- 0:10Speaker 2: And I am your host, Doctor J. Listen.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Many of you have been eavesdropping, but I want to
- 0:16Speaker 1: tell you, man, go ahead and hit subscribe. Man, go
- 0:18Speaker 1: ahead and hit the subscribe, but stop peeping over here
- 0:21Speaker 1: to see what we got going on in this healing community.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Listen.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Some of y'all needs from healing, and I think it's
- 0:30Speaker 1: about time you do what's right.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And what is right is to subscribe. But listen.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Other than that, I am excited about this episode today
- 0:38Speaker 1: because many of you know my journey. I started out
- 0:42Speaker 1: as a performance trainer, had my own company for many years,
- 0:45Speaker 1: trained a lot of pro athletes before God shifted me
- 0:48Speaker 1: into the mental health space. But today I get to
- 0:51Speaker 1: talk to He may not feel in his own rights,
- 0:55Speaker 1: but I feel like he's one of the ghats because
- 0:57Speaker 1: you can't talk to no athletes that mo Well has
- 1:01Speaker 1: not touched.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I want to introduce to you, uh, my brother, your
- 1:05Speaker 2: brother to the Heill and Circle. Mowell, My brother, how
- 1:08Speaker 2: you doing?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Man?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Man here? You got the glasses on, listen, got the
- 1:13Speaker 2: glasses on. Let y'all know he ain't playing. He come
- 1:16Speaker 2: to cook a little bit.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Spike impression here.
- 1:19Speaker 4: I love it, man, you know what, I get it
- 1:21Speaker 4: every week, bro, every week.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Hey, come on, come on, do right listen.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm excited about this episode because before we had you on,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we had Jason Barrett uh nfl VET man, and you know,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he was talking about his journey and we'll get into
- 1:45Speaker 1: uh some of the athletes that you had the opportunity
- 1:49Speaker 1: to enhance and build.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Uh them for their careers.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But we're also talked about an athlete that was very
- 1:56Speaker 1: dear to you, that had an unfortunate in that I
- 2:01Speaker 1: was sort of brought in from a few family members
- 2:05Speaker 1: when the incident occurred. But man, I'm so excited to
- 2:09Speaker 1: talk to you more because when my cousin introduced me
- 2:13Speaker 1: to you and he was telling me about what you do.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I've been out of game for performance training for a
- 2:19Speaker 1: number of years. I started when I was like twenty
- 2:21Speaker 1: seven and stopped when I was about thirty five, so
- 2:24Speaker 1: about ten years now. And one of the things that
- 2:27Speaker 1: I miss, man, is just the camaraderie of being around
- 2:32Speaker 1: those guys every day, whether it was combined prep or
- 2:38Speaker 1: whether it was summer trading guys, was getting ready to
- 2:40Speaker 1: return to camp, whether it was basketball, football. I trained
- 2:47Speaker 1: a lot of hockey players, and so I worked with
- 2:50Speaker 1: a lot of goaldies and a lot of wing players,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and I trained a lot of shortstops and.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Left middlefield and.
- 2:59Speaker 1: In that world, Man, what was so special about it
- 3:03Speaker 1: is seeing an athlete grow right and the skills. And
- 3:08Speaker 1: I want to get into your sort of defining moments
- 3:13Speaker 1: to get into that.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But what has been one of the biggest.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Sort of things that you've discovered about yourself as you
- 3:22Speaker 1: have begun this journey improving and enhancing the performance of
- 3:27Speaker 1: so many athletes.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I believe that though one of the big things that
- 3:30Speaker 4: I've proven to myself or my journey has showed to me, man,
- 3:35Speaker 4: is that really.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Anything is possible.
- 3:37Speaker 4: You know, it's kind of a cliche saying sometime, but man,
- 3:40Speaker 4: I feel like I can't be stop.
- 3:43Speaker 3: My girl always mess with me. She always talk.
- 3:44Speaker 4: About, man, you think you invisible, man, And I don't
- 3:47Speaker 4: think that I'm necessarily invincible, but I do feel like
- 3:51Speaker 4: I can't be stopped when.
- 3:52Speaker 3: It comes to whatever I set my mind to whatever.
- 3:54Speaker 4: And that's just because of the feats that I've been
- 3:56Speaker 4: able to accomplish, the things that I've been able to overcome.
- 4:00Speaker 4: It puts me in a mind state of Okay, whenever
- 4:02Speaker 4: I got in front of me, I'm.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Going to do it to one hundred and ten percent.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It's going to be successful and.
- 4:08Speaker 4: There's never a down in my mind that it won't leave.
- 4:10Speaker 4: And that's how And that's been a really a strong
- 4:13Speaker 4: defining moment for me for anything from playing sports growing
- 4:16Speaker 4: up to going to McNee State, to transferring the Louisiana
- 4:19Speaker 4: State University, to getting into the sports medicine performance field
- 4:23Speaker 4: to overcome a mind what I call my off the
- 4:25Speaker 4: field stuff, you know. So that's that's been a you know,
- 4:30Speaker 4: deck will shoot two decades of divining career moments for
- 4:33Speaker 4: me just being in this space.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because you start off running track, right, Yeah, So
- 4:39Speaker 1: you start off running track.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You're running in McNee state.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yeah, random McNee stay running formed hurdles, so random McNee State,
- 4:45Speaker 4: and then transferred to LSU, also running formed hurdles. Then
- 4:49Speaker 4: I went right into working for LSU and strength conditioning
- 4:52Speaker 4: with football.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So you go into working in the strength and conditioning
- 4:57Speaker 1: and you study sports medicine and you work with all
- 5:01Speaker 1: these athletes that you know, LSU has put out in
- 5:06Speaker 1: so many different categories and so many different sports right
- 5:10Speaker 1: in this space. Now, where were you always pursuing training
- 5:16Speaker 1: and working with athletes or was it something that you
- 5:18Speaker 1: sort of feel?
- 5:19Speaker 3: No, man, it really found me.
- 5:21Speaker 4: So I at first I want to be ultiply surgeon,
- 5:24Speaker 4: right and selfishly enough, it was gonna take me too
- 5:27Speaker 4: long to get reached. So I didn't want to be
- 5:31Speaker 4: just getting into surgery and wherever I was gonna be
- 5:35Speaker 4: have private practice over the case. And b when I
- 5:36Speaker 4: was forty something, you know, I wanted to like get
- 5:38Speaker 4: right into my field. And then I had pre physical therapy,
- 5:42Speaker 4: so I was canice major health scientists and biology, and
- 5:47Speaker 4: I didn't want to work respectfully with like a lot
- 5:50Speaker 4: of geriatric I wanted to work just athletes physical therapy.
- 5:54Speaker 4: You have a lot of geriatrics, man, so with that
- 5:56Speaker 4: older population, the automobile accidents, all that stuff which can't
- 6:00Speaker 4: be lucrative, but that's not I wanted to be just
- 6:02Speaker 4: in sports. So I had a really good strength condition
- 6:05Speaker 4: coach Jay Griudell at LSU when I was running track,
- 6:08Speaker 4: and he was also the intern football internship coordinator as well, So.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Out day after day.
