- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone. I am Chris Motionless from Motionless in
- 0:03Speaker 1: White and we have a brand new record July seventeenth.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It's called Decades. Check it out.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Fantastic Chris Siice for Johnny is today.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Here we are. I'm very excited.
- 0:14Speaker 2: So that's right, much.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Less in what release you demn studio album Decade on
- 0:17Speaker 3: the seven eighth of July, said Hey, you feeling this place?
- 0:21Speaker 1: Uh, it's just an exciting time. I feel like we've
- 0:25Speaker 1: been uh, we have been working for what feels like
- 0:30Speaker 1: literally forever on the record. So it's still very weird
- 0:34Speaker 1: for me to think that we even have like singles
- 0:36Speaker 1: out and now, like it's just it's just very different
- 0:39Speaker 1: shift of life. But it's really cool because you know,
- 0:42Speaker 1: finally the music gets to see the light of day.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yes, right, you can tell us a bit more about
- 0:46Speaker 3: the album from a musical point of view and what
- 0:48Speaker 3: you've gotten called.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It right, Yeah, you know, this one was definitely, as
- 0:54Speaker 1: every band's going to tell you, trying to look up
- 0:56Speaker 1: what we've already done and you know, catch your head,
- 1:00Speaker 1: ye blah blah blah blah blah. But it's true. You know,
- 1:03Speaker 1: we definitely wanted to make sure that everything that we
- 1:08Speaker 1: do that I think the fans love the most was
- 1:10Speaker 1: considered heavily on this one, and really wanted to try
- 1:14Speaker 1: to make sure that I don't know, that their feedback
- 1:18Speaker 1: was listened to, and that we were kind of integrating
- 1:20Speaker 1: what fans love the most and then what we love
- 1:23Speaker 1: most about the band, and I think that's maybe the
- 1:26Speaker 1: reason why things at least feel pretty positive so far.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So Yeah, yeah, you say.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Heavy, and you've been quite before a sign that it's
- 1:34Speaker 3: definitely heavier than your albums. But in terms of heaviness,
- 1:37Speaker 3: what does that mean, like, like lyrically, emotionally musically, I would.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Say kind of like a mixture of everything. I Uh,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I think the music maybe not so much like heavier
- 1:50Speaker 1: all around, everything's heavier, but there's definitely much more energy.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I mean there's so much more fast paced or just
- 1:59Speaker 1: like much more energy. I mean in every way, there's
- 2:04Speaker 1: only one sad emotional song per se, like like usually
- 2:09Speaker 1: we have like three or four, but this one's only
- 2:11Speaker 1: got the main one and the rest is just like
- 2:15Speaker 1: constant rolling energy that I think really helps the album
- 2:21Speaker 1: just feel different than any other emotionless record. And the
- 2:26Speaker 1: lyrical content, yeah, I mean it's some of it's heavy,
- 2:28Speaker 1: some of it's fun. It's a good mixture of everything.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that there's too much, like you know
- 2:34Speaker 1: you're gonna hear it and be like I got it.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I need a break from that. It's more it's more
- 2:40Speaker 1: meant to just be an exciting, very like uplifting experience.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Today, you released the singles Playing God at Breda Doc
- 2:48Speaker 3: and Rop So are they a good sunny representation of
- 2:51Speaker 3: the whole album or do you think they just scratch
- 2:53Speaker 3: your surface?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say that, you know, usually you want
- 2:56Speaker 1: your singles to try to be a good representation. They're
- 2:59Speaker 1: not going to cover everything. I think there's there's some
- 3:01Speaker 1: fun new stuff on the record that like you're only
- 3:05Speaker 1: gonna find in those particular individual songs. So yeah, I
- 3:13Speaker 1: mean it. I would say, like you're you know what
- 3:15Speaker 1: you're gonna get get with the three singles, Like there's
- 3:18Speaker 1: the heavy, there's the emotional stuff, there's the metalcore riffs,
- 3:22Speaker 1: there's lots of as I mentioned, the energy, like it's
- 3:26Speaker 1: set those songs set the stage for the energy to come.
- 3:29Speaker 1: So yeah, I would say they're pretty pretty close.
- 3:32Speaker 3: And you've got a couple of guest status on the
- 3:33Speaker 3: album with Corey l Anthony Martinez, and Scarlet Gray.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So tell us about the songs that they're on and
- 3:39Speaker 2: what they actually brought to them.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You think, yeah, I mean each one of those, each
- 3:43Speaker 1: one of those artists is pretty amazing at you know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: what they do. And uh uh, you know, when you
- 3:50Speaker 1: have someone like Corey Taylor on one of your songs,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it's it's kind of just like an unbelievable experience to
- 3:55Speaker 1: get to, like, you know, have this artist that you
- 3:59Speaker 1: are so inspired by an influenced by sing alongside of you.
