- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome to Disgraceland After Party.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland Bonus episode, a little thing we
- 0:32Speaker 1: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:35Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:38Speaker 1: to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to
- 0:40Speaker 1: the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt. On
- 0:44Speaker 1: this episode, we are talking about Arrowsmith, that time you
- 0:48Speaker 1: met that famous dude from that band, more Hohoskerdoo and
- 0:52Speaker 1: more Fiddler or is it Fidlar? That glorious year of
- 0:55Speaker 1: music nineteen ninety four, and of course your voicemails, text
- 0:59Speaker 1: dms more and is always a whole lot of rosy.
- 1:03Speaker 1: All right, disc goes, let's get into it. One two,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Oh my god, and welcome to the Disgraceland Big Bonus
- 1:20Speaker 1: ten inch episode, where we are talking about, among other things,
- 1:23Speaker 1: this week's full episode of Aerosmith. I'm gonna like hate
- 1:28Speaker 1: relationship with Aerosmith. Guys, I never loved Aerosmith. In fact,
- 1:32Speaker 1: as far back as I can remember, something about the
- 1:35Speaker 1: band just drove me nuts, some sort of classic rock
- 1:39Speaker 1: indicator of lameness type dog whistle. But then again, there
- 1:43Speaker 1: are Aerosmith songs that I kind of really like. I
- 1:46Speaker 1: don't love, I guess some I love. Sweet Emotion is
- 1:50Speaker 1: just fucking an incredible, incredible song. But when I was
- 1:54Speaker 1: a young metalhead, you know, I had Aerosmith's Greatest Hits cassette,
- 1:58Speaker 1: bought it at City Hall Music on High Street, and
- 2:00Speaker 1: Clinton Mass wore the shit out of that tape, Kings
- 2:03Speaker 1: and Queens, Guillotines, all that loved it. But once punk
- 2:07Speaker 1: rock hit me, and then later in high school and
- 2:10Speaker 1: in college, when I started developed taste, my own taste
- 2:13Speaker 1: and forged my own identity through music and through the
- 2:15Speaker 1: music that I consumed, Arrowsmith was out. They were just
- 2:19Speaker 1: too lame in my eyes. It didn't matter how cool
- 2:22Speaker 1: Joe Perry was, Stephen Tyler was too much of a cheeseball,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and I could not get with them. Even if permanent
- 2:27Speaker 1: vacation gave me heavy nostalgia vibes for hanging out in
- 2:30Speaker 1: Mary Young's basement and playing Spin the Bottle, it didn't matter.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Arrowsmith wasn't and still isn't my bag. I like to
- 2:38Speaker 1: think it's because of the music, but perhaps there's another reason,
- 2:42Speaker 1: because of the cheesiness of the band. It's something more.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And I got to tell you this story. All right, Arrowsmith,
- 2:49Speaker 1: as you know, is now doing or they're getting set
- 2:51Speaker 1: to do a farewell tour this year, and they're ending
- 2:53Speaker 1: the tour at the Boston Garden on New Year's Eve.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's because for years back in the day, the band
- 2:59Speaker 1: would do these annual or semi annual or pretty regular
- 3:03Speaker 1: at least done or how often they didn't, but they
- 3:05Speaker 1: seem to always be doing these New Year's Eve shows
- 3:07Speaker 1: or end of the year runs at the Boston Garden.
- 3:10Speaker 1: When I was fifteen years old, I was offered tickets
- 3:12Speaker 1: to one of these shows. This was pump Era Erosmith,
- 3:15Speaker 1: And if I'm being honest, that record isn't that bad.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's still cheese, but it's not like the imported, super
- 3:19Speaker 1: stinky kind of cheese. It's not the super processed, sliced
- 3:22Speaker 1: American cheese either. It's more like a solid hunk of
- 3:24Speaker 1: yellow cheddar you get past you on a cheese played
- 3:26Speaker 1: at a really boring party, but a party you're still
- 3:28Speaker 1: hanging around at because the vibe is like, oh, shit,
- 3:30Speaker 1: that dude Steven next to the bar. He's kind of
- 3:32Speaker 1: fucking crazy. He might lose a shit and go into
- 3:33Speaker 1: a cocaine seizure at any moment. But I digress, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: I did that little cheese bit there to annoy all
- 3:39Speaker 1: the people who write to me and ask me what
- 3:41Speaker 1: it is with cheese and me? And the episode is,
- 3:44Speaker 1: why do you mention cheese in every episode? Why do
- 3:45Speaker 1: you talk about your relo tron YadA, YadA, YadA. Just
- 3:47Speaker 1: fucking with you, guys. But back to my fifteen year
- 3:50Speaker 1: old self and Erosmith. I got invited to one of
- 3:53Speaker 1: these New Year's Eve Arrowsmith concerts at the Boston Garden,
- 3:55Speaker 1: the old Boston Garden, by the way, by a friend
- 3:57Speaker 1: of my dad's who was a writer for Billboard magazine,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Uncle Dave. He wasn't my uncle, but we just called
- 4:03Speaker 1: him that fifteen year old me. I'm fully into New
- 4:07Speaker 1: York and Boston hardcore at the time, Peg Jeans, Jordan's
- 4:09Speaker 1: Champion sweats Here at Flat Top. When I'm not listening
- 4:12Speaker 1: to hardcore music, I'm listening to Public Enemy and NWA.
