Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Jason Walls: Newstalk ZB Political Editor on the Green Party voting to invoke the waka jumping legislation for Darleen Tana
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Darling Tana. She looks like she's going to be given
- 0:02Speaker 1: the boot from Parliament's all up to the speaker.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The Greens have basically voted and voked and said, yes,
- 0:08Speaker 1: we want the Waker jumping legislation to apply here. We
- 0:11Speaker 1: want to have Darling Tana Woker jumped. Jason wolves as
- 0:14Speaker 1: News talks of Be's political editor. He's with me this morning, Jason,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good morning, Good morning, Rain. Good to have you on
- 0:20Speaker 1: the show. So they had a press last night, right,
- 0:22Speaker 1: what are they saying?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Indeed, it was about nine to thirty last night, so
- 0:26Speaker 2: it actually sounds like the meeting wrapped up a little
- 0:29Speaker 2: bit sooner than they had anticipated because it was thought
- 0:32Speaker 2: that they'd be doing a press conference this morning at
- 0:34Speaker 2: about seven am. But that's been kaibosh because Chloe Swarbrick
- 0:38Speaker 2: fronted press last night and essentially she came out and
- 0:41Speaker 2: said yes, the Greens came to a basic consensus on
- 0:44Speaker 2: this and said that the party delegates want to get
- 0:48Speaker 2: Darling Tanner out of Parliament and they've voted to use
- 0:51Speaker 2: the Waker jumping legislation to do so, which essentially is
- 0:54Speaker 2: them saying that they think that she distorts the proportionality
- 0:57Speaker 2: of Parliament and they've written to the Speaker to suggested
- 1:01Speaker 2: as such. So really in the hands of Jerry Browne
- 1:05Speaker 2: now and we'll hopefully find out from him today what
- 1:07Speaker 2: the next steps are.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's obviously he had a while to
- 1:10Speaker 1: think about it. Interesting the vote though, it was all
- 1:13Speaker 1: of the one hundred and eighty five delegates voters to
- 1:14Speaker 1: do this, and apparently the likes of Matiia today coming
- 1:17Speaker 1: back to be quite influential in the vote.
- 1:21Speaker 2: The return of Materia today is it's massive. She has
- 1:25Speaker 2: been basically absent from the political landscape since she quit
- 1:30Speaker 2: politics many many years ago. Of course, she did that
- 1:32Speaker 2: in quite a dramatic fashion before the twenty seventeen election,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and she hasn't really been seen in public in terms
- 1:40Speaker 2: of any sort of political part to play since then.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So her coming back is such a shocked surprise move.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Even Chloe Swarbrick said that she had no idea that
- 1:49Speaker 2: she would be making this contribution to the Call last night,
- 1:54Speaker 2: and it really just goes to show how deep seated
- 1:57Speaker 2: this issue is within the Green Party. I mean, Ryan,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you'll remember that it was the Greens that were the
- 2:02Speaker 2: most strident critics of the walker jumping legislation.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Here we are, but Jason, here we are. The interesting
- 2:09Speaker 1: thing about Matidia to day is there is a woman
- 2:11Speaker 1: who was scorned, who left the party because she admitted
- 2:15Speaker 1: to the benefit stuff years and years ago. Maybe she's
- 2:18Speaker 1: coming back saying, look, if you stuff up, if I
- 2:21Speaker 1: had to leave, you know, then perhaps you need to
- 2:25Speaker 1: as well.
- 2:26Speaker 2: There could well be an element of that, and I'm
- 2:28Speaker 2: sure as the days go on we'll get more details
- 2:31Speaker 2: of what it was the Matidia today actually said. But listen,
- 2:35Speaker 2: it was enough to get a party such as the Greens,
- 2:38Speaker 2: which is so democratized sometimes to a fault, to all
- 2:42Speaker 2: come together on one issue like this. And as I said,
- 2:45Speaker 2: given it was the Greens that were the ones against
- 2:47Speaker 2: the walker jumping legislation even being in place, for all
- 2:52Speaker 2: as many delegates to come together and agree as they
- 2:54Speaker 2: have been, I think it's actually remarkable that this has happened,
- 2:57Speaker 2: and it's really draws a bit of a line under
- 3:00Speaker 2: this whole situation.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a complete sort of moral one eighty in
- 3:04Speaker 1: some ways, isn't it. Jason, Thank you very much for that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Great to have you on the show. Jason Will's News
