- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome in to another episode
- 0:12Speaker 1: of DiCecco Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And the Eagles fall to the Dallas Cowboys 38-21 on.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Monday Night Football.
- 0:24Speaker 1: They sit in a really difficult spot right now because
- 0:29Speaker 1: it's hard to configure what you do in an NFC
- 0:34Speaker 1: that's not great. But the Philadelphia Eagles have not done
- 0:37Speaker 1: a lot this season to instill confidence that they can
- 0:40Speaker 1: get this ship righted. And when you look at this game,
- 0:45Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys had 416 yards of total offense, 204 rushing,
- 0:48Speaker 1: 212 passing. And the Eagles had 121 rushing, 200 passing,
- 0:51Speaker 1: 321 passing. total yards, and then the turnover, which happened
- 1:03Speaker 1: late in the game, where Tanner McKee threw an interception
- 1:06Speaker 1: to linebacker DeMarvian Overshone, who made a tremendously athletic play
- 1:10Speaker 1: to take it away, and the air just got sucked
- 1:13Speaker 1: out of Lincoln Financial Field, and for me, that felt like,
- 1:17Speaker 1: not to be dramatic, that the season was drawing to
- 1:22Speaker 1: a close. They have a game against the Commanders coming up, and...
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's really tough to see some silver lining here. Now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: if you're looking at it from an optimistic standpoint, the offense,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I thought, did a nice job. There was more condensed sets.
- 1:41Speaker 1: There were tight formations. There was quicker dropbacks with Tanner McKee,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and you noticed that early in the game where they
- 1:50Speaker 1: opened in 13 personnel. The third tight end in this
- 1:53Speaker 1: case was Grant Calcaterra, who, by the way, was activated
- 1:57Speaker 1: from injured reserve. So you have Grant Calcaterra, Dallas Goddard,
- 2:03Speaker 1: Johnny Munt, and Tanner McKee gets the ball out quickly
- 2:07Speaker 1: to Saquon Barkley for a 12-yard pickup. Then Saquon gets
- 2:11Speaker 1: a 29-yard run running off the left side with Jordan
- 2:14Speaker 1: Mailata and Landon Dickerson paving the way. And you get
- 2:17Speaker 1: the sense that, okay, this might be their night offensively.
- 2:21Speaker 1: But the defense, and I did not see this coming,
- 2:25Speaker 1: were not able to hold up their end of the bargain.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So the Eagles have yet to play complementary football at
- 2:31Speaker 1: this stage of the season. They're now 2-5, and through
- 2:36Speaker 1: seven games, you have yet to see them play complementary football,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and that's a problem. So finally, the offense gets on track.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I thought Sean Mannion called a good game. There was
- 2:46Speaker 1: a lot of variation. I like the formations. I like
- 2:49Speaker 1: the overall game plan. that he had for McKee, where
- 2:52Speaker 1: it was getting the ball out quickly. I thought that
- 2:55Speaker 1: they did a much better job running the football with
- 2:59Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley and Damian Pierce. They also had Elijah Mitchell
- 3:02Speaker 1: as the third running back who they elevated from the
- 3:05Speaker 1: practice squad.
- 3:05Speaker 2: We'll get to him in a moment.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But I thought the Eagles did a nice job with
- 3:09Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley and Damian Pierce being the one-two punch early.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And then Saquon Barkley clearly wasn't 100%. He was gutting
- 3:17Speaker 1: it out. He was later ruled questionable with a back injury.