- 4:15Speaker 1: My look was like Irish thug meets an extra from
- 4:18Speaker 1: Do the Right Thing. My point though, is that there
- 4:21Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of daylight in my steas at that
- 4:24Speaker 1: time for love and a fucking elevator, but free show
- 4:28Speaker 1: with a writer from Billboard magazine who was there to
- 4:31Speaker 1: review the show and thus had backstage access, So you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I wasn't stupid. I was in if for no other
- 4:38Speaker 1: reason than the experience. So we get there. Seats are awesome,
- 4:41Speaker 1: Doug Fluti is sitting right in front of me. That
- 4:43Speaker 1: blew me away. Arrosmith plays and they were great. They
- 4:46Speaker 1: were fucking great. We go backstage after the show and
- 4:50Speaker 1: it's pretty lame, but it's totally exciting at the same time.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Lots of food that I didn't want to eat, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: yellowhunks of cheese and the like, and lots of people
- 4:57Speaker 1: waiting around, no band, no band, and the band's not there,
- 5:01Speaker 1: just a bunch of people hanging around, looking, looking at
- 5:03Speaker 1: each other, feeling awkward. Finally Steven Tyler comes out. All right,
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's him, He's right there, and he's immediately like swarmed
- 5:11Speaker 1: by people, most of them young kids like me, younger kids,
- 5:15Speaker 1: some really young, some teenagers, but all of them with
- 5:18Speaker 1: their parents. So I join in the fray as they're
- 5:21Speaker 1: all trying to meet the singer for Aerosmith. Okay, but
- 5:24Speaker 1: I don't have an adult with me. But you know,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I'm cool. I'm fifteen. I'm basically Chuck Dye in my mind.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And who the fuck is Steven Tyler anyways, but just
- 5:33Speaker 1: some dude from the cell Shore or New Hampshire or whatever.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So I don't need an adult because yeah, man, fuck Arrowsmith.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But still I want to meet Arrowsmith. I want to
- 5:40Speaker 1: meet the guy. I'm starstruck despite myself, all right, just
- 5:43Speaker 1: like all these little shits that are surrounding him, with
- 5:45Speaker 1: their polite parents shepherding them in introductions with Steven Tyler. Okay,
- 5:50Speaker 1: so we're in like picture of this like horseshoe circle
- 5:52Speaker 1: around Steven Tyler backstage, me and all these kids in
- 5:56Speaker 1: their parents and the dude i'm with, the writer from Billboard,
- 5:58Speaker 1: could give a shit. He's at the bar or something,
- 6:00Speaker 1: which I can't blame him before if I'm being honest.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But the point is I've got no one there. I've
- 6:04Speaker 1: got no adult with me to introduce me to Steven Tyler,
- 6:07Speaker 1: unlike all these other kids, and Steven Tyler's making the
- 6:10Speaker 1: rounds on the semi circle, shaking hands, and he's doing so,
- 6:14Speaker 1: shaking hands with all these kids as he's introduced to
- 6:17Speaker 1: them by their parents. Hey, Stephen, great show. This is
- 6:19Speaker 1: my son Billy. Hey, Steve, an awesome show. Thanks for
- 6:21Speaker 1: taking the time to meet my daughter Jessica. You know,
- 6:24Speaker 1: but I've got no adult again, no one with me.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So Steven meets the kid next to me, looks at me,
- 6:28Speaker 1: takes a beat. I freeze. No adult introduces me, and
- 6:32Speaker 1: Stephen just moves on to the next kid to my left,
- 6:37Speaker 1: who was introduced by his parent, skips me, and I
- 6:41Speaker 1: look like a fifteen year old flat top haven't want
- 6:43Speaker 1: to be who just got dissed by a hunky yellow
- 6:45Speaker 1: cheese and that I didn't want to meet really in
- 6:48Speaker 1: the first place, I didn't want to fucking be there.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I was humiliated. So is that why I hate Aerosmith?
