- 0:00It's Friday, the 1st of May. Welcome to Five Things Friday UK
- 0:05edition. Good morning.
- 0:19Good. Morning.
- 0:21I'm good. How are you?
- 0:23Yeah, really good. I've, I've been around the world
- 0:25and I, I, I've found my baby now I've been to person.
- 0:28I'm back in Madrid. It's been a fantastic week.
- 0:31We're short on time. For those who don't know you,
- 0:34Simone, who are you and what do you do?
- 0:37Hi everybody. I'm Simone Lee, Co Founder and
- 0:39CEO of Meet Up for Tonight, Also has nerfed.
- 0:41We've built the infrastructure that is powering instant
- 0:44delivery for retail in two ways. One is our marketplace app,
- 0:48think delivery for fashion. And 2nd, we also plug into
- 0:52retailers checkouts to give them a rapid delivery.
- 0:56Fantastic. Thank you.
- 0:57We're going to jump straight in. If we start with you, Simone,
- 1:01what's top of mind? What are the top, well, top 2
- 1:03three things on your radar this week?
- 1:06Yeah, I wanted to do a bit of a shout out this week.
- 1:08This one's a bit of a different one.
- 1:10I went to an events at a store in Hackney in East London called
- 1:17Positive Retail. It was Dalby Events.
- 1:20It's got a fashion community called Bread Tomorrow and the
- 1:24founder, Anna of Positive Retail was being interviewed.
- 1:27And honestly, it was one of those conversations that reminds
- 1:31you that retail can evolve in a better direction.
- 1:34So I just wanted to talk through what positive retail actually
- 1:36do. So I think it's really
- 1:38interesting from a retailer side, but also customers.
- 1:41So Anya, and she was working for mainstream fashion for years.
- 1:45Brands like Top Shot, Whistles, LK Bennett comes from a buying
- 1:49background. And all the time she saw two
- 1:52things. One is the huge problem of mass
- 1:55overproduction, which we've all spoken about.
- 1:59And then the other is the obsession with discounting.
- 2:03And the two are obviously connected because we're
- 2:06producing far too much stock. And then customers con
- 2:09constantly want markdowns on sales and endless promotions.
- 2:12And retail became this race to the bottom, more product, low
- 2:16prices and more waste. And So what Anna does is she has
- 2:20created positive retail. So she's got 5 stores, one in
- 2:23London, one in market. I can't remember the other
- 2:26areas, a lot of seaside towns. And she works with brands like
- 2:30Danny Dance, Madder Whistles Wax, which had Gucci in there as
- 2:36well. And she but the stock that they
- 2:40can't sell, she gives it another life instead of having this
- 2:44discount culture. And she describes herself as a
- 2:47posh TK Maxx, which I absolutely loved.
- 2:50And it feels like that because I do love TK Maxx.
- 2:54I do like going in there and finding a bargain, but it is
- 2:57quite chaotic. You kind of feel like you're
- 2:59finding a diamond in the rough. Whereas her stores are
- 3:02beautifully curated and, you know, because, yeah, consumers
- 3:08still want fashion and discovery and curation.
- 3:11So, yeah, really, really loved what she was doing.
- 3:15So I just wanted to give it a little shout out the posh TK
- 3:17Maxx. Yeah, OK, cool.
- 3:19And it's here. I mean, obviously TK Maxx, TK
- 3:22Maxx is all around discovery. I think that's your first entry.
- 3:26And the way you're describing it, it's curated discovery.
- 3:30So yeah, go find something new. But it's beautifully curated
- 3:33where, you know, we all at points look at TTK Maxx at like
- 3:37530 on a on a Saturday evening and I'm not going through that
- 3:42anyway. Another retail moment that
- 3:44caught my eye this week was the Long Champ pop in Sloan Square
- 3:50in London. And it's another example of
- 3:54something I feel like I've talked about a lot of them here
- 3:57is that retail is becoming more experienced than just
- 4:01transactional. But as you can see here, Long
- 4:04Champ have basically turned this space in small square into this
- 4:08kind of beach club style activation with DJs, drinks,
- 4:13games, workshops. He knows everything.
- 4:18But yeah, it's giving that summer holiday energy really
- 4:21built around the brand. And you know, the reason why I
- 4:24love stuff like this and I really think that it matters is
- 4:26because physical retail has to give the something that the
- 4:30Internet can't. You know, you can buy a bag
- 4:32online in about 10 seconds. But what you can't replicate
- 4:35online is the atmosphere, the discovery or just just stumbling
- 4:39in into something that actually feels memorable.
- 4:42So I wanted to give a little shout out to Lamp.
