Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Suppression Without True Rejection of the Sexual Impulse Does Not Solve the Issue for the Spiritual Seeker

- 0:01The first impulse of religious or spiritual paths with respect
- 0:04to the sex impulse has frequently been to simply
- 0:07suppress and deny it. When any form of energy is
- 0:12forcefully suppressed, it acts like a coiled spring, storing
- 0:16that energy and building up its potential power until such time
- 0:21as it is able to overcome the force of the suppression, and
- 0:25then it is released with a tremendous uprising of that
- 0:29energy. The result can be explosive,
- 0:33similar to the eruption of a volcano.
- 0:36Pressures build up until the cover can no longer contain it
- 0:39and it bursts forth. As practitioners struggle with
- 0:43the force of the sexual impulse, they undergo mental, vital and
- 0:48even physical torture as they try to contain it.
- 0:53Self flagellation and the use of the Solis and the hair shirt
- 0:58represent techniques used by those who try to overpower the
- 1:02sexual drive by torturing the body.
- 1:06Those who try forceful suppression frequently find the
- 1:10energy turned in other directions, such as through a
- 1:13form of gluttony or greed for food, or through the rising of
- 1:18uncontrollable anger or an urge to dominate and control others,
- 1:22in many cases aggressively and through bullying behaviour.
- 1:28The turn of the nature toward one option or another depends
- 1:31highly on which guna is predominant in the nature.
- 1:35Rajas will tend toward the more aggressive forms and potentially
- 1:39turn outwards towards judgmental actions combined with attempts
- 1:43to control or bully others. Cuppa may tend towards
- 1:48substitution with fulfilling a desire for food or luxuries.
- 1:53Satwa may try to sublimate the energy into pursuits of an
- 1:58artistic or intellectual nature. Srioro Bindo provides a clue
- 2:03toward the solution when he suggests a substitution of
- 2:07focus. The being rejects the uprising
- 2:10of the desire in favor of this new focus.
- 2:14Western psychology describes the concept of sublimation of the
- 2:18sexual force into other forms, such as artistic activity or
- 2:23intellectual pursuits for the spiritual seeker, However, these
- 2:28forms do not fully answer the seeker's objective.
- 2:32Certain spiritual paths describe an alternative where the intense
- 2:36aspiration combined with certain psychophysical techniques can
- 2:41lead to what they call the awakening of the Kundalini.
- 2:45The serpent power coiled at the base of the spine at the first
- 2:49chakra, which then mounts up the subtle channels through the
- 2:53higher chakras until eventually it bursts through the 1000
- 2:58petaled chakra at the top of the head and joins the physical to
- 3:02the spiritual. Some paths attempt to harness
- 3:06the energy and turn it directly to a spiritual purpose in what
- 3:11are called tantric paths. While this may certainly be
- 3:14possible, there seems to be a considerable acceptance of
- 3:18indulgence of the sexual desire, which for most practitioners
- 3:22does not actually lead to the desired liberation, but rather a
- 3:27further strengthening of the sexual force and a form of
- 3:32justification for indulging in it.
- 3:36Humanity has tried numerous approaches to this question of
- 3:39managing the sexual impulse. A review of these approaches and
- 3:44what they have or have not succeeded in accomplishing can
- 3:48aid us in finding a solution that actually succeeds in
- 3:51achieving real mastery of the power active through the
- 3:55Muladhara first Chakra. Srioro Bindu observes quote.
- 4:01It is true that the mere suppression or holding down of
- 4:04desire is not enough, not by itself truly effective.
- 4:09But that does not mean that desires are to be indulged.
- 4:13It means that desires have not merely to be suppressed, but to
- 4:17be rejected from the nature. In place of desire there must be
- 4:21a single minded aspiration towards the Divine.
- 4:25As for love, the love must be turned singly towards the
- 4:29Divine. What men call by that name is a
- 4:32vital interchange for mutual satisfaction of desire, vital
- 4:37impulse or physical pleasure. There must be nothing of this
- 4:41interchange between Sadaks, for to seek for it or indulge this
- 4:45kind of impulse only leads away from the sadhna.