- 6:54Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think. So Uncle Dave nowhere
- 6:57Speaker 1: to be found. I slump over to the corner of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the room. I must have looked extra pathetic because out
- 7:03Speaker 1: of nowhere I get asked by the super tall dude
- 7:06Speaker 1: who's just standing there if I liked the show, And
- 7:09Speaker 1: of course, smart ass in me says no, the guy smiles,
- 7:14Speaker 1: says he didn't like it either. And it was Tom Hamilton,
- 7:17Speaker 1: the bass player for Aerosmith, and we had a brief
- 7:19Speaker 1: moment and he must have seen me. I don't know
- 7:23Speaker 1: if he saw what happened or I just looked fucking
- 7:26Speaker 1: sad and pathetic or something. But that little smart ass
- 7:29Speaker 1: smile of his, and you know, him allowing me to
- 7:33Speaker 1: be a little punk. It it made my night, save
- 7:35Speaker 1: my night for me. And you know, that's in a
- 7:37Speaker 1: nutshell what Aerosmith has always been to me. On the
- 7:41Speaker 1: one hand, they let me down always. There's always something
- 7:44Speaker 1: for me not to like, as represented by my encounter
- 7:47Speaker 1: with Steven Tyler. But I'm talking about in their music.
- 7:49Speaker 1: There's always something I don't like. And then again, there's
- 7:50Speaker 1: always something that I do like, something that's real and authentic.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And that's the Tom Hamilton side of it. I guess
- 7:56Speaker 1: from this story. Six month seven nine oh six three eight,
- 8:00Speaker 1: Who are the rock stars you've met? And did they
- 8:02Speaker 1: let you down or did they pick you up? Leave
- 8:04Speaker 1: me a voicemail, send me a text, Tell me your
- 8:06Speaker 1: rockstar encounter stories. I'm back in the flash, all right,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know the drill six one seven nine oh six
- 8:24Speaker 1: six six three eight to send a text or leave
- 8:26Speaker 1: a voicemail like this dude from the eight one.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Oh, Jake, what's up? I just heard you talking about
- 8:34Speaker 3: Booster dude and I looked him up and that was
- 8:37Speaker 3: a really good recommendation. That's like right up my brothers
- 8:40Speaker 3: and like all my close friends are. That's like our
- 8:42Speaker 3: five of music. I just never heard of them, but
- 8:44Speaker 3: we are super into Fiddler and really get down with it,
- 8:48Speaker 3: you know, I say, dog likes a risk. I wanted
- 8:52Speaker 3: to recommend that you maybe check out the Growlers if
- 8:55Speaker 3: you haven't already. My brother and I've seen them live
- 8:58Speaker 3: in Detroit where we're from, and also kind of going
- 9:01Speaker 3: with the Hooster Dues. They're the Violent Times is really awesome.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I actually watching that concert with my mom and we
- 9:07Speaker 3: rocked out hard because like The Violent Times is a
- 9:09Speaker 3: super super talented group of dudes. They really play a
- 9:13Speaker 3: lot of instruments and they put on a really great show.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And the Growlers just have a great like stage presence
- 9:19Speaker 3: in five and good like party bands, so really good
- 9:22Speaker 3: like Surf Aaron, but they're like kind of a newer band,
- 9:25Speaker 3: but they're actually not together anymore so yeah, a couple
- 9:27Speaker 3: of cool recommendations and yeah, keep it going rock and roller,
- 9:32Speaker 3: all right.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Awesome voicemail, man, Thank you, Stoked that you went and
- 9:36Speaker 1: checked out Who's could do? And stoked you and your
- 9:37Speaker 1: brother are any of them? Love that you made the
- 9:39Speaker 1: connection to Fiddler And is it Fiddler or Fiddler? Hit
- 9:43Speaker 1: me back let me know because I don't know, because yeah, man,
- 9:45Speaker 1: fucking dude, life's a risk for sure. Definitely going to
- 9:49Speaker 1: check out the Growlers on your recommendation and on the
- 9:51Speaker 1: violent Fems. I saw them back in the day. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: might have been fifteen as well, just like Erosmith at
- 9:56Speaker 1: an Earth Day concert and they fucking owned fuck Bro Stadium,
- 10:00Speaker 1: just as this tiny little three piece. They were awesome,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and we had crappy seats. We were like, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the practice field or whatever next door. We were
- 10:09Speaker 1: so far back. I don't even remember how what the
- 10:11Speaker 1: seats were like, but it was bad. And these were
- 10:13Speaker 1: these tiny little specks of people, this little three piece
- 10:16Speaker 1: playing acoustic instruments, and they kicked the ass in this
- 10:19Speaker 1: huge stadium. They were awesome. Your mom is good taste, dude.