- 3:21Speaker 1: There was a lot of points in the game where
- 3:22Speaker 1: he was coming in for a snap and then coming off,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and Damian Pierce was handling the rest of the workload,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and at some point, it was really hard to decipher
- 3:32Speaker 1: a rhythm or any sort of rhyme or reason to
- 3:39Speaker 1: how they were deploying Saquon Barkley, and at some point,
- 3:42Speaker 1: you have to protect the player from themselves, and It
- 3:44Speaker 1: was evident early that Saquon just wasn't right. And I
- 3:49Speaker 1: thought he was really productive when he was out there.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But then Damian Pierce gets hurt later in the game.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And Damian Pierce and Saquon, by the way, both scored
- 3:56Speaker 1: touchdowns in this game. And Damian Pierce got hurt. He
- 4:01Speaker 1: never returned. So by the end of the game, it
- 4:03Speaker 1: was only Elijah Mitchell, who's played a lot in this league,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but not necessarily meaningful snaps in quite some time. So
- 4:13Speaker 1: he had a couple of receptions for 23 yards. He
- 4:16Speaker 1: just had to fill in his kick returner. Britton Covey
- 4:19Speaker 1: left this game with a knee injury. So Makai Lemon
- 4:24Speaker 1: had to step in at punt returner. Elijah Mitchell had
- 4:26Speaker 1: to step in at kick returner. But I thought, like,
- 4:30Speaker 1: for example, Makai Lemon really came alive in this game.
- 4:33Speaker 1: He scored his first NFL touchdown. on a really well-designed play,
- 4:38Speaker 1: 10 McKee throws a dart. He takes a hit at
- 4:40Speaker 1: the goal line, four yard touchdown. He was, he's playing
- 4:43Speaker 1: with a lot more confidence and the way that the
- 4:45Speaker 1: Eagles are using him right now, I think is way
- 4:47Speaker 1: more conducive. They also ran a successful screenplay in this
- 4:50Speaker 1: game and it was not behind the line of scrimmage,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but they got the ball into the hands of Darius
- 4:55Speaker 1: Cooper and he was able to take advantage of some
- 4:58Speaker 1: yards after the catch. He had nothing but open, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: open field in front of him. And Darius, Dallas Goddard
- 5:05Speaker 1: caught some passes over the middle. Hollywood Brown had a
- 5:08Speaker 1: couple of receptions in this game. So they did a
- 5:10Speaker 1: really nice job of working in the different players that
- 5:12Speaker 1: they were working with. And they played well enough for
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Eagles to win if the defense was playing as
- 5:18Speaker 1: they normally do.
- 5:19Speaker 2: But they were.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Very leaky in run defense. I just gave you the
- 5:22Speaker 1: rushing numbers. When you're paying these defensive tackles in Jalen
- 5:26Speaker 1: Carter and Jordan Davis, you're paying them top-of-the-market money, especially
- 5:31Speaker 1: with Jalen Carter. You need them to be able to
- 5:34Speaker 1: plug the holes there in the run game and shore
- 5:36Speaker 1: things up. They're not doing a great job setting the edge,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and they missed Nolan Smith in this game. Nolan Smith,
- 5:43Speaker 1: as I've outlined many times, is their best edge setter.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And I thought that they were really susceptible on the corners.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Javante Williams was running like a man possessed and was
- 5:53Speaker 1: really finishing his runs and making the Eagles defenders wrap
- 5:57Speaker 1: them up. Uh, Rick Wollin did not have a particularly
- 6:00Speaker 1: strong game and he declined interviews politely after the game. Um,
- 6:05Speaker 1: he said he respects what we do. He's, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: get home safely type of thing, but he wasn't, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: really in a mood to talk. Jalen Carter, uh, as
- 6:15Speaker 1: I understand it, didn't really fill up the talking. And
- 6:19Speaker 1: that's kind of the mood when your defense and you've
- 6:23Speaker 1: done so much of the heavy lifting for much of
- 6:25Speaker 1: the season to this point.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And when you.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Finally have a game in which you need the offense
- 6:31Speaker 1: to help you, and I think the offense, to be clear,
- 6:33Speaker 1: did a nice job, you know, all things considered, the
