- 0:01Romans Chapter 9 Let us pray, oh heavenly Father.
- 0:11Lord, we are desirous to come into the holiest of holy places.
- 0:17God, I pray you'll search US, search our minds and search our
- 0:20hearts. God, we exalt your holy name
- 0:24above every single entity. God, in the entire universe.
- 0:29Father, you are high and lifted up above all things.
- 0:33God, you are the banner over our lives.
- 0:36Lord, you are the peace that we have.
- 0:39You are the provision that we have.
- 0:41You're the breath and our lungs. God Almighty, you're the
- 0:45provider of everything seen and unseen.
- 0:48God, you are our All in all, encapsulating everything that is
- 0:54good and Holy Father. And we pray that we will be holy
- 0:58God, because you are holy. And so Father, sanctify us
- 1:02today. Help us to consecrate this
- 1:04temple today. God, pray the name of Jesus for
- 1:08many to come into salvation today.
- 1:10There will be many whose eyes are open today for the first
- 1:15time, God, whose ears are unstopped today for the first
- 1:19time. Father, I pray that you'll
- 1:21Father us well. Help us to step into our bridal
- 1:25identity. Help us to know that we're yours
- 1:28and you're fighting our battles, God, and that Lord, we only need
- 1:32you and you alone. God, we don't rely on self.
- 1:35We don't rely on anything other than your provision for us for
- 1:41today, the daily bread. Today, God Almighty, we pray
- 1:45that your will will be done here on this earth.
- 1:48Let us step into it. Let us get rid of any
- 1:51maliciousness, God, any deceit. Father, I pray against gossiping
- 1:57and backbiting. God, I pray against pride and
- 2:00vanity. Father, I pray, Lord, that we
- 2:03will be holy because you're holy.
- 2:05I pray that we'll be cleansed and purified, Father.
- 2:09I pray for an indwelling of the Holy Spirit to the fullness
- 2:13overflowing into the communities, Father, into our
- 2:16neighborhoods. Father, I pray that we'll be
- 2:19marked by your goodness and grace and mercy and love and
- 2:23joy. Father, I pray that it'll be you
- 2:26and you alone that we're here. For as we open up Your word
- 2:29today, let Your Word jump into our hearts and minds and let it
- 2:33become part of our DNA. Let it become part of our
- 2:37thought process is our psyche. Father, I pray that everything
- 2:41we see and hear today gets measured by the word of God.
- 2:45By your word, Father, spoken to us, Lord, that is alive and
- 2:49active. And so Lord, I pray for a
- 2:52greater measure of understanding today.
- 2:55Give a sound doctrine and sound theology.
- 2:58Holy Spirit, you guide us and teach us.
- 3:00Hide me and hide my words and hide my thoughts.
- 3:04Father, I just pray right now that you, Father, will have the
- 3:09last word that you will say whatever it is that you want to
- 3:13say to this generation. Lord, I get out of the way.
- 3:21I decrease as you increase. Holy Spirit, teach us, convict
- 3:26us, take us to new heights with ABBA.
- 3:30We love you, King Jesus, heal our bodies and heal marriages
- 3:35and heal families Today, God, help us to take our eyes off of
- 3:41sin and self and help us to lock eyes with you, King Jesus, sea
- 3:47of glass, mingle with fire. Father, we only want you and
- 3:52it's in Jesus Christ, holy and precious name that I pray, Amen.
- 3:59Let's start in verse one. I say the truth in Christ, I
- 4:06lie, not my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy
- 4:12Ghost. So you can see here that Paul is
- 4:16really wanting us to lock in. He's leading this chapter off in
- 4:22a very powerful way. He's saying listen, listen up,
- 4:29pay attention. What I'm about to say has a
- 4:34great weight to it. Let's see what Paul is wanting
- 4:39us to know. Verse 2 that I have great
- 4:43heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
- 4:48What is this heaviness and what is this sorrow that Paul is
- 4:53feeling? Verse 3 For I could wish that
- 5:01myself were accursed from Christ, for my brothers, my
- 5:06kinsmen, according to the flesh. So here He has painted this
- 5:15crescendo as we started off the chapter with Him making sure we
- 5:21were locked in, making sure that we knew that it was of great
- 5:26importance for us to understand what He was about to say.
- 5:30And then He told us there's heaviness in His heart and it is
- 5:33all for Israel. What an amazing lead off here in
- 5:40this 9th chapter. We're going to see for the next
- 5:43few chapters how God feels about Israel, the ethnic Jews, the
- 5:50physical, literal, geographical place on planet earth of Israel
- 5:55and Jerusalem. And it is such a hotly contested
- 6:01land there, and Christians, Jews and Muslims alike all consider
- 6:06it to be holy ground in there. There is no surprise there,
- 6:11friends. It is the navel of the entire
- 6:15globe. It is where life springs from,
- 6:20and that is what we're going to see here in this 9th chapter,
- 6:25the 10th chapter, and the 11th chapter.
