Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
• 0:03
culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
• 0:06
media, the creator economy and the digital space.
• 0:08
Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
• 0:12
the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
• 0:16
All right, guys, I just got off such an exciting interview.
• 0:20
I interviewed one of the editors at Know Your Meme named Aiden
• 0:23
Walker. He's going to be on the podcast
• 0:25
on Friday for the deep dive because he is currently doing a
• 0:28
series on TikTok diving in to Skibbity Toilet.
• 0:32
And we talked all things Jen Alpha, Internet culture, meme
• 0:37
culture, and of course, Skibbity toilet.
• 0:39
I needed to hear from an expert, an academic in the field who is
• 0:45
studying Skibbity toilet. I needed to hear what it's all
• 0:48
about, why Jen Alpha is obsessed with it, why I became the
• 0:51
biggest meme on the Internet last year.
• 0:53
So I'm really excited for you guys to hear that.
• 0:55
It was a really good chat. He is just so knowledgeable.
• 0:58
Anyways, it was a great chat. So let's dive right into the
• 1:01
stories today 'cause we have quite a few.
• 1:04
So the first story is that the Hawk Tua girl was pulled on
• 1:08
stage with Zach Bryan. So if you've been on the
• 1:12
Internet over the past couple of days, chances are you've heard
• 1:15
of the Hawk Tua girl, whose real name is Hayley Welsh.
• 1:19
So she started going viral last week after she was interviewed
• 1:22
in a Vox Pop style video by Tim and DTV.
• 1:26
In the clip she was asked what's 1 move in bed that makes a man
• 1:29
go crazy every time, to which she responded you got to.
• 1:33
Give him that hawk to spend all that time.
• 1:37
As you might expect, the Hawk Tua girl is most popular among
• 1:41
straight men, with Alex Abbott Santos for Vox reporting that
• 1:46
this demographic quote tends to be the fans of both funny noises
• 1:49
and oral sex. Conventionally attractive women
• 1:52
saying raunchy things have long been a pop culture fascination.
• 1:56
Soon rumors started spiraling that she had lost her job as a
• 2:00
preschool teacher, which since turned out to be false.
• 2:03
I have heard that nonstop all week.
• 2:05
Like Oh my God, did you hear she lost her job?
• 2:07
That was first reported by like an Onion style, like a satirical
• 2:12
publication and I think people didn't know that there is
• 2:15
  satirical publication. Anyways.
• 2:17
Another rumor even stated that she was going to be signed with
• 2:20
United Talent Agency, but TMZ has since reported that this is
• 2:24
not the case. Haley is carving out her own
• 2:26
space in pop culture. Over the weekend, country singer
• 2:29
of Zach Bryan invited the Hawk Tour Girl on stage at his
• 2:32
Nashville show during Revival, being the final song of the
• 2:36
night. After singing the song with
• 2:38
Zach, Haley gave the crowd a spirited Hawk Tour before
• 2:42
leaving the stage with the audience cheering.
• 2:45
I mean, overall, the Hawk Tour girl, she just demonstrates the
• 2:48
potential of vox pop style interviews to go viral.
• 2:52
And you know how this is one of the latest ways for an average
• 2:55
person to achieve online fame. Who knows if this can be
• 2:59
leveraged into a long term online presence.
• 3:02
We haven't really seen that be the case with most of these,
• 3:05
like quick viral moments. But she seems to be milking it
• 3:09
in a good way. Like she seems to be like taking
• 3:10
advantage of the opportunities coming her way.
• 3:13
So we'll see. She's kind of like the latest.
• 3:15
I'm trying to think of like what another example is.
• 3:17
I mean, she's kind of like the latest.
• 3:19
Like, I'm looking for a man in finance type of meme girl.
• 3:23
You know, these come around every once in a while.
• 3:25
So let's see if she can parlay this into followers and maybe
• 3:29
  some type of career opportunities.
• 3:31
OK, the next story that I have for you guys.
• 3:34
Internet users are reacting to James Charles ranting about the
• 3:39
US presidential debate. So James Charles is going viral
• 3:43
for a recent rant he posted on TikTok after watching the US
• 3:46
presidential debate last week. The clip, which was posted to
• 3:49
his spam TikTok account at James Charles Lowell.
• 3:52
James reacts to the debate and is very clearly outraged.
• 3:56
He starts the video by saying I. Need an Adderall prescription
• 3:59
and it's not for me, it's for fucking Joe Biden.
• 4:01
OK. That presidential debate was the
• 4:03
most embarrassing fucking pathetic excuse for a television
• 4:06
program I have ever seen in my life.
• 4:08
How are these two 1000 year old fucking corpses are all the two
• 4:13
options for president? He goes on to express concern
• 4:17
about Biden's competence, noting that he seemed to struggle to
• 4:20
articulate his points. James also called out Donald
• 4:24
Trump for lying through the entire debate.
• 4:26
So many of James points were valid and a lot of viewers have
• 4:29
expressed this in the comments section.
• 4:32
However, he has started to receive some backlash,
• 4:35
particularly after questioning some of Biden's remarks in the
• 4:38
debate around Roe V Wade. James questioned why Biden is
• 4:42
promising to follow through with certain actions if he is re
• 4:46
elected, pointing out that he is currently the president and
• 4:48
should take these actions now. Literally during that debate
• 4:51
somebody from his fucking team tweeted out saying if I get re
• 4:54
elected I will reinstate Roe versus Wade.
• 4:57
Newsflash grandpa, you're the fucking president now and it's
• 5:02
it's gone because of you. Oh my God.
• 5:03
What do you mean if you get re elected you'll bring it back Do.
