Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: An interesting article in the Herald yesterday about army training
- 0:03Speaker 1: at Wayoudu the troops now singing from the same song sheet.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It seems as Winston and Judith in terms of how
- 0:09Speaker 1: threatening the world is at the moment. Senior army commanders
- 0:12Speaker 1: quoted as saying, the pressure on our defense force is
- 0:15Speaker 1: greater than at any time in recent living memory. And
- 0:19Speaker 1: they're betting billions. This is the government billions of dollars
- 0:23Speaker 1: and extra funding for equipment, for kit for houses on
- 0:26Speaker 1: the base that aren't covered in mold. But in order
- 0:29Speaker 1: for any of that to be useful, you need soldiers.
- 0:31Speaker 1: You need personnel. In order to get personnel, you need
- 0:34Speaker 1: people who understand the importance of the task at hand,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and I just don't think enough young people, people of
- 0:40Speaker 1: mind generation and younger actually get it. Look no further
- 0:45Speaker 1: than Germany, where they're protesting over a requirement for men
- 0:49Speaker 1: aged forty five and younger to inform the government of
- 0:52Speaker 1: their whereabouts if they leave the country for three months
- 0:55Speaker 1: or more. If they go on an oe, you've got
- 0:57Speaker 1: to tell the government where you're going. It's similar to
- 0:59Speaker 1: a rule they had during the Cold War, and it
- 1:02Speaker 1: is basically preparing for a time when they may need
- 1:05Speaker 1: a return to conscription compulsory service. Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Denmark, Finland,
- 1:12Speaker 1: to name a few, already do this. The Korean pop
- 1:15Speaker 1: band BTS you heard them before. They've just celebrated the
- 1:18Speaker 1: end of their military service with a concert and soul.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But overwhelmingly in the West, there is I don't know,
- 1:26Speaker 1: there's a bit of ignorance, would that be the word
- 1:29Speaker 1: antipathy of the threats that our leaders tell us we're facing.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's like we don't quite believe that there are any
- 1:36Speaker 1: How could you teach the wellness generation, the influencer youths,
- 1:41Speaker 1: the zoomers as they call them, that in order to
- 1:43Speaker 1: enjoy the comforts of liberal democracy, sometimes you might have
- 1:46Speaker 1: to fight for them. You might have to make sacrifices
- 1:49Speaker 1: for them. We've not been to war, we've not experienced war.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We don't even want serious criminals, the criminal youths going
- 1:57Speaker 1: to boot camps, let alone us. There's a general feeling,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think that wars are fought in far away lands
- 2:03Speaker 1: by somebody else, when evidence is mounting that one of
- 2:06Speaker 1: these wars might one day soon be fought closer to home,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and the others might actually be us for more from
- 2:13Speaker 1: Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to news talks
- 2:16Speaker 1: it'd be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast
- 2:19Speaker 1: on iHeartRadio