- 6:28What you're going to find is that God has not turned His back
- 6:32on the Jews. And so much so that Paul says
- 6:36that he would be willing to go to hell and be damned for all of
- 6:41eternity, if it meant that Israel would come into the
- 6:46saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:54Verse 4. Who are Israelites to whom
- 6:59pertains the adoption and the glory and the covenants and the
- 7:03giving of the law, and the service of God and the promises?
- 7:09So you can see here this privilege of Israel, his God's
- 7:12chosen people, and he has a peculiar race unto himself.
- 7:17And you can see why they are held in such high regard.
- 7:22Paul gives us their pedigree. Abraham was chosen out of a
- 7:29Gentile nation to become the father of faith, to birth Isaac,
- 7:35to birth Jacob, also known as Israel, to birth the 12 tribes.
- 7:41And then out of the Lion of Judah, we see the Messiah arrive
- 7:47on the scene. And it is no wonder so many
- 7:50satanic attacks. It is no wonder we have seen so
- 7:56many attacks on the Jewish nation.
- 8:00And you can see that this persecution does not amount to
- 8:06anything because they're still around.
- 8:10The ethnic Jews are still in existence.
- 8:14They're not a land that has been dissolved into some other people
- 8:20group like many of the other nations that are named in the
- 8:24Old Testament. They're no longer around.
- 8:27Friends. Israel is still mainstream
- 8:32politics, mainstream news, friends, and that is the
- 8:37peculiarity of this chosen people group.
- 8:42And Paul is going to expound upon it, friends.
- 8:45He gives us this pedigree. God adopted them.
- 8:52God gave him his glory. God gave them covenants.
- 8:57God gave them the law, God gave them the service of Himself, God
- 9:02gave them promises. 5 Who are the fathers, and of whom?
- 9:07As concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God
- 9:13blessed forever. Amen.
- 9:15So he's saying that our Messiah came through the Jews, came
- 9:21through the Jewish nation, came through the Israelites, and we
- 9:26are eternally blessed forever and ever, Amen by the Jews, and
- 9:33because of the lineage to Christ, friends, and that is why
- 9:38we hold them in such high regard. 6 Not as though the word
- 9:48of God has taken no effect, for they are not all Israel which
- 9:53are of Israel. That is the same as saying not
- 9:58every person who calls themselves a Christian is a
- 10:01Christian. And that is what you need to
- 10:06know is that the Israelites did not understand that Jesus Christ
- 10:18had come and was their Messiah, is their Messiah.
- 10:23But we're going to see that they will one day.
- 10:26There are many of the Israelites who died without the saving
- 10:32knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ who will be eternally
- 10:35separated from God Almighty. And that is what is referenced
- 10:39here. It's not just because they are
- 10:42an Israelite and a Jew that they automatically get to go to
- 10:45heaven, get to go into paradise. No, and that is what Paul wants
- 10:51us to know. It is not just because of the
- 10:54lineage of the Messiah that they automatically get to go to
- 11:00heaven. And that is what is referenced
- 11:03here, friends. Seven.
- 11:08Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham are they all
- 11:12children. But in Isaac shall your seed be
- 11:16called. So we know that Ishmael was on
- 11:20the scene even though Isaac was the chosen.
- 11:25And so Paul is going to show us and paint a masterpiece of
- 11:30showing God's election and showing that God chooses for His
- 11:36purposes. And what you need to know here
- 11:41is that God has a purpose for the Jews and they will come to
- 11:51the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and they need not
- 11:55wait on another Messiah. He has already come, friends,
- 12:01and we are blessed forever and ever because we have that saving
- 12:07knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 12:09We have a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ.
- 12:14We are indwelled with the Holy Spirit and that is available to
- 12:19the Jews if they will admit that they murdered their Messiah and
- 12:24that Jesus is Lord. Hey, that is they which are the
- 12:33children of the flesh. These are not the children of
- 12:37God, but the children of the promise are counted for the
- 12:42seed. So we are the wild branches
- 12:44grafted in friends, to the natural.
- 12:47And here Paul is going to show us that just because you belong
- 12:53to Abraham does not mean that you're going to make it there.
- 12:599/4 This is the word of promise at this time will I come?