- 6:37Speaker 1: defense wasn't able to meet the moment. And you can
- 6:41Speaker 1: look across the board. I thought that There were some
- 6:44Speaker 1: really good throws from Dak Prescott. The touchdown to George
- 6:47Speaker 1: Pickens before the half where Drew McCuba had good coverage
- 6:50Speaker 1: in the right corner of the end zone and George
- 6:52Speaker 1: Pickens did a nice job of the body control, keeping
- 6:55Speaker 1: his feet in. There wasn't much more that Drew could
- 7:01Speaker 1: do in that situation. And Reek gets beat by CeeDee
- 7:05Speaker 1: Lamb after that for a touchdown.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And before all that, the first touchdown, I believe it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Was Cooper DeGene who really just didn't see the football.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And he was pretty close, you know, tightly covering them,
- 7:20Speaker 1: but he didn't find the football. And Dak Prescott put
- 7:23Speaker 1: it where only CeeDee Lamb could get it.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So sometimes you have to tip your cap to the
- 7:27Speaker 2: other team.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I think they did a really good job of countering
- 7:30Speaker 1: what the Eagles like to do and being aggressive when needed.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The running game, they can certainly hang their hat on it.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Tyler Goodson was another player who I thought did a
- 7:39Speaker 1: nice job working in tandem with Javante Williams. The offensive
- 7:43Speaker 1: line for the Cowboys, whether or not it was just
- 7:46Speaker 1: an off night for the Eagles defensive line or whether
- 7:48Speaker 1: or not they're starting to round into form, they played
- 7:51Speaker 1: a lot better than what I've seen on tape this year.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And they were really handling the line of scrimmage with
- 7:57Speaker 1: authority and violence. The Eagles defensive line was not generating
- 8:01Speaker 1: a lot of penetration. And let's talk about the pass
- 8:03Speaker 1: rush or lack.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Thereof, because.
- 8:08Speaker 1: The Eagles were not able to to generate pressure off
- 8:12Speaker 1: the edge, whether it was J. Lux Hunt, Jonathan Grenard.
- 8:17Speaker 1: You know, take your pick. Arnold Abacate.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It's just A.J. Epinesa.
- 8:24Speaker 1: There just wasn't any pressure at all. And Dak Prescott
- 8:28Speaker 1: was allowed to stand back there and work through his
- 8:31Speaker 1: progressions and do whatever he wanted. And when you aren't
- 8:36Speaker 1: able to get home, and this has been a prevailing
- 8:37Speaker 1: theme all season, you know, you're not doing your secondary
- 8:42Speaker 1: any favors. And there were a lot of times in
- 8:44Speaker 1: this game where, yes, Rick Wolin had a couple of
- 8:46Speaker 1: pass breakups, but I thought that he was beaten. They
- 8:49Speaker 1: went after him a little bit in this game. At
- 8:51Speaker 1: least that's how it felt watching it initially. And then
- 8:55Speaker 1: you get to just watching, you know, some of the
- 9:00Speaker 1: safety play I thought was okay. Makuba was active. He
- 9:04Speaker 1: was getting after it early. But, you know, there's a
- 9:07Speaker 1: lot of questions that I have about the Eagles defense
- 9:11Speaker 1: coming off that game, particularly as it pertains to stopping
- 9:15Speaker 1: the run.
- 9:16Speaker 3: So this hit me when I was doing work around
- 9:18Speaker 3: the house the other day and trying to open up
- 9:20Speaker 3: some boxes and cut some things that I can never
- 9:23Speaker 3: find the scissors or knives in my house. And how
- 9:25Speaker 3: great would it be if I just had my own
- 9:28Speaker 3: personal pocket knife that I had on me all the time.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And that's why I can't wait to get my Benchmade knives.
- 9:35Speaker 3: They've got this legendary bug out knife. It's designed specifically

- 12:30Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 12:35Speaker 3: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 12:38Speaker 1: They didn't do a good job in doing that. They
- 12:40Speaker 1: weren't shedding blocks. They weren't being the enforcer. And when
- 12:44Speaker 1: you are a defense that has grown accustomed to doing it,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you have to ask yourself why.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Could they potentially be wearing down? Well, it's week seven.
