- 0:00Well, welcome. Welcome to Maranatha Conference,
- 0:04Shabiba, all that you want to call it Year #25.
- 0:08Yes, Amen. My first time here was in 2014,
- 0:20and I have to, I have to be honest from the beginning that I
- 0:23don't remember a more awake, passionate, excited opening
- 0:29service than this one tonight. Yeah, man, yeah, that's that's
- 0:32how my person. You might disagree, but that's
- 0:33what I sensed. So I'm excited, and I also want
- 0:40to let you know from the beginning that because you chose
- 0:43to come here and I I pray and trust that you came here for the
- 0:46Lord primarily, the Lord will reward you, because when we do
- 0:49seek Him, He does bless us. And so you're you're not wasting
- 0:53your time. This weekend you didn't
- 0:56sacrifice much, I'm sure. Maybe in the natural feels that
- 0:59way. But the Lord will reward us for
- 1:02seeking him in this way. And so I'm eager to see how He
- 1:04will bless us as we seek his face.
- 1:07You might have noticed these tshirts, the tshirt that I'm
- 1:10wearing, tshirt that the priest he was wearing, some other
- 1:12people sprinkled around. You might have noticed what is
- 1:15said on the back. And if you don't know what's
- 1:17said on the back, I won't turn around.
- 1:18But I'll tell you, something greater is here, something
- 1:23greater is here. Now that's not a phrase that we
- 1:26came up with. That is a statement that Jesus
- 1:29Christ himself made. And I want to show you in the
- 1:33Bible very quickly where Jesus said it and how many times he
- 1:37said it in the same context for you to see what he was trying to
- 1:42declare about himself. So turn with me briefly to
- 1:44Matthew chapter 12. And I want you to see here
- 1:49beginning in verse 6, Matthew 12, Jesus was going through
- 2:00grain fields on the Sabbath with his disciples.
- 2:02They were hungry. They began to pluck heads of
- 2:05grain and they ate. And the Pharisees were there to
- 2:08spy on Jesus. Try to find something wrong with
- 2:11Jesus and his followers. And they thought they got him
- 2:13somewhere in these fields. And Jesus corrects their
- 2:16understanding of the Sabbath, and he proclaims his authority
- 2:20in this way. Verse six, he says to them, I
- 2:23tell you, something greater than the temple is here, something
- 2:29greater than the temple is here. That's Jesus's first statement.
- 2:33But then you continue and you see in the same context as he
- 2:36engages with the religious leaders.
- 2:39In verse 41 of the same chapter, he says the men of Nineveh will
- 2:45rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it.
- 2:49For they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold,
- 2:52something greater than Jonah is here number two.
- 2:58And immediately right after, in verse 42, Jesus gives his third
- 3:01and final reference concerning himself and his superiority.
- 3:06Where he says, the Queen of the South will rise up at the
- 3:08judgment with this generation and condemn it.
- 3:11For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of
- 3:14Solomon. And behold, something greater
- 3:17than Solomon is here, Something greater than the Temple is here,
- 3:23Something greater than Jonah is here, something greater than
- 3:26Solomon is here. Now, out of all the things that
- 3:29Christ could have referred himself to, out of all the
- 3:33things that Christ could have referenced, why these three
- 3:36identities? Why these three realms, so to
- 3:40speak? Well, for one, the Jew would
- 3:43have understood very well what Jesus was trying to communicate
- 3:46by contrasting himself more than contrasting, towering over these
- 3:50things that were highly prized and treasured by the people of
- 3:55Israel. More specifically, what Christ
- 3:58is trying to say is that he is the fulfillment of the three
- 4:04great offices that were in operation during the Old
- 4:08Covenant. And so by saying that he was
- 4:12greater than the temple, he's actually declaring that his
- 4:16priesthood is more significant and more effective that his
- 4:22offering as a High priest pleases.
- 4:25God satisfies his justice, satisfies his demands, and makes
- 4:29a one time offering that never has to be repeated and seals
- 4:32your salvation forever. Something greater than the
- 4:36temple is here a greater priest, and that priest is also the
- 4:40sacrifice. Something greater than Jonah is
- 4:44here. Here's Christ expressing that he
- 4:49occupies the office of the prophet.