- 13:04And Sarah shall have a son. But she already had a son named
- 13:08Ishmael. And Paul wants us to see here
- 13:12that it was not Ishmael who was chosen.
- 13:18It was Isaac who was not yet even born.
- 13:21And by faith they had to take God at his word, that this
- 13:26barren woman who was stricken with age could even have a
- 13:32child, much less Abraham, becoming the father of many
- 13:38descendants more numerous than the stars. 10 And not only this,
- 13:45but when Rebecca also had conceived by 1 even by our
- 13:51father Isaac. 11 For the children being not yet born,
- 13:56neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God
- 14:03according to election might stand, not of works, but of him
- 14:07that calls. So here you can see that the
- 14:09children had done nothing good or bad.
- 14:13Esau was not rejected because of anything he had done, but Jacob
- 14:20was chosen for the purposes of God and that is what you need to
- 14:26know. And what happens a lot of times
- 14:28is just like Cain and Abel, whenever God says, look, sin is
- 14:34crouching at your door, you must master it.
- 14:38And then he tells them, if you do what's right, you'll be
- 14:41accepted. What you need to know is that
- 14:44when people find out that they're not chosen and they
- 14:50rebel in that reality, it just proves the point, Friends.
- 14:57God already knew that they would do that, friends, and that is
- 15:01why they were not chosen. God can see everything.
- 15:05He sees the full scope from start to finish, Friends, and it
- 15:10is not God who sends anybody into damnation.
- 15:13It is not God who sends anybody into hell.
- 15:17It is our rebellion, and it is our choice, friends, and it is
- 15:21out of envy that we murder. 12 It was said unto her.
- 15:32Unto her the elder shall serve the younger. 13 as it is
- 15:38written. Jacob have I loved, but Esau
- 15:41have I hated. Jacob have I chosen, but Esau I
- 15:46have rejected. And that is what you need to
- 15:50know. Friends, God gives us free will,
- 15:54but He already knows what we're going to do.
- 15:58And it is because of this election, friends, it is because
- 16:04of the promises of God, it is because of the purposes of God
- 16:10that He chose us. And we do not marvel that the
- 16:15demons are subject to us. We marvel that our names are
- 16:20written in the Lamb's book of life.
- 16:21When you finally come to the saving knowledge of the Lord
- 16:25Jesus Christ, you are astounded that He dwells inside of you and
- 16:31that you can know Him and be known by Him.
- 16:36It is a divine mystery and only God can reveal that to us.
- 16:41Fourteen. What shall we say then?
- 16:44Is there unrighteousness with God?
- 16:49God forbid. There's another God forbid
- 16:53moment as Paul is painting this masterpiece.
- 16:58There is no unrighteousness with God.
- 17:01God gives us free will. We can choose to serve him, but
- 17:05when we choose not to serve Him, and when we choose to send
- 17:09ourselves to hell, he already knew we were going to do it. 15
- 17:16For he said to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have
- 17:21mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have
- 17:25compassion. God is in heaven and does
- 17:27whatever he pleases, friends. 16 So then it is not of him that
- 17:34wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.
- 17:40And aren't you eternally grateful that God was merciful
- 17:44to you? Believer, isn't it amazing that
- 17:49you and I, we can know that we know that we know that.
- 17:53We know that our names are written in the Lamb's book of
- 17:57life. That is merciful.
- 17:59It is not of anything that we have ever done.
- 18:03Friends, God, if He was to judge us, we are deserving of hell.
- 18:12It is only by mercy, God's mercy, unlimited mercy, that we
- 18:19can come in to the throne room of grace, Friends. 17 For the
- 18:27Scripture said unto Pharaoh, even for this same purpose have
- 18:34I raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that
- 18:39my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
- 18:43So we can see here that God hardened Pharaoh's heart.
- 18:50So when you start to think about that, you would say, well, that
- 18:54means that Pharaoh is exempt and he should not be held
- 18:59accountable if God is the one who hardened his heart.
- 19:06But it does not work that way. It is very similar to the
- 19:09thought process that Judas could stand before God and say, look
- 19:13at all the good that came out of my betrayal, shouldn't that
- 19:19exempt me from having to go to hell for all of eternity?
- 19:24And it does not work that way. We have free will, friends.
- 19:30We choose to harden our hearts, we choose to betray our Lord.
- 19:36But God uses it without excusing it, friends. 18 Therefore has he
- 19:47mercy on whom he will have mercy, and on whom he will he
- 19:52hardens? 19 You will say then unto me,
- 19:59Why does he yet find fault, for who has resisted his will?
- 20:05And that is exactly what I just said.
- 20:08Friends, we cannot find fault in God.
