- 0:00So what does success mean to you? Are you a person that is driven by success?
- 0:05Is that determining your own happiness, whether you achieve it or not?
- 0:10We're gonna take a look at this. I'm gonna break it down as much as I can, humanly possible.
- 0:15And we're also gonna take a look at Kevin O'Leary sat down with Stephen Bartlett
- 0:20on A Diary of a CEO and they discussed a lot of things, but I wanted to specifically
- 0:25focus in on, zoom in on when he brings up entrepreneurship.
- 0:30And if you're familiar with Kevin O'Leary, he's on Shark Tank.
- 0:33He's on a number of different things.
- 0:35Goes by the name Mr. Wonderful. How I would like to have that name be applied
- 0:38to me. But, you know, we all have our crosses to bear.
- 0:42We're going to skip over to this. And I'm also going to, I might,
- 0:45you might get a little dizzy today because I might try a few things,
- 0:48but stick around for that.
- 0:50All right. So this is towards the beginning of the conversation.
- 0:54And he's saying the moment in his life that he said, I don't want to be the
- 0:58person scraping gum off the floor, but I want to be the person owning the store.
- 1:03And this is from Kevin O'Leary when he worked at an ice cream parlor back when he was in high school.
- 1:09You realize that there's kind of two people in life. There's the entrepreneur
- 1:12is the person that owns the ice cream parlor and there's the person that scrapes it off the floor.
- 1:16That provoked a question to me, which is, do you think anybody can own the ice cream parlor?
- 1:20I do think anybody can be an entrepreneur no i've
- 1:24tried to teach it and i mentor it
- 1:27all the time to the ceos that i work with there are some attributes of people
- 1:30that can do this a certain element of risk tolerance a certain element of focus
- 1:36and then the other element which i've really started to believe in of late is
- 1:39karma luck you need to be lucky you need it's like napoleon was once asked who
- 1:45are your favorite generals and he said.
- 1:47My favorite generals are lucky generals, my lucky generals.
- 1:50And I'm starting to think that in life, particular entrepreneurship,
- 1:54you look at the difference, the path of success and failure, and nobody.
- 1:58Okay, I want to stop right there because that was very eye-opening to me.
- 2:02And it's something I've actually been dwelling on lately.
- 2:04And it's this whole thing of luck. What you would call luck,
- 2:08is that the same thing as just God's blessing?
- 2:12Is that, I think there is such a thing of luck, But I think God is so above
- 2:17that, that he's in control of even luck itself and luck itself.
- 2:22And when he compares luck, karma, I've never thought of them the same way.
- 2:26I've never really said this, it's equivalency between them two.
- 2:30Seems like karma is more like what you put in is what you get.
- 2:34If you do bad things, you get bad things. If you do good things, you get good things.
- 2:38So I think that almost goes almost in direct contrast to luck.
- 2:43So I'm surprised he said that and he kind of equated the two.
- 2:46But this is something I've always thought about.
- 2:50Some people either got it or they don't.
- 2:53And this can go with just success in nature and you're running a business or
- 2:58being successful on a football field or any type of like space in life that you find yourself in.
- 3:06But I really want to kind of zoom in on this for you personally.
- 3:09What is, are you a person that is driven by success?
- 3:13Like, is that even on top of your mind? Because I don't know if everybody is,
- 3:18that is something they're even concerned about of achieving something.
- 3:22Are you going towards a goal in life or are you just passing through?
- 3:27And most of my life, I am just passing through. And I don't think it's hard
- 3:31to be just locked in, dead set on moving the needle and making gains in life
- 3:38and like going towards something that you really want.
- 3:41And I think the people like, that is almost the difference between we're all different.
- 3:46Nobody's the same. And it's like only those few people that are just,
- 3:49they're just psychopaths for success.
- 3:52They are just violently going after something that they have to have.
- 3:57And they can't think of anything else but achieving this one thing. They are obsessed.
- 4:03They are obsessed. Kevin O'Leary brings up his relationship with Steve Jobs,
- 4:08and he worked at Apple for a long time,
- 4:11and he has so many stories about working with Steve Jobs and almost like that
- 4:15he did not like the guy. He hated him at times.