- 4:03Speaker 1: That's just insane to me. And you know that that
- 4:07Speaker 1: song went from being like, let's say it was a
- 4:10Speaker 1: level eight heavy, now it's a level ten thousand heavy
- 4:13Speaker 1: because like he just went so nuts that it transformed
- 4:18Speaker 1: the song. And similar to with Rest in Peace with Skyler,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, that song needed to be a duet. It
- 4:27Speaker 1: needed to be, you know, the two sides of the
- 4:29Speaker 1: same story. And her voice just like it's just so
- 4:34Speaker 1: angelic and so amazing and soothing and haunting. And I
- 4:41Speaker 1: just think that that song would never be It might
- 4:44Speaker 1: not it might not have even made the record if
- 4:46Speaker 1: it wasn't for her singing on it, so yeah, pretty
- 4:50Speaker 1: pretty amazing. And then the same thing for Anthony, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: like really cool up and coming ish artists. I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 1: they've been around for a bit, but I wanted to
- 4:59Speaker 1: like Showcase is an artist that I believe in for
- 5:02Speaker 1: the next generation of bands like us, and each one
- 5:05Speaker 1: of them all has their own thing that's just like
- 5:08Speaker 1: so cool, and I'm on that they're on a record.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Even pretty open about having a difficult creative block early
- 5:15Speaker 3: and on the process.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Right, So looking back on a nasket, can you pinpoint with.
- 5:19Speaker 3: The one exact moment where it sort of came together
- 5:21Speaker 3: or one one bit of a song that you're.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Right, I'm not sure if it's like any one moment.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I think it's just a matter of like having taken
- 5:28Speaker 1: like we took our time with it. Like whenever there
- 5:31Speaker 1: was a big block, it felt like, why are we
- 5:35Speaker 1: going to torture ourselves and force this thing when it's
- 5:37Speaker 1: not ready? So we just stepped away and that sucks
- 5:42Speaker 1: because then the album comes out later, but it's great
- 5:44Speaker 1: because then the album is something that you like. Yeah,
- 5:48Speaker 1: So I think it was just a lot of like
- 5:50Speaker 1: realizing that like we just we just can't worry about
- 5:53Speaker 1: stuff that it shouldn't be the forefront of your thought
- 5:59Speaker 1: process on a album, Like I don't care if the
- 6:01Speaker 1: record took five years or however long to come out,
- 6:04Speaker 1: if it was the record that we wanted to put out.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And that's a cool place to be when you realize,
- 6:09Speaker 1: like as an artist that like you shouldn't you just
- 6:12Speaker 1: shouldn't give away anything that you're not happy with.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And yeah, since De Guy's opened through the crushing chattle
- 6:20Speaker 3: track made that's angry and full of enchant Like, what
- 6:22Speaker 3: was the thought process behind starting with that particular song.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of it's kind of similar to the singles,
- 6:29Speaker 1: where like you know when you put the song, when
- 6:31Speaker 1: you put the album on, I wanted people to hear
- 6:33Speaker 1: a song that just punched them in the face right away.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Like I needed people to feel like they just got
- 6:39Speaker 1: their teeth knocked out and they're not like sits the
- 6:44Speaker 1: tone for just like I have no idea what I'm
- 6:46Speaker 1: about to hear, but I'm in, I'm ready to go.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So that's definitely the uh, the process of putting that
- 6:53Speaker 1: song first. I just there were a couple of songs
- 6:56Speaker 1: I thought could have been first, but that one was
- 6:58Speaker 1: just like, Nope, it's got to be got to be
- 7:00Speaker 1: super heavy.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're picked perfectly, Bra, but that the
- 7:05Speaker 3: follow us through the equally bro just don't called rugging
- 7:08Speaker 3: crash out.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Then you pull things back massively with our ip right.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It's such a momenttion shift in the.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Album that it really shouldn't work, but when listening to it,
- 7:16Speaker 3: it actually fixed in nice. Like as a band, how
- 7:20Speaker 3: difficult is it to integrate those sort of musics together
- 7:22Speaker 3: and make it cohes?
