- 0:53If you understood any part of that introduction song, you
- 0:56probably guessed that today's episode is all about someone
- 0:59who's widely considered the greatest soccer player of all
- 1:02time, Pele. He was so famous that people
- 1:06sometimes called him the King of Soccer.
- 1:08Whether you're a soccer fan or you're just curious about
- 1:11amazing people from history, get ready to learn all about Pele's
- 1:15life, his achievements, and why he's remembered as a legend in
- 1:19the world of sports. Let's start at the very
- 1:21beginning. Pele's real name was Edson
- 1:24Aaron's do Nashimento. That's a pretty long name, so
- 1:28most people just called him Pele.
- 1:30He was born on October 23rd, 1940 in a small town called Tres
- 1:35Caracos, which means three hearts in Portuguese.
- 1:38That's in Brazil, the largest country in South America.
- 1:42At the time Pele was born, Brazil was already a country
- 1:45where people love soccer, which is called Foot Bowl in
- 1:48Portuguese. Pele grew up in a poor family.
- 1:51His father, Don Dinho, was a soccer player too, but he didn't
- 1:56earn a lot of money. When Pele was little, his family
- 1:59couldn't afford a real soccer ball, so he and his friends
- 2:02would use a sock stuffed with newspaper or a grapefruit to
- 2:06play soccer in the streets. Can you imagine playing soccer
- 2:09with a homemade ball? That's real dedication.
- 2:12Pele discovered his love for soccer at a very young age.
- 2:16He learned a lot about the sport from his father, who taught him
- 2:19special tricks and skills. By the time Pele was just 10
- 2:23years old, people already noticed that he was really good
- 2:26at dribbling and kicking the ball.
- 2:28He was faster, more creative, and more determined than most
- 2:31kids his age. Did you know that Pele got his
- 2:34famous nickname by accident? When he was a kid, he
- 2:37mispronounced the name of his favorite goalkeeper, Bile, and
- 2:40called him Pele instead. The other kids tease him by
- 2:44calling him Pele, and the name stuck.
- 2:47He didn't like the nickname at first, but as he grew older, it
- 2:50became one of the most famous names in sports history.
- 2:53When Pele was just 15 years old, he joined a professional soccer
- 2:57team called Santos FC. That's right, he was still just
- 3:01a teenager. Imagine being in middle school
- 3:04and already playing with grown up professional athletes.
- 3:07At Santos, Pele quickly showed everyone that he was a star.
- 3:11In his very first game, he scored a goal.
- 3:14Soon he was scoring all the time and helping his team win
- 3:17matches. Let's talk about one of the most
- 3:20exciting moments in Pele's early career, the World Cup.
- 3:24The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament in the world,
- 3:27and it happens every four years. Teams from all over the globe
- 3:31compete to see who is the best. In 1958, when Pele was only 17,
- 3:38he was chosen to play for Brazil's national team in the
- 3:40World Cup held in Sweden. Most players at the World Cup
- 3:44are adults, but Pele was just a teenager.
- 3:47In the tournament. He scored amazing goals and
- 3:50helped Brazil win its first ever World Cup.
- 3:53Pele even scored a hat trick, three goals in one game in the
- 3:57semifinals and two more goals in the final match.
- 4:00People were amazed by how skillful and fearless he was,
- 4:04even though he was the youngest player on the field.
- 4:07Did you know that Pele is still the youngest player ever to
- 4:09score in a World Cup final? That's a record that has lasted
- 4:13for decades. After the 1958 World Cup,
- 4:16everyone knew Pele's name. He became a superstar in Brazil
- 4:21and all over the world. People came from different
- 4:23countries just to watch him play.
- 4:25Pele was famous not only for scoring goals but also for his
- 4:29style of play. He was creative, fast and had
- 4:33great control of the ball. He could dribble past defenders,
- 4:36make smart passes and score with both feet as well as with his
- 4:40head. Pele played in three more World
- 4:42Cups in 1960, two, 1966 and 1970.
- 4:48In 1962, Brazil won again and Pele scored important goals
- 4:52before getting injured. In 1970, Pele LED Brazil to its
- 4:57third World Cup victory. Many people say that the 1970
- 5:01Brazil team, with Pele as their star, was one of the best soccer
- 5:05teams ever. In total, Pele scored twelve
- 5:08goals in World Cup tournaments and played a big role in
- 5:11Brazil's 3 championships. No one else has won three World
- 5:16Cups as a player. That's a record that makes Pele
- 5:19extra special. Pele didn't just play for the
- 5:22national team, he spent most of his club career with Santos FC,
- 5:26where he won many championships. During his time at Santos, the
- 5:30team won the Brazilian League, the Coppola Birdidors and other
- 5:34important tournaments. Pele was always the top scorer,
- 5:37and he helped Santos become famous all over the world.
- 5:41Did you know that Pele scored over 1000 goals in his career?
- 5:45That's more than most professional soccer players ever
- 5:48dream of. In 1969, he scored his one
- 5:51thousandth goal during a match in Rio de Janeiro.
- 5:54The stadium was packed and when he scored, the crowd cheered and
- 5:58celebrated. Reporters from around the world
- 6:01came to see if he would reach the milestone.
- 6:03Pelle's one thousandth goal is still one of the most talked
- 6:07about moments in soccer history. In total, he scored 1281 goals
- 6:12in 1363 games. Let's take a moment to talk
- 6:17about Pele's playing style. He was known for being a
- 6:19complete player. That means he was good at every
- 6:23part of the game. He could dribble past defenders,
- 6:26make accurate passes, shoot with power and precision, and even
- 6:30defend when needed. Pele was also very athletic.
- 6:34He could jump high, run fast, and change direction quickly.
- 6:38This helped him score goals in many different ways, by
- 6:41shooting, heading the ball, or even using special moves that
- 6:45surprised goalkeeper. Pele was also a great teammate.
- 6:49He liked to involve everyone in the game and was known for being
- 6:52humble and respectful. Even though he was a superstar,
- 6:56he didn't act like he was better than anyone else.
- 6:59He often said that soccer is a team sport and that every player
- 7:03is important. After spending almost 2 decades
- 7:06with Santos, Pele made a big decision in 1975.
- 7:10He moved to the United States to play for a team called the New
- 7:13York Cosmos. At that time, soccer was not
- 7:16very popular in the United States, but Pele's arrival
- 7:20changed everything. Suddenly, more people wanted to
- 7:23watch soccer, and many kids started playing the game.
- 7:26Pele retired from professional soccer in 1977.
- 7:30After his last match, he thanked the fans and told everyone to
- 7:34say love, love, love to show how important kindness and respect
- 7:39are in sports. But even after retiring, Pele
- 7:42stayed busy. He became an ambassador for
- 7:44soccer, traveling to different countries to promote the sport.
- 7:48He also worked with organizations that help children
- 7:51and support education. Pele wanted everyone to have a
- 7:54chance to play sports and reach their dreams, just like he did.
- 7:58Did you know that in 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century
- 8:02by the International Olympic Committee?
- 8:04That's a huge honor, especially since Pele never even played in
- 8:08the Olympics. He was also voted World Player
- 8:11of the Century by the International Federation of
- 8:13Football History and Statistics. Many of today's soccer stars
- 8:17like Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have said that
- 8:21Pele was one of their heroes growing up.
- 8:24They watched videos of his games, practiced his moves and
- 8:27tried to be as creative and hard working as he was.
- 8:31Pele showed everyone that with practice, teamwork and a love
- 8:34for the game, you can achieve great things.
- 8:37Even though Pele passed away in 2022, his legacy lives on.
- 8:42People still talk about his amazing goals, his sportsmanship
