- 0:00Speaker 1: I really hate when there's someone playing live music when
- 0:02Speaker 1: I'm eating.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Near the end and the beginning.
- 0:03Speaker 3: Yeah, because you want to talk, and you're like.
- 0:10Speaker 5: That's exactly the sound you make.
- 0:12Speaker 3: It's like you have to drop it before you go.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Did you see the look on that guy's face pushing
- 0:15Speaker 1: two babies? Like, yep, this is my life.
- 0:18Speaker 6: Yeah, don't ever have kids.
- 0:19Speaker 5: But see, the thing is, that guy, he lives for
- 0:21Speaker 5: that little... It's like, thank you, thank you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good to be appreciated. You know, I'm here every single night.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Five to seven. If you have any requests, just let
- 0:30Speaker 2: me know. This upcoming Monday, I'm going to have another
- 0:33Speaker 2: friend here.
- 0:35Speaker 5: She's going to be out. She's going to have her lute.
- 0:36Speaker 7: Nancy.
- 0:37Speaker 2: She's a good friend of mine. We're just going to
- 0:42Speaker 2: play any kind of famous... It'll maybe be like a
- 0:44Speaker 2: Russian night.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Fans of Russian music.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You're like the Bob Ross of.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Rambling.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah. You had that calm.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Don't be afraid of the rambling now.
- 0:55Speaker 8: We're just going to provide vocals for things you can't see.
- 1:00Speaker 8: It's a visual gag. You guys at home will appreciate.
- 1:07Speaker 3: This. This is Amy Simons, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:25Speaker 1: That was me melting down. It's showtime.
- 1:40Speaker 9: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 1:43Speaker 9: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 1:48Speaker 9: and parental discretion is advised.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 2:24Speaker 10: He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He
- 2:30Speaker 10: had a voice that could make a wolverine purr. And
- 2:35Speaker 10: suits so fine, they made Sinatra look like a hobo.
- 2:42Speaker 11: Way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions.
- 2:47Speaker 11: So they've got to find those extra cups to fill.
- 2:51Speaker 11: They got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
- 2:56Speaker 8: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 2:59Speaker 12: I'm Fred.
- 3:00Speaker 8: I'm Bo.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm Marlena.
- 3:02Speaker 6: I'm Greg.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I'm Ben.
- 3:03Speaker 8: And it's time for another session of the Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Cappuccino my butt. I still drink coffee.
- 3:10Speaker 9: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 3:13Speaker 12: It's time for Decaffeinated Movie Geek.
- 3:16Speaker 8: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 3:18Speaker 8: Nancy's Bagel Grounds, where we will get together, drink coffee,
- 3:21Speaker 8: talk movies, and make fun of people passing by outside, usually.
- 3:25Speaker 8: And with that, we would like to welcome a new
- 3:28Speaker 8: recruit slash victim to the show. We would like to
- 3:32Speaker 8: welcome Erin.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Hi.
- 3:34Speaker 6: Hi.
- 3:36Speaker 8: Um, this goes against her better judgment, I suppose, but
- 3:41Speaker 8: for quite a while now, you have seemed interested, and
- 3:45Speaker 8: I've been trying to, like, keep you at bay. I've
- 3:47Speaker 8: been trying to protect you, really. I'm just like, no, no, no.
- 3:50Speaker 8: This is like the whole summer of, like, no, you
- 3:52Speaker 8: really don't want anything to do. No, it's really, you
- 3:54Speaker 8: really better not, no. And it continued on, and every week,
- 3:58Speaker 8: but What are you guys talking about this week? Okay,
- 4:02Speaker 8: but you really don't want to... Yeah, it just continued
- 4:05Speaker 8: on until finally, like, you just want to be on
- 4:08Speaker 8: the show. So, I believe, should we also inform them
- 4:12Speaker 8: of your entry level into geekdom so they're not... This
- 4:16Speaker 8: seems to be our new thing. We seem to be
- 4:20Speaker 8: taking on, like, projects to turn people into geeks, really.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 8: After our adventures with Rose, Erin considers herself just a
- 4:29Speaker 8: minor geek at this point, so we're trying to school
- 4:32Speaker 8: her in the ways of geekdom and bring her up
- 4:34Speaker 8: to speed. Our level of, oh, God, we can't leave
- 4:37Speaker 8: the house. Or the lack thereof. Yeah, it's really sad.
- 4:40Speaker 9: Is what it is.
- 4:41Speaker 8: So this is what you have to aspire to.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 4:46Speaker 6: That's so sad.
- 4:47Speaker 12: Okay.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Okay.
- 4:49Speaker 8: So, with that, again, being the new victim, Erin, I
- 4:54Speaker 8: ask you, what blend of coffee are we drinking this week?
- 4:57Speaker 1: We are drinking Pacific Blacktail.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Excellent.
- 5:00Speaker 8: I think we're going to keep you around just for that.
- 5:02Speaker 6: That is the first good name we've ever had.
- 5:05Speaker 8: Quite professional. Unlike everyone else who's ever done it on
- 5:09Speaker 8: this show.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Insult the company.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Well, it's only when it's Oregon Trail, dudes.
- 5:12Speaker 8: Have you been here for Thundermuck? I mean, come on.
- 5:15Speaker 13: No, Lucy did Pacific Blacktail once, but she made it sound, like, nasty.
- 5:21Speaker 6: And then there was the.
- 5:22Speaker 8: That's Lucy.
- 5:23Speaker 6: What's the Himalayan Yak Scat?
- 5:25Speaker 8: That's just you. You made that up because you're kind
- 5:28Speaker 8: of creepy.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:30Speaker 6: I don't even remember the original coffee that.
- 5:32Speaker 3: The best part of waking up is yak scallops in
- 5:35Speaker 3: your cup.
- 5:36Speaker 8: Yeah, that's really an insult because it came from me.
- 5:38Speaker 6: Of all people to call me creepy.
- 5:40Speaker 8: That's right.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Take that.
- 5:41Speaker 12: Was it Oregon breakfast? Is that what it was?
- 5:43Speaker 2: No.
- 5:45Speaker 6: All right.
- 5:45Speaker 8: So, it's been a while since several of the people
- 5:49Speaker 8: here have actually been on board. So, I figured we
- 5:52Speaker 8: probably just ought to let loose the Titans and just
- 5:55Speaker 8: let people tell what's been going on for them. And
- 5:57Speaker 8: that will probably take over the entire show. So... Do
- 6:01Speaker 8: you want me to get mine out of the way
- 6:02Speaker 8: and then let you go? Sure. Okay. Well, I've got
- 6:06Speaker 8: two things I was going to mention. Then I've got
- 6:08Speaker 8: a movie I can come back to if we haven't, like,
- 6:10Speaker 8: I don't want to take up all the time since
- 6:11Speaker 8: I've actually been here recently. So, number one, this one,
- 6:18Speaker 8: and I just thought it was a funny story because
- 6:21Speaker 8: much as we try to do on this show, it
- 6:23Speaker 8: sort of has, like, show the ways that the movie
- 6:26Speaker 8: world seeps into our real lives and vice versa. And
- 6:29Speaker 8: it's sort of the opposite of what we were just
- 6:31Speaker 8: doing last week. Last week, how we were casting the
- 6:33Speaker 8: movie of this podcast. I recently sort of did that
- 6:37Speaker 8: in reverse. So this will be fun because it's a
- 6:39Speaker 8: work story. So I'm at work with a certain co-worker.
- 6:44Speaker 8: And there's this chick who works here that she decided
- 6:47Speaker 8: was a mean girl. And from that, we decided that
- 6:51Speaker 8: our situation was very similar to mean girls. So then
- 6:55Speaker 8: we started casting real life around that. So the mean
- 7:01Speaker 8: girl in question was obviously the Regina George.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I know who you are.
- 7:05Speaker 8: Wait, wait. That's where I'm going. Then she's got a
- 7:08Speaker 8: pseudo-Tody that we decided is sort of a mixture between
- 7:12Speaker 8: Seafree and Chalbert. She's kind of like both in her
- 7:14Speaker 8: own weird way. There's another one who could be the
- 7:18Speaker 8: low hand of the story. She sort of was innocent
- 7:21Speaker 8: when she came in, and then working around us, we totally...
- 7:24Speaker 8: Just beat that out of her. So, you know, it
- 7:26Speaker 8: comes around just like in the movie. But this was
- 7:28Speaker 8: my favorite part, was midway into this, I was like,
- 7:31Speaker 8: so if we're following suit, I guess that makes me
- 7:34Speaker 8: the Janice Ian of this world. And my favorite part
- 7:38Speaker 8: is she just sort of laughed and agreed. There was
- 7:40Speaker 8: no questioning that I was obviously the Janice Ian.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 7:44Speaker 8: I don't know. I just thought that was funny. I
- 7:46Speaker 8: am the Janice Ian of this world.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Lizzie Kaplan is babe, so.
- 7:50Speaker 8: I'm not going to argue that because Lizzie Kaplan's hot.
- 7:52Speaker 8: Which one is she? The reject.
- 7:55Speaker 3: The reject, oh.
- 7:57Speaker 8: The square peg, if ever there was one.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Wasn't she in that show, The Pits? Yes.
- 8:04Speaker 8: One of my favorite, maybe you'll get six episodes on
- 8:08Speaker 8: Fox shows. They canceled that real fast. Not that Fox
- 8:12Speaker 8: ever does that with a show.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Right.
- 8:15Speaker 8: So the only other thing that, again, these are sort
- 8:18Speaker 8: of like side movie related, but this one, just to
- 8:22Speaker 8: point out, If other people weren't aware of this, I
- 8:24Speaker 8: felt it was my geek duty to get out there
- 8:27Speaker 8: and make sure everybody's aware of the new series of Legos.
- 8:31Speaker 8: Have you seen the Monster Fighters?
- 8:32Speaker 1: I have.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Yes.
- 8:33Speaker 1: They're awesome.
- 8:35Speaker 8: Thank you. I can't fight it. It's ridiculous. So if
- 8:40Speaker 8: you're a super geek and you like Legos, if you're
- 8:43Speaker 8: a super geek and you like monsters, or any mixture
- 8:45Speaker 8: of the two. So, yeah, basically they're doing classic movie
- 8:49Speaker 8: monsters in Lego form. And they're hitting all. I mean,
- 8:53Speaker 8: there's a werewolf. There's a Dracula. There's a Frankenstein lab.
- 8:58Speaker 8: I'm still waiting. The big money is somewhere down the line.
- 9:01Speaker 8: In the next month or so, they're coming out with
- 9:02Speaker 8: a full haunted house.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the haunted house is astounding looking.
- 9:06Speaker 5: It's probably going to be like $.
- 9:07Speaker 6: 500, though. I don't think.
- 9:08Speaker 8: It's that much.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Legos are expensive. Legos are expensive.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Probably pound for pound, it's more than gold.
- 9:16Speaker 8: Probably, since there's no real weight to them. And they
- 9:19Speaker 8: cost a damn fortune. So if nothing else, people should
- 9:22Speaker 8: save money.
- 9:22Speaker 2: They've also done the Lord of the Rings ones, too,
- 9:25Speaker 2: that have just come out, which, you know, some of
- 9:27Speaker 2: those are admittedly kind of cool, too. I mean, I
- 9:30Speaker 2: got some of the monster ones and some of the
- 9:32Speaker 2: Lord of the Rings ones, and I hadn't bought Legos
- 9:34Speaker 2: in years. But I was like, you know, for the
- 9:36Speaker 2: surgery that I'm going to have, I know I'm going
- 9:38Speaker 2: to be doped up afterwards. And that's seriously how I spent, like,
- 9:41Speaker 2: the first couple of days coming out of anesthesia was
- 9:43Speaker 2: just building Legos with this very childlike, you know, just
- 9:48Speaker 2: awe of what I was constructing and watching movies and
- 9:52Speaker 2: then suddenly like it's mid-August.
- 9:55Speaker 5: It's a good time.
- 9:56Speaker 8: So yeah, if nothing else, I thought I'd make sure
- 10:00Speaker 8: everyone was aware. Go out, seek them out. Cause yeah, monsters, Legos,
- 10:04Speaker 8: it's all good mixture there. So, uh, I can come
- 10:07Speaker 8: back if we've got time for a movie, but I'll,
- 10:09Speaker 8: I'll let you guys go at it. So who wants
- 10:11Speaker 8: to be next?
- 10:13Speaker 3: I've been reviewing the sight and sound top 10 revision, uh,
- 10:20Speaker 3: this past week and just kind of reflecting on it. Um,
- 10:23Speaker 3: I didn't know what you guys thought about like the
- 10:26Speaker 3: whole quote unquote controversy of vertigo dethroning citizen Kane, but I,
- 10:31Speaker 3: for one could give a shit. I think both movies
- 10:34Speaker 3: are great. So it's not really like, yeah, it's, it's,
- 10:38Speaker 3: you can't quantify that. So I just, I'm just, I
- 10:40Speaker 3: have been reading these long extensive out, like these critics
- 10:44Speaker 3: who like, I like, they're just, they're outraged. Like how
- 10:47Speaker 3: could you disrespect vertigo? And it's, I don't know, these thousand-word-long...
- 10:53Speaker 3: It doesn't seem worth it. I don't know.
- 10:54Speaker 6: I don't know. Just watch the movie. That's odd.
- 10:57Speaker 12: They both seem like flawed masterpieces to me.
- 11:01Speaker 2: A couple years ago, Empire Magazine did a very, very
- 11:03Speaker 2: cool poll to where they did the top 500 films
- 11:06Speaker 2: of all time.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Did you ever see that?
- 11:08Speaker 2: And the way they did it was they actually sent
- 11:10Speaker 2: out just ballots to... 10,000 of their readers and film
- 11:15Speaker 2: directors and screenwriters and critics all over the world and
- 11:18Speaker 2: just the ballot simply said write down your top 10
- 11:21Speaker 2: favorite movies and that was it and they just took
- 11:23Speaker 2: all these write-in ballots and just totaled them up and
- 11:27Speaker 2: so it's a very eclectic list because I mean you
- 11:32Speaker 2: have like Kurosawa films that are mixed in with like
- 11:34Speaker 2: Dark Knight I mean it's a very offbeat list but
- 11:37Speaker 2: on that one the number one that they had was
- 11:40Speaker 2: The Godfather and I could kind of see that one
- 11:42Speaker 2: as well because Citizen Kane, I think, was in the
- 11:45Speaker 2: 20s on that list.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And to me, like, an eclectic, like, movie list is
- 11:51Speaker 3: the only list worth having. I mean, if you're just
- 11:53Speaker 3: going to have the same old, same old, like, Citizen Kane, Sergers,
- 11:56Speaker 3: 8 1⁄2, like, it's, those movies are awesome, but just,
- 12:01Speaker 3: you know, it doesn't seem to be starting conversation about anything,
- 12:05Speaker 3: I guess.
