- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, It's this to Fox and this is the iHeart
- 0:02Speaker 1: so Cal Show. All right, So, pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer
- 0:06Speaker 1: has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Do you know that?
- 0:10Speaker 1: It's currently the third leading cause of cancer related deaths
- 0:13Speaker 1: in the US, after lung and colon But thankfully, the
- 0:17Speaker 1: fine folks of the Hirschberg Foundation for Pan Credit Cancer
- 0:19Speaker 1: Research at UCLA, they've been making major strides for decades
- 0:24Speaker 1: and work every day to change these numbers, to lower
- 0:28Speaker 1: these numbers, and to better improve the quality of life
- 0:31Speaker 1: for those of pan credit cancer, better improve early detection,
- 0:34Speaker 1: better ways to find out why people get it, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: better treatments for those who do. And then, of course,
- 0:39Speaker 1: ultimately the goal would be to find a cure. They've
- 0:42Speaker 1: got two major fundraisers during the year. They're bringing a
- 0:45Speaker 1: lot of money to help fuel what they do. And
- 0:47Speaker 1: this one's a biggie and this one's a fun one.
- 0:49Speaker 1: What you do in Sunday, October the twenty sixth, Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 1: before Halloween, why not grab the family, grab your friends,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and before everyone heads out the trick or treat and
- 0:58Speaker 1: gets all dressed up in your costumes, break.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Your costumes in the Sunday before.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Halloween at the twenty eighth Annuel La Cancer Challenge five
- 1:05Speaker 1: k run Walk. They're all about combining fun and purpose,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and the event welcomes thousands of runners and walkers to
- 1:12Speaker 1: the bootiful UCLA campus to raise awareness for pank Credit
- 1:16Speaker 1: Cancer Research. The LA Cancer Challenges sponsored and produced by
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Hirschberg Foundation for Pan Credit Cancer Research, a nonprofit
- 1:24Speaker 1: organization dedicated to ground breaking research across three collaborative laboratories
- 1:28Speaker 1: right there at UCLA.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So strapride your running.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Shoes and dash of Socal's most beloved Halloween charity race.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And the gal behind the whole thing is the executive
- 1:37Speaker 1: director of the Hirschberg Foundation for pank Created Cancer Research
- 1:40Speaker 1: and the LA Cancer Challenge.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's Lisa Mannheim.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I have to clap for you because every time we talk,
- 1:49Speaker 1: you know, we talk for your Tour to Peer, big
- 1:51Speaker 1: stationary bike fundraiser to fight cancer, and then this event,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like you're just working all the time.
- 1:57Speaker 3: All the time, fundraising all the time.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yes, yes, but it's a lot to put together a
- 2:03Speaker 1: big event like this where thousands are coming together to
- 2:06Speaker 1: make a difference.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It's great, but it's a lot of work.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 2:10Speaker 3: But this is our twenty eighth year of the LA
- 2:13Speaker 3: Cancer Challenge, which is really just hard to believe. Yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 3: so very fortunate to have a great team of people
- 2:20Speaker 3: who we've worked with for years and years, and we've
- 2:24Speaker 3: got it dialed in and we're almost halfway to our
- 2:28Speaker 3: goal of seven hundred thousand this year. So yeah, very
- 2:32Speaker 3: much looking forward to it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and like you said, twenty eight years doing this
- 2:36Speaker 1: and you know, cancer obviously not a fun topic. But
- 2:40Speaker 1: how you make this event so fun and family friendly.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I love the videos all over the website La Cancer
- 2:47Speaker 1: Challenge dot com. The videos, it just looks like a
- 2:49Speaker 1: big Halloween party where you know, a little running involved,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but also the fundraising and the spirit and an event
- 2:55Speaker 1: that people look forward to every year. For all twenty
- 2:58Speaker 1: eight years you've been doing this thing, they look forward
- 3:01Speaker 1: to it and they know they're going to have a
- 3:02Speaker 1: good time while making a difference.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that's absolutely true.