- 6:15Speaker 4: I've always been a student of my craft, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 4: no matter what the craft is, I've always studied the game.
- 6:20Speaker 4: That's from high school on up. Track wasn't my first
- 6:23Speaker 4: four It was baseball, baseball and football. Started running track
- 6:26Speaker 4: when I was in the ninth grade and shoot from there,
- 6:29Speaker 4: just studying then asking him every day He's like, hey, man,
- 6:31Speaker 4: like talk to me a little bit more about strength conditioning.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I started working while I was in school, So I
- 6:37Speaker 4: was working in turning on some huge names bout shaks later, Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 4: Tommy Moffett, that I was under like Gail Hatch, that
- 6:44Speaker 4: I was under a legend in the Olympic lifting space.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And you know, he and Jay really steered me into
- 6:51Speaker 3: that route.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Man, and I saw a gap in the sports performance
- 6:54Speaker 4: in which has helped me up to this day, was
- 6:58Speaker 4: that there was a lack of true speed development of football,
- 7:01Speaker 4: and there was a lack of adequate strength conditioning and
- 7:03Speaker 4: track of field. So my initial goal was just to
- 7:05Speaker 4: bridge that gap, and from there it just blossomed into
- 7:09Speaker 4: everything else.
- 7:10Speaker 3: You know, all the way.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So it blossom too, uh, it's something into something else
- 7:16Speaker 1: that and I and I often say that most of
- 7:20Speaker 1: what we discover about our purpose, it's usually a mistake
- 7:25Speaker 1: in some way.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Essentially.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, oh, I wasn't trying to do this.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not what I was trying to do that.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And I thought I was gonna be doing surgeries on
- 7:33Speaker 4: knees and stuff and that's not what Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And it's like, it's a great it's a good mistake
- 7:38Speaker 1: that that that we made. And I like to say
- 7:41Speaker 1: that you you stumble into your next You stumbling into
- 7:45Speaker 1: your next and you're working with these athletes and and
- 7:50Speaker 1: I know we talked briefly, but you you you were
- 7:55Speaker 1: also navigating off the field things and to be an athlete.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And I often say this for so many athletes, right,
- 8:03Speaker 1: is so many times people see I played, they see
- 8:08Speaker 1: our performance, but they never see us, Right, What was
- 8:12Speaker 1: that like for you trying to manage off the field
- 8:17Speaker 1: and how did you navigate through that?
- 8:20Speaker 4: I think, man, and you probably have experienced this as
- 8:23Speaker 4: well as that when you're showing up for everybody, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 4: when you're always president, and you gotta think I joke
- 8:29Speaker 4: all the time, man, But as a trainer, especially in
- 8:30Speaker 4: the pro space, it's when I'm training more so like
- 8:33Speaker 4: a barber shop.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:34Speaker 4: I'm a psychologist for everybody, you know, and that was
- 8:36Speaker 4: my minor in school, but it shoot, nothing in school
- 8:40Speaker 4: prepared you for what you experience and what I'm dealing
- 8:42Speaker 4: with these guys, uh, male and female athletes. And the
- 8:47Speaker 4: biggest thing in that regard is that man, ain't nobody
- 8:50Speaker 4: really checking too much for you know, the person that's
- 8:53Speaker 4: always given out. So having to navigate how to be
- 8:56Speaker 4: strong but still be open about certain things with my
- 8:59Speaker 4: little and the people that are around me and and
- 9:02Speaker 4: not in a sense make sure I say it right
- 9:05Speaker 4: to not come off this week and still be strong,
- 9:08Speaker 4: you know, not always whine and complain about different stuff
- 9:11Speaker 4: because I am very blessed un fortunate in the situation
- 9:14Speaker 4: that I've been in and what I've overcome. But it
- 9:17Speaker 4: gets tough trying to navigate that because it's man. It's
- 9:20Speaker 4: like you reach out for a hand to get some help.
- 9:23Speaker 4: But then at the same time it's like, well, as
- 9:25Speaker 4: a man, I don't want to, you know, saying be
- 9:27Speaker 4: too vulnerable. But then that's something I've worked on the
- 9:29Speaker 4: past few years, is that leaning into that vulnerability and
- 9:32Speaker 4: being more conversational with when I talk to my guys
- 9:35Speaker 4: or talked about significant other and in certain situations and
- 9:39Speaker 4: saying that you know.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Well you got that going on.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Well I'm gonna talk about stuff I got going on
- 9:44Speaker 4: to you know, and just making it a two way street. First,
- 9:47Speaker 4: just give give, give gift because at some point, man,
- 9:50Speaker 4: that bucket get empty.
- 9:51Speaker 3: And it gets tough.
- 9:52Speaker 4: You hit that wall, and I, unfortunately I've hit the
- 9:55Speaker 4: wall several times.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Man.
- 9:56Speaker 4: It's just like you know, and and if you don't
- 9:58Speaker 4: know how to process and navigate it, it's confusing to me.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Then what should I do? What am I doing wrong?
- 10:03Speaker 3: Why am I feeling like this? You know, what does
- 10:06Speaker 3: depression look like? What does depression feel like?
- 10:08Speaker 1: You know?
- 10:08Speaker 3: Am I functioning with it?
- 10:10Speaker 4: You know, different type of stuff like that, And it
- 10:12Speaker 4: could be tough, So me navigated. And I think it's
- 10:14Speaker 4: all environmental too, to come out on the other side
- 10:18Speaker 4: of any of that, being in these environments, being in
- 10:20Speaker 4: a performance space, being around positive people.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Like I can't do anything nigga, I can't.
- 10:24Speaker 4: I can't be around a bunch of niggive stuff because
- 10:26Speaker 4: you know, I feel like it just.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Pulls you down.
- 10:28Speaker 4: So being around like I like, for instance, I won't
- 10:30Speaker 4: train certain athletes if they're messing up the environment.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You know, pro I don't give damn who you are.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Like, I won't do it.
- 10:39Speaker 1: So what I'm what I'm hearing from you is to
- 10:42Speaker 1: protect your mental you have to sort of vet the
- 10:48Speaker 1: athletes mental on if you're going to bring them into your.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Spe Absolutely, and I don't shy away from any type
- 10:54Speaker 4: of task. You know, I was just going through this
- 10:56Speaker 4: a few weeks with pre draft, and I don't shy
- 10:58Speaker 4: away from anybody.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Unless like super disruptive.
- 11:01Speaker 4: You know, I don't care what an athlete is going
- 11:03Speaker 4: through person, because we all go through stuff.
- 11:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:05Speaker 3: That's I take that head on now. But as long
- 11:07Speaker 3: as they're.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Not disruptive, disrespectful, all that stuff, then we're in a
- 11:11Speaker 4: good space. I think, Shoot and my career, I think
- 11:14Speaker 4: God when he gave me this gift, he was like, man,
- 11:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna let you have the best athletes in the world,
- 11:19Speaker 4: but I'm also gonna give you all.