- 12:05Speaker 2: That's what I thought was kind of cool about that list,
- 12:08Speaker 2: because you were just going out and asking so many
- 12:11Speaker 2: regular people what they thought. It was more of a,
- 12:13Speaker 2: general consensus list versus something that was made by elitist
- 12:17Speaker 2: critics or anything else like that.
- 12:20Speaker 6: I think what you get out of that list is
- 12:22Speaker 6: when you say favorites and not the best, then you
- 12:25Speaker 6: get into people, because if you were told me, if
- 12:31Speaker 6: I were told to list the best 10 films of
- 12:35Speaker 6: all time, I would have to sit down and think,
- 12:37Speaker 6: what would I have to put on this list in
- 12:39Speaker 6: order to be considered valid? by anyone that really cared
- 12:44Speaker 6: to read it. And so I would have to put
- 12:46Speaker 6: five films in that I may not care. I may
- 12:49Speaker 6: consider them a masterpiece, but I may not care whether
- 12:52Speaker 6: or not I ever watch it again. And so therefore,
- 12:54Speaker 6: if it's favorite, it really goes on a personal opinion.
- 12:58Speaker 8: That's a very different list.
- 13:00Speaker 6: I think that's a more pure list.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the exact phrase they had on the
- 13:03Speaker 2: ballot was, list your top ten personal movies, I think
- 13:07Speaker 2: is what it was. So, I mean, it sort of
- 13:09Speaker 2: made it ambiguous as to, is this favorites? Is this
- 13:12Speaker 2: top ten best films I've ever seen, like me personally?
- 13:15Speaker 12: Well, you know, there's no right answer to it.
- 13:20Speaker 13: But in things where there is a right answer, they
- 13:23Speaker 13: say that experts are not as good at coming up
- 13:27Speaker 13: with a right answer as a crowd. If the crowd
- 13:31Speaker 13: is under the right conditions, it's like it can't have,
- 13:35Speaker 13: like a cascade where everybody just says what everybody else says.
- 13:39Speaker 13: Everybody has to be free to voice their opinion, and
- 13:43Speaker 13: it's better if it's diverse. And then, like, if they're
- 13:47Speaker 13: going to guess how many jelly beans are in a jar,
- 13:51Speaker 13: the crowd is always going to come up with a
- 13:53Speaker 13: better answer than experts on jelly beans.
- 13:57Speaker 6: In jars or whatever.
- 13:58Speaker 12: I don't know who would be an expert on that.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Kirsten Dunst and Melancholia, sorry.
- 14:03Speaker 12: Yeah, there's that.
- 14:04Speaker 13: There's that book, The Wisdom of Crowds, and the guy
- 14:07Speaker 13: goes around with this theory, which goes back to Scottish
- 14:11Speaker 13: philosophers or something. But he says every time he tries
- 14:15Speaker 13: to do it live, he thinks it won't work. Like
- 14:19Speaker 13: he tries to have radio call in people, like, guess
- 14:22Speaker 13: how many books are in his study. And every time
- 14:25Speaker 13: it works, the crowd has a better answer than, I
- 14:29Speaker 13: don't know.
- 14:29Speaker 12: Experts on how many books he has.
- 14:31Speaker 8: People that have been to his studies.
- 14:33Speaker 12: I don't know who the experts are in that field.
- 14:36Speaker 2: It also makes sense, though, for doing something like that
- 14:38Speaker 2: for films, because films are designed for a crowd and audience.
- 14:42Speaker 8: Well, I think most of those lists are just made...
- 14:46Speaker 8: For people to fight on the internet. Like anything.
- 14:49Speaker 3: At this point, yes. It's all about fighting on the internet.
- 14:52Speaker 8: They just make their own personal top ten and post
- 14:54Speaker 8: it somewhere so that people will.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Argue with them. That's totally right. I was going to say,
- 14:57Speaker 3: in every single response article I've read, there's always been like, well,
- 15:01Speaker 3: here's what I think. And there's their own top ten.
- 15:04Speaker 3: And I was like, you know what? I think that's
- 15:06Speaker 3: a good thing that it had that reaction. Not like, yes,
- 15:10Speaker 3: I agree. Well done.
- 15:12Speaker 12: Fighting on the internet is fun, man.
- 15:14Speaker 8: It's like a full-time job. But as long as you
- 15:18Speaker 8: don't put any merit behind it, and I think that's
- 15:20Speaker 8: the problem with this list, is they actually act like
- 15:23Speaker 8: it means something. It's a list like everybody else's list.
- 15:27Speaker 8: That's why I don't understand why they need to be numbered.
- 15:29Speaker 8: If you can just group 10 together, because then nobody fights.
- 15:33Speaker 8: I can't believe this was an 11. That's a lot
- 15:35Speaker 8: more rare than, why is this number 1 and this
- 15:37Speaker 8: number 3? Yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 13: Yeah, the whole idea of a winner in the arts
- 15:43Speaker 13: is always ridiculous.
- 15:45Speaker 14: It is.
- 15:47Speaker 3: First place.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Except for the AFI. They believe that theirs is the
- 15:52Speaker 6: holy grail of lists.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 6: The top 100.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I'm not, yeah, I don't agree with AFI.
- 15:57Speaker 2: First, I mean, just the very fact that it's elitist
- 15:59Speaker 2: and it's just American films only.
- 16:01Speaker 8: Right.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 8: That's the way we are.
- 16:04Speaker 3: It can only be American.
- 16:06Speaker 8: Well, that's the thing that's funny about that list is
- 16:08Speaker 8: it's also like it shows you how much things change. Well,
- 16:11Speaker 8: even with the AFI, they change it every 10 years.
- 16:13Speaker 8: But like people hated Vertigo. Like when it came out,
- 16:16Speaker 8: nobody cared about it.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it didn't show up on any list until like
- 16:19Speaker 3: the late 70s or something.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Later than that.
- 16:21Speaker 8: It was like the 90s. It's like when they restored it,
- 16:23Speaker 8: all of a sudden they went, oh, wow, this is
- 16:25Speaker 8: a masterpiece. And like nobody seemed to care before that.
- 16:28Speaker 12: Well, it has problems, you know. It has some issues.
- 16:30Speaker 4: It does.
- 16:31Speaker 3: It is kind of like, I don't want to say bad.
- 16:33Speaker 3: bloated that's the wrong word but it's like.
- 16:36Speaker 12: And fractured it is right it's.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Very fractured and it doesn't like and it hinges.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Largely on coincidence working too that's the other thing and.
- 16:45Speaker 3: It's not yeah sorry it's not like pound for pound
- 16:48Speaker 3: entertaining as like north by north northwest or something.
- 16:51Speaker 13: You know or rear window yes that's pretty solid yeah
- 16:57Speaker 13: yeah that's pretty dapper.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Sorry, I got distracted. He had suspenders on. I'm going
- 17:04Speaker 1: to look.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Sorry, I was waiting for somebody.
- 17:06Speaker 8: As I said, making fun of people out the window.
- 17:09Speaker 8: He smiled at us.
- 17:09Speaker 6: He knew that something was going down.
- 17:11Speaker 8: He smiled at me.
- 17:12Speaker 1: He smiled at me. All the posters for Vertigo say,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you have to watch it from the beginning, but I
- 17:18Speaker 1: really only watched it from the middle to the end.
- 17:20Speaker 12: Damn it.
- 17:21Speaker 8: Hitchcock is talking to you personally.
- 17:24Speaker 4: I know.
- 17:25Speaker 6: This is the same thing.
- 17:27Speaker 12: Why would a movie even bother to tell you You
- 17:29Speaker 12: have to watch it from the beginning.
- 17:31Speaker 6: They did that with Psycho as well. They said, you
- 17:33Speaker 6: have to watch this.
- 17:34Speaker 8: I think it's just, I mean, you know better than anybody,
- 17:37Speaker 8: I guess. Do they just let random people in the
- 17:40Speaker 8: theaters now when it's halfway over? Because it seems like
- 17:42Speaker 8: in the old days, they'd just be, whatever, wander on in.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Speaking, no.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I always tell the staff, right about at the 20-minute mark,
- 17:51Speaker 2: that's stop letting people in.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Because that's about....
- 17:56Speaker 2: The preview is about 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes
- 17:58Speaker 2: into the movie itself, it's like, after that, I'm not
- 18:00Speaker 2: concerned about that person going in and missing what's going on.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I just think it's a distraction to the other people.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Who are already in it.
- 18:07Speaker 8: And you could almost catch up 10 minutes in, but
- 18:10Speaker 8: if you're like, you know, half an hour, what's the
- 18:12Speaker 8: point at that point?
- 18:14Speaker 6: It just depends on what movie it is, too.
- 18:16Speaker 12: If it's Jackass 3D, Vertigo, then no.
- 18:19Speaker 5: It says on the movie.
- 18:25Speaker 8: I think that should be the rule, damn it. If
- 18:26Speaker 8: you can't get there within a reasonable amount of time,
- 18:28Speaker 8: you stay out in the lobby. Wait around for an
- 18:31Speaker 8: hour and a half. You'll be fine.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I'll have to watch it from the beginning.
- 18:34Speaker 8: I would hope so.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I'm not going to diss other competing theaters, but they
- 18:38Speaker 2: do have the bad habit of putting 20 to 30
- 18:41Speaker 2: minutes previews on stuff, and that.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Makes other people.
- 18:45Speaker 2: They assume we do the same.
- 18:46Speaker 5: That's always kind of the.
- 18:47Speaker 6: I've honestly, in some theaters, forgotten what movie I was
- 18:51Speaker 6: going to see during that.
- 18:52Speaker 3: That has happened to me, too. That sounds like a joke,
- 18:55Speaker 3: but no, it gets that bad. You're like, what's about
- 18:58Speaker 3: to start?
- 18:58Speaker 8: Oh, yeah. Seven previews later, you're like, wait, what?
- 19:01Speaker 2: Somebody came in and threw a handful of glitter in
- 19:03Speaker 2: my eyes, and now I'm like, wait, what? But speaking
- 19:08Speaker 2: of Hitchcock and upcoming films, Segway.
- 19:11Speaker 8: Look at that Segway.
- 19:13Speaker 12: I know.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Is there someone on the street?
- 19:15Speaker 2: Has anyone seen the shot of Anthony Hopkins circulating online?
- 19:19Speaker 3: I have, and it's kind of... disturbing in a way.
- 19:24Speaker 3: There's two parts of my brain that don't want to mesh.
- 19:27Speaker 3: It's like Sir Anthony Hopkins and that image of Hitchcock,
- 19:32Speaker 3: and they're two totally different looking people, but in the same...
- 19:36Speaker 3: I don't know. It's weird. Whatever he's going to be in,
- 19:40Speaker 3: I'll watch it and I'll be like, I can't get
- 19:41Speaker 3: used to this.
- 19:42Speaker 13: And I'll have to you know what it's gonna be
- 19:44Speaker 13: like it's gonna be like Nixon and.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Exactly what it's.
- 19:50Speaker 13: Like impression of Nixon that people did that was like
- 19:54Speaker 13: not really anything like Nixon yeah you know when people
- 19:57Speaker 13: started doing Nixon oh or Ed Sullivan is an even
- 20:03Speaker 13: better one like they started doing an impression of Ed
- 20:06Speaker 13: Sullivan and And it had.
- 20:08Speaker 12: Nothing to do with Ed Sullivan. He didn't say that.
- 20:11Speaker 12: He didn't do that. But everybody just accepted it.
- 20:15Speaker 13: Oh, that's a new Ed Sullivan that we have created
- 20:19Speaker 13: who goes around saying a really big show.
- 20:23Speaker 8: As long as everybody knows who it is you're doing,
- 20:25Speaker 8: it works.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:27Speaker 12: So that's what it's going to be. He's going to create.
- 20:30Speaker 12: A Hitchcock that has never existed before.
- 20:34Speaker 8: He didn't go really heavy on the trying to be Nixon.
- 20:38Speaker 8: He just sort of got the makeup on and tried
- 20:40Speaker 8: to do what he wanted. I gave him credit for
- 20:42Speaker 8: not doing a bad impression of him. He just sort
- 20:44Speaker 8: of did his thing. Anthony Hopkins kind of thing.
- 20:47Speaker 2: See, the trick on any of those movies is always
- 20:49Speaker 2: getting beyond the barrier of sitting there and thinking, wow,
- 20:52Speaker 2: Anthony Hopkins is doing a good job doing Hitchcock to
- 20:56Speaker 2: actually just feeling like you're watching Hitchcock. And in those cases,
- 20:59Speaker 2: I would feel almost like it's better to go with
- 21:01Speaker 2: a semi-unknown.
- 21:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 8: It does make it more difficult to get past who
- 21:07Speaker 8: it is.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I feel like Philip Seymour Hoffman's probably the best character actor.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Anytime he plays someone else, I just totally buy it.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I forget that he's not.
- 21:16Speaker 8: There's that weird guy in real life.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Well, Capote, I didn't really know. I had seen him
- 21:22Speaker 3: in other movies before that, but I didn't know him
- 21:24Speaker 3: as an actor. That's how I was like, oh, that's
- 21:26Speaker 3: who Capote... I haven't seen that much footage of him
- 21:30Speaker 3: in real life or anything.
- 21:31Speaker 9: I met him.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Really?
- 21:34Speaker 1: Wow.
- 21:35Speaker 12: There's a story there.
- 21:38Speaker 13: I rode to one of his talks, and for some reason,
- 21:40Speaker 13: my parents put me in the back seat with him.
- 21:45Speaker 14: All right.
- 21:45Speaker 8: Continue on.
- 21:47Speaker 3: First John Carpenter, let's just leave you with these just
- 21:49Speaker 3: obscure celebrities.
- 21:49Speaker 5: He put his hand on my thigh.
- 21:51Speaker 8: Really weird.
- 21:53Speaker 13: He went and gave this talk, and he told a story,
- 21:56Speaker 13: like the moral quandary of a guy who's out on
- 21:58Speaker 13: a date, and he's bouncing a ball. And he bounces
- 22:02Speaker 13: the ball out the window and the dog jumps after it.
- 22:05Speaker 13: And so what does he do? Does he tell the
- 22:07Speaker 13: woman when she comes back in the room that your
- 22:09Speaker 13: dog just leapt to his death? Or does he go
- 22:13Speaker 13: out on the date and then later go, oh, Ann,
- 22:16Speaker 13: by the way.
