- 5:19What's happening? What's going on?
- 5:23Player, you already know me. I'm happy.
- 5:27I woke up this morning, you know, I got a whistle.
- 5:30Listen. Listen, my brother, you know I
- 5:33got a whistle, you hear me? Hey, a whiff of a day Keep the
- 5:38doctor away. Two or three don't hurt.
- 5:44So Shan, so tell, tell us, tell us about when you got started in
- 5:51the hip hop game. Back early, it was like, you
- 5:57know, that was the new music for us.
- 5:59We didn't have that. We listened to our mother's
- 6:02music back then. And so when hip hop came along,
- 6:06everybody that was a teenager, just like the teenagers.
- 6:10Music today is not our music. Facts So you mute you took
- 6:18yourself off cuz. No, he's not even here.
- 6:23He. He walked inside.
- 6:24I think he hit the button. Oh damn, get him back.
- 6:27I can't get him back. He's got to get him back.
- 6:39He's going to laugh. Well, he'll be back.
- 6:42Guys, you got to understand. We owe Geez, we don't understand
- 6:44this new technology. Listen, I'm personally today,
- 6:47I'm just here for the ride. But MC Shane.
- 6:50This is This is this is more for him.
- 6:52I'm I'm here for the ride today. Look, that was because I didn't
- 6:56like my lighting and it's too much background noise outside,
- 6:59so I came so. Let's get back to Let's get back
- 7:03to when you started with D Nice and all of cats.
- 7:07Well, we just used to do this for fun.
- 7:10It wasn't even about about when we learnt that we could make
- 7:13money. That was a total different ball
- 7:17game. So we were having fun, making
- 7:21money, doing what we loved. But when hip hop came around and
- 7:25just became our music and I just happened to step in out of time,
- 7:29that was right for me. Roxanne Shantae put me on,
- 7:33right? And so she took, when she was
- 7:36the biggest thing around the world, she was taking me on too.
- 7:40So I was being exposed to the world before I even had a record
- 7:44up, right? I remember that.
- 7:46I remember that. I remember I remember Roxanne
- 7:49Chante came up to wheels and Yonkers and I was you know, I
- 7:53was like you. I'm an OG.
- 7:55So I was one of them cast that just hung out there, you know,
- 7:58and I was I was hanging out with the owner of the place.
- 8:01He goes yo come hang out with us.
- 8:03I said man, I'm not. He goes come and hang out with
- 8:05us. We hanging out with Roxanne
- 8:07Chante, bro, we sitting there, it's like, it's like even when I
- 8:12was hanging out with Heavy D and them cats, you know?
- 8:15It's a good time. It wasn't.
- 8:16It wasn't about being stuck up star, we were just having fun.
- 8:22You know, she even put on some roller skates.
- 8:29So, so, So tell me how you came up with your biggest hit, which
- 8:35is to me. And I had to play it for him.
- 8:38This is my son, the bridge. What's up nephew?
- 8:41You good all along? How are you?
- 8:44I woke up today, nephew, and you should be glad that's that's
- 8:48what I. Said Every day I wake up, I'm
- 8:50good. I can't beat on the.
- 8:51Ground woke up and he got a snizzle.
- 8:53There you go. Look check this out.
- 8:55It's better be seen than viewed. So how'd you come up with the
- 9:01bridges over? I didn't come up with the
- 9:05bridges over Christie. I came up with the bridge, right
- 9:10the bridge and I was like everybody, every No, don't worry
- 9:14about that. The the the bridge wasn't the
- 9:17first song that represented just the hood before me.
- 9:22Everybody was talking about I'm from Brooklyn, from Bronx, I'm
- 9:25from Queens, I'm from this. Then I came in.
- 9:28It's like, yo, I'm from Queens Bridge and that was a tape for
- 9:33two years in Queens Bridge because we didn't think nobody
- 9:36else around the world wanted to hear about our projects.
- 9:40So that tape circulated in Queens Bridge for two years.