- 11:20Speaker 3: The athletes that got some issues.
- 11:22Speaker 4: So and if you look at my roster, man I
- 11:24Speaker 4: got some I've had to, you know, run through the
- 11:27Speaker 4: fire with.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Some of these guys.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You know, when it comes to the stuff that they've
- 11:30Speaker 4: had to deal with on the field, on the court,
- 11:31Speaker 4: off off the court, off the field, and you know,
- 11:34Speaker 4: I wouldn't have it any other way because it solidifies
- 11:36Speaker 4: our bond. You know, I have a higher attention rate
- 11:39Speaker 4: when it comes to working with these guys, and you know,
- 11:42Speaker 4: they always always come back because they feel comfortable and
- 11:45Speaker 4: they're getting the experience well.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And I think in some way, right, when you look
- 11:49Speaker 1: at a lot of these athletes, right, it's a bit congenital,
- 11:53Speaker 1: meaning that a lot of these things had sort of
- 11:56Speaker 1: has been with them since burden. Yeah, a lot of
- 11:59Speaker 1: these things are in some way it's ingrained. And as
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm talking to parents, when I'm counseling an athlete or
- 12:10Speaker 1: a parent says, my son is battling depression he's going
- 12:17Speaker 1: through or not playing, particularly for guys that are trying
- 12:21Speaker 1: to recover from an injury, or a guy who is
- 12:25Speaker 1: leaving high school trying to enter into the college ranks,
- 12:28Speaker 1: or a guy who's iner into the pro ranks and
- 12:31Speaker 1: trying to find his way.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Because coaches don't develop people.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And I'm saying this right as as a majority, absolutely.
- 12:42Speaker 2: They do not.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They develop talent, and unfortunately is by developed talent. You
- 12:52Speaker 1: have a lot of guys who are under developed in
- 12:56Speaker 1: their character, in their emotions, and in the way that
- 13:01Speaker 1: they socialized. Because the way that we have been socialized
- 13:07Speaker 1: is that you never tell when you're injured.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Shut it up.
- 13:14Speaker 1: If I'm hurt, that means I can keep going. If
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm injured, man, that means I may got to take
- 13:21Speaker 1: a playoff, or I may have to miss a game,
- 13:24Speaker 1: or I may have to not suit up. And what
- 13:27Speaker 1: I'm hearing from you is that we have a lot
- 13:30Speaker 1: of guys that are playing, but they're really.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Injured one hundred percent.
- 13:35Speaker 4: And that to that testament, Man, I went through with
- 13:38Speaker 4: myself when I was running the LSU and mentally and physically,
- 13:42Speaker 4: you know, I went through my brain turning situation, and
- 13:45Speaker 4: I was running through all of that pain.
- 13:48Speaker 2: You know, I was running through them almost so down.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You was running with a brain tour.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I had that. I thought you knew I was.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I had a brain toom for fifteen years.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I didn't know it what yep, But I found out
- 14:01Speaker 4: about it my senior year at LSU.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I had a a ninja on.
- 14:05Speaker 4: My brain tumor almost took me, took me from down
- 14:08Speaker 4: here ended up having to get a cranky out of me.
- 14:12Speaker 4: My senior year, I was the week of national championships.
- 14:15Speaker 4: I had just started my internship with LSU football, and yeah, man,
- 14:19Speaker 4: it was huge.
- 14:20Speaker 3: It's like the size of a tennis ball.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You had a tumor the size of the tennis ball.
- 14:29Speaker 1: What what? What led to the discovery?
- 14:32Speaker 4: So I was having So where I was I was
- 14:35Speaker 4: more so like back end of the roster, right, You're thinking,
- 14:37Speaker 4: like I practiced squad. I was a decent hurler. I
- 14:40Speaker 4: was better than the South of the conference than in
- 14:41Speaker 4: the SEC. So I knew that we talk about, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 4: mentally and physically being hurt and injured. If I showed
- 14:48Speaker 4: too much weakness mentally or physically, I can get my
- 14:51Speaker 4: ass cut, you know. And I was like, I got
- 14:55Speaker 4: to power through it. So I was always if there
- 14:56Speaker 4: are seven days in a week and we trained six days,
- 14:59Speaker 4: for of those days, I had a migraine and my
- 15:01Speaker 4: body was hurting or when it was traveling and stuff
- 15:04Speaker 4: I was throwing up. It was all but it was
- 15:06Speaker 4: all like stomach virus symptoms. It happened either weekly or
- 15:10Speaker 4: like bi weekly all the time. And that started happening
- 15:14Speaker 4: my sophomore year of college and it got progressively worse.
- 15:18Speaker 4: So my last year l s U. It was one
- 15:21Speaker 4: day I started my internship. It was like four in
- 15:23Speaker 4: the morning.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I woke up.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Man, my gram was so bad, my teeth hurting, throwing
- 15:27Speaker 4: up through up till one nothing left, and uh, I
- 15:31Speaker 4: called everybody, called so many people with nobody answer the phones.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Four in the one and I drove myself to the
- 15:36Speaker 4: er and went to the hospital. Ended up giving me
- 15:40Speaker 4: like basic treatment like you would get in and when
- 15:43Speaker 4: you go, tell I feel like I got the stomach virus.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Blah blah.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Gave me fluids thankfully because I was actually about to
- 15:49Speaker 4: have a stroke. But thankfully one of the doctors that
- 15:53Speaker 4: was there knew me for running track at l s U.
- 15:55Speaker 3: So he walked in, came in, saw me, and he
- 15:58Speaker 3: said me, let's do it. Let's do a cast. Let's
- 16:00Speaker 3: just see what's going on, you know, with your head.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Biggest day. It admitted me immediately, you're the MRI. But
- 16:07Speaker 3: it was.
- 16:08Speaker 4: It was a blessing. And it was such a blessing
- 16:10Speaker 4: and even as soon as yesterday because I have an athlete,
- 16:13Speaker 4: that's what my group now, and I was he was
- 16:16Speaker 4: asking me some questions and his sister had passed away
- 16:18Speaker 4: from the same thing. Wow, and uh, so I was
- 16:22Speaker 4: in I was in hospital about ten days. I got
- 16:26Speaker 4: my surgery on day seven. Didn't lose any motor function,
- 16:29Speaker 4: didn't lose any memory. Uh, didn't lose any speech and everything.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I went back to work ten days after that.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I'm a pause, brothers, because God is real.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 16:43Speaker 1: There's many people that I know that have had brain tumors, uh,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and it wasn't discovering until they was gone. You have
- 16:53Speaker 1: a brain tumor surgery within ten days and you're back
- 16:58Speaker 1: to work ten days.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Yep.
