- 0:03What is it?
- 0:04How do we get it?
- 0:06And what happens when trust is broken?
- 0:10This episode is for you.
- 0:11If you're an HR representative, a corporate executive or someone who just wants to build a healthy, happy workplace.
- 0:20And when trust is not existent your workplace is not healthy and not happy.
- 0:26You're listening to Kathie's coaching podcast.
- 0:28I'm your host, Kathie Owen on this podcast, we talk about top workplace wellness and building a healthy, happy culture.
- 0:37One heart at a time today, we're talking about trust in the workplace.
- 0:41What is it?
- 0:42And how do we find it?
- 0:44I'll never forget.
- 0:45Thanksgiving of last year, we had a huge luncheon that was for everybody in the company, except for people who didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, which was not inclusive by the way.
- 1:00But what happened was the executives all sat at this one table at the end of the room.
- 1:07And everybody else sat in their different areas.
- 1:11And this was to celebrate Thanksgiving like a family, kind of, it was supposed to be a family style event.
- 1:20But what it turned into was a trust breaker.
- 1:24What do I mean by that?
- 1:26During this luncheon.
- 1:29The executive vice president got up and gave a speech.
- 1:33He had a slideshow in everything.
- 1:35But this speech was boring.
- 1:39Um, I think he needed to go to Toastmasters and maybe learn.
- 1:44How to communicate with your audience, but what happened was he was talking like he was talking to his board members to the entire team.
- 1:54At a Thanksgiving luncheon.
- 1:57This was not helpful at all.
- 2:00And he was talking about the intricacies of the business, what was happening, where money was going.
- 2:08And his audience lost attention right away.
- 2:12In fact people started talking amongst themselves and you could hear the rustle of the whole entire break room.
- 2:21It was.
- 2:24Awkward.
- 2:25To say the least.
- 2:26But what happened was the CEO decided she was not happy about people not paying attention to this boring speech.
- 2:37She got up and she stood at the table where people were talking, like she stood over him like a teacher.
- 2:46Oh, no, don't do that.
- 2:48Don't do that.
- 2:49And I think she even did this, like told them to be quiet.
- 2:55It was awkward.
- 2:57I'm going to say that a lot.
- 2:59But this is what happens when you lose trust in your team.
- 3:04Because this escalates even more.
- 3:07There's a snowball effect that takes place in here.
- 3:11The CEO got so angry that she ended up firing the people who were talking.
- 3:18During this meeting.
- 3:20Instead of holding up a mirror and looking at it herself and her emotional awareness and her teams.
- 3:29Not emotional awareness.
- 3:31That could have been prevented across the board.
- 3:35And today we're going to talk about how to.
- 3:39Prevent trust breaking because this, like I said, it was a snowball effect.
- 3:45It took place over the last couple of years, I would say over the pandemic years till today, and the snowball got bigger and bigger and bigger and they don't see it.
- 3:59Don't let this be you.
- 4:01And I've been doing research on companies on their workplace culture, and I'm finding that trust is one of the huge factors that gets lost across the board because people are being.
- 4:15Placed in a toxic workplace culture.
- 4:18And they're not.
- 4:20Being.
- 4:21Understood.
- 4:22They're not being listened to.
- 4:24And when this happens, it just makes for the company to lose top talent.
- 4:29Number one, number two, you're going to have quiet, quitting and presenteeism.
- 4:34Number three, you're going to have high turnover.
- 4:37And when you build trust and you build that trust in your team and your workplace.
- 4:44There's a shift that happens.
- 4:46Let's talk about that today.
- 4:48First step.
- 4:50Transparency in your communication.
- 4:53When employees are kept in the loop.
- 4:55They feel respected and valued.
- 4:59And that story.
- 5:00Did you sense the lack of respect and the lack of value in the team members?
- 5:06This was a celebratory luncheon instead of celebrating, we were being reprimanded.
- 5:13We were being forced to listen to something.
- 5:17That wasn't helpful.
- 5:19It wasn't helpful.
- 5:20It wasn't building trust.
- 5:22It was breaking trust.
- 5:24If you want your team to know what's going on inside the business schedule, regular updates, talk to them on a regular basis, go visit them in their departments instead of staying up in your office and not helping the team, not letting them feel heard and understood.
- 5:44And that story I just presented to you.
- 5:47The only people that were heard, whereas the executive team.
- 5:51Not the employees.
- 5:52The employees didn't even understand what was going on behind the scenes, because there had been no regular updates.