- 4:52And not only was he sent by the Father to proclaim the word of
- 4:55God, he is the perfect expression and the fullest
- 4:59revelation of God. He is the radiance of the glory
- 5:04of God, and he's the exact imprint of his nature.
- 5:07Something greater than Jonah is here.
- 5:10Yes, we understand the immediate context is because he's going to
- 5:12perform a miracle that was foretold by Jonah.
- 5:16But more than that, the office itself.
- 5:18I'm the prophet of prophets. I am the.
- 5:22Word of God. And lastly, he says something
- 5:25greater than Solomon is here. Now we're talking about what?
- 5:28What do you think it is his role as what?
- 5:31King. King.
- 5:34And so he is declaring that he is king.
- 5:37Not just king, but king of kings, governing not just one
- 5:40nation, one people, but governing the world, the
- 5:42universe who knows how to display and demonstrate perfect
- 5:48righteousness and execute true justice.
- 5:51And he also knowing how to rule and oversee the hearts of men
- 5:57perfectly, perfectly, as he is the king of the Kingdom now and
- 6:03will usher in that Kingdom here on earth, forever and ever and
- 6:06ever. And so you have Jesus saying, I
- 6:09am greater than the temple because I am a greater priest,
- 6:11and I have a greater sacrifice. I'm I'm greater than Jonah
- 6:14because I am the fullest expression.
- 6:16Of the word of God, the nature of God, the character of God.
- 6:18And I am the king of kings, the long-awaited son of.
- 6:22David, who will occupy the throne for eternity?
- 6:27Now, that's more than just a clever, crafty way of
- 6:30interpreting Jesus's words. Why is it significant for us to
- 6:35understand Jesus declaring himself to be superior in these
- 6:39areas? Because how you view Christ will
- 6:43determine how you honor Christ. You see, Jesus said these things
- 6:48to his immediate audience because they refused to
- 6:52acknowledge his authority. They reserved their repentance
- 6:59and they would not give him the awe that he deserved as king.
- 7:04None of a repented when a man much more inferior to Jesus gave
- 7:09a very brief sermon. And here's Christ who was giving
- 7:12the words of spirit and life, and these men hardened their
- 7:16hearts even more. Solomon, as fabulous as he was,
- 7:20was flawed in many ways. And here is the king who
- 7:24beautifies wisdom, who perfects it, who has not one thing wrong
- 7:30with him, and they wouldn't bow the knee.
- 7:33Here's the one who did not sin, and they try to find sin in him,
- 7:38and he declares that he is greater than the temple and they
- 7:42would not acknowledge his position.
- 7:48How you view Jesus Christ is the most important thing about your
- 7:51life. It's the most important thing.
- 7:54Not your job, not your hairstyle, not what you do in
- 7:57your retirement, what you study. The most important thing about
- 8:01your brief mist of life is how you perceive the.
- 8:05Person of Jesus Christ, Jesus says unless you believe that I
- 8:10am He, you will die in your sins if you have a wrong view of
- 8:12Christ that will determine your eternal destination.
- 8:15This is not a matter of opinion. This is not a subjective
- 8:19sparring that we can do. No, it's a matter of eternal
- 8:22life. How you view Christ will
- 8:24ultimately determine where you spend eternity.
- 8:26And if you if you are a person who says, I see him as the high
- 8:29priest, I see him as the Word of God Incarnate, I see him as the
- 8:33King of Kings. How you view Christ will also
- 8:37determine the depth of your sanctification doesn't just stop
- 8:40at you expressing your belief in him.
- 8:42It's ultimately you, something that you continue to discover
- 8:45about him, how great he is more and more and more do you see and
- 8:49perceive it. And that has an impact and how
- 8:51you're conformed to the very same image of his greatness, of
- 8:54his moral greatness especially. And so how you view Christ and
- 8:59the goal here today is we would need so many meetings to touch
- 9:03on each of those components of his nature and of his work.
- 9:07And so we're going to stick with Solomon for this weekend.
- 9:10Why Solomon personally? Because in reading about Solomon
- 9:14and 1st Kings a few months back, I saw the great detail that the
- 9:18Holy Spirit gave concerning him as king and his accomplishments
- 9:23and what he was able to do and his abilities.