- 4:19But as you can see in their conversation, he really ultimately loved Steve Jobs,
- 4:25and he has a deep sense of love in his heart for Steve Jobs and all that he did for him.
- 4:30And it was because Steve was mean to him and he was mean to everyone.
- 4:34He says, not being nice is just noise.
- 4:37Being a person that just gets stuck on things that don't matter is just noise. I'm locked in.
- 4:45He's just dead set on just making people the, the best product possible and
- 4:50telling them what they needed and what they wanted.
- 4:53And there's so many famous lines from Steve Jobs. He said, they don't know what
- 4:57they want. I'm going to tell them what they want, which brings me up to.
- 5:02The iPhone. I'm sure most people have a phone. You might not have an iPhone.
- 5:06But it's something I use all the time.
- 5:08But that man, Steve Jobs, in being able to create something like this,
- 5:13putting a computer inside of the phone and just, it's the simplicity and ease
- 5:19of use that makes it different as opposed to anything.
- 5:21If you're Apple, you don't go back. Once you go Apple, you don't go back.
- 5:25I don't think, you know, but with them raising the prices, that's where it kind
- 5:30of gets a little bit tough because they are extremely expensive at times,
- 5:34but comparative to other, and I know other people out there might be just up
- 5:39in arms and screaming because they're,
- 5:40you know, they believe in the galaxy and all those other, I don't even know
- 5:44what there's, those other phones that are out there that say like,
- 5:47whatever, the Samsung and all those different ones out there.
- 5:49But just the iPhone itself is just a beautiful thing.
- 5:54It's a beautiful thing. But I almost think that like the creation of Apple and
- 5:58technology that is out there,
- 5:59and I wanted to show this while I'm even pulling this up I wanted to just check this
- 6:02might give you the dizzy moment okay because I'm gonna switch it up
- 6:05a little bit you know I just wanted to I wanted to throw
- 6:08that out there you know just give you a little bit of a behind
- 6:11the scenes action you might not want behind the scenes and you can also see
- 6:14you might not know that I got Kansas City on look at that Kansas City it's Kansas
- 6:19City-lish but there we go baby and you can see what kind of notes I got back
- 6:23here I wanted to show everybody I got the NFL NFL NFL action but Besides,
- 6:29I mean, just it is a beautiful thing.
- 6:32And once you go Apple, you do not go back. Let me switch back.
- 6:35Nothing dizzy action. But Steve Jobs, like, I don't know if it's somebody that
- 6:40I want to aspire to, like to be him, because it seems like you sacrifice a lot.
- 6:47For, for that. If you go for that, it's like, I think not everybody is wired that way.
- 6:53Like Elon Musk, he is wired a certain way. And just, there's all these crazy
- 6:58CEOs out there and crazy business owners.
- 7:01I think if you want to be successful, you have to be a little bit crazy.
- 7:05I think you have to be a little bit nutso to actually, to accomplish something.
- 7:10Because if you're, if you're scattered everywhere in all different directions
- 7:15and you allow things that don't matter to just take place on your plate,
- 7:19you're not going to get anything. You're not going to get anywhere.
- 7:21You're not going to achieve what you want to achieve.
- 7:23And he, and Kevin O'Leary, he talks a lot about this between the signal and
- 7:28the noise and what, and it's the, a person that is able to discern between signal
- 7:33and noise is the person that can be great.
- 7:36And not everyone has it. and it's like are
- 7:39you going to be locked into accomplishing whatever it is
- 7:42you say you have you're you're stepping in your day you you
- 7:45have five things that you're going to get done you're going to get them done no
- 7:48matter what you are going to get them done and that's
- 7:51the signal and everything out it's discerning between what comes in your life
- 7:55what's thrown in your lap is that noise or signal is this helping me get those
- 7:59things done that I'm going to get done I'm obsessed enough over it that I'm
- 8:04going to do it but I just don't think everybody is like this and And I think
- 8:08that's probably good that not everybody's like this.
- 8:11And he's asked, was Steve happy?