- 5:59Another way you can build transparency and better communication is encourage open dialogue.
- 6:08When you encourage open dialogue, you let the employees.
- 6:12Give their voice, their voices heard.
- 6:17Instead of telling them to shish.
- 6:20But he's trying to present something to you that they're not even interested in.
- 6:25When you encourage open dialogue.
- 6:27It builds trust.
- 6:29But you have to encourage it in a way where the team member feels heard as well as respected and valued.
- 6:39A great way to do this, especially if you've broken trust inside the company is to hold anonymous assessments and take a good look at yourself.
- 6:50If that company had held a, an anonymous assessment, they would have realized, oh, wait, I'm sitting at this executive table over here and we're going to be the king and queen of the company.
- 7:04And you're going to be treated like children.
- 7:07But if you took a look in the mirror and understood that you were breaking trust inside the company, by doing that.
- 7:14You're enabling the problem you're enabling quiet, quitting.
- 7:19When you do that.
- 7:21Number two active listening and empathy.
- 7:25Remember trust is built when employees know their voices matter.
- 7:31Schedule regular check-ins with employees.
- 7:34And ask open-ended questions and be ready to look in the mirror, if something does not feel right.
- 7:42And show genuine interest in their professional goals.
- 7:47And their wellbeing.
- 7:50I remember one time the president of the company came down and visited my best friend in her office.
- 7:57This was kind of rare, but he came down there and he sat on her desk and he had a talk with her and he said, Hey, what are your goals for the future?
- 8:05What are you doing right now?
- 8:06Because I envision you taking a higher position in the company.
- 8:12And I see that working for you in your favor, this was a big deal.
- 8:17And this was taking interest in her wellbeing and her professional development.
- 8:22When somebody in the higher up department or human resources actually takes.
- 8:29Interest in their employee's wellbeing.
- 8:31You're building trust.
- 8:33You're actually building trust and you're building the professional development that you want to see happen inside your company.
- 8:42When you don't care, they go to quiet, quitting.
- 8:46High turnover.
- 8:48And presenteeism.
- 8:49And finally.
- 8:50To encourage active listening and empathy.
- 8:53Acknowledge their concerns, even if you don't have the answers, acknowledge that they're feeling discomfort or they're feeling a little bit of fear because somebody is getting fired for talking during.
- 9:07A lunch.
- 9:09Meeting.
- 9:10This was a celebratory event.
- 9:14When you don't acknowledge their concerns or you just tell them, this is how to do it, you're going to lose the trust of your employees.
- 9:24I'm just saying.
- 9:25Did you know that I write a blog post on every single video?
- 9:29I do.
- 9:30I include it in the show notes and description below.
- 9:34And you can get bonus resources there as well as learn more about whatever topic we're talking about, which today was building trust inside your team.
- 9:47I hope to see you there.
- 9:49All right, let's get back into the episode.
- 9:51Number three ethical leadership and accountability.
- 9:54I'm just going to say this right now.
- 9:57Integrity is a non-negotiable.
- 10:00When it comes to building trust.
- 10:02And integrity comes from a place where it's kind of like what you do when nobody's watching or you feel like nobody's watching.
- 10:11Ethical leadership and accountability starts at the top.
- 10:15Starts at the top.
- 10:16But if you're going to hold everybody to that, you need to hold yourself to that as well.
- 10:22Ethical.
- 10:24And accountability.
- 10:25If you make a mistake, apologize, it goes a long way.
- 10:30Simply acknowledge that that happened and it wasn't right.
- 10:34And it doesn't help matters.
- 10:37And lead by example.
- 10:39Leading by example, fosters a culture of fairness.
- 10:44So when you're an HR representative and you're not leading by example, you're telling the team, Hey, this doesn't count for me.
- 10:54I'm not going to get in trouble for this, but you are.
- 10:58And.
- 11:00Okay.
- 11:00Let's say it's happened.
- 11:01Apologize.
- 11:03And.
- 11:04Take a look at yourself and see how you could improve for next time.
- 11:09And it builds a culture of fairness when you hold yourself accountable and you're also ethical in your procedures.
- 11:18Number four chief encouragement officer mentality.
- 11:22Zappos.
- 11:23I did an article on this not too long ago, and I think I'm going to do a video on it as well.
- 11:28If you'd like to see a video on Zappos, chief encouragement officer, please leave a comment in the comments below, and I'll be happy to do that, but they have what is called a chief encouragement officer.