- 12:51Speaker 2: There's a lot of young guys on there. The Eagles
- 12:53Speaker 2: rotated quite a bit.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I don't know that I buy that. So we're looking
- 12:58Speaker 1: for answers. They did not have a good showing on
- 13:00Speaker 1: Monday Night Football. And when the Eagles really needed them
- 13:03Speaker 1: to do so, they weren't able to answer the bell.
- 13:06Speaker 1: But I do think that it's encouraging to see those
- 13:08Speaker 1: signs from the offense where you haven't had a lot
- 13:12Speaker 1: of optimism.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And you didn't really know what their direction was going
- 13:15Speaker 2: to be.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And again, this is just a small sample size, but
- 13:19Speaker 1: what you saw was an offense that came out with
- 13:21Speaker 1: a much more creative game plan. They seemed to tailor
- 13:24Speaker 1: it around the strengths of Tanner McKee and put him
- 13:27Speaker 1: in a position where he wasn't dropping back.
- 13:31Speaker 2: They weren't having these extensive dropbacks.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He was getting the ball out quickly and facilitating it
- 13:35Speaker 1: to a number of receivers and not really thinking. He
- 13:38Speaker 1: seemed to have a little bit more confidence in this
- 13:40Speaker 1: game and I liked a lot of what I saw
- 13:43Speaker 1: from Saquon Barkley and Damian Pierce in the running game,
- 13:46Speaker 1: where it had been such tough sledding to this point.
- 13:49Speaker 1: When you go out there and you're seeing them be
- 13:51Speaker 1: able to run downhill, or in the case of Saquon
- 13:54Speaker 1: with the 29 yarder, find the crease to the left
- 13:57Speaker 1: and break out there. That is what the Eagles want
- 14:01Speaker 1: to do philosophically, and they haven't been able to do that.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So I also would say there's another layer to this
- 14:08Speaker 1: that we're That really, in the grand scheme of things,
- 14:11Speaker 1: is probably going to get overlooked because of everything else
- 14:13Speaker 1: that happened. But they also gave up a 91-yard kick
- 14:18Speaker 1: return touchdown.
- 14:19Speaker 2: That was called back.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But it speaks to the point that I've been talking
- 14:23Speaker 1: about for a while now because the Eagles have lost
- 14:26Speaker 1: so many players on their kick coverage unit. Will Shipley,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Trotter's playing more snaps on defense. Darius Cooper's playing more
- 14:34Speaker 1: snaps on offense. You don't have Sidney Brown. You don't
- 14:38Speaker 1: have Kylan Granson. You don't have.
- 14:42Speaker 2: E.J.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Jenkins, who had the second most snaps this season. So
- 14:48Speaker 1: you're missing all of these guys, and you're patching in
- 14:51Speaker 1: whoever you can find. Mack McWilliams, A.K. Ebikady, Keyshawn James-Lubioff,
- 14:57Speaker 1: the practice squad. They have Ty Robinson on kickoff. Pretty
- 15:01Speaker 1: much anyone who is available, they're throwing out there, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: I feel for Michael Clay because he doesn't have... When
- 15:10Speaker 1: it comes down to special teams, you have to be
- 15:13Speaker 1: really special or have, you know, multi-value to be able
- 15:16Speaker 1: to stay on the roster. And sometimes those guys who
- 15:19Speaker 1: are on the fringes are most expendable. So you don't
- 15:21Speaker 1: necessarily have the say. And, oh, I should also mention
- 15:25Speaker 1: Cameron Latu was waived as well, who was a core
- 15:27Speaker 1: member for him. And... It really puts Michael Clay, and
- 15:32Speaker 1: he was never going to make an excuse. He never does.
- 15:34Speaker 1: It puts him in a bind because what do you
- 15:37Speaker 1: do as a special teams coordinator?
- 15:38Speaker 2: You don't make excuses. You work with who you have.