- 4:45Oh, fantastic. I mean, emotion, feeling,
- 4:48connection. It's there until the 12th of
- 4:51May, and I think it's really cool.
- 4:54So OK. And then you said something
- 4:56about Claire's. What's happening with Claire's?
- 4:57Yeah, I just wanted to briefly mention Claire's because I know
- 5:02we've chatted before about Claire's and the closure and
- 5:05this whole feeling of, you know, nostalgia isn't going to
- 5:10necessarily get the the customers in.
- 5:12But what I have been reading is Claire's is set to return to the
- 5:17UK high streets from next month and they are anticipating to
- 5:21open 50. Stalls.
- 5:24Oh, fantastic. All right, yeah, yeah.
- 5:26I mean, look, anyone who works in retail and has had to go
- 5:29through the the the stress of stores closing and then do I
- 5:35have a job? Do I not have a job?
- 5:36And then it opening up is, is good news.
- 5:39Obviously. I I think, yeah, it's, it's a
- 5:42good thing. It's not a bad thing.
- 5:44So I will jump in and talk about my week.
- 5:47Brilliant. So this week I was at World
- 5:48Retail Congress. That's Alex Alcock from Curry's,
- 5:52who I didn't realise he's stepping down.
- 5:54What do we tell Congress if you don't know it?
- 5:57Every year it's in a different city.
- 5:59So Paris, London last year and this year was in Berlin,
- 6:04absolutely knocked out of the park.
- 6:06Fantastic conference. It's basically where CEOs go to
- 6:09learn and hang out with their mates, right?
- 6:12So it was really interesting listening to CEO's from their
- 6:17perspective talk about the future of retail from an AI
- 6:20perspective, about customer experience, about engagement.
- 6:24Absolutely loved it. Obviously made a new best
- 6:26friend. And for those who know, that's
- 6:29the wonderful Jose from ASOS. He's the CEO of ASOS.
- 6:32You know, we obviously got to hang out, like didn't get a
- 6:35chance of saying, hey man, lovely stuff, lovely to come on
- 6:38the show. He says, well, I don't really do
- 6:40shows, but here's my contact and I said that we talk about you
- 6:43guys literally every week. And he mentioned his whole Asos
- 6:47and Adidas, how that just sold out, right?
- 6:50That collaboration and how they're doing more collaboration
- 6:53and how they're just building from strength to strength.
- 6:56And you know, maybe another time I'll talk about his talk or you
- 7:00can go to retail news dot AI for the full transfer for the full
- 7:03talk. But you know, that was it one
- 7:05thing I had for you that a lot of people spoke about this and I
- 7:10don't know how I feel. So a lot of people kept saying
- 7:14Reddit is the place where all the AI engines are being taught
- 7:21on Reddit, but I don't actually like the platform, you know, I
- 7:25think it's just the bloody like, who has time to go and do
- 7:29community connection so. You'd be surprised.
- 7:33You'd be surprised. Go to Reddit.
- 7:35No, but I know a lot of people do.
- 7:38I think, yeah, it's, I still haven't figured out what the
- 7:44Reddit demographic is, but I'm not.
- 7:49It's strange, I know, but people are using it.
- 7:52People are going there for advice, be it fashion or where
- 7:55do I go for food or my next holiday or advice on my
- 8:00girlfriend. People are using it.
- 8:04Men are using it. It's fascinating.
- 8:08Yeah, and and and basically the reason why this kept coming up
- 8:11is all of the AI models are training their dancer on Reddit.
- 8:16But then I was thinking, are you training your and maybe I've got
- 8:19this completely wrong on a demographic that is 18 to 25.
- 8:24Nope, doesn't know a lot and hence why it's going to
- 8:26community right now. I think demographic.
- 8:30Is different from that. I think the Reddit demographic
- 8:34is very wide. Yeah, OK.
- 8:39It's really interesting, but enough, I was at an AI talk this
- 8:42week with the Business of Fashion and they mentioned just
- 8:44that. Yeah, really, really interesting
- 8:49you. Know what it feels like because
- 8:50no one's on Reddit, sorry, no one who works is on Reddit.
- 8:53Then everyone says everyone's on Reddit or on sub stack and I'm
- 8:57like, I know like. Sub stack but like I might need
- 9:00to do a little Bolton poll on my LinkedIn.
- 9:02Who here is using Reddit? I need to know.
- 9:06Seriously. Using it, Google.
- 9:08Yeah, it's like John. And then here's my frustration
- 9:11with it. Every time I search the content
- 9:13Google gives me the the if Sarah thinks this then I go to the
- 9:17thread and there's like 4 bloody things and there's you know, I
- 9:21end up going back to Google and then searching for whatever I
- 9:24want. I don't know it and maybe it's
- 9:27AUS thing where in the US everyone uses it but I don't, I
- 9:32can be completely wrong. I don't believe so.