- 11:42And this person is like a corporate wellness director.
- 11:45They foster trust and encouragement inside the team.
- 11:50They am fostered the recognition, the rewards, the.
- 11:55Honor of.
- 11:57Even working inside the culture, it's like a cheerleader for your team.
- 12:02Uh, chief encouragement officer can even like hold workshops on professional development, on leadership, on communication and build that inside your team.
- 12:14When your team members see you inputting professional development inside your programs, they see that, oh, they do care about my wellbeing.
- 12:24They do care about this.
- 12:25They do care about the things that I'm putting in this anonymous survey.
- 12:29'cause that anonymous survey can give you a lot of feedback on where things need to improve because we all need improvement.
- 12:38At some point in time, and this helps us understand where do we need to improve?
- 12:43What do they need?
- 12:45Because a leader in the department is bullying and harassing somebody to get what they want just because they're good at their job does not make that.
- 12:55Okay.
- 12:56And actually you're going to lose top talent.
- 12:59You're going to have high turnover when you have management positions.
- 13:04Bullying and harassing other employees.
- 13:07And not understanding what they need for their wellbeing.
- 13:11A simple solution to that can be a workshop inside the company to help develop emotional intelligence.
- 13:20Social awareness.
- 13:22How to talk to people when you need something done, instead of talking down to people, you communicate with them like adults.
- 13:32Number five.
- 13:33Fair and inclusive policies.
- 13:37Diversity is big across the culture.
- 13:40And here's something that I noticed.
- 13:43Happening with this company that had the Thanksgiving luncheon.
- 13:48Thanksgiving is not celebrated by everybody.
- 13:52A simple solution to that.
- 13:54That is not including these employees that don't celebrate Thanksgiving is taking Thanksgiving out of it.
- 14:02It can be a family luncheon.
- 14:05It's still Thanksgiving in your mind.
- 14:07And that's great.
- 14:09But if we just take Thanksgiving off the table, because I had somebody actually tell me they could not attend the luncheon because it said Thanksgiving.
- 14:18Okay.
- 14:19Take Thanksgiving out and they could attend the luncheon.
- 14:23It's that simple and being aware of where you include and be diverse inside your culture is so important in today's world and especially building trust inside your team.
- 14:39Uh, way to understand if you're not being fair and you're not being diverse and you're not being inclusive is through the anonymous survey.
- 14:50Ask the team.
- 14:51What do you want?
- 14:52Do you want to celebrate Thanksgiving?
- 14:54Do you, do you have an issue with holiday celebrations?
- 14:58Is there a way that would make it more inclusive?
- 15:02And do you feel included in all the activities we do around here?
- 15:07Where do you feel excluded?
- 15:10That's a great question to ask, because if somebody's feeling excluded, you want to know that because that is not being inclusive.
- 15:18And it would be just as simple as taking Thanksgiving.
- 15:22Off of the decorations.
- 15:24That easy.
- 15:25Number six consistent follow through.
- 15:28Trust is all about keeping promises and following through with those promises.
- 15:35On a regular basis.
- 15:37That's how you build trust.
- 15:39And when it's broken, you've got to be consistent and rebuilding that action that happens everywhere across the board, in friendships and relationships.
- 15:49If you betray someone and trust is broken, you've got to do consistent action to prove that you won't break that trust again.
- 15:59And that's how trust is built.
- 16:02It's that simple.
- 16:04Not easy.
- 16:05But simple.
- 16:06You can be clear on your timelines where you're trying to work towards.
- 16:10And deliver on those commitments.
- 16:13And acting on feedback builds trust.
- 16:17So those assessments I'll go back to them.
- 16:20When you find out what kind of feedback you're getting from the company, from the team.
- 16:26You understand what consistent actions you need to take to build that trust?
- 16:32And handle complaints consistently.
- 16:35Across the board.
- 16:37Across the board.
- 16:39You have somebody in cited department who's bullying somebody else that has a connection with the higher ups.
- 16:46This is not okay.
- 16:47You've got to nip that in the bud through those anonymous assessments.
- 16:53And once you know it, you can start taking action to start preventing that from happening.
- 17:00And take visible action so that the employees know their voices mattered.
- 17:06Here's an action that I would have liked to seen take place at that company.
- 17:11Instead of the executives all sitting at this end table.
- 17:16Go and disperse yourselves throughout the entire luncheon.