- 7:26Speaker 1: I think I think the magic is that we just
- 7:28Speaker 1: don't care, Like I don't, I don't care anymore. I mean,
- 7:32Speaker 1: of course you want to tell a story. Of course
- 7:34Speaker 1: you want things to flow and feel like the message
- 7:39Speaker 1: that you're trying to send. But I think I just
- 7:42Speaker 1: don't care anymore about like or didn't care for a
- 7:44Speaker 1: long time that you know, one song sounds like a
- 7:48Speaker 1: slow song, the other ones this synth wavy song, This
- 7:51Speaker 1: other one is a super heavy song, and so on.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's just cool, you know. I think I think at
- 7:55Speaker 1: this point fans sign up for that when they listen
- 7:59Speaker 1: to Motionless, so it doesn't bother me. And I just
- 8:03Speaker 1: felt like, you know, rest in Peace was a son
- 8:05Speaker 1: that I wanted to put where where we did and
- 8:08Speaker 1: give give like a tiny little break and then get
- 8:10Speaker 1: right back to it.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny because, like I appreciate and respect that
- 8:14Speaker 3: opinion completely, but as somebody who listens to a lot
- 8:16Speaker 3: of different albums, like I find that songs like that,
- 8:19Speaker 3: if they're putting the wrong place on an album, came
- 8:21Speaker 3: down down of places, and it often has, but on
- 8:23Speaker 3: yours it's just I didn't even didn't even blink where
- 8:26Speaker 3: it came on, and normally on my reason for the
- 8:28Speaker 3: skip button on the butt and say if you only
- 8:30Speaker 3: jagged it, you jagged it well, brother.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Your music transcends the multitude of genres, from metal to
- 8:38Speaker 3: hardcore to goth the doctor, electronic.
- 8:40Speaker 2: There's so much in there, mate.
- 8:42Speaker 3: But in the creative process, how difficult is it seeding
- 8:45Speaker 3: to get that balance right and sort of know when
- 8:46Speaker 3: you've gone too far one way or not far enough
- 8:49Speaker 3: in another.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think in our case, another part of this record
- 8:54Speaker 1: that was like an interesting creative endeavor was that we
- 9:00Speaker 1: just wanted to go to those places and take songs
- 9:03Speaker 1: too far and try and just see how not so
- 9:08Speaker 1: much writing for the album, but just writing the songs
- 9:11Speaker 1: for the songs and giving each song a chance to
- 9:14Speaker 1: become whatever it was going to be, and then decide
- 9:17Speaker 1: later if that felt like it was part of the
- 9:20Speaker 1: greater narrative of the record or the greater sonic, I
- 9:26Speaker 1: don't know, compilation we wanted to have. And it was
- 9:30Speaker 1: cool because, like, there are a lot of songs that
- 9:32Speaker 1: were just not good, but they were fun to work on,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and you know, you get to a certain point you realize,
- 9:38Speaker 1: all right, well that's not going to work here. Maybe
- 9:40Speaker 1: we'll come back and work on it another time. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: I think every emotionless record that we've had has had
- 9:45Speaker 1: songs end up being on it that we started working
- 9:48Speaker 1: on an album or two or three ago that we've
- 9:51Speaker 1: then circled back to work on again years later and
- 9:57Speaker 1: re explore it. So it's cool that you get to
- 9:59Speaker 1: like see where you left off and come back and
- 10:02Speaker 1: possibly hear something that works at that time.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Looking back, right, do you remember the first song you
- 10:07Speaker 3: ever heard one of those songs on the radio and
- 10:09Speaker 3: the way way?
- 10:10Speaker 2: And then what song was it?
- 10:12Speaker 1: I think it was our song America, which was on
- 10:18Speaker 1: I want to say the XM radio on Octane. That
- 10:22Speaker 1: might have been might have been the first one. It
- 10:24Speaker 1: was just cool because it was like, you know, we
- 10:27Speaker 1: we up until that point were like a really heavy band,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and we decided that we wanted to have some songs
- 10:32Speaker 1: that felt like just bigger reaches in the rock world
- 10:35Speaker 1: that were inspired by, you know, different artists that we loved.
- 10:39Speaker 1: So getting to hear that we had a song that
- 10:41Speaker 1: was like able to be on the radio was just
- 10:42Speaker 1: such a cool like whoa, you know, like every it's
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's like a dream part of a part of doing this,
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know, to have your stuff like on the radio,
- 10:52Speaker 1: like my parents could turn on their car run.
- 10:57Speaker 2: It's right, Crystal, Thanks very much for you. M right, Dick.
- 11:00Speaker 3: It's dropped on July the seventeenth, and I'll be lucky
- 11:02Speaker 3: enough to have a listen to it bro and absolutely
- 11:04Speaker 3: blew me away.
- 11:04Speaker 2: It's a fantastic flavor of music, mate, So congratulations.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Good luck, thank you. Yeah, I'm really really excited about it,
- 11:11Speaker 1: so thank you for the good energy.