- 3:05Speaker 3: The key to the fundraising and the energy at LA
- 3:09Speaker 3: Cancer Challenge are the teams that come back year after year,
- 3:12Speaker 3: most of whom are there supporting a loved one or
- 3:17Speaker 3: remembering a loved one. There are biggest fundraisers and bring
- 3:22Speaker 3: the love in the community. We're super excited every year
- 3:25Speaker 3: to have a pancratic cancer survivor at the start line
- 3:30Speaker 3: giving a few words of encouragement before everybody heads off
- 3:34Speaker 3: on that five k walk or run, and then when
- 3:37Speaker 3: they come through the finish line, we have our giant
- 3:41Speaker 3: donut wall where everybody gets their metal and grabs their
- 3:44Speaker 3: grabs their donutt yeah exactly, which are donated by Kristy Kreme,
- 3:51Speaker 3: which is so lovely, and they go right into our
- 3:55Speaker 3: health and fitness expo. We call it the Fit Family
- 3:57Speaker 3: Expo and we've got the Candyland Kids Zone, so we
- 4:01Speaker 3: really try and make it. Obviously it's a heavy topic,
- 4:04Speaker 3: but at LA Cancer Challenge it's not heavy, it's inspiring.
- 4:09Speaker 3: It's about coming together and really honoring the progress that
- 4:13Speaker 3: we've been able to make because of people who are
- 4:15Speaker 3: fundraising and coming back year after year to support the
- 4:19Speaker 3: work that we're doing. The proceeds from the LA Cancer
- 4:23Speaker 3: Challenge go to fund our Seed Grant program, which is
- 4:27Speaker 3: startup funding for young scientists who want to build a
- 4:32Speaker 3: career in pan cradic cancer research. And this last in
- 4:36Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, we had a record breaking number of
- 4:39Speaker 3: applications over one hundred and thirty and we made the
- 4:43Speaker 3: which was crazy last year, and we made the qualifications
- 4:47Speaker 3: a little more difficult this year, or more specific, not difficult,
- 4:52Speaker 3: more specific, and we.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Had one hundred and.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Seventy eight applications, which just goes to show you how
- 4:58Speaker 3: much of a need there is out there, given all
- 5:01Speaker 3: of the threats of government funding, threats to from the
- 5:05Speaker 3: NIH to cancer research, not only at UCLA, but you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: across the country. It just shows that there are these
- 5:11Speaker 3: researchers who want to have a career in pancretic cancer research,
- 5:15Speaker 3: who want to be the ones who are you know, diagnosing,
- 5:19Speaker 3: helping with early detection, helping with treatments, and ultimately working
- 5:25Speaker 3: for a care So it puts all the more pressure
- 5:27Speaker 3: on this year's LA Cancer Challenge to raise more money
- 5:31Speaker 3: because yeah, yeah, the more we raise, the more SEA
- 5:33Speaker 3: grants we're going to fund. And yeah, it's it's a
- 5:37Speaker 3: good predicament to be in, I guess.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I mean kind of exciting that people are making this
- 5:42Speaker 1: such an important part of their career focus to make
- 5:45Speaker 1: a difference in the world of paying creatic cancer. And
- 5:47Speaker 1: then they're going to the Hirschburg Foundation to team up
- 5:50Speaker 1: with you and be a part of it. Yeah, to
- 5:51Speaker 1: get that seed money, but they want to put their
- 5:53Speaker 1: name as part of something is like finding a cure
- 5:56Speaker 1: or advancements in helping people sooner or.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Earlier detection or last time we talked. And I want
- 6:02Speaker 2: you to touch on me.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, all the accomplishments you've made since beginning this foundation.
- 6:06Speaker 2: How many years ago now?
- 6:08Speaker 3: We also also twenty eight years right after my stepdad
- 6:13Speaker 3: passed away in nineteen ninety seven, and there was no
- 6:17Speaker 3: pank Credit Cancer Foundation there. My mom just wanted to
- 6:21Speaker 3: make a donation to UCLA, which is where he was treated,
- 6:24Speaker 3: and to the pan caread of Cancer program. When she
- 6:28Speaker 3: found out there wasn't one, she said, there is now
- 6:30Speaker 3: and really are The rest is history.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Very quickly we were.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Formed and here we are twenty eight years later, having
- 6:38Speaker 3: raised millions and millions. Just the LA Cancer Challenge alone
- 6:41Speaker 3: has raised over ten million dollars in its twenty eight years. Amazing.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels good.