- 17:21Sit somewhere uncomfortable for you because that's going to show that, oh, I value your opinion instead of.
- 17:29I'm going to fire you because you're talking during a boring lecture.
- 17:34No.
- 17:34If you interact with your employees, guess what you're gonna find.
- 17:38You're gonna find where they're struggling.
- 17:41What they're having problems with.
- 17:43Maybe you can find something that would not even have been on your radar that you could implement inside the company to make it better.
- 17:52Your chief encouragement officer would definitely encourage this.
- 17:57And your chief encouragement officer is a great person to have lead a speech during this type of luncheon.
- 18:07Because that person is going to be qualified to understand what the team needs encouragement about instead of how we're running our business and how we're doing things.
- 18:19No.
- 18:20Well, let's encourage the team.
- 18:21Hey, it's almost the holiday season.
- 18:23I know you're having stress.
- 18:25Here are some stress management tips to help all of us across the board, including your family, which has a ripple effect and goes outside of the company.
- 18:36I work with a motivational speaker and I do motivational speeches myself.
- 18:41And what happens is people get all that encouragement going on inside that speech, but they don't finish implementing it.
- 18:51A corporate wellness consultant.
- 18:53Or a coach or even someone inside your company who is the chief encouragement officer or just your corporate wellness director can help your team.
- 19:05Across the board.
- 19:06And again, it's going to have a ripple effect that spreads throughout the entire culture.
- 19:12And inside their families, which makes for a healthy, happy team.
- 19:18And number seven.
- 19:19Continuous improvement.
- 19:21Trust grows when you show you're committed to improvement.
- 19:25Keep listening, learning, and adapting.
- 19:28Those three things.
- 19:29Keep listening.
- 19:31Keep adapting.
- 19:32And always keep learning.
- 19:34If there's one thing you learned from today's episode.
- 19:38It is taking assessments conduct.
- 19:42Continuous assessments for that feedback, because things are always evolving and things are always changing.
- 19:49And when you understand what's going on, What's the temperature of the team.
- 19:56You will see a major shift in your culture.
- 20:00And your turnaround.
- 20:02And you're quiet.
- 20:02Quitting.
- 20:04You will understand, you will even know who is quiet, quitting, because when you do those assessments, They will tell you.
- 20:11They will happily tell you this person is quite quitting you will even find out when they're goofing off, because those assessments, those anonymous assessments will tell you.
- 20:22Perhaps you don't want to hear it.
- 20:25But that's where the problem lies.
- 20:27That's why your team doesn't trust you.
- 20:29Invest in learning and development for your team.
- 20:33And yourself.
- 20:36Probably most importantly yourself, because when you start investing in that learning and development in yourself, It just spreads.
- 20:43It's the same ripple effect.
- 20:45It has that same ripple effect.
- 20:47I'm constantly learning and adapting and changing ways that I can improve.
- 20:54Team cultures.
- 20:55What helps with that?
- 20:57And what helps with myself as well, to become a better leader, to become a better speaker and help teams develop, help them understand where there's no trust where they're not having trust.
- 21:12And when you find out, oh, I have these leaders have four or five of them right here who are bullying people into doing their work.
- 21:22Because they're good at their job, but this is not okay.
- 21:26All it takes is a simple leadership workshop.
- 21:29To continually develop your team.
- 21:32So they understand how to kindly motivate the team in a way that will make your work even better, make your job even better.
- 21:43And finally actively work to improve policies and processes.
- 21:49Based on your employee input.
- 21:52If you don't take anything else from today's episode, take that.
- 21:59Take your active feedback from your team and find out what is really going on inside the culture.
- 22:06To prevent, lack of trust to prevent that disruption.
- 22:11And improve your policies and processes to constantly be building trust and be building a better culture.
- 22:21Like I always say.
- 22:24We build healthy, happy teams, one heart at a time, because you never know where that one heart is and how the impact of making an influence on that one.
- 22:36Heart can change the entire culture.
- 22:41As I said in a relationship that loses trust trust building does not happen overnight.
- 22:46But with transparency, empathy.
- 22:49And integrity.
- 22:51You can rebuild that trust.
- 22:52You can build a foundation that creates a thriving workplace.
- 22:58All right.
- 22:58That's my episode for today.
- 22:59I trust that you found it helpful.
- 23:01If you know someone who can benefit from this, please share it with them.
- 23:05And until next time I will see you next time.
- 23:08Peace out and Namaste.