- 15:40Speaker 1: But when you have players who aren't accustomed to playing that,
- 15:44Speaker 1: you're going to be more susceptible to giving up plays
- 15:47Speaker 1: and having a little bit more leaky susceptibility in the
- 15:52Speaker 1: return game. And while we talk about the offense and
- 15:55Speaker 1: the defense in this game, That 91-yard kickoff return for
- 15:59Speaker 1: a touchdown didn't count, but it could have. And that's
- 16:02Speaker 1: another layer of something that I've been kind of talking
- 16:05Speaker 1: about over the last few weeks. And no one seems
- 16:08Speaker 1: to care about special teams until it comes back and
- 16:11Speaker 1: gets you. And another thing I want to mention, because
- 16:13Speaker 1: I already saw somebody, you know, for some reason was
- 16:17Speaker 1: angry at me for, you know, talking about how Jay
- 16:22Speaker 1: Lux Hunt was having a really good training camp. And
- 16:24Speaker 1: how he's not having a good season or not getting
- 16:28Speaker 1: a lot of pressure.
- 16:28Speaker 2: One, he's playing injured.
- 16:30Speaker 1: The other part of it is that what he did
- 16:32Speaker 1: in training camp, that happened. He made plays.
- 16:35Speaker 2: He was active. He was an impactful player every day.
- 16:40Speaker 1: That wasn't an embellishment by any stretch. For whatever reason,
- 16:45Speaker 1: it hasn't carried over into the regular season. But that
- 16:48Speaker 1: doesn't take away from the summer that he had.
- 16:50Speaker 2: And so....
- 16:53Speaker 1: It's not working for him this season. It's not working
- 16:56Speaker 1: for really anyone of the edge rusher group. Grenard is
- 17:00Speaker 1: a player that we're going to be having a lot
- 17:02Speaker 1: of conversations about over the next few weeks and probably
- 17:06Speaker 1: for the rest of the season. He played in this game,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and he was a game-time decision, but you'd have to
- 17:13Speaker 1: look and see how many snaps he played because it
- 17:15Speaker 1: didn't feel like he was on the field for an
- 17:16Speaker 1: awful lot of time. The Eagles traded a decent... They
- 17:22Speaker 1: didn't just You know, they didn't get him for a flyer.
- 17:25Speaker 1: They really believed that he was going to be someone
- 17:28Speaker 1: that could help their pass rush.
- 17:29Speaker 2: He hasn't done that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And therefore, he hasn't opened things up for the other players,
- 17:34Speaker 1: which is a big part of my analysis when I
- 17:38Speaker 1: was talking about the edge rushers and why I was
- 17:40Speaker 1: so bullish on Jaleks is because when you have Jonathan
- 17:43Speaker 1: Grenard opposite him, I look at what Jalen Phillips provided,
- 17:47Speaker 1: it elevates the play and unlocks the players around them,
- 17:52Speaker 1: around him. And the pass rush for me is a
- 17:55Speaker 1: big thing because it hasn't.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Come to life.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And we're now seven games into this thing. You have
- 18:02Speaker 1: premier defensive tackles. You have a well compensated edge rusher
- 18:07Speaker 1: room in the sense that I'm looking at Grenard, uh,
- 18:10Speaker 1: J looks hunt.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It will be eventually, but they just haven't, they haven't performed.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Um, they haven't performed and it's now putting a lot
- 18:20Speaker 1: of pressure on the secondary. And what you saw is
- 18:21Speaker 1: some leakiness there and, That's what's going to happen.
- 18:25Speaker 2: But I thought Dallas really took it to them.
- 18:28Speaker 1: When you leave a secondary with too much time to
- 18:31Speaker 1: cover and you're facing a George Pickens and a CeeDee
- 18:33Speaker 1: Lamb and Ryan Flanoy, who I think is a really
- 18:39Speaker 1: underrated third receiver, this is what happens. So where do
- 18:43Speaker 1: the Eagles go from here? Well, they have another NFC
- 18:46Speaker 1: East game coming up this weekend against the Washington Commanders.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Is the season over? I mean, it's not looking great.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And so that's kind of where I'm at with everything
- 18:57Speaker 1: right now, and we'll see where things go. But that's
- 19:00Speaker 1: going to do it for this episode of the Checo Daily.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all on the
- 19:06Speaker 1: next one.