- 22:17Speaker 12: And I thought he was a comedian. You know, the
- 22:21Speaker 12: whole night he was hilarious and I just thought he
- 22:23Speaker 12: was a comedian.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Who's that weird guy we went to?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 13: Philip Seymour Hoffman. I don't buy him as himself. That
- 22:34Speaker 13: always seems affected. I would get somebody else to play
- 22:38Speaker 13: Philip Seymour Hoffman.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I do want to see the master though. I mean,
- 22:42Speaker 2: that looks like it's going to be pretty intriguing.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Yeah. I, I, I think that's going to be, I
- 22:49Speaker 6: still have, I don't know. Phoenix is, uh, I don't
- 22:53Speaker 6: know something about him after the whole, I'm still here thing. Uh, right. I,
- 23:00Speaker 6: I can't hardly look at him anymore. I tried to
- 23:02Speaker 6: watch that movie. I got most of the way through it.
- 23:06Speaker 6: And I became physically ill with him, I think. I
- 23:10Speaker 6: don't know.
- 23:11Speaker 1: That pretty much killed his career.
- 23:12Speaker 6: I think so. And so maybe this is, I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 6: what a great director. Yeah, what a great director to
- 23:18Speaker 6: start back up with.
- 23:19Speaker 3: The way they're building this movie up, it's, I mean,
- 23:23Speaker 3: they're just like, Oscar, Oscar. Like, just great director, you know,
- 23:27Speaker 3: has all the actors. It's going to be good.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Which is funny because for the better part, I mean,
- 23:32Speaker 2: he was overlooked quite a bit until There Will Be Blood. Because,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I mean, Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights and Magnolia,
- 23:40Speaker 2: they did receive acclaim, but all three of them I
- 23:42Speaker 2: felt like developed more of a following after they came out,
- 23:46Speaker 2: more of an appreciation afterwards versus at the time.
- 23:50Speaker 3: That's true.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Well, Punch Drunk Love, I think, was hindered by Adam Sandler.
- 23:55Speaker 6: There's a lot of perception that goes along with him.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Well, I think that was the whole problem with that
- 24:00Speaker 2: movie is you have two camps. You have the camp
- 24:02Speaker 2: that love Adam Sandler movies, and they went in to
- 24:04Speaker 2: see that, and it's not the typical Adam Sandler movie.
- 24:07Speaker 2: And then there's the camp that doesn't like Adam Sandler
- 24:09Speaker 2: movies that didn't want to go see it because he
- 24:11Speaker 2: was in it. But for me, I feel like it's
- 24:13Speaker 2: actually a really good performance for him because, I mean,
- 24:16Speaker 2: I've seen very few of his comedies because I don't
- 24:18Speaker 2: find him that funny.
- 24:19Speaker 5: And when I was watching.
- 24:20Speaker 2: That movie and the more I've seen it, I feel
- 24:21Speaker 2: like okay, that character that he's playing in Punch Drunk Love,
- 24:25Speaker 2: it's like, what if you took the typical Adam Sandler
- 24:27Speaker 2: character from all of his other comedies and dropped him
- 24:30Speaker 2: in the real world? And suddenly you realize.
- 24:32Speaker 5: That he's very pathetic.
- 24:34Speaker 3: It's not as funny. Yeah, it is sad.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very sad.
- 24:37Speaker 3: People are like, what's wrong with you, man?
- 24:40Speaker 6: And any time you put a Louise Guzman in a movie,
- 24:42Speaker 6: it's a great movie. That's my other take on it. Yeah, no,
- 24:48Speaker 6: I am looking forward to The Master. I think that's
- 24:50Speaker 6: probably one of the ones of this year that I'm
- 24:54Speaker 6: looking forward to the most.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Samsara is the other big one I'm looking forward to
- 24:57Speaker 2: because I think that's just going to look gorgeous on
- 25:00Speaker 2: the big screen.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Well, I just was going to add that the sight
- 25:04Speaker 3: and sound, it's interesting about the sight and sound, like
- 25:07Speaker 3: top ten, is that I thought that people would be
- 25:10Speaker 3: surprised by how much silent movie love that this particular
- 25:14Speaker 3: list had.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 3: And I thought that would be talked about, but instead, no,
- 25:17Speaker 3: it's just the old, age-old, Citizen Kane is better than Burton.
- 25:20Speaker 3: I was like, I've heard this before. I think it's interesting.
- 25:23Speaker 3: They had Passionate Joan of Arc and Sunrise and Man
- 25:26Speaker 3: with a Movie Camera. I'm like, wow, those are interesting choices.
- 25:32Speaker 3: That should be talked about.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I almost feel like, to an extent, they dethroned Citizen
- 25:35Speaker 2: Kane so people would pay attention to it.
- 25:39Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:41Speaker 2: It's like, oh, controversy, look at our list.
- 25:44Speaker 13: Yeah, that's like Bernard Shaw said when he started writing
- 25:47Speaker 13: about Shakespeare and he made fun of Shakespeare and belittled
- 25:52Speaker 13: Shakespeare and compared himself favorably to Shakespeare. But he said
- 25:56Speaker 13: when he started writing about Shakespeare, everybody in England went
- 26:00Speaker 13: to see Shakespeare maybe once a year to say they did.
- 26:03Speaker 13: But when he finished writing about him, everybody was going.
- 26:06Speaker 2: To Shakespeare all the time.
- 26:09Speaker 12: Because he stirred up interest in it. So I don't know.
- 26:13Speaker 12: Maybe it's like that.
- 26:14Speaker 8: It obviously worked because everybody's heard that going on.
- 26:20Speaker 1: I think in the last month we've all seen, if
- 26:24Speaker 1: you're just constantly talking about something, people are like, oh, yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 1: You know, like with the whole Chick-fil-A thing, regardless of
- 26:31Speaker 1: people's opinions on Chick-fil-A, they're like, oh, yeah, Chick-fil-A, that
- 26:34Speaker 1: actually sounds kind of good.
- 26:36Speaker 8: See, yeah, that's what I was... Yeah, on that one,
- 26:38Speaker 8: I'm like, good or bad, that's probably more press than
- 26:41Speaker 8: they've ever had.
- 26:41Speaker 3: You know there's going to be some kind of documentary
- 26:43Speaker 3: about this coming out. Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 1: I mean, you know, like, you can talk about how
- 26:48Speaker 1: disgusting something is or how bad it is or... anything,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and you're talking about it, and people are going to
- 26:56Speaker 1: be like, oh, yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, if you keep saying you never go ass-to-mouth,
- 27:01Speaker 13: pretty soon people are going to be going ass-to-mouth.
- 27:03Speaker 5: It's going to become a thing, isn't it?
- 27:06Speaker 1: I've got to see what this is about.
- 27:07Speaker 8: You know what I keep hearing about.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Welcome to the show, Aaron.
- 27:10Speaker 8: Yes. This is how we roll. So, do we want
- 27:15Speaker 8: to move on? On that note, would you like to
- 27:18Speaker 8: throw yours out?
- 27:18Speaker 6: My mom's not listening now.
- 27:20Speaker 3: My movie, I was going to say my... Geeking out
- 27:23Speaker 3: was really boring this time. It's like, the sight and
- 27:25Speaker 3: sound was not the... Usually I have something more excited
- 27:30Speaker 3: to rant about.
- 27:31Speaker 12: Yeah, I was going to defer entirely.
- 27:33Speaker 13: I've been watching Breaking Bad one after another.
- 27:37Speaker 8: So you listen to them.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I'm missing out.
- 27:40Speaker 12: I do enjoy it, but I don't know if I
- 27:42Speaker 12: would rank it up there with the.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Sopranos?
- 27:47Speaker 13: With the Sopranos or The Wire or even Deadwood.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I'd It's very plot-driven.
- 27:53Speaker 13: I'm not sure I quite agree about the quality of
- 27:57Speaker 13: the acting and writing all the time. Sometimes it feels
- 28:02Speaker 13: a little bit like they only have time to do
- 28:07Speaker 13: so much.
- 28:09Speaker 6: Right.
- 28:09Speaker 3: You're reminded it's a TV show.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 3: It has that formula.
- 28:13Speaker 12: Yeah, sometimes it feels like, you know, it's still TV.
- 28:15Speaker 3: That's the thing about Sopranos. There's no, I mean, maybe,
- 28:18Speaker 3: that could be, you could make an argument that that's
- 28:20Speaker 3: all due to commercials, really. That you have to structure
- 28:22Speaker 3: it around a commercial break and a cliffhanger. And Sopranos
- 28:25Speaker 3: didn't have to worry about that. So there wasn't like,
- 28:27Speaker 3: like in Lost, like, we're going to blow up the hatch.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Boom.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Like that kind of deal. You didn't have to worry
- 28:33Speaker 3: about that kind of stuff.
- 28:34Speaker 13: I remember seeing like footage of them rehearsing a scene
- 28:37Speaker 13: for the Sopranos and it looked like such crap.
- 28:41Speaker 12: Like really?
- 28:42Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 28:43Speaker 12: And it's like, well, how do they shoot it?
- 28:45Speaker 13: So it always looks good and it's intriguing and, and
- 28:49Speaker 13: you know, it's always like picking out like the stuff
- 28:53Speaker 13: you want to see.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:54Speaker 13: Because like just from another camera there when like, I
- 28:58Speaker 13: don't know, Meadow wrecks her car or something.
- 29:01Speaker 12: This looks like some crappy TV show.
- 29:03Speaker 8: Yeah. I don't know.
- 29:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 13: I guess they just really work that hard to make
- 29:10Speaker 13: sure that what comes before our faces is exactly what's
- 29:16Speaker 13: going to keep our interest.
- 29:17Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 29:19Speaker 6: I've been watching a lot of Breaking Bad, too. It
- 29:22Speaker 6: was just now released last season, so I can watch
- 29:26Speaker 6: it because I won't pay for cable. And it's almost
- 29:32Speaker 6: starting to feel just redundant. Like, we're not really progressing anything.
- 29:36Speaker 6: We're just going to, oh, I know where this entire
- 29:39Speaker 6: season's going. I can probably tell you how they're plotting
- 29:41Speaker 6: it out.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Like they're stretching it out.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Yeah. And I keep, you know, there's a certain amount
- 29:47Speaker 6: of suspension of disbelief that you can have with a show.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And maybe when you're watching it all compressed like I do,
- 29:56Speaker 6: so I don't have to wait a week or two
- 29:58Speaker 6: weeks to see it, But you're like, there's no way
- 30:02Speaker 6: that any of these people would let this guy live.
- 30:04Speaker 6: There's no way that, you know, it just seems like it,
- 30:08Speaker 6: I don't know. And, yeah, there are maybe two or
- 30:11Speaker 6: three actors on this show that I am impressed with
- 30:14Speaker 6: their abilities. The rest, I'm like, eh, it could be
- 30:17Speaker 6: a soap opera.
- 30:18Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 12: Well, that guy Tuco, he was a horrible actor. I'm
- 30:23Speaker 12: glad he died.
- 30:24Speaker 8: Hey, some people have it.
- 30:26Speaker 3: He was a terrible actor. Was he the one with
- 30:29Speaker 3: the accent and he was real stoic?
- 30:31Speaker 13: He was the guy with the grill early on. He
- 30:35Speaker 13: was like their first distributor guy.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:39Speaker 8: Some shows just aren't made to be watched. I mean, again,
- 30:42Speaker 8: it goes back to the way they used to run
- 30:44Speaker 8: shows when there was no other option. You had to
- 30:46Speaker 8: wait until next week so they could structure them however
- 30:48Speaker 8: they wanted. But now that you've got that option of
- 30:50Speaker 8: just streamlining it, running them all together, I think there
- 30:54Speaker 8: are shows that suffer from that. And you start to see...
- 30:57Speaker 8: Because I know I heard somebody make this, if you
- 31:00Speaker 8: watch House on a through line for the whole season,
- 31:03Speaker 8: it's the same show every week. It's the same situation.
- 31:07Speaker 8: It's the same structure that they have in every episode.
- 31:10Speaker 8: And from week to week, you don't really notice that much.
- 31:12Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, it's familiar, but it's like, if you
- 31:15Speaker 8: sit there and watch four of them in a row,
- 31:16Speaker 8: you're like, why did I just watch these four shows?
- 31:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 31:19Speaker 8: There are some that are so structure-oriented, like any procedural
- 31:24Speaker 8: kind of thing. I think those will suffer. If it's
- 31:26Speaker 8: a big, arcing storyline, I don't think it hurts it
- 31:29Speaker 8: so much. But there's some stuff that's still made to
- 31:31Speaker 8: be watched like it's in the 50s. See you next week,
- 31:34Speaker 8: we'll be here. I think it's just the new media
- 31:39Speaker 8: kind of thing.
- 31:40Speaker 13: In a way, I think it's the thematic elements. I
- 31:44Speaker 13: love Deadwood, but what it's really interested in It's just
- 31:49Speaker 13: how these random self-interested scum of the earth people begin
- 31:54Speaker 13: to form like a society and begin to even like
- 32:00Speaker 13: hating each other. They build a kind of community. And
- 32:04Speaker 13: I think that's got a shelf life. I mean, eventually,
- 32:08Speaker 13: it's not really the same show.
- 32:10Speaker 12: I hate to say it. It may be for the
- 32:13Speaker 12: best that it didn't keep rolling on because... After a while,
- 32:17Speaker 12: it's not really the same thing.
- 32:19Speaker 8: I think most shows have a limited run. I mean,
- 32:23Speaker 8: once you go past four or five years, it's like
- 32:25Speaker 8: you really need to reevaluate.
- 32:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 12: Yeah, but Sopranos was just.
- 32:31Speaker 6: I thought.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that was amazing how long they went.
- 32:34Speaker 13: Late in the game, and then they'd still be just
- 32:37Speaker 13: right on the heart of the show.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Yeah, they never felt like... Nothing felt stretched out, and
- 32:42Speaker 3: it never felt like a conscious writer's like, oh, we
- 32:44Speaker 3: have to keep this going forever. like it was just
- 32:47Speaker 3: it was just the characters like you were just watching
- 32:49Speaker 3: the characters in this like like free fall in real
- 32:53Speaker 3: time just yeah I don't know it was they just
- 32:56Speaker 3: did it really well uh.
- 32:58Speaker 12: Yeah yeah I might go back and watch that all.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Over again yeah well I had one of my most
- 33:05Speaker 2: pleasurable movie experiences in a long time not too long
- 33:09Speaker 2: ago wait I thought we weren't supposed to talk about
- 33:10Speaker 2: those kind of movies no it wasn't like a Fred
- 33:13Speaker 2: Willard sort of pleasurable movie experience uh But, I mean,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead before I even say the
- 33:20Speaker 2: title of the movie, because I realize it will probably, like,
- 33:24Speaker 2: you know, come under fire. I'll preface it with saying
- 33:27Speaker 2: it was the first film I watched post-surgery, so the
- 33:30Speaker 2: anesthetic was still wearing off.
