Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: UK Correspondent on Starmer's Ukraine announcement, fatal fire in North Macedonia
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The UK. We go and Gavin greg Good morning to
- 0:01Speaker 1: you either Andrew. Terrible fire in the nightclub in North Macedonia.
- 0:07Speaker 1: People killed and people arrested for courting it.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yes, that's right, I'm afraid really groomed death toll on
- 0:13Speaker 2: the rise. It's at least fifty nine people with ages
- 0:17Speaker 2: so far between fourteen and twenty four years old in
- 0:21Speaker 2: a nightclub, one hundred and fifty five injured, eighteen said
- 0:25Speaker 2: to be critical condition with burns. What we believe happened
- 0:29Speaker 2: is one five hundred people packed into and around the
- 0:33Speaker 2: Pulse nightclub in a town roughly one hundred kilometers east
- 0:37Speaker 2: of the capital of North Macedonia, towards the sort of
- 0:43Speaker 2: towards the border with Bulgaria, and they were there to
- 0:45Speaker 2: see a hip hop duo called d NK. Now, the
- 0:49Speaker 2: problem is it appears that during the concert there was
- 0:54Speaker 2: a pyrotechnic device. Sparks from that hit the ceiling, and
- 0:58Speaker 2: the ceiling was made of highly flammable material and it
- 1:02Speaker 2: just went up incredibly quickly, say our witnesses, and of
- 1:06Speaker 2: course there was a stampede for the exit, so it
- 1:08Speaker 2: really really awful. We believe the government is set to
- 1:11Speaker 2: declare seven days in national mourning and now demand urgent
- 1:15Speaker 2: inspections of all nightclubs and restaurants used to host large gatherings.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And yes, we do believe that four arrest warrants have
- 1:22Speaker 2: been issued and one person so far has been arrested.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It just reminds me of a story out of America.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And this is like twenty years ago Ben called Great
- 1:29Speaker 1: White were playing, They had pyrotechnics and a one hundred
- 1:32Speaker 1: people died. More than one hundred people died. You just
- 1:34Speaker 1: don't do pirate technics indoors, particularly in the smaller venues.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But there we go.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So apparently the United Kingdom is now into an operational
- 1:41Speaker 1: phase in Ukraine.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yes, so there was that phone call, wasn't there a
- 1:46Speaker 2: virtual call between hosted by the British Prime Minister, but
- 1:50Speaker 2: involving New Zealand, Australia, Canada, members of the Comnwealth, but
- 1:54Speaker 2: also nearly two dozen European countries too, with Japan as
- 1:58Speaker 2: well apparently set to offer assistance for what's being called
- 2:01Speaker 2: the Coalition of the Willing. What we mean, we mean
- 2:04Speaker 2: that if and when there is a cease far between
- 2:06Speaker 2: Ukraine and Russia, that the Coalition of the Willing really
- 2:12Speaker 2: does think there needs to be some kind of a
- 2:14Speaker 2: peacekeeping force on site. America says it's not convinced, but
- 2:18Speaker 2: plenty of people who simply do not trust Vladimir Putin
- 2:21Speaker 2: to stay out of Ukraine even after that cease far.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So we're going to, I think, get more details on Thursday.
- 2:28Speaker 2: We're due to have a meeting of military leaders to
- 2:31Speaker 2: put what are being called strong and robust plans in place. However,
- 2:35Speaker 2: I have to be honest Andrew, some of the details
- 2:37Speaker 2: on this are really sketchy. It all sounds promising, but
- 2:40Speaker 2: until there is actually this agreement, and then until the
- 2:44Speaker 2: coalition has got its act together with exactly what it's
- 2:47Speaker 2: going to offer, we won't really know how effective. It is.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Kevin Gray out of the UK.