- 10:22Speaker 1: All right, Let's check out this voicemail from Courtney in
- 10:24Speaker 1: the nine three seven.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Hi, Jake, is Courtney from the nine three seven. First off,
- 10:29Speaker 4: I owe you an apology for hating on you for
- 10:31Speaker 4: loving the Beef. I'm over it, but yes, please, hooker
- 10:35Speaker 4: do because my tock rock let's say how long, is
- 10:40Speaker 4: limited to like gg Allen and the Ramones and the
- 10:44Speaker 4: misfits in the sex Pistols. So I would love to
- 10:48Speaker 4: see this from a different angle. And you're totally the
- 10:51Speaker 4: guy for that. All right, keep doing what you're doing.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Rock and rolla.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Baby, Courtney, Don't hate love. Love love is the it's
- 11:00Speaker 1: don't you know that? And I'm unclear. I couldn't make
- 11:03Speaker 1: it out from the voicemail. Unclear what you were hating
- 11:05Speaker 1: me for for loving the Bieb? Is that what you said?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Is that what you meant Justin Bieber? I don't love
- 11:11Speaker 1: Justin Bieber. I just did an episode on him, but
- 11:12Speaker 1: I do love. I am a lover and a fighter
- 11:14Speaker 1: and I do love whoskerdo. And I'm glad that you
- 11:16Speaker 1: do now as well. I'm sure Gigi Allen did too.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You probably never admit it, but I'm sure he did.
- 11:20Speaker 1: All Right, Okay, DOOKI, Let's check out one more voicemail
- 11:23Speaker 1: this one from the sixth one four.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Hey Jake, It's do the Moon from the sixth to
- 11:30Speaker 5: one four Columbus, Ohio. Hot Fun in the Summer Time,
- 11:37Speaker 5: Find the Family Stone makes My Summer every year since
- 11:44Speaker 5: I was a kid, one of the first albums I
- 11:47Speaker 5: ever bought. And Yeah, Happy Summer Solstice, Stay Hot, Stay Cool,
- 11:57Speaker 5: rock a Roller.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Sly in the Family Stone, Hot Fun in the Summertime
- 12:02Speaker 1: from Our Girl in the six one four. Great recommendation
- 12:06Speaker 1: and one of the all time best summer bangers. I'm
- 12:08Speaker 1: gonna bump that one tonight, thank you very much, with
- 12:10Speaker 1: a can of something cold and crisp out of my
- 12:12Speaker 1: patio before moving night with the kids. Maybe I'll even
- 12:15Speaker 1: work a cigar into the mix. I don't know, who knows,
- 12:17Speaker 1: Mike my kind of loose tonight? Who knows?
- 12:21Speaker 2: Uh?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Thanks for the recommendation six one four all right six
- 12:23Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight to
- 12:26Speaker 1: leave a voicemail and a text. I want to know
- 12:29Speaker 1: about your rockstar encounters, who lifted you up? Who let
- 12:31Speaker 1: you down? They say never meet your heroes, but I
- 12:34Speaker 1: think that's bullshit. Maybe because my heroes aren't rockstars, So
- 12:38Speaker 1: maybe that's why that's saying never landed with me anyway.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I want to know what you guys think. Six one
- 12:42Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight send me
- 12:44Speaker 1: a voicemail or text. Speaking of which, let's read some texts.
- 12:49Speaker 1: So from the three six one more love for Whosker?
- 12:53Speaker 1: Do I love this? I love this little Hoosker new
- 12:55Speaker 1: moment we're having here in disgrace Land. This from the
- 12:57Speaker 1: three six one Jake, what's up, brother Jessica? And from
- 13:00Speaker 1: the three six one good old Corpus Christi Texas. I
- 13:03Speaker 1: was the one who sent picks a while back of
- 13:05Speaker 1: the Salina statute. Thanks for reading the message on air.
- 13:08Speaker 1: My daughter thought it was the coolest thing ever. But anyway,
- 13:11Speaker 1: being the old school punk rock girl that I am,
- 13:13Speaker 1: I appreciate the recommendation for Who's Could Do and Fiddler
- 13:17Speaker 1: Fidler Fiddler Fiddler, I don't know. I hadn't heard them before,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and I dig them both. But wondering if there is
- 13:24Speaker 1: gonna be any episodes on Fat Mike or any other
- 13:27Speaker 1: gimmes Take care, man, I don't know Fat Mike, you know.