- 9:44And for all of you list all of the people that's on your joint,
- 9:47they probably going to talk about Chief.
- 9:49But I have some because, you know, that's my favorite joke,
- 9:55you know what I'm saying? So I'll be I'll be happy to pull
- 9:58them out and clack them for you if you like.
- 10:01You know, you know, you know. What I'm saying?
- 10:03Every time on Instagram I see somebody say you got all this
- 10:06money once you get teeth. I'm like, yo, once you once you
- 10:09mind your business. The motherfucker's older than
- 10:11you. But I got teeth though.
- 10:14That's the. Freaking problem.
- 10:16You don't wear the player look. I don't understand.
- 10:19Play. This is what we do.
- 10:20We do what we want to do, not what they want us to do, you
- 10:22heard. Right and see now look, never
- 10:26say yes when you really want to say no.
- 10:28We we reached that stage of our life.
- 10:31I don't have to do anything. You can talk about how broke I
- 10:35am and what not. Just my kids toys will make you
- 10:39think, Oh, let me shut up. You know what I'm saying?
- 10:42They'd like to talk that. And sometimes I got demons, Yo,
- 10:46I'm never going to be 100% pure. Why?
- 10:51Because I need 2% demon to deal with these people out here.
- 10:54My demons are called stupid, an idiot, because you know, we have
- 11:00to leave something. Because if you're too, if you're
- 11:04100%, ha ha ha, you'll let somebody slap me in the face and
- 11:08you'll forgive them. You'll let them take your money,
- 11:10more money. You know what I'm saying?
- 11:17Somebody slapped me in the face. They better call it Doctor.
- 11:19So So when Roxanne Chante asked you to go on tour with her, what
- 11:23was your like? How did you?
- 11:25Like how the hell yeah, Hell yeah.
- 11:29What do you mean? I was working a job, right?
- 11:33Making $120.00 a week working with my grandfather.
- 11:37I went out on wait one weekend. I saw I was on stage for what?
- 11:43How long is Molly scratched 5 minutes.
- 11:46I made $400.00 for singing one song.
- 11:49All that job stuff was over. You could tell I don't got no
- 11:53calluses. The only work that I do is the
- 11:55work that I want to do. OK, so that right there was like
- 12:00an awakening. Like what?
- 12:01I can go train this and get this much.
- 12:05Yeah, it's like I just spent 5 minutes out in front of these
- 12:08people and make quadruple what I just made to work really hard.
- 12:12Am I going to go there or am I going to do this?
- 12:15I think this sounds better. Who is your?
- 12:17Blessed I'll fight myself the next Monday so I.
- 12:23Said I'm. Fired myself next.
- 12:27Monday I like that and look and check this out.
- 12:30The foreman who used to be on my back and kind of dislike me
- 12:35right? He used to drive a maximum when
- 12:37Maximus first came out. You remember the square Maximus?
- 12:41You know I'm saying he used to drive one of those right?
- 12:45Like a month and 1/2 after I quit myself flying myself, I
- 12:49came back driving a fucking Audi.
- 12:53He couldn't believe it. So now he looking at me like
- 12:57hell. How?
- 13:00Yeah. First thing you said is you
- 13:03dealing drugs. Yeah, well, that's OK.
- 13:06The next thing he knew that I was on a famous guy on TV and
- 13:10all. Kind of with records and all of
- 13:12that. And so all of that he's selling
- 13:14drugs went right out the window. Everybody in the factory where I
- 13:20worked at knew what I was doing and knew, well, you know what
- 13:23I'm saying? So was no way that he was
- 13:25oblivious to the fact that I wasn't a drug dealer.
- 13:30So tell me when you signed your first record deal, who is that
- 13:36with and how did how does that how does that work to sign a
- 13:39record deal like they front you money or do?
- 13:43You. That depends on situation.
- 13:45Nowadays they don't furnish you no money, but back then they
- 13:48would let you run up a check and then tell you you unrecouped.