- 8:15And he's like, you probably have to ask his wife. You'd have to.
- 8:18To me, he just looked angry.
- 8:20He just looked upset and mad. He was a meanie.
- 8:24He was a meanie. He was not the nicest person, but he got the stuff done.
- 8:31And what he created was, as we are living with now, and the ramifications of
- 8:36what he did, which is insane.
- 8:38But man, like, are you a person that is out there that you want to step into this, into your life?
- 8:43Are you at this top of your mind that you want to achieve something?
- 8:47Are you geared up for that?
- 8:48Are you locked in for that? Or do you have to sacrifice happiness for that?
- 8:54Can we, can the success of it? I think because we all have a motor running inside
- 8:59of us, always, we always have a motor.
- 9:01And some people's motors turned up and some people's motors,
- 9:04not as much, but it's always going.
- 9:07So if it's like, if we can get the destination, if we can get the,
- 9:10the crosshairs straight and we're going towards something, I think that's the biggest thing.
- 9:16I think that's the biggest thing. And it's like, how much is your motor going to?
- 9:20Drive you to it. I think what we do have control over is the things that we
- 9:25put in place, the things that we are going towards and the things that we were moving out,
- 9:29the obstacles in our way that are going to get in the way of achieving what
- 9:32we want to achieve. But it does, it becomes like philosophical.
- 9:35Like say I do get everything I want. I mean, would Steve Jobs have got enough?
- 9:40Like would he have like, say he created the iPhone and then he created something else, the iPad.
- 9:47And like when, when have you reached the destination? I think it like,
- 9:51it's corny to say sometimes, but it is the journey, you know,
- 9:55it's, and you don't know, like, so say,
- 9:58take a, like a step back in your life, what you are going towards,
- 10:02what you are wanting to achieve, where are you at in the, the spectrum or in the, the ride?
- 10:08Are you at the, like the middle part at the beginning part? Like you're,
- 10:12you're just grinding away, but you have to have those years of grinding away
- 10:16to achieve what you ultimately are going towards.
- 10:20I think just fixating your mind on something. If you are a person out there
- 10:23that wants to do something, because it can't be just fluff.
- 10:26It can't just be meaningless money.
- 10:28Money is just, it is a by-product. It can never, it can never be the end game
- 10:34because if it's the end game, it's meaningless. It's worthless.
- 10:37It's worthless. It's not something that we're going to carry with us,
- 10:41you know, to our deathbed.
- 10:42It's not good. It's not, But it's the relationships that we've had with people,
- 10:46the people that we've poured into to actually make a difference in this world
- 10:52that's going to have lasting effect.
- 10:54The things that you create and the things that you are going towards and what
- 10:58you are building, they can have lasting effect if they are honest to goodness, good things, you know?
- 11:07So sometimes I think we just need to check ourselves. And so we don't just spin our wheels.
- 11:12Sometimes it feels like it's easy to spin your wheels and almost to kind of
- 11:15recalibrate. What am I doing?
- 11:17Why am I doing this? What's going on? Like, what's the point of anything that I'm going towards?
- 11:21Am I just, I think it's so easy just in life. You're just like,
- 11:24just passing through. And it's just like, nothing makes sense.
- 11:27It's all just like getting from one day to the next. Like we're just this on this ride together.
- 11:32You know, it's like, is success going to make sense of it?
- 11:37Is success going to give a point to a point to the whole, like a punchline?
- 11:43I don't think it ultimately will, but I mean, having a drive for whatever you're
- 11:49going towards, make it the best you can,
- 11:52you know, pump as much into your, pump your blood,
- 11:56sweat, and tears into it, you know, and really, I would say just recalibrating
- 12:01what's the point of it and make it for good, make it for good,
- 12:05you know, and the things that we do for people and the things that we do unto God,
- 12:10that's the only thing that's going to last in the end.
- 12:13We're not going to have a U-Haul going to our funeral and bringing a lot of
- 12:17stuff, but it's the people at your funeral that you might not even known that
- 12:22you had an impact on in their life,
- 12:24that you might have changed the trajectories in their life just by being you
- 12:29and the best version of you.