- 9:27And what was ringing in my mind as I was scaling through First
- 9:31Kings chapter 2-3 all the way up to 10 and 11 all through that,
- 9:35as as you were just you're just reading this blueprint of this
- 9:39man's amazing capacity. Jesus is greater.
- 9:45Jesus is greater. Jesus said I'm greater than even
- 9:48him. So I thought to endeavor to say,
- 9:54Okay, Lord, I know you're greater.
- 9:55That's my theology, right? It's wrong to say that Jesus is
- 9:57not greater. But show me how you're greater.
- 10:00Let me see it. Let me behold it.
- 10:03And I hope that you would behold it with me and that you would
- 10:06see it for yourself. Here's where I'll end in this
- 10:09brief introduction. When we get, when we get
- 10:12together, when this is organized year after year, our desire is
- 10:14many things. One that people who don't know
- 10:16Christ would come to know Christ.
- 10:18That happens, I believe, every year it's happened.
- 10:20Or at least one person has given their life to Christ, which is
- 10:23amazing, right? To organize all that for that
- 10:25goal is, is, is something that God would approve of.
- 10:28Obviously for Saints to be encouraged to be built up, to
- 10:31meet one another, to be refreshed in a very dark and
- 10:34deprived world, absolutely. But there is a specific goal in
- 10:37this, in this conference, at least in my prayers, and that is
- 10:40this, that every single person here.
- 10:43Would leave with a ferocious desire to master.
- 10:50The word of God, if there's anything that we're hoping for
- 10:55and praying for, is that you would leave here with this new
- 10:59ambition to devour the Bible for yourself.
- 11:05To not be content with looking at just some things, but to.
- 11:11But to ask God to open your eyes to see all that he wants to show
- 11:14you in his written word. And one way of being able to
- 11:19hopefully stimulate that is to see how one verse can take up a
- 11:24conference is to see how one statement that Jesus makes
- 11:29Behold, something greater than than Solomon is here, would
- 11:31cause you to say this word is inexhaustible.
- 11:36Where does this well end? And I'll give you a hint it
- 11:39doesn't. And that you would for the rest
- 11:42of your days draw from this well, as we take Matthew 1242
- 11:47and try to ring out as much as we can from it, which we won't
- 11:53for you to say, if that's what can happen with one verse.
- 11:56Lord, I want to know all that you have to say to me, and I
- 12:02want to show you what's at cost. Just one example.
- 12:04What's at cost if you and I as believers do not value?
- 12:08The word of God. Do not seek to know all that God
- 12:12has said. At least familiarize yourself
- 12:14with it. Let me give you an example.
- 12:15Turn with me to Luke 24, Luke 24 and go to verse 13 says here in
- 12:32Luke 2413 that very day. Two of them.
- 12:35We're going to a village named Emmaus, about 7 miles from
- 12:38Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these
- 12:41things that had happened. While they were talking and
- 12:44discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with
- 12:47them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
- 12:53And he said to them, what is this conversation that you were
- 12:55holding with each other as you walk?
- 12:57And they stood still, looking sad.
- 13:02And one of them, named Cleopas, answered him.
- 13:04Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the
- 13:07things that have happened there in these days?
- 13:10And he said them want things. And they set them concerning
- 13:13Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty indeed, and
- 13:17word before God and all the people, and how our chief
- 13:20priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and
- 13:23crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the
- 13:25one to redeem Israel. Yes.
- 13:27And besides all this, it is now the third day since these things
- 13:30happened. We have two sad disciples
- 13:32walking towards Emmaus. Jesus camouflages himself.
- 13:37Does it make himself known? How true is it that as you're
- 13:40walking, Christ doesn't necessarily show himself all the
- 13:43time He camouflages himself and he.
- 13:46He wants to hear. He already knew their
- 13:48conversation, but he wanted them to open up and see what was the
- 13:51reason for their sadness. And they do they they open up
- 13:55and they say are you? Did you just walk in here?
- 13:57Did you not hear the news is everybody knows what just
- 13:59happened. This mighty prophet that we were
- 14:02hoping was a fulfillment of the prophets.