- 6:47Speaker 3: It feels good. We always are going back and forth
- 6:51Speaker 3: on celebrating while realizing there's still a giant mountain out
- 6:55Speaker 3: of us. Sure, and that's sort of part of the
- 6:58Speaker 3: nature of this disease and the difficulty of this disease,
- 7:02Speaker 3: But we really try to focus on whatever's going to
- 7:06Speaker 3: take to keep us going. Our motto we established in
- 7:09Speaker 3: our twenty fifth year was never give up until there's
- 7:11Speaker 3: a cure. We're going to keep fighting to the finish,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and there are so many hopeful developments on the horizon
- 7:17Speaker 3: for pancredic cancer that we just want to keep pushing
- 7:22Speaker 3: to make those hopeful developments become even mainstream reality.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Sure everyone, yeah, I mean, gosh, if your mom and
- 7:32Speaker 1: your stepdad Ron could see you now, I mean, it's
- 7:34Speaker 1: one thing to start a foundation and honor of someone
- 7:38Speaker 1: that you lost, but an honor of wanting to make change.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But gosh, you've been doing it for twenty eight years
- 7:42Speaker 1: and creating real change and making so much headway. These
- 7:46Speaker 1: numbers that I have in front of me are still
- 7:48Speaker 1: pretty crazy though. In twenty twenty five and estimated sixty
- 7:51Speaker 1: seven plus thousand Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer
- 7:55Speaker 1: and more than fifty one plus thousand will not make it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But on a positive note, I know you've made incredible
- 8:01Speaker 1: strides and advancements through your Hirschberg Foundation for Pancredic cancer research.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You know, compared to when your stepdad died of it
- 8:07Speaker 1: years ago, there wasn't much help, not like there is
- 8:10Speaker 1: now thanks to your organization that was started in his honor.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So talk about the strides that have been made in
- 8:16Speaker 1: the past twenty eight years.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Well, if you.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Go back to the late nineties, there were only I
- 8:22Speaker 3: think under thirty thousand people diagnosed, so they weren't even
- 8:27Speaker 3: diagnosing it fully at all back then, and obviously the
- 8:30Speaker 3: number has doubled to over sixty thousand. The key here
- 8:34Speaker 3: is the survival rate. Right now, it's only at thirteen
- 8:39Speaker 3: percent survival rate, which was in the single digits when
- 8:44Speaker 3: we started.
- 8:44Speaker 4: But the key is.
- 8:46Speaker 3: That if it's caught early, the five year survival rate
- 8:49Speaker 3: jumps to forty four percent. So then the major idea
- 8:53Speaker 3: there is that you've got to get you got to
- 8:55Speaker 3: get it early because early detection is going to save
- 8:58Speaker 3: live which is why there are we're constantly investing in
- 9:02Speaker 3: things that are going to help.
- 9:03Speaker 2: With early detection.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Develop it early. Yeah, yeah, blood tests, AI studies, all
- 9:10Speaker 3: those things that could lead to early detection which will
- 9:15Speaker 3: help the survival rate.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And for those that get diagnosed with pancredic cancer, is
- 9:19Speaker 1: more so after the age of sixty five, and is
- 9:21Speaker 1: it more so with men, well.
- 9:22Speaker 3: No, men and women certainly. Yes, it's definitely older, but
- 9:28Speaker 3: we've had experiences with patients in their thirties. The main
- 9:32Speaker 3: thing more than.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Age is family history.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Yes, is a combination of family history and weight obesity.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Were you a smunker, were you drinking alcohol? I mean,
- 9:43Speaker 3: all of those things play factors in pancratic cancer development.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Anybody who's had at least one at least one relative
- 9:54Speaker 3: who's died of pancredic cancer will recommend they speak with
- 9:58Speaker 3: a genetic counselor and get genetic testing. That's been That's
- 10:02Speaker 3: something that didn't exist when we started, and.
- 10:05Speaker 4: We talk a lot about at risk.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Patients and genetic counselors. There's also there's vaccines that are
- 10:14Speaker 3: in the works that we're never existing before. Right right now,
- 10:18Speaker 3: these vaccines are really for previous patients to keep it
- 10:23Speaker 3: from coming back.
- 10:24Speaker 4: But two vaccines that.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Are really promising their trials that are going on both
- 10:30Speaker 3: in immunotherapy and targeted therapies that are promising.
- 10:35Speaker 4: So there are.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Absolutely a lot of great things to talk about to
- 10:41Speaker 3: keep people hopeful and understanding how much their impact is
- 10:47Speaker 3: making on but it's a long road. It's a long road,
- 10:50Speaker 3: and we have to keep plugging away, which is why
- 10:53Speaker 3: we're here twenty eight years later.
- 10:55Speaker 1: But to know that there is help available and more
- 10:57Speaker 1: breakthroughs coming down the pike. Symptoms are for pank credit
- 11:01Speaker 1: cancer may include weight loss, abdominal discomfort, back pain, development
- 11:06Speaker 1: of type two diabetes. Some tumors may cause jaundice lead
- 11:10Speaker 1: into earlier diagnosis. And that's the tricky part, right that
- 11:14Speaker 1: these symptoms just sound so common, like they could be
- 11:16Speaker 1: caused by anything.