- 17:00Speaker 4: So it goes back to kind and you know, they say,
- 17:03Speaker 4: you know, you got to have a certain sense of
- 17:08Speaker 4: intendity to do certain stuff and feel certain ways when
- 17:10Speaker 4: it comes to work ethic. And yeah, you just said delusion.
- 17:13Speaker 4: That'd be a little bit of delusion about certain stuff.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I didn't think I was gonna know it was gonna
- 17:17Speaker 4: fake me whatsoever.
- 17:19Speaker 3: I didn't think I.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Wasn't gonna come out on the other side of it
- 17:22Speaker 4: like I went into a head on, just like I
- 17:23Speaker 4: do everything else. And you know, it's a pro and
- 17:26Speaker 4: a can for me mentally sometimes, but it worked out
- 17:29Speaker 4: in that sense because I was never negative about it.
- 17:32Speaker 3: I always had a positive thinking. I always do. God
- 17:35Speaker 3: had a plan for me.
- 17:36Speaker 4: And you know, thankfully I did come out on the
- 17:39Speaker 4: positive end of that because in LSU, I'm thankful that
- 17:43Speaker 4: was one of my best decisions I've made in my
- 17:45Speaker 4: career as far as that transfer, because should they found
- 17:48Speaker 4: it over you know, and that community wrapped their ours
- 17:50Speaker 4: around me after the.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Fact, you know, and shoot out. Like I said, I went,
- 17:54Speaker 3: I went back to work.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Man.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I wasn't trying to lose my GA spot over there.
- 17:58Speaker 3: So wrap that thing up right back to work.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So and your your your your your resilience is it's unmatched.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And I wonder how strong is your mental how is
- 18:12Speaker 1: your emotions?
- 18:14Speaker 3: You know?
- 18:15Speaker 4: With me growing up, it's not hard to explain. With
- 18:18Speaker 4: me growing up, I grew up a little bit differently, man.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I always had to be from a very very young age.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I had to be the strong one, you.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Know, And I think as you get older there's certain
- 18:28Speaker 4: cars that come with being the strong one in your
- 18:30Speaker 4: whole life.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:31Speaker 4: So, and just for instance, sympathy and empathy hard for me,
- 18:35Speaker 4: you know, hard for me because I'm like suck it up.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yo, Noah, I gotta ask you because you mentioned your lady,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I got to ask you, how was that in a
- 18:43Speaker 1: relationship to you?
- 18:45Speaker 2: Really tough?
- 18:46Speaker 4: Super tough, absolutely, And it's not it's not like either
- 18:51Speaker 4: one of us do anything wrong, even previously. It's not
- 18:54Speaker 4: like doing anything wrong. But I just have sometimes have
- 18:58Speaker 4: a hard time of just dropping my shoulders, relaxing, being open,
- 19:04Speaker 4: being vulnerable, you know, not understandable. I feel like everybody
- 19:10Speaker 4: should be this strong type of you know, type of
- 19:13Speaker 4: thing that I've had to fight with.
- 19:15Speaker 3: And it's got like I said, it's gotten better over
- 19:16Speaker 3: the week years.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Like I tell all my athetes, I said, Man, if
- 19:19Speaker 4: you have a habit for twenty one years, twenty two years,
- 19:23Speaker 4: and you think you're gonna go to the NFL and
- 19:25Speaker 4: that habit, you just gonna not have that habit anymore.
- 19:27Speaker 3: It doesn't work like that.
- 19:28Speaker 4: So I'm thirty three down. So you know, it took
- 19:32Speaker 4: some years. Like them early twenties, late twenties was just carousel.
- 19:36Speaker 3: And then me too. I'm nomadic when it comes to my.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Work, so I've lived in five different states when it
- 19:41Speaker 4: comes to work. So I during my twenties, I put
- 19:44Speaker 4: my head down. I was just going, just going, just
- 19:47Speaker 4: working work. I didn't make any room for any type
- 19:49Speaker 4: of emotional intelligence. You know, it wasn't important to me,
- 19:53Speaker 4: you know, so you put it on backboard, and then
- 19:55Speaker 4: you get with a person that emotional intelligence is super
- 19:58Speaker 4: important and it makes you if you want to be
- 20:00Speaker 4: in it and it just makes you develop, you know.
- 20:02Speaker 4: And the main thing with my communication now, because I
- 20:05Speaker 4: am a pretty efficient communicator, the main thing is now
- 20:07Speaker 4: is that, hey, I'm making a lot of changes, Like
- 20:11Speaker 4: I feel like I can't rush the.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Paste of what I'm doing.
- 20:14Speaker 4: I'm still having to understand and grow and develop as
- 20:16Speaker 4: I you know, go through it all.
- 20:18Speaker 1: But you know, the beauty of what you just shared, man,
- 20:21Speaker 1: and the way that you just articulated it, I think
- 20:26Speaker 1: a lot of men, particularly athletes, and even some men
- 20:31Speaker 1: that are not athletes, right, it takes a level of
- 20:34Speaker 1: awareness and a level of consciousness to even convey it
- 20:39Speaker 1: the way that you did, because that's one of the
- 20:43Speaker 1: things that we have as athletes that is often times,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, really the driver for us to be great
- 20:52Speaker 1: in what we do, because it is a bit actuomatic,
- 20:57Speaker 1: meaning that for the athlete to be great, his work
- 21:00Speaker 1: ethic has to be greater.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Absolutely, you know what I'm saying.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Absolutely, And so when when when I when I think
- 21:06Speaker 1: about what you're saying.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Because for me, I wouldn't say it was suffering.
- 21:15Speaker 1: But I functioned in that way because in sports you
- 21:20Speaker 1: can't express emotions right and and and especially when it
- 21:27Speaker 1: comes to words right now, you can express emotions through
- 21:31Speaker 1: your plate, but expressing emotions with your language is very difficult.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Say so when you get in a relationship and she's
- 21:40Speaker 1: asking you tell me.
- 21:41Speaker 4: How you feel more, Yeah, you got to expound, you know.
- 21:45Speaker 4: And I think what helped me now was being with
- 21:48Speaker 4: somebody that asked the second question after you know what
- 21:52Speaker 4: I'm saying, so can you tell me how you feel?
- 21:54Speaker 3: All right?
- 21:54Speaker 4: Then that follow question that goes back and just peeling
- 21:57Speaker 4: back layers of you know, dabbing into your your emotional IQ,
- 22:01Speaker 4: you know, and who you want to be as a
- 22:04Speaker 4: part of because like you said, as a I work.
- 22:06Speaker 4: To me, I work harder than my athletes and my arena,
- 22:09Speaker 4: you know, stay get up early, stay up late. Obviously
- 22:13Speaker 4: starting businesses, doing all this different stuff, and it's it
- 22:16Speaker 4: was hard for me and I'm still working going into
- 22:19Speaker 4: make like I said makes space not only emotionally, but
- 22:22Speaker 4: from time commitment. I never had to give many people
- 22:25Speaker 4: my time. I was always at work, you know, from
- 22:28Speaker 4: a you know, like I said that emotional intelligence to
- 22:31Speaker 4: sharing the space, to all these different things that go
- 22:34Speaker 4: into making network and then doing the hard stuff and
- 22:38Speaker 4: not just walking away from it, because I've always been
- 22:40Speaker 4: able to say, all right, man, I ain't doing this,
- 22:42Speaker 4: you know, but no, nobody won't go through life alone.
