- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of saints Cornelius in Cyprian, September 16 in the year of our Lord, 2026. A note on the rubrics. In the older Missal, the September Ember Days were kept on the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday following September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. They also have the rank of greater but not privileged faria.
- 0:43Therefore, this year in our series following the pre-nineteen fifty five missile, all three September ember days are only commemorated with the last gospel of the prologue of John being replaced by the ember days gospel. In the 1960 rubrics, unlike the other three sets of ember days, the September ember days were changed to occur after the third Sunday within the month of September. They were also raised in relative rank to second class, meaning they almost always occur instead of being commemorated. This year, 2026, is one in which the September ember days of the 1962 missile occur the week following what they would have been before the 1960 rubric change, meaning next week. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following.
- 1:47Cornelius was a Roman and was sovereign pontiff under the emperor's gallus and volusion. He had to oppose Novation, the first antipope. He took from the catacombs the bodies of the apostles Peter and Paul and reverently translated them to the places where they had suffered martyrdom. He was arrested by order of the emperors and beheaded in the year of our Lord 253. Cyprian was a barrister at Carthage when he was converted to Christianity.
- 2:26A short time afterwards, he was ordained a priest and became bishop of Carthage. It would be superfluous, says Saint Jerome, to speak of his genius since his works are more brilliant than the sun. This illustrious father of the Latin church lived in one of the most troubles periods for the church in Africa. He was martyred five years after Saint Cornelius on the day when this holy Pope's remains were translated to Rome. That explains why their names are united by the liturgy at the canon of the mass.
- 3:10Today is commemorated Saint Euphemia. Of her, Monsignor William R. Kelly writes, Saint Euphemia, a virgin of Chalcedon, suffered in the persecution continued by the successors of Diocletian. About the year 03/2007, the Council of Chalcedon was held in her sepulchral church, Saint Lucy and Geminianus, two other martyrs who suffered in the same persecution are commemorated with Saint Euphemia. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 3:56Amen. The introit. Let the sighing of the captive, o lord, reach thy presence. Pour out sevenfold retribution into the laps of our neighbors. Take vengeance for the blood of thy saints that has been shed.
- 4:16O God, the heathen have broken into thy inheritance. They have profaned thy temple, thy sanctuary, and brought Jerusalem low as an orchard wall. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. Let the sighing of the captive, O Lord, reach thy presence.
- 4:52Pour out sevenfold retribution into the laps of our neighbors. Take vengeance for the blood of thy saints that has been shed. The Collect. Let us pray. May the festival of the blessed martyrs bishops Cornelius and Cyprian gain us thy protection, we pray thee, O Lord, and may their holy prayer win for us thy favor.
- 5:24A commemoration of Ember Wednesday in September. We beseech thee, O Lord, that our weakness may be upheld by thy healing mercy so that what of itself is falling into ruin may be restored by thy clemency. A commemoration of saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus. Grant, oh Lord, a joyful issue to our prayers. May we, who year by year devoutly keep the day on which thy holy martyrs, Euphemia, Lucy, and Gemini Annus suffered death, follow them also in steadfastness of faith through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 6:24Amen. A lesson from the book of wisdom. The souls of the just are in the hands of God beyond the reach of their tormentors malice. Dead, Fools think so. Think their end loss.
- 6:45They're leaving us annihilation. But all is well with them. The world sees nothing but the pains they endure. They themselves have eyes only for what is immortal. So light their sufferings.
- 7:04So great the gain they win. God all the while did but test them and testing them found them worthy of him. His gold tried in the crucible. His burnt sacrifice graciously accepted. They do but wait for the time of their deliverance.
- 7:31Then they will shine out these just souls unconquerable as the sparks that break out now here, now there among the stubble. Theirs to sit in judgment upon nations to subdue whole peoples under a Lord whose reign shall last forever. The gradual, glorious is God and his saints, wonderful in majesty, marvelous in his doings. How magnificent, Lord, is the strength of thy right hand, that right hand which has shattered the enemy. Alleluia.
- 8:21Alleluia. The bodies of the saints lie in peace. Their renown lasts on age after age. Hallelujah. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
- 8:42At that time Jesus said to his disciples, when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed by it. Such things must happen first, but the end will not come all at once. Then he told them, nation will rise in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes in this region or that, and plagues and famines, and sites of terror, and great portents from heaven. Before all this men will be laying hands on you and persecuting you.
- 9:28They will give you up to the synagogues, into prison, and drag you into the presence of kings and governors on my account. That will be your opportunity for making the truth known. Resolve then not to prepare your manner of answering beforehand. I will give you such eloquence and such wisdom as all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to confute. You will be given up by parents and brethren and kinsmen and friends and some of you will be put to death.
- 10:11All the world will be hating you because you bear my name and yet no hair of your head shall perish. It is by endurance that you will secure possession of your souls. The offertory. How wonderful is God and his saints. The God of Israel will give his people strength and courage.
- 10:44Blessed be God. The secret. Give heed, o Lord, to our entreaties in this commemoration of thy saints so that we who have put no trust in our own right doing may be helped by the merits of those who have won thy favor. A commemoration of Ember Wednesday in September. May our fasts, we beseech thee, O Lord, be acceptable unto thee, and by expiating our sins, make us worthy of thy grace, and bring us to thy everlasting promises.
- 11:30A commemoration of Saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus. Look favorably, oh, Lord, upon thy people's offerings and give us cause to rejoice in the protection of the saints whose feast thou art permitting us to keep through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee.
- 12:18Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
- 12:51Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 13:18Men saw only the pains they endured. God all the while did but test them. His gold tried in the crucible. His burnt sacrifice graciously accepted. The post communion.
- 13:40Let us pray. We whom this holy rite has filled with the bread of life, pray, O Lord, that we may be suckered by the prayers of those whose festival we are keeping. A commemoration of Ember Wednesday in September. In partaking of your heavenly gifts, we humbly entreat you, O Lord, that by your grace we may receive what through your bounty we perform in diligent service. A commemoration of saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus.
- 14:22O Lord, hear and heed our prayers. May the help of thy martyrs, Saint Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus, whose festival we are celebrating, bring us unfailing comfort through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Last Gospel. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
- 15:04At that time, in answer to his question, one of the crowd said to Jesus, Master, I have brought my son to thee. He is possessed by a dumb spirit and wherever it seizes on him, it tears him, and he foams at the mouth, and gnashes his teeth, and his strength is drained from him. And I bade thy disciples cast it out, but they were powerless. And he answered them, faithless generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I bear with you?
- 15:52Bring him to me. So they brought the boy to him and the evil spirit, as soon as it saw him, threw the boy into a convulsion so that he fell on the ground writhing and foaming at the mouth. And now Jesus asked the father, how long has this been happening to him? From childhood, he said, and often it has thrown him into the fire and into water to make an end of him. Come, have pity on us, and help us if thou canst.
- 16:41But Jesus said, If thou canst believe, to him who believes everything is possible. Whereupon the father of the boy cried aloud in tears, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. And Jesus, seeing how the multitude was gathering around them, rebuked the unclean spirit. Thou dumb and deaf spirit, he said, it is I that command thee.
- 17:23Come out of him and never enter into him again. With that crying aloud and throwing him into a violent convulsion, It came out of him and he lay there like a corpse so that many declared, he is dead. But Jesus took hold of his hand and raised him and he stood up. When he had gone into a house and they were alone, the disciples asked him, why was it that we could not cast it out? And he told them, there is no way of casting out such spirits as this except by prayer and fasting.

- 18:38Saint Lucy, pray for us. Saint Geminianus, pray for us.