- 13:30Speaker 1: To be honest, I don't know much about Fat Mike.
- 13:33Speaker 1: No effects, right right, Fat Mike no effects right, Fat Records,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I gotta know this. I can't get this wrong. Hold
- 13:43Speaker 1: on uh oh fat Mike, I'm Google and yeah, I
- 13:48Speaker 1: was right, no effects. Yeah, I guess I got to
- 13:51Speaker 1: learn some fat mic history here and get into this
- 13:54Speaker 1: with you guys. Yeah, let me check in on that,
- 13:56Speaker 1: all right. Let's just some other texts. So we've been
- 13:59Speaker 1: talking about the fiftieth anniversary of hip hop that's coming up,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and we we I asked the question who are your
- 14:06Speaker 1: favorite MC's. We get another thing going another converse part
- 14:09Speaker 1: of this conversation, who are your favorite uh top ten
- 14:13Speaker 1: rap groups? But the MC's one, that question is much harder.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And I just want to go through this this text
- 14:23Speaker 1: here because it's it's a good it's a good one
- 14:26Speaker 1: from the two oh six rights and top five MC's
- 14:28Speaker 1: of all time rock Him number one, Nos Number two,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Eminem number three, number four, Black Thought number five, Shah
- 14:34Speaker 1: Rock Mic Drop. I'm out. That's a solid list, good
- 14:38Speaker 1: mix of the old in the new six one seven,
- 14:41Speaker 1: nine oh six, six sixty three eight. Who are your
- 14:42Speaker 1: top five MC's, Let me know, let's get into it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I'm genuinely curious. I gave you my list last week,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but I want to know yours. The three one oh
- 14:50Speaker 1: Texan hijake. I'm a tour manager, been doing it for
- 14:53Speaker 1: thirty years. Just retired due to health. That sucks, man,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Sorry slash congrats. Maybe maybe it's a good thing. Actually
- 15:00Speaker 1: you get to chill get some time. Uh. The three
- 15:02Speaker 1: to one oh goes on to say I was a
- 15:03Speaker 1: punk slash hardcore kid and just discovered the podcast. Just
- 15:06Speaker 1: starting to dig through it, but really enjoying it so far.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I did a show for self by Southwest Usher backed
- 15:11Speaker 1: by the Afghan Whigs. It's on YouTube. It was amazing. Wow,
- 15:15Speaker 1: that does sound amazing. I want to check that out.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna check that out. Thank you, three to one
- 15:18Speaker 1: oh Usher with the Afghan Whigs backing them up. Great collaboration,
- 15:22Speaker 1: great recommendation. Thank you. All right. So the four to
- 15:26Speaker 1: one oh Texan longtime listener, first time connector. Okay, so
- 15:32Speaker 1: that's his expression, So four ozon so five. Actually it's
- 15:36Speaker 1: abundantly clear you don't know hip hop because you think
- 15:39Speaker 1: Biggie is better than Tupac. Hold on, hold on, just
- 15:44Speaker 1: fucking stop. Okay, Like it's an opinion. It's an opinion.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Having an opinion does not disqualify you from understanding something. Okay,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it's taste. It's taste. I believe Biggie Small's was a
- 16:05Speaker 1: better MC than Tupac secure, and that is based on
- 16:09Speaker 1: my taste. It's not fucking science. It's taste. I'm not
- 16:15Speaker 1: even gonna read or I'll read the rest of it
- 16:17Speaker 1: because I'm a nice guy. Says here, no shade, Oh
- 16:20Speaker 1: thank you, no shade. But you really need to listen
- 16:23Speaker 1: to the messages, Tupac offers again. Okay, it's not about
- 16:27Speaker 1: the message. I guess part of it is about the message.
- 16:30Speaker 1: And maybe maybe I don't resonate with Tupac's message in
- 16:34Speaker 1: the same way that I resonate with Biggie's message. Maybe
- 16:38Speaker 1: I don't want all the social conscious vibes and I
- 16:43Speaker 1: want some fucking party crystal and the hot tub vibes.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Maybe that's just my vibe. Doesn't mean I don't understand
- 16:50Speaker 1: a thing. Okay, again, it's taste, preference, opinion. Let's see.
- 16:55Speaker 1: It says he teaches people Tupac so much about history