- 14:05He disappointed us. They killed them and our hopes
- 14:10are dashed. Now here's Jesus inquiring the
- 14:16source of their sorrow. Now, what would what would you
- 14:19do if if you were a pastor? You probably put your arm around
- 14:24these these disciples, say it's okay, and try to comfort them
- 14:29and try to give some kind of assistance to their heavy
- 14:36hearts. Here's what Jesus does verse 25.
- 14:39And he said to them, Oh, foolish ones.
- 14:42That seems kind of insensitive, doesn't it?
- 14:45Oh, foolish ones. I have a feeling that you're not
- 14:48going to get that inseminary for your counseling course, but this
- 14:52is Jesus. His ways are perfect, he said to
- 14:54them. Oh, foolish ones, Let me say it
- 14:56one more time. Rebuke is necessary sometimes in
- 14:59the Christian walk, oh foolish ones, and slow of heart, to
- 15:04believe all that the prophets have spoken.
- 15:07Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these
- 15:10things and enter into his glory? What is Christ getting at here?
- 15:15He's diagnosing the real source of their problems.
- 15:20The source of the problems is not that they believed the right
- 15:22things and what they believed did not come to pass.
- 15:28It was that they did not believe everything.
- 15:32They were ignorant of all that the prophets had spoken.
- 15:38Either they were willfully and selectively interpreting the
- 15:41word of God, or they were negligent, and that is their
- 15:45responsibility. Nonetheless, look what Jesus
- 15:48says carefully, oh foolish ones, slow of heart, to believe all
- 15:53all that the prophets have spoken.
- 15:55You believed some you're familiar with a fraction.
- 16:02Your heart was drawn to the political Messiah, the Redeemer
- 16:07of the oppression from foreign nations, the prosperity that was
- 16:13once known under Solomon's reign.
- 16:15Perhaps this is what you were drawing, and that was a that was
- 16:18a common problem for all the Jews.
- 16:19Some people are sympathetic towards the Pharisees because
- 16:21they thought, well, maybe maybe the word of God was a little bit
- 16:23complicated, and that's why they didn't understand all that Jesus
- 16:26said. That's not true.
- 16:29And that's that's that's what we see here with Christ.
- 16:31He blames them. The scriptures were clear.
- 16:35You just chose to turn your eyes away from all that God had to
- 16:41say. About myself and I think the
- 16:44problem for the Jews is the problem of many Christians
- 16:46today. Let me put it this way.
- 16:49There is much confusion, frustration, depression, dare I
- 16:53say, and all these spiritual maladies based on one main
- 17:01thing, a bad spiritual diet with.
- 17:05The word of God. What's the reason why they were
- 17:09sad? Jesus made it clear you didn't
- 17:12take in all that God said. Just some, not all.
- 17:18And we look across the lens and we see perhaps very weak
- 17:22Christians. We see people who are
- 17:25frustrated, people who are roller coaster with their
- 17:28devotion. And I would say that the main
- 17:31cause is the very same reason what Jesus brings up here.
- 17:35A lack of willingness to embrace all that God has to say, a lack
- 17:40of willingness to investigate all that God has to say.
- 17:44And because of that, there is weakness where there doesn't
- 17:48need to be weakness. And there was sadness where
- 17:51there doesn't need to be sadness, and there's brokenness
- 17:53where there doesn't need to be brokenness, and there's fear
- 17:56where there doesn't need to be fear.
- 17:59The word of God is the answer. Say prove it.
- 18:03Look what Jesus does. How does he solve this?
- 18:05How does he treat this wound? Verse 27 This is what Pastor
- 18:11Jesus does. And beginning with Moses and all
- 18:14the prophets, he interpreted to them and all the scriptures the
- 18:19things concerning himself. How does the Lord treat their
- 18:23sadness? He opens the scriptures to them
- 18:28because he knew that the reason why they were sad is because
- 18:30they didn't open up all the scriptures for themselves.
- 18:35And so let us save ourselves from unnecessary pain and seek
- 18:41to know all that God has to say. That's my prayer.