- 33:33Speaker 8: I don't think we outed you on last episode, so
- 33:36Speaker 8: if you need to give people, you know, the fact
- 33:38Speaker 8: that you were just having surgery done.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I just had knee surgery because I was rock climbing,
- 33:43Speaker 2: and my spine... I had a fellow that was about
- 33:46Speaker 2: half my weight who wanted to belay me.
- 33:48Speaker 6: And I said, are you sure that you're heavy enough
- 33:51Speaker 6: to do that?
- 33:52Speaker 5: And he's like, I've got upper body strength. I was like,
- 33:55Speaker 5: all right. It didn't work out too well.
- 34:01Speaker 2: But anyway, it was the first post-surgery film I was watching.
- 34:05Speaker 2: And as I was watching it, I just had tears
- 34:09Speaker 2: in my eyes thinking, I'm like, God, this is so beautiful.
- 34:12Speaker 3: I was just completely.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Awestruck by it. And I didn't even remember how much
- 34:16Speaker 2: I was even taken aback by it until the next morning.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I got all these texts from friends. I was doing
- 34:20Speaker 2: a constant text update about the film. I was just like,
- 34:24Speaker 2: this movie is blowing my mind.
- 34:26Speaker 6: It is just.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Why is our world no longer like this?
- 34:31Speaker 8: People should not be allowed to text or tweet while
- 34:34Speaker 8: drugged up.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And the film that I'm referring to is Saturday Night Fever.
- 34:39Speaker 6: Of course.
- 34:41Speaker 13: Wow.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I was hoping you'd say Porky's or something.
- 34:44Speaker 8: I was hoping it was an earnest movie.
- 34:45Speaker 12: That really was kind of a good movie in a way.
- 34:48Speaker 2: I remember just like during the whole disco sequences, I mean,
- 34:51Speaker 2: I sent out texts to friends that said, the text
- 34:53Speaker 2: was like, you know, it's blowing my mind watching John
- 34:57Speaker 2: Travolta dance. Why did this die? Why is this not
- 35:01Speaker 2: in our society anymore? And it's just, I sent it
- 35:03Speaker 2: out to like blanket 20.
- 35:04Speaker 8: 30 people. And they were like, what the hell is
- 35:07Speaker 8: wrong with you? Oh, medication.
- 35:09Speaker 13: But it was like, you know, they were, what town
- 35:12Speaker 13: was that set in? It was like a little industrial town.
- 35:15Speaker 13: It was dying and nobody had any money or any future.
- 35:18Speaker 13: And then they'd put on their big suits with the
- 35:20Speaker 13: big lapels and go out and dance.
- 35:23Speaker 5: I mean, it was almost like Rebel Without a Cause,
- 35:25Speaker 5: but with disco.
- 35:26Speaker 12: Yeah, it was, kind of.
- 35:28Speaker 5: It's funny. And then I re-watched it a few days later.
- 35:31Speaker 2: And I was like, I still stand by it.
- 35:32Speaker 5: I like this movie.
- 35:34Speaker 8: I think it's one of those that gain respect over
- 35:36Speaker 8: the years.
- 35:36Speaker 13: I never saw it when it came out, but then
- 35:38Speaker 13: a friend of mine actually told me, yeah, that was
- 35:40Speaker 13: a really pretty good movie, and I went and saw
- 35:44Speaker 13: it maybe like last year.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 35:47Speaker 13: And then also what's unexpectedly good was Samurai Night Fever.
- 35:53Speaker 3: If you saw John Belushi's masterpiece.
- 35:56Speaker 6: It really was.
- 35:56Speaker 13: Because you could follow the movie and you got the
- 36:00Speaker 13: whole sense of the.
- 36:01Speaker 12: the world they lived in, just from the grunts that
- 36:04Speaker 12: he made as a samurai.
- 36:08Speaker 3: You really did.
- 36:09Speaker 12: It kind of worked. It said everything you needed to
- 36:15Speaker 12: know about his world and his life.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Prior to that, it's like I'd never realized how beautiful
- 36:21Speaker 2: the late 70s were.
- 36:22Speaker 8: Because they're usually presented so lovely on TV.
- 36:29Speaker 6: You know, that's the kind of movie... I don't think
- 36:33Speaker 6: I ever saw the original Rocky until I'd seen maybe
- 36:37Speaker 6: Rocky 4. You know, 2, 3, and 4. And I
- 36:41Speaker 6: had this perception of what Rocky 1 was going to
- 36:43Speaker 6: be like, or Rocky. It's completely different. It's completely different.
- 36:48Speaker 6: And you're like, oh, this is a good movie.
- 36:49Speaker 3: It's like a real movie.
- 36:50Speaker 12: Before it became a franchise.
- 36:52Speaker 5: It was an actual movie.
- 36:54Speaker 6: It was completely... It was almost the difference between... Halloween
- 36:58Speaker 6: 1 and 2 and Halloween 3.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Or even the.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Rambo movies too, comparing any of them to First Blood.
- 37:03Speaker 6: To the First Blood, right. And going back and watching,
- 37:08Speaker 6: basically the difference in watching Rocky as an adult, you're like,
- 37:12Speaker 6: this is a really well shot and well written movie.
- 37:18Speaker 6: It just wouldn't even have to be about boxing, is
- 37:23Speaker 6: the other.
- 37:23Speaker 5: Part of it.
- 37:23Speaker 6: It could be about anything and it would still work. Well,
- 37:27Speaker 6: maybe not anything.
- 37:29Speaker 12: Except maybe playing upright bass. I don't think you can
- 37:33Speaker 12: do it.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Right when you said that, he like, okay, I thought
- 37:37Speaker 3: he was getting off. He's like, I'm done.
- 37:39Speaker 8: They won't quit talking about it.
- 37:40Speaker 3: I will play bass no more forever.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Ryan's just wishing we would actually pay attention to the show.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Since we're talking about it.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Going back to 70s, late 70s movies and like that
- 37:49Speaker 3: grimy just look.
- 37:52Speaker 6: It's the feel of Taxi Driver.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Yeah, even the great ones, like just kind of like
- 37:56Speaker 3: you'll never, like I will never say, as much as
- 37:59Speaker 3: I love those movies, I will never say, wow, that,
- 38:01Speaker 3: Sidney Lumet movie felt like a painting. It was just...
- 38:05Speaker 3: It's not... They just all had that kind of garbage, pale,
- 38:10Speaker 3: I don't know what.
- 38:11Speaker 13: See, when I saw American Beauty, I had read a
- 38:13Speaker 13: review of it and about what a different kind of
- 38:16Speaker 13: movie it was, and then they mentioned.
- 38:19Speaker 12: The bag blowing... And I was so disappointed when I
- 38:22Speaker 12: saw it because I wanted.
- 38:24Speaker 3: It to be trash.
- 38:26Speaker 13: I wanted it to be garbage, and for him to
- 38:28Speaker 13: see that that was somehow... like the 70s, right?
- 38:34Speaker 3: That would have been more devastating, like an emotional of
- 38:36Speaker 3: a moment to him just realized, no, that's it. There's
- 38:39Speaker 3: nothing to it. There's no hope.
- 38:42Speaker 13: I don't know. The review gave me the impression of
- 38:47Speaker 13: such a great movie that I was really disappointed when
- 38:51Speaker 13: I saw it because it's like, no, that Well, you know,
- 38:54Speaker 13: if you read really well-written reviews, then by the time
- 38:57Speaker 13: you see the movie, it's like.
- 38:59Speaker 12: Oh, yeah, I remember that.
- 39:00Speaker 9: I enjoyed it.
- 39:01Speaker 12: Then you go see it, and it's like, oh, this
- 39:03Speaker 12: is a different movie than the impression I had.
- 39:07Speaker 8: That's why I don't... think it's a good idea to
- 39:09Speaker 8: read reviews. Definitely not beforehand.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Especially these days. Critics don't even care about spoiling things anymore.
- 39:17Speaker 8: But even if they don't spoil it, it sets you
- 39:19Speaker 8: up with their impression of what you're going to see
- 39:21Speaker 8: versus just letting you have your own. Then after the fact,
- 39:25Speaker 8: you could read it and be like, well, no, I
- 39:27Speaker 8: think you're wrong here, or I agree with you here, but... yeah,
- 39:30Speaker 8: I think beforehand seems kind of stupid in my opinion.
- 39:33Speaker 6: I don't like reading them after either because I've already
- 39:36Speaker 6: formed my opinion on what I thought and I, how
- 39:38Speaker 6: dare they try to convince me otherwise.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Well, that's the geek thing though.
- 39:41Speaker 3: We like to disagree with you.
- 39:43Speaker 6: I do enjoy disagreeing. I, you know, you speak of
- 39:47Speaker 6: the paper bag, um, plastic bag you're right it was
- 39:52Speaker 6: paper or plastic yeah plastic that was uh be careful
- 39:55Speaker 6: was it not another teen movie that the kid was
- 39:59Speaker 6: filming the the bag floating around and I just remember
- 40:04Speaker 6: um it was back I think I that was on
- 40:06Speaker 6: I was watching we had one of the free channels
- 40:08Speaker 6: or something like that for a while right after I
- 40:11Speaker 6: mean the first kid was born and you know you're
- 40:14Speaker 6: up late with a kid and so there you're trying
- 40:16Speaker 6: to get him to sleep you watch a movie so
- 40:17Speaker 6: I watched not another I think it was not another
- 40:19Speaker 6: teen movie And I knew it was coming on again,
- 40:22Speaker 6: like on the West Coast feed or something like that.
- 40:24Speaker 6: And I was like, I've got to watch that again
- 40:26Speaker 6: just for that little moment. Because it was such a
- 40:29Speaker 6: good job of spoofing that movie.
- 40:33Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 40:33Speaker 6: You saw how... stupid of a moment that was.
- 40:37Speaker 3: That movie just so deserves to get made fun of.
- 40:40Speaker 3: It's just like it's pressing the buttons. It's like you
- 40:44Speaker 3: will think this is cool and interesting and artistic.
- 40:47Speaker 13: Well, I did think it was sort of manipulative like that,
- 40:49Speaker 13: and it's basically the movie that Hollywood has been making
- 40:53Speaker 13: for artistic types over and over since Cuckoo's Nest. It's
- 40:58Speaker 13: like you take a repressed community... You bring in.
- 41:01Speaker 12: A character who's sort of like a wild.
- 41:03Speaker 6: Card, and he liberates.
- 41:05Speaker 12: And they've done that over and over.
- 41:07Speaker 13: They've done that with the asylum and then Dead Poets Society.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Dead Poets Society might be the worst of that.
- 41:17Speaker 12: Even foreign films like Babette's Feast. But there are a
- 41:21Speaker 12: bunch of movies that's like that.
- 41:22Speaker 13: And so in this one, it's like a suburban guy
- 41:25Speaker 13: and a pot dealer. It's basically become a Hollywood formula
- 41:30Speaker 13: film now, and some of them are better than others,
- 41:32Speaker 13: but I'm always aware that, oh, this is the movie
- 41:38Speaker 13: they make for people who think they're different and artsy.
- 41:44Speaker 6: It's also the, you know, what is it, like the
- 41:47Speaker 6: stand-by-me kind of formula, too, where you have the downtrodden
- 41:51Speaker 6: school and Morgan Freeman comes in.
- 41:53Speaker 7: And, Ah.
- 41:54Speaker 6: Wakes them up.
- 41:55Speaker 5: It goes all the way back to, like, Blackboard Jungle.
- 41:57Speaker 6: You're right.
- 41:58Speaker 12: The music in you. Let's not stand by me, though.
- 42:00Speaker 8: Lean on me.
- 42:00Speaker 6: Lean on me. Yeah.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Well, you know. Morgan Freeman.
- 42:03Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 42:04Speaker 6: Morgan's in me.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Yeah, Stan by me and Morgan Freeman.
- 42:09Speaker 3: He's the narrator. Him and Richard Dreyfuss took turns.
- 42:13Speaker 8: No, he's the fat kid in Stan by me. He
- 42:15Speaker 8: grew up to be Morgan Freeman.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Can you believe that? And he married the supermodel?
- 42:20Speaker 8: And he married his granddaughter.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Anyway. But it's just like, that movie is just saying, oh,
- 42:29Speaker 3: the suburbs are really weird. Isn't that crazy? I'm... Again,
- 42:33Speaker 3: going back, I'll watch Blue Velvet for that kind of thing.
- 42:36Speaker 3: That movie is awesome.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Speaking of the 70s, haven't they been doing that since
- 42:40Speaker 8: the 70s?
- 42:40Speaker 3: It all goes back to Blue Velvet.
- 42:42Speaker 12: What's-his-name is really good in it, though. Kevin Spacey? Yeah,
- 42:46Speaker 12: and Thora Birch.
- 42:48Speaker 13: She ought to be doing more stuff, I don't know.
- 42:50Speaker 6: I love Thora Birch. Annette Bening does a fantastic job.
- 42:55Speaker 12: Of being gross.
- 42:57Speaker 8: Which is usually what she does.
- 42:59Speaker 6: I can't think of a role she's been in that
- 43:01Speaker 6: I've liked her character.
- 43:02Speaker 12: Yeah, she's hard to like.
- 43:05Speaker 1: She made a really good butch lesbian in that one movie.
- 43:07Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 5: The kids are all right.
- 43:09Speaker 13: Yeah, she was kind of, I guess that's probably her
- 43:11Speaker 13: most likable role. When she got onto the Joni Mitchell thing,
- 43:15Speaker 13: I'm like, I'm right with you.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I didn't actually watch the movie, but I saw a preview,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and I.
- 43:20Speaker 3: Was like, yeah, totally. I can see where she'd be
- 43:23Speaker 3: awesome in this.
- 43:24Speaker 8: All right. The question is, did you watch the preview
- 43:26Speaker 8: from the beginning?
- 43:28Speaker 6: I read a full review.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Of it, and I thought, Like, I know that movie.
- 43:31Speaker 8: I'm on board.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I'm on board, yeah.
- 43:33Speaker 3: I get this movie.
- 43:34Speaker 12: You have to watch it from the middle.
- 43:36Speaker 5: And that is.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Though that also could rope into the suburbs are weird
- 43:41Speaker 2: sort of theme, too, with that movie.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I got the Clips notes.
- 43:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 13: And, you know, Mary Poppins, you have to cut that
- 43:48Speaker 13: off at, like, Feed the Birds.
- 43:51Speaker 12: And then it's just excellent.
- 43:53Speaker 8: If you want to scar your child for life, sure,
- 43:55Speaker 8: go ahead.