• 5:07
It now so on Twitter, many users have started reposting this part
• 5:11
of the video, characterizing James's take on the situation as
• 5:14
incorrect and harmful. They are concerned that someone
• 5:17
with this level of influence is spreading such opinions,
• 5:20
especially since he has such a young audience, a demographic
• 5:23
that needs to turn out for the Democratic Party in the
• 5:26
election. These users have noted that
• 5:28
overturning Roe V. Wade was largely due to Trump's
• 5:31
presidency and his ability to appoint 3 conservative justices
• 5:35
to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Biden and the
• 5:38
Democratic Party have attempted to safeguard women's rights to
• 5:41
abortion and healthcare through legislative efforts, but have
• 5:44
struggled due to the Republican controlled House of
• 5:47
Representatives. Quote, why do you have all this
• 5:50
smoke for Joe but no smoke for the one person who appointed 3
• 5:53
Supreme Court justices that rolled back Roe V Wade?
• 5:56
One Twitter user named at to raw to reel posted on X.
• 6:00
So with all that being said, the main thing that people have
• 6:03
taken away from this is like questioning if James understands
• 6:07
how the US government works. And I'm going to say he probably
• 6:14
does. I think that this video, like I
• 6:17
understand what people are saying, it's like he has such a
• 6:20
big platform and just to say that so loosely to be like, you
• 6:26
can control this, you can fix this to Joe Biden like as and
• 6:29
you can fix this right now. I understand it's like fake news
• 6:32
essentially. But I mean, this video was
• 6:35
clearly him like freaking out. He was like so impassioned in
• 6:39
this video, you know, not to absolutely defend him, but I
• 6:42
feel like I don't think we should be taking what James said
• 6:45
in this video as like fact or anything like that.
• 6:49
I think it's very clearly a very emotional video for him that he
• 6:52
just recorded, like off the cuff panic.
• 6:56
But I also understand he has a huge audience.
• 6:59
He's a huge influencer. So it's just an example of like
• 7:02
you, you need to be careful what you say, what you put out there.
• 7:05
But I think at the end of the day, doesn't necessarily
• 7:06
indicate if James does or does not understand how the US
• 7:10
government works. I think it's more just him
• 7:14
having like a mental breakdown after watching that debate,
• 7:17
  which is relatable. OK.
• 7:20
And the last story that I have for you guys today is that Kabi
• 7:23
Lame is to start in a new unscripted series called Kabi is
• 7:27
Coming to America. So Kabi Lame, Tik Tok's most
• 7:30
followed creator, is starring in a limited three-part series
• 7:34
following Kabi across the United States Quote in his quest to
• 7:38
find a new home, diving into food, culture and adventures
• 7:41
with iconic celebrity guests. For context, Kabi was born in
• 7:45
Senegal but later moved to Italy with his family when he was a
• 7:48
baby. On TikTok, he currently has more
• 7:50
than 162,000,000 followers. He joined the platform in March
• 7:54
2020 after losing his factory job in Italy at the height of
• 7:57
the pandemic. Kabi first dabbled in trending
• 8:00
dances and skits, which was of course, the default content for
• 8:04
most creators when initially creating videos.
• 8:06
And since then, he has become known for his comedy sketches
• 8:09
and reaction videos, which are typically without words.
• 8:13
According to Todd Spangler for Variety, Cobby visits Miami, New
• 8:17
Orleans and New York in each episode and quote meets with
• 8:20
celebrity guests David Beckham, Alicia Keys, Jon Batiste and
• 8:24
Stephen A Smith, as well as local influencers.
• 8:27
That is wild. Cobby meeting with Alicia Keys,
• 8:32
David Beckham, I'm obsessed. In the same interview, Cobby
• 8:35
revealed that the show is his quote training for my movie,
• 8:38
suggesting that he is ready to pivot away from TikTok quote.
• 8:41
I'm practicing acting more. I don't want to stay in social
• 8:44
media all my life, he tells Spangler.
• 8:46
My dream is to win an Oscar. Cute.
• 8:50
And the series did premiere last Friday on To be.
• 8:53
I feel like Kabi might be doing it right.
• 8:56
There is so much discussion right now about the Demilio's,
• 9:00
for example, who, you know, just got all those followers, did
• 9:05
everything so quickly and weren't careful, I suppose about
• 9:10
what they picked and choosed, picked and choosed, picked and
• 9:15
chose whatever, you know what I mean?
• 9:16
What they chose to go after. And their ventures feel very
• 9:23
like random, like they just said yes to whatever came their way.
• 9:27
And that's really diluted their brand and you know, their
• 9:31
engagement and all of that. Like it's all suffering now
• 9:34
because they weren't considered enough in terms of their
• 9:39
longevity in the industry and their personal brand.
• 9:41
And I understand that on one hand because like who knows
• 9:45
where TikTok could be? I mean, it could be banned, you
• 9:47
know, like you kind of got to strike while the iron is hot, as
• 9:50
they say. So I understand why they took
• 9:53
all those opportunities and those initiatives to begin with
• 9:56
and like make as much money as possible to capitalize on this
• 9:58
moment. Like, why would you not, right?
• 10:00
But I think it'll be interesting to see where Kabi goes because
• 10:03
he is the most followed creator. And, you know, it was him and
• 10:05
Charlie like neck and neck for who was going to become the
• 10:08
number one for a long time. And when he surpassed Charlie,
• 10:11
it was a big deal. And I think it's interesting
• 10:13
that he has just really stayed authentic to social media and
• 10:18
has taken what, four years to really venture into something
• 10:22
  different. So we'll see.
• 10:24
Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
• 10:27
Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
• 10:30