- 18:44That's my desire. And I hope that's your desire
- 18:45for yourself as well, that you would leave this place excited
- 18:49to know that God speaks through this and that something happens.
- 18:53The more you discover, the more you inherit, the more that you
- 18:57glean something happens to you. Let me prove it to you.
- 19:00This is my last verse. And James, this is one of my
- 19:04favorite verses concerning the power.
- 19:05Of the word of God. I quoted often, so forgive me if
- 19:08you're hearing it again in such a short span of time.
- 19:11Look at these words from James and James, Chapter One.
- 19:17And this was where we will sign off for this introduction.
- 19:20James one and look here with me in verse verse 21.
- 19:27James 121 therefore put away all filthiness and rampant
- 19:32wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word
- 19:37which is able to save your souls.
- 19:41What is significant charge? Receive the implanted world.
- 19:45If it's implanted, it's already received, isn't it?
- 19:48What are you asking me to do, James?
- 19:50Continue to receive that which you received initially in
- 19:53salvation. Continue to open up your heart
- 19:57to indulge and accept and explore what the word of God has
- 20:03to say, and notice what he says which is able to save your
- 20:06souls. He's talking to Christians.
- 20:08What do you mean, save your souls?
- 20:11You're already saved. Yeah, but there's another saving
- 20:13that needs to take place. A continual saving, a perpetual
- 20:16delivering in your life. You know it, right?
- 20:19You know that when you get saved, you're not instantly made
- 20:21perfect. Join a local church and you'll
- 20:24figure that out within a few months.
- 20:28Nobody is. And yet there is a promise.
- 20:33There is a guarantee that to the degree that you expose yourself
- 20:37and receive the word of God, you will know as saving in your own
- 20:42soul. From trauma, from
- 20:45disappointment, from sin, from wrong world views, from
- 20:50temptation, from bondage, from strongholds.
- 20:54It's the word of God that saves and cleanses and washes and
- 20:58uproots all the things that perhaps you've had from the
- 21:02earliest memories of your life. That's the word, and that's what
- 21:05it can do. So here's one thing that we can
- 21:07guarantee. Here's one thing that you can
- 21:08guarantee every single time you go to the word of God for
- 21:11yourself that you sit under the preach word.
- 21:13And This is why this weekend is excited.
- 21:15Because we have a condensed time where you're just going to
- 21:17receive the word of God as those coming from a fire hydrant.
- 21:22People are going to be saved. If it's received with meekness,
- 21:26we will know it's saving. I'm not talking about salvation,
- 21:30I'm talking about a renewing of the mind.
- 21:32I'm talking about a redirecting in your affections.
- 21:34I'm talking about an empowerment that will make you leave this
- 21:38place stronger than you came in. That's what the Word of God can
- 21:42do. And we're going to see it
- 21:44through Jesus saying something greater than Solomon is here.
- 21:50What does that mean, Lord? We're going to figure it out
- 21:52together. Let's pray, Father, we give you
- 22:02glory even from the opening night.
- 22:06Thank you for the joy in this place.
- 22:08Thank you for the openness in the hearts of every soul in this
- 22:11House. Thank you, Lord, for people who
- 22:14decided to take up this weekend. Though it might be a difficult
- 22:17weekend in the year to dedicate few days to be with God's people
- 22:22and to seek the God of these people.
- 22:25We asked, Lord, that we would know the very saving that you
- 22:28promised in James that we would know a new ambition to have a
- 22:32complete grasp, a growing grasp with the word of God, so that we
- 22:37would be rescued from unnecessary sorrows.
- 22:42And, Lord, we asked from the beginning that by the power of
- 22:45your Holy Spirit you would open our eyes to behold how Christ,
- 22:50your Son, is greater than that great man's Solomon.
- 22:53It may cause us to give him the worship and the honor and the
- 22:56praise that the King of Kings rightly deserves.
- 23:00Lord, bless our hearts, our minds, protect us from head to
- 23:04toe. Let everything about this
- 23:05weekend, from the messages to the singing, to the activities
- 23:08to the eating. May it all be led by your
- 23:11spirit. May we sense your presence
- 23:13wherever we go, for we are here for you above all else.
- 23:17In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 23:19Amen. Amen.