- 20:12And we cannot say that there's unrighteousness in God, and we
- 20:15cannot say that the sinful man is excused because he performed
- 20:21the will of God, just like the Babylonians or the Assyrians
- 20:26when God was using them as instruments.
- 20:29It doesn't work that way. They must have to give an
- 20:32account. And our account reads like this.
- 20:35The blood of Jesus Christ, the righteousness of Christ, the
- 20:41innocence of Christ imputed on to us, friends, this divine
- 20:48exchange of all of our sins on him, but all of his
- 20:54righteousness upon us. That is how it reads.
- 21:00But for those who are trying to work their way into heaven or to
- 21:04give an excuse of why they should get into heaven, because
- 21:07they're good people. They were moral people, people.
- 21:10They gave all their riches away. They were humanitarians.
- 21:14They fed the poor that cast out demons in his name.
- 21:18They perform miracles in his name.
- 21:22There is no salvation in works, friends.
- 21:27It is only by the grace of God that we will enter in by the
- 21:31blood of the Lamb. We cannot say that God has
- 21:38fault, and we cannot say that because His will was done
- 21:43through evil man, that evil man will make it there.
- 21:47It is only by the blood of Jesus Christ that we will make it
- 21:50there. 20 Nay, but, O man, who are you that replies against
- 22:00God? Shall the thing form say to him
- 22:03that formed it? Why have you made me?
- 22:06Thus? This is where Job had to get to
- 22:10whenever he was trying to call God into the courtroom and to
- 22:19show God how good he had been and how upright he had been and
- 22:27how there was no sin that had caused all of this turmoil in
- 22:31his life. And then God shows up and he
- 22:35says, where were you whenever I stretched the line?
- 22:39Where were you when I formed the ocean?
- 22:43What did Job, what was Job's response?
- 22:46He put his hand over his mouth. He had said too much.
- 22:50We cannot call God into the courtroom, friends.
- 22:55All we can do is praise God that He is good.
- 22:58All we can do is praise God that He sent His Son.
- 23:02All we can do is praise God that He made away friends when there
- 23:05was no way. 21 Has not the Potter power over the clay of
- 23:15the same lump, to make one vessel unto honor and another
- 23:20unto dishonor? It's what you need to know here,
- 23:23friends. Free will.
- 23:26But he already knows what we're going to do.
- 23:29Just keep driving it home recitation.
- 23:33We keep driving it home, friends.
- 23:38That is how we approach election and free will friends is that
- 23:46they are two points of the same matter.
- 23:51There is this cooperative tension between them, and
- 23:56because we have the mind the size of a soda can, we can
- 24:00barely, scarcely try to skim the surface of what it all means in
- 24:06the mind of God whenever he already knows what we're going
- 24:10to do. He's the alpha and the Omega.
- 24:13He lives outside of time, friends.
- 24:15He's not bound by time. Like you and like me 22 What if,
- 24:26God willing to show his wrath and to make his power known,
- 24:31endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to
- 24:37destruction? Wow, he just went hard.
- 24:41He just went deep. Friends, lock in, pay attention,
- 24:45don't gloss over. Wake up.
- 24:47Oh, Sleeper, listen to what was just said.
- 24:54Listen up. God, in his long-suffering, he
- 25:01created the world. He put the serpent in the
- 25:05garden. He put the tree, a forbidden
- 25:08fruit in the garden. He gave us free will because
- 25:13he's so long-suffering. He knew that he would get the
- 25:17most amount of glory through allowing this free will.
- 25:22He would get the most amount of glory not making us like robots,
- 25:28not making us like the angels, not making us where we have to
- 25:33love Him and to serve Him. But when we choose Him in our
- 25:37free will and we don't have to choose Him, we choose Him
- 25:43because we love Him. That is what brings God the most
- 25:47amount of glory and he is long-suffering with all the evil
- 25:51in the world. Go back and check Genesis when
- 25:54it says that he grieve. It grieved God that he had made
- 25:58mankind because every thought continuously was evil.
- 26:02Then come up to the New Testament where it says the last
- 26:06days will be like the days of Noah.
- 26:09Friends. And then he asks, will he even
- 26:13find faith on the earth when he returns?
- 26:17And then he says that in the last days, because of the
- 26:22increase of evil, the love of most will grow cold.
- 26:26How long-suffering is God that He puts up with us when we rebel
- 26:33against Him, when we murder his children, friends, whenever we
- 26:36cause all kinds of disease and destruction and we create new
- 26:42ways of sinning? And God is so long-suffering
- 26:46with us, friends, because it brings Him the most amount of
- 26:53glory when we choose Him, and that is what he's after.