- 43:56Speaker 3: That's how I was raised.
- 43:58Speaker 5: It's... I don't know.
- 44:01Speaker 6: Weird experience. Yeah.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Just sad note to end that movie on.
- 44:07Speaker 2: You could cut that movie off where they're lost in
- 44:09Speaker 2: the alleyways and they're picked up by the chimney sweeps.
- 44:11Speaker 5: I mean, that's a real upbeat moment to leave off
- 44:13Speaker 5: as well. Very frightening, actually.
- 44:15Speaker 3: And it's also weird noticing how, like, Dick Van Dyke,
- 44:20Speaker 3: his British accent is horrible in that movie.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Did he ever apologize to the British for that?
- 44:26Speaker 3: He should have. He should have written, like, a giant letter. Oh,
- 44:30Speaker 3: that's great.
- 44:31Speaker 8: Okay, I think that's... We're always looking for a nice theme.
- 44:34Speaker 8: I think we need to have an entire episode of
- 44:36Speaker 8: where we all come up with what would happen if
- 44:39Speaker 8: we ended a movie at this point.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 44:41Speaker 8: And then just do our own cuttings of movies.
- 44:45Speaker 13: Like my daughter was asking the other day, she said,
- 44:48Speaker 13: is there a movie like John Tucker Must Die where
- 44:51Speaker 13: they don't get together and he just dies? That would
- 44:56Speaker 13: be a good movie.
- 44:58Speaker 1: It's called I Know What You Did Last Summer.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Yes. The crying game just ended right, you know, when
- 45:04Speaker 3: he just gets with the woman at the bar and
- 45:06Speaker 3: it's like, oh, this is a nice, you know, he's IRA,
- 45:08Speaker 3: but he gets a second chance. It's nice. Nothing bad
- 45:12Speaker 3: or crazy is going to happen.
- 45:13Speaker 8: This is one of those hookups.
- 45:15Speaker 3: This ended on a good note.
- 45:16Speaker 1: It's like Pootie Tang. Actually, I don't know what Pootie
- 45:20Speaker 1: Tang is.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Your gaffer friends will be like, she was really hot.
- 45:23Speaker 3: I was like, dude, watch the rest of the movie.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Just watch what you say.
- 45:29Speaker 6: I still wonder why Pootie Tang doesn't work, but Black
- 45:33Speaker 6: Dynamite does.
- 45:35Speaker 12: Because Black Dynamite kicks ass.
- 45:38Speaker 6: I know. I still say there's enough in Poodie Tang
- 45:41Speaker 6: that's just as good.
- 45:42Speaker 8: It was entertaining. I don't know about just as good.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
- 45:45Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 45:46Speaker 3: It feels like a really long, short film.
- 45:48Speaker 6: I don't know why.
- 45:50Speaker 3: It just does. It has some crazy moments that are hilarious,
- 45:53Speaker 3: and then it just drags out in these weird stretches
- 45:56Speaker 3: that does not make sense. You can tell a lot
- 45:59Speaker 3: of it was just cut to pieces.
- 46:01Speaker 8: I think the difference is, and we need to get
- 46:04Speaker 8: really analytical about Poodie Tang. I think the difference is that, again,
- 46:09Speaker 8: it almost comes off a little more slapstick-y. It's almost
- 46:13Speaker 8: a little more in the Spartans camp, where Black Dynamite
- 46:16Speaker 8: is almost like legit. I mean, those guys love those movies,
- 46:22Speaker 8: and they're doing a good version of those movies. Now, granted,
- 46:24Speaker 8: at the same time, they know what's silly about them,
- 46:27Speaker 8: and they're kind of tweaking that a little and making
- 46:29Speaker 8: fun of it, but... It just works as an actual
- 46:32Speaker 8: movie where Booty Tank has to be making fun of us.
- 46:35Speaker 2: That's what I think works so well about those films.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Anytime you do a parody, especially if you're doing it
- 46:38Speaker 2: about stuff like that, I mean, you can't have the
- 46:42Speaker 2: characters winking at the audience too much because what's endearing
- 46:46Speaker 2: about those movies is you have these stars who are
- 46:48Speaker 2: just trying their damnedest to do the best of what
- 46:50Speaker 2: they have with the material, even though it's just, you know,
- 46:53Speaker 2: complete crap half the time.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:55Speaker 2: But, you know, you have these people who get up
- 46:56Speaker 2: and they'll make a legitimate attempt to sell the material
- 46:59Speaker 2: and then you go back and you watch it 20,
- 47:00Speaker 2: 30 years later and it's laughable and that's why when you,
- 47:03Speaker 2: anytime I watch parodies, I'm like, this one worked, this
- 47:05Speaker 2: one didn't, is, are the characters trying to sell it?
- 47:08Speaker 2: If they're trying to sell it, I think usually then
- 47:10Speaker 2: it becomes hilarious. But, I mean, if they're, You know,
- 47:13Speaker 2: like all the scary movie stuff. I mean, it's just like, no,
- 47:16Speaker 2: that doesn't work for me because it's just too many
- 47:18Speaker 2: winks at the audience. It's just, I can't, you keep
- 47:20Speaker 2: breaking the fourth wall.
- 47:21Speaker 5: I can't focus.
- 47:22Speaker 3: One movie I thought that did that very well was
- 47:25Speaker 3: Lost Skeleton of Cadavera. Oh, God, I love that.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Any of the Larry Blamire stuff is just gold.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Climb down these rocks like I do. Dangling skeleton going.
- 47:37Speaker 3: I mean, he made the second, did you ever see
- 47:40Speaker 3: the sequel? I saw scenes from the sequel, and they
- 47:42Speaker 3: look just as funny.
- 47:43Speaker 5: Apparently, he's making a third now.
- 47:45Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 47:45Speaker 3: More cartoon. I hope he makes ten.
- 47:50Speaker 6: I don't own that, but I want it just so
- 47:54Speaker 6: that I can say, here, just watch this. Just take it,
- 48:00Speaker 6: watch it. You don't even have to say anything. I
- 48:02Speaker 6: just want to know that you watched it.
- 48:03Speaker 8: Only to the right people.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:05Speaker 8: It wouldn't work forever.
- 48:06Speaker 3: There's just some movies that are so weird and outlandish
- 48:09Speaker 3: that I just want to show them to my friends
- 48:10Speaker 3: who don't care for movies. Just to make them watch.
- 48:14Speaker 3: I made you sit through this weird movie. You can
- 48:17Speaker 3: never get that out of your head. And that just
- 48:19Speaker 3: gives me kind of a weird, sick pleasure. Like showing
- 48:23Speaker 3: people How Sue who just don't care for watching any
- 48:26Speaker 3: kind of movie.
- 48:28Speaker 8: How Sue is so awesome.
- 48:31Speaker 6: It's like dog tooth. You can never not watch that.
- 48:34Speaker 6: Once you've seen it, you've seen it.
- 48:36Speaker 3: That is so true. No, I've seen it.
- 48:38Speaker 12: Or Zardoz.
- 48:39Speaker 5: It goes back to some episodes ago.
- 48:41Speaker 2: It's another one to where it's just get somebody to
- 48:43Speaker 2: watch this and let it blow their mind.
- 48:45Speaker 3: I still think about Zardoz. I might even go as
- 48:49Speaker 3: far as to say I think about it every day.
- 48:51Speaker 8: Every day I wake up. Praise Zardoz. It is another day.
- 48:55Speaker 3: The image of that stone head is just so iconic
- 48:57Speaker 3: and powerful.
- 48:58Speaker 8: It's pretty awesome.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Yes.
- 49:00Speaker 8: I'm telling you. I'm getting one for the backyard.
- 49:03Speaker 6: I can't hear the word tabernacle without laughing. That's for sure.
- 49:07Speaker 8: You automatically go, whoa!
- 49:10Speaker 2: I will not go to the second level with you!
- 49:14Speaker 3: Best part.
- 49:15Speaker 5: Too late to feel sorrow.
- 49:19Speaker 9: Too late to feel pain.
- 49:39Speaker 4: He's just an old boy.
- 49:41Speaker 1: And he's lost out in the rain.
- 49:45Speaker 8: He never caused.
- 49:46Speaker 3: Trouble, so don't have no fear.
- 49:52Speaker 4: He's just an old boy, and he'll soon be far
- 49:56Speaker 4: away from here.
- 49:57Speaker 3: He used to be a family man. Yes, folks, it's
- 50:14Speaker 3: intermission time.
- 50:16Speaker 9: So how about taking a.
- 50:17Speaker 10: Break, get out and stretch a little, and relax before
- 50:20Speaker 10: the show begins again.
- 50:21Speaker 5: Spread the word, you dirty cocksuckers.
- 50:24Speaker 11: Tell all your grave-riding friends what the matter is.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Yeah! Hobo with a shotgun.
- 50:30Speaker 8: The streets gave birth to a stray dog who is
- 50:32Speaker 8: now fed up.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Living on the streets is tough.
- 50:35Speaker 2: And it's about to get tougher.
- 50:40Speaker 12: Violent, cruelty, murder.
- 50:45Speaker 2: The streets will be lonelier because this hobo's taken on.
- 50:48Speaker 2: He's cashing in his nickels and dimes for a new
- 50:51Speaker 2: way of life. But getting out isn't that easy. This
- 51:01Speaker 2: hero is going to have to deliver justice one shell
- 51:05Speaker 2: at a time.
- 51:08Speaker 14: I'm going to sleep in your bloody carcasses tonight.
- 51:18Speaker 5: Hobo with a shotgun he's pissed.
- 51:21Speaker 6: Tell me the god damn pastures and he wants answers
- 51:24Speaker 6: I want that.
- 51:28Speaker 4: Hobo's head on my wall tonight and whoever brings it
- 51:32Speaker 4: to me gets all my friends.
- 51:37Speaker 3: It will only be one.
- 51:42Speaker 10: Law here.
- 51:52Speaker 5: David brought cabs.
- 51:53Speaker 6: Who's taking a car out of the hill?
- 51:55Speaker 3: You're wearing shotguns. Hobo with a shotgun.
- 51:58Speaker 9: Rated R.
- 51:59Speaker 14: Are you tired of film podcasts where the hosts exist
- 52:02Speaker 14: in a constant blissful state of agreement?
- 52:05Speaker 1: I mean, the main characters are two of the dullest
- 52:07Speaker 1: main characters I have ever encountered in any film.
- 52:10Speaker 14: Well, you're in luck. That means you choose a chin-stroker
- 52:13Speaker 14: and punter.
- 52:14Speaker 3: One is an ex-film.
- 52:15Speaker 14: Student with a penchant for David Lynch and art cinema.
- 52:18Speaker 5: The other is a man on the street.
- 52:21Speaker 14: Listen in perplexed and horrified terror as we tear apart
- 52:25Speaker 14: one film a week.
- 52:26Speaker 8: It just really isn't.
- 52:28Speaker 6: It's not visually striking.
- 52:29Speaker 9: No.
- 52:30Speaker 6: Just getting confirmation.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 52:32Speaker 6: That's the third time, though. I mean, is this on?
- 52:34Speaker 14: You can find us at csvsp.libson.com.
- 52:39Speaker 9: So come and share the victory.
- 52:40Speaker 3: If you could fuck any man in film, who would
- 52:43Speaker 3: it be and why?
- 52:45Speaker 6: My answer is Lance Henriksen. He wouldn't tell. He looks
- 52:48Speaker 6: like some.
- 52:50Speaker 6: He looks like somebody you can keep a secret.

- 53:30Speaker 3: Hi, this is Larry Blamire, also known as Dr. Paul Armstrong,
- 53:33Speaker 3: doing science for Movie Meltdown. What's part of your problem?
- 53:40Speaker 8: You know, you haven't seen enough movies.
- 53:41Speaker 10: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now,
- 53:46Speaker 10: on with the show.
- 53:47Speaker 11: There's a voice that keeps.
- 53:50Speaker 2: On calling me.
- 54:02Speaker 7: Down the road, it's where I'll always be.
- 54:07Speaker 14: Every stop I make, I make a new friend.
- 54:11Speaker 3: Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again.
- 54:15Speaker 14: Maybe tomorrow, I'll want.
- 54:17Speaker 10: To settle down.
- 54:19Speaker 7: Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
- 54:24Speaker 4: Down this road that never seems to end.
- 54:28Speaker 3: When you adventure, rise just around the bend.
- 54:32Speaker 12: So if you.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Want to join me for a.
- 54:36Speaker 2: While, just grab your hat and come travel like that's
- 54:39Speaker 2: hobo style.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Is that Joe Rivers?
- 54:44Speaker 8: I should face everyone away from Moira.
- 54:46Speaker 5: What are we going to talk about?
- 54:47Speaker 8: I so wish we had a fucking.
- 54:49Speaker 3: We should just make that like a joke. Like, is
- 54:51Speaker 3: that so-and-so celebrity? And then like a couple seconds later,
- 54:54Speaker 3: someone will just start doing an impersonation of that celebrity
- 54:56Speaker 3: like they just came in and sat down.
- 54:58Speaker 8: Let's not.
- 54:58Speaker 2: But the impersonation is the one at the table that
- 55:01Speaker 2: is worst at it.
- 55:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it has to be just like me. It has
- 55:04Speaker 3: to be awful.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Fred, you're Joan Rivers.
- 55:06Speaker 9: Go.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Hi, I'm Joan Rivers.
- 55:13Speaker 8: That's magic.
- 55:14Speaker 12: I'm going to say some snarky stuff here in a minute.
- 55:16Speaker 8: It's like she's in the room with him.
- 55:18Speaker 6: Can you believe what she's wearing?
- 55:21Speaker 3: I'm doing this.
- 55:22Speaker 8: My daughter creepily looks a lot like me. He's fat.
- 55:27Speaker 1: His dad's just like, don't make faces at those people.
- 55:33Speaker 6: Crazy kid.
- 55:34Speaker 5: Get off my lawn.
- 55:36Speaker 6: He's going to be making fun of geeks later in life,
- 55:38Speaker 6: isn't he?
- 55:39Speaker 8: I think we planted the scene.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Even as a toddler, I was making faces at movie geeks.
- 55:45Speaker 5: He won't even know why.
- 55:46Speaker 2: He'll be like, Dad, I want a microphone. If we
- 55:49Speaker 2: were really movie geeky enough, we would have recreated the
- 55:52Speaker 2: scene from Jaws at that moment, just where we're trying
- 55:55Speaker 2: to do the serious faces with that toddler.
- 55:57Speaker 8: Try to mimic him as he's mimicking us.
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's funny.
- 56:01Speaker 3: I thought maybe you meant drunkenly singing Show Me the
- 56:04Speaker 3: Way to Go Home.