- 13:53You know what I'm saying? That lets you run up a check,
- 13:55right? You owe them money back at let's
- 13:59say $0.25 a record, right? They didn't made 18,000,000 off
- 14:07of your albums because you're paying $250,000 back, $0.50 at a
- 14:13time because that's all you could get per record, right?
- 14:16So you never recoup. But they made millions and
- 14:19millions and millions of dollars before you ever steal dime.
- 14:25Wow. Wow, that's a lot of.
- 14:29Artists have said over the years they used to, you know, 300,000
- 14:34up front for a music video and then you got to make, like you
- 14:37said, you got to pay that money back at the end of it.
- 14:40Right. And back when we used to start
- 14:43this, yo, we were new. Oh, we can have limousines we
- 14:46could get, we could go to the fanciest restaurants and put it
- 14:49on they tab. What?
- 14:52So a lot of us live beyond that means and didn't know what it
- 14:55meant that they're gonna write that money off that they lost
- 14:59with us, but they're gonna make 18,000,000.
- 15:02You get what I'm saying? So regardless of the fact we
- 15:05aren't losing end of the stick in this business period, period.
- 15:13So, so Shane, who was when you went on tour, who was one of the
- 15:19best ones you went on tour with? Everybody.
- 15:23Everybody in my era had their own thing.
- 15:28We weren't copycats. Like these days, you could take
- 15:3212 artists, mix their records back-to-back and never know that
- 15:36the fucking record changed and the artists change because they
- 15:39all sound the same. But the era that I come from,
- 15:44everybody was an individual. You couldn't even people that
- 15:48were in the group, you couldn't even compare them to the person
- 15:52that was in the group with you. UTFO, each one of them had their
- 15:56own characteristics. Although it was a conglomerate
- 16:00of a group run DMC, you couldn't put you.
- 16:03Everybody was individual. And you know, The funny thing is
- 16:08back when you and I was growing up and coming up together, you
- 16:12know, we had dancers, we had this.
- 16:15These new hip hop people ain't got dancers like Heavy D like E
- 16:18like. You know they don't.
- 16:19Nobody. Else you know.
- 16:20What I mean and, and to kind of touch on on what he said, what
- 16:24you're saying, you know, they do all sound the same now.
- 16:26And I say that, you know, I, I say that listening to hip hop
- 16:30music and and rap and, and all the different, they all do sound
- 16:34the same. A lot of the new people sound
- 16:36the same. You know, when you find somebody
- 16:38with a distinct voice or a distinct sound that you can,
- 16:41like you said, you can pick out of the groups, then you know,
- 16:44you have something when they go alone.
- 16:48But right, like the the only person that in recent years that
- 16:52I could say, you know, had that kind of distinction was when it
- 16:58was was pop smoke out of out of New York, out of, I think out of
- 17:03Brooklyn pop no pop smoke, I think was Brooklyn or Queens one
- 17:07of them. No, Brooklyn, I think it.
- 17:09Was but he's. He had that distinct, like you
- 17:12said, that distinct sound that, that you could, you could tell,
- 17:16you know, his songs were different from, from this guy,
- 17:19from that guy, from this guy, because he, he didn't try to be
- 17:23like anybody else, you know, he tried to go in his own, his own
- 17:26lane, so to say. All right, now, Pop, check this
- 17:31out on my pop something back in the days, my distinct feature of
- 17:37when you MC sham, what made you know that it was me?
- 17:44Shit, man, man. I'm just.
- 17:47I'm listening. Hold on.
- 17:48Wait. I'm gonna give him a hand.
- 17:49I'm gonna give him a hand real quick.
- 17:51You'll have to hear the story again and again.
- 17:53Yes, yes. The voice.
- 17:57Yes, yes. The voice.
- 17:59And and and and you had on the red tango.
- 18:04That's all right. L had a red tango.
- 18:07You was the first one to put that shit I.
- 18:09Was not listen, everybody thinks that I was first.
- 18:12I wasn't. I used to before I got into hip
- 18:15hop and I mean, I used to listen.
- 18:17I was into it, but I was on the.