- 26:57And one man completely sold out to the Lord Jesus Christ is what
- 27:02this world desperately needs to see.
- 27:06Somebody who's not playing both sides, not the hypocrite, not
- 27:11being duplicious friends, but somebody who is truly loving on
- 27:17God and serving God with a whole heart is what this world needs
- 27:23to see. I pray that we can be that 23
- 27:36and that he might make known the riches of his glory on the
- 27:41vessels of mercy, which he had a four prepared unto glory.
- 27:48He already knows who's going to be there.
- 27:50Aren't all angels ministering spirits sent to protect those
- 27:55who will inherit eternal life? 24 Even us whom he has called
- 28:02not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.
- 28:06That's the wild and the natural together. 25 As he says also I
- 28:19will call them my people, which were not my people, and her
- 28:25beloved, which was not my beloved.
- 28:30So you can see here that the prophets foretold the blinding
- 28:34of Israel and mercy to the Gentiles.
- 28:37Friends, that is what you need to know, that their disobedience
- 28:43led to our salvation. But it is going to be the
- 28:47jealousy of the Jews seeing the Gentiles coming into eternal
- 28:53life that caused them to come back and admit that they
- 28:57murdered their Messiah and that Jesus is Lord. 26 And it shall
- 29:06come to pass that in the place where it was said unto them, You
- 29:12are not my people, there shall they be called the children of
- 29:17the living God. So there in Hosea, when he was
- 29:21having his children from the prostitute wife Gomer.
- 29:29You can see here this low army, you can see here that God had an
- 29:35eternal plan to bring them back where he had once said you're
- 29:39not my people. He will turn and say you are my
- 29:43people. And that is what we need to
- 29:45know, that in the seven-year tribulation, the Jews will come
- 29:50to the saving knowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 29:54And they're starting that now. You can see it happening right
- 29:58now with the rise of technology and the ability to get the New
- 30:02Testament into that land. There are many Messianic Jews.
- 30:0927 Isaiah also cried concerning Israel.
- 30:15Though the number of the children of Israel be as the
- 30:17sand of the sea, A remnant shall be saved. 28 For he will finish
- 30:23the work and cut it short in righteousness, because a short
- 30:29work will the Lord make upon the earth.
- 30:33So you can see here that God always saves A remnant, and in
- 30:37that nation Israel, in the ethnic Jews.
- 30:40What you need to know is that by and large they do not see Jesus
- 30:45Christ as the Messiah. But God saves A remnant, and
- 30:50there will be His chosen people with us in all of eternity.
- 30:55The church has not swallowed up Israel as some are in the habit
- 31:00of believing. 29 And as Isaiah said before, except the Lord of
- 31:08Shabbat had left us a seed, We had been as Sodom and been made
- 31:15like Gomorrah. And the Jews are still around.
- 31:18They cannot be exterminated, friends.
- 31:24There's no Holocaust that could ever result in the annihilation
- 31:28of them. God is going to bring them all
- 31:31the way to the end. Do not forget it. 30 What shall
- 31:38we say then, that the Gentiles which followed not after
- 31:42righteousness have attained to righteousness, even the
- 31:46righteousness which is of faith? 31 But Israel, which followed
- 31:54after the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of
- 31:59righteousness. 32 Wherefore, because they sought it not by
- 32:05faith, but, as it were, by the works of the law, for they
- 32:09stumbled at the stumbling stone. So we know that Jesus Christ is
- 32:18the stone that is cut out, but not by human hands.
- 32:23And all who will fall on Him will be crushed, will fall to
- 32:31pieces, but whom he falls upon will be pulverized into dust.
- 32:38All the wicked rulers will be put to dismay.
- 32:43God is in heaven, and he laughs at those who try to throw off
- 32:48the chains, who try to rail against him.
- 32:52But we need to fall on the Lord Jesus Christ and let him put us
- 32:57back together. Let him make us new friends. 33
- 33:04As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and
- 33:10rock of offense, and whosoever believes on him shall not be
- 33:15ashamed. Blessed are they that are not
- 33:19offended by Jesus Christ and all of His ways.
- 33:24Friends, He is the chief cornerstone, and there are many
- 33:30who have stumbled over that stone because they refused to
- 33:36come in the way that He has orchestrated.
- 33:41They want to work their way into heaven.
- 33:43They want to measure their salvation, and it does not work
- 33:48that way. It is Jesus Christ alone.
- 33:53Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one
- 33:58comes unto the Father except through me.
- 34:00He is not one of many ways, friends.
- 34:03He is the only way and he is alive.
- 34:06Today we serve a risen Savior. Praise God, Hallelujah.