- 56:06Speaker 5: That's how they all end. I've got a bum leg
- 56:08Speaker 5: that I can drink to now. I'm just waiting for
- 56:09Speaker 5: somebody else to do it.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Just to end Jaws on Show Me the Way to
- 56:13Speaker 3: Go Home. It's like, oh, they're drunk.
- 56:15Speaker 8: On this shit.
- 56:18Speaker 3: And they never found the shark. No one died.
- 56:21Speaker 6: It's all good.
- 56:24Speaker 1: They lived happily ever after.
- 56:26Speaker 3: They live on his boat forever and just sing merry tunes.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Props to Piranha, the remake, where they actually had that
- 56:33Speaker 2: sequence at the beginning with Dreyfuss dressed in the hooper
- 56:36Speaker 2: outfit singing Show Me the Road to Go Home while
- 56:38Speaker 2: he's fishing.
- 56:39Speaker 8: Pretty clever on their part for a silly-ass movie. That
- 56:43Speaker 8: was probably the best setup, yeah.
- 56:46Speaker 13: And there was that scene in Chasing Amy where they're
- 56:49Speaker 13: comparing scars they got while having sex.
- 56:52Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 56:53Speaker 8: It was They keep doing that, because that scene's also
- 56:56Speaker 8: in Lethal Weapon 3.
- 56:58Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 56:59Speaker 8: Everybody was obviously inspired by this movie, because they keep
- 57:03Speaker 8: ripping off the scenes.
- 57:05Speaker 13: But, I mean, that is something people do. I mean,
- 57:08Speaker 13: I found that I was comparing scars with a guy
- 57:12Speaker 13: when I was in graduate school, and we have the
- 57:14Speaker 13: exact same scars on our left hands, like every single
- 57:18Speaker 13: one of them.
- 57:18Speaker 12: It was eerie. It was the kind of thing like, Really? No,
- 57:22Speaker 12: let me see it again.
- 57:23Speaker 13: Because that can't be right. You have that scar, that scar,
- 57:27Speaker 13: that scar.
- 57:27Speaker 12: And he had better stories for every one of them
- 57:30Speaker 12: than I did.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 57:32Speaker 8: Well, you have to kill him then.
- 57:33Speaker 12: Because I was like, remember that rubber mold stuff where
- 57:37Speaker 12: you'd make rubber spiders?
- 57:38Speaker 13: Well, it had, like, gunked up, and I was trying
- 57:40Speaker 13: to cut it open with a razor blade, and he
- 57:42Speaker 13: was like, I was peeling potatoes in Latvia.
- 57:45Speaker 10: Okay.
- 57:47Speaker 8: Well, your story sucks. There's no fake spiders in yours
- 57:51Speaker 8: at all.
- 57:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 57:52Speaker 8: Fake spiders wins. So, do we have people who haven't gone?
- 57:58Speaker 12: Speaking of segues.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Well, so when summer started, I thought like, oh, this
- 58:06Speaker 1: is awesome. I'm going to read all these books and stuff.
- 58:07Speaker 1: And I made a list. And what I did instead
- 58:09Speaker 1: was watch six entire seasons of How I Met Your Mother.
- 58:12Speaker 3: A very similar thing happened to me.
- 58:16Speaker 8: I don't know about greatest show ever.
- 58:18Speaker 9: Well, I know.
- 58:19Speaker 8: It's enjoyable occasionally.
- 58:22Speaker 1: I like it. I mean, you get attached to the characters.
- 58:26Speaker 13: How I grew up to be a completely different guy.
- 58:29Speaker 12: Voice over my own life.
- 58:30Speaker 1: How I turned into Bob Saget.
- 58:32Speaker 8: It's a horror movie, but for a solid.
- 58:34Speaker 6: I believe that he's just messing with the kids. I
- 58:37Speaker 6: think it's all just, I'm going to mess with my
- 58:39Speaker 6: own kids. None of this exists. It's like a scene
- 58:42Speaker 6: where I'm not your father and then walk out.
- 58:45Speaker 5: That's what I want it to be.
- 58:49Speaker 1: It's funny and it's not my favorite show ever, but
- 58:51Speaker 1: I got really attached to it because the characters are
- 58:54Speaker 1: just so good. You know, it's like the last episode
- 58:56Speaker 1: I watched, Lily and Marshall are finally having a baby,
- 58:59Speaker 1: and I was just as excited as if one of
- 59:01Speaker 1: my friends was like, we're having a baby! I was
- 59:04Speaker 1: just as excited.
- 59:05Speaker 8: That's kind of sad.
- 59:06Speaker 1: It was really weird. Yeah, it was really sad.
- 59:09Speaker 6: It kind of ruined it. it for me, though, when
- 59:10Speaker 6: someone said that it's basically just this decade's friends.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it totally is.
- 59:15Speaker 8: Pretty much. Bar instead of a coffee shop.
- 59:19Speaker 6: Whatever. Yeah, but instead of coffee, they drink, which is
- 59:22Speaker 6: really how you should handle your problems.
- 59:24Speaker 8: They won't let them do that.
- 59:25Speaker 11: Yes.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Lots and lots of how I met your mother. Uh,
- 59:29Speaker 1: The other day I watched Bottle Rocket for the first time.
- 59:32Speaker 8: Oh, nice.
- 59:33Speaker 12: Yeah, I've got that set out. My kids want to
- 59:35Speaker 12: watch it.
- 59:36Speaker 1: I forgot to return it.
- 59:38Speaker 8: So you own it now?
- 59:39Speaker 3: No, I mean.
- 59:40Speaker 5: The 25-day rule or something.
- 59:42Speaker 1: No, we just got it on Friday. And it's not
- 59:44Speaker 1: my Wild and Holy account anyway.
- 59:45Speaker 3: It's my boyfriend's.
- 59:47Speaker 6: You can't not return it there. That's rude.
- 59:49Speaker 7: Yeah, oh, I know.
- 59:50Speaker 8: We appreciate that.
- 59:51Speaker 1: I'm going to take it to, like, Hiney Brothers.
- 59:53Speaker 8: If it was Redbox, you could go throw it in
- 59:54Speaker 8: the river.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Yeah, well, no, because they charge me, like, $ 19. 00.
- 59:59Speaker 8: But just, you know, for sheer defiance.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I've also been super obsessed with a show called Oddities.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: My friend downloaded it, and we watched it at his house, like,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: marathon back-to-back until, like, the sun comes up. Literally, we
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: will watch the show until the sun comes up, and
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: then we will go get donuts at Nord's at 6
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: when they open, and then I will go home and sleep.
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: Yes.
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: This is quite the life you have put together.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: My summer has been really fun. But no, if you
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: guys haven't seen the Oddities show, I highly recommend it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: It's about these people who own an antique store in
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: New York. People bring in pickled pigs and all kinds
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: of awesome stuff.
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: Things that I want at my house?
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: Things that you have in your house.
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: That's probably true.
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: A reality-based show?
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: It's a reality-based show. It's a real shop in New York.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: And there's one in San Francisco, too. But it's made
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: me realize what I want to do with my life.
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: Oh, there you go. Pickle pigs?
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Yeah, pickle pigs. Pickle things. I do like to pickle things.
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: It's quite a process.
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: Is that hoarders for creepy people?
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: It's hoarders without hoarders.
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: That's bad.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Some funny stuff has probably happened. I can't recall.
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: No moments?
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: It'll come up.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Tons of moments, I'm sure, but.
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: None that I can like. Marlena moments. That's what we're
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: looking for.
- 1:01:26Speaker 12: If you don't record them when they happen, they're just lost.
- 1:01:29Speaker 12: I know.
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: See, you've been slacking.
- 1:01:30Speaker 11: I know.
- 1:01:31Speaker 13: Because, like, you didn't even remember half the ones that
- 1:01:35Speaker 13: we remembered that you told us.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: If I update my Facebook status with something that's really funny,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: that's why I have to because I'll forget.
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: So we need to make notes along the way and
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: be like, oh, she needs to tell us about this.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: You know, I've started, this is really weird. I've started
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: hanging out with my boss a lot, like at work.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Like I'll go to work when I'm not working and
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: just hang out.
- 1:01:54Speaker 8: Weird.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: That's where we hang out. We hang out at work
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: because he's fucking hilarious. Oh, my God. I can't believe
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I never realized how totally hilarious this man is that
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I've known like my entire life.
- 1:02:04Speaker 8: I've heard some weird stories about him.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: Yeah, that's weird.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: But I don't have any particularly awesome things I can
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: think of off the top of my head. Or weird
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: things that have happened to me.
- 1:02:14Speaker 12: Did you ever find out what was going on in
- 1:02:16Speaker 12: your alley?
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: What was the mystery?
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: The hot damn hobo?
- 1:02:21Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: You know, no, but someone did break into my car
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the other day and it's still 45 cents.
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: Gotta buy some hot damn.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I'm not kidding. This really happened like Monday.
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: Nice.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: You actually knew how much change you had in your car.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just in the consoles. It was like
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a quarter of a diamond. Two times.
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: This is math. I don't like it. Too much math. No.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Bad memories. That's why we watch movies.
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: We have no math.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: It may have been like 53 cents or something. I
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: don't know. But, yeah.
- 1:02:50Speaker 8: Nothing else was messed with. Just change.
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: All of her presets are for religious channels now.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: Son of a bitch.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: They stole this necklace that I bought at Forever 21.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: It's like a plastic pearl necklace.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: They have good taste is what you're saying. So if
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: you see a hobo with a pearl necklace.
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: Don't touch it.
- 1:03:10Speaker 8: For the love of God, stay away from it.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I'm going to be able to find that hobo because
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: of that.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: If I see that hobo with a pearl necklace and
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: you ask me for a change, I'd be like, dude,
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: you got 53 cents on you, man. That's enough.
- 1:03:23Speaker 8: You've got enough.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Some guy who was in a wheelchair by a Staffier's
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: on 4th Street tried to get me and Jessica to
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: buy him a piece of pizza because he's like, I'm
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: a Marine! Get a piece of pizza for a Marine!
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: And we're like, no thank you.
- 1:03:38Speaker 12: Maybe if it was sushi.
- 1:03:39Speaker 9: Sushi.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Maybe maybe you were if you were like in the
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: navy yeah there you go you're in the marines no
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: thanks i heard a couple of hobos talking for about
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: 30 minutes outside you know where i work.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: They're sure they were hobos or they weren't bums no
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: they were hobos they had bindles yeah yeah is that.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: What that's called a bindle.
- 1:04:05Speaker 12: Yeah, it's called a bendle.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: I have a new nickname for my friend Ben.
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: Oh, bendle.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: Hi, Ben.
- 1:04:11Speaker 13: But what I found was that hobos like to talk about,
- 1:04:17Speaker 13: they have like, or at least based on this experience,
- 1:04:20Speaker 13: they like to talk about other hobos that they both
- 1:04:23Speaker 13: know and whether they get along with them.
- 1:04:25Speaker 12: That's a good copy. topic of conversation.
- 1:04:28Speaker 13: But they also like to talk about the Hatfields and McCoys.
- 1:04:32Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:04:33Speaker 13: They really do because you don't really have to know
- 1:04:35Speaker 13: much about it. Like once you get the concept that
- 1:04:39Speaker 13: they just hate each other.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: You can sort of talk about.
- 1:04:42Speaker 13: That to all the other hobos. You get the basic
- 1:04:45Speaker 13: idea and you can chat.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: I just thought of another. Yeah. I mean, I've been
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: listening to their conversation about the Hatfields and McCoys is
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: 10 times more entertaining than that TV show that was on.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: like last month.
- 1:04:58Speaker 12: The Hatfields.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Which I couldn't finish.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I did notice a couple weeks ago I was walking
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: my dogs in the front yard. There's a hobo living
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: in my tree.
- 1:05:07Speaker 14: What tree in.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Front of my house there was.
- 1:05:11Speaker 13: Like and a minute ago you couldn't think of any
- 1:05:14Speaker 13: moments that you have a hobo person that they had
- 1:05:19Speaker 13: changed you know.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Like i didn't see the actual hobo but all of
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: his stuff was in the tree there's actually two trees there's.
- 1:05:25Speaker 12: One what bendles hanging in the tree well.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: There's one tree with like a duffel bag and another
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: tree With a pair of shorts and, like, a shirt
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: and some underwear.
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: Well, no, that's where hobos come from.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Because in the fall, they fall down to the ground
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and get covered over by, like, dirt and litter.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: They grow hobos.
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: That's just so the bears don't get in.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: It's a hobo fruit.
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: Yeah, you don't want to pick a hobo until he's ripe.
- 1:05:46Speaker 13: There was an early issue of McSweeney's that's just a
- 1:05:50Speaker 13: list of hobo names that are now available because there
- 1:05:54Speaker 13: aren't so many hobos anymore.
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: And just the list of names is highly entertaining.
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: I bet.
- 1:06:00Speaker 12: Like Gwendolyn the Goose Thief, I think. That's a good
- 1:06:06Speaker 12: hobo name.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I didn't even think that there's a whole different type
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: of naming.
- 1:06:10Speaker 12: Well, there are a lot of nicknames.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: I was going to say, from what I hear, they
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: nickname a lot of... They have weird codes for things
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: that are just so outlandish and imaginative.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: I mean, we give our hobos that walk-in-front-of-work weird nicknames.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: There used to be this guy who had his He
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: had like a headscarf tied around his face like an
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: old-fashioned toothache. And he'd yell at people when they went
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: in the bank. He called him old-time toothache hobo.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I mean, it must not have been that
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: bad of a toothache if he didn't have it tied
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: that tight.
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: Where he could yell at you, though.
- 1:06:39Speaker 8: That's the thing.
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: Welcome to the hobo podcast.
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: Again, since we veered off like we normally do.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: There we go.
- 1:06:46Speaker 8: There's Bronson.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Even this random hobo is telling us different things.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: There's a hobo at Mickey.
- 1:06:52Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:06:53Speaker 8: So while we're on the hobo game.
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: He was telling us to hurry up.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Stop talking about hobos.
- 1:06:59Speaker 8: Stop talking about hobos.
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: He was pointing at his watch.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: He didn't have a watch.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: He was trying to tell us that the hobo train
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: is getting ready to come in. We're letting out all
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: the hobo secrets. They're going to come and charge Nancy's bagel.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: We're going to be late.
- 1:07:13Speaker 12: It's not hard to find here's a thousand hobo names.
- 1:07:16Speaker 12: There's also an ehobo.com.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: They've got their own site.
- 1:07:21Speaker 12: I'm not familiar with that. Let's see. Chisel and his
- 1:07:25Speaker 12: toxic liver. Oh, Terry Tree Climber might be your hobo.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: There you go. Oh, my gosh.