- 9:34But anyway it's the matter. While I was there they took us
- 9:37to two stores over at England one time.
- 9:39One of them was action. Do you know action?
- 9:41I don't. So Action is like BM, they're
- 9:44not going to come into the UK market.
- 9:46They are European. They've got, I can't remember
- 9:48thousands of stores. But the most interesting thing
- 9:52about Action is they are like a central hub, old school Excel
- 9:58spreadsheet keep everything so frugal.
- 10:02Like they are the most frugal company in the world when it
- 10:05comes to to retail and they're not shy about it.
- 10:09Why? Because all of the savings
- 10:11they're put into the product for the customers, right?
- 10:13So the other thing that was really interesting, something
- 10:17like between 90 and 95% of their skews are the same across the
- 10:22whole of Europe, right? And so there, and what was
- 10:27really interesting for me, someone in the audience said,
- 10:29what about AI? And they were like, well, what
- 10:32about AI? They're like, well, how is AI
- 10:34going to help your business? You know, look in Germany, they
- 10:37have three people in finance. They are already optimised to
- 10:42the NTH degree, which made me think is like is all AI is going
- 10:47to do is get rid of that fluff that has been created.
- 10:51And we're just going to go back to like, you know, as, as, as
- 10:54the guy from Action who runs Germany was saying, you know,
- 10:59one of our stores serves 40,000 people.
- 11:03We don't need more technology, right?
- 11:06We know the skews that are working because they're selling
- 11:09and we get that back. Yeah.
- 11:11And it was just like a, it wasn't anti technology, anti AI,
- 11:15but they the other really incredible thing, they are
- 11:18opening 1 store a day, right. So everyday 1 store is being
- 11:24opened somewhere in Europe. And it's just like, so it's not
- 11:28like this small company saying this is really large general
- 11:33merchandise, saying, you know, frugality is fantastic.
- 11:37Keeping everything in central store operations is really key.
- 11:41And is that the model of the future?
- 11:43Yeah, it it feels like their operating model is what people
- 11:46are working towards. Right.
- 11:48OK, sorry. The other one that took us on
- 11:50was Obi, which is like B&Q. This is every mascot, but the
- 11:54thing I really loved about German and in the sense like
- 11:58this is grow your own garden, right?
- 12:00So cucumbers, herbs, everything. But that was causes own last
- 12:04one. This was live shopping there
- 12:07that they were sure QVC were there and I thought QVC has gone
- 12:09through some transformation. But anyway, they were there
- 12:12showing their live stream capabilities, which is where
- 12:15they're moving into coming away from traditional media.
- 12:18Again, an interesting play on that.
- 12:20I have no idea if we've covered 5 things, but I'm going to keep
- 12:24us to. We've covered enough.
- 12:27We covered enough. Yeah, keep it to our thing.
- 12:30What you got planned for next week?
- 12:33Next week, next week, is it pulse Next week or is that the
- 12:37week after are you going to pulse?
- 12:39No, no, I've got, I'm going to be NRF.
- 12:43So NRF Europe. We've got a partnership.
- 12:46I'm going to be, we've just done Madrid yesterday.
- 12:49We're going to be in London on May 19th.
- 12:52If you're a retailer and want to come along, let me know.
- 12:55We're going to then go to Milan and then we're going to do
- 12:57Amsterdam. And at each one we're looking at
- 13:01the store of the future, meeting retailers, associations and
- 13:06basically creating a path to September where they will be in
- 13:11Paris, NRF Europe. So I had a, I've had a fantastic
- 13:15week. He's been busy, but it's been
- 13:16brilliant. And Hoff, which was the store of
- 13:19the future for Madrid. Do you know Hoff the football
- 13:22brand? Yes.
- 13:25They have a phenomenal flagship store in Madrid, Cheesecake
- 13:29Coffee shop at the front, DJ Music installation headquarters
- 13:35off. It was just like amazing,
- 13:36amazing store. So there'll be more of that to
- 13:38come. And I interrupted you.
- 13:40Sorry. You're going to be at Pulse, you
- 13:41said. No, I've realised that's the
- 13:43week after. I'll be in London that week, I
- 13:47think all. The brilliant ones.
- 13:49Yeah, so who knows? And you've got new social media
- 13:53content, so if you're on Instagram, go over it's a.
- 13:57Nib Back to some exciting new content.
- 14:00Lots of space from what I saw. I already love it.
- 14:03Anyway, Simone, thank you so much.
- 14:05Thank you. See you next week.
- 14:07Bye.