- 22:45Speaker 4: So so you have to work on yourself. And I
- 22:48Speaker 4: think with the athletes it's tough for them because they're
- 22:52Speaker 4: always being sought after.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Right, So you don't know, you don't know who you
- 22:56Speaker 3: can trust.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Right, You don't know who you can trust when you
- 22:59Speaker 4: have a hero complant, because we've likely saved everybody Mama,
- 23:03Speaker 4: daddy's sister, brother, uncle, friend's best friends. So you have
- 23:06Speaker 4: the hero complex already. So the world already on your back.
- 23:09Speaker 4: You got everybody propped up, you know. And then from
- 23:12Speaker 4: a significant other standpoint, it's like they coming every which
- 23:16Speaker 4: your way, right, so you have a trust factor. And
- 23:18Speaker 4: then too, especially if you treat the stuff like it's disposable,
- 23:21Speaker 4: then you're just in a carousel. Right, So you got
- 23:26Speaker 4: a backpack in the front and the backpack in the back,
- 23:28Speaker 4: like everything is heavy, you know, everything is heavy. So
- 23:31Speaker 4: and I don't think these guys take enough time to
- 23:34Speaker 4: navigate through that.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And a lot of times before it's too late. They'd
- 23:38Speaker 3: be forties fifties before you start trying to navigate, you know,
- 23:42Speaker 3: and by then you.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Like, no, why didn't want to deal with a super
- 23:47Speaker 4: growl man that can't function, you know, mentally, emotionally.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Somebody want to deal with that, you know. So I
- 23:54Speaker 3: think I'll create.
- 23:55Speaker 4: A safe space with these athletes to where we are
- 23:57Speaker 4: open and honest about everything.
- 23:59Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 23:59Speaker 4: We have the conversations, and if there's anything outside of
- 24:02Speaker 4: my scope of practice, like we collaborated, I already on
- 24:05Speaker 4: an athlete, I'm going right to the professional, you know,
- 24:08Speaker 4: and making sure that they're hurt. Man.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I tell you, it's so beautiful because.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I didn't really see life differently until I begin opening
- 24:20Speaker 1: my heart and not just to receive love, but opening
- 24:25Speaker 1: my heart to understand love.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Because when when when you're an athlete.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And when you are just a man who's trying to navigate, Ah,
- 24:34Speaker 1: you don't think you need love?
- 24:36Speaker 3: H I'm good yeah, I'm straight.
- 24:40Speaker 4: I got money, I got a job, got a house,
- 24:43Speaker 4: I got cars, women every which way.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Like I'm you know, I'm like.
- 24:49Speaker 4: And the thing is, the athlete is say, you don't
- 24:52Speaker 4: think they don't even know what love is for real?
- 24:55Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, because you've been sought out
- 24:56Speaker 4: after as a yes, this give me game and give
- 25:01Speaker 4: me right.
- 25:01Speaker 3: So outside of your probably your parents.
- 25:04Speaker 4: And a lot of times if that, you know what
- 25:06Speaker 4: I'm saying, because once they figured out you good at sports,
- 25:10Speaker 4: and it's it's like I've seen it over the years.
- 25:12Speaker 4: I'm twelve years in and dynamics change between you know,
- 25:17Speaker 4: at at athletes and their parents and significant others, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 4: and and it's it's unfortunate because a lot of times
- 25:24Speaker 4: they don't realize what they're doing to the athlete that
- 25:26Speaker 4: it is too late.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and usually you're turning them into machines, and you
- 25:32Speaker 1: turn them into robots to where they don't even understand
- 25:35Speaker 1: their own humanity. And when they no longer can perform,
- 25:40Speaker 1: and you don't have the applause, you don't have the
- 25:43Speaker 1: od of boys, and you don't have the cheers of
- 25:46Speaker 1: the crowd, and you don't have the energy of the
- 25:49Speaker 1: stadium and you're left with just you.
- 25:52Speaker 2: What do you do with you?
- 25:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why we you know, and you can attest
- 25:57Speaker 4: to this as well, is you got to finders who
- 26:00Speaker 4: are why you're still while you're playing. Y'all start early.
- 26:03Speaker 4: That stadium get when that stadium get quiet on you.
- 26:06Speaker 4: It's tough to navigate, and especially if you have a
- 26:08Speaker 4: partner that you can't navigate, that can't navigate with you,
- 26:11Speaker 4: you know, to navigate certain space together.
- 26:13Speaker 3: But doing that alone man, and drives guys crazy.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I've seen it, man, I I you know, when I
- 26:19Speaker 1: was talking to your guys, I can see that they
- 26:21Speaker 1: were so locked in and and I can tell that
- 26:24Speaker 1: they was receptive of it, because you know, I was
- 26:28Speaker 1: watching Bishop Jakes when he was interviewing Cam Newton, and
- 26:33Speaker 1: and he was talking to Cam about you know, uh,
- 26:38Speaker 1: there's a you that's.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Leaving you that you won't even remember in some parts.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And I'm kind of paraphrasing, because there's parts of us
- 26:46Speaker 1: that will be irrelevant at some stage in life, absolutely
- 26:51Speaker 1: that somebody may remember you.
- 26:53Speaker 2: It said, oh oh yeah, he.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Was such and such he used to be saying.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, But but there's a you that you have to
- 26:59Speaker 1: become comfortable with, uh, with the you that is no
- 27:03Speaker 1: longer needed, or you that is no longer in function
- 27:08Speaker 1: because its function doesn't support and and and doesn't serve
- 27:13Speaker 1: you in the capacity of now and what I love
- 27:17Speaker 1: that you're doing and and and incorporating. You know, the
- 27:20Speaker 1: mental health aspect. The mental health aspect with these athletes
- 27:26Speaker 1: is because I'm not really concerned about how you perform.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And it's a big thing and it's important, but if
- 27:36Speaker 1: your performance off field isn't good, on field would be
- 27:42Speaker 1: a nightmare when you can't do it right and you
- 27:47Speaker 1: find yourself sitting in a dark room. Uh, you got
- 27:51Speaker 1: the contract, but you don't have a peace of mind.
- 27:55Speaker 1: You got the brands, and you got all of the
- 27:59Speaker 1: who's who and you can call, but you don't have
- 28:02Speaker 1: a real space or real community where you could be
- 28:06Speaker 1: you and not be the you that everyone is so
- 28:09Speaker 1: accustomed to seeing, right and you learning more about you
- 28:15Speaker 1: to become vulnerable with them allows.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Them to see the man that they have to be
- 28:19Speaker 2: beyond what you're training them.