- 1:07:33Speaker 13: Yeah. Gil Bates, inventor of the hobo net. Helga, the
- 1:07:41Speaker 13: bearded lady of Mexico.
- 1:07:43Speaker 12: There are some good.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Half-living optimist Larry.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Misogynist Willie.
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: Oh, they need, they need kids cards just for hobos.
- 1:08:00Speaker 8: Hobo collector cards.
- 1:08:02Speaker 9: Yes.
- 1:08:03Speaker 12: Amadeus, the seminary dropout.
- 1:08:05Speaker 8: I like that.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: There's a serial killer trading cards and Adam's family values
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: that they collect.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: These names are like just stories just untold.
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: If you're that creative, you can't get a job or
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: you can't, maybe they don't want to be.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: You're shaking your head, Brian.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: This is all your fault.
- 1:08:23Speaker 12: You, left it open.
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: You didn't give a strict structure.
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: I believe that was your suggestion.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: Was it my suggestion?
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: I tried to keep it movies, but I fell into
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: the hobo trap.
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: Well, was I still lost.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: In like a Saturday Night Live.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Fever bliss when you asked me this? Because I might
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: have been.
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: Yeah, you usually are the sad thing. That's happened several times,
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: all of which were before the surgery.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: To change the subject from hobos.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Can I at least round it out then?
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: Because I actually meant to tell this and we just
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: haven't done it. one of these episodes.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: You do have a hobo story.
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: I have my hobo story that I thought we could,
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: let's cap it off with this. So, and this one
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: actually ties in to a previous episode. If you were
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: around a long time ago, you'll remember Marlena and Misty
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: discussing the zombie that they saw on the street.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: Who's actually a hobo, by the way. Yeah, no, it doesn't.
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: He loiters around this area, and we've been told to
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: keep him the hell away because he does very indecent
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: things around people and yells at them and bums money
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: and scares them. They stay in their car until he
- 1:09:27Speaker 8: goes away. He's not well-liked around here.
- 1:09:29Speaker 12: He's liked, but he's not well-liked.
- 1:09:35Speaker 8: Did I mention he only has one arm? Anyway... He
- 1:09:38Speaker 8: looks like a zombie and he only has one arm
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: and he shuffles along the street. So one day he
- 1:09:43Speaker 8: comes up and I'm standing there and I'm already just
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: waving him off. Like, dude, just keep going. No, no,
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: I don't have time for your nonsense. I got things
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: to do. And he's trying to get me to like
- 1:09:52Speaker 8: light a cigarette for him. I'm like, yeah, you need
- 1:09:54Speaker 8: one more thing. Let's give you a lung cancer. So
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: I'm just like, no, just get going. And he starts
- 1:09:59Speaker 8: yelling at me and he gives me what I think
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: is possibly the best, name calling i've ever had possibly
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: the best insult but i don't even find it an
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: insult because it's so awesome he's he's kind of rambling
- 1:10:13Speaker 8: in his hobo style you you a bad hitler i
- 1:10:19Speaker 8: was just like i almost immediately said thank you That's
- 1:10:24Speaker 8: the most awesome name anyone has ever called him.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Bad Hitler.
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: As opposed to a good Hitler?
- 1:10:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:32Speaker 8: Somewhere in Switzerland, there's like a good Hitler, the anti-Hitler.
- 1:10:36Speaker 8: I don't know. I'm not sure how this works exactly.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Maybe to make it up to him, like next time
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: he wants you to light a cigarette, why don't you
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: just get two and then light them both? You could
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: recreate the scene from Now Voyager to where you light
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: them both and then just give him one.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: Be real romantic.
- 1:10:50Speaker 10: No.
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: I will continue to be a jackass to him like
- 1:10:53Speaker 8: I always have. Which is why I'm a bad Hitler.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: Well, but see, doesn't that work like a double negative?
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: I mean, it makes you a very good person.
- 1:11:01Speaker 8: Oh, well, I think we all know better than that.
- 1:11:03Speaker 8: So with that, let's cap off the Hobocast. And does
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: anybody have any movies to round this thing out?
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I wanted to mention that I watched The Best Little
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Whorehouse in Texas.
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I just wanted to mention that. I don't have anything
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: else to say.
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: What was your take on it?
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: Tali Parton's boobs are so big.
- 1:11:19Speaker 8: Yeah, but that was back when her face looked real.
- 1:11:22Speaker 8: I miss those days.
- 1:11:23Speaker 12: She's just really small.
- 1:11:26Speaker 8: Well, her waist is.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Her waist wasn't that small in that movie.
- 1:11:29Speaker 8: I know, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: She's like an advertised person.
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: It's like a 15-inch waist. It's not human anymore.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: But she and Burt Reynolds are like a perfect match.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: They're a perfect on-screen match.
- 1:11:40Speaker 8: They're both equally cheesy in that same way.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: I want to get a velvet painting of both of
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: them and hang it side by side in my house.
- 1:11:46Speaker 8: Don't let me see it. Or in your tree.
- 1:11:49Speaker 12: You can hang it in your tree.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: In my tree, yeah.
- 1:11:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Well, after Saturday Night Fever, I kept the buzz going
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: with Across the Universe. I'd never seen that before either.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: And that was a movie that I'd actually... Friends of
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: mine who were fans of Julie Taymor, I mean, they
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: liked Titus and they liked Frida, they were not too
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: happy with that movie. I remember a lot of people
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: just saying they didn't much care for it, so I
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: didn't have my expectations high, but I was like, this
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: is a fun movie.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: I mean, it's one big gimmick.
- 1:12:20Speaker 9: I get it.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: But, I mean, visually, it's awesome, but usually her movies are.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: I mean, I was still kind of curious about The Tempest.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Of course, that was universally panned when it came back
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: out this past year, so I haven't.
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: Seen it yet.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: But, I mean, it was visually just a very stunning film.
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: It was fun.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: I enjoyed it.
- 1:12:40Speaker 12: I thought it was fun.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: I was equally as awestruck by it. Um, It was
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: a good night that night. I have to have surgery
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: more often.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: I had probably the opposite of a geek moment after
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: watching the Red Dawn remake trailer online. And then I
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: felt like just walking over to my kitchen and sticking
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: my head in the oven out of depression. I don't
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: think I finished watching the trailer. I've heard a.
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: Couple people who I expected to hate it say they
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: were okay with it.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Just the remakes. Just stop the remakes.
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: They're not going to.
- 1:13:19Speaker 14: Ever.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: There needs to be protests on the streets. It needs
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: to be that urgent of a situation.
- 1:13:25Speaker 8: It's never going to happen.
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: I still want Weekend at Bernie's 2, but a really
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: dark Weekend at Bernie's.
- 1:13:30Speaker 8: There already is a Weekend at Bernie's 2.
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: I was going to say that. Weekend at Bernie's 3. 3.
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: 3 we could do. I don't know that anybody wants
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: it besides you.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: When they start being silly. Very much corpse-like.
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: I'm sorry, reboot the whole franchise.
- 1:13:45Speaker 13: Bad Meat, the guy who used to edit The Onion,
- 1:13:49Speaker 13: when he left, he tried to go into film, and
- 1:13:51Speaker 13: he wrote a movie called Bad Meat. It's about sort
- 1:13:57Speaker 13: of a body, trying to get rid of a body.
- 1:14:01Speaker 12: He didn't really do that well in the movie industry.
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: Hitchcock already did that anyway, so they're all just kind
- 1:14:08Speaker 8: of ripping him off.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:10Speaker 8: Okay, Erin, do you have anything for us?
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: I watched Base Skitball the other day.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: Oh, that's not right.
- 1:14:18Speaker 8: I take no responsibility for that. But yeah, those guys
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: have become well-respected now, or at least one of the two. So,
- 1:14:25Speaker 8: I mean, they gave them Tonys, for God's sake.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: That movie did?
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: No, but one of the writers now is like a
- 1:14:34Speaker 8: multi-Tony winning writer, so.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: I just recently watched that Six Days to Air, the
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: documentary that they did on making of South Park. I mean,
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: that's pretty crazy that they operate in those conditions. I
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: like sort of the fly-by-night operation they got going after
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: all these years still.
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: Yeah, because they started that way. It was just they're
- 1:14:55Speaker 8: passing a tape around and got themselves a show. For one,
- 1:14:59Speaker 8: it's weird. And then they still were just doing it
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: with cut-out construction paper and Yeah, so it's amazing that
- 1:15:06Speaker 8: it made it at all. And then the fact that
- 1:15:08Speaker 8: how many years now is that?
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: I think it's in 13th?
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: 13th?
- 1:15:11Speaker 8: I think 14th season.
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: We're more than that. I want to say it's like 16th.
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: It's ridiculous.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: It's been on since I was in 6th grade and
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: I am 20.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: I mean, when it first started, it was like, that
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: was still when I was young enough. So it's like
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: there was a set of shows like I was not
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: allowed to watch.
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: And now it's just.
- 1:15:27Speaker 12: Just watch Mary Poppins again.
- 1:15:31Speaker 8: It won't scar you for life.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: My mom always made me watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
- 1:15:34Speaker 13: I don't know why.
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: She made me.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: No, no, I was based on that, too. That was
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: actually my preferred growing up. We had that on VHS,
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: and I remember nothing about the plot. Like, that was
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: before I had a concept of what the Nazis were
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: and what that, and, you know, seeing a bunch of
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: armored knights fighting Nazis. Like, that was just a lot
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: of goofy fun, you know.
- 1:15:55Speaker 8: Like it is.
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: And you know, yeah, I didn't know. It's like, it's weird.
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: Doesn't bother me. I'm bad Hitler.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you're bad Hitler.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: I mean, now I just think about it. It's like,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: it's Nazis. It's witchcraft.
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: I mean, it's Germans.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: It's just, it's a very bizarre movie when you get.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: Right down to it. I just remember that the dad,
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: like the same guy was in both movies.
- 1:16:14Speaker 12: David Tomlinson.
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: Because it's basically ripping off Mary Poppins.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: It was the same studio though, but yeah.
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: But yeah, I just, all I remember is a really
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: creepy black cat that kind of She totes around, and
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: there's a scene where she makes these shoes dance that
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: kind of gave me nightmares. I haven't seen it in
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: a long time.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I remember growing up, actually, my brothers and I, we
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: went over to, we liked that movie so much, we
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: would go over to relatives' houses and do it with
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: their clothes, make them dance around and just leave stuff wherever.
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: We got in trouble for that.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: It made me want to go to Portobello Road. We'll
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: say that.
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: So what was your take on basketball?
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: Sorry about.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: That.
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: Do you want to start your own team?
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Oh, definitely. Whole league.
- 1:17:07Speaker 8: We can see if we can get that going. We
- 1:17:09Speaker 8: can't even get sponsorship for this. I don't know how
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: we're going to get that.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: I did like that it was kind of like a
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: naked gun kind of comedy. kind of stupid like it's
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: it was very the director yeah very hit or yo
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: okay that's that's that would explain it it's really really
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: hit or miss but like the funny parts are just
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: i thought were really funny.
- 1:17:27Speaker 8: They have their moments again it's i mean trey in
- 1:17:30Speaker 8: particular is really kind of smart about the way he
- 1:17:33Speaker 8: does it matt just seems like he got lucky matt
- 1:17:36Speaker 8: just was right in the right place and being the
- 1:17:38Speaker 8: right friend with the right person because trey like everything
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: that he puts together is really smart like even as
- 1:17:45Speaker 8: stupid as some of it is it doesn't seem like
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: it should be that you know well put together and
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: like it's still got this vein of like just being
- 1:17:53Speaker 8: well written yeah having something to say even though it's
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: stupid and their jokes are juvenile.
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: And yeah he proved it by like you know south
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: park bigger longer and uncut like that at the fact
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: that it's as good a movie as it is not
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: just like a TV show on the big screen. It
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: works as a movie. They structured it really well. They
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: wanted it to feel like a movie with a story
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: and the songs were really funny.
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: And just creative. Got one of them nominated for an Oscar.
- 1:18:24Speaker 8: Oscar nominated.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: Then they show up on acid and dresses to the
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Oscars and all these people in tuxes are like, screw you, dude.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: This is my big night.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: And cartoons.
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: Boring Oscars not showing guys in dresses.
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: Nobody with talent is supposed to show up.
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: So any other fun items on your queue?
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Mostly just an Etsy classified school survival guide, as you know.
- 1:18:53Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah. We do occasionally compare notes on that one. Yeah.
- 1:18:58Speaker 8: You have the guide. You have to make your own
- 1:18:59Speaker 8: at home as you watch along and keep track of
- 1:19:02Speaker 8: where you left off. Don't make those mistakes again.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: Also, did anyone see The Dark Knight Rises? Yes. are
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: you all starting to think that like the more you
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: think about bane i don't know if it's just me
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: that he sounded a lot like sean connery yeah i
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: have said that i think everybody's kind of you do
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: it it's not something i noticed as i was watching
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: though it's something that like i had to think about
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: and then i saw sean connery saying something on tv
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: and i was like he's just talking like sean connery
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: you do like i don't have a problem with it
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: or anything but i'm just like i just that's weird
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: i did not notice.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: It now that's what i said right after is you
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: just cup your hands over your mouth and imitate a
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: bad Shankar.
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: That's the great old thing.
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: I mean, it works so perfect.
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: But, you know, he could have done Bronson, and that
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: could have been really creepy as a character.
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: I think it still works creepy.
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: It would have been extremely difficult to hear, though, with
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: the very thick Bronson accent and the mask.
- 1:19:57Speaker 8: I think it works because it's so opposite. Like, it's so, like,
- 1:20:00Speaker 8: calm and almost you know for for this brute he's
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: so like almost upper class.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: He's really intelligent that makes it it makes him scary.
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: It makes it weird yeah it doesn't sit right when
- 1:20:10Speaker 8: you first hear.
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: There's a hint i felt like at some point like
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: i couldn't quite pinpoint i was like okay he has
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: a british accent i'm guessing but at some point like
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: it sounds kind of german but the prison he was
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: apparently born in sorry spoiler alert um spoiler for dot
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: not rises i'm gonna give you know people a couple
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: seconds to okay i'm gonna continue And the prison he
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: was supposedly born and raised in, which was in Albania
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: or somewhere, how does he have that accent after coming
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: out of the prison?
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: But in the movie, was he born there? I thought
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: he was. In the comics, he was.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: No, I read allegedly that Tom Hardy, that was like
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: some very obscure Eastern European dialect that he was doing.
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: And I YouTubeed that guy.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: And I could not see where he got, like, I
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: was listening to this gypsy fighter guy talker he apparently
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: got his inspiration for the voice and i'm i just
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: couldn't hear it i was like wow i i did
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: i still think sean connery's just like i think you're
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: lying you just watched i.
