- 0:01There is a vast difference between the goals of the
- 0:04ordinary human individual and those who have chosen to take up
- 0:08spiritual sadhna. This difference defines the way
- 0:12they respectively look at things, including the various
- 0:15normal and natural functions of human life.
- 0:20For the ordinary individual, it turns out that their lives are
- 0:24very much defined by their interests, their careers, their
- 0:28relationships, and the various forms of enjoyment they seek.
- 0:34For the spiritual seeker, however, all of these things, so
- 0:38important to the normal life of the world, take on a much lesser
- 0:42importance, and in some cases they are seen as impediments or
- 0:47obstacles to the practice when they draw the attention and
- 0:51energy away from the focus. Fixating on food, fulfillment of
- 0:58a particular ambition or desire, or the lure and enjoyment of sex
- 1:03act as distractions for the spiritual seeker.
- 1:07For such an individual it is not a matter of sin or virtue, but
- 1:12of concentration of conscious force.
- 1:15To Pasia for the spiritual realization Sri Aurobindo
- 1:21observes. Quote as to the sexual impulse.
- 1:25Regard it not as something sinful and horrible and
- 1:29attractive at the same time, but as a mistake and wrong movement
- 1:33of the lower nature. Reject it entirely, not by
- 1:38struggling with it, but by drawing back from it, detaching
- 1:42yourself and refusing your consent.
- 1:46Look at it as something not your own, but imposed on you by a
- 1:50force of nature outside you. Refuse all consent to the
- 1:55imposition. If anything in your vital
- 1:58consents insist on that part of you withdrawing its consent.
- 2:03Call in the divine force to help you in your withdrawal and
- 2:07refusal. If you can do this quietly and
- 2:12resolutely and patiently, in the end your inner will will prevail
- 2:18against the habit of the outer nature.