- 28:21Speaker 3: To do, absolutely without a doubt.
- 28:22Speaker 4: And it goes a long way because man, and they
- 28:25Speaker 4: notice it, you know, Like I said, I don't talk
- 28:27Speaker 4: to about guys like drill sergeant A real conversations. I
- 28:30Speaker 4: don't yell when I coach you're training, I don't you know,
- 28:33Speaker 4: I say, I don't have a whistle out there. You know,
- 28:35Speaker 4: everything is conversational. You know, when you get guys to
- 28:38Speaker 4: open up and be honest with them and you learn
- 28:40Speaker 4: about them, you know what they like with it, just
- 28:44Speaker 4: like what they're going through, what they've overcome. And it's
- 28:47Speaker 4: a beautiful process, man, especially when you can steer guys,
- 28:52Speaker 4: you know, out of the ditch when they're about to
- 28:53Speaker 4: drive off the road. You know, that's always It's always
- 28:56Speaker 4: been special me and it also helps me. It gives
- 28:58Speaker 4: me a more sense of purpose well, you know, to
- 29:01Speaker 4: be able to provide and be vulnerable ourselfs, be able
- 29:05Speaker 4: to provide that space for and you know, it's like
- 29:08Speaker 4: I'm saying about sometimes it's a passion project. Well for
- 29:11Speaker 4: me and doing the work with the athletes.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so I want to transition. You had an athlete
- 29:18Speaker 1: that that was a prototype, a big personality, but then
- 29:29Speaker 1: you can also see when I looked in his eyes,
- 29:34Speaker 1: you can also see that there was just some parts
- 29:36Speaker 1: in him that's just like you know, I'd rather be
- 29:38Speaker 1: left alone. Uh, he goes through this life changing experience
- 29:44Speaker 1: that we later found out that he had nothing to do.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Kiren was was a generational talent, you know what I mean,
- 29:54Speaker 1: big frame, catching with his hand, big physical guy.
- 29:59Speaker 2: You had them in your pre draft camp.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And for most of you don't know, Moe was working
- 30:06Speaker 1: with Calvin Lacy every day.
- 30:10Speaker 2: How has that been for you?
- 30:13Speaker 1: As I'm sure that you still grieve his passing having
- 30:17Speaker 1: worked with him and having spent so many hours with him.
- 30:21Speaker 4: That was tough man. That was That was my tough one.
- 30:24Speaker 4: So unfortunately, I've had that situation happen five.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Times, so the outcome outcome five times.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Because statistically right, and you know statistics about when it
- 30:41Speaker 4: comes to those things of that nature. I've trained over
- 30:43Speaker 4: a thousand athletes, you know what I'm saying, professional not
- 30:46Speaker 4: just that don't include like high school or collegs like
- 30:50Speaker 4: pro just pros. And you know, one way or another,
- 30:55Speaker 4: for one reason or or another, those situations that happened.
- 30:58Speaker 4: But that one hit home because because you can, like
- 31:01Speaker 4: you say, you can look at you as you can
- 31:03Speaker 4: see it. Man, you can see it, and it wasn't
- 31:06Speaker 4: performative of how he was with everybody. He was a
- 31:08Speaker 4: true beautiful soul, you know, and you know he was
- 31:11Speaker 4: going through something and I was really you know, it's
- 31:17Speaker 4: differently yet everybody goes through stuff, right, So everybody goes
- 31:19Speaker 4: through stuff, and it's different when you're going through something
- 31:23Speaker 4: with somebody and then they come out on the other
- 31:26Speaker 4: side victorious of it.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:28Speaker 4: It's a completely different thing when you are going through
- 31:31Speaker 4: something with somebody.
- 31:32Speaker 3: And they don't come out victorious on the other side.
- 31:35Speaker 4: So that one messed me up, man, from the three
- 31:39Speaker 4: o'clock in the morning when I got the call immediately
- 31:41Speaker 4: when it happened to the service, to me being pissed
- 31:45Speaker 4: off at my job for how they handled the situation,
- 31:48Speaker 4: to you know, after the fact when the real videos
- 31:56Speaker 4: and stuff came out, and you know, he just it's unfortunate.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Man.
- 32:01Speaker 3: It hurts because it for his family.
- 32:03Speaker 4: His siblings, mom, dad, everybody, because like I said, he
- 32:07Speaker 4: was generational, you know what I'm saying, but generation on
- 32:09Speaker 4: and off the field.
- 32:10Speaker 3: You know, it's a great human being.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Real Louisiana boy didn't bother nobody, you know, he was
- 32:16Speaker 4: always a joy of being around. So going through something
- 32:19Speaker 4: like that, man, it's tough because it could be anybody.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:22Speaker 4: I had an athlete the other day before your session.
- 32:25Speaker 4: He was like, man, he said, Man, do I have
- 32:27Speaker 4: to go to the mental stuff? He said, all my
- 32:30Speaker 4: mental good? I said, man, you think your mental is
- 32:31Speaker 4: good until it isn't, you know, so you need to
- 32:34Speaker 4: get out in front of anything that could come your way.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Of course, he took his essl stairs. But seeing that
- 32:41Speaker 4: makes me advocated and go through that. I was already
- 32:44Speaker 4: advocating for it before, right, because once again you think
- 32:47Speaker 4: you're okay until you're not.
- 32:49Speaker 3: And and it can be anybody.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Can be It can literally be anybody in those situations,
- 32:55Speaker 4: especially when it could man the cars, the all man,
- 32:58Speaker 4: there's so many different ways, so many different scenarios that
- 33:00Speaker 4: can happen.
- 33:01Speaker 3: So dealing with the chiro stuff, man, it was tough.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Still tough seeing his siblings, seeing his parents, you know,
- 33:08Speaker 4: on social media and everything like that. You know, but
- 33:13Speaker 4: you find your will power knowing that now you got
- 33:16Speaker 4: an even.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Bigger purpose to find the lighted more people. Right.
- 33:21Speaker 4: So when I talk about like my passion project, okay,
- 33:23Speaker 4: hey all right, maybe I you know, for me, it
- 33:27Speaker 4: was like my meeting thought was what else could I
- 33:29Speaker 4: have done.
- 33:30Speaker 3: You know, it was like what else? What else could
- 33:32Speaker 3: I have said?
- 33:33Speaker 4: What else could I have you know, put in front
- 33:36Speaker 4: of him?
- 33:36Speaker 3: What else could you know? Could have been at his forefoot?
- 33:42Speaker 3: You know?
- 33:42Speaker 2: Shit?
- 33:42Speaker 4: Should I have driven him back to back? You know
- 33:44Speaker 4: what I'm saying, So different types, all type of stuff
- 33:46Speaker 4: starts running through your head, man, And I think it
- 33:49Speaker 4: goes to say for me is that you can't flinch.
- 33:54Speaker 4: And what I mean by that is that if you
- 33:55Speaker 4: think something's wrong with somebody.
