- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:14Wednesday, it's the 10th of January.
- 0:17It's hump day. You have reached the middle of
- 0:19the week and I hope your week is going well.
- 0:22Oh, it's warm in this part of the world.
- 0:24Summer is glorious down here in Tassie.
- 0:27Oh my goodness. The days are long and warm and
- 0:30sunny. It's almost enough to make you
- 0:34forget the other nine months of the year.
- 0:38I hope you're doing well. Whatever the weather's like
- 0:40where you are and when you're listening.
- 0:43So glad that you can join me. And together we can continue on
- 0:47the story of of God teaching, teaching his people what he is
- 0:53like as their king. And this part of the story, the
- 0:56people want a king of their own, that I want God to be their
- 0:59king. And so God has just identified
- 1:02the man who will be that first king and today he will be
- 1:06acclaimed king. So let us read this story
- 1:10together as we continue reading First Samuel, chapter 10.
- 1:26Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over
- 1:30Saul's head. He kissed Saul and said, I am
- 1:34doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler
- 1:39over Israel, his special possession.
- 1:42When you leave me today, you will see two men beside Rachel's
- 1:47tomb at Zelzar on the border of Benjamin.
- 1:51They will tell you that the donkeys have been found and that
- 1:54your father has stopped worrying about them and is now worried
- 1:57about you. He is asking, have you seen my
- 2:02son? When you get to the oak of
- 2:05table, you will see three men coming towards you who are on
- 2:09their way to worship God at Bethel.
- 2:12One will be bringing three young goats, another will have three
- 2:16loaves of bread, and the third will be carrying a wineskin full
- 2:20of wine. They will greet you and offer
- 2:23you two of the loaves which you are to accept.
- 2:27When you arrive at Gibeah of God, where the Garrison of the
- 2:31Philistines is located, you will meet a band of prophets coming
- 2:36down from the place of worship. They will be playing a harp, A
- 2:39tambourine, A flute, and a liar, and they will be prophesying At
- 2:44that time. The Spirit of the Lord will come
- 2:47powerfully upon you, and you will prophecy with them.
- 2:51You will be changed into a different person after these
- 2:55signs take place. Do what must be done, for God is
- 3:00with you. Then go down to Gilgal ahead of
- 3:04me. I will join you there to
- 3:06sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings.
- 3:10You must wait for seven days until I arrive and give you
- 3:13further instructions. As Samuel turned and started to
- 3:17leave, God gave him a new heart, and all Samuel's signs were
- 3:22fulfilled That day, when Saul and a servant arrived at Gibeah,
- 3:27they saw a group of prophets coming toward them.
- 3:30Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he too
- 3:35began to prophecy. When those who knew Saul heard
- 3:38about it, they exclaimed, what is even Saul a prophet?
- 3:43How did the son of Kish become a prophet?
- 3:47And one of those standing there said, can anyone become a
- 3:50prophet, no matter who his father is?
- 3:53So that is the origin of the saying.
- 3:55Is even Saul a prophet? When Saul had finished
- 4:00prophesying, he went up to the place of worship.
- 4:03Where have you been? Saul's uncle asked him and his
- 4:06servant. We were looking for the donkeys,
- 4:10Saul replied. But we couldn't find them, so we
- 4:13went to Samuel to ask him where they were.
- 4:16Oh, and what did he say? His uncle asked.
- 4:20He told us that the donkeys had already been found.
- 4:23Saul replied. But Saul didn't tell his uncle
- 4:26what Samuel said about the Kingdom.
- 4:30Later Samuel called all the people of Israel to meet before
- 4:34the Lord at Mizpah. And he said, this is what the
- 4:38Lord, the God of Israel, has declared.
- 4:42I brought you from Egypt and rescued you from the Egyptians
- 4:47and from all the nations that were oppressing you.
- 4:50But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress,
- 4:55you have rejected your God today and have said, no, We want a
- 5:00king instead. Now, therefore, present
- 5:05yourselves before the Lord by tribes and clans.
- 5:10So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel before the Lord, and
- 5:14the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.
- 5:17Then he brought each family of the tribe of Benjamin before the
- 5:20Lord, and the family of the Matrites was chosen.
- 5:25And finally Saul, son of Kish, was chosen from among them.
- 5:31But when they looked for him he had disappeared.
- 5:34So they asked the Lord where is he?
- 5:38And the Lord replied he is hiding among the baggage.
- 5:43So they found him and brought him out, and he stood head and
- 5:46shoulders above anyone else. Then Samuel said to all the
- 5:50people, This is the man the Lord has chosen as your king.
- 5:56No one in all Israel is like him.
- 6:00And all the people shouted, Long live the king.
- 6:04Then Samuel told the people what the rights and duties of a king
- 6:08were. He wrote them down on a scroll
- 6:11and placed it before the Lord. Then Samuel sent the people home
- 6:15again. When Saul returned to his home
- 6:18in Gibeah, a group of men whose hearts God has touched went with
- 6:22him. But there were some scoundrels
- 6:25who complained, How can this man save us?
- 6:29And they scorned him and refused to bring him gifts, but Saul
- 6:33ignored them. Nahash, king of the Ammonites,
- 6:37had been grievously oppressing the people of God and Reuben,
- 6:41who lived east of the Jordan River.
- 6:44He gouged out the right eye of each of the Israelites living
- 6:48there, and he didn't allow anyone to come and rescue them.
- 6:51In fact, of all the Israelites east of Jordan, there wasn't a
- 6:56single one whose right eye Nahash had not gouged out.
- 7:01But there were 7000 men who had escaped from the Ammonites, and
- 7:05they had settled in Jabbish. Gilead,
- 7:19you are a loving and passionate God, and if there is ever any
- 7:26temptation to see you as distant, as dispassionate,
- 7:30sitting on a heavenly throne, commanding with lightning bolts
- 7:35these words that you don't hold Israel as your people, but
- 7:40Israel as your special possession, you are a God with a
- 7:46big heart who loves and who just desires to draw your people near
- 7:53to you. And we are your people by that
- 7:58incredible gift of Jesus sacrifice that we are able to be
- 8:03your people and draw close to you, this most holy God.
- 8:09So we come to you and we surrender to you, and we dwell
- 8:14in Your amazing presence. And we thank you, we thank you
- 8:20that we are able to do this and that You love us and hold us
- 8:25close, and you will never let us go, not for all the distance
- 8:30that time can stretch before us. You hold us, We thank you and we
- 8:38praise you and pray all these things.
- 8:40In the name of Jesus. Amen.
