Speaker 1: Do you know what's really starting to rub me the
• 0:01
Speaker 1: wrong way? And we'll come to the chateau in a second.
• 0:04
Speaker 1: It's not that it's governments telling us to do more things.
• 0:08
Speaker 1: This morning, we've got the government coming out with yet
• 0:10
Speaker 1: another hotline, a tip line. It sounds fancy, sounds it
• 0:14
Speaker 1: almost sounds efficient, doesn't it. It's a hotline to report
• 0:18
Speaker 1: road cones, a road cone tip line. Sorry, but if
• 0:22
Speaker 1: the problem is that there are too many road cones
• 0:25
Speaker 1: on the road and there are necessary for the work
• 0:28
Speaker 1: that's being carried out, which half of them appear to be,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: then why do you need us to tell you that
• 0:34
Speaker 1: this is the annoying part. Surely, if we just had better,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: clearer rules and less bs, we wouldn't need a road
• 0:42
Speaker 1: cone tip line, a pothole tip line, a one oh
• 0:45
Speaker 1: five tip line, a beneficiary tip line. But when someone's
• 0:50
Speaker 1: breaking the beneficiary rules, either you know what you're doing,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: you've got smart people working for you, you've got smart systems,
• 0:57
Speaker 1: or you don't. And every time I hear of another
• 0:59
Speaker 1: tip plane, I realize they have no idea. Tip lines
• 1:02
Speaker 1: are the equivalent of a safety calming measure in the traffic.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: Those weird speed bumps or narrowing roads designed to make
• 1:11
Speaker 1: people feel better when they're driving around. All they really
• 1:15
Speaker 1: do is piss people off and reveal how rubbish the
• 1:18
Speaker 1: road design was to begin with. Plus, just think about this. Really,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: there's a bunch of road cones and a dumb place
• 1:25
Speaker 1: on a busy road. We've all seen it, work safe
• 1:27
Speaker 1: NZTA Council. They all drive past this busy spot every day.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: Then you've got Barbera and a little Honda Civic. She
• 1:34
Speaker 1: drives past it. She calls it and I'll call the
• 1:36
Speaker 1: tip line. Barrie, he's in his truck and trailer. He
• 1:40
Speaker 1: calls it, and I'll call the tip line. You're a
• 1:41
Speaker 1: good citizen, Barry. And then Sally of course, pigs that
• 1:45
Speaker 1: kids up from Score at three pm every day. She
• 1:47
Speaker 1: calls them the tip line. They all ring the tip line.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: They all report the same thing. It will then be
• 1:53
Speaker 1: somebody's job to sort through the tips. Of course, you.
• 1:56
  Speaker 2: Know, barriees, we've got Barbera's, We've got Sally's what streets
• 1:59
Speaker 2: dad or she called from the sandgor somebody else has
• 2:02
Speaker 2: to triarge the tip line and the tips.
• 2:05
Speaker 1: Remember, so there's two jobs. There are two people employed
• 2:09
Speaker 1: in this already you see where I'm going with this.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: In three weeks, Barry, Sally and Barb might get a
• 2:16
Speaker 1: letter in the mail because the post only runs two
• 2:18
Speaker 1: days a week. Now, remember the letter says we're looking
• 2:20
Speaker 1: into this issue for you. Meanwhile, one hundred government or
• 2:23
Speaker 1: council people have walked or driven past the road cone
• 2:27
Speaker 1: Armageddon and nothing has changed. This is the problem with
• 2:31
Speaker 1: tip lines, This is the problem with governments. This is
• 2:34
Speaker 1: the problem with people who work for them, and we
• 2:38
Speaker 1: shouldn't be one of them. For more from Early edition