- 11:17Speaker 3: One of the reasons why pancradic cancer is so hard
- 11:19Speaker 3: to diagnose is because those symptoms are also associated with
- 11:23Speaker 3: much less serious conditions, back pain and loss about site yep,
- 11:28Speaker 3: So you don't it's again like there right now, isn't
- 11:33Speaker 3: the simple the simple tests that everyone.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Could take that would tell you if you have it?
- 11:37Speaker 3: So that's why working on things like blood tests and
- 11:41Speaker 3: again you know, using AI, using AI to look at
- 11:46Speaker 3: health history reports and scans to help see what the
- 11:49Speaker 3: human eye can't see. All these exciting things are going
- 11:52Speaker 3: to hopefully lead to real transformation in the next few years.
- 11:57Speaker 1: And your foundation, the Hersberg Foundation of our PAN Credic
- 11:59Speaker 1: Cancer Research. It's a nonprofit organization dedicated to the groundbreaking
- 12:03Speaker 1: research but across three collaborative laboratories right there at UCLA.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yep, we do and three laboratories, and the Aggie Hirschberg
- 12:12Speaker 3: Center for Pancratic Diseases, which is a we say it's
- 12:15Speaker 3: the one stop shop for a pancredic cancer patient that
- 12:19Speaker 3: we fund. That you go on Tuesdays and you can
- 12:23Speaker 3: meet with multiple doctors in one location at one time.
- 12:27Speaker 3: The doctors will all then take.
- 12:29Speaker 4: A team approach.
- 12:30Speaker 3: They are all there together to meet to collaborate so
- 12:33Speaker 3: that your oncologist is talking to the nutritionists is talking
- 12:36Speaker 3: to the surgeon. And that was really one of our
- 12:40Speaker 3: main goals when we started the foundation was to improve
- 12:44Speaker 3: the patient experience. It's super important that if you are
- 12:47Speaker 3: diagnosed with pancredic cancer that you're seen at a high
- 12:50Speaker 3: volume hospital, and fortunately ucule's right here, but we also
- 12:55Speaker 3: have relationships with other outstanding hospitals throughout the country. When
- 13:00Speaker 3: we have when we get contacted by families who have
- 13:05Speaker 3: had a loved one diagnosed from across the country and
- 13:08Speaker 3: they ask how we can help, and we start with
- 13:12Speaker 3: recommending five volume centers that are in their area or
- 13:16Speaker 3: where where they should travel to get the treatment that
- 13:19Speaker 3: they would need. We are constantly working at creating content
- 13:24Speaker 3: via videos webinars that are order done. Yeah, it's used
- 13:30Speaker 3: to be like we were talking very big picture. Now
- 13:34Speaker 3: we're trying to have videos about everything. You have a
- 13:37Speaker 3: you want to know about pancratic enzymes, We've got it.
- 13:39Speaker 3: You want to know what questions to ask when you
- 13:41Speaker 3: first go to see your doctor. We want to share
- 13:44Speaker 3: that information, have anything that you could possibly need as
- 13:47Speaker 3: when you're going through that from start to finish on
- 13:50Speaker 3: our website. So we feel we're really proud of it.
- 13:52Speaker 3: It's a constant work in progress obviously as new as
- 13:57Speaker 3: new things come about, but it's always about like what
- 14:00Speaker 3: which is a pancretic cancer patient who's living with it
- 14:03Speaker 3: right now need? And we have an amazing woman who's
- 14:07Speaker 3: our director of Patient Programs, Amy, who is there to help,
- 14:12Speaker 3: you know, direct, provide resources, do whatever she can. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 3: and it'll be so nice that the Ella cancer challenge,
- 14:19Speaker 3: so many patients and families will come back.
- 14:23Speaker 4: We'll all be together.
