because it was going viral.
- 8:08Everyone was like losing their minds.
- 8:10And the restaurant contacted him and he didn't name the
- 8:13restaurant, but it everybody kind of uncovered or like
- 8:16figured out who he was talking about.
- 8:18So then they started getting bombed, bombarded all over
- 8:20social media. So then they contacted him and
- 8:22said they checked security footage and the cake was not
- 8:26eaten by any staff members. So they basically assumed that
- 8:29what happened was like, it was a busy Saturday night.
- 8:32Obviously working in hospitality is like absolutely crazy.
- 8:35I'm sure a busy New York City restaurant on a Saturday night,
- 8:37it probably doesn't get much more chaotic than that.
- 8:40And so they assume it was just kind of like, forgotten about
- 8:43and ended up getting, like, thrown out.
- 8:45So he apologized essentially for, like, accusing them of
- 8:49eating his cake. And then he also said that the
- 8:51restaurant to make nice, offered him a meal for two for free to
- 8:56say sorry. The next story that I have for
- 8:58you guys is that Demi Lovato has helped pass legislation in
- 9:01California that protects child influencers.
- 9:04This is huge news. You guys know, I'm so passionate
- 9:07about like, keeping your kids offline and child protection in
- 9:11the influencer creator space. This is so exciting.
- 9:15So Demi Lovato met with the California governor on Thursday
- 9:18to have two bills signed that will protect child influencers
- 9:22legally and financially. And if for some reason you have
- 9:24no idea how Demi Lovato is involved in this, it's because,
- 9:27you know, she's like a big advocate for child protection in
- 9:31the entertainment industry because she was a child star.
- 9:33And obviously, we know she's had a very tumultuous life because
- 9:38largely because of that. Similar to like, Selena Gomez,
- 9:40right? Like a lot of mental health
- 9:41issues. Demi's had a lot of addiction
- 9:44issues that she's been very open with.
- 9:46You know, she dated Wilma Valderrama when she was, what
- 9:49was she, like, 17 and he was 29 or maybe even younger.
- 9:53Like, it was just, she just, like, went through it as a child
- 9:56star. So she's passionate about
- 9:58helping protect young people in the entertainment industry.
- 10:01So this is obviously the next step.
- 10:02The governor said, quote, a lot has changed since Hollywood's
- 10:06early days. But here in California, our
- 10:08laser focus on protecting kids from exploitation remains the
- 10:12same. In old Hollywood, child actors
- 10:14were exploited in 2024. It's now child influencers Today
- 10:19that modern exploitation ends through 2 new laws to protect
- 10:22young influencers on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other
- 10:26social media platforms. OK, so this is a direct quote
- 10:29from CNN so I get the bills right.
- 10:32So quote, One bill signed by Newsom establishes financial and
- 10:36legal protections for minors featured and monetized online
- 10:39content by mandating their parent or guardian set aside a
- 10:42percentage of their earnings and trust accounts.
- 10:45The other bill expands California's decades old Coogan
- 10:49law to include minors who are employed as content creators on
- 10:53online platforms. So if you guys don't know what
- 10:55the Coogan law is, it is named after an actor called Jackie
- 10:59Coogan, who was, I think he was Uncle Fester in the original
- 11:02Addams Family, but he was a child star.
- 11:04And when he turned 18, he realized that I think it was
- 11:07like $50 million or like some crazy amount of money that he
- 11:11was supposed to inherit had been squandered by his family.
- 11:15This is all from memory, but I believe he sued them.
- 11:17And then the Coogan law came into place where it is, I
- 11:21believe 30% of the child's money that they make has to go into a
- 11:27blocked fund, which is called the Coogan Fund.
- 11:31OK, just fact checked, it is 15%, not 30%.
- 11:34So I guess the Coogan law now also applies to child
- 11:36influencers. And everyone is like, let's see
- 11:40how long it takes for the family vloggers to flee LA.
- 11:44We are going to get a slew of videos being like, we're moving.
- 11:49And everyone's going to go to, like, I don't know, Tennessee or
- 11:51something. OK.
- 11:53And the last story that I have for you guys is that Mama Taught
- 11:57is facing backlash on TikTok for seemingly spreading
- 12:00misinformation about Hurricane Helene relief efforts.
- 12:04In a now deleted video, Mama Taught, whose real name is
- 12:07Ophelia Nichols, shared what many of her audience has deemed,
- 12:11quote, dangerous conspiracy theories related to the
- 12:14Hurricane Helene relief efforts. If you're not familiar, Mama
- 12:17Taught is a beloved creator with over 14,000,000 followers across
- 12:20her two accounts. So Mama Taught made this video
- 12:23where she was expressing how upset and concerned she was for
- 12:27the victims of this hurricane. And in it she basically said
- 12:31like no one's doing anything about it.
- 12:33So this is directly from the Daily dot.
- 12:35They write quote. Nichol has been accused of
- 12:37leaning into potentially dangerous conspiracy theories to
- 12:40do with the response to the devastating storm, many of which
- 12:44have become prevalent in particular sects of right
- 12:47leaning Republican voters. In the wake of the storm,
- 12:50conspiratorial thoughts like those Nichols allegedly shared
- 12:53have been circulating online. Many seem to claim that the US
- 12:57federal government, which is currently Democrat, is denying
- 13:00Republican victims of Hurricane Helene relief and is diverting
- 13:04funds to more generally Democratic areas.
- 13:07So I think the response to Mama Taught people have a lot of
- 13:11people have felt confused because there's a lot of videos
- 13:13like your whole For You page is just people being like, I can't
- 13:16believe it or like I called it or whatever.
- 13:18Like, you know, the backlash against Mama taught, everybody's
- 13:20kind of talking about it. And then if you are not
- 13:23following kind of what's happening in US politics that
- 13:26closely or if you just, I don't know, feel like you also have a
- 13:30lot of empathy for the victims, you might see her video and be
- 13:33like, what the fuck? Like, why is she getting, you
- 13:36know, backlash for this video? So mom and Todd has now
- 13:38responded to the backlash. She said in that video, I never
- 13:41said anything about politics, FEMA, money, the government,
- 13:44presidents. I never said anything about
- 13:46those things. None of that.
- 13:47I just expressed how frustrated and sad and angry I was that the
- 13:50victims have had to go through this.
- 13:53So yes, those are the biggest stories that happened this
- 13:57weekend and while I was off yesterday.
- 14:00Thank you guys so much for listening.