- 1:21:09Speaker 12: Don't know sometimes you just hear whatever is more.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Familiar maybe just the attitude like a lot of it
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: just inflections not necessarily accent.
- 1:21:15Speaker 13: Actor i knew was trying to do a dutch accent
- 1:21:18Speaker 13: in dracula and he said everybody just thinks you're doing
- 1:21:21Speaker 13: a bad german accent Because nobody knows the Dutch accent.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: I just thought Bane was trying to be Ed Sullivan.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: Or Christopher Walken. Batman. Now I will break you. I
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: can't do it. That's another accent where you're saying just people.
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: The impression of Christopher Walken is not at all Christopher Walken.
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: He even does that impression now.
- 1:21:49Speaker 12: Yeah, he does himself. There's such a difference, like.
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: A huge disconnect between the actual source.
- 1:21:55Speaker 8: That's why they keep bringing him back on Saturday Night Live.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: I was going to say, there are several actors I
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: feel like they've gotten to the point to where they
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: are impersonations of themselves.
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: Did you see.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Jack Nicholson and Nick Cage.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: Both, I feel like.
- 1:22:05Speaker 13: Nicholas Cage show up as Nicholas Cage on SNL. That
- 1:22:10Speaker 13: was pretty funny. Because he was actually not as good
- 1:22:14Speaker 13: a bad Nicholas Cage as Adam Sandberg.
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:19Speaker 12: And they were just like dueling banjo.
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: Andy Sandberg, yeah.
- 1:22:22Speaker 12: Andy Sandberg.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: But yeah, Dark Knight Rises overall, I wasn't disappointed. I
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: was just underwhelmed.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: I liked it a lot. I really am debating whether
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: or not it's better than The Dark Knight. At first,
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: I was like, The Dark Knight. I was like, I
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: think it's a better movie, but I'm just thinking about it.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: This movie felt just more mature overall.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: But the problem is the fourth act, and it's going
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: to be a lot of spoilers.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: I feel like the whole problem with it.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: Is you get to the point to where Bane has
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: all the police trapped underground.
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: He's blown all the bridges.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: He's got a nuclear bomb that he's sitting on, and
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: he's broken Batman's back, and he's halfway across the world.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: And it's like, okay, he essentially, for all intents and purposes,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: he's won. And then I feel like the Nolans were like, well, shit,
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: we wrote ourselves into a corner.
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: So wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: How can we get this to work? The bomb, it's
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: ticking down. It's got five months, so Batman can heal
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: up in that time. And the fact that it's like, okay, well,
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: we've got to keep the policemen healthy. They've got to
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: be clean-shaven. They've got to basically stay underneath the ground.
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: They've got to have all their weapons. So that way
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: we have.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: To have somebody to defeat the prisoners when they come up.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: And it's just, there were.
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: Well, the reason... That Bane, and I had to think back.
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: I was like, oh, that's why he was doing that.
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: He was telling Bruce Wayne before he put him in
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: the prison that I'm going to give them false hope
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: for a period of months before I destroy them because
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: that is the only way I can fulfill Ra's al
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Ghul's destiny. So that's why I figured he waited that
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: whole time to have the bomb ticking down instead of
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: just blowing it up all at once because he wanted
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: them to feel like they had a hope of saving
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: themselves to give them that illusion. And that was kind
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: of the point of having the big city prison kind of.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: deal yeah but for me a lot of it was
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: just it was very much the same climax to that
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: the dark knight had to where it's like somebody out
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: there some average person has the control to kill all
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: these people and you've got the ticking clock factor and
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: it's turning everyone against one another so you can see
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: how the city goes into chaos and it's just i
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: was like you know basically you watch batman begins you
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: watch dark knight and they are so different in tone
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: as well as art direction and style. And so basically
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: when I watched dark night rises, I almost felt like
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: I was watching a sequel just to dark night, even
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: though they threw back a lot to Batman begins. It's like,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: basically they kept that same tone and everything. It's like, well,
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: we got darker with dark night, so we have to
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: keep that. And I was like, it doesn't work. There
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: were so many, I mean, there was stuff about it
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: that I liked, but the more I started thinking about it,
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: the more just, things started to kind of fall through
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: just little nitpicky things like you know when he thought
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: the way he finds out about um bane alfred comes
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: down and he's like well i looked up you know
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: it's like he's giving all this on bane and i
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: was like he just he always magically knows all the
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: intel on every supervillain the second they arrive on screen
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: like he's like.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: The joker you came in and he just like gives
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: him this dossier on the joker like how do you
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: know this and he's alfred And he did the same
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: with Bane. At that point, I was like, yeah, that's
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: just what you do, Alfred. I've come to expect that.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: But that's kind of the comic book-y. You have to
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: suspend your disbelief on how awesome a person Alfred is.
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: He's the real superhero.
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: It's kind of amazing how he's really smart. He's ex-military.
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: He knows Batman better than anyone. He can kind of
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: kick ass. He beat that one guy up in Batman Begins,
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:25:59Speaker 8: But he spends most of his days making tea.
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: He actually cried a lot in this one, so he
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: was kind of a wuss.
- 1:26:04Speaker 6: You know, his blubber at, well, their one point, I'm
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: not going to spoil that.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Alfred's a walrus. That felt cheap to me.
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: I was like, you're such a better actor than this,
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: what are you doing? Yeah, that was the point. Well, actually,
- 1:26:23Speaker 6: like you said, that whole act is kind of.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: It feels just rushed.
- 1:26:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: Are you talking about where they like kept the falling out?
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: Well, that I'm just like the fourth act for me,
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: like the climax, everything. I mean, just to where it's like,
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: we sat on this, everything took five months to get
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: to this point. And now it's like, all right, we've
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: got to organize the city and do all this in
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: 45 minutes before the bomb goes off.
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: And it's just really well. And there's one point where
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: the time, I think it comes from watching 24 that
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: the The time, you know, Gotham's a big city, and
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: he escapes from one of the bad guys, I'm not
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: going to say it, in the, I guess it's a
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: bank or something that they're in, or the courthouse or something.
- 1:27:11Speaker 6: And Batman is able to get to his vehicle on
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: top of a building and get to the scene where
- 1:27:19Speaker 6: he needs to be after tracking someone, and it's like
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: less than three minutes of the clock time on the bomb. Like, no.
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: Just stop. You can edit better than this. Make the
- 1:27:31Speaker 6: time longer. Do something.
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, the time passing solution was kind of... Christopher Nolan,
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: I think his movies have always kind of had a
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: weird montage problem and just getting a sense of how
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: things are, like time has passed. I didn't know until
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: after I saw it that Gotham had been under Bane's
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: rule for five whole months. I honestly thought it was
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: like several weeks or something. I thought it was just
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: getting close to winter, and that's why it was just
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: snowing all of a sudden. I was like, oh, they're
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: approaching winter.
- 1:27:58Speaker 8: I kind of like that middle part, though, where it gets...
- 1:28:01Speaker 8: I mean, I think that's the most interesting part of it,
- 1:28:03Speaker 8: because it's not... For that part, it's not a superhero movie.
- 1:28:07Speaker 8: It's almost this dystopian future. It's this weird alternate reality.
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: I like watching... I like knowing this really... I generally
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: thought reading this and having this in my head enhanced
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: watching the movie for me is... Christopher Nolan, how he
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: said his approach to making this movie was going back
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: to the silent era of the kind of Fritz Lang
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: epics and how he had, because they read it, they're
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: pretty blatantly at the end, Tale of Two Cities, and
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: having those two things in mind. And so kind of
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: going into that thing, like, this is not going to
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: be a Batman movie. This is going to be, like,
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: a movie about, you know, this revolution in a city
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: and this crazy epic scale, and it's not going to
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: be a comic book movie. And I think that made me, like,
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: appreciate it more. Like, think about it more if I
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: had gone in expecting, like, another Dark Knight or, like,
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: the new Batman movie. I think I would have been
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: even more disappointed.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: But see, if that was the case, they shouldn't have
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: started off with Batman then. I mean, I think if
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: you were going to do that, start off with Gotham
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: City under Bane's rule.
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: And then you kind of backtrack a bit.
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: That's the problem with the movie. It does, as a
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: follow-up to The Dark Knight, it does disappoint. As a
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: movie that stands on its own and does its own
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: weird thing, it definitely, I think it's... And see, I.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: Think that might be the thing. That's why I said
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: I wasn't disappointed. I was underwhelmed because the Nolans, they
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: set the bar so high with what they'd done. And
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: it's like, it just didn't quite... meet up, because a
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: lot of the action sequences in the fourth act, and
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: I was like, I feel like at almost that point,
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: it's digressing a little bit into just the superhero movie
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: that I've seen dozens of times over.
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: And over, whereas the other two didn't. Yeah, it's unfortunate
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: the Avengers came out the same year, because I thought
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: a lot, there was a lot of just, I mean,
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: not conscious, but similar things that happened in the climax.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: We've already spoiled stuff, so I'm just going to say, like,
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: the whole saving, like, stopping the missile from you know
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: and going off and this hero going off with whatever
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: explosive device and blowing up in the distance like is
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: he dead i feel like i've seen that it's like the.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: Old 1966 batman it's just some days you can't get rid.
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: Of a bomb the nunnery yeah that's what i assumed
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: that was it was a little tribute to batman i
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: like to think that yeah there's a tribute to that
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: um and also the flying around the city like missiles
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: flying around you know new york that's It was very
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: similar to the Avengers, but done a lot.
- 1:30:28Speaker 9: Better, I thought.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: I do like the fact that the overall point of
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: the story is to redeem Batman in the city's eyes,
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: from where he got dropped in Dark Nights. That I
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: like about it. Like I said, I don't think it's
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: a bad movie, it's just when you compare it to
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: the other two, I feel like it's the weakest of
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: the three for me.
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: It definitely had its flaws.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: I did like it a lot better than Inception, which
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: I don't think I've never really been in the Inception camp,
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: but everyone else is.
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: So I went in not expecting much.
- 1:31:03Speaker 8: Not everyone.
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Not everyone.
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: I think we better round this thing out. So this,
- 1:31:12Speaker 8: based on the comments earlier, should be interesting. Okay, kids,
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: get out your decoder pins. Nobody?
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: Nothing?
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: I don't even know what kind of noise that would warrant.
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.
- 1:31:28Speaker 8: Since we've done it a hundred times, you'd think by
- 1:31:30Speaker 8: now you'd have an idea.
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: It's some sort of fanfare, must have.
- 1:31:33Speaker 12: Oh, we were going to do like the Led Zeppelin thing.
- 1:31:36Speaker 8: And you've once again disappointed me. I think I give
- 1:31:39Speaker 8: up on all you people.
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:31:40Speaker 8: You're useless.
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: You've not had enough coffee.
- 1:31:43Speaker 12: I forgot.
- 1:31:45Speaker 6: I give up.
- 1:31:45Speaker 9: I could tell that tonight's message was really important.
- 1:31:48Speaker 8: So with that, next week... For our Secret Circle reveal here.
- 1:31:52Speaker 8: Next week's feature will be... Prepare yourselves. Star Crash. For me,
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: I've been waiting for this one for years now. So
- 1:32:03Speaker 8: it's time. We need to discuss it. So next week
- 1:32:07Speaker 8: we will be back with Star Crash. So I think
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: you need to go watch it and prepare yourself. Do
- 1:32:14Speaker 8: yourself a favor. Because it's... Well, it's.
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: Arguable, but.
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: Do yourself a favor? Yeah, yeah. I think everybody needs
- 1:32:22Speaker 8: to experience the wonder of Star Crash. But we'll leave
- 1:32:24Speaker 8: that for next week. Otherwise, that about does it. We
- 1:32:28Speaker 8: will return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed.
- 1:32:30Speaker 8: Thanks for listening.
- 1:32:31Speaker 12: There was a time.
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: When lonely men would wander.
- 1:32:40Speaker 8: Through this land.
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: Rolling aimlessly along.
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: So many times.
- 1:32:52Speaker 7: I've heard of their sad story.
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: Written in the words of dead men's songs Down through
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: the years Many men have yearned.
- 1:33:12Speaker 7: For freedom.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: Some found it only on the open road.
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: So many tears of blood have.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: Filled around us.
- 1:33:33Speaker 7: Cause you can't always do what you are told.
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: Please tell me where.
- 1:33:45Speaker 7: Have all the hope was gone too I see no
- 1:33:53Speaker 7: fire burning down by the rusty railroad track Could it
- 1:34:01Speaker 7: be that time has gone and left.
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: Them Tied up in life's eternal traveling sands Last Sunday
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: night I wrote a letter to.
- 1:34:31Speaker 12: My loved ones.
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: I signed my name.
- 1:34:38Speaker 15: And knew I had stayed away too long There was
- 1:34:44Speaker 15: a time when my heart was free to wander And
- 1:34:54Speaker 15: I remember.
- 1:34:56Speaker 8: As I sang this hobo song.
- 1:35:02Speaker 10: Please tell me where.
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: Have all the hobos gone to?
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: I see no fire.
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: Burning down by the rusty railroad track.
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: Could it be.
- 1:35:26Speaker 8: Tied up.
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: In life's eternal traveling sand.
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: Tied up in.
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: Life's eternal traveling sand.
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: Oh, I thought that was a Segway.
- 1:35:51Speaker 12: Speaking of Segways.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: Oh, the scooter.
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: It's almost a Segway.
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: It's a powered scooter.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: Is it a powered scooter?
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: It's good enough. Like, yeah.
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: You're really regretting choosing this location.
- 1:36:02Speaker 8: Do we have an option?
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: Speaking of Segways.
- 1:36:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: For the loser who can't afford.
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: A real sick way.
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: He rode it to the restaurant.
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: Right into the restaurant.
- 1:36:14Speaker 8: Did someone open it from his car three spaces away?
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Did he really ride it from his car to the restaurant?
- 1:36:19Speaker 6: He rode it from the tracks.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: I wish he just kept going right around people's tables.
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: He actually came down the railroad tracks on a scooter
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: and then just rode right into the restaurant.
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: This is my stop.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: The scooter's coming through this town any day now. Build
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: this bagel shop here.
- 1:36:40Speaker 12: I suppose people listening to us could lose patience at
- 1:36:45Speaker 12: some point.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: It's like, is there a restaurant? What's something about a base?
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: What is this? I don't understand this show.
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: Do they have a window?
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: I wish we had a shade is what I wish
- 1:36:54Speaker 8: we had.
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: People making faces.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: It looks like there maybe used to be a shade
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: at one point, was there?
- 1:36:59Speaker 8: Well, we need one.