- 33:57Speaker 3: You can't flinch. You gotta go in full head, full
- 33:59Speaker 3: steam ahead, you know.
- 34:00Speaker 4: And you know, and like I said, peeling back those layers, Okay,
- 34:05Speaker 4: like hey man, you do it.
- 34:05Speaker 3: You're good, You're good, blah blah blah. Yeah, they always
- 34:08Speaker 3: gonna say me, I'm fine, you know, you gotta help.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Are you sure? You know what I'm saying. I'm noticing this.
- 34:13Speaker 3: I'm noticing that y'all've really really really started.
- 34:16Speaker 4: To try to dive and deep into peel layers with
- 34:18Speaker 4: my guys as organically as possible before and after that situation,
- 34:23Speaker 4: but since.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Then, and another hype for.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Sure, Yeah, you know that that situation with Karraen Man was.
- 34:34Speaker 2: It was.
- 34:35Speaker 1: It was you know, anytime that happens, because I've lived
- 34:39Speaker 1: and made it to the other side of it. It's
- 34:42Speaker 1: always triggering for me because I often think about my
- 34:49Speaker 1: testimony of surviving two attempts h and to try to,
- 34:58Speaker 1: you know, in some way put into work.
- 35:02Speaker 2: What are they thinking in our last moments, you know?
- 35:06Speaker 1: And I often tell people, I said, if you're not careful,
- 35:13Speaker 1: pressure has a way of making you feel that there's
- 35:19Speaker 1: no way out, and that the only way out is
- 35:26Speaker 1: you not being here but your exit. And one of
- 35:31Speaker 1: the things that I have really grown to learn in
- 35:36Speaker 1: this space is just really understanding the power of not
- 35:42Speaker 1: just creating space because we all tell you, oh, you
- 35:44Speaker 1: got to create space and make us safe space, but
- 35:47Speaker 1: holding it because when he was going through that ordeal, man,
- 35:52Speaker 1: I think one of the and and one of the
- 35:54Speaker 1: things man that I wish, you know, I didn't have
- 35:58Speaker 1: social media when I was coming up, thank God. But
- 36:03Speaker 1: what I'm hoping that as these athletes, as I'm so
- 36:06Speaker 1: excited that they got these n IL deals, everybody's get
- 36:08Speaker 1: into the bag, but hoping that they're support here because
- 36:13Speaker 1: if you ain't got this, and if this is not stable,
- 36:17Speaker 1: if this is not in a place, and it becomes
- 36:19Speaker 1: very tenuous, and it becomes very vulnerable and becomes a
- 36:27Speaker 1: very fragile. It doesn't matter what they give you, you
- 36:31Speaker 1: know what I mean. And I think it's so important
- 36:35Speaker 1: and it's so vital that we look at these athletes
- 36:39Speaker 1: as being more than just spectacles of our entertainment, that
- 36:43Speaker 1: these are human beings, because we have treated these athletes
- 36:48Speaker 1: more as if they're just robots, and when they.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Have human moments, we're surprised.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Same stuff you do just don on TeV exactly one hundred.
- 37:00Speaker 1: It's like that they're humans that and and when I
- 37:03Speaker 1: look at he's a.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Baby, absolutely absolutely, And it is tough because you know
- 37:10Speaker 4: they are humans, you know, Like I said, I gotta
- 37:13Speaker 4: I have a roster Kyra Lacy, John Moran, Javonte Davis Quin,
- 37:18Speaker 4: Shawn Juggins, like.
- 37:20Speaker 3: So much stuff.
- 37:21Speaker 4: We have to go through the fire with these guys
- 37:23Speaker 4: with and make sure that I, like you talk about
- 37:25Speaker 4: holding that space and and not turning my back on
- 37:28Speaker 4: them because a lot of people will to do that.
- 37:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 37:31Speaker 4: And it's it is bad now because like I was
- 37:33Speaker 4: saying earlier, you know, now with the nil stuff, because
- 37:36Speaker 4: the hero complex is starting earlier now is taking away
- 37:39Speaker 4: the innocence for a lot of these young kids.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Right, So you're getting paid.
- 37:43Speaker 4: In high school, right, you get paid in high school
- 37:45Speaker 4: now the more hands come out early, So high school
- 37:48Speaker 4: I am to pay nobody.
- 37:49Speaker 3: I have to, you know what I'm saying. I have
- 37:51Speaker 3: to you know, have the hero complex.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Heah, I have to do it emotionally, but I have
- 37:55Speaker 4: to do it financially, right and and which makes everything.
- 38:00Speaker 3: And I've already seen the trickle down effect to that.
- 38:02Speaker 4: And you know, I can't save the whole world, but
- 38:05Speaker 4: I do hope and pray that these people are or
- 38:08Speaker 4: taking care of these young men and women's mental you know,
- 38:11Speaker 4: as their ass getting to the bag. Getting into the
- 38:14Speaker 4: bag has his consequences at the same time, so consequences,
- 38:22Speaker 4: man has its consequences.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Man, brother, I just want to say, mold man, I'm
- 38:28Speaker 1: proud of you, brother, black man and black man. I'm
- 38:34Speaker 1: proud of who you're becoming. I'm proud of what you represent.
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm proud of who you are to these young men.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Uh.
- 38:42Speaker 1: It brings me great joy to see somebody else thriving
- 38:44Speaker 1: in a space that I used to be in and
- 38:47Speaker 1: to see you doing it in that way because when
- 38:49Speaker 1: I was training athletes, I didn't understand the mental aspect
- 38:53Speaker 1: of it, which is why God was like, I'm gonna
- 38:55Speaker 1: move you out of here and I'm gonna put you
- 38:56Speaker 1: over there because I need you to focus on this.
- 38:58Speaker 1: But also he at me focusing on my own healing,
- 39:02Speaker 1: right because for me, sports was escape.
- 39:05Speaker 2: It was how I was.
- 39:06Speaker 3: So that was most of us growing up.
- 39:07Speaker 4: It was an escape what I had going on at
- 39:09Speaker 4: home and in the neighborhood. My sports was got played
- 39:12Speaker 4: five six different sports, and it was an escape.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Man.
- 39:14Speaker 4: It was my It was my safe haven, you know what.
- 39:17Speaker 4: And now that pressure, you know, for a lot of
- 39:21Speaker 4: it takes the fun out of it for a lot
- 39:23Speaker 4: of these young man. So I'm trying to just make
- 39:25Speaker 4: sure that we still have our joy.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Man.
- 39:29Speaker 3: You know you all love it.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Man, brother, I love it.
- 39:35Speaker 1: You may have an young athlete, male or female, and
- 39:40Speaker 1: you may be getting them training. You may have them
- 39:45Speaker 1: going to the best hidden coach. You may have them
- 39:48Speaker 1: going to the best throwing coach. You may have them
- 39:51Speaker 1: doing position drills, you may have them doing sports.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Specific or position specific work.