- 14:24Speaker 3: We know that there's a support group that meets that
- 14:27Speaker 3: we work with that they're all the people who are
- 14:31Speaker 3: on this online Zoom support group are all going to
- 14:34Speaker 3: meet at Ella Cancer Challenge for the first time, which
- 14:38Speaker 3: is yes, I want to get goosebumps when I think
- 14:41Speaker 3: about that, And just to know that our event is
- 14:44Speaker 3: going to be that space where they can come together
- 14:47Speaker 3: and you know, connect and walk and be be inspired
- 14:53Speaker 3: by the people who are there fighting for them and
- 14:56Speaker 3: the doctors who are there doing what they can to,
- 15:00Speaker 3: you know, to help make a difference, help bring about yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 3: help this put this disease out.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So where at UCLA are we meeting October twenty sixth.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Costumes highly encouraged, but not mandatory. Even just the color
- 15:13Speaker 1: purple would be great. And again after the five K,
- 15:16Speaker 1: just a total outdoor extravaganza for the entire family. Kids
- 15:19Speaker 1: and adults kind of dive into this candy cane Lane
- 15:22Speaker 1: kid zone, complete with life size candidake for her, festive
- 15:26Speaker 1: arts and crafts, and a big moon bounce. They'll be
- 15:29Speaker 1: health and fitness booths, music entertainment, halloween festivities, an adult
- 15:34Speaker 1: costume contest, and a kid's costume parade. Super cute ages
- 15:37Speaker 1: at two to eleven and after the five k you
- 15:39Speaker 1: run straight to the doughnut Wall thanks to Krispy Kream, Yes,
- 15:43Speaker 1: Krispy Kreme. Where do we meet at seven thirty in
- 15:46Speaker 1: the morning, Lisa on October twenty six for this we meet.
- 15:49Speaker 3: We meet at Wilson Plaza, which is right at the
- 15:52Speaker 3: bottom of Jam Steps outside of the Annenburg Soccer Stadium.
- 15:56Speaker 4: You register at LA.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Cancer Challenge dot com and we'll give you all of
- 16:01Speaker 3: that information. There's parking right underneath. The five K starts
- 16:05Speaker 3: at nine, but the expo opens at seven point thirty
- 16:09Speaker 3: and we'll have some pre activities and then afterwards we'll
- 16:14Speaker 3: have Candyland, kid Zone, as I said, the finish line,
- 16:18Speaker 3: donut Wall, and so many activities.
- 16:22Speaker 4: We've got an.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Awareness alley with all sorts of ways to learn more
- 16:26Speaker 3: about pank Credit Cancer, create awareness. Incredible sponsors giving out
- 16:31Speaker 3: their sweets and treats and samples and all that.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Costumes highly encouraged and just a lot of the color purple,
- 16:39Speaker 1: kind of the color purple for pan Credit Cancer, right,
- 16:42Speaker 1: A lot of purple.
- 16:43Speaker 4: That's right, yeah, lots of purple.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Our T shirt this year that's included with registration is
- 16:49Speaker 3: the super softest Oh my god, I love it, the
- 16:52Speaker 3: softest long sleeve purple T shirt does never never give
- 16:56Speaker 3: up on the front, so soft and cozy, So that's
- 16:59Speaker 3: a good treat. We get those donated. So really lucky
- 17:02Speaker 3: to be able to. We think there's a lot of
- 17:05Speaker 3: value in the registration fee and the experience that comes
- 17:09Speaker 3: from this event, and certainly being on the UCLA campus
- 17:14Speaker 3: on a Sunday morning, it's so pretty. The walk is
- 17:17Speaker 3: three point one miles, but you can walk as little
- 17:21Speaker 3: or as little or or much as you want.
- 17:24Speaker 4: And we just want, we just want you.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Get to be there.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't have to cross the finish line to
- 17:30Speaker 4: get your donut. That's the secret.
- 17:33Speaker 2: You're not going to make it too difficult.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You just want people there intros and you know, a
- 17:37Speaker 1: couple bucks to a registering, get sign up. You'll get
- 17:39Speaker 1: that beautiful soft, long sleeve purple T shirt that Lisa mentioned.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And boy, hats off to the people who've already been
- 17:45Speaker 1: fundraising and you already have teams are already signed up.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Wow.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I see the list right there on your website La
- 17:51Speaker 1: Cancer Challenge dot com. The list of people, the top
- 17:55Speaker 1: ten teams and walkers and groups that have raised so
- 17:59Speaker 1: much money, of people so dedicated to this cause, and
- 18:02Speaker 1: making a difference is very very impressive. Doug Atkins and
- 18:06Speaker 1: Howard Gouseman and Leslie Nelson, I'm like, how are they
- 18:09Speaker 1: raising one hundred thousand dollars?
- 18:11Speaker 2: My gosh, I love these people.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I will tell you that they've been at it
- 18:16Speaker 3: and they're they're good at professionals what they their Their
- 18:20Speaker 3: number one thing is is they are not afraid to ask.
- 18:23Speaker 3: That is that is the key. And even people who
- 18:27Speaker 3: simply ask via Facebook by putting a Facebook fundraiser together,
- 18:31Speaker 3: will are always surprised.
