Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever been in a meeting after a merger and the air felt different?
- 0:04No one said anything was wrong, but it was tight.
- 0:07People were careful.
- 0:09The founder was a little sharper than usual.
- 0:12The new executives were smiling, but watching.
- 0:15You've been in that meeting, you know the one.
- 0:18On paper, the deal looked great.
- 0:20In the room, something was wobbling.
- 0:24That wobble is what I pay attention to.
- 0:29Welcome to the Kathie Owen Perspective.
- 0:31My name is Kathie Owen.
- 0:33I work with founders, acquisition leaders, and executive teams.
- 0:37I go inside organizations, especially during transition, and I observe what others miss inside leadership.
- 0:45And I stabilize it before it costs them.
- 0:48And when I say cost.
- 0:50I don't just mean money.
- 0:52I mean people.
- 0:53I mean momentum.
- 0:54I mean the quiet shift that happens when everyone feels uncertainty.
- 0:59But no one names it.
- 1:01Let me make this simple.
- 1:02Most mergers and acquisitions look at numbers.
- 1:05They should revenue, debt, legal exposure, market position.
- 1:11But here's what almost no one looks at.
- 1:15What happens to people under pressure?
- 1:18Because when pressure increases patterns surface.
- 1:22And I don't walk into a company looking for flaws.
- 1:26I walk in looking for stress patterns.
- 1:31Here's one power who actually holds it?
- 1:34Is it clear or does it subtly shift depending on who's sitting at the table?
- 1:39You've seen this.
- 1:40The founder says,"you are empowered." But everyone still looks at him before speaking.
- 1:46Or a new executive steps in, and no one knows if they're really allowed to lead.
- 1:52That hesitation it slows everything.
- 1:56It doesn't show up in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.
- 2:02But it shows up in execution.
- 2:05Here's another one, founder identity.
- 2:09If someone built that company, it's not just a business, it's their life.
- 2:13So when ownership changes even slightly something internal shifts and you can feel it, tone changes, meetings get tighter, feedback lands harder.
- 2:24That's not ego, that's attachment under pressure.
- 2:29And if that attachment isn't supported, it leaks into the culture.
- 2:34Employees feel it immediately.
- 2:38This is my favorite lens.
- 2:40Can leadership absorb stress without spreading it?
- 2:43Because stress moves, it is very contagious.
- 2:48If a leader walks into a room anxious, the room tightens.
- 2:52If a leader walks in steady, the room steadies.
- 2:55You felt that you've worked for both kinds of leaders.
- 2:59In a merger, this becomes amplified.
- 3:02Because everyone is already asking, am I safe?
- 3:06Is my role changing?
- 3:07Do I still matter?
- 3:09If leadership transmits anxiety, the entire system contracts.
- 3:14Contracted systems do not innovate well.
- 3:18They protect and protection mode slows growth.
- 3:23Now I wanna say something important.
- 3:26If you're an executive listening to this and thinking, oh, great, she's gonna come in and point out everything that's wrong.
- 3:33That is not what I do.
- 3:36I'm not there to label people.
- 3:38I'm there to stabilize systems.
- 3:41Every leadership team has pressure points.
- 3:43Every founder has identity tied to the business.
- 3:47Every culture has invisible rules.
- 3:50This isn't about fault, it's about awareness.
- 3:54And when you address these patterns proactively, something powerful happens.
- 3:59Founders feel respected instead of threatened.
- 4:02Buyers feel confident instead of guarded.
- 4:05Employees feel safe instead of reactive.
- 4:08And integration accelerates.
- 4:11Everyone wins.
- 4:14Let's be real.
- 4:15When executives leave six months after a deal.
- 4:19When middle managers disengage, when productivity dips quietly, that's not random.
- 4:25That's uncontained pressure.
- 4:28Human instability is financial instability.
- 4:32You don't see it immediately, but when leadership stays steady under pressure, momentum compounds, revenue stabilizes faster, retention improves.
- 4:44Trust builds.
- 4:46That's where I shine.
- 4:48Not in calling people out, in strengthening them.
- 4:52Mergers and acquisitions reveal truth.
- 4:55Pressure makes invisible patterns visible.
- 4:59If you can see them early, you can support them early.
- 5:02And when leadership feels steady, the entire organization feels steady.
- 5:06That's not soft.
- 5:08That's structural.
- 5:11If you've lived through that merger wobble, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 5:17I wrote a full blog post that goes deeper into these patterns and how to stabilize them proactively.
- 5:23You'll find that link in the show notes and description below.