- 39:57Speaker 1: But I want to say this that mental it's just
- 40:01Speaker 1: as important as their physical because though we play the
- 40:06Speaker 1: game with our body, but you do life from your mind.
- 40:12Speaker 1: And what I'm hoping is that as you watch this
- 40:15Speaker 1: episode and you listen to Mo and listen to this
- 40:17Speaker 1: journey and the work that he does, that you see
- 40:20Speaker 1: how important it is for these athletes to have the
- 40:24Speaker 1: balance of not only just.
- 40:27Speaker 2: The physical training, but the mental training as.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Well, because you're only as strong as your mind is,
- 40:35Speaker 1: and so many times we think that you only strong
- 40:37Speaker 1: as your body, but you only show in your mind.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Because I've seen guys with great physical strength but mentally weak.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Mo.
- 40:46Speaker 1: As we're closing out, Man, two things I want to
- 40:49Speaker 1: ask of you, brother, and I'll come back to my
- 40:52Speaker 1: last question, but if you can speak, and this is
- 40:56Speaker 1: your camera right here, if you can speak to an
- 40:57Speaker 1: athlete and share some words of wisdom to them, Man,
- 41:01Speaker 1: what would you say?
- 41:02Speaker 4: I would definitely say, Man, if I had to speak
- 41:04Speaker 4: to an athlete, I'll just have to say, Man, it's okay.
- 41:08Speaker 4: It's okay, no matter what you're going through or what's
- 41:11Speaker 4: going on, it's okay. And what I mean by it it's
- 41:14Speaker 4: okay is it's okay to feel how you feel.
- 41:17Speaker 3: It's okay to go through what you're going through.
- 41:19Speaker 4: It's okay to get help, It's okay to say something verbally,
- 41:24Speaker 4: you know, it's okay all these big emotions that these
- 41:26Speaker 4: guys go through, guys and women go through that I
- 41:28Speaker 4: work with, it's okay. And nobody's going to look down
- 41:32Speaker 4: on you. Nobody's gonna think less than of you. Nobody's
- 41:34Speaker 4: going to shun you, you know, for being vulnerable and
- 41:38Speaker 4: being a human being because a lot of times that
- 41:40Speaker 4: you don't have the opportunity to be just that openly, right,
- 41:44Speaker 4: you got to do.
- 41:45Speaker 3: It behind closed doors. And man, it's okay. That's all.
- 41:49Speaker 4: And anybody that I've worked with, I told you about
- 41:52Speaker 4: my five situations, and I wish I could if I
- 41:55Speaker 4: could do one thing, man, I would just hold them
- 41:56Speaker 4: and say it's okay, right to feel how you feel
- 42:00Speaker 4: and go through what it's going to because we're here
- 42:02Speaker 4: with you and there's likely somebody around you that's also
- 42:05Speaker 4: with you as well.
- 42:06Speaker 3: Just got to be open and be okay about it.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so thank you for sharing that message. Man.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Is My show is all about healing, is about mental
- 42:15Speaker 1: health and wellness and all those things, and always asks
- 42:18Speaker 1: every guest this question and when I ask you to say,
- 42:23Speaker 1: what does when you hear the word healing, what does
- 42:26Speaker 1: that mean tomorrow?
- 42:28Speaker 2: To me?
- 42:28Speaker 3: I think healing means first and foremost.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Facing what you're trying to heal from, right to whether
- 42:35Speaker 4: it's how you are up, your upbringing, how somebody treated you,
- 42:40Speaker 4: how a relation looks, relationship impacted you. You gotta face it,
- 42:45Speaker 4: You gotta you gotta tear it down and face what
- 42:47Speaker 4: you're really going to. It makes you feel because I
- 42:49Speaker 4: used to have a big problem with anger, and I
- 42:52Speaker 4: had to figure out why why why are you so mad?
- 42:55Speaker 4: Like where you so upset about? Why does every little
- 42:57Speaker 4: thing tick you tick you off? Or why do certain
- 42:59Speaker 4: things sort of situations trigger you? And you know and
- 43:03Speaker 4: and and that's as a huge thing for me. Right
- 43:06Speaker 4: So so when it's time to heal, man, you just
- 43:10Speaker 4: gotta feel what you what do you have big emotions about?
- 43:13Speaker 2: Right?
- 43:13Speaker 4: So you got to face a head on That's what
- 43:15Speaker 4: I think immediately when I think about healing. And because
- 43:19Speaker 4: wes out of ten bro, I feel like we know
- 43:22Speaker 4: what areas and what arenas we need to improve all.
- 43:25Speaker 4: You know, it's not like we're dumb founded, like we
- 43:27Speaker 4: know we just put it to the side, right, can't
- 43:31Speaker 4: put it to the side, and you got to face
- 43:32Speaker 4: a head on man.
- 43:34Speaker 2: But I love that. Man. I'm gonna tell you that's
- 43:36Speaker 2: so powerful. And as we're closing our.
- 43:40Speaker 1: I don't know what you need to heal from, and
- 43:43Speaker 1: I don't know what you push to the side. I
- 43:45Speaker 1: don't know what you have said I can do it tomorrow.
- 43:50Speaker 1: So many times our next is upheld by what we're
- 43:55Speaker 1: not willing to do and are now. And I want
- 43:59Speaker 1: to challenge you, as my brother Mo said, you gotta
- 44:01Speaker 1: face it. And sometimes facing it is probably the most
- 44:05Speaker 1: difficult thing because you will.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Probably say, doctor j I don't want to touch that.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Matter of fact, let me.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Put some gloves on and touch it, because to touch
- 44:16Speaker 1: it it just makes me feel icky. It makes me
- 44:19Speaker 1: feel nasty, It makes me feel some type of way.
- 44:21Speaker 1: But that's healing. Healing is facing the ugliness of you,
- 44:27Speaker 1: not because something is wrong, but something went wrong, and
- 44:32Speaker 1: somewhere in that you lost who you truly are and
- 44:36Speaker 1: who you truly were meant to be. Because trauma has
- 44:39Speaker 1: a way of restructing our brains. And I'm challenging you
- 44:44Speaker 1: to face it so you can become a better youth.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Listen. I want to say thank you to my brother
- 44:50Speaker 2: mo Man. This is great brother. Man.
- 44:53Speaker 1: I love your wisdom and insight. This is a brilliant brother.
- 44:57Speaker 1: This brother is all over the country athletes phenomenal. But
- 45:03Speaker 1: you know, I'm you know, I don't like to talk
- 45:06Speaker 1: about how phenomenal people are in their fields. I like
- 45:09Speaker 1: to talk about how phenomenal people are and just their being.
- 45:13Speaker 1: He's an even phenomenal brother, even better person. And that's
- 45:18Speaker 1: what really brings Jordan me. Man, to see your humility man,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and even in all your giftedness and your skill set
- 45:26Speaker 1: with these athletes.
- 45:28Speaker 2: So this is just here with Doctor J.
